Empire State Development Corporation Vote Keeps Olympic Stadium Momentum Growing
New York, NY (April 12, 2005) –The Olympic Stadium passed the second to last step in the public approval process needed to be completed before all parts of the far West Side rezoning and development projects are approved. Coming shortly after the critical unanimous vote by the MTA awarding the Jets the West Side railyards, the Empire State Development Corporation kept the momentum going by voting unanimously in favor of the New York Sports and Convention Center (NYSCC), which will serve as the Olympic Stadium for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Today’s Empire State Development Corporation’s (ESDC) vote for the New York Sports and Convention Center moves New York’s Olympic Stadium one step away from ensuring its full approval before the IOC votes on the Host City for the 2012 Games," said Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding and NYC2012 Founder Daniel L. Doctoroff. "The Olympic Movement has motivated vital developments in many host cities and New York is embracing this opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations. The entire Hudson Yards Redevelopment Plan, including the NYSCC, will transform a community that has been neglected for years and leave a bold legacy for generations of New Yorkers to come. The development of the Far West Side and the building of the NYSCC is vital to New York’s success as a host for the Games and the city’s economy overall.”
The New York Sports and Convention Center would serve as the Olympic Stadium for the 2012 Games and would host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and Track & Field competitions. Because it is a multi-use facility with a tremendous after-Games use as a convention center and stadium, the NYSCC would create thousands of jobs and generate hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue for the City and State.
The Games in New York will generate $11 billion in economic impact and 120,000 jobs in addition to a tremendous urban legacy of revitalizing the waterfront, 800 acres of new and enhanced parkland, 4,600 units of housing, and new and improved sports and recreational facilities across the five boroughs.
New York is competing against four other cities for the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012: London, Madrid, Moscow and Paris. The International Olympic Committee will name the Host City for the 2012 Games on July 6, 2005.
