16 Jake: This is episode 43 of the Jet Kingdom podcast for Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009. Draft dodge. Well, welcome to the Jet Kingdom Podcast. As always, on this side of the digital draft aisle, it's Jake, and joining me on this fine April 22nd is my good buddy Justin. How are you doing, Justin? Justin: I'm doing all right in the digital war room this evening. Jake: The digital war room, yes. Yes, well it's a... It's a lot to get your head around. I must say the draft is the one thing that I get both. I want to pay as much attention as possible, but the ideas and the mocks and all that, they're so endless that it's hard to kind of like have an opinion. Justin: I am so not even close to as into it as you are. You're way more into the draft. We'll be right back. Um, then I am I can really care less about it. Um, yeah, I guess I ain't you're I guess I I have For all those out there that are fans Is an interesting character he only likes Oh, was my cough button on? Yeah, it goes from he only likes. Oh, man. I weaned on it. That sucks. That's amateurism right there. So what were you saying nasty about me as you clowned out? Oh, I did clown out. Well, you only like football. And by football, I mean NFL football, not even college football, just NFL football. You are an NFL football fan. That's right. I, on the other hand, like many many sports. I like more sports than most people even like. So I'm a big sports fan, like a lot of different sports, so I can't get as into the nitty gritty of the NFL off-season as you can, because I'm in the thick of the NBA playoffs. I am at the very start of the Major League Baseball season we have Champions League soccer going on so we got a lot of stuff going on here And and so I'm gonna I'm gonna lean on you today for for a lot of informed opinions on On the draft because I'm not gonna have a lot of informed opinions. I'm just gonna have Jake: opinions. Just uninformed opinions. Just opinions. Well as long as you don't keep hitting the mute button we might get some of those opinions out. Alright so
00 Jake: we're gonna talk about the draft in a bit but first our sponsor, no we don't have a sponsor, first we'll talk about something that came up in the since we've had time to I think it's been a couple weeks since our last podcast. We got the schedule. Yeah, we did. That was cool. 2009 schedule. So let's not do predictions because we have a whole show that I like to do right before the beginning of the season where we'll go game by game and we will predict. scores will probably not scores but will predict the whole season will go down but let's kinda talk about a little bit about what we see in schedule because there's some interesting things I'm certainly for the Jets I so we open up at at at Houston which is a second year in a row we've opened away I'm not not necessarily great thing you last year we open up again obviously at the dolphins Although we won the game To me and well not to me but most people take them in fours, right? So you take the season in fours fours and and they actually look at it in your quarters So in our first quarter we start at Houston. We then open New open the season at home against New England, which is again the fourth time I think in a row we've done that then we have Tennessee at home and then we have we go to Norrleans What do you think? Just... thoughts, opinions? Justin: Um... you know... Jake: Ugh... Justin: It's really... it's... it's tough to say, cause it's... I mean, the draft hasn't even happened yet. I... I will say one thing. I'm sick of opening our season against the Pats at home. I'm sick of this shit. This is, I think, three seasons in a row. Jake: Yeah, I think it's three or four seasons. But you know what? I like it because it's an exciting game. Like, it would be nice if we actually won a couple of them. But it's an exciting game. They're a huge rival of ours. Probably not as much this year as last year because the whole man genie thing is gone. But, you know, again, to get the fan base there, to see the big game, I think that's good. And then the Tennessee game, again, another. That's two back to back home games. Good games. Justin: Those are tough games, though. I mean, that's. You got to remember those are really tough games. I take a, Tennessee's a physical team, you know? Jake: I think it's funny and actually I'm looking back last year, just yeah, do you know we played, last year we played at New England and then at Tennessee, they should've played. Justin: Yeah, and we won both of those games. Jake: So yeah, so what's that? It's all good. I think those are two great games. And then, you know, at Norlene's, tough to play in the dome. I don't know if they're... Justin: I don't know, they're a tough team to predict because they can be hit or miss. You get them on the right day and you can beat them because they just shut down. They have these awful games sometimes. Jake: I think out of that one we gotta go two and two. We gotta go.
00 Jake: Three and one out of that that's kind of tough then our second we go at Miami So we go from at we go at Miami home against Buffalo at Oakland home against Miami So like to Miami's which again You know two years ago, we would have laughed but since they beat us last year made the playoffs We didn't we can't take that for granted I will predict one thing right now put it on the books We'll play Miami twice, but we'll only see Chad once. We got a Monday night game, first Monday night game against Miami since, I think, two, three years ago. We played them on Monday night against Christmas night. That should be a fun one. That should be fun. That'll be good. I'll be down there. Are you going to go down there for that? Yeah, I'm going to give it my shot. And we have Buffalo at home. OK, then. And here's the funny thing. At Oakland, on week seven, we played them at Oakland week seven last year. That's crazy. That's twice in the same year. So. Justin: It always feels like we go to Oakland. It just always feels that way. And I can say I do. And why do we always end up playing them? Jake: Yeah, I don't know. It's our curse. I mean, we play them. Justin: We're not playing anyone else from their division at all. Jake: But we should have beat them last year. Anyway, I say we go three. Well, I think we'll beat them this year, to be honest. We need a three and one out of that one, too. I think we can lose one of the Miamis, but we got to beat Buffalo, you know, and TO and all that at home. Then we have a bye week. Okay, you know, middle season bye week. Justin: I like mid-season bye weeks. I like them in the middle. That's all. Jake: Well, it also gives us the second run then is you know a shorter run so then we have Jacksonville at home That's so coming off a buy but having you know at home team. That's good. That's gonna be that's gonna be a Justin: big time Jake: Smash mouth game defense. Well, that's a game that I want our defense. That's the game. That's gonna be a crazy crazy Justin: Someone's gonna get hurt in that game Jake: Then we go at New England. Justin: Yep, tough. Jake: Carolina at home. Tough. Justin: At Buffalo. In Toronto, mind you. Jake: In Toronto on a Thursday night. So that's our second prime time game, which is kind of fun. Justin: So we're playing two division rivals in prime. Prime. prime time on the road Jake: Those are that the toughs. That's a tough stretch. I think I think that Jackson the New England Carolina Buffalo He's a tough scratch probably the toughest of the Justin: Yeah, that's a tough one. Those are four tough games, especially that short week Jake: And then ending it up. It's not gonna be any cakewalk. We go at Tampa Bay, which could be hit or miss there Justin: Yeah, hit or miss new coach no quarterback Jake: Atlanta, okay, good team last year, but was it a street or not? Justin: Sophomore Jinx, quarterback. Jake: At least he said home. At Indy, tough place to play. Justin: Oh, it's tough, but you know what? You never know with Indy if they even need, will need that game. You never know. Jake: That is true. They could be wrestling players. And then, Cincy at home to close down the Meadowlands.
00 Justin: Now, that's the thing. That game right there against Cincinnati, those, the bungles. The bungles. The Jets need that game. That's a perfect opponent to play. Yeah, I want to put that out there now because they suck perennially Jake: And again closing down the last game ever to be played pretty cool in the middle. That's very cool Justin: We were talking about it. I thought not a chance That they would get that last game in the right way Jake: I think you called that both the the the Giants would have both the home opener and the home clothes. I thought they'd get both Yeah, it's a little much something. They're gonna do that well, you know That's a tough one again. We'll have to wait for the draft wait for training camp. We see a quarterback situation It's too early to make predictions You know, but that does not look like an easy schedule. I think it's the seventh hardest schedule in the league. Wow. The Dolphins got the hardest strength of schedule. Cool. I think the Dolphins are in for it for a letdown this year, but in a whole bunch of ways. But what do you think about any of these games? Justin: Potentially being flexed. Jake: Yeah, so flexing starts after what, week 10? Justin: I don't know, you're the one that knows these things. Jake: Yeah, um, you know, it's interesting this year... Justin: You know, maybe that Patriots game, the second Pats game in November. Could be. You know, look at some of these games, even the Colts game, if it's going to mean something. Yeah, you know that's that's Manning again. It's so hard to tell because you know Jake: Two teams that are nine in whatever playing each other you could see a flex But generally they like really big rivalries to flex and playoff important games Yeah, we don't importance. So Buffalo New England. Okay, there's big rivalries New England They're rivalry games, but we don't have rivalries with Jacksonville or Carolina or Tampa Bay or Atlanta All of them none of them and again they were you know I I can't see any of those but again We'll see later interesting this year. They actually put the times of the games that could be flexed. I remember in prior years I was like, yeah They used to be TBD TBD TBD now they're actually telling the games the other interesting thing is that the The Jewish crowd in New York one over and and I think that was at the Titans game. Yeah They have the Titans game moved from four to one, which is good I actually like a one o'clock game a little bit better than four o'clock game I'd like to be able to come back and see the end of the four and then the sevens. Justin: Yeah, the four o'clock game ruins the day because you can't see any of the early game and you miss the beginning of the late game driving around. It kind of sucks. Jake: Yeah, no, I like the one o'clock. I mean, the Monday night, what a cool thing. And then to have that Thursday night, that might be a road trip right there. I'm saying. It's only an eight hour drive out. The only problem is it's in December 3rd and driving from here to... Yeah, but it's indoors. It's indoors.
00 Jake: Yeah, but it's no, but it's from here to there driving that, you know... Justin: Yeah, you know, it's some snow on the way. Actually, you know what? December... You know, December's the new November. Jake: And with that, let's go and talk about the draft because the draft is upon us. It is for all those not paying any attention. I'm not. I gotta be honest. Okay, so the draft is Saturday and Sunday this year. It's starting at 4 p.m. It's same as last year in that they are 10 minute first quarter. Obviously the Jets have a bunch of picks. Let me just read them off for those again who are, I assume if you listen to a Jet podcast you're pretty much super fan, but just in case you're just kind of casual fan, the Jets have six picks. Justin: I can imagine that you're not like a huge Jet fan and you're just listening to the show for no reason. I mean I can imagine that you'd be related maybe. Jake: You you would be one of our significant others or daughters so Six picks and we have first round pick 17 second round pick 52 Third round pick 76 fourth round 115 of the third and fourth rounds are from the Saints and Redskins I think that's for Vilma and for Kendall. Yep. And then round six, we pick a 20. And round seven, we pick at 193 and 228. So those are the things. So not a lot. I mean, we were talking about these four about how you know. Justin: There's definitely some things I'm worried about. Jake: Okay, well, here's what I want to do. First of all, I want to hear your top three needs. And then, then I'm going to go over because I'm again, a little bit more into this than you are, I'm going to kind of say what I think is going to happen. So I'm going to give my top three picks and what's going to happen my air quoting here mock draft for top three. And then we'll just kind of go from there and discuss. Justin: Well let me tell you something. Alrighty, before I give you any of my prime information. Yeah. Because I'm the one with the information. I'm a little upset by the fact that we only have like six picks. And the Patriots have like 11. And they have four in the top 58. Yes they do. Pretty good. So that worries me. The Finns have nine, the Bills have nine. They're all stockpiled with picks. We have six. I don't like that. I like having a lot of picks. Because you never know what you're going to get. Jake: I will say hold on one second I was reading someone was doing a retrospective on the 2000 draft where we had four picks four first round picks Chad Pennington Sean Ellis Anthony Bect and John Abraham and John Abraham so how'd those four work out for us there buddy? Pretty well I think
04 Jake: okay I don't think so but anyway keep going I mean those are no franchise players Justin: Well, they're all still in the league. They're all still starting on teams. That's great. Well, they are. And John Abraham turned into Nick Mangold who was starting on our team. So that's pretty good. And Ellis still starts for us. So I wouldn't bash that. Jake: Oh, I do like the Nick Mangold. Good point. Alright, go ahead. So talk about your three draft thoughts. Justin: So my thoughts are this. In free agency the Jets You know certainly went out made a splash and did a lot of things on defense. They pretty much signed Three starters on defense right they signed Shepherd Leonard and the big one Bart Scott On offense, I don't even think, I can't recall them doing anything, except losing Lavernius Coles. So my gut tells me they're drafting offense. Uh, alright, I have to think that they're drafting offense. Um... With that said, I don't like drafting receivers... at all. But I mean, I don't like drafting them early because it generally takes two to three seasons to get anything out of them. And I like the idea of picking a guy in the first round that can play immediately. And most of the time those guys are running backs. So I'm trending towards jets picking a running back. Who it's going to be, I have no idea. I don't know if they're going to trade or maybe down, up, depending on where guys are. I know there's guys, wells from Ohio State might be in that range. inhale. So that's my thought. I think that they're going to pick offense. I think the line is set. So I think in the first round they're going to go for running back and then after that maybe a receiver. Because I could deal with that in the second or third rounds. Jake: So we'll try to answer the question that I asked. I did. What are the top three needs? Give me three positions at our needs. Justin: Positions specifically? Yes please. Wide receiver. and by wide receiver quarterback and Maybe a Jake: Defensive end that can rush the quarterback. It's interesting interesting that you picked quarterback because I think that's So you think that's a draftable need or just a need like just a need in general Justin: Because I don't think we have it figured out like if you look at the team, you know who the starting Offensive lines gonna be you know who the starting running backs gonna be You know who the starting full backs gonna be you can pretty much figure who the starting line receivers are gonna be You don't know who the starting quarterback's gonna be on defense. You can name every starter
00 Jake: So I mean, I don't believe that we have the starting quarterback on our roster Justin: For this season, yeah, I think so. Jake: Yeah, I mean, here's the thing. There's a lot of talk. I first want to throw it out there. This is a weak quarterback draft. It's just a weak draft. Anybody, there's, there is a time between the end of the season and the beginning of the draft that's like the hype machine. Because at the end of the season, you talk about these players and they're like, oh, it's this player. He's good. He's good. But by the time you go through three months of no football, and all of a sudden these players who like and their average. They've done nothing else that maybe run some sprints and all of a sudden they go from being average just whatever college players to the most important player ever to play the game ever and who will become the next greatest thing and there's nothing that happens. They don't play any games. They don't do anything between that period. I don't know what Super Bowls did they win in the last three months to go from just average players to the best player on the Justin: planet. It's okay. We're explicit. Go on. Yeah, I know you know they always talk about the 99 Draft right the 99 draft of In the NFL obviously that had You know the top three picks were quarterbacks The Browns picked first it was Tim couch Yeah, that turned out real well now the second pick Who they actually the fans of this team booed at the time it was Donovan McNabb that turned out well for the Eagles Yes, the third pick for Cincinnati. They picked Akili Smith That didn't work out well at all Then if you jump down to the 11th pick Dante Culpepper You can argue that worked out for the Vikings for like three seasons, but he fizzled. And number 12, Cade McNown. So that's just an example of five quarterbacks picked in the top 12 and only one of them even did anything. Jake: Right, and if you look at this draft, they're all juniors, which again, the history of the draft says that juniors don't come out and start well, generally don't do well in the NFL by coming out and juniors. Most of the quarterbacks, the big ones, stayed in college. So you have Stafford, Sanchez, and Freeman. Stafford's going to the Lions. It looks like they're actually locking the deal down now. That's all the rumor mill right before we started this podcast. cast. Sanchez looks could go anywhere, but we're at 17. He would most likely go before. Justin: Lots of talk should we go up and get him, trade everything away, go. He could just drop. I mean, look what happened to guys like Aaron Rodgers. Jake: I totally agree. Guys can drop right out of the top 10, into the top 15. Easily, easily. I do not think we should jump up and get that guy. And then everybody's like, Josh Freeman, Josh Freeman, a lot of the picks. A lot more to have us picking Josh Freeman. And again, a guy who needs work by everybody's measure, well, we have three guys who maybe need work on our roster. I don't need the fourth guy. Why don't we need four guys on our young guys who've
00 Jake: never played that need work? Let's focus on the three. I honestly think probably the big surprise, here's what I think for the top picks. So I think we need wide receiver, running back, tight end. Those are my big three. Why a tight end? I think by trading like Chris breaker we lose we need it we'd need a blocking tight end. We don't have that what We just used the first round pick on dusting color last year. Yeah. Well, we jumped up to get him it by 32 or whatever Justin: Yeah, but dude, that's it. He's our tight end. Yeah, he's one tight end. We need another Jake: It's my third position third position one run need But these are not a need but here's what I think we're gonna do I think with the 17 picks Running back. I look there's there's a couple out there on the boards the one that um This what's this? It's Maroney. I can't think of his name Maroney No, sorry. No Sean Marone or Reno. No, Sean, Marino. Sorry having problems and there's Chris Wells I have two of them the one that I liked better was Chris Wells. I like he's a 4-4 guy 6-1 yeah, Beanie 235. He's got a nickname Beanie he's got a nickname. He missed 30. He missed three games, but still put up over 1200 yards They say his problems with maybe focus doesn't hit the hole every single time whatever When they compared him to someone, they compared him to Larry Johnson. When you compare anybody to Larry Johnson, you think that's a good thing. I actually think that they're going to go for Chris Wells. That's my pick. Although, we'll talk about whether they go for best available or if they actually go for position, you go for need, or best available. Justin: You know, it's interesting that we both have them picking a running back. Because they have two that by all accounts people a lot of fans including myself believe that one of those running backs is completely underused and that's Leon but he's not a running back. I mean we have Thomas Jones who did pretty decent last year but I think he's done. I thought he was a bum before last season and I had to eat my words. I'm gonna go out there and say he's not gonna even close to it this season. Jake: You're gonna change your mind again. Well the problem is he's looking for a contract. Fucking... He's barely gonna get a million bucks next year. His contract gives him $900,000. He's looking for a new contract. He's clearly on the wrong side, 30 to get a new contract. I think he's a guy, and this is what I think is going to happen. I think we trade our – we go to the bottom of the first and we trade away Jones. A player. Yeah. Plus our third round and we move up to pick in the first round or you know first round kind like we did last year This is not very great. I think we pick up a wide receiver. The one that I have targeted
02 Jake: Is Percy Harvin? Who's 510 511 hundred 95 pounds don't want them 511. I don't want him He you know he plays like here's a here's a player to compare to Steve Smith Justin: Yeah, fine. Great. Yeah, okay fine. I'll take it. I don't want him. I don't want 511. I want a 6 foot 4 Jake: fucking monster. Yeah, so you probably want someone like Darius Haywood Bay, which is sort of the the one that most people have us picking. Great. That's why I was. There's also another guy in the second round that might come up like, or the third round, Ramses Borden, who's a wide receiver from Cal. I like receivers from out there Derek Williams wide receiver Penn State That's a good second round pick. So there's some there's some guys out there in a second. We'll see those are my picks Again, that's what that's my favorite part of the draft That's why I will watch the whole thing is because it's not just about the picks. It is like a chess match watching all the people and the trades and the trades up and the trades back and you know the the bell and seeing all the videos so I always love this time of year plus it's officially the the the the ringing of the first sort of thing of football it becomes everything becomes about football again which for us it doesn't for us to only follow one for it. It certainly does. Justin: It's always all about football. When is it not always football? Jake: Exactly. Well there's double moments. And this is a great moment. I love the NFL Draft. I'm extremely excited. Four o'clock Saturday. Justin: Do you know how much of the draft I'm going to watch? Jake: Probably zero. Justin: Zero. Jake: You have to watch any? I mean the first round? Justin: Why do I need to watch the first round? Jake: Because that's the exciting round. Justin: No. That's like the slowest round. I don't need to sit there and watch it. Jake: It's the slowest round, but it's the most exciting round because people are taking the big player. Justin: Mel Kuyper is everywhere and I don't need that. Jake: Alright, well then you can watch it on the NFL now. Oh right, you can't. Justin: I can't because of my douchebag cable company. Jake: Yeah, so with another little announcement and we'll head on off the draft for a second is you know Jet Kingdom is on Twitter now us and the rest of the millions of trillions people Justin: I know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do this right now. I'm gonna do this right now. I'm gonna go tweet about how My cable company doesn't give me the NFL Network Yeah, and maybe they'll be monitoring it and maybe they'll actually come around and give it to me. Jake: I don't think so. But anyway, if you want to follow Jet Kingdom, we're at Twitter.com slash Jet Kingdom. We're packing up the followers. We're trying to get some interaction. And we actually had a fan calling for some information. or want us to cover something which is the Hank. big boy Hank wanted us to talk about the move to Cortland this year. So training camp for this year has always been out in...
04 Jake: Oh, pulling a blank. Justin: Hofstra. Jake: Hofstra, sorry. Always been on a Hofstra. I usually go every year for at least one of the days. This year they talked about, obviously, they built this big thing in Forum Park. It's a beautiful new facility. It's state of the art. I think Rex Ryan said, listen, state of the art is great, but I don't want them with their parents and their kids and their wives and staying in mansions. I want them in the dorms. He's moving them to SUNY Cortland. But what I think is a nice twist is they're going to do three camps. They're gonna do... camp up there, most of the training camp, which will be good, you know, get some people up there, jets, whatever. They're also going to do time out at Hofstra. They're going to have a family night out there, they're going to do a practice out there, so that kind of gets people out there to be able to go, be more close. And then they're actually going to do training camp down at Forum Park too. So people are in Jersey, they can go visit them there, and so I think, I actually think It's a great. It's a big event that people do like to go. I know the people who probably go, and I have a friend who goes every single, goes for like two weeks straight, she probably is not excited about it because she'd have to jump around. For the fans, it counts best of both worlds. For the casual, semi-casual fans, I can't even, wait, sorry, there are no semi-casual fans who go to training camp. for the mostly hardcore but are not going to take off two weeks and sit. and watch the training camp. I think it's a great thing, right? I can go for a couple days, watch them here, and if I really want to, I can go down to Forum Park. I don't think I'm going to know the SUNY Cortland, but could do. I know you don't go to training camp because you're such a huge social friend. Justin: I've gone three years, I've gone... It's kind of cool. It's fun to watch them practice. I went one year and it was kind of memorable. They had the You know they have the kid kid zone out there, and they had the 40 set up So I wanted to run the 40 to see how fast I could run the 40 yep, and I was running it And I fell at about 34 Like flat on my face oh scraped up my knee it sucked it was so embarrassing My knee was all scraped up That was like bleeding on my shorts and I was mad Yeah, that's embarrassing. I will say that my Jake: Three and a half year old or will be four year old daughter loves Jess Granny camp loves to go. She thinks it's a blast She's actually already talking about it. So I'm glad that we'll have a chance to keep going and you know what that's awesome. You're Justin: You're locking her in at the training camp level, which means that you're starting at the ground, the foundation up, which means that she will be a Jets fan as we know you have a split household. Jake: Yes, a split household, a dolphin fan wife, and uh, so we're trying heavily to rely. I will say a funny side story
03 Jake: because maybe this is the kind of common interest or human interest stuff. Uh, the daughter was visiting with a friend and the friend, uh, jokingly. I tried to convince them that they should be Boston fans, like the Red Sox and like the Patriots. And my daughter literally threw a fit and started screaming, no, no, I'm a chess fan. J-E-T-S, chess, chess, chess, chess, chess. She kept doing the chant over and over and over again. Again, three and a half can't really do the chant, but she can do it as well as she can. And I tell you nothing, nothing more proud of my life to know that she fought like a Wolverine, not to even let them joke with her about becoming any other type of fan. That's right. It's all good news. Good girl. All right. Well, that'll wrap up yet another podcast, a 43rd episode. We're getting up there. I can't wait for 50. Justin: 43. Who wears 43? Anybody? Jake: I don't know. Oh, that's other small news of Vernon Gholston switched from 56 to 50. Yeah, that's Mentioned I guess Barton left. So yeah, take 50. Yeah, he can take 50. So that's it We will coming up. We'll give you a little upcoming schedule. We'll definitely do a post draft You know, go over the picks and what we think happened.
