This . . . that . . . and more Sunday, June 20, 2004 BOB SNYDER STAFF WRITER While on the road - in search of all that money blown by the Lakers on future Hall of Famers humiliated by the fourth or fifth most-talented team in the NBA - these thoughts: I can't understand all the fuss over Larry Bird saying the best players in the NBA are black (gosh, that's a real revelation) and the league needs more white stars, because of its fan base. C'mon, check courtside or the luxury boxes. From Our Advertiser Nothing Bird had to say fazed Magic Johnson, LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony during a TV go-round with Jim Gray. It's all true, and none of it is racially intolerant. But when your comments even come within 3-point distance of being along racial lines, you run the risk of becoming the next Al Campanis or Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder. The unemployment line is just waiting for the next person to put a racially insensitive foot in his/her mouth. PS: If Bird's words were those of Charles Barkley, we would have chuckled and moved on. Don't criticize those Golden Domers. Even Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung, longtime Notre Dame radio network football analyst, couldn't survive his own remarks, seen by some as racially insensitive. The former All-American, who went on to an all-pro career in Green Bay, had said the Irish ought to relax academic standards to help elevate recruiting of black players. Hornung later "punted" - suggesting he meant to say it would aid in recruiting all athletes. Too little too late for powers-that-be in South Bend. Too bad. After all these years, seems silly for the Fightin' Irish and their Golden Boy to end such a long association. Why is it I'd rather watch the College World Series from Omaha than the NBA Finals? At the midway point of this year's PGA Tour (prior to the U.S. Open), 35 players had earned over $1 million. As recently as 1998, the millionaire list totaled 26 - at season's end. I can't help feeling bad over the Jim O'Brien dismissal at Ohio State. I always thought O'B was one of the class acts in collegiate coaching. If O'Brien can fall prey to paying off a foreign recruit early in his stint in Columbus, where he'd been hired to clean up an exisiting mess, makes you wonder how many of his coaching brethren have done the same thing. Or tried to. Best nickname in Omaha: Dirtbags. The Dirtbags reference by Long Beach State, officially called the 49ers, is to the school's 1989 CWS team that practiced on an all-dirt field. Who said it always takes too long to play 18? Tom Carter and Patrick Sheehan, admittedly off first and out of the hunt the final day of the Buick Classic, toured Westchester CC, with its demanding elevation changes, in a brisk three hours, 18 minutes last Sunday. Carter shot 75, while Sheehan (78) finished last among those making the cut. Anyone care who's on the Olympic men's hoop team? I've been opposed to our sending pros from the start. Sure, much of our amateurism is a charade. But if we stand for an amateur ideal, our Dream Team ought to be those dreaming of an Olympic medal . . . not a bunch of coddled millionaires who may, or may not, care. Just think, I was worried about a massive infrastructure debacle if a suggested stadium was to be built in the Armory Square district? How about a proposed future home for the Jets, Jets, Jets on New York's West Side, which could serve as a site for a Big Apple Bowl in 2010? Now that's just what we need - another bowl game and $300 million of state taxpayers' money going to fund a stadium in NYC. To e-mail: [email] © 2004 The Post-Standard. Used with permission.
