13 Jake: The Jet Kingdom podcast episode number 46 on Monday August 3rd 2009. ...and... ...Rex Camp. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, as always, on this side of the digital aisle on this side of the very hot summer sweaty digital aisle. It's Jake and joining me across from the digital aisle in a what looks like a cooler room than I'm in is my good. Justin: Nice and cool. A.C. in the summertime. My buddy Justin. Justin, how are you doing? I'm doing just fine. Do you know how gross a sweaty, slimy, digital aisle sounds? That sounds disgusting. Jake: You know what? Our people are waiting for the gross, disgusting digital aisle. We had a couple of tweets asking to get the podcast back going. It seemed to coincide with some good news because as it is started, the Jets are in training camp and Suni Cortland. Suni Cortland, please. Suni, sorry. Justin: I know for you Suni Suni people. I went to a Suni. My sister happens to be an alumnus of, or an alumni of... SUNY Cortland. I've been there a couple times. I've been to the facility. It's beautiful. It's brand new. So I'm sure they're making good use of it. There are two fields actually back to back. I don't know if you have seen any video or photos of it. Have you? Jake: I have not. I've seen tons of pictures, of course, but it just looks like, you know, players on a field and I've been and I've been following along with a lot of the uh, A lot of the news of course, there's been a lot of tweeting. I'd say this is probably the second year there's been a big tweet thing for the camp. There's actually a search term Jets camp that you can follow, see lots of tweeting from Jets Insider and from Jet Nation and from some of the correspondents out there. I've seen obviously... you Kerry Rhodes has been tweeting, so it's fun because it's kind of like instant access to what's going on in the camp, even though they're not in Hofstra this year. But let's kick it off. Let's talk about some stuff that's going on and what we want to do. So let's talk about, first of all, before camp started, let's talk about three things or questions going into camp. Why don't you rattle off Why don't we talk about what we'll go back and forth. So one question going into camp that you kind of want to see play itself out. Justin: Well, since you made me go first, I'll go with the obvious.
02 Justin: I have three things written down because we did actually talk about this or instant message about this earlier. And I had three things. So I'll go with the quarterback situation and what's going to happen right now. I mean, they're not saying either way, right? Which way they're leaning, but I think by the end of... I don't know how it's gonna play out. Earlier on, way back when, before the draft happened, and then I think as the draft happened, I was sticking to the... I thought Kellen Clemens was going to start the season. as the starting quarterback. I wonder if that will play itself out or if the kid, Sanchez, will come in and take the city by storm and start from day one just like the Ravens did last year and they did pretty well. So that's my one question or question numero uno. I think it's a big question for a lot of people. Jake: Yeah, I mean I think the thing that I'm It's certainly the most obvious question so good for hitting the obvious one out of the park obvious the the the the The news out of the park so far or the stuff that's coming out of just training camp is basically saying That's very it's been a bit of a wash You know while Kellen looks a little bit more in control when he's in the pocket, sort of knows the system more, you know, fourth year in the system, he's also throwing a lot of Mark Sanchez, so he's kind of throwing these just obvious picks. Mark Sanchez on the other hand looking a little lost or a little bit less in control but sort of a little bit not doing this sort of obvious mistake. So. You know it's back and forth. I think the thing that everybody agrees almost everybody I guess except for the Kellen Clemmons fanboys is that Is that for the only way for Kellen Clemens to win this job is that he has to absolutely? Beat the shit out of Marc Sanchez in terms of performance because everybody wants Marc Sanchez to start So the only way the Kellen Clemens I mean Two things have to happen. Mark Sanchez has to fall in his face, meaning go into a preseason game and just throw like pick, pick, pick, like, or, you know, just not see stuff or just barely do any completions, that type of thing. And then Killen Clemens has to really, really play well. I don't think either one of those two things are going to happen. The franchise wants Mark Sanchez to happen. They want him to play. They've already said we're going to ground and pound. I mean Rex Ryan is saying ground and pound. This is going to be a game about inches, not about yards. And they're going to give Thomas Jones his 300 carries. They're going to give Leanne Washington a lot. And they're going to throw anybody they can back there to pick up the yards. And they're going to hope the defense keeps the games low. So. . Again, I don't think that it is probably the biggest question. My question, if we're going to flip, is maybe it's not the one that all the fans are thinking,
04 Jake: but it's the one that kind of pops in my head is, is Bart Scott for real? Is this guy as good as the guys he's played next to? You could probably broaden that question and say, is this defense for real? I'll broaden it. Thank you. Is this defense for real? Are these people really as good as we think they are? Or they or that we believe in right Rex Ryan the great, you know coordinator he's done such amazing job with You know the the Ravens you bring our bark Scott you bring Jim Leonard we get little shepherd You know, we have David Harris we have Developed Rell Reavis there, you know, it's all these things Chris Jenkins in the middle It's all these things that lead up to us going, this is going to be an amazing defense. But that doesn't happen. You just can't throw a bunch of people together and get that kind of defense. I think it could happen in a year or two. The question is, is it going to happen this year? And I think the expectation level is, all you need is the parts and then they will make the machine. My question is, is it for real? Is this really going to happen like we all I a a.. and a hope Justin: and dream? So what do you think about that? Wow did you did you get that question out? Where's the question? What's the question? The question was why are you such a schmuck? Let me answer that. You know I did write down in my little sticky top defense in league on paper. So you kind of read my mind there. On paper, it looks pretty damn good, doesn't it? With Jenkins in the middle and Thomas outside and, you know, pace, although suspended for four games, which we'll get to is is still a pretty good player from last year's free agent crop. Gholston first round pick last year. We'll see what he can do. Revus and and Shepard can do the things that Ryan wants them to do. They can play man You know, Revus can man up and he's gonna have to play against Moss twice a year and Owens twice a year And he's gonna be on them four games man up. That's it No questions asked and I think he's up for that task. He's pretty damn good. What a good what a good choice He's a really good corner and he could tackle Safety's look pretty good on paper. Rhodes, although, uh, regressed a little last year, I think he's gonna be back into more of an attacking style this year, and he's gonna put up four or five sacks again like he did two years ago. And Leonard, I think, will surprise. I think he's gonna be one of the keys to the defense. He's just gonna be that guy that's kinda just there. Uh... Not a... big name, not, you know, not not the flashiest of players, but I think that's what he's there to do. Just protect, you know, the deep ball. We haven't had a good cover safety in a while, and I think he's going to be that. So as for the defense, I am of the opinion that yeah, they're going to be.
03 Justin: one of the top defenses in the league. Top five, top one, top ten, what do you think? I think after the first three games, or four games, they'll be the best defense in the league. Oh, man. If nobody gets hurt, if nobody gets here, two caveats or one caveat, if nobody gets hurt after the first quarter of the season. They might, they'll be like, you know, they might be in the middle of the pack at that point, but from that point on, they're going to be the best defense in the league. Obviously, I'll put that out there on this very podcast. Jake: I don't know if that's much of a prediction. You're basically saying if no one gets hurt after the first four games, even though they won't be the best of those first games, they'll be best going forward. So someone that's a real prediction. Okay, someone after said throw away the first four games of five games on no, no, no, I'm telling you what's gonna happen Justin: I'm telling you what's gonna happen. They're gonna take four games to like coagulate gel and then After that, it's just gonna be like a fucking monster They're they're not going to be able to be stopped pace is gonna come back. It's gonna be A beautiful thing. Jake: Alright, well I'd like to prediction. So give me one since I took a question and you had the second question which was basically my question. Give me your third question then going into training camp that you want to have answered. Justin: Well I kind of want to know who the third wide receiver is going to be. the second wide receiver. So, are you sure about the first? I'm pretty sure Kachri, I'm pretty sure Kachri is going to be the number one. And I'm pretty sure, hmm, well, I don't know. Who's number two, who's number four? And of those, who's going to see the ball the most? or who's gonna get the second most looks because I'm pretty sure Kautry is gonna get the first. Jake: Yeah, I think we got kind of, you probably got two, I think is Dustin Keller. I think that's your number two. receiver almost was out of doubt. Justin: That's not a wide receiver. and he's a tight end. Jake: I think in terms of production, he's gonna be the guy getting the ball. all. He certainly got more. Justin: So it's going to be like a Gates situation in San Diego where they only have one wide receiver for all those years? Jake: Yeah, I mean if you think about sort of a couple things. One he's got great hands, he can move the ball, he's not a great blocking tight end so you're going to want to put him in motion, you want to do a lot of things with him. And then if you're a rookie quarterback, I mean who's your best friend? Yeah, your best friend's probably a really great receiver but your other best friend Thank you. Is is your check off is your guy who's like you can go to on your on a route and go oh there's the tight end Let me throw it to him. So I'm I think he will probably be the he will probably be huge I think there's a lot of raw talent in there
02 Jake: But again, you know as you like to point out a lot in during the draft, you know Three years to make a receiver good. So there's a lot of raw talent, but are any of them Ready to step up and be the number two three guy So the question is whether someone can, you know, who's going to step up as that guy? Justin: Remember it is Stucky's third year. So this would be the year that I would expect him to step up. Jake: Didn't he sit out the first year? Wasn't he hurt the first year? Justin: Well that's the thing. That's why it takes receivers that long. They do get hurt a lot. in their first season or two. Remember Santana Moss, it happened to him. It happens to a lot of guys. Jake: Brad Smith, I think, is like a do or die situation. This is the year that he that shows that he's got a position on the team or he's going to be, you know, let go, you know, be. Well, he's a good special teams player. Very good. Always impresses me again, that Miami game, just watching him go down and tackle left and right. I was like, I can't believe that. sort of, you know, a lot of guys can be good in a special teams. Um, I don't know. Again, lots of, lots of raw talent. Are they, are they all going to sum up? I think, I think what Rex Ryan is saying and what the fans are seeing is it doesn't matter, it doesn't really matter who's out there. They're not going to, they're not going to throw the ball a lot. I mean, name the wide receivers on the Baltimore last year. Justin: Mark Clayton and Desmond Mason. Desmond Mason is almost a Hall of Fame, well he's got a lot, he's got the numbers to almost be a Hall of Fame wide receiver. Jake: Exactly, these are not guys in the TO, Randy Moss, you know. They're not in that upper echelon, they're probably not top 10 receivers, they're probably not top 20 receivers. in terms of, you know, production name value, like when you would consider like these number one guys. So, so again, I think Ryan has seen he's seen the blueprint. The question is, do we have the parts to make that blueprint? Justin: I at this point, that's the offensive line that makes that go. It does. Jake: But you know, do we have the running attack to be able to do that? Do we have the ability to consistently do the defense to keep those those scores low enough so a running game can dominate? You know, Mark Sanchez throwing the ball 35 times a game. We're in trouble. Nope, lost. Yeah. Justin: I can tell you by looking at the box score that that's a loss. Jake: So again, I think it's too early to call. I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful, but I'm a little bit worried that it's a lot of new parts. I mean, it's all new. The only thing that's sort of solid is that offensive line, maybe defensive line, but with less sort of pieces in there. So I think those are probably the those are probably the number three questions I mean, you know on on the fans mind going to the tread screen camp and preseason will will probably learn a lot But you know the rubber is gonna hit the road when we and they head into the actual games and the first games of season So speaking of which which is a nice segue
01 Jake: Nice segue. Yeah one Getting better at this Calvin pace are big pickup from a year ago is out for the first four games for substance abuse. I think it's dietary supplement type stuff. Which is a loss because he was a playmaker last year. There were some times when he actually did things. Which I think probably in the minds of one Vernon Gholston is a godsend. Because godsend. It's a good opportunity. It's a huge opportunity. So Gholston will start. Which. You know, again, I think throwing bust around on a guy who's only played one year is really, really rough. But if anybody was going to was going to earn a bust, you know, in that draft class, he's going to get it. So, you know, I get eleven tackles last year. Justin: I'll point out Brian Thomas, the other outside linebacker who's been starting for the Jets for the last four or five seasons. was also a number one pick who didn't even play till his fourth year. Like the guy sucked, he never played and now he's pretty productive. So sometimes it takes these guys who played like defensive and in college who have to move to a different position and play in the bigger better league. takes him a couple years. So, you know, although we want him to come along faster as a number six overall pick, hopefully he's coached up to the point where he can make something happen in year two and, you know, hopefully not be a bust and, you know, be like Brian Thomas where he's been productive over time. Jake: Yeah, I'm sorry, but I'm not waiting for productive. A lot of guys can be productive. You don't have to pick on the sixth pick in the draft. Like, that's not what you pick. You're like, hey, let's go pick. Let's go pick millions and millions of dollars this guy guarantees so he can be productive. No, we want him to dominate on the field if you're going to pick him that high. I think he's got everything in his favor going for him. He's got a new coach. He changed his number. He's got a great number. Is he wearing? I think he's 50 now. He's 50. He went from a brand new defensive coach, a brand new defensive minded head coach. He's got the first four games guaranteed start. So in some ways he doesn't even have to win the position. But it seems like everything that seems to be said about Vernon Gholston is that It's his head that's not in it, his body. I mean, he's built like a frickin' brick shit house. He's this huge guy with all the talents in the world. If I had one tenth the physical talent he had, but he just doesn't have the mental kind of, not even, it's not smart. It's kind of like want to play the game. He takes plays off. He's not kind of. fully involved in gauge. I know, but it's, it's what's, what's people's being saying. And some of it, you know, it's kind of like Chad's arm, which is kind of a throwback. It's kind of like Chad's arm. You know, part of it is just the hype around Chad and Chad's arm. There is some reality there where there's smoke, there's fire. So while Chad didn't
03 Jake: have a, you know, a noodle arm, he did have, he didn't have the strongest arm. And then, but once someone knows, I resent that he had a rifle arm. Yeah, especially when he was throwing picks, four picks in the post. Justin: Is he projected to start for the Dolphins this season? Jake: He is, he is. Chad is protected to start. So that's sort of the Golden Pace thing. Interesting I think Pace is going to start with the starters during the preseason, which is a little strange. change. But, you know, we'll see. As training camp goes on, you know, we'll see what actually happens. Smeagolish training camp all over the place. They're playing up in SUNY, Portland, but they're actually coming back to Hofstra for next week for the family night, which I think you and I might be at, which will be kind of fun. one. I love going to glad that they somehow worked away to come back. You know, there'll be lots of Jets fans because that'll be there like one or two opportunities to go if they're not traveling way up there. I agree with Rex Ryan's theory. I agree with getting them out, changing the pace, changing the layout, changing, you know, the way that it's good. Justin: I like it. I like the. It's like a whole new regime change. I mean, that's what happens. So it doesn't let people fall into similar patterns or habits, either good nor bad, I mean, at the old place. So start fresh, start new, and that's that. Jake: So the only other kind of thing I want to cover, because we have covered this stuff in the past before. We're like a news outlet. We are like a news outlet. Dee dee dee dee dee dee straight off Jet Kingdom podcast. It's sort of the season ticket situation. And I'm not even talking 2010 and PSLs, although that's kind of related. We're talking 2009. If you've been on the internets, the series of tubes, anywhere basically that they have any kind of talk about any type of. of jets, you'll notice a lot of ads, AdSense ads to Google for selling jets season tickets. I personally have been a season ticket holder for I think four or five years now. I've never seen ads trying to sell tickets. And the reality is, because I talked to more and more season ticket holders that a lot of people are bailing on this season. They see it as a lame duck season. They see it as the last season in the in the Meadowlands. So you know, they're either they're not excited about going into the 2010 season into the new stadium. And they also don't see it as you know, a season where anything's gonna happen because it's rookie quarterback rookie head coach. So, there is a huge bail on— on season tickets. So that's why our new sponsor, the New York Jets, wants you to go, no, I'm just kidding. There's really just a ton of tickets. You can go pick up season tickets for this season almost anywhere in the stadium
00 Jake: because a lot of season ticket holders... are just bailing. I think that's interesting and what even makes it more interesting is that the sale of the PSLs, which as you know, because we talked about it, it's been a seniority basis, and they're basically going from the oldest season to take it holders to the newest, and they're coming to you and saying, okay, here's what we have available. PSLs are not starting May first. I personally... have been told originally back in May, I was told it was coming in end of June, early July. Then in June, I was told it was coming July and August. In July, I was told that it was coming in August. In fact, I was given a date, August 17th. And then today, I was told September at the earliest. Now here's the reason. The reason is they have put all these PSL salespeople, which they have a ton of like 10 or so, to selling the season tickets. It's Obviously, they don't want to have a blackout. Obviously, you got to get those season tickets out there for 2009 before they can even worry about the PSLs for 2010. So just a really interesting situation. It's the triple whammy, right? You've got a really bad economy. You've got people losing their jobs. You know, two, three thousand dollars is not... It's not a small amount when you're worried about losing your job or all the costs are going up. And then you have this, you know, it's like the perfect storm. Then you have the next season coming up. You have the lame duck status of the kind of season in the game. Justin: I don't buy that though. Jake: I don't buy that. I buy it if like you think that this is, so if you're a season ticker, you're not going into next year. Why take up the season? Sit at home and watch the rookie court work. Justin: Oh, well, if you're not going to go for the 2010 season, like if you don't care about the new stadium, then yeah, I wouldn't go for this. Jake: Right, but that's a lot of people. And then a lot of people are bailing because they don't have the money, so you kind of got a perfect storage situation. Well, let me ask you this. Justin: You have season tickets. Are you going to look to get better seats? Jake: Yeah, I mean my philosophy has always been that while I don't like PSLs, meaning I don't like to spend money to do something that I've already done that I didn't have to spend money to do, I understand them. I understand that it's a way of raising money, it's a way of getting to where we want it. Justin: No, no, no. Hold on. I think you're misunderstanding my question. Jake: No, I got it. I was getting there. Thank you for watching. Please like and subscribe. If you're new to our channel, you can use the links in the description below. Oh, okay, go on. You know, and I get that it's not a great thing, but I too, I see it as an opportunity to move up. I see it as an opportunity to move from, you know, being in the uppers to somewhere better than the uppers. I mean, I love the uppers and they're great in the metal lands, but if someone says, You want to move 10 rows down and over more towards the I'd be like, yeah, yeah, I do. Someone said, hey, you got an opportunity now to maybe go down to the mezzanine level and see the game from down there. I'd say, oh, I like that too. So while I'm not crazy about the money, although I've tried to save up for it and have put it in my head, I don't think it's an investment. I don't think it's— It's something you're going to get your use on a return. It's no more of an investment than going to a Broadway show.
01 Jake: You're not going to get money back. You spend $150 a ticket to go see some two people dancing for an hour. You're not going to come back and sell that. It's an investment in entertainment. And I think if you're someone who watches six or less games a year at the stadium. I'm buy them on StubHub. I think if you're someone who watches seven, eight, six, seven, eight games a year, I think then season tickets make sense, you know. If you're like me, who's totally insane, and you go to all 10 games a year, whether the preseason or not, hey, you know, go to, then enjoy that. Go to, go to the games. I mean, I, I go to all 10. In fact, I'm not only going to the two preseason, I'm actually going to the Giants' Jets preseason. So I'll be going to three of the four preseason plus all 10 games. Justin: or plus all eight games. So now why don't you answer my question. Will you this season, since there are season tickets available, try to get better seats than the ones that you have? Or is it too late because you've already bought them? Like, because they have all these seats available now and they can't sell them. Jake: But they're not approaching me to move up. Because they don't want me to move because then they just have to sell the one that I have. Justin: I'm not asking what they're approaching you for. I'm asking you, can you approach them? Sure. And say, hey, I have these. I want to sell them back to you. They're available. I want better ones. Jake: Yeah, sure. If I want to purchase net new. Justin: buy them net new. Jake: Yeah, but why would I buy more seats than I already have? Right, so that's the problem. In days past, if they had new seats, they could offer them to me. I could go to those seats and then they resell mine. But they can't sell those that are better. They're certainly not going to sell mine. I mean, you're going to a couple games with me this year. And you'll notice, I think it's going to be a sparse. I think the traffic's going to be nice, because I think it's going to be sparse. I think. Unless we are doing really well, those games are going to be pretty, pretty quiet. Justin: We're going to be awesome. Jake: Huh? We're going to be awesome. Well, I hope so. And I hope the stadium is rocking. And I hope we're doing everything I can. I call all you Jet fans listening. Don't believe the hype. Get out there. Support your team. High or low. Trust me, if you support them in a bad year, the next year when they're better, it's going to feel that much better. And you can say I was there when. I really will. Thank you. But anyway, so it's just an interesting kind of update. And as we get closer and as you know, I sort of get my call and I get to make my decision. I'll try to tell you what's going on with that. So to end up, let's let's do give me I think we're gonna do things you're excited about. So give me one, one thing. Justin: I'm excited about three things, though. I have three things. All right, give me three things. Jake: Give me three things you're excited about. Justin: for three things you're saying about for this uh the nfl right or in the for just the jets anything anything well not life but nfl and jets i picked the nfl i'm really looking forward to seeing Peyton Manning this year without Martin Marvin Harrison for the first time interesting i think
02 Justin: it's a really interesting kind of storyline that Thanks for watching! I think Tom Brady coming back, huge story being in our AFC East, bigger story, someone we have to deal with because they let their backup go. So if Brady, you know, we'll see how he does with the new knee. There's 11 new coaches this season. Yeah, did you know that? I did not know that. Rex is one of them. Yeah. And I think he'll stack up pretty good against those 11, I think. I was looking at the new 11 and Rex seems to have a better team to work with at the start. I mean, if you recall, the Jets were 8 and 3. And then they fuck that up. So I mean they do have a core of players that are pretty decent Jake: So those are my three things. Oh, I will say here's my three. I like those three I will add to the first one by saying I'm excited for a season that we don't have to talk about that far How's that? Yeah, if he stays retired, which by the way was news, but you know, I think everybody knows that He's staying retired not going the Vikings. I'm happy to have that happen I'm also happy to... I will be very excited, although kind of not now, but in the future we'll talk about it as the game comes up. I'm very excited to go to the last game at the Metallands. Justin: That'll be pretty cool. Jake: I know it's the last game, I think it's against the Bengals, and it's in the middle this winter, and it will probably be like six people there. But I can't wait to be honest. Justin: No, I think they'll be sold out. Everyone will be there. I think I can't no reason there's no reason for people not to go to the last game of a stadium Jake: Yeah, unless we're one in something Justin: Well, I I think giant fans will go I I really do. Oh really just to be there Yeah, I think so. I mean it is sort of a historic thing. Although To be honest, I hope that's not the last game. Jake: Well, that's true. I hope we had it. It'll be the last. Many more games after that. It's the last regular season game, no matter how you said it. And then the last thing I'm very excited about this season, I'm excited about continuing the podcast. This is the big going into our third year of running this puppy. And I don't like it. So I'm excited about keeping up. Justin: Excited about how's our traffic are we fans we have fans we have fans following us on Twitter Jake: Let's do some shout outs if you're if you're a jet Kingdom fan follow us on Twitter comm slash jet Kingdom Always head over to jet Kingdom comm check out the newest poll or articles has been written There's actually a great old article. We will be picking up our regular season schedule as we go along. We'll be doing some in the preseason, but then we'll be making our predictions every week. We'll be doing our, doing our wrap ups, our show or kind of what happened. Justin: We're doing our Super Bowl picks. Jake: We do that before the first game of the season. So that will probably be... Justin: I think I already picked my NFC team, so I'm going to keep it to myself. Jake: Alright, well you keep it all to yourself. We'll do all our preseason picks. We'll do all our... Justin: NFC is obviously the Jets. Jake: We will be picking our both our super fan pick and our regular normal. I don't have to pick the Jets. And so looking forward to the season, looking forward to doing it again, and one more year, three years is a lot. And for anything in the interweb, it's a ton for a podcast. I've actually seen so many jet podcasts come and go. And actually since the time we've started... Justin: Where are the ones that stick around? We're sticking around. We're the consistent ones. I think this will be 40. Boy, you put me on the spot. This is be 46 episode 46. Wow, we're coming up on show 50. Oh, and also go to the go to jakanim.com and click on schedule and events. I put up the 2009 interactive schedule, which is a week by week schedule. You can see the week it is actually it's updated every week with the wins and loses. So you can track that. But the nice thing is you go into any any in the game itself, you can download it right to your iCalendar or into your Google Calendar and put it in there so you know when the game is happening. So that's kind of fun. Other than that, that's all I have. I will leave it up to you to give us another last word of wisdom. It's sort of a thing we do sometimes. Justin: sometimes not today though well then we'll just end this podcast with the Jake: traditional go Jets
