16 Jake: This is the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Thursday, May 1st, 2008, episode number 26. Draft grades. Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast. It's Jake and on the other side of Digital Isle we have, as always, Justin. We could call you, as always, Justin. It could be your nickname. Just wanted to let you know this is the 26th episode of the Jet Kingdom Podcast. Is it really? Yeah, the 26th episode. It's we're getting up there in age Justin: Yeah, that's yeah, that's old 26 episodes do we have that many listeners? We have we actually saw a huge spike as we were talking about the other day Jake: We saw a huge spike of listeners after our last podcast So welcome all you new people because we didn't I wouldn't say doubled but we went up in quite a bit Justin: Now, huge spike. The one from us two and mom. It's sizable. There are some people listening. So welcome aboard the Jets G Jake: the podcast here is what we're gonna talk about so the draft happened we had the 2008 NFL draft and the Jets pick and the just picked and we're going to go over it. We're going to talk about what they picked, why they picked, what we thought. In traditional drafts format, we're going to give grades. I don't know why the draft has anything to do with grades, but for some reason, every draft thing does grades. Head to www.jetkingdom.com. There's actually an article up there on the grading. but we'll discuss that and and justin will kick in with his own set of grades now it's a little but let's talk about the pics so you know that the draft a new format this year it was ten ten minutes in the first round and the seven minutes a second round only the first two rounds on the first day what do you think did you do well of course you watch that but i mean Justin: what do you think about it? well actually of course i didn't watch it Oh man. Do you know why I didn't watch it with a Patriots playing? You couldn't make it Actually, I was in Massachusetts So there I actually was in Massachusetts all weekend. Yeah way enjoy Being outside and drinking beer and just enjoying life not watching the NFL Draft for 14 hours or however many Jake: Stupid hours. So you're basically saying that you were at some sort of Patriots pansy party and
04 Jake: In Massachusetts I was infiltrating That's sad and that puts you on the list as one of the worst jet fans ever in the history of you know Justin: I know I have a handy-dandy tool called an iPhone and I was able to keep up on everything that was going on without needing to watch the thing because there's nothing to really watch you just kind of find out what happens that's all it's about to me. Alrighty well let's let's first go over Jake: what we thought was going to happen because I actually went back and read this into our podcast. We were- How'd we do? We were dead on except for you. Justin: So when you mean we, you kind of mean you. Jake: So I'm saying we were all right except for the part that you talked. Actually I nailed it. I got Vernon Gholston in the first round, which I thought was pretty good. Yay me. I'd say. Justin: You know I save in Goldstone. No you wanted to make fat in not did what I wanted But then didn't I say what I thought would happen no no basically no No, I didn't I say I had like I had to I said what I want to happen is this what I think will happen is Burning ghost maybe but it was you didn't make an official pick so I gave you all that's because I wanted McFadden and I still want it Jake: Well, we will see how that plays out in the history of the NFL with a bad offensive line that they have over there. Anyway, so the draft went down. The first pick was already foretold. In fact, by the last podcast, we had already told you what the pick was. It was Jake Long to the Miami Dolphins. Justin: We pretty much broke the news to the world. Jake: We broke it. It was important. You were hearing it live. days after it happened. And then the Rams, not a very big surprise, went ahead and picked Chris Long. I think that's the guy that the Jets wanted. Yeah, I mean all the reports now are coming out saying Jets wanted Chris Long. He's Howie Long's son. He was the best defensive end on the thing on the on the draft board. They picked in Number three was Atlanta Falcons who I think was a surprise pick as I listened to our podcast with the one we didn't see Happening which went ahead and picked Matt Ryan Justin: Yeah, that was that was interesting didn't we both think that they would pick Dorsey? Yeah, we did Jake: So they didn't they picked Ryan they've basically said hey listen we got to start fresh We're picking this, you know bright-eyed bushy-tailed young quarterback to be our hope I hope that they don't play him right away. You know the people say that but then you know Peyton Manning played right away, and he's he's okay Justin: Picked a little bit in the beginning and yeah He had he had you know some guys around him and an offensive line and you know guy named Marvin Harrison I'm saying that you can you can survive if you start so
01 Justin: Who their starter should be, Joey Harrington. Jake: So then at the end is number five, our arch nemesis, the Herm, who went ahead and picked probably the best player. They keep saying the draft next, say the best player, best all-around player, but obviously not the need for those, was Dorsey. Which you know every draft nick is now giving them the a they got the a they did the best draft probably them in the dolphins Because they picked this player. Okay, they got a lot of players We'll see how many they think can start but they picked up Dorsey and then really And the reason that we get to the number six pick and the near just picking I mean, it really wasn't a hard pick. I mean, you use two things you could do with that pick. You could pick the best player on the board, or three things. You could pick the best player. You could pick the player you need, or you could trade down. And I don't think we wanted to trade down because I don't think we wanted the Patriots to get him. We picked the best player, and we picked the player we needed. So it's a win. Like, you know, to me, picking Vernon Gholston at number six was the best thing to do. It was the right thing to do. It's the good pick. It's someone who can start this year and can make a difference. You know, we didn't have sacks in the first nine games of the year or ten games a year last year. That's got to change. We're not going to win games if we can't at least sack the quarterback between picking up Pace and now Golsan. I think that changes the face of the defense. What do you think? Well, I gave it an A-. You gave it an A-minus? I gave it an A-. It wasn't an A straight because it really wasn't a choice. I don't feel like they had a choice. I think you had to pick that guy. Basically, what we said is one of those guys will land in your lap, you kind of have to pick them. So, I think they picked the right guy. He's good. He'll be a starter. He'll help. But it's an A-minus. Justin: Okay. I, um, you know, on paper it looks great. Uh, yeah, on paper it looks like the right guy to pick. I'll go with an A-minus too, that sounds about right. Uh, maybe, maybe, yeah, A-minus. And, only because it was exactly like you said, the right pick to make, because of the defensive scheme that we play. Because if we didn't pick them, the Pats would've. We'll be right back. Not to say that if he turns out to suck, maybe that would have been a good thing. But on paper, up front, it looks like the right pick at the time. But I don't know about this guy Pace. I mean, maybe he's good. I wouldn't go ahead and say we've re-formed the defense because of Pace and Gholston. I don't know this Pace guy. I mean, I don't I don't know I've never seen him play and Gholston I've also never seen play. So maybe like you weren't sitting around in Massachusetts Dude, have you ever seen Gholston play? I've watched his highlight reel. Yeah
05 Justin: Oh good those three great plays he made to make him look like a number six pick. It was 12 plays, but yes Yeah, you pretty much saw him play Jake: and last year and last year i watched the i watched the recap of pace pace basically had a great year last year he was kind of a non-moment for the his first couple years and last year he had a standout year i think ten and a half sacks something like that i mean if you put together what looks like a a top round pick uh you know pass rusher with another guy who had a great sack gear last year i i can't you can't say that that's not going to help it's going to help it's going to be a you know Even if they play up to half their experience or half what they could do they're gonna help the game I mean we could barely pressure the quarterback last year So those two people combined I think and then if you throw Jenkins in the middle you you got some difference facing your defense there Yeah, how can you not agree with that? Justin: defense is gonna be Yeah, pretty much completely different. So... So what you just said was just scratch that and move on. No, I didn't say that they weren't going to be different. I'm just saying I wouldn't necessarily rely on, you know, a guy who I've never seen and a rookie who I've never seen play. You know, it should be good. It'll be different. Will it be great? We'll see. On paper, it looks good. Jake: Of course, and I totally agree. This is one of the reasons I'm not. a huge draft guy, I don't believe in the draft as an only thing. I don't think it's the only thing that you should be thinking about. I don't believe in the fans. And there are some who like get mad that we lost or we won the last game because we picked lower. We could have had a higher pick. Again. To me, if you look at the teams who consistently win and consistently win in the playoffs in the Super Bowl, they're always consistently picking in the bottom of the draft and they consistently win the next year anyway. The draft is a great way to pick up some players, to pick up a few prospects, and if you can get, as I like to say, you can get one or two players who start. that next year from the draft, I think that's a great draft. And last year we did that, that's a great draft. This year, if we could have one of these guys start, or two of these guys start on day one and make a difference on the team, that's massive. That to me is a massive thing. Justin: I think you wanna see at least two of them considering that you want Gholston to be. automatic like one of them, you know, you want to see Goulston pretty much start right away, I think. Jake: Well, I know, but if you pick, if you're picking Matt Ryan, that guy, I mean, he might start, but he's not gonna be... Justin: I'm not talking about Matt Ryan, I'm talking about us. Yeah, but that's what I'm saying, like the draft is made up of players who you don't pick necessarily for the day you're gonna play them. Jake: You sometimes pick a player because you think that he might be better in a year, two, year, three, and different positions. have different startings right defensive end running backs
03 Jake: and tackles guards definitely can you can add more on day one traditionally cornerbacks wide receivers quarterbacks and other skill positions Maybe safety, they don't really do so much on day one. They're more of a two, three year thing. The study showed that quarterback basically third or fourth year really come into their own wide receivers second or third year. Clearly, what you use your pick for is also what you think you're going to do that next year. I don't know. I mean, it's interesting to watch how they pick because basically you don't go pick a quarterback who's going to change your game that much that year. Right. That's not a starter who's going to then bring you to the Super Bowl. It happens once in a billion years and they have them across the burger and that's it. Justin: And that's it. Now you can just call it a day and that's the thing that happened. It'll never happen again. Right. You know, it's also telling about We're spending a lot of time on Goulston, but you know the Pats up and traded right out after we picked them So that must mean that they really did want him I imagine because there was no one sitting there that they wanted right there at seven So they moved right out of there, man So that's interesting that that to me means they wanted Goulston if he if he dropped one more spot the Pats would have picked him, I believe. Jake: Maybe, maybe. But they also, Kraft, actually, there's an article talking about Kraft, talking about the draft, and he said, we don't like picking the top 10. You pay them too much money, you don't need them, we don't like picking the top 10. So they might have traded out anyway. Yeah, both the Patriots and the Ravens, who clearly wanted Matt Ryan, Justin: both traded out immediately. completely. Um, but again the Ravens the Ravens just clearly wanted Matt Ryan. Yeah That is you know obvious and they they got right out of there and Moved out of that. What were they eight? I think And yeah, they slid all the way down to like 18 somehow. I think they traded all the way down and then back up Yeah, and they ended up with a quarterback Joe Flacco, which was it was interesting. I didn't watch the draft I'm sure you can probably explain what they did better Jake: I can't explain every little pick but yes, they traded out the trade back in Actually kind of like what the just did last year. Remember we traded up to grab Revis, but that traded up again to grab to grab Harris and this year did it again. So we were both... Justin: We move a lot on day one, it seems, because we did that to get mangled. Do you remember? Jake: We didn't trade in to get mangled because mangled was our pick. Justin: Oh, we did that with John Abraham. That's right. But we seem to get... Last year we traded up twice.
00 Justin: We probably picked. Last year we traded up twice. We seem to do that kind of well. Jake: That's why we only had four picks last year because we traded up twice. And again, I think at last year we have two players who started and made a difference. And two players who will start again this year and make a difference. That's a great draft. That's a fabulous draft. So anyway, let's talk about the second pick which still in round one, we actually traded up from round two up and back. I never heard of this guy. Yeah. And this is where the draft starts to get a little interesting. because we have Dustin Keller, never heard of my life again. We have, let's give the disclaimer that we gave last week, both of us non-draftnecks, non-people who follow college football. Know what I do know though? Justin: That you were in Massachusetts. Jake: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Justin: You know, I think that we've picked some really awful tight ends in the first round in the last 20 years. I think. Johnny Mitchell comes to mind Kyle brain he comes to mind Anthony Beck back to comes to mind Trading up and trading. Yeah None of these guys ever worked out like I don't understand now. I honestly don't get this Jake: I don't get it. Again, I can't say I know every little thing about the Jets and every little move that they have. I think there's two things to say. One is Chris Baker was complaining. He walked out of training camp. Really? Yeah, because he was complaining about his contract which he renegotiated last November. That is clearly... This is one of those indications. This is a parcells move. This is like I'm sending you a signal signal is shape up We can replace you That being said Dustin Keller. He has some really big upside. He is fast. The guy is fast I think he runs a four four five Very fast he is He is, no you're not very fast. You're faster than I am. You're faster than I am. That doesn't make you very fast. That just makes you faster than a slow person who's 10 years old than you. He's 6'3", 242 pounds, but he is very, very fast and he can get that ball. He has great hands, great speed, can get out, make space because he's a size and catch a ball. That's the upside. The downside to this guy is he is not a blocker. So you know in the position where you need to block for Thomas Jones or Leon, he's not going to be your guy. Maybe he can pick it up, but basically he's not a blocker. He's much more of a, they compare it to Dallas Clark a lot. In fact, they said his name a thousand times, which to me it's like well if you compare him to a Super Bowl playing tight end, yeah sure, that's good. I'll take that. Um... He I think he'll add to the two to the two back when we do two tight end sets I think he'll add a lot. He's much more of the kind of Again, he adds more to the receiving core. I think than he does to the to the tight end position. That's okay with me
04 Jake: So I gave this pic I gave it a B goes again I at this point I think they should have picked I would like to go see with a middle linebacker Maybe someone you know to help more on defense. I thought offense didn't really need the help as much tight ends. We have two Two tight ends Bubba Franks and Chris Baker I didn't think we need another today, but if this gets more of a wide receiver type guy well Then maybe he's okay. I gave us all it be what do you give it? Justin: I am giving you a weird face through the digital aisle right now. I don't agree with that at all. It's across the digital aisle. Way across. I'm going to give this a C minus. C minus. Okay, why? And that's like... I'm holding back from giving it a D plus with respect for Dustin Keller as he is now a chat. C minus because I don't get it. Why a tight end in the first round? It just doesn't make sense to me. It didn't seem like a need. I know that a lot of teams have this like, you know, this like a Gates or a Gonzalez or a Winslow or a Cooley or Clark. Now, this is like a trend in the NFL. Jake: Didn't you just answer your own question? Justin: Well, I don't know. I don't get it. I don't I don't I don't think that this is necessarily the way to do that. Like, we're... I mean, look at the Giants. They had their Shockey and then they won the Super Bowl without him. So it's like, I mean, maybe you need those guys, maybe you don't. Right, but they had the guy who fell in for Shockey's role. Yeah, but we have a tight end. We have two of them. I need another one, I don't think so, it's not really a need. I see this as more of a, I don't know, it's a reach. I think they might have fallen in love with some numbers at a combine perhaps. You said he's speedy. I've never, I don't know, maybe he's awesome. I've never seen him play, so who am I to judge? But to me, I just look at the position that he plays, and I don't like the fact that we've never successfully, in my history of vlogets, successfully picked a good first round tight end. Jake: We are horrible with first round tight ends. Maybe this is the end of the drought. Or we could not learn from our history and keep making the same mistake over and over again. Right, but that's a bit of voodoo, right? You're saying that just by picking of just because we're the Jets and we pick a tight end in the first round that equals failure which really isn't the truth. It's that we've made poor choices and the people running this draft aren't the same people who's made this choices. So it's not necessarily a plus b equals c. Again, I don't think it's a... I don't think it's a great pick. A lot of the draftnecks are saying he would have dropped the six places to us anyway.
02 Jake: Why would we do the reach? There's a point of what you say if you want a guy and you think someone's going to get him, then you go pick him up and that's what you do. We ended up with a lot of guys so to me it's okay. It's a B. It's a solid B. Yeah, you know, but then then I was it for on day one, right? That was day one and that actually set us all the way down to Two round because we traded around around three. So we got down around four Day one again was only two rounds and then I think we went for something that that we needed I mean, we clearly identified this everybody knew we needed this Dwight Lowry the the cornerback from San Jose State 6-1 185 You know a guy who had a great junior year, but didn't didn't excel as much in his senior year We need a quote. We need another corner. That's it. I mean, there's we watch last year. We need my god We needed another one right? We could have picked up two or three and still needed more Justin: Oh, he... we do need... And especially when he's starting you're big trouble Jake: We have Miller coming back this year off an injury so he'll be able to play Obviously Leon and Miller will probably fight it out for who returns kicks because god knows they're both really good at it Justin: I would say Miller I would say I'd rather have Miller returning kicks because I'd rather have Miller returning kicks and not playing defense then or whatever you can play defense if he wants but I'd rather have Leon more involved in the offense this year and just forget special teams just play offense yeah I like y'all in the field and get 15 Jake: touches a game yeah I wouldn't mind if they were both in the back and wherever Justin: it landed oh yeah whatever that's cool too I think I got it but to take it to the house Part of the reason why they're so good is that the scheme is so good and part of the scheme is to Is to block and if you have those two guys back there Neither of them are blockers Jake: That's true because no other scheme in the NFL other than the jet scheme is to block Every other scheme is just to fall down and roll around the grass and go how we it right Whatever, dude. Well, remember, we've lost our coach this year. He's gone, man. I know. So we'll see. We'll see if the scheme or the player. This will be an interesting year. We'll talk about that as it happens. So again, in the draft, I would like to see them kind of, I would like to see them go to cornerback or middle linebacker much sooner. I think waiting to the fourth round again, I don't know the players as much so I can't say hey This is the worst guy best guy. I like that. He's a bigger guy
01 Jake: I like you know, I think we you need a combination of corners You can't have every one of your corners be like four nine Nothing wrong with that just saying Shout out but um, but this guy's a bigger guy. He's you know 6 1 I like that You gotta have a bigger guy once a while because he's gonna go up against those Randy Mosses and those freaking Terrell Owens is in the and the big freaking big wide receivers. So So I I gave this one, you know I gave it a B plus because I think it's a need pick and if he and he looked like he's a solid guy I gave it a B plus I just wish they would have maybe I wish they would have waited for Keller to drop them in the second round and then picked this picked a guy or this guy in the third round but you know again it's such a upshot what do you give it for the pick? I'll just give it a C because that's average Justin: Okay, that is... I don't know if he's good, he's good, if he's not, he's not. We needed a corner, so we took him. Should I just record that and just play that back at every pick? Jake: If he's good, he's good, he's not, he's not. Oh no, I actually have something to say about the next time we jump. Justin: I never seen him play, so I don't know nothing about nothing. In the fifth round, we picked... Pretty much our third string quarterback. Hey, yeah, I could agree more Picked Eric Angel who's gonna just be our third string quarterback for the next couple years And maybe if some guys get hurt and maybe if lightning strikes he plays The guy was a huge Prospect a enormous Recruit coming out of high school played in Tennessee. He's The last name seems familiar. It's because he's Danny and his son Then I'm sorry Danny. Are you being serious? Yeah, actually you probably are Great basketball player. I'm sorry basketball Champion champion championship pedigree in this guy's blood Jake: which is pretty cool is that sport we score like every two seconds of the game Justin: every at least twenty to thirty okay Jake: all right scoring matters in that game now now not really until the last two minutes the funds it's a fun sport we're scoring doesn't matter that's kind of like last two minutes poker Justin: i don't know okay go ahead or a nascar for that matter. Anyways, It's not a space. Exactly. uh, you know, he's a third round, a fifth round pick, third string quarterback, he was a huge prospect, and then he just never kind of was as good as he was supposed to be. In college, he was never really caught on, never even really won over the coaching staff and became the full-time starter. He was always kind of in and out. Would play half of games. It was weird.
00 Justin: And I don't know, I'll give this one a B. just because he's got the name and maybe like that pedigree will come through until like shine and Jake: in some moment sometime in the preseason. I mean who knows. I like this pick because it's not, you know, I get a lot of these, I gave it a C just because I think it's a it is a backup position. When you're when you get in the backup position You're not looking at I know I jet fans route to go on this guy's gonna come in and compete for that. No, he's not No, he's not he's not Peeing for anything except for to it to topis You know third string job, you know if he makes the the practice squad that'll be great But what I do like about it is he's a big guy, you know, we've always kind of been in the problem of which adds you know six something six one six two ken ken's i think is like just six six one on this case six six that's not a small man that's a big man so it was just other played basketball well eight what what's basketball okay set this for the event 666225, he's a big guy. There's some upside there. I like throwing a pick in there. I mean, they say the Green Bay Packers always pick a quarterback every year. I think this year they picked two. But you know, they pick one really early too. They picked one earlier and then they picked one later. I think that's the thing is like you do kind of have to just Keep because it's such an important position. Just keep adding them to the roster and if they turn into something, you know, semi okay, you either trade them away and you go with your guy or you, you get another guy. I mean, you look at the quarterbacks of the NFL. So many of them just come out of the Derek Anderson's right. These, these guys are just like, who are these guys or the or Trent Edwards from the Biffle Bills, right? Tom Brady's. Justin: Oh, God, I'm so sick of the Tom Brady picking a 6th round. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And that will be the promo for the draft every single year. That's true. Stay with us, because in the 6th round, someone might pick Tom Brady. Pick Tom Brady. Yeah. Yeah. Could this be the next Tom Brady? Could this be the next Tom Brady? Jake: I don't think Eric Ainge is the next Tom Brady. Justin: Do you think Marcus Henry will be the next Tom Brady? Our sixth around pick? Jake: Well, he's not a quarterback, so I don't think he... Anyway, I gave it a solid C. Just, you know, that to me is average. Should he go Marcus Henry? Marcus Henry, sorry. Again, looks like if you look at the players were picking big guys like 6-4. It's a big receiver This is the helpful receiver because and I think the tight end the key and and this receiver they match up in that We want bigger guys. We need those guys that if there's a jump ball They can go grab it. So to me to pick the 6-4 guy
02 Jake: Again, you're picking a wide receiver in the sixth round. You're really not expecting him to do much other than maybe show up. Justin: I don't even think this guy will even get on the field. Jake: He might not, but he might make some special teams and he might pick them. But realistically, you're picking the sixth round. You're not picking them because he's a game changer. We're going to start this year. I think the two people will start this year, Gholston and Keller. Maybe with Lowry cycling in there, Angel carry a clipboard, Henry, you know, might make the special teams be able to run down and tackle somebody. But again, you have, firstly, have to pick somebody. We didn't have a ton of needs going into this draft. I think we got the needs most of them done by the offseason and then the needs we had, I think we kind of played in there. We do need another answer at quarterback. OK, we do need some pass rushers. OK, that's a good one. We do need some kind of help in the offensive passing game. That's Dustin Keller, maybe. That's Marcus Henry, maybe. And we did need someone in a corner position because we have an actual. I think the one thing I'm a little bit disappointed is I think we needed someone in the middle linebacker position. I would like to see another David Harris clone to go back there. We got rid of Jonathan Velma and it would have been nice to see another guy in there. Justin: I think we're alright. I think we're alright. We'll be still. Well, we brought in Case. We picked Goulston, who's hybrid. And or he's going to play linebacker. Jake: He's going to play both. You know who I'd like to compare him to? The one... Now I'm forgetting his name. Patriots, defensive end. uh... i was killing now set up my tongue how it is opposed to the air outcome on commodities extremely famous always plays well hard anyway but it's kind of that that hybrid kai and and i that's why i see him as Justin: uh... it's only about mike's a role break variable Jake: the variable variable yes That's the guy I see. That's a good grab. Get it, Reebl. That's definitely who I see Goldstein as. Again, Goldstein has a downside. They say he doesn't play on every play. He hasn't played very much. He's only played for, you know, it was like senior year, high school, something like that. He's fresh. He's fresh. He's fresh. And then. the last pick and he knows you know it's not a You know it's just just a pick to the wind some sort of project pick as I call them When when the guy doesn't even have a picture on nfl.com. He has a picture on rivals.com Well, he has it, but so you know you pick up Nate Garner in the seventh round
07 Jake: 211th pick overall and you call it a day. I gave the Marcus Henry a B minus because I think we need some height in our wide receiver. Again, I think they could have done that a little bit sooner, but maybe they think Keller will be that. and you know Nate Gardner offensive tackle You know, put some beef, he's a big guy, 6-6-3. If you look at the picks, 6-4, 6-6, 6-6 again, 6-1, 6-4, and 6-4. We didn't pick any guy who's smaller than 6'1". That's huge, these are big guys, I mean it's like we're picking corn-fred people. Nate Garner, I give him a C+. He can always use some more big guys. Yeah, C. Just give us some big fat guys. That's what we like. So overall, I thought, you know, this wasn't a sexy draft, it just wasn't sexy. It wasn't like, you know, a couple years ago we had the... Justin: You didn't want to fuck this draft? Jake: I would have kicked this draft right out of bed. This was not a sexy draft. Look, you cracked yourself up. That's so pathetic. No, it wasn't sexy. Oh, I loved cracking myself up. It wasn't sexy. It didn't have big tits. It wasn't a big-titted draft. No, it just... In that they didn't pick a wide receiver until the second round. In that most of the guys who were in the first round were like these big line men. I mean it just. wasn't a sexy draft. It wasn't like with these just game-changing, life-changing players. The quarterback core was weak. The wide receiver core was weak. first round it happened like you know three days before the yeah The running back core was weak. Justin: I mean there was a couple first round piques there for running back, but there was no like stud. Jake: It was McFadden and that's it. And we'll see. Again, you put McFadden into that situation with that team who's that bad, he might just be that bad. I mean you- Justin: It cut Dominic Rhodes like the next day. Yeah. Jake: If you put McFadden on the Patriots or on the Colts. the guy would be an all-star he'd win defense you know that he wouldn't work in the year but you get that that's the problem with the top pick is that some of you just put on a crappy team in the crappy teams to make crappy make a great play look happy i don't expect the raiders to win more than six games next year i mean a rookie quarterback and a rookie running back and a line that's old and what receivers I don't know and a head coach that's basically on his last life. I mean isn't he supposed to be out next year? Justin: So I think they wanted him out this year but they wouldn't fire him. They kept him.
00 Justin: That's how bad it is. They're like, we can't fire you because we don't want to pay you. And he's like, I won't resign because I want you to pay me. Oh, that's just great. That is like really the way to win. I will say, though, that's a recipe for victory. Jake: So in a non sexy draft, in a draft, I don't want to fuck. I gave the jet to be, I think, is, you know, wasn't it wasn't a sexy draft. It wasn't fun. It wasn't picking a great stuff. I think they did well with their first couple picks. Again, I think there was no choice but Gholston. They probably would have wanted long Chris Long. But Gholston's a good pick and probably will be a starter on day one. Keller, I think that helps the game that shot he wants to play. He wants to play with the...that's where he came from, right? He came from San Diego. He had Antonio Gates. And Chris Baker is no Antonio Gates. so maybe this guy is more that fashion and the rest of them are just there you know Lowry might be a third-stringer Angel hold the clipboard Marcus Henry will play a lot in preseason I mean these guys are going to do a lot Justin: we're gonna get to know Marcus Henry fourth game of the preseason Yeah, that's a lot. That second half of that third game and that fourth game, they'll really, really be shining. And every Jet Fan's gonna be like, he should start! Yeah, you're gonna have Henry and Stucky on two sides. With Ainge throwing through them. With Ainge throwing. There you go. There's a glimpse. Jake: It'll be good. All right, so that's gonna wrap up our post draft special. Justin: Wait, I didn't even get to give my grade. My overall grade gave you overall grade for some who didn't watch the draft. I'm just gonna give him a B- Just to be ornery B- I just didn't like the trading up to get a tight end Especially when like you said they probably could have stayed there and gotten the guy Jake: I mean they must have thought there was someone in the six picks before them that would have grabbed them. I mean Justin: They went through them and he better be good I don't like the idea. Jake: But again, it's not about who might grab them before you because you never know if someone might jump you or trade their picks to grab the guy. So I think if you got the picks and if you need the guy, just go get him. Justin: Like I said, he better be good. Jake: We had two first round picks. Think about that. Yeah, that's good. Two first round picks. And actually a guy on the Jet Nation, shout out to Jet Nation, woohoo, actually I think it was Sperm Edwards, his name. He might be listening. I'll send him a message so he can listen to the podcast. And he actually said what? You know, the difference in first and second round is also the contract length. Thanks. I think the first round you can do a five year contract and second round you do a four year contract so that in jumping up to grab someone in the first round you actually can
03 Jake: lock them away for a longer period of time. I thought it was an interesting take on it, right? It's not just about what pick you pick at them but how long you get to lock them into a contract. Justin: Great, let's lock that tight in a little bit longer. Jake: Well if he's really good you'll be eating your word. Justin: If he's good I'm willing to. Yeah. I would rather him be good and be wrong. Jake: So here's my last question. Do you have a question? We've been in 40 minutes into the podcast now. Let me throw you a question. No, that's not a yes or no answer. Here's the question. Do you think that the Jets improved their team from the draft this year? Is the team better than they were before the draft? Justin: Yes, or no? Just before the draft or since the season ended? No, no, no. Like before the draft. No, no, no. Jake: No, no, no. Draft from last weekend or, you know, on Friday from now. Justin: Yeah, I assume they got better. I assume by adding five six guys to your roster you get better. Jake: Well you remember these guys might not even make the roster but... Justin: I just assume by adding a first round pick to your... two first round picks to your roster you're getting better. I would have to assume. I mean the Colston movement... Jake: I would just assume that they wouldn't get better. Because if you don't believe in the picks and you think that they picked someone who's just not going to be a game changer this year, I'll give you the example. The Falcons, I don't think the Falcons are better this year because they picked Matt Ryan. They're not better. They're no better than they were last year. Right? The guy's going to come in, he's just a quarterback, he doesn't know crap, he's going to sit behind a horrible line, he has no running back and they're just going to be creamed. So they didn't get any better with that pick. Justin: Not with that one. Jake: Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, that's the way you gotta judge it. You gotta judge it. Like, did they actually move the needle? Justin: Yeah, the Jets probably did. They probably did, though. Jake: I think they did. I don't think they moved a ton. Justin: If Gholst turns out to be good, then, then yeah, they did a great job. Yeah. I think it all hinges on him. Not to put any pressure on you, Gholst, but the Direct Kingdom podcast has said that it all hinges on you. Jake: I'd like to see him in the... 8 to 10 sacks range. Yeah that'd be a nice number for a rookie. Yeah nice rookie you know. Justin: And killer. I would like to see her like, you know like not just sacking but playing as a linebacker. Right. And like you know I'd like to see him moving around maybe not even coming. off the edge maybe coming through the middle or being just the blitzer like you're the blitzer that's it you're blitzing from wherever you are just go and you know what if you have to peel out and cover the running back fucking do it I want to see him get beat shit because that piss me off Wow, I'm already, I'm such a Jeff fan, I've already got him like getting beaten by a running back in the fly. Jake: Well, you're either the jet fan who's calling him an instant bust,
02 Jake: or either jet fan saying he will be the next LT, because I've seen both. Justin: So I'm going to hope for something in the middle. Jake: Yeah, I'm hoping he's a game changer. If he sacks Tom Brady once a season, I say. Thanks for watching. Worth the pick If we actually if we win one of those games this year, that'll be good I don't if I think the overall needle here's my my feeling the overall needle between how many games I thought we were gonna win before the draft and how many games I thought we were gonna win after the draft I think the overall needle hasn't changed. I think this none of these players I look at and go Oh, there's another win Oh Goulston. There's a win It's solid. We got some people to project on. We'll see if we can make them into something. We're going to wrap it up now. Again, if you want to read the article and see the grades, you go to Jet Kingdom. Pretty good. Justin: I just read it. You go to Jet Kingdom. Jake: You did a nice job.
