16 Jake: This is episode 45 of the Jet Kingdom podcast from Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Minicab Well welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. As always on this side of the digital aisle, still the digital aisle, it's Jake. Although I'm forgetting how we did this. It's been a few, it's been a few weeks. I was just gonna say, what are we doing? We're doing a podcast. On the other side, already speaking up, is my buddy Justin. How you doing Justin? Justin! Always here always on the other side of the digital aisle and I remembered to press are you still a are you still a Jets fan? I Think so, I think right now Actually to be very honest. I am more of a jet fan in June of 2009 then I have been in probably the last five June's I am like Really, I'm never excited in June and I'm actually really excited. Why are you not excited in June? Does this make any sense? I'm never really too excited about football in June. It's just, you know, it's not top of mind. But you know, this... team actually has me very excited about themselves. I don't know if it's like the fact that I can follow them on Twitter and see them like talking about stuff. If I have like different insights into the team or if it's Rex and his whole demeanor and attitude is like a complete opposite shift of mangenie and his kind of very snooty hands-off... He didn't almost like he wasn't approachable, he was like a machine. Rex kind of seems like a man and a cool one at that. So, you know, he challenges players to fights, he does kind of cool things, and he's bringing that Ravens fight and that Ravens defense up north to New York. And I'm thinking we're gonna have one of the top five defenses in the league, and we're gonna be nasty too. like nasty about it. Couldn't agree more. I think there's certainly he is certainly bringing a level of swagger. I mean the way he talks. I know he haven't even done anything yet. It's barely mini camps and the guy is like talking. Yeah so we'll see. I will say if you're gonna subscribe to two podcasts about the Jets after you subscribe to Jet Kingdom. Go over and subscribe to the official Jets podcast where they send the press conferences
00 Jake: down so you can basically get the unedited, well, just a 26 minute press conference or 25 minute press conference. And it's interesting because you get to really hear him talk and answer questions which you would normally see, you know, in little bits and pieces or clips on but you get to hear the whole thing. And he certainly has a interesting style. He's. I wouldn't say he's a great speaker. He kind of talks in little bits and boards and like, yeah, so we're going to do well, and you know how that'll be, and we're going to happen. And it's kind of good, and whatever happens, it's good stuff. And we kind of like that guy, because he's a good guy. But generally, you get the sense that he really understands his stuff. uh... why his stuff i would be defense because it is about the offense uh... and i think is a good handle on you know where we are which is a team that you know didn't it didn't win the fcs was actually the third place last year and we want to be which is uh... we want when the fcs we want to be the big dogs and All right. We don't want to apologize for it. So he's made comments about, you know, I'm not just going to go up to, I'm not just going to go up to New England and, and, you know, look at, and look at his rings. He's like, I'm going to go on and I'm going to pick a fight and I'm, we're going to go for it and I really like it. Cause it does seem like a different attitude and genie, you know, I don't know, it's even hard now, even he hasn't been that long gone, but. uh, he, you know, was he that smart? Was he outsmarting himself? I mean, what? Yes, he was outsmarting himself and he will learn in time to almost go with instincts as opposed to he almost didn't have the instincts. Um, it may be an experience because he had the brain. I truly believe he did, but I think he outsmarted himself by, uh, by almost planning too much and then not Allowing himself to take from it. So so he he was like oversmarting himself in a sense and then a lot of the things that I've been reading or seeing Obviously about the defense a lot has been written and said about the defense not too much outside of Mark Sanchez for the for the offense, but a lot of the things that they've been saying is you're gonna see guys lined up where you've never seen them lined up before. You're gonna see Chris Jenkins maybe line up at defensive end, or you're gonna see, you know, maybe Rhodes is gonna be all over the place. You might see a defensive end line up as a line. You never know. You might have one guy standing there. who knows with this guy because he's gonna be sending people and they're gonna be coming from all over the place and the whole idea is to confuse the hell out of the other team. So he's gonna be moving people around and managing it. You always seem to just throw this the first year he did it where you saw a lot of moving around and different formations and different styles and different things. But over the last two years you have...
08 Jake: I totally agree. I mean, if nothing he's going to bring from Baltimore is just that Baltimore D with their just. you know during practice and training camp, how is that going to affect them as it's going to make them a better offense, it's going to make them you know need to hide stuff, you don't think so? It didn't ever... They're going to be just crap? No, I don't know if they're going to be crap necessarily, I mean look it didn't do anything for Baltimore ever, Baltimore never had a good offense and even last year their offense wasn't that good, it was just better. Their offense was never good, so if going by that theory of playing against a good defense in practice, you'd be a better offense, I don't subscribe. But, I think what he will do, Rex, that Mangini didn't do so much was allow Schottenheimer to do whatever he wants. I think think Schottenheimer for the first time in his this now being his fourth year I believe of being a coach will actually have a little bit more lean leeway and A little bit more slack to kind of do something because I'm just looking at it from the surface It kind of looks like Rex is basically coaching the defense with his defensive coordinator guy and just saying to Schottenheimer, go. Have a blast. We'll give you a good field position. We'll even score seven points a game. Enjoy. I will say that that's the starting, the one thing that I'm starting to kind of worry about, Rex, is he seems to be so defense minded that Is he going to be a good head coach? There are players who are so good at what they do, then it's the Peter principle, then they get moved up to the next level. Then are they good at that? Will he translate well from being a really great defensive coach to a good head coach? Or is he just going to be a head coach who? Only cares about the defense and the offense, you know just kind of goes off in its own thing Maybe shatner is good enough to do it But that's why you have a head coach to kind of make the overall decision So it that that is kind of one of the sort of worries with Rex and he is almost God, I don't want to say he sounds sort of He just doesn't sound well put together. I mean, neither did Mangini, but like he just sounds like he's kind of off the cuffing everything. So is he going to be, I don't know, is he going to have enough of Mangini's smarts? Yeah, he'll have a lot of off the cuff, but will he go for it three times in a row on
00 Jake: fourth and one and not get it? I don't know. It's so interesting. I'll say that's the thing that I'm looking forward to this season is there's so many unknowns. The defense is an unknown. the offense, which you should get to, is going to be an unknown. I mean, we know some of the players, but how are they going to work together? I just don't see this as being anywhere middle of the tier season. This is either going to be a great season of great fun and some great games and wins, or it's just not going to work. And we're going to have it's never going to gel together. And then the quarterbacks are going to puke and the defense will never come together. Or the defense won't be able to bail them out of it, you know every single time So let's go on to a couple other we got couple tactics amazing after almost. I think it's been almost a month and a half Well, you know, how about this mark Sanchez? highest paid jets jets player ever 60 million dollars 28 million dollars 50 60 like I'm bonuses and such I think it's 60 total 28 million guaranteed, which is the big number because you can be $400 million contract, but if it's 2 million guaranteed, then that means You're never going to earn that $400 million. So the $28 million is huge. I love that they got it done so soon. Even to me, honestly, the money is the money. And I know it's $28 million. But that's what this game is about now. It is about $28 million and $30 million and $60 million. That's what it's about. out. What's interesting, I think, is it's signed now. There is no talk of him missing camp. There's no talk of missing anything. I mean, he was signed, you know, before, I think in the middle of minicamp. It's done. And now he will walk in first day and we will get him up and running. I still think there's no way in hell he's not the star. I think they'll talk about this, you know, quarterback conversation, air quotes. And they'll say, oh, Kellen had a good day, and Mark had a good day, and, you know, I don't know about today, I don't know about tomorrow. But in the back of their head, like the back of everybody else's head, you just laid the line for one of the most, you know, NFL ready quarterback. in an NFO Ready System. Number one guy the total the fan base is excited about it. No one's excited about seeing Clemens play No one no one wants to see Kevin's play. They want to see Marc Tansha's play They want to see what they did last year with with Joe Flacco So they can talk and talk and talk about all these other things I think he's the guy who's gonna start and it's just a matter of how fast we can get him up and running To a point where he wins which brings us to another little kind of mini question. It's I'll pose this to you. So where do you fall on the plexico case because now It looks like plexicos court case will not happen within this year. So he's eligible in theory to Be shopped around the Jets has some other teams are interested. What do you think about that? I? Think that plexico would be a great jet for at least one season I I think that
02 Jake: You know just because he's had some legal troubles doesn't mean that he can't play football he obviously can He's won two Super Bowls Did he win that one with the with the Steelers the first time they won the Super Bowl? I can't recall if he was on that team or not. I think he may have been either way He he's one is either way. He's he's He's really a top-notch wide receiver who can win football games for a team. He won some games for the Giants as a matter of fact. He had a good hand in winning the Super Bowl and the Jets probably their weakest position on the entire team is probably wide receiver. I can't think of a position where they're weaker. Can you? Wow, I mean I would say probably quarterback, but you're right. I think the problem with the offense right now is that there's no player that has yet to prove, and again, one of these players might do it, the clownies, the stukies, the cotturis, they might prove it, or even the Brad Smith. They might step up and be the guy that you've got a game plan for. But right now, if you're a defensive coordinator going up against the Jets, a defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans on opening day, you're going, eh, okay, we're just gonna cover them. We don't have to- We're gonna put eight in the box and stop the run, and then they're not gonna really be able to do much. And we don't have to double up anybody, and we're not really worried about anybody breaking our back. Thank you for your feedback. Thank you. And Plexico could do that. So I'm not against bringing in Plexico by any means. There are other receivers that are out there still that haven't signed with any teams. Marvin Harrison is still out there. You know, this guy on Denver, Brandon Marshall, who was a pretty good player for a couple of years. He wants out of Denver supposedly. I can't recall what happened with Tory Hall. He signed. Am I right? I think he signed. Oh, I don't know if Tory Hall signed. Maybe. I think he did. I think he actually signed in San Francisco. But aside from that, I think it's a need. A, you have a rookie quarterback. So getting him as many weapons as possible. especially big tall ones that are 6'6", if you're in trouble you could kind of just throw it in the air in their general direction and they'll kind of go up and either tip it or catch it and then a weapon in the red zone where you can... I watch the Giants many times, Eli Manning just throw the ball up in the air and near Plaxko down on the two yard line and touchdown. So, I have no problem with that actually.
00 Jake: I think it's a need. They have one of the best offensive lines in the league, returning all five starters, so they're going to be able to run. Teams are going to game plan against them to run. If you have a guy like Plax going the outside, you can't really do that. Yeah, I don't think it could hurt. I mean, the only question is whether, you know, for, let's say, our rookie quarterback who's starting to you need sort of a guy who... You know, questionable locker room, question like he brings he doesn't bring a great leadership ability. He's always been the outsider. He's always been in trouble. He's always been so like, do you need that kind of distraction? It it helps Eli in terms of the throwing the ball. It didn't help Eli in terms of being a good team leader like. He never really became that team leader until I think Pysicle was hurt most of that season that they won the Super Bowl And he came back for the playoffs, but he missed a couple games He wasn't hurt towards the end and then shock it was it was shocking really being out on that team, but Aside from that I think talent Around a rookie quarterback is always a good thing Last year, Flacco had two receivers, one in Mason that was a very good veteran, well respected around the league, and then another up and coming player in Clayton who was in his third season out of, I think, I want to say Oklahoma. So those two guys are actually pretty decent receivers, Sanchez doesn't really have that luxury of having that. So getting somebody like complex go yeah, I I'm for it. I'm for it. Yeah, I mean, I don't think money's an issue, right? I don't think mine is an issue. I think it'll be a one year. I mean again because he's really he he if he if his court case Doesn't happen and if the NFL hasn't ruled on it yet, then he's basically good for a year anyway So he'll be paid some outrageous one year, you know Million dollars two million dollars to play for the year and that's it and he'll use that money to help him in court You know what? Let me let me let me put it this this way If we were to sign Plex Kibiras, it'd be less of a band-aid in my mind than signing Brett Favre was last year. True. True, because I think there's more weapons around and Brett Favre was the game. I also think that you wouldn't game plan for Plex. Plex would help with the game plan. Like what we saw in the problem with, not problem, but what happened with Brett Favre and the offense that we saw Schottenheimer run, you know, not last year, but two years ago was a lot of movement, a lot of movement at the line, a lot of changing in formation and then income for Brett Favre and it was like, okay, everybody step up at the line and sit for 30 seconds. Wait, wait, wait, let Brett Favre look around, look around, look around, look around, cash a check, you know, okay, now let's go. So it didn't you know the defenses weren't
01 Jake: Sort of having to move around with him. I think now we're gonna go right back to that That would be the only thing I was saying Kellen Clements his favors. He knows that you know that system whether mark yeah That's a crazy system. I remember Chad running that The first year that man genie took over with with shot and Himer and thinking Wow That's a lot of movement. I know that they adopted it from San Diego where Schottenheimer was, and that's kind of, they still run that in San Diego where they set, and then they all move. Like you'll have the tight end in the backfield and the full back spread out wide, and then they'll all move and shift into where they need to be, and then they'll shift again. And I thought that they were doing it for Chad, because... uh oh. They needed to create deception as opposed to just lining up and whizzing the ball down the field. But I think it was also a good strategy in the long run because they were confusing teams. They were getting them in awkward situations and Favre just came in in the third week of... training camp and uh and just wasn't having learning all that stuff and you weren't gonna have him learn all that stuff because he wasn't gonna be there for more than a year anyway so well i i do remember you saying two years hey look i want i i was all for the two years but i i wanted the continuity of two years but Unfortunately, we were only able to throw our one season away instead of two, so that was good. I mean, really, when you look at last year, it's such a fucking throwaway. I mean, I know that they started off 8-3, but it was a complete throwaway season. It meant nothing for the Jets. Like, it didn't... looking back on it. It did not even feel like a Jets season. But you could say that every year they don't win the Super Bowl. Well, first of all, no. We don't win the Super Bowl. What was going to happen last year? What was going to happen if he didn't throw up anyway? It felt like a throwaway year in the continuity of building the team. Yeah, but it got rid of Mangini, so in that way you should be very happy about it. Well, you know, he did start off 8-3 until his skills started to deteriorate. And then maybe if they would have had, you know... The defense started to deteriorate, the team just started to tank in December. And it was pathetic. I mean, the defense couldn't stop people and the offense couldn't score. Throwing picks left and right. You know, I again, I don't look it if you look at every season like it's only good if we you know built the team Well, we didn't build the team last year. We got rid of our head coach and we got rid of our starting quarterback That's not building building the team now now we're building so is this year a throwaway year Well, no, it's not throw away here. If we go out and make the playoffs. It's not throw away I don't know. I can't get too much into that because it just gets it gets too much and I Like then I just then every year becomes worthless and like I don't want every year to be worthless
00 Jake: I want every year to be fun. Some of those games were amazing to go to some of those games I will remember forever, you know that to me is what the sports about not about you know, the the the actual win at the end but anyway, so One of the things, well two of the little things and then we can wrap it up here. One is the Rex phone call. So Jet Season Ticket holders, like me, got a call yesterday and I literally, I saw the number and I thought, like, who's calling me from Jersey? And I pick it up and it was a voice recording, like kind of a robo call from Rex Ryan. and it was. Really odd, but then as I listen to it, it was really awesome. It's like hey Jets fans Rex Ryan here Just want to kind of give you a call and say that we're really excited about this year and about you and how we're gonna Make this team the best and we want you to step up and we want to make this the hell that you know We don't make the metal and the worst place for any team to go into You know, we want when the defense is on the field, we want you to be louder than loud and take and just make it miserable for the other team. We're really looking for it. And it was like, this is a little pep talk. And then, you know, thanks. And it was kind of honest feeling. Didn't sound like he was reading too much from a script. And an interesting tactic. I must say I've never, I mean, I've been robocalled before for like... You know, um, political ones, but I've never got a nay, robo call from the, uh... You never have? From the Jets? I've gotten them from the Yankees. I'm a season ticket holder of the Yankees. So I've actually gotten calls from John Sterling, who is their radio announcer, as like a kind of recording. I think also maybe Joe Torrey may have done one a couple years back. Huh. Yeah, so it's something that teams do. That's interesting. Well, it was effective. I mean, again, they're in the midst of this PSL thing, which currently just... It's got to be going horribly wrong. It's hard to tell. It's hard to tell where it's going because... I know where they are and the Giants apparently have done okay. I know that they're up to the year 1985. They started in 1977 was the earliest year. They're up to 1985 and they're still selling them. I know people are buying them. It's a question of when they get up to people like me of 2004. or even beyond, like where are they gonna be? Are they gonna be at 80%, are they gonna be at 70%, are they gonna be at 50%? Like that's the problem. Right now you're halfway through the system and they're not gonna tell us anyway what they're doing or how it's coming out. Of course not, why would they? Yeah, I don't know. I'm looking for the chance to buy tickets. I hope that that's what I get to really. I just, I wanna get to the chance to buy tickets. We'll see if that happens. But, uh, you can buy tickets. They're just $20,000. Yeah. What was the question? If, if they're $20,000 in the place I want, if they're $20,000 in the place
04 Jake: I don't want, I don't, well, we'll see what we're going to do. Um, and then, uh, I think that's it. Is bor any of the news on around the NFL and other kingdoms that you want to discuss or, or, or hold out on? Um, not so much really, you know, like I said, I'm never really too into football at this time of the year. As you know, I'm kind of baseball rules the summer. We're going to a game tomorrow. And we are going to a game tomorrow at the new Yankee Stadium, which should be a heck of a good time. Um... So not really, no. Nothing more on football. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I can feel them. We signed Sean Green. We signed Sean Green. We signed Marc Sanchez. Mini-camps went well. It was like an even chase. But yeah, it's kind of just kicking around. I guess the next big thing will be... I don't even know. I guess there's some stuff in June and then we got July. Well, there's still some free agent stuff kicking around because inevitably there's a couple guys that get cut late and get thrown out there to the market and it can make an impact. So there's that to look out for. And then I guess training camp, right? Can't wait for training camp, and that's end of July. So that's not too far away. We're in middle of June. We're going a month and a half. So again, we'll probably kick it around. If there's something huge that happens, you'll hear from us. Other than that, make sure to jump on to the Twitter for twitter.com. and follow us there or leave comments or do whatever you need to do. Always head on over to www.jetkingdom.com. We'll try to post some off season articles and put up some new polls and things like that and tell a friend. I don't know. That's all I have to say. Justin, I'm going to give you the last moment. See if you can mess it up here in June. Anything you got to say? Nothing? Absolutely, positively, nothing. Alrighty then, way to bring the show to a close. So until... Screeching halt. Until the next time that we come out into your little earbuds and you can listen to our fine voices, talk of the New York Jets. Until then, as always... Go Jets!
