Queens, NY - Assemblymembers Michael Cohen, Nettie Mayersohn, Anthony Seminerio and City Councilmembers Tony Avella and Joe Addabbo Jr. are the most recent additions to a growing list of elected officials and prominent New Yorkers from Queens and across New York State who support the construction of the New York Sports and Convention Center.
"We must support projects which have the potential to strengthen our economy and create jobs for our communities," said Cohen. "We cannot and should not allow our city to remain stagnant. The NYSCC is an example of meaningful development which will have a long lasting positive impact on our great city."
"18,000 construction jobs and 7,000 permanent jobs means opportunities for the hard working men and women from our communities," added Mayersohn. "With high unemployment rates in Queens and throughout New York City, we must embrace projects which will create new job opportunities for our men and women."
"Currently I believe that years from now we will look back upon this opportunity with regret if we don't make this project a reality," said Addabbo Jr. "This is the type of project which will forever change our city - finally giving us a competitive edge."
These legislators join a bi-partisan coalition of more than 60 public officials from every borough fighting to realize a project that will create thousands of jobs and millions in new tax revenue. In particular, public officials from Queens who have previously voiced their support for the project include: Congressman Gregory Meeks, Borough President Helen Marshall, Former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., Assemblyman Michael Gianaris, Assemblyman Brian McLaughlin, Assemblyman Jose Peralta, Assemblyman Michele Titus; State Senator Serphin Maltese, State Senator Malcolm Smith; State Senator Ada Smith, Councilman Leroy Comrie, Councilman David Weprin, and Councilman Hiram Monserrate.
In addition, an increasing number of business and civic groups are also voicing their support for the NYSCC. Recently, the NYSCC earned the endorsement of the Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry .Other representatives of leading New York City organizations that now support the project include Ken Adams, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce; Kathy Wylde, President of the New York City Partnership; Maria Castro, President of the Manhattan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Steven Spinola, President of The Real Estate Board of New York; Bill Rudin, Chairman of the Association for a Better New York; Cristyne Nicholas, President of NYC and Company; and Joseph Spinatto, President of the Hotel Association of New York.
Numerous unions representing hundreds of thousands of hard-working New Yorkers are devoting time and energy to make the NYSCC a reality, because it will create thousands of jobs for their members.
And the NYSCC continues to earn more endorsements from newspapers across New York City. The project was recently endorsed by El Diario La Prensa, and the Queens Courier, which have joined a growing chorus of supportive publications including the Daily News, the New York Post, Crain's, the Amsterdam News, and the West Side Spirit.
The NYSCC and the development of the far West Side will create thousands of temporary and permanent jobs for hard working New Yorkers; generate millions of dollars in new annual revenue to help pay for more teachers, cops and firefighters; create new public spaces and waterfront access; help build a broader base of minority and women-owned business in New York City serving as a model for future MWBE programs in New York and across the nation and provide New York with a world class venue for events such as the Super Bowl, the Final Four and the 2012 Olympic Games.
