16 Jake: This is a Jet Kingdom Podcast, episode number 25 for Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008. Draft Day Well, welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast Draft Edition. As always, on this side of the digital aisle, I am Jake. And as always, on the other side I have... Justin: On the other side of that digital aisle, this is, as always, Justin. Justin, how you doing? Jake: I'm doing alright. How are you? Justin: I'm very good. You got your draft on? I'm ready. It's like... Jake: NFL time again. It does it does it feels like the NFL has almost started although we are very long from the actual game started. I want to put it out there first. This is our pre-draft Podcast where we are going to talk about the NFL Draft this year But I want to put it out for myself and I'll let you make your own disclaimers that I do not follow college football. I consider it a waste of my time. I didn't go to a school that had a college team. So for me, it's very difficult to get into college. Plus, the Sundays are so much of my life, it's hard for me to flip around and do a Saturday thing as well. and basically as I said to you before, for me I can't fall in college because I don't know who's going to go to the Jets. If you could, you picked out a player in college that said that player will play for the Jets, I would definitely watch those games because it was 100%. I would. Justin: If you knew Revas was going to be on the Jets, you would have watched Pittsburgh. You're absolutely right. You damn better would. And you know what, maybe that would Jake: help out the Jets. the college football if they actually did the draft the year before the team went because then I would watch that team. So that's my position. Justin: Not really what college football is all about Jake. It's not really about where they're going to go next. It's about kind of what they're doing at that point. Jake: Honestly, I don't care a lick of what they're doing at that point. I only want to know if they're going to play for my team or possibly play against my team. So that's my disclaimer. Full disclaimer. Justin: I'll. I'm not gonna say I am not also I'm also not a very big college football guy. I don't watch it regularly I'll watch some of the bowl games Like I'll have seen a couple of these guys Play before cuz they play for big schools that are always on TV and I might be slipping around right but you know I don't intentionally look for college football games outside of you know some of the big ones you know you know bowl games one two are playing each other during the regular season or some Notre Dame game sometimes interests me but um you know outside of that I don't generally know who most of these guys are when they get drafted you know some of them you know because you hear the names
04 Justin: Others, you know, you just take their word for it. They're okay. They're a great player because... I never heard of Dorell Reavis and I certainly never heard of David Harris. We were our first in Zacharaupix last year. And they were both pretty damn good football players. I had never heard of either of them. Well, there you go. So a good segue. So we'll call this the Average Joe Draft Special. Jake: Because for the Average Joe, not the Draft Knicks... but the average Joe, you know, we might know. It's the Jets version. We might know just a little bit more than you, but probably not. So you're just going to hang in there and learn as we learn. So let's talk a little bit about last year's draft, because you know, it's good to learn from history. The Jets definitely is a great YouTube video up on the Internet, and I'll post it at the forums tomorrow. is a great video of basically the biggest blunders in draft history. Oh really? Oh yeah, and we definitely have some of the worst. I mean, you know, there's, as Mike Townenbaum likes to say, sometimes your best draft pick is the person you don't pick, right, the person you pass up on. And I think what sometimes happened to the Jets is the worst thing that's ever happened to the Jets. We're the people we passed up on, right, that we let fly. But let's talk about last year. So there are some players from last year who we drafted and we'll talk about. We only drafted four. Right. Well, because we did, well, we, because we traded in a lot of picks, we traded twice up to get up to this point. Justin: We did a great job with the first and second round picks. Two starters on defense for a long time to come. Dorell Rivas and David Harris, they could both potentially be pro bowlers at one point because they're both really good. Rivas is going to be solid as a rookie. Here it is. Pretty good. Yeah, he's gonna just get better and better and better corners aren't usually that good right away Now Harris made a big difference as a middle linebacker and linebackers do come in and can make a difference right away And he did and he's the real deal, too I mean what he lead he led the team in tackles and he only played like 10 games, right? I really started things he is They traded Vilma and they traded a number one pick Jonathan Vilma a pro bowler a rookie of the year Because this guy yeah, you know, they obviously made a good pick there. I Jake: Totally agree. I mean Reavis, you know, we was a total he was a neat pick and it was a value pick And it was a guy we wanted they traded up to get him. That's a great pick He started, he played in one of the toughest seasons we've had in a while. He was certainly, he showed flashes of really being on it. I thought for a lot of time he was thrown to the wind. I thought it better when they gave him a little help towards the end of the year. You know in the beginning they kind of spoke. Justin: The whole defense is much better towards the end of the year.
00 Jake: Absolutely, and maybe that was pressuring the quarterback. But he definitely has some upside. You know, I look at him and I don't say oh or anything I say. That guy, he was good last year. If he really hits his stride in two, in three, in four years, then he'll be someone who will hopefully be picking off Brady for a long time to come. Harris, absolutely. I mean, Harris is a machine. Amazing. This guy starts last year. uh... and then this year and then we trade away you know the number one the guy who we had planned there so that that says a lot about him his smarts his ability to play three four uh... that's uh... what more he he's on my short list of uh... new jersey so Justin: who here's a game time jersey like you're gonna wear to the game or just to have Jake: no my night night jersey yeah the game time jersey well so what else is Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Justin: Good Lord! I have jerseys that I don't even wear anymore. They're just sitting in my closet. Jake: Well of course, because they're Abraham and they're Keesha and Johnson, and that's why they sit in your closet. Justin: I was dead on my... Curtis Martin, I still wear the games. Jake: Yes, well because you can wear a Hall of Famer. Justin: That's true. I'll probably wear a Curtis Martin jersey to the game. forever. Let's talk about the other two picks. Alright, sorry, the other two picks. It was 6th and 7th round picks. The 7th round pick, I want to talk about first chance he stuck you. He played in the preseason. He played alright. I'm interested to see what this kid can do in the preseason again this year and maybe get into the game as a 3-4 wide receiver. and the sixth round pick was Jacob Bender, who I believe got some time, didn't he? Yeah, he did. Played at right guard maybe, or left guard, one of the two. I can't exactly remember. Someone email us and tell me where he played. Yeah, or you can just go look it up. Just go look it up somewhere. They didn't really play, they didn't make a difference, so you know, the jury's still out on those days. Jake: Yeah, but be honest, you don't pick in the sixth and seventh round looking for people to play. I mean, you pick there kind of like there's a guy who maybe fell or maybe has some upsides, some hidden talent. Oh, that's what I mean. The jury's still out on that. And to be honest, if nothing happens from a guy, if out of the draft, if 50% of the players out of the draft are starters from day one and play for three to four years in your team and make a difference, that's great. So if the sixth and seventh round picks just turn into absolute nothing, who gives a rat's ass? I mean, it doesn't matter. Yeah, they maybe have upside, they maybe turn into something, they maybe return a punt, but really when you're drafting that late, it's kind of just their crap shoots and they might turn into something or not. And let's not bring up the Tom Brady, but okay. So let's talk about this year. I mean, glad we did it on this day because if we had done it last night, this would
00 Jake: have looked like a whole different thing. because as we record this just a couple hours ago, Miami sealed the deal. It was long being talked about that. Miami was either putting up screens or not. But basically they only looked at one guy. They didn't really talk to anybody else. And they went for offensive tackle Jake Long. and signed him and that's it done deal like that he's he's signed his contract he's ready to go and Justin: um you know what do you think what do you think about the pick for for miami oh that's a typical parcells uh move you know it's it's what he does he builds the team the way that you traditionally are supposed to build a team from the inside out, right? You start with the offensive line, the defensive line, and the quarterback, and then you go to the position players on the outside, you know, you stay, it's kind of the way that you build the team. And, you know, this is what he felt he needed to do. He thought he had a cornerstone there, and then he picked him. And, you know, that's a good move, I guess. That's what you have to do if your team won one game or two games, however many games they won last year. They won one game. I will say, you know, it's... There was no Peyton Manning out there. Jake: It was a tough draft. And again, Miami's in a tough position because they have a lot of needs. Justin: You could say they have a huge needed quarterback or at least they don't have a very big question mark Yeah, but no no Peyton Manning out there. So there's no need to like even think about it Jake: They're running back situated Ronnie Brown is tenuous. I mean he's played very well at times, but he's also played hurt Justin: He's hurt almost every year. So you know, what's what and he never carried the load in college either if you remember What we're doing the draft special he always was a uh He always shared the workload with Cadillac Williams. So they lost Zach Thomas, so you have a middle linebacker need. Jake: Jason Taylor is not getting any younger, so you have a defensive end need. The receivers are absolutely nobody. They traded away almost everybody on the roster last year. So really the the Miami Dolphins. So you may as well protect your quarterback. So you might as well. But their offensive line is a great place to go. And it's something that in two to three years, when they're ready to put in the better quarterback, to have the better offensive line will help that quarterback. So it's a good pick. They got him for good money. They paid him less than the guy that was in the market as well as paid last year. But they also made him the higher signing bonus that did this kind of weird deal. It's a good pick for them. And you know. You know, does it does it make me worried as a jet fan? No, not really So I don't think that team's gonna be very good for a year or two In you know in a while he could be good But he's not someone who I feel like it's gonna dominate a game, right? Justin: He's never fear an offensive lineman, right? So that never fear an offensive line. Oh, man
01 Justin: He's gonna dominate the game. Okay, so now Just don't fear it So now we have number two on the, on, you know, Jake: basically St. Louis Rams are on the clock, which is crazy town. I mean, it's like four days before the draft and the second pick is already on the clock. They actually can go and start making negotiations if they knew that whoever they think they want. So there's a couple people in that... that have been looking at all the mock drafts, and I didn't do a mock draft, and I'm not going to do a mock draft. But there's Chris Long, who's a defensive end from Virginia, that they're saying. There's Glenn Dorsey, who's a defensive tackle from LSU. And then basically, those are the two that look like could land in the Rams. I mean, maybe Vernon Gholston, the defensive end from Ohio State. Justin: The Rams need defense more than they need offense. Yeah, absolutely. And if they're going to pick a defensive end, it's going to be Chris Long. And if they're going to pick a defensive tackle, it's going to be Glenn Dorsey. It does look like between those two picks. There's no, yeah, according to what all the quote unquote experts say, you know, we... as disclaimed earlier on are not experts, but it doesn't look like there's any middle linebackers or linebackers even for that matter that deserve to be picked with the second overall pick unless they you know the wild card is always the quarterback right so if a team falls in love with the quarterback they can pick them anywhere. from two to ten anywhere. Quarterbacks you could pick with the number two pick if you like them. Now they don't necessarily need a quarterback, but Mark Bolger's not getting any younger and he's gotten hurt the last couple years. So you know maybe they like Matt Ryan, maybe they pick him. You never know. I mean you never know any of these any of the top ten... can be that quarterback. So you want to just take a stab and just guess they'll pick Chris Long? Jake: I think I think consensus is they'll pick Chris Long and then it becomes the third team which I think is more more interesting again with a team with a lot of needs the Atlanta Falcons who are coming off the the Vic roller coaster or train wreck as it were they have got issues they certainly they certainly have a quarterback issue big time. But, you know, it's a new coaching staff in there and some say, again, if you're playing it, you're playing the numbers better and there's not a high quarterback in your draft, better go for, you know, the big guys in the middle. So, you know, will they go for Dorsey? I think if we're saying that Chris Long is gone at number two, number three, Falcons are probably, you know, I don't know. I mean, I don't think Matt Ryan is someone that they would go for. I don't think that that's their thing. Justin: Yeah, they've been just- completely burned by first-round quarterback. But Vic, I mean, I know that that's unforeseen, but I think they'll pick Glenn Dorsey if it goes the way that we're saying it's gonna go. Jake: Right, if it goes to three. I mean, that's the thing about picking the draft that I always find
00 Jake: so difficult to, I mean, I know people love to make their mocks, but your mock only is as good as Basically the first one you make wrong. We got lucky because the first pick was already picked. As soon as you pick the third one and that one is actually wrong, basically the whole rest of it could be wrong. If one person trades up or the Falcons trade down to KC to trade up to get Matt Ryan, then the whole thing goes off. So it kind of gets a little weird with that. But again, you know, for the Falcons, there's also another. There's Joe Flacco, who's a quarterback from Delaware, who also looks very good. And some people rate him even higher than Matt Ryan. So, possible they wait and they pick him up in the second round, you know. Don't have to pay as much money. Don't have to worry about, you know, putting all the pressure on that one guy. So, yeah, I would say that they probably go with Glen Dorsey. That seems like the safe pick. This seems like a draft of safe picks. which leads us to the team that never picks safe and last year got the number one pick and now it's picking number four. By the way, for you draft people, that mean don't, don't always think the game, the first round draft pick of, you know, helps you win games that year, because here's the Oakland Raiders. They had the first round draft pick last year and here they are picking number four again, so, you know, they certainly didn't do very, very good. Um, but very well. you know where they sit so now they've got on the baby if we think that it goes well we know goes jake long and then chris long and glenn dorsey and what we're on the greens here now we got some choices does now we got a whole bunch of you know interesting things to they need a quarterback no realistically raters they picked a clear back last year they paid a bunch of money so matt ryan's off the table you know do they need defensive end Yeah, they could probably use a fence then do they like speed and high speed guys Darren McFadden? Yeah, they could probably use a running back You know defensive tackle and Cedric Ellis is rated that highly. Yeah, they could probably go for that too. So This is where it gets a little bit sticky. You know, where do you think where do you see the Raiders picking? Justin: Uhh, realistically or as a Jets fan? I'll go as a Jets fan cause that's who you are. Well, as a Jets fan, I want them to pick anybody but Jaren McFadden. Jake: So I think I can sense who you want to drop to us, okay? Yes. So you want them to pick either Ellis or Goldston? Yes. Justin: Realistically. Who the fuck knows? Man, the Raiders are just absolutely insane. I think they'll probably pick McFadden. He'll, Al Davis will just fall in love with the fact that he could be like, you know, a Marcus Allen. Like the next kind of big running back. He just picked his quarterback. Now he gets running back to the future. And, you know, in his mind, big Raider offense. Although we all know that's not. necessarily true yeah but I think they'll pick their mcfadden you'll see the picks for from mcfadden I agree
02 Jake: I think that mcfadden is probably the sexier pick depends if you know again Oakland does that they pick the sexy pick Justin: yeah they just do they like they're like the yankees like they like the flare Jake: they like the flare yeah they do all right so I'll say you know again For McFadden to drop to us, I'm not as excited. I feel like we're rich with running backs. I don't think we have. I don't think we've seen the most out of Thomas and certainly not Washington, you know, with the horrible offensive line that we had last year. I'd love to see what they can do in front of a good offensive line. So if... Justin: I think Thomas... I think he's in. He's a dog. Dog already? Jake: Boy, I'd love to go back to those podcasts back in last August when you were talking about how he's doing it. Justin: I'm on a bad wing. He's a dog. Jake: So you want to go pick up a brand new one? Justin: Well now I've actually seen him play. He's a dog. Jake: Yeah, we had a horrible running back. He's old. He's crack. Horrible running back. I mean, horrible offensive line last year. I mean, just a sieve. Justin: Yeah, no, no, no. He's a dog. Get rid of him. All right, so you're saying- No, he doesn't fall forward. He dances, you've seen it, those things aren't gonna change, he's a dog, goodbye. If we have a chance to, you know what, let's get to the next pick to the Chiefs, and then we'll get to the bus, where we can actually talk about this. I think they're actually gonna proudly trade. I think if Matt Ryan sitting there, they could either that Matt Ryan's going five Whether or not yeah, whether or not it's the Chiefs whether or not it's the Ravens trading up Whether or not it's the Panthers trading up Someone's trading up to that fifth pick or it's the Chiefs staying there picking Matt Ryan Matt Ryan going right before the Jets at 6. That's where he's going to go. Jake: I kind of like that. It's a good theory. I honestly think that they might just pick Matt Ryan. Justin: I think they might just pick Matt Ryan. Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's where I think he'll go, whether it's them or someone else trading with them to get there. Jake: So you don't think it'll be us trading with them. Justin: Jump up one spot to grab Matt Ryan. To make Matt Ryan? No, I don't think so. So then if he's there, if he's there at 6, this is where the mock... It's just fun to talk about situations and not just mock it out. Let's just say the Chiefs go ahead and say, we need defense. We're going to pick Cedric Gallus. Okay, so they have Cedric Gallus. So now the Jets are on the clock. There's Vernon Golston sitting there, everyone's saying Vernon Golston's the guy that needs to pay cookies. He's, you know what he is, he's 6'4, 265. He's not a defensive lineman, he's not a linebacker. He's like a tweener kind of guy. And you know, maybe that fits in with what the Jets are trying to do where they could play him all over the place. But for the most part those tweener guys don't necessarily make it so far. So you got this guy, Goulston, sitting out there.
01 Justin: You got Matt Ryan sitting there at 6. Uh... And let's just say there's a miracle and you have McFadden sitting out there. So let's... Well then I would just take him. Jake: Alright, let's just... We'll do that. I wouldn't mess around. But... But I was... Hold on, let's say that those three, because those seem to be the three that the jet fans are looking at would love to fall to us. So let's say for some miracle, somehow, either we trade picks with Casey or whatever it is, but somehow, Goldston, McFadden, and Matt Ryan all fall to us in our spots. We have the chance to pick all three. Tell me why you would pick one, two, and three and what the reasons would be. Justin: I would pick McFadden first. Well, first of all, I'd pick McFadden first, Goulston second, Ryan third in that order if I had to choose between those three guys. McFadden, because he could probably right away be very impactful on the side of the ball that I think we need the most help. Colston, I just don't know if he's going to be anything more than what Brian Thomas is as a first round pick. Brian Thomas is okay. He's just okay. Yeah, no he's not. So that's what I see him as. To be honest, I don't think we should be going and picking a quarterback in the first round. So, Matt Ryan, sorry Charlie, I don't think we should pick him. But with that said, if Matt Ryan's on the board and McFadden's not there, I wouldn't go ahead and pick Gholston over Matt Ryan. I would try and trade out of that spot with a team that wanted Ryan. Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you on this. Jake: I think that McFadden, I think, is too McFaddish to pick. I really, again, the running game. It was more or bad running game last year is more to do with our offensive line We I think we've sure that up in the offseason I think you know the pace that the thing that we weren't able to do last year other than run Was get to the quarterback and if you look at the Super Bowl and you know people like to copy what happened in the previous Year and who did well and why they won If you look at the Super Bowl you look at the Giants versus the Patriots the Giants won that game You know from a lot of reasons, but the biggest reason was they pressured the heck out of Brady They had two people who or three people who could get through the line and pressure They made that offensive line that people talked about a whole season how freaking great they were they used to have with the New England Patriots Offensive line do the guys remember all the interviews with them. It just made me sick and they made them look like Swiss cheese Justin: They were big they're big boys those giants defensive lineman and they are boys they are but you saw what they were playing
06 Jake: Right. They were playing a hybrid the hybrid 4 3 3 4 from from Philadelphia first time the defensive coordinator came in and You know, they had speed on the outside. They were able to get to them power through I like that that that position to me If Vernon Gholston is a disrupting defensive end that can make a difference to get to the quarterback, I think that's going to help us win more games. That's going to help every piece. That's going to help Reeva sitting out there on an island. It's going to help every part of our game get to the quarterback. I'd rather see that pick. I think all of them would be good. I certainly Matt Ryan's the least. and that's a scene something in him that just you know is that no one else is seen but clearly he just do you know usually court but school how much higher because they're they're much higher ranked in you don't put some money you can put you know fifty million dollars in somebody might as well put into a quarterback that ryan kim school all over the place he drops down no one's really excited the number two guide in a talk about the number two quarterback at away down to the draft so it just doesn't seem like he's a game changer Um... And to me, I think we need a game changer next year. Matt Ryan's not going to come in and game change on 2008 season, or probably 2009. So to me, that doesn't seem like we've put enough. We haven't put enough into Kellen Clevens to see whether he can do it. He won some good games. He won against the Steelers. But we have to see what he can do with a good offensive line. And a defense I can get. people off the field. So to me it's a Gholston pick first, then probably McFadden, then Matt Ryan, which leads us with our buddies the Patriots, which I don't really care what they do. So let's talk, so that was the first six to get us to where we picked. God, let's hope we don't pick, well let's hope we do pick later in the rounds next year, but it'll take forever. But let's talk about some other needs. So what are the things would you be looking at? What are their just positions would you be looking at later rounds? Justin: And we've got picks, you know, left and right. Thank you. Yeah, I think that we need a couple of... Well, our first need is kind of what you just said, a sackmaster. Kind of a guy who could blow through the line and get to the quarterback, which we haven't had since John Abraham left. And he was really good at that when he played. He was just injured too often. And, you know, I think we... did great on training him for a first round pick which turned into Nick Mangold. So I think we did good there. But yeah, sackmaster would be would be good. A playmaker on offense. You know, somebody who can make a play with the ball in their hands because we don't necessarily throw the ball down on the field all that well. But we do. deceive. So if the ball, you know, a guy who can make a play with the ball in his hands is something that we can use.
05 Justin: Something every team can use, I guess, right? And then, you know, we could probably use some help in the defensive backfield for sure. So either safety or another corner is probably something that we'll be looking to pick up somewhere in the middle rounds, I imagine. Jake: Yeah, I'd be looking for a high speed. And there's not a lot of wide receivers in this draft that are floating to the top. But I'd love to see a very high speed wide receiver. We have good receivers. We don't have any high speed receivers. We don't have any real fast guys out there. And we lost that with Moss years ago, Centennial Moss. Justin: I thought you were gonna say Justin McCarran. Hahaha. No, I wasn't gonna say Justin McCarran. That's high drops. So you know, if you get though, which is interesting, because it's always interesting to see guys like Leon Washington, right? He's a fourth round pick. a considerable amount in the first two years of his career, but if you go back and look at a guy like Tiki Barber, right? You know, I'm not by any means saying Leon Washington's going to turn into Tiki Barber, but in Tiki Barber's first couple of years, he was a really talented player that the Giants had to figure out how to use. They didn't play him as an every down back. They didn't play him, you know, they played him mostly on third down and passing situations, maybe the draw play here and there. He returned kicks, he returned punts. They did what they could to get the ball in his hands. But then after that they realized that they had a true talent and they made a more of a starting role. Kind of want Leon Washington to turn into that and that's a fourth round pick from two years ago That I think here's the fourth round pick am I right on that? I think you are From two years ago, so sometimes these guys that you pick in the fourth to sixth round They come around three years later and Become the core of the team. So I'd like to see Leon Washington Become more of a factor almost like you know 15 to 20 touches a game Yeah, I'd love to see that happen and see what he can do because I think he's got some talent Jake: What I really like about going into the season and we could talk about the season coming up You know in much future podcast, but I really like about it. It's a lot of consistency You know, we're getting a lot of consistency in some of the key areas consistency at quarterback At least, you know, two players. Systemally average. Well, two players who've been on the team for at least two years, who either one I think can do a good job. I hope one does a better job and steps up. You know, I hope Kellen Clevens becomes the next, that guy. But consistency in wide receiver, consistency even in running back, you know, consistency on a lot of the defensive players.
02 Jake: We got some O-line changes and defensive line, but but there's I like that, you know the safety position consistent We're getting a cornerback spin We need some little help, but it's not like that Just a wiping of a new you know a wiping away and getting of all new players. It's it's the third year of an era Yeah, so that's good. I like that. I like it. Oh, it's the middle, you know Justin: Usually they say like, you know, it takes a coach like they have like a five-year plan Right. Right. So like the first year, it's kind of funny, like how this worked out. The first year is kind of an aberration. It's kind of a throwaway year. And the second year is also kind of like the stepping stone year. And the third year is kind of the year that you're supposed to kick it into gear. And by the fifth year, you know, you're supposed to be a champion, right? But by the third year is kind of when your guys are coming around, you know? Right. You know the guys that you picked to build the team the guys that you brought in to build the team around Are starting to become the core of the team So these are you know man genie tan genie eyes, right? This core that you're talking about and he needs he needs a little bit more. I think to make the core happen. I Jake: Definitely first she was an apparition. It's probably the worst thing that could happen for the Jets in terms of in terms of the you know the history of it because it would've been much better to flip-flop those two years right first year go 4 and 10 sorry and uh... four twelve in the second year to go ten six because then it was show progress i think that we know going from uh... from a playoff win for your first year it's kind of like your expectation level Justin: was go back to the playoffs Sure, and then you that's a really hard thing to do though in the NFL like you guys think about the way that I think we talked about this on the last podcast, but the way that the schedules are Put together like you know man genie had an easy schedule because they sucked the year before Right and they were good so they had a hard schedule. You know what they sucked last year. So they were needs schedule again This is the year. It's so easy to yo-yo. This is the year. It's so easy to go back and forth unless you're just truly a great team and there's only a few out there at this point. That's why they always say what the Pats did last year and what they've been doing consistently being good is so much harder to do than what the Niners did in the 80s and what the Cowboys did in the early 90s. You know, it's just It's so hard to do now with this free agency and the way that the schedules are balanced It's it's easy to yo-yo back and forth kind of hopefully we go like 12 for this year Then we go for 12 next. No, I don't want to do that. Let's not do that Well, let's just throw in the light if the Jets went 12 and 4 and then won the Super Bowl you take a for 12 I take four years okay take a decade I take a decade for 12 after I would take a decade I take at least three seasons I take a decade come on now seriously
02 Justin: anyway Jake: um... so I'll just throw in the last minute rumor just because it just literally went up you know this last couple Oh, what? Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. There's a rumor that's our sound effect That's nice. There's a rumor that the Jets are gonna pick Matt Ryan at the six because they like him apparently and This is all smoke and mirrors and they're gonna trade Chad Palin to the to the Baltimore Ravens. That's all smoke and mirrors fellas I I totally agree I think I think even the every GM, you know is saying this is the April is the month of lies because Basically, you don't want anybody to know what you're going to do. So why would you tell anybody what you're doing? So I would say almost the more you look at somebody, that's the person you're not going to pick. So if you look at the people they've looked, they looked at McFadden and they looked at Matt Ryan a lot. They had them in a lot. So that to me is the smoke and mirrors. That's why I think they try to get Colton-Golston if it lands in their lap. And if they don't, I think you're right. They're going to. If it's Matt Ryan or something, I think they want people to think they want him, so someone will try to trade up to the sixth spot to grab him. Get some more picks. Justin: The student needs players, you know? We need players. Jake: Yeah, I don't think we need as many as we have picks. And I like to ask your strategy. Again, we traded two... We traded four picks into two picks, but those two picks got two guys who started, you know, most of the games and made a difference. So to me, if you want to trade four picks into two picks that become starters on that first year and look like they have tons of upside, that's a great draft. Justin: So anyway, how do you say it? Hey, I have a question for you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Before we like do our sign off thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. I wanted to talk about, because historically the jets have been awful at drafting. I just kind of wanted to talk about, you know, I picked out two or three of my favorite blunders. Yeah. The jets have made over here. So I was kind of, what do you think? What's your favorite? Favorite jets blunder? Oh, I guess what do you think was the worst one that they've ever made? Jake: Again, I don't think it's really that their worst picks are the picks that they did. Such. Well, I know. There are some that people, I think it's not so much that. It's more the people they didn't pick. yes if i went back and looked at you know i'm only go back to you know i two thousand nineteen ninety nine because arts well okay because it's me before that you know my my my feeling of the game wasn't as much so you know am i gonna go i don't know it just doesn't it doesn't seem like stuff Justin: like go back in the history that i have it so i'm gonna go back to let me please some of the jeff fans and this isn't even all that historical but back in 1990 the Jets made one of the worst draft mistakes in the history of drafting ever. The Jets picked number two overall pick Blair Thomas running back out of Penn State
05 Justin: and god was he fucking awful. You know Emmitt Smith went later on in that round. blew that because they could have picked anybody the second overall and they picked a running back and the guy was just awful. I remember seeing him play that's when I had season tickets with my dad and we would go to games and I remember asking him why was Froome McNeil not in the game. This guy stinks and he would tell me he's the guy that they drafted. Number two overall he's gonna be good and then he never he only played like three years I think. He was just awful. So that's one of my least favorite jet picks. What was yours? I don't know. I don't know. Jake: Bear Thomas said amongst the top but it had to be the year. We passed on... we passed on Marino. And I picked someone below him so or above him so yeah that was in Justin: 1983 I think the year the quarterbacks were L.A. Marino They were all Jim Kelly Warren Moon. I think might have even been in that draft There are a lot of quarterbacks and we picked Ken O'Brien Yeah, so to me that's that's got to be up there if you pass on someone who's a Hall of Famer and But again, I think it's not so much the guys you pick but it's the guys you miss and and Jake: God, there's just so many. I don't know. Anyway, I'll put up the youtube video and you can we can already Throw those horrible the horrible draft wonders So let's hope we don't make a draft wonder this year Let's hope we pick some good value picks they add to the team and they can start playing You know in 2008 and help us become the champions that we want to be Remember kids out there in in jetland A couple things, one is the thing starts at 3 o'clock in the afternoon this year. It is also only 10 minutes per round so you don't have as much time to go get your beer. And there's only the first two rounds on the first day so it's 3 to 8. First two rounds and the second round starts the next day I think at 11am and then do all the rest of the rounds. So. Stick in there watch the game watch the watch the draft. It's a fun fun time I don't know if I'm gonna watch on ESPN or NFL Network or just flip back and forth or Tivo one and go to the other But it's gonna be fun I love all the excitement in the trading and then the in the wording and goes Oh the Jets have traded with the Patriots for something else It's always the best part. Doop, doop, doop, dooo. Yeah, exactly. So having said that, do you have any final words, final draft picks, some final draft thoughts on it? Justin: I want McFadden. OK. I want McFadden. All right, well, we will be back next week. Jake: And we will talk about who we picked and who we didn't and where they went and the fun of it all. Until then, as always. McFadden. Go Jets!
