Thursday Decision Now In Doubt Mar 29, 2005 11:41 am US/Eastern NEW YORK (CBS) Today, the public is getting a closer look at the bids submitted for the west side rail yards. With decision time fast approaching, the MTA has released documents detailing the offers from the three groups. But there may be some last minute developments. The MTA is scheduled to pick a developer for the west side rail yards on Thursday. But sources at the agency tell CBS 2 the board may decide to delay its decision by ten days to a month to silence critics who have said the process is too rushed. After all, the MTA only made the bids public last night. There are just two days before the MTA is scheduled to vote but with critics saying there hasn’t been enough time to analyze the bids the MTA, sources say, is thinking of going into overtime before it picks a winner. The plans do confirm that Cablevision, owner of Madison Square Garden, has submitted an aggressive counter proposal to the Jets stadium plan that is favored by Mayor Bloomberg. The plan shows Cablevision offered $760 million dollars to build a residential development but the MTA would only net $400 million dollars of that because of the expense of building a platform at the site. The Jets have offered $720 million dollars but with a discount for paying up front, the MTA gets $226 million. The remaining $440 million coming from a group of developers who first want zoning changes enacted by the city. Cablevision’s plan doesn’t project paying lots of its money to the MTA until January of next year, leading critics to charge that they’ll back away if the stadium deal collapses. The Jets say they’ll close on the deal this May. Cablevision plans to keep building until 2018. They Jets say they’ll be finished by 2009. “They have not put forward a real proposal for the far west side of Manhattan. They have not brought a development partner to the table. It is not clear how this will ever be financed,” says Jim Whelan, a Jets ally. Meanwhile on Tuesday, the Jets put forward another politician to endorse the stadium. I proudly stand here to support the NYC 2012 Olympic Bid, if we don't build it then the Olympics will not come to Manhattan. ((so congressman Joseph Crowley d-queens) Council Speaker Gifford Miller will be joined by other council members Tuesday afternoon at a news conference calling on the MTA to postpone a final decision until the land is rezoned for an open bidding process. It is an 11th hour moves like this that has MTA board members wondering whether a short delay might be better for everyone. Additionally, there is an interesting development out of Paris. The International Olympic Committee has eliminated Moscow and Madrid from the running for the 2012 Olympics. That leaves Paris, London and New York.
