DN: Freddy kicks Mike on Jets plan

[quote]Freddy kicks Mike on Jets plan BY CELESTE KATZ DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Democratic mayoral hopeful Fernando Ferrer made a political football out of a proposed Queens stadium for the Jets yesterday, saying Mayor Bloomberg should have known all along the complex never belonged on Manhattan's West side. "I'm sure the Jets feel beholden to Mike Bloomberg for trying to unlock the door to the city treasury for them, but the simple fact is we all knew that Jets stadium belonged in Queens anyway," Ferrer said while campaigning at a farmers' market in Brooklyn. "And I still hold that we shouldn't be paying any city money to build a private stadium," the former Bronx borough president said. "The Jets should be building it themselves." Ferrer argued that the Bloomberg administration wanted to give away $1.2 billion in the failed West side deal. But Bloomberg adviser Bill Cunningham attacked Ferrer's math. "The former Bronx borough president inflates everything else," Cunningham said. "It shouldn't surprise us when he gets the facts wrong. The public commitment regarding the West side project was $600 million, not $1.2 billion." "But not a surprise, [because] Freddy has double positions on key issues like the death penalty, tax rebates, fingerprinting welfare recipients and abortion," Cunningham continued. "The real question is this: If he double-counts everything, how can he ever balance a $50 billion budget?" Jets officials told the NFL this week that they are considering building a nearly $1 billion stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, not far from Shea Stadium. "The proposal's in its initial stages, but the idea would be [for the Jets to] pay for the entire cost of the stadium, almost $1 billion, and look to the city and state for about $350 million in infrastructure and park improvements," said Jets Vice President Matthew Higgins. "At this critical juncture in determining the fate of the team, we hope the prospect of bringing the Jets back to Queens does not become fodder for the mayoral race."
