17 Jake: This is episode number 47 of the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Thursday, August 27, 2009. Mark to start. Well, the J Kingdom podcast, as always on this side of digital preseason aisle, it's Jake and joining me across on the other side of the digital aisle, it's Justin. How you doing Justin? Justin: I'm doing just fine. Thank you Jake. Jake: I could call you just fine. Oh, that's terrible. Yeah, it's a horrible joke. Sorry. See, it's preseason. I'm getting all the bad. Getting. all the bad jokes out of my system in the preseason. Justin: I doubt all the bad jokes will ever get out of your system. Jake: That's true. It would take a lot of preseason. So we've got a lot to discuss. We've been away for two weeks. We've had a couple games happen. So let's discuss the preseason games. Let's talk about the starting quarterback, which was... done yesterday or announced yesterday. Then we're also, we're gonna rank, we're gonna ask you to rank. Justin: That was like a teaser, you didn't even tell him who. Jake: I know, ranked AFC East quarterbacks from one to four and starting quarterbacks for this year. Justin: This is cool that you're actually telling me what we're gonna do. Usually we just, you just make it up as we go along and I'm like, aha. Jake: And then we're going to talk about some quarterbacks that are both coming back from the, from sort of, you know, from two different places back from the retirement and back from prison. And then we'll wrap it up by talking about what's coming up in the, what's coming up in the near future for our podcast. Alrighty, so Let's talk about the preseason. You know, first, give me, did you, let's get the truth out there first. How many of the preseason games did you watch? Justin: I watched one and a quarter preseason games. I watched basically about half of the first game and about three quarters of the second game. Jake: Okay. Justin: And I do have some first impressions. Jake: Yeah. So give me some. So what did you say? What do you see? Justin: Impressions. Yeah. First off, I am proud and happy that I predicted that this Jets defense is going to be one of the best defenses in the league. We are going to kill some quarterbacks this year. We are going to kill quarterbacks. Seriously. We are going to be blitzing. on every play from all over the place. There's so much activity.
01 Justin: It's so cool to watch them after only two preseason games start to resemble this maniacal defense. They're in all sorts of weird formations. They're blitzing from everywhere. Safety's are on the line. They're dropping into coverage and... and... They haven't even played with their two best players in the game yet Dorell Reavis hasn't even played and Jenkins hasn't even played and that's I mean once those two guys step on the field You're gonna stop seeing those those short completions to the to the outside that are kind of being completed in front of Lowry and and the middle is gonna be clogged up a little bit more and it's just gonna be I'm excited. I am excited about that defense. Yeah, I Jake: So I think a few impressions that I got from the first game. So first game we played The Rams actually went to the game as a true fan not the Patriots fan that you are Actually went to the game as I do I'm actually going to three preseason games this year, which is a big waste of time It's a record. Oh, for sure. So I, you know, excited to watch, I think what I saw out of some of the people I was, you know, expecting, I think Thomas Jones looks in good, you know, good form, though, not doing anything I wouldn't expect him to do anyway. In the first game, currently, you know, watching Clemens come out and start it was okay. The thing that I was obviously surprised at the big play, although now it's been overshadowed by other big plays, but You know having marks and she's come out in his first pass being a a Forty I think 48 yard To clowny which was a great, you know a great starting you can counterbalance that with his second pass in the Starting the first the second game against the Ravens where he threw it for an interception run back for touchdown So, you know clearly what we saw out of the two quarterbacks was Consistency they were consistently just okay And as you know, as it's come along, we'll talk about it before, but how the choices of the of the of the quarterback was made. There seems to be some real reason why. But other things. First game, I said the defense was OK. I don't think they were rushing as much. Second game, watching, watching those guys, it was just like I keep going. Who's defense is that because that's not the just defense that I've ever seen, you know They sit back and watch defense this defense was all over the place They were they were blitzing every single time coming with as many players as they could or just drop into I mean it was Unbelievable and at Bart Scott. I swear some what he will kill somebody he hit Joe Flacco so hard in that one play I thought I thought he ran right through him So he wasn't going to ever get up ever again. Justin: And it's exciting, isn't it? Jake: If you got to talk about the defense, there's nothing more exciting than the offense.
02 Jake: And there's one man on the offense who I was having a chat with a good friend of ours. A good friend of ours, Ray Braun, we were talking about it. He's like, he said, like, if you had to name the best player in your team at Ray Braun. at Ray Braun and you know what? I think I might be convinced that it might be Leon Washington. If you said who's the playmaker, who is the guy? Justin: Yeah, Leon is definitely in the upper echelon of the roster. I mean he's a pro bowler, he's a captain. Yeah, he's MVP. They've named him the MVP. Jake: If there's anybody you want to see that ball given to at any point that could be a game changer, yeah, it's Leon Washington. Watching that third and 11 where he, you know, and against the Ravens where, third and 11, you're thinking, okay, this drive is just gonna, it's gonna shit the bed right now. It's not going anywhere. Boom. He pulls, like, pulls 12 yards, just running up the middle through a Ravens defense. So it's like. Yeah, that guy is good. So glad to have him on our team. Hope we can sign him for the long term Justin: into I truly You know cuz he he reminds me of You know, he has a real interesting like parallel track in his career to Really fine running back who also played in New York named Tiki Barber If you think about it, he Tiki came into the league as a undersized, skilled running back who made his name on third down and special teams returning punts. And then he got his chance to eventually be the guy. And I think Leon eventually will eventually. end up being the lead running back where there'll always be like another guy but like for Tiki he had like a big back always like a Ron Dain or more recently Brandon Jacobs they'll be another bigger guy but Leon will be the Thomas Jones the lead lead backer on the team and he's gonna be a special player I do hope that they keep him because he's really uh talented with the ball in his hands. He can go out wide, he can play in the slot, he can come out of the backfield, he can run in the middle, outside. I imagine he can throw the ball if they asked him to. Seriously, if they did one of those reverse, weird, odd plays. Which by the way, they should never do on the 10 on their own 10 yard line 10 yard line Jake: Did you see how close that guy's foot came to stepping in the backfield? Justin: Well, I mean, why would you call that play on on the 10? I don't know you end up handing the ball off in the end zone It's like and then you have ed reed. Why would you know it reads gonna just fine whoever is the football so you're not fooling them I like that I really you
02 Jake: know one of the things I saw that again I hadn't really realized that was happening was that Rex Ryan is calling the defensive plays he's he's the Justin: defensive play caller and yeah they said that he was gonna do that when when he came in he said that he was going to be doing yeah again Jake: I might have slept to that, but I just didn't realize that he would—because I think there's a thing about coaches, head coaches that come from one side of the field, like you're offensive coordinators or defensive coordinators, and then they hire guys and then they basically manage, right? They become the managers. And a little bit is about the Peter Principle, right? You just get to the point where you get promoted above your own ability. And I like that he kind of says, listen, here's here's what I'm known to do. Here's what my specialty is. Yeah, I got a good, you know, I got a really good defensive coordinator here. I'm going to hand over, you know, the craziness to Schottenheimer, kick us in the ass, but he's going to hand it over to Schottenheimer and he's going to focus on the defense. And if there's nothing else, his pedigree, his pedigree for his defense, that alone makes me feel like, wow, he's not giving up on what he does. He's going to make that really great. And so I can't wait to see that happen in the season. I'm actually after seeing that Ravens game, I'm, I'm much more. I'm much more on board with we're gonna have a killer defense especially with revisit and uh, Justin: Jenkins being out yet the two best players on that defense you haven't even seen the two best players Jake: I don't know two best players. You gotta put bar scott in there. Sorry Justin: I mean, all right at every level you have yeah, the best player at on the defensive line is jankins and the best player Yes, backfield is Dorell Rivas. So they're racing both of those guys and and they're both pro bowlers from last season So they're gonna make an impact when they come on the field uh, also I think that what we saw the other night, um against baltimore is very much a That is the mold for what we're trying to be the team that we played against The our head coach just came from there obviously and His style is still being played there because his disciples are still coaching there on the defensive side of the ball on the offensive side of the ball, Cam Cameron, Schottenheimer is a disciple of Cam Cameron who you know they coach very similar if you watch Baltimore their their offenses you know I think that that's what the Jets offense is going to actually look like on this team we're gonna They had scored one offensive touchdown. Yeah, like it was closer than that, right? At that point, I don't even remember.
01 Justin: What was the final 24-23, something like that? Jake: Right, that's only because we went for a two-point conversion. Yeah, I mean... In the final... We could have kicked the field goal and gone 24-24, but we went for the two-point conversion to win the game because it's preseason. Who cares? Justin: Yeah, I mean, Hello, Dean, and Otto made a great play and... Sanchez was, I think, pretty nervous. Because his first couple of throws were pretty shit. Yeah. But then he got kind of into the game and looked good and drove us down the field with the with the running game. And that's what they're going to do. That's that's just what we're going to do. We're going to see a lot of seven, three first halves, I think. whether we're on one side or the other. I think that's what we're in for. And, you know, it's going to be interesting. Jake: I totally agree. Justin: This is what I think coming out of preseason at least. Jake: This is, then let's shift right to the topic at hand, which is that Marc Sanchez yesterday. was named the starting quarterback for the 2009 season, which, you know, there's been lots of back and forth on. I think the fans are somewhat divided, although again, when I was at training camp and at Clements' out there, it was like, Clements, and then when Sanchez came out, I was like, you got it, Sanchez! When I'm watching the game, like when I was at the game and the same thing happened and Sanchez came out. I think the fans, the media, the NFL, the coaches, you know, Gedel. Everybody wants to see Sanchez out there. And I think the big, you know, I do think it's the right decision. I think there's a lot to talk of should he wait, should he sit, should he, you know, I think the day and age of quarterback sitting for two years is gone. I think the amount of money you pay these guys now, the amount, you know, it's all about that. that really. Well, it's about that, but it's also about what you're doing to them. If you're a David Carr and you're going onto a shit team with shit offensive line and no anything, no weapons, yeah, you're going to do poorly and you might get scarred for life. Also, maybe David Carr just never was that good. Then you go to someone like the Flackos and the Ryans and hopefully the Sanchezes and And you say, maybe what you have here is a situation where you're given the weapons you know he's given yes he's gonna make the thing is he's gonna make incredible mistakes stuff that we're just gonna go oh my god like i guess for us oh my god i can't believe me that but for every mistake he makes he will learn something and that and what he learns in this season will hopefully is what will make him win Game and game and playoff and playoff and Super Bowl and Super Bowl for us in seasons to come I'm not saying we couldn't we couldn't win the whole thing this year. Sure. We could I mean, it's you know probably not gonna happen but It's time to get going, you know, the Clemens Clemens isn't gonna win any more games for us this year a game
01 Jake: No, I don't even believe that I would if you asked me to say Honestly, I don't think he has any upside to him. He has what he has. Sanchez is upside, big upside, and it could be great and it could also be shitty, but whatever it is, we gotta get to know this guy and get him into the system. Justin: Yeah, I couldn't agree more at this point. Like watching Clemens throw that interception that he threw for the touchdown was like... to me was like, ugh, if he's gonna be doing that, then... why have him on the field? Like, you know what I mean? That's the kind of stuff that if Sanchez does, you're like, alright, you know... Alright. Heh heh heh. You know, get up. Don't... You'll do better next time, but when Clemens does, it's like... Fuck man, we got this kid on the bench that can do that. So let's let him do that and learn. And, you know, you watch this happen to a lot of players, you know, a lot of them struggled in their in their first years. But even with that, they could come out of it kind of victorious. Like, you know, for every Like you said, David Carr and there is like a Ben Rafflesburger who played really young and won really young. So we shall see. Jake: Yeah, it's history setting. It's history setting for the Jets. And yeah, there's lots of factors. Yes, Woody Johnson wants to have his franchise quarterback out there on the field. Yes, Rex Ryan is taking the blueprint of what happened last year, which again... I'm not on board by saying that blueprint can actually work. I mean, it's a blueprint. You can get a blueprint and not be able to build the house. I think we got the right stuff and we'll see if we can do it. But there's a lot of factors. But I like that he's trying it. And you know what? If he can get half the defense that the Ravens are, and if we can do. half the stuff that we did last year. And that's the other thing, there are the players on this team that actually were here last year and we had a quarterback last year that threw 22 interceptions. 22 interceptions. Do we really expect Mark Sanchez to throw 22 interceptions? He might. I bet he won't. I bet he'll throw less than 22. 22's a lot. Justin: Yeah, well he won't throw as many times. Well that's, as Farr did. Jake: Yes, I'm excited. I think as a jet fan going to the season He said Clemens is gonna play in Sanchez is gonna is gonna sit there on the bench I would be going to every game going come on just put in Sanchez just put I mean, you know get him in there It's time to see what we have. It's time to turn the corner. I think Clemens is a great guy I think he's a stand-up citizen. I'm sure he you know visits his mother on her birthday, but It's time, it's we know what we have in him, we know what he can and cannot do. And I think you said exactly. To throw that interception as Marc Sanchez, who's never played a down in regular season down and probably his sixth pass attempt ever in the NFL, is one thing.
04 Jake: To do that for a guy who's been in the system for four years and should know better, it's another. And so to me it was like he gave it up at that point and also he's even they're playing even their stats really are How can a guy who's never played be even with a guy who's been there for four years like it's not a how can it Justin: He's better. It's not even that's it. It's not even it's like an easy question Jake: And you know for all the for all the crap that's going on ravens that defense was coming Justin: Oh shit, I mean that's the thing. I mean he did get his first career start against that team, even though it was the preseason. They weren't playing preseason ball. It really, well it really was the second game which is kind of more competitive than the first and fourth. But it's still preseason, it wasn't the regular season and the crowd wasn't... regular season crowd either So it's you know it is a little different, but it was a challenge for sure. I remember watching like back whenever Eli Manning was a rookie they played the Ravens and Eli Manning it was like his Maybe they had they had gone like five and three the Giants and they had just decided to have Forget it with Kurt Warner. We're not gonna like win anything so we'll just start Eli for the rest of the season as a rookie and he started the last eight games and he was just kind of awful in his first four and uh he played the Ravens and the Ravens I think his quarterback rating was like a zero yeah I do remember that zero and uh like they're that good I mean and to a rookie to see That, I mean, the looks that they give are looks that veteran veteran quarterbacks don't are not able to like decipher and do anything with or understand or be able to throw through or, you know, defend themselves against. So you know, it's commendable to throw them to the wolves. I mean, he really did. Poor kid threw it. through a interception for a touchdown in his first ever throw as a starter, but oh well He'll he'll live and learn and he'll start many games. Hopefully. Yeah, I rather him do that now Jake: I rather get it out of the system Yeah, the other thing you compare is I think in even in the drills and the scrimmages I think Marc Sanchez through like five interceptions and Cummins through 12 Or maybe it's 11 or 12 in the practices. So like Justin: Clemens had that year behind fire where five just showed him the gunslinger way. He was like just whip it Jake: Just whip it. We did good. So I'm totally excited. I think it's a great decision. I'm right behind so far I love what I see and at one other moment or one of the thing that I saw that I
00 Jake: You know, I was kind of getting worried about Rex Ryan and maybe still a little bit. He's a talker and he kind of reminds me—I know there are all the Jeff Fins out there, I'm sorry, I'm going to say it—he kind of reminds me a little bit of Herm, right? He's got that kind of just likes to talk to the media. He's a buddy-buddy. He chats it up. He makes the jokes. Justin: But I'll tell you the one thing—he's—he does—listen to his press conference. Jake: Since you don't even watch, you know, the whole games, listen to his press conferences. I've listened to every single one of them. They are very he's very chatty very kind of like Bumble and stumbling talking he doesn't talk in full sense. I mean alright, you know he's not an idiot But he's not you know he's not eloquent. I guess is a question But listen the one thing that I see from him that I did we never saw from from herm Is that when he's on the field I was watching him because I was like I'm worried is this guy Just gonna be like a media guy I watched him on the field and that man is intense on the field and he knows his exes and knows I don't care if he's good with the meter you're not or if he's funny or not But that he looks like he knows his exes and knows Justin: Compare him to her. He's like a he's a defensive whiz like her was a rah-rah cheerleader I know I was a manager like you said This guy's a coach Jake: I can't I can't wait to see it because he's starting to remind me that with that kind of like reminds me more of Parcells than anybody. I I would agree except for yeah, I guess I do but yeah Justin: Guy to compare him to before he's ever coached a game, but one of the greatest coaches ever to yeah Jake: I'm not comparing to his father. Let's go on to some other news, like the other Kingdom segments as we get warmed up here to the podcast. We got two things going on here, one of which you can talk about briefly only because it relates a little bit, but both are NFL big news. We got the QBs. We have one coming out of prison and one coming out of retirement. I want to get your take on both. What do you feel about the Farr and the Vikings? of what you feel about. because the last time we talked he was not with the Vikings he was retired and we were happy he was retired and what do you feel about Vic coming out and getting signed by Eagles giving a little down Justin: Farve fooled us again he actually had me I thought he was actually gonna stay retired this time I don't care, he's gonna play in Minnesota good for him. I have no... I really actually have no like... connection to him or anything of the sort like I don't really even care. I'll tell you this, I don't think they got any better. How about that? I really don't having had Brett Favre last year. and seeing what he did for us last year I don't think, and knowing what the Vikings did last year, I don't think they got any better by adding Brett Favre. They could have done whatever they're going to do with whoever they had on their roster already
05 Justin: because they have Adrian Peterson, they're good defense and they're going to run the ball regardless and Brett Favre can only fuck that up for them to be honest. He's just gonna come in there and sort of do what he did for us, which was little energy in the beginning, but then suck the life out towards the end. Which is, I think, what he's gonna do in Minnesota to be truthful. And I think he just ruined himself in Green Bay. I mean, that's gonna be the fucking game of the year. Okay. I'll tell you if that's not on TV, I'll be at your house watching that game. The Vikings at Green Bay, if Farrve's still healthy at that point. I think they play later on in the season. Aren't you looking forward to that game? I mean, that's going to be kind of cool. Jake: He's going to get shit thrown at him. I mean, really. Justin: He's really killed himself in a... in a fantasy land. Jake: And he and he got us to nine and seven doubt that's an uplift right that's double the wins right could we've gone farther without him? Maybe maybe not maybe chad could have gotten this nine and seven or beyond I kind of don't think he could have although clearly he did pretty well and in uh down the dolphins Uh, the real chad showed up in the playoffs um So i think it is a different situation i was looking is a year older i think he's not as i don't think it's there and i think the team is accepting of him as they were of. Bread although you know we hear about him being you know sort of often self so does all that i will say though. The American and the sports, the American society and the sports nation society's ability to forget is unbelievable. You view the time by the time Brett Farr goes to the Hall of Fame, which is five years after he retires, which let's say he retires and stays retired next year, right, so let's let's call it 2010. That means he wouldn't be eligible to 215 or 216, something like that. Yes, he was the first ball. He's a first ballot. Yes. He'll go in I tell you no one will give a rat's ass What he did five years ago. No one will remember freaking, you know No, they won't no, they won't they won't they say they will but they won't because people just don't care a year later I mean just even like with Michael Jackson. I know it's a weird crosslet but
02 Jake: I've all these fans are like, they're all living his life like he was the greatest thing in the world and yet he was a pedophile and yet people were like, yeah, he sang beat it and he's on every cover of every magazine. Trust me, in six years, no one's going to care. They didn't care about Joe Montana did it, they didn't care when Joe Namath did it, they didn't care when... The only person who didn't do it was Elway and Marino, but everybody else does it. They all leave and they go play a couple years somewhere else and who cares? Yes, it's a rival, but I'm telling you. Justin: Green Bay is a unique situation. Jake: Yes, but like a bad girlfriend, he will show up again and they will take him back and they will let you. Justin: No, I really don't. I really don't. believe that. I mean, I want to draw a parallel to a sport, unlike you who goes to a Michael Jackson, I'm going to go to Roger Clemens, who will go to the Hall of Fame, probably in a couple years, I think he'll go in. whether it's first ballad, second ballad, whatever the steroid thing if it affects it too. I don't know. But he'll go in eventually. Probably as a red sock, I imagine. Because he pitched his ton of years and probably his best years in the beginning of his career. First 10 maybe, or maybe more as a red sock. Then he pitched for the rival Yankees. And I tell you, the people in Boston, it's not... It's not... They don't give a fuck about Roger Clemens. They hate him, I would say. So I really do think that by going to play for the Vikings... farv is is is Kind of sealing his fate with the Packer Nation in Green Bay. It's very unique situation in Green Bay. It's kind of all they have Jake: Yeah, it doesn't matter what they have they will welcome him back, but that's another situation What so let's go on to Michael Vick and? Yeah, okay, that's Justin: There well, you know, I I really should be back should it be allowed actually I mean if if it's up to the NFL and the NFL says yes. Oh, yes I mean, it's a it's you know if He does what he does really well, and if a team wants to hire him, they should be able to hire him, and they hired him. The Eagles. So I don't think while the dogfighting is as horrific as it is, it's not anything to do with, you know, football. And since somebody was willing to hire him, the Eagles...
04 Justin: let him play. So, you know, whether or not he's gonna be, you know, a factor, I don't know. I mean, he was pretty fucking good. And he's not gonna have to do what he had to do when he was with Atlanta, which was carry the team as the quarterback. He's gonna to be able to, you know... sit there and kind of be a decoy probably most of the time and And they're gonna have some fun with with him and McNabb and Westbrook the three of them just standing there Can you imagine the three of those guys just standing there in the backfield? That's scary I know all three of them could kill you you know mcnabb with his arm and not so much with his legs anymore westbrook andy which way and vick with his legs and his arm i mean you're in trouble there there that's uh you're on mute there buddy oh what'd you miss Did you say anything about Andy Reid? Jake: Yeah, when you're talking it's really like I miss nothing. So it was for a second or two. Oh, OK. Justin: But they're going to have some fun is what I basically said. Jake: Yeah, no, I heard the fun part. I have a couple feelings about this. One is that I think he's a despicable human being. Let's just get that out there. Justin: Well, yeah, he's sure. He's awful. Jake: What he did. what he did to the dogs or whatever, again, it's not like a little or something who gets involved in something by mistake or whatever, does something bad, but then really is a one-time mistake, a drunk driving. He did something, he funded something that is horrific, the mistreatment of these animals who don't have any protector. Let's just get that out of the way. But I also believe in paying your- paying the piper and getting redemption. I'm not a religious person, but I think if you go to jail, if you are sentenced and you go to jail, you do your time, you are a good boy, you come back out, I think he has every right to be back and to get his job back or to at least try to get his job back. I think he's paid his price. I don't like it. I don't like him as a person, but I believe in his right to be back in the NFL. I think the Eagles are probably a great choice for him as opposed to someone like the Raiders or something that would have been awful. Justin: That would have been just playing in the jail league. Jake: In some ways, the Eagles don't need him at all. Justin: That's why it's kind of the best situation for him to be in. Plus, I think having a guy like... like McNabb who was a very similar player to him and he could relate to him on that level of being an athletic quarterback who they said, this guy can't be this way, he has to change,
01 Justin: he has to play this way, that way they can relate on a football level that is kind of different than You know anything I guess you know being able to be teammates and talk about things in gang Probably talk about things that that he hasn't been able to talk about in like, you know, two and a half years football Which is what he probably the only thing he really knows outside of Dogs and killing them like you hear some of his statements. He's so fucking dumb He's really like stupid Like you can't even write Jake: Yeah, I so anyway, but I believe he's you know, she have the right to come back and Well, we'll see how fast I also don't think you'll be that effective I I don't think they can scheme them whatever but that's what it's gonna have to be it's not like he's gonna sit there and play Justin: Quarterback down Mcnab sitting there playing quarterback. So yes, the scheme them in there somehow How the whatever he's gonna play I mean he's gonna sit there in the backfield.
