16 Jake: This is episode 41 of the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Monday, March 9th, 2009. Big Bad Bart. Well, welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcasts. As always on this side of Digital Isle, this is Jake and my main man across the other side. I just did a little double take over the Digital Isle. Meeting me with a surprise logo. Justin: Surprise them, your main man. This is Justin over here. Yeah, there's not too many people out there for you, I guess. not to talk about the Jets. So it's been... It's kind of baseball season, so it's tough to find people that are, you know, really into football at this point. Jake: It's been a few weeks and we're back to talk about the free agency which started at the end of February, so we're now a couple weeks into it. They went out and did some stuff, I think before when we were talking about, there was the possibility of a lot of people including Ray Lewis coming to the Jets, but Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum, otherwise known as T-Rex. T-Rex. because everybody's got to have, oh we had Tangeeny. Are they like T-Rex the big dinosaur? Justin: Are they more like T-Rex the band? Or like who are? I'm going with their own flavor. Jake: I'm going with the big dinosaur. That sounds cool. So they made some splashes. Let's just sort of name off the top three big things. Let's talk about them one at a time and the players and what we think is going to happen. Clearly, there's a shot towards the defense because... Oh, really? Yeah, we signed Bart Scott, we signed Jim Leonard, and we signed Lido Shepard. Jim Leonard and Bart Scott are from the Baltimore Ravens, Lido Shepard's away from the Eagles. But, you know, hitting three things, immediately Bart Scott was kind of... I wouldn't want to call him the poor man's Ray Lewis, but... Justin: No, I wouldn't say that. Jake: In some ways, he's like the up and coming regularist. Let's call it that then. He's a 6'2", 200-foot-pounds guy. Why compare him? Let's not compare him. 28 years old, so he's young. And what do you think about the signing? Justin: Well, I don't think we should compare in any way. to Ray Lewis, it's not fair just because they were on the same team. I think it's a great signing, though, because we got younger at linebacker with losing Eric Barton and then gaining Bart Scott. And and actually, when you look at that, you know, you lose a guy in Barton
01 Justin: who, you know, was with the Jets, but. you gain a guy with Scott who is with the head coach. So and the head coach was his coordinator, his coach for most of his career, if not all of his career. Same goes with Leonard, but we'll get to that in a minute. So I think that that that that is certainly a great thing that Scott could come over and bring the experience that he has in the system that is about to be put in place and can, you know, kind of. lead the linebacker core even though he's the new guy. It kind of gives him an instant credibility which other guys would almost have to come in and earn. Not to say that he won't have to but I think a really good signing by the Jets to get a really good linebacker who knows the system that he's going to play in really well. It's the only system he's ever played in. So all in all a good signing. We'll see how he plays without the Ray Lewises, the Adelius Thomases, the Terrell Suggs around him. Hopefully he's a standout on his own. Jake: Well, I mean, it's definitely looking at this. I mean... They're going to call us the Ravens, New York Ravens or something. That's fine. Justin: That's fine because their defense has been phenomenal for the last five to ten years. They even won the Super Bowl with their defense. That's fine. Jake: That's what I like about these signings. Clearly, he's trying to pick people who know his system because his system is... is not going to be something that they install in training camp. Week one is just like this pumping machine. It's going to take time. I hate to use the bad saying of it's going to take time to gel. But it's going to take time to learn the system. Getting people who know the system in there, who are going to end up calling the plays and making the adjustments on the field, that's important. And so. if it wasn't you know wasn't really was uh... which you know he resigned with uh... the ball ravens that's great he probably could be gone anywhere else he was certainly the older uh... you know certainly most name brand but uh... i think we got a the younger Justin: player that meeting the player with with more more He's not a now guy like Ray Lewis. You'd almost want to say all right We're gonna try and win the Super Bowl now because we signed Ray Lewis not you know kind of like what we did last year With far Bart Scott's a player that they're gonna build upon. Yeah, this is a guy on the tail end of his career Jake: Yeah, absolutely in haste and it'll be interesting to see him. You know how he how he comes out he's he's already a quote machine he said just quote after quote that is hysterical the guys clearly a uh... very dedicated football player uh... there's nothing not to like about the signing it you know there's a lot of money involved but in the free agency with the cap getting bigger and bigger and you know i gave huge props to tenenbaum we went from somewhere
03 Jake: purportedly over way over the cap by you know nine million by twenty million by 12 million, all of a sudden we end up. you know, 30 million underneath the cap by cutting some key players, by moving some people, from re-signing people. But he's doing what we want him to do, which is to make us competitive every year. You know, I talk a lot about this in the off-season every year, which is there is no building for the future. There's no two to three year plan. I don't believe in that crap anymore. You build... one year you start at the free agency, you build your team up, you build it up through the training camp, through the free agency, through the draft, through the training camp, and then you go into the season and you have depth and you make a play every year because the Arizona Cardinals aren't going anywhere next year. They're just not. They had their shot. Justin: to a certain extent I agree with you that you have to take every year as a year and you don't do grandiose you know three year five year plans anymore but there are certain positions where you don't um you know quarterback being one you you'd like to plan out the fact that you're gonna have a uh a guy there for the next five years you want to say you know the the Giants didn't go into Eli Manning saying All right, we're gonna go with Eli Manning and next year We're gonna have an open competition and Eli Manning's not No They know Eli's gonna be there for the next five to ten years same with the Colts and Peyton and New England and Brady and what and whatnot There are other positions that you want to kind of have more of a longer view on and I think the lines particularly the offensive line You kind of want to have a longer view on that, but the position players, meaning the running backs, the receivers, the even the corners and the safeties and the linebackers, like those types of guys are the guys that can make an impact. You can kind of drop them into a team and they can make an impact, a free agent or a rookie. I think there are other positions though, like quarterback in the line that you kind of want to take a longer view I Jake: Think if you can take a longer view in terms of it would be nice if this guy's around But you can't take a longer view is this is our starter forever because yeah Justin: And the first round three years ago Don't draft D brick and mangled in the same first round saying to themselves. All right, we're building for the next three years with these two guys. No, they're actually saying we're building for the next Jake: 10 years with these two guys. That's bull. That's bull. You know why? Because that because mangle stood up day one played day one and it's been good since then. They've been worse Justin: but you're but you're not drafting them to to play just then. You're also drafting him to play eight years from now on your team. That's why you're drafting them in the first round. If you're drafting anybody to play or keeping Kevin Mowie who's still in the League. and who played on Tennessee last year very well mind you so he's been in the league for the last three years and he's still as good as he's been but instead we draft man gold and say okay he can play now
00 Justin: and he'll be here eight years from now yeah but I don't see anything wrong with that Jake: you know why because it's naive because all the signings on the money it is here's the thing here's the difference between you and I You don't follow the off season moves. You don't understand that there's so much money involved in all the signing bonuses and the extra bonuses that come at certain time periods that you draft a guy for eight years, you might resign him, you'll structure his deal so he gets some big signing bonus at some point because you know he's not going to be around and then you want to get your value out of him. So you want to trade him at a good point It's too much of a card game now. It's a nice theory that you get a guy you keep him free Justin: No, you get a guy you wanted to play for you for a couple years played on the Colts for the last 10 Jake: 11 years if he if he cost you too much you cut him really Marvin Harris Justin: Yeah, look at the people who are cutting you played there for like 13 14 years. He's old and he had a bad last two seasons That's why they cut him reality is is reality is if he has a hundred and three catches and 1300 yards and 11 touchdowns this year, he's fucking playing there next year and you know it. No way, they would've cut him anyway. They would've cut him anyway. Absolutely not! They would've cut him because he hasn't been able to stay on the field and he hasn't been healthy and he hasn't been as good. That's the reality of it. If you produce on the field, they're gonna find a way to have you on the team. The reality is the Jets cut coals because coals fucking suck this year We watched them drop ball after ball after ball after ball and I know he wanted out of there So we didn't cut him out of there cut him Jake: What did we do negotiated his contract so he could become a free agent? He then became a free agent and he's basically cutting them No, but there's a difference and that's where I think you're kind of losing the the business side of the NFL It's great to think oh, well you get a guy and that guy plays hard for you and then you and three years later you got another guy. No, no, no, there's also a business side to it, and there's a money thing to it, and you have to hit a cap, and you have to stay under, and you might wanna spend money on a free agent, so you have to cut people who maybe are really great and do well, but their cap is too big for that year. So you gotta cut them anyway. Justin: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you're not gonna watch Indy cut Peyton Manning next year, because they're paying him $20 million. Jake: I would agree that that someone like a quarterback and someone but you know you're using using the number one number one quarterback in the League as your example Justin: Okay, the New England's not cutting Tom Brady in two years. They're not I don't know when his when his uh, Jake: His thing is up either way. They're not I think you're you're if his contract is up or I'm sorry if you're if you don't some 40 million dollar You know sign some 40 million dollar bonus and if they cut and they save that 40 million They'll cut him or to renegotiate with him, but they're not just gonna keep it because he's Tom Brady Because he's an older Tom Brady. Justin: But that's the difference. Re-negotiating is a different thing than cutting a guy. Like, you think the Giants are gonna cut Eli next year because he's making a shit out of money? Jake: No, they just signed Will Dufus. They just signed him to a seven year contract. Justin: But that's what I mean. You think they're gonna cut him in five years?
01 Jake: But it depends on the contract set. Justin: Well, so they're saying, alright, we're planning out for the next five years with this guy. Jake: If no, if in three years he's do some huge roster bonus... to stay on the team and he's been and he's been poorly. Justin: They were. Yeah, they were. Oh, what was that? Jake: And and he's doing that. What if he's doing it? Yeah, if he's doing great, maybe they do it. Justin: Maybe. Oh, come on. I don't see that. I just don't see that that that only happens with marginal type players and with players that are at the end of their careers. I just don't, I mean I don't see it happening with guys in the prime time. The why do people go into a agency? Jake: The why isn't every team sign every team back? Why don't you sign back your best guys? Because you can't afford it. Ah, because you can't afford it. Okay, well that's the point. Sometimes you can't afford it. Justin: Yeah, but that's different than cutting guys. That's letting their contract run out. Jake: Hey, we let go David Barrett. I mean, why would we release that guy? He's so good. Justin: That's, well, I mean, I can't even explain that. I just lost my fool of the year. All right. Because he's usually a default guy for me. If I can't think of a guy, I just go to... Jake: Let's go on to the second of the big signings. Well, you know what? Justin: That sparked a really good conversation. And let's go on to the second guy who also came from the Baltimore Ravens. Yep. Jim Leonard, a guy who played alongside Ed Reed, who is noted as the best safety in football. And I would tend to agree with that. I think he's phenomenal. But Jim Leonard complimented him really, really well. and you'd watch in the, particularly in the postseason, because you really get... to like watch, you know, how many Baltimore games do you really get to watch. But in the postseason they were in and you got to see them play a couple games and they would show like how Jim Leonard just knew the game so well and how he just was a perfect safety because he knew... the scheme, he knew the defense so well and he just knew where to be. And that's what the safeties are kind of supposed to do. Be where you're supposed to be and be where the ball is at. And he, not the greatest athlete in the guy coming out of the combines. He's not jumping off the pages, but also white. Great. You know, we like seeing a white guy on the field. So I'm around. So I've just another phenomenal signing in. It's another guy who just it's another piece that just slides right in in the defensive backfield. So now you have a linebacker and a guy in the defensive backfield. who both know the system really really well and are going to be able to communicate with each other and with the rest of the team, you would think that now the Jets starting defensive backfield is now strong enough with the addition of Leonard and the next guy we're going to talk about in Shepherd
02 Justin: that they can play that style that Baltimore plays where they're going to man up on the outsides and let the safeties kind of run around and play up at the line of scrimmage a little bit more for Kerry Rhodes and It's gonna be interesting. I think the the Jake: You know a great signing you said a lot I'm not gonna repeat most of it, but what's interesting about these two signings you're signing the two Second guys, right? So in the Baltimore defense, the number one guy was Ray Lewis. And you're signing Bart Scott, probably the second guy. Who's the guy that's probably the next best known? Ed Reed. Who's the guy next to him? Jim Leonard. So it's interesting they just signed these kind of, they're not the name brands of the Baltimore defense, but they're kind of their second guys. And it'll be interesting to see. Thank you. Were they the second guys because they were next to these just awesome talents or could these guys, the Jim Leonard and Bart Scott, stand up and be as good as or better than someone like the people they were playing next to? Jim Leonard, I think Bart Scott has a bigger chance of being just a phenomenal player and just blowing it out, kind of shattered by... By the presence of Ray Lewis, Jim Leonard, I think, is a solid player. He does have a smaller guy, so he's going to move around a lot. But how does the effect of Bart Scott affect David Harris? Does that make him a better player? Does that make David Harris a better player? I say yes. Signing Jim Leonard, does that make Kerry Rhodes a better player? I don't know. That one I'm not as sold on. But again, another signing and then you go right to the third signing that kind of we just clearly what we, what they want to put in place, they want a solid defense. They want depth and they want players. So they signed Little Shepherd away from the Eagles. Not as a free agent obviously, but as a, you know, trading away for him. I'm trading a fourth round pick. I know fifth round pick last year It was a fourth round pick this year, but could move up to something next year, depending on how it plays. It was a film ideal, kind of. So Lido Shepherd's an interesting case, because he was a guy who was on the bench, wasn't he? Justin: What? Wasn't he on the bench in Philly? Jake: Yeah, well, that's the thing. He used to be their number one guy, but then they signed to Sante Samuel and kind of benched Lido Shepherd. There's a lot to talk about his work ethic. There's a lot to talk about whether he was unhappy being number two. He's known for his sort of the big moments because there's been games and if I played you as Highlight Reel, you'd be like, oh yeah, I remember that game, I remember that game, I remember that game. It's like where he steps up, grabs the ball, and runs back for touchdown. You're like, oh my god, he just turned the game around. So it'll be interesting to see. He's clearly not, you know, he's not a spring chicken. He's 27. Yeah, but you know what?
02 Justin: Dorell Rivas is like one of the best corners in the league. I truly believe that not as a homer as a but as a football fan, I truly believe that Dorell Rivas is one of the best cornerbacks in the entire entire league. And I think this adds to it, you know, it's just adds to it and Leonard. I just want to go back to Leonard. We haven't, I cannot remember. And maybe Leonard's just not it either, who knows? But I cannot remember the last time that Jets had a free safety who could actually cover. Just going back... I can't remember. They would always, they would always, always, they get beat by tight ends over the middle, and they get beat by long passes. And... I cannot remember back in time, like even like the good safeties that they have have never been able to really cover. And that even includes Rhodes, he's not the best cover guy. It'll be interesting to see if Leonard can help there and over the middle with the tight end and if Shepard can help out there on the outside where they can play man out there. It'll be interesting. Jake: I mean it clearly shows where Rex Ryan's head is not that anybody thought that this would be even you know Yeah, going out there signing the big, you know big offensive free agents Justin: But you know that might be why he decided to keep Schottenheimer in place so that if you just didn't have to worry about it. Yes, like I agree. I'll get I don't even I don't even Have to worry about this off in his offense. This guy's had this shit together for three years. Let him Yeah, whatever. Let's do it our fourth. Jake: Here's the big... Justin: He's got no quarterback anyway. Jake: Here's the big free agency signing in on the offensive sign. We re-signed Brandon Moore after... Important. Love him. Right? That was actually a good one. Although we were trying to go for a guy from Pittsburgh and it didn't work out. So that's okay. Justin: Yeah, but that's okay. Moore is very... he's fine. He's the fifth guy on the offensive line. That's fine. Jake: We re-signed Tony Richardson. Justin: That's also very good. I like that. Jake: And really the big one, we signed Jay Feely to one year. Justin: That's a huge one. Special teams, that's big. Jake: No receivers, no running backs. Justin: Does that mean Nugent's officially just done? Is Nugent in camp? Jake: Nugent actually went and signed with Tampa Bay. Justin: Oh, good for him. Jake: So, you know, it's kind of interesting. And then the big releases, the kind of guys, again, from the offense, we lost Chris Baker, who went off and signed with New England. That hurts. Not a lot. I don't think it hurts that much. It hurts more that he signed up with New England, because none of us are sitting over there. Justin: I don't care. I mean, fuck it. It's just Chris Baker. I hope he fucking dropped trips and... fucks up a play in overtime for them. Jake: I'm more happy that Bart Scott hit Bart Scott hits him hard when he comes across the middle.
03 Jake: Let's see, David Barrett is. Justin: We have we have a fine young tight end. We don't need. We don't need Baker any longer. Jake: David Barrett's gone, Eric Barton's gone, Ahmaud Carroll's gone, Jesse Chapman's gone, Mr. Lavernius Coles, signed with Cincinnati, so he'll be with that. Justin: Jesse Chapman was, he was, he really had it a lot. Really sad to see him go. Jake: He was hurt and then he was a drug addict. What can you tell me? I thought he was an injured drug addict. Justin: What are you gonna say? We lost Kyle Law so far. He was a drug addict and an injured guy. Jake: C.J. Mosley. C.J. Mosley. That's interesting. Went to Cleveland with his old buddy, Mangini. Justin: What's his face? Brett Favre retired? Jake: Yeah, we've already said that 100 times. Hank Petit. So it's kind of interesting. I mean, there's certainly some I think. Petit, where did he go? Justin: Did he retire, Petit? Or did he go back to New England? Or did he go to Cleveland? Jake: He's gotten his guy and hasn't ended up anywhere yet. Justin: He'll end up one of those plays. He's one of those guys that I'll stay with. Jake: So before we head off to the other kingdoms, let's do a little bit of grading. So we've kind of went over all the moves so far. They're clearly defensive. So grade T-Rex's first whatever, I guess he's maybe been there a month, let's call it the first 30 days. Let's grade him A through F, T-Rex, so we got to give it a 10 because this isn't obviously all Rex Rex, but so let's say for Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan, the T-Rex give him a grade, 8th and F for the first 30 days from what you've seen so far. What would you give them and why? Justin: I'm gonna give them a B plus Jake: B plus I Justin: Yeah, I'm not giving them an A or an A minus just cuz just cuz I'm just not giving them that in their first first grade Got a strive for something And and I don't know if we've improved enough on offense Well, we haven't. We've lost everything on offense. We've gained nothing on offense. That's what I mean by improved, because I mean, the defense is one thing, and I mean, hey, Baltimore won games with your defense in a lousy offense for a long time. But I mean, I'm gonna be really upset if our defense is gonna score like four points a game. We did lose a receiver and didn't replace him with anything. You know, I don't think Brad Smith is the answer. Maybe Chancey stuck you, but again... Drafted David Clowney, maybe some of these guys are gonna step up in their second third years. Jake: We still haven't hit the draft yet, so there's still lots to happen. Justin: Yeah, receivers don't do shit in their rookie years anyway, especially the draft junkies. Jake: Don't tell that to the draft junkies, because they're all looking for a receiver in the first round.
02 Justin: Yeah, well, you could draft a receiver in the first round, you're not gonna get anything out of them. uh in the first round the only receivers that do anything are guys like bolden or or um who you find in the second third round or or what was his name uh colston who was the seventh round pick or wane crebet who wasn't drafted you know you find guys like that and receivers usually the talented guys don't do anything for their first couple of seasons But um, defense they've done a good job. So that's where the B plus plus they've shown that they actually had a strategy in place where they were going to triangle after some of the guys that knew the system that he knew he was going to put in place, meaning Scott and Leonard, they definitely pinpointed those. Couple of guys and got them so that's good. They knew what they wanted and they got it and then Shepard to compliment is is a fine compliment and you know Hopefully Hopefully they'll do something on draft day. That'll make the team better. I Still don't know what they're gonna do a quarterback. No one does but Again, that Baltimore team won with Trent Dilfors, so who are we to say that they're not doing their thing correctly? Jake: Where everybody, I would give them a, I say a solid B. I'm not going to go for a plus because I think, again, it's kind of, it's too half-sided, right? it's clearly like it's all focus on the uh... on the defensive side I think the signs they did what I do like about it is it does seem other than the one the one guy on guard I think from from slipping on his name from the Stegors who they didn't end up getting oh the Hawaiian guy right yeah yeah Justin: that's fine though because more knows the offense and that's fine I know no no but I'm saying you know Jake: other than that it seemed like they went for who they wanted to get and they got to me. There's the stories that they arrived at Bart Scott's house at 1215 a.m in the morning. Justin: With a bunch of coaches, right? Jake: Yeah, they knew him, they wanted him, they were getting him and I like that. They didn't F around, you know, they were going to get the guys that they want and getting two really good players of the three available from, you know, from Ravens getting two of them. I think is pretty good. They picked up, you know, they have to have the coaches, a couple coaches come from the Ravens. So there's a real good chance, you know, that they can take a lot of these pieces now and how fast can they build it into something that resembles that defense. I'm hoping it's quicker, you know, sooner than later, but I get them a good solid B. Again, we'll see after the draft, they might be able to push up to a B plus or A minus, depending on what they do in the draft. But it's a good start and I like their attitude. The kind of players are going after. Even when they messed up with the Brandon Moore thing, they still signed him back.
00 Jake: So we still ended up with net net. We got the guy back who we liked and had. Curly was a bit of a cap issue so that's why they released him. But I liked it. So let's go to some other kingdoms because there's been some other big news Justin: Signings use trades In in the in the division there's been a lot of action. Where do you want to go first? You want to go up into Western, York? Do you want to go to New England? Jake: Where do you want? Yeah, let's let's start with some of the biggest one on the on the block right now Because it just came out two days ago, which is that uh Tio released from the Cowboys signs with a one-year deal. Justin: Perfect way to sign him, by the way. Jake: So should we have signed him? So he signed him to the Bills. So Tio went to the Bills. Should we have signed him? Justin: No, not right for New York, but great for the Bills. Good job, Bills. I'm sorry to say as a Jeff fan, they did a good job. There's nothing in Buffalo. So Mr. Spotlight, it's on ya. You have it. It's on you. You're the only thing there So you want it you got it and that's what he wants one year not a commitment one year If it goes horribly wrong, okay, so what one year they got Lee Evans Who's a damn fine receiver who's now gonna be freed up because Tio is gonna attract a lot of attention And, you know, like I said, there's nothing there. So just the fact that, you know, I went to school up there, so I have kind of an affinity for the location, for the area. And the bills were kind of, I mean, the economy up there is just crap-tastic. So, they needed a little kick in the ass and TO was going to give it to them. So I think for that reason, and the fact that, you know, it's a one year deal, I think the Bills did a great job. Now for the Jets, this worries me because now you have two of the best receivers in the league in our division. in Tio and in Randy Moss. When Matt Castle's playing Randy Moss is a weapon, when Tom Brady's playing Randy Moss is nearly unstoppable. The guy scored like 23-24 touchdowns that year. And Tio's a difficult guy to... could keep contained, you know, he could go the whole game without touching the ball then. Boom, you know, 80 yards down the field. So, that's a big one. And Reavis is going to have his work cut out for him. He's got one quarter of his games. He's going to be manned up against two of the better guys in the league. Jake: Yeah, I mean I think the it's a good move for the bills. I'm not gonna Justin: I'm not gonna play the haters a really good move for the bills Jake: I don't think it will I don't think it is a good move for the short term for the bills I don't think it's gonna get them what they want, which is playoffs I mean, this is a team that has not been the playoffs since 1999
02 Jake: That's coming on 10 years. That's that's bad and in the last you know four years It's been they've been five and eleven seven nine seven nine seven nine So I mean they can put them put together a winning season at all I mean granted the Jets go up and down we're a freaking yo-yo team But we can put together a winning season get to the playoffs and then lose I mean they have not seen the playoffs in ten years I think this gets them a few more wins. Like I was, do you? Justin: They're pretty talented on offense. You know, they have a they have a an OK quarterback who's, you know, who can manage a game fairly consistently. They have a decent running back in in Marshawn Lynch who can play their their O lines pretty decent. And they have two very good receivers. Lee Evans is a really good receiver as a two. He's a really good two. Not a one. But if he got T.O. next to him, boy, can he fly down the sidelines. Jake: But is T.O. a one? At this time in his career, he's a one? Justin: Yeah, I think so. I think he's still considered a top flight receiver in my book. I mean... Jake: He's a head case though. Justin: Wouldn't you say that he is though? Jake: Yeah, no, I think he's a top fighter receiver. I just I just think that his baggage is so tremendous and his willingness to Put that aside is so Justin: I think what you're looking at his numbers here. I'm looking at his numbers from from last season You're right. His numbers had decreased last season. But again, you have to remember Brad Johnson was his quarterback for some of those games, and he was god-awful. Jake: Here's my prediction. Write it down. Put it in the books. Here's my prediction for TO. You're going to see what generally happens to TO is he does this first year really helps out, second year starts to go down, third year they get rid of him, and he starts pissing on the quarterback. Kind of like he goes in these little spans, right? So he starts off well. I think what you're going to see that, you can see it in one season. And so you're going to see a micro, his micro, because he doesn't have a lot of time left. So he's going to start off really good. Everybody's going to be talking about pro ball. And then he's going to start to decline in the middle there. And then by the end, it's going to be pissing on the receivers. They're not doing the thing. They're not doing the ball. Justin: That's what the Bills do, though. That's actually kind of funny, because the Bills always start off kind of opposite. Stink it strong and then the middle of the season they kind of fumble a little bit and then towards the end they just fail It's kind of funny. Maybe maybe teal will follow the pattern but last year, you know, he did have a decent season He had 69 catches about over a thousand yards and 10 Dutch downs And that's what a really shitty quarterback playing for about a quarter of those games So, I think he'll help. It'll be tough to cover him. I think he's still a top flight receiver in the league. He definitely has a year left in him and that's all the Bills assigned him for. So, he's definitely a tough cover for those two games. Jake: So, what is it saying to the Bills, if I were the Bills fans? I mean, again, it feels very much like the F.A.R.B. thing.
02 Jake: It's like, okay, you're getting a guy who's skiddily on his decline. He probably has more years left in him. What are you saying to the Bills fans by signing it? That we're making a shot at the Super Bowl this year? Justin: You know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? Exactly what you were arguing earlier in the year. Earlier in the year. Earlier in this podcast. Build every year. That you can do it for every year. And you know what? You add a TO for 6.5 mil, which doesn't seem like a whole lot of money when I see some of the other... Numbers floating around for like a Houshmansada. So what, you take a flyer, you get them for a year, your offense might be pretty damn good for that season. Who knows? For the Jets, bad. For the Bills, where there's no other game in town, good. Jake: I think it'll be good to start. I think in the end of the day, come the next year, my feeling is they'll be worse off than they were, meaning they will not gone out, got a good receiver. They will not set up for things. Thanks. Whatever. I don't think it'll help them in the end end, but they might win one or two more games, which in somewhere in this league that might get you to nine wins, which might get you to a playoff spot, although not in the AFC East. So good for them. So the other big one, I guess, you're talking about the Mac Castle. Justin: Yeah, shaking it up. Getting rid of Vrabel, which is, you know. you He's been kind of a staple on that team. He's the guy who catches all the touchdowns on the goal line. And going up to Kansas City with Castle, it's very interesting. And there was that whole saga with Denver in the division and McDaniels going up there to Denver and having Denver and the chiefs kind of saying, you know, talking about... about what's his face Cutler and how maybe he'd rather even have Castle than Cutler. It was very interesting saga there in the division and New England is now I guess basically saying Tom Brady's good to go. We're going with Brady. He's not retiring unfortunately for us and he will be fine for... You know day one so I I I doubt we even see him in the preseason. We'll see him play like three series He'll play like in game three for like the first quarter. Yeah, I think it's you know interesting Jake: definitely the It's a strange one because you put a franchise tag on it you you generally end up getting a first round On somebody obviously wasn't worth it Justin: Clearly, he wasn't worth the first round pick. Jake: Well, and it feels like a little bit under the back door, right? Because you have Pioli, you have Belichick and Pioli kind of doing this, kind of like, hey, send this over to me. So it feels a little bit, you know, sending the same guy. Justin: I don't think Belichick would help. Help a guy in in the division. Well then are in the in the conference
00 Jake: I'm sorry if you have to get if you have to get pissy about it Then I guess that's exactly what what the gestures to do the Ravens right? We took a we took a coach and then we took two players. So, you know Justin: What I'm saying is what I'm saying is it's fine to take but but it wasn't like a back door kind of thing like oh just Give us castle and we'll give you Let us give you a second round pick instead of a first round pick, you know, because we're buddies. I don't think that's the way to play. Jake: I think I'll check. Justin: Got or the pats got what they could get for castle and a team that was willing to then sign it. Yeah, I mean, that was probably part of it. Jake: Yes? Justin: I don't know, it might have been part of it. Jake: No, I don't know, I wouldn't put anything bad. And then I guess the other sort of big news, although maybe not big, is the lack of news. I mean, if you look at the Miami Dolphins, they've kind of done nothing. Justin: What have they done? Jake: Um, they've resigned their guard. Uh, Joe. That's big. That's huge. They re but they're, but they, they resigned. They signed the center. Jake Grove from Oakland. Um, and that's it. They lost, they lost a, they lost Rolando Hill, the free safety. Ronaldo Hill. Vinnie Holiday's on the block. Al Johnson, Tad Perry, Derek Smith. Now these are big names. Vinnie Holiday's a pretty big name, defensive end. 11 seasons, the release. But they've been very quiet, which, you know, it almost makes you wonder if it was just a normal year without Parcels in the mix, I'd be like, they're just going to suck again. But clearly, they did OK last year. Justin: They're just building, maybe. I don't know. See Parcells is the kind of guy that will build for three years, but then he'll leave. Yeah, he's three years and then he's done. But by that third year, if you're not there, that's it. Jake: Well, and he's also he he also has now an art. They reached get structured his contract so he can actually leave at any time and take the money. So it's kind of strange because he had the chance after they change ownership to leave and take like $12 million. dollars. Justin: He should have just left. And then just signed. Jake: Just trying to think of some other big names here. I don't think that's. Justin: Can they get like Jabril Wilson or something? Jake: Oh, another big one, Lamont Jordan, leaving the Patriots. Huge. Where'd he go? Lamont Jordan went to Denver. Justin: He might be good there. Jake: Kind of interesting, yeah. Just trying to see. They released genius say, uh, let's see anybody else. I have a prediction for the jet. Oh and they signed fred taylor Yeah, whatever. Yeah, that's interesting. He's all about what how about what have a prediction? Okay, give me a prediction and then we'll wrap up the show here Justin: So this will be that thing that you always ask me. Do you have something to say? Yeah, okay, so you got a final moment, final something, final anything you want to say?
01 Jake: I do, I do. Okay. Justin: And without even knowing the final roster of the Jets on day one, and without even knowing who the quarterback's going to be, I'm going to go out on a limb here. Okay. I'm going to say Leon Washington is going to have a hell of a season, and he's going 2. be in the, you know, upper echelon of kind of these tweener type of players where he's going to play all sorts of positions, running back receiver lineup as a ball back or whatever, and they're going to throw the ball to him a lot. He's going to touch the ball 15 to 20 times. I guarantee it. They're gonna play this kind of trickery shit this year I have a feeling because that's what Schadenheimer wants to do and They're not doing anything on offense to show me that they're gonna be able to go down the field with any sort of ease So I'm looking for dinks and dunks and trickery and misconception and Leon, Washington's my man Looking for him to be Big times here. Jake: All right, well, that's not really a very big prediction at all, but it's huge. Justin: What do you mean? He touched the ball like five times a game this past year. I'm looking for him to break out. Break out! Break out, bitches! Jake: And with that, as always, remember to head to JetQM.com. Yeah, do some plugs.
