Bloomberg pulling for Giant coup
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/288862p-247253c.html Bloomberg pulling for Giant coup BY MICHAEL SAUL DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU The possiblity of the Giants joining the Jets in a move from the Jersey swamps to a proposed West Side stadium is for real, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday. "We've obviously talked to the Giants," said Bloomberg, a day after Giants executives announced negotiations with New Jersey to build a new stadium in the Meadowlands have stalled. "There are some reasons why it might work, might not work," said Bloomberg, referring to the Giants' possible move to Manhattan. "New Jersey obviously wants to keep all the sports franchises, and we would like to bring ...all the sports franchises back to the city." The Giants' interest in the proposed $1.7 billion West Side stadium, which also is the centerpiece of the city's 2012 Olympic bid, "sort of validates how great this facility would be," Bloomberg said. While even the Jets deal is far from a sure thing, the possibility of both teams playing home games in Manhattan had the mayor seeing big numbers. "It would double the amount of economic activity for games," Bloomberg said. Pat Hanlon, a spokesman for the Giants, said the team had not resumed talks with New Jersey, but also said Giants executives have not had "substantive" discussions about moving to Manhattan. Still, he said, "We have to explore all of our options." The Giants thought they were close to a deal to build their own new $750 million stadium in the Meadowlands. But New Jersey officials balked at the team's demands that luxury boxes be exempt from new taxes and that an entertainment complex be closed on game days. With talks stalemated, the Giants signaled they may try to enforce up to $300 million in upgrades of Giants Stadium through a clause in their lease that ensures they play in a "state-of-the-art" facility. That prompted the state to take the team to court yesterday, seeking an interpretation of the clause.
