QUEENS STADIUM IS NOT A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE

http://www.hudsonyardscoalition.com/downloads/Update-03.03.05.pdf GOVERNOR PATAKI, MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND THE NEW YORK JETS AGREE: QUEENS STADIUM IS NOT A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE NEW YORK SPORTS AND CONVENTION CENTER Today Governor Pataki, Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Jets reaffirmed the future location of the New York Sports and Convention Center – over the Western Rail Yards on Manhattan’s Far West Side. Some have claimed that a stadium in Queens could serve the same purpose, but it is clear that the New York Sports and Convention Center on Manhattan’s Far West Side would: • best serve the City’s tourism industry; • provide a strong financial return for the City and State; • attract more than $1 billion in private investment, and • enable New York City to win the nation’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Governor Pataki said “I have always believed that the stadium (on the west side of Manhattan) is a tremendous adjunct to the Javits Center…I continue to believe that that is the right spot. I think its critical that we do have an Olympic stadium and I think the right spot for it is where its not just going to be used 8 or 9 or 10 weekends a year. The balance of the time it will be available to turn the Javits Center into a true convention center that NYC needs.” Mayor Bloomberg said “…this city needs a place where lots of people can get together indoors and today we don’t have anything bigger than 30 or 40,000 seat arenas. This city needs the development on the West Side and I’m convinced that the stadium would be the thing that would give us the money to build the West Side up and that that would create an enormous number of jobs. ... the Olympic committee told us if we do not have the stadium we will not be considered. The Jets are going to invest $1 billion in this city and I don’t want to walk away from that either.” Jay Cross, president of the New York Jets, said “To be unequivocally clear: The New York Jets have no intention of building a stadium anywhere but over the railyards. We are prepared to make the largest private sports investment in history - more than $1 billion - to build this facility on Manhattan’s far west side, where such an unprecedented investment could be justified. Building a sports, entertainment and convention center apart from the Javits Center doesn't make sense for the Jets, for New York, for the City’s convention industry, and for consumers. But it does make sense for one company: Cablevision.” www.hudsonyardscoalition.com Jim Whelan, Executive Director 212-484-1280 HUDSON YARDS UPDATE News from the Hudson Yards Coalition March 3, 2005 http://www.hudsonyardscoalition.com/downloads/Update-03.03.05.pdf
