Not sure why they are against it... but they are. Jake

well ... for one thing it's rather disgusting that a football team stands the possibility of getting taxpayer money to fund their stadium, at the expense of eminant domain abuse, neighbourhood destruction, gov't-sponsored class warfare. at the risk of sounding like a completley biased twat, i believe that their opposition is largely due to the possible divertion of tourist dollars from a world-reknowned theatre district -- one that certainly adds more truly unique cultural value to this city than some portable, cookie-cutter football team. that stadium can go largely anywhere. the theatres can't.

There is the possibility that Broadway will also gain from the millions more in visitors because of the conventions and stadium. There is always tax payer dollars going into new stadiums, they need to have backing from the state and city they are moving into. What is unique about this situation is that the Jets owners is putting in almost DOUBLE what any other owner has ever used of his money. Jake

well then perhaps in addition to the city and the state offering financial backing, they should also seek permission from the residents that actually live and own businesses in the effected neighbourhood rather than simply dismissing their concerns, ceasing lands through eminant domain abuse and using taxpayer money to fund private ventures. if they can't put up the money to build a stadium on their own, then i guess that's their problem now, isn't it? life's tough. gotta have money to build a stadium, eh? not enough money? well then i guess they'll have to scrap the plan. the arrogance, ego, ethnocentricism and nerve of athletic institutions never ceases to amaze me. let us take this into account as we foolishly try to associate local pride with the success of a sports team, and use it as justification for public financing of private ventures. i live at 28th and 10th. this is in MY neighbourhood. please spare the argumentation over quantitative figures. i don't want to hear it, and neither does anybody in the neighbourhood, or perhaps anybody that could directly benefit out of better-spent taxpayer money. (for that matter, nor do most people in the west side or in nyc according to recent polls.) if bloomberg wants a stadium so bad, then perhaps he wouldn't mind it being built in the upper east side. besides, it's just a brwnstone wasteland up there, and all those rich people shouldn't have any problem finding a new place to live, anyway.

I am sure your concerns are very valid, but I think the positives to New York City including jobs, income, revenue, expos outweigh the negatives. Jake

there are no businesses or residents on the stadium site -- only rail yards just because you live in an area does not give you the right to oppose something just because... ...it happens to be in your back yard ...there is nothing in it for you ...you are going to lose your rent-controlled apartment In this case, the good of the many must overide the good of the few. If you have a valid reason for opposing the project, we would like to hear. Oh, by the way, you cannot have a valid reason unless you have taken the time to read the Environmental Impact Statement (see url below). This project is too important to the city to let people like you stop it. The King of Queens
