00:11 Jake: are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way. Welcome to JKM podcast. The longest... running New York Jets podcast ever, ever, ever. I'm Jake, and joining me the first time in a long time, but for 183 times, is my good friend, a very sad, sad man on a sad, sad day. Justin, Justin, how you doing today? Not sad at all. I love how you've come around on this one. So, first of all- I came around before it happened. First of all, apologize. For what? Apologize. To who? To everybody. About what? Because we said we were gonna do a podcast two weeks ago and we didn't do it. Justin: Really? Yup! Jake: And then we could have done one last week, but you rather go eat donuts. Who wouldn't? Yeah, so you ate donuts instead of doing a crack-fire. I rex-wined it. Yeah, you rex-wined it. He can't even eat the donut. He ate a donut like you ate, and he would die. No. He would just die. No, the band inside him might snap. It would snap, and he would die. So it has been a while. Things have happened. At least we have something to talk about. Justin: We have a few things to talk about. We have three things to talk about. That's it, our agenda has three things. It says, Reva schedule draft. Jake: That's right. That's it. So, we, this one, strap it in. Strap it on and stick it up your bunghole. Strap it on. Because it's going to be a long. Strap it on. Strap it on. Because you just got fucked. I did? See what I did there? No, I didn't like that. Alright, so let's talk about it. Big news. Let me just lay out what happened. So, as we've been talking about for a long time, the rumors of the trade with the 10 and big buccaneers have been going on for many months. And it came down and was executed yesterday. We all knew it when the Jets announced that the Bucks, because everybody kept saying, there's no way the Bucks are going to do this until they can actually get their hands on him and see him physically. Make sure he's okay, have a physical. And negotiated deal with him. Yeah, but that's the piece that's. They both took two seconds, but yes, so negotiate and so anyway, so it came down the Jets announced We'll allow them to go down. You just knew it. Everybody said at that point Listen, there's no way they'd even let him talk unless they have a full Full trade in in all set up. So then it was like two hours later They announced the trade had happened. The trade is this so Rivas to the Bucks Jets get there first this year, which is the 13th pick, and then they get a conditional fourth next year, which will go up to a third if Revis is on their roster on the third day of the season. Right. I love that. Like third day. Third day of the NFL calendar season,
03:00 Jake: which is in April or March. Is it? I thought it was the third day of the regular season. No, no, no, no. Oh, okay. Third day of the calendar season. Season. Okay, so, and he- Which is weird, cause he could get cut. And he assigned a no guarantee, $96 million, $16 million a year, six year contract. Which you know what that means. Well, hold on, which is interesting, absolutely no guarantee, although he's being paid as I was watching. I have some- if there's a fuck you segment today, I have a couple. But as I was watching ESPN break it down, one of the things they said today was, listen, he basically got a $10 million bonus this year, meaning he was gonna get six, he's now getting 16, Revas. So the question is why would Revas do this? Because he got 10 million bucks this year. So like he went from getting six, they even brought in the income tax. Tampa Bay, Ford has no income tax. So he went from making 6 million with probably a 40% income tax, right? So bringing home whatever, to making 16 million with zero. So it's actually more millions than even that. So, but there's no guarantees. So if he gets cut at any point, he literally could be cut. Now, of course, they're not going to give up these picks and then cut him. And even for next year. They're not gonna cut him either. They could cut him in year three. No, but what? Or renegotiate the contract down into signing closes. Justin: That's what's gonna have to happen. Because you know him, and at some point he'll either... He'll come back all the way, and he'll be the reavis of old, and he'll have a great season, either this year or next, and he'll be like, Fuck this non-guaranteed bullshit. I love this 16 million a year, but you better guarantee that shit over the next four and they're gonna sit and they're gonna Hope and he's gonna hold out Jake: So yeah, there'll be a holdout. So let's not do prediction. Let's talk Jets football Let's go give me your thoughts. What do you think? Well, because you actually between the time we talked about this before and now you've changed your mind So the podcast is so old that you've actually changed your mind. Yeah, so did change my mind Justin: Why don't you apologize for changing your mind? I don't have to apologize for changing my mind. I came to a rational Jake: Decision before before yesterday. I told you I know what I wanted. Oh, I'm not saying you'd haven't you know, he's turning red It's awesome. He's fucking turning red So tell the tell the tell the fans why you change your mind Justin: Well, I felt like he was gonna leave so I wanted to get something for him before he left one two They're better off You know their defense wasn't that bad last year without him. He basically played one game He played the opener. He got a concussion He missed the second game and then the third game he played and then the ACL like he barely played last year I don't think he played one full game, right? So and the defense was still I think eighth eighth or seventh. Yeah, and a lot of that had to do with the offense
06:01 Justin: and the special team sucking so I thought about it and said, you know, chromardi stepped up. He knew he had to and he did He was the number one. Kyle wilson's legit number two It's not like having Revas and Cremarti out there, but nothing is. He's coming off the ACL. He'll probably be back. I mean, I'm not doubting that he'll be like, you know, 98% of Dorell Revas. Like, almost immediately. I'm pretty sure he will be. Um, but he's just such a pain in the ass with this contract bullshit, and such a distraction. And that's what's killed this team over the last couple years, the distractions and the... I don't feel like he's ever been a... He's never been a Wii guy. He's always been a Mii guy. And if Tom Brady can, you know... Take less for the team, and he always has. I just threw up a little on my mouth. He always has just to, you know, and he should be pissed the fuck off, because they didn't sign his guy Welker back. He's like, oh, I'll take last. We signed some guys, we signed Wilker. And then they didn't. The Jets got something out of this. They got the 13th pick. First time since 2000 that a team has two of the first 13 picks. Jake: So do you remember a funny fact? Do you remember what we picked him at? Justin: 14 or 15? 14. We traded up a bunch of spots together. Jake: I'm just saying we got one better pick. Justin: Yeah, right. Six years later. Sure. You know, as a player on the field, I love him. Oh yeah. As a guy off the field, I really can't stand him at this point. I'm really angry with him a little bit. Keep going, I'll let you vent a little. Not a vent, it's just, you know, if you make statements like I want to be a Jeff for the rest of my career, then make that happen. Like, don't... This wasn't all the Jets like it wasn't It wasn't I don't think he would assign that that deal with the Jets and Nor do I think the Jets would have wanted to sign that deal with him because it would have just meant meant holding out I mean he did sign a six-year 96 million dollar deal which equates to six one year 16 million dollar deals Because that's what it is. Every single year, the Bucks could cut him or he can hold out. So that's how it would have played out with the Jets. He would have held out next year, the year after, or whenever. Secondly, I think you like got seven. No, whatever. The Jets are in... in dire need of more players. And last year, they played without this guy and they played on defense and they played okay. The offense was what killed them last year. Their offense and their special teams. So if they can get a little healthier, pick, I know what we'll talk about the draft.
09:02 Justin: I know what I want them to do in the draft and it's offense written all over it. and You know, get something of some value for the sky that I feel is gonna leave anyway. You gotta do it. Especially in this season. This one year where you have this sort of window to sort of fuck up. It's like a fuck up window. You know, Sanchez is on his last legs, Rex is on his last legs. It's like, why keep the sky around for one year when you could get a 13th overall pick? I mean, I have a little higher hopes for the season than you do. But the 13th overall pick this year, third round pick next year, and you know, the way that the charts, you know, there's all those charts for how to draft value. We actually got more value then. than the Vikings got for Percy Harvin even though the Vikings got three picks and we only got two our 13th pick has a lot more value than the 20 some odd pick that they received in the first round because the third is the third and whatever. So I feel like we got good value for the guy especially since he's coming off an injury you don't know you really don't. Even though the science is so good these days that Adrian Peterson can do what he's doing. And you know, RG3. We always talk about how RG3 is going to come back. But if you're a basketball fan and you're, you know, Derek Rose had the ACL tear last year in the playoffs for the Bulls. And it's been a full year and he's not back. And he's not coming back this season. He missed the entire season. It is a very, you know, it is a very tough injury to come back from and Adrian Peterson made it look very easy So people think oh No big deal. This is not Not a hundred percent that he's gonna be the same player I I feel like he'll be pretty darn close if not the same but it's You know, that's a risk. Especially in the last year of his deal where if he doesn't look good, he's still gonna want the money. He's still gonna want the 16 million dollars even if he doesn't look as good as he has looked in the past. I mean, this is one of the best players in the history of our franchise and he's now gone. So that part is a little sad, I'm a little upset. There's like this whole process that you have to go through. Are you in acceptance? Not really. I'm more angry. And it's... The anger is directed more at him. That's the first stage by the way. It's more directed at him than the Jets. I feel like the Jets did what they had to do. Not really happy with Woody, but I feel like Idzik so far has impressed me. with what he has done. I'm sure Rex is pissed. He's sitting there as a lame duck taking his best player away. But he was a lame duck before the sink happened. Yeah, but now he's like,
12:01 Justin: I'm sitting here and you're taking my best player away, and I'm a lame duck, you're not even gonna give me a shot. I just wonder if they're gonna allow him in the draft room. Jake: I wonder if they're gonna allow him in the draft room. Justin: They might not. Jake: I mean, if you're gonna do this to Rex, if you're gonna be able to be like, listen, you are so on your last legs, why even let him choose the guy who's gonna come in next season? Why let him choose his Laundry? Justin: It is a mistake though to count him out. He is a good coach. Jake: Here you go. All right, so can I have a little, can I have some mic time here? I'll just go to sleep. Alright, so as a huge huge Rivas fan huge fan of the Jets I'm very bummed that when I stood there last year with in in Canton watching Curtis Martin Get you know in Cantonized I said the next time I could possibly be here would be Rivas. Right? As a jet fan, I look at the current roster and I look at the people who have retired in the last five years and I'm like, the next time I could possibly be sitting here watching a jet go in is Darryl Rivas. So having that dream and having one of the best players or in his position of his time that will be a history book mention. not on your team anymore is a bummer. That being said, I'll tell you, because I'm going to tell you a funny story, turn it around. So you know who's very upset about this? No. My daughter. My eight-year-old daughter is very upset. She said she wanted to find the person who owns, who runs the bucks. and put them down, I think she said. She's eight. Put them down? What does that mean? She said, like, put them in the sand or something. She was really, really upset. Because she too felt, even as a little fan, you know, girl fan, whatever, she doesn't really get the game. But she knows this player. We have pictures of this player that she had on her wall for a year and a half. Like, this is an important player to the Jets. So to lose him is tough. But here's the thing. What I like about this is, it's proving that, and this is the way I explain it to my daughter, so maybe this will help people out there. She said, I don't get it, you know, I'm upset, whatever. I said, here's the deal. Let's say you don't have a home. I'm trying to put it in terms as she gets. You have no food, you have no clothes, you have no home. But in your hand, you have a bright, shiny diamond. It's worth a lot of money. No food, no clothes, no home, bright shiny diamond worth in your hands. You gotta sell the diamond. That's it. You got to. It's not even a choice. We can't keep the diamond and be the team we want to be, to be the team that wins the Super Bowl. Because right, let's go back to the goal. Only goal win the Super Bowl again. That's it. There's no other fucking goals out there It's win the Super Bowl the only way to rebuild this team to have a shot have a shot
15:00 Jake: Not next year, but the year after the year after is to get in new better faster players and to rebuild this team. I hate it. I hate the concept of rebuilding year over year, but we are at the low of lows. We are literally at the low of lows. There are so many wants that this is the time you gotta sell your diamond to put a roof over your head. So that's the way I explained to her. Again, it hurts. Here's the thing, if this works, this is a great gamble, because if this works, it'll be very clear whether it works or not. If we're back in the AFC Championship in two, three years, three, four years, because you got a small window. Remember, even if we went and got the greatest guy in the world, we got a window. We thought we had a window with Sanchez. We had it. It was the first two years. That window closed. There's another window that's going to open up. It's going to open up in two or three years, maybe four at the max. That'll be our window. And it will start because of this. This trade. So I think we'll look back at this trade and what it's about to do in this draft. And this will be something that we will look back as a huge mistake. Or we look back as, oh my god, that's the thing that happened. This is a huge, momentous piece of Jets history. Look around, figure out where you are today, write it down in a piece of paper, because this will either be. Look back as one of the worst things that ever did to the Jets. Like I'm trying to think of. Oh, there are many. Or this will be the thing. I can both see the Jets being miserable in four years and being like, look what you did. I could also see the Jets hoisting the trophy and being like, look what you did. That was the smartest thing that we ever did. And it felt so bad, but it was the right thing to do at the time. And this is it. So now, we're back to rebuilding mode, we're back to being fans of a team that's going to struggle, that's going to show moments of greatness, but then, you know what? I mean, I was at two AFC Championship games. You know, you've been a fan for a billion years. I was at two of them, two years in a row. That's the 49ers, two years in a row, right? They were at the NFC champs, and then they got to the Super Bowl, and then they lost it. Chance of them getting back, I know it's like, oh, this is a great team. It's tough. You got this small window. You got to get into that window when you can. So we're building it up. It's going to be a two, three year build. The only thing that really bugs me is this whole Rex Ryan. Like if you're going to cut it, cut it. Don't do this like half cut thing. I don't now looking back, I don't know why they kept Rex because everything is pointing to it. Maybe I'm dead wrong, but I'm usually right. There's no there's it doesn't just. Nobody, everybody in the world's like, the picture is, you're gone, dude, no matter what you do. You win the Super Bowl, fine. Like, but you're pretty much gone. You're not a part of what the team is building. We're not building the team for you. We're building the team for the next guy. So like, it just feels like if you're gonna do that,
18:01 Jake: then just get rid of him. Just get rid of him now. What's the point? We could have hired a coach. You know what I mean? . I don't think that come. I mean I know the Bears just Justin: after going 10 and 6 and missing out on the class because they switched GMs the year before and then he was a coach under a new GM, but Jake: I don't know. I mean... But the writing is on the wall. No one in the world hires... The only thing that hiring Idzik was, you can't fire Rex now. And you have to deal with the situation that we're gonna put you in. Justin: and you They can't say that. No, I can Jake: I agree. They. Justin: to have a good pun. And to not K. and how the Niners win right I. I mean not sure they changed a little bit Kaepernick but. They run the ball they. Aren't super flashy and they got a little flashy with Kaepernick but because running. And they played good field position and good defense it's very hard to score on them when you have to drive yards. Very hard to score in the Jets when you have to drive 80 yards. Jake: When you have to drive 30 yards, it's easier to. Score a touchdown. Or when you will phone right into your hands, you can run into the end zone. Yeah. Three times in 21 seconds. Easy enough. Justin: So I feel like a lot of the defense is is is going to be fine. the They have Harris, who's still good. They have Cormarti, Wilson, other Landry. These guys are good players. They signed a couple of veterans. They're fine. They're fine amid a linebacker.
21:00 Justin: Damara Davis will come around in second year. I mean, look, not many third round linebackers play very well in their first years. But then that's where you find a lot of, you know, Navarro Bowman was a third rounder for the Niners. He's now one of the best in the league. So like you find these guys, you coach them up, you get them better and that's that. David Harris was the second rounder. So it's not, like, these are like first round guys. It's not how linebackers work necessarily, especially in the middle linebacker position. So, you know, we'll see. I feel very confident in the fact that the defense will be fine. It's the offense that needs to come around. That's why I want to... Can we go to the draft and then the schedule? Let me talk about Revas. I just want to talk about the draft because I know exactly what I want them to do. Jake: I want to ask you, do you agree with my assessment that this is a... that now we just at the start of a new franchise and we now have a window to build it and make it work again. We have this... It's an open window. Justin: No, there's always an open window. So I don't feel that way. Okay. No. Because it's not like um... We're not the Patriots where there is a window. And it's called Now Until When Tom Brady Retires. But they've had that window open for 10 years. But that's what I'm saying. These windows aren't like, you know, so finite like that, right? Like there are windows for teams like that have older veteran guys. Jake: But I don't feel like there's... I feel like the window for the Ravens was last year and it was literally, they got through with and closing of that window and it closed and this year and next year they're gonna struggle they're gonna struggle for two years Justin: Yeah, I mean I think of teams like Denver, they have a window Yep Cause Peyton Manning is... Jake: No, I'm not saying our window starts today I'm saying we're now building to open it So like This year, window is shut. Justin: Yeah, but you and I have a little differing opinions on how they're going to do this year. Because you think they're going to be terrible. I don't think they're going to be. They're going to be terrible. Jake: Statistically, I don't think they're going to be terrible. Justin: Well, statistically means nothing wins losses. I feel like they're going to be in the same range they were last year. Yeah, I don't think they will be. I think they'll be better. but better by much like two games but one game I will give you I mean, I think spun last and 10 to 10 and 6 in
24:00 Justin: I feel like that's what got Tana Mound fired, more than anything. Tony Sperano. He was awful. That was one of the things you could do. You brought in a guy who's never coached quarterbacks, who played a head coach. As a defensive style right when he was the Dolphins they weren't like flashy offense they were let's win on defense, right? So you hire him as your offensive coordinator with a rookie but a young quarterback who needs help maturing and Needs to get past You know needs to grow not regress and you hire a guy who has no clue how to do that Agreed, not gonna argue. Can't argue that. Then you bring in Tebow to add to the circus and make it way worse than it has to be. So that's two. One, bad offensive coordinator who you hire seemingly because he knows how to run a trick play. Right. He was the head coach when a trick play was run. And then you hire a guy who knows how to run that trick. Doesn't know how to run that trick play. Runs the read option. Doesn't even run the Wildcat. Not Brad Smith. Tim Tebow. And then they got shot in the foot with injuries. I mean, your best player goes out in game one and then again in game three, Reavis. Holmes goes out. Keller plays not even half the season. Hill misses a bunch of games and he's a rookie. I mean they had nowhere to go with the ball on offense. And on defense they lose their best player and Puwah didn't really play either. So like they were missing like a lot of cornerstone guys. Jake: So between- You think that's a three game swing? Four game swing. Justin: Oh. Sprounow on his own is like a two game swing. Easy! Sprounow's won, Holmes is won, and Rebus is won. Literally no imagination. on offense and no ability to coach a guy up. I mean, Sanchez got so much worse worse and that should not have happened. It shouldn't have happened. I mean, I hear Tanneboum talk about it when because he's now in the media. He's like, look, I know the guy turned the ball over, but he also scored 32 touchdowns the year before. I didn't think this was gonna happen. Well how'd that happen? Well you put a coach in there who had no fucking clue what he was doing. Well and the head coach doesn't know. Why did he get fired immediately? Jake: And the head coach wants nothing to do with it. Well that's why he's also on the very big hot seat. He allowed that to happen. Justin: Well guess what, he hired a guy who is a real offensive coordinator who you can leave alone. Jake: Harbo in the middle of the season in a winning season on a Super Bowl season fires his head, his offensive coordinator in the middle of the season or towards the end. on a playoff push, fires him because he knows that shit's not going right.
27:03 Jake: Our head coach, old defense dude, I'm now going the other way, lets it happen and keep letting it happen, lets the circus. That guy should have been fired week six. Yep. Right? But they didn't. Justin: The problem was they didn't see... Baltimore didn't change any scheme. They just got rid of a personality that wasn't working. I feel like the Jets didn't have a scheme to build on. They couldn't have done anything. They could have gone back to. I feel like they could have done anything. What, would they have done? There's no one there. Anything was better. So they brought in a real offensive coordinator who can run an offense by himself. with his own system, whatever. They brought a different quarterback coach, so a new voice in Sanchez's year, which I think could be good. Jake: No but fumbles. No but fumbles. Justin: I feel like last year, you know, that six and ten... It's two years though. It's not one year. It's two years of... Last year was six and ten. The year before was eight and eight. I know. Again, they were eight and five. There was... There's a few little things in there that go your way. That's how it works. I mean, Miss field goal here, a block punt there. Jake: But now we're looking at a team that doesn't even remotely resemble any of those teams. That's fine. I mean, of those players, you talked about the players, Rivas, Scott, Keller, Puah. I mean, it's just like- Justin: There were a bunch of, I mean, a few of the guys you mentioned got old. And that's just like, okay, fine. We're better with Albert Scott. Jake: But we are now at a, very, very new team, Kenny, Kenny, really, really, I. My guess is this year, you know, they talk about the youngest team. We're going to trend young this year. Like we're going to be a very young team. A garage is going to throw the whole fucking chart off. He's the bet. Justin: No, we picked up some like Cologne's older, Barnes's older. A couple of guys we picked up were older. Dwan Landry's not a spring chicken. I thought he's younger than his brother. I thought he's the older brother. It's not like we picked up all these young bucks to just go out there. They're going to draft a lot of guys. They have a lot of draft picks. Jake: Who's the leader in the locker room this year? That's a good question. Um... The answer is nobody yet. Nobody you can identify. On offense you can say mangled. Yeah, probably mangled. Here's the thing. Here's another question for you. This is I'm interviewing you now. This is a podcast we're talking to the broadcast along. How is anybody gonna play for Mark Sanchez, if he's the starter, and Rex Ryan, who they think is literally out the door? Because they don't. Justin: I don't know. So they're not gonna play for him? No, they're gonna play for him. First off, they're playing for themselves, okay? Okay. So nobody wants to lose. Nobody's going out there saying, you know what, I'm gonna lose today. Because nothing's guaranteed. So no one's like, yeah, you know what? I wanna go two and 14. Don't you think that this team- Jake: Because that makes me look really good. Don't you think this team could collapse very quickly?
30:01 Jake: I feel like they're on a teetering edge. I think that the young guys, they'll be like, hey, we wanna play. No, I really don't. Justin: Cause I'm telling you that defense is never gonna be bad. It's never gonna be bad. He's too good of a defensive coach for the defense to be bad. It hinges on the offense. And you've got to just hope and pray that with a new system, with an offensive oriented, real quarterback style coach, with a healthy homes, a second year of Hill, curly maturing last year having to pick up a little slack, and we'll get to the draft in a minute, that they might have something to go with here. I mean, you can't forget that the kid did do what he did and the coach did what he did in the first two years. Jake: I don't forget it. But there are people who have a bright, it's like the, it's a flash. Sometimes your flash is young and sometimes your flash is old. Justin: It's fun and it's nice and you know, Matt Stafford gets big money in Detroit and that's all fun and dandy. But he doesn't want a playoff game yet. I know and we used to do this about, we used to do this about uh... Joe Flacco until he won the Super Bowl. No, we didn't. We always said Joe Flacco was the winner. I didn't think he's very good, but he wins in playoffs. He gets the playoffs every year and he wins. Yeah. Made three AFC Championship games in five years and he's won a Super Bowl. Jake: Here's the thing. What's what people have said about Sanchez and whether this is whether it's perception leading reality or reality leading perception. The thing that they keep saying that again, I think I denied for a good three years, is that he's mentally not strong. Not he's not a smart guy, he's a smart guy. That guy's freaking smart as a whip. He'd had great scores or whatever. But that he just can't take where he is and the pressure on him and that when he gets into a spiral, and you've seen this on the field, he gets into a spiral. I refuse to accept that. That Justin: He played one season of college football. Jake: This isn't a guy who had four seasons. Justin: Okay, so now you're making even better excuses for him. That he's still young. He is. Still has a lot of room to grow. So if a guy plays one year of college football. He's regressed backwards almost every year. And then plays... He's won four road playoff games. Yes I know. That's a lot. And what others Jake: like your dad would argue with you and say he had very little to do with the winning of those games. Still won. He didn't lose them. No last year he lost Justin: games. But he lost games in those rookie years too. Oh that Bill's game Jake: where he had five picks. Still. Justin: I hear you. I think it's foolish. I want him to succeed. To be so down on a foolish... Yeah, I'm saying I think it's foolish of you and a lot of Jets fans to think that
33:06 Justin: that a guy so young can't resurrect himself. Jake: I'm not saying he can't. I'm saying that the time for him to do that is becoming so minute. He had his chance to resurrect himself. It was last year. Justin: But why is a guy measured in four years? Quarterbacks play more than four years. Because this is a- And sometimes they don't win. Because- True Breeze didn't win last year. Jake: I understand, but- They didn't make the playoffs. Because he lost his head coach. Because here's why, because when you have a year where three rookie quarterbacks make the playoffs, shit happens. Right, so then people start going. Justin: You know what also happens when rookie quarterbacks make playoffs? It means their team likely, and you know this for, you know, the Colts and the Redskins. They play shit schedules. You wanna know why the number one overall pick made it to the playoffs? Because he played a number one overall picks team schedule, which means he was in shitty shitty Division playing the worst teams in the conference. I mean there's reasons why teams can turn around quickly You play a last place schedule, you get games against, you know, you get to play the Jaguars twice in that division. That's always fun. Right? I mean and you also, you know, you don't have to play Denver on the road. You get to play, I don't know, the Chiefs. Who are the number who get the number one overall pick this year because they've been terrible for two years in a row. You don't have to play Pittsburgh. You get to play the Browns. That's how it works. Yeah, I know. I know how it works. Jake: I hear you. Justin: So it's fun to go to Baltimore, but it's much more fun to go to Cleveland. Jake: I've been to, I've been to, I've been to Cincy, the Cincy House. All right. So I hear you and I want to be a believer and you have six months to convince me. Justin: I don't need to convince you, convince yourself. No, I want to be convinced. I don't think they're gonna be as bad as people think they are. ESPN has them ranked 31 out of 32. I do not feel they're 31 out of 32. Jake: But here's the thing, it's just the evidence is... pounding up and I feel like the tolerance level that the team, the owner, the new GM... You don't know anything about what the team feels. Justin: The guys on the team. Jake: They were talking shit about him last year? Another source says that... That's bullshit. Justin: That's bullshit. That's all bullshit. No, you can say that. Jake: So this source, a manish meta can shove it up his own ass. That's correct. I'm saying that his window, his window, Sanchez's window on the New York Jets. His window on the Jets is certainly closing. Is very closing. I mean, I'm surprised that he made, he was benched last year, benched.
36:01 Jake: Benched? I think he's got, he's got a very tight window. And then he's with a head coach who's got a small window. So the outlook, if you shake your magic, magic eight ball outlook, not so good. So I just... Crazier things have happened. Crazier things have happened. Alright, well let's go. So you don't want to talk to my schedule first? No, let's go to the draft. I guess the schedule is going to be next week anyway. Alright, we'll come back to schedule. Alright, let's talk about the draft. Justin: No, no, no, no. It's week one which is fun. Well, that is fun. Let's talk about the draft. I know exactly what I want the Jets to do. So in the first round so we have two picks in the first round. I know exactly what I want. I Jake: Know the players the last year that we had that we had that we had and picked two players in the first round And what are those players names? Testing me yeah There was that one year that we had the two things Justin: Didn't have a million the Keller year. It was a Galston and Keller No, I think it was Goldstinger. I think it was mangled and... No, no, no, no. Because Keller we traded up to get in the first round. So whoever was a rookie would Keller. Was it? No, it was D-Brick and mangled. No, I'm telling you Keller. Keller was a first round pick, but he wasn't ours. We traded up to get him. We traded up into the first round to get him to get Keller. I could pull it up. And I'm pretty sure I know which draft it was. Um, I'm pretty sure it was the 2008 draft, is my guess. 2008 draft, let's see. Yeah, the Jets picked 6th and they picked Vernon Golston, and then they picked 30th and they picked Dustin Keller. So, there you go, fuck nuts. Because I know what I'm talking about. Actually, what's interesting is that this is the first year since I think it was the year 2000 where a team has two picks in the top 13 and that team was... The New York Jets. Oh really? Year 2000 the Jets I think had four first round picks they picked Shawn Ellis and John Abraham back to back at 1213 for good picks hmm and John Abraham became Nick mangled, so that's yeah pretty good They then picked Chad Pennington at 18 and Anthony Bette at 27. Oh, I remember that. That was a pretty good draft. Four guys who pretty decent players. Jake: Name the Jets. Since Rex Ryan has been the head coach, name the Jets that he has drafted that have been the Pro Bowl. I'll give you a minute.
39:00 Justin: I don't know if there have been. There haven't been any. None. Zero. Jake: It's not good. It's almost why I don't... Again, if you want him to take the reigns and run this team for the next three years... It's not him, it's Izzik. I know, but it's Izzik's time. Okay, so let's go. I know what you want to have happen. So first of all, what's the biggest... I want to ask you a few questions. What's the biggest, one biggest need that jets have this year? The position. Justin: I don't think that you can even say. Jake: Well, no, the biggest. There's like a scale and the scale is one to 10, the biggest need. You clearly don't think it's quarterback. Justin: No, what I'm gonna say is gonna be different than what most people would say. Most people think it's quarterback. No, I don't think it's quarterback. I think it's offensive line, okay? Jake: That's the biggest need. Correct. It's not a different maker. It's not a wide receiver. It's not a corner replaced Grievous. You asked me the biggest, biggest need. Justin: I'm saying yes, the biggest need. And I think it's offensive line, because right now you're going into the season with Vlad Dukas and Willy Cologne starting. Okay. And I think you can make do with... Sanchez, I think you can make do with, you know, homes and curly and hill as your top three receivers. You can make do with that. What you can't make do with, with, you know, the running backs that we have and the quarterback that we have is a shoddy offensive line. Okay, so here's here we go. Let's go. So here's my deal. We got 9 and 13, right? So there's two guards. Yeah. All right. There's Chance Womack from Alabama. Okay, and there's Jonathan Cooper from North Carolina. This is gonna get a little weird but stick with me. We picked 9 and 13 if and only if neither of those two guys have been picked before 9 then we need to pick Taevon Austin the wide receiver. Jake: out of West Virginia. They're saying Percy Harvin, 2.0. Justin: He's our Deshaun Jackson, he's our Percy Harvin, he's got to touch the ball 15 times. So he's an offensive weapon that can play all over the place. A little short, but who gives a shit faster than everybody on the field. Jake: Yeah, the same thing. His one drawback is he's small and then he might not last in the NFL. He'll be fine. Okay. Justin: In the slot. Slot guy go deep guy run some trickery chicanery out of the shotgun with them guy so I Really want him as the playmaker Jake: So what you're saying is you want one of the guards? But if both of them are still on the board Justin: Both of them are still on the board at nine take Austin and then let wait till 13 and then one of them will be there one of the guards, okay I prefer, and this is based purely on their school, I prefer Chase Warmack because he played in Alabama.
42:02 Justin: And if you played Alabama, they run the ball up people's ass, they win national championships. the pedigree's gotta be there if you're gonna be a, you know... a top prospect out of Alabama on the offensive line. But people say, you know, I don't know because I don't watch enough, you know, never seen Jonathan Cooper in North Carolina play. To me, it's whatever, they're a guard. Yeah. So I would like to have one of those guards. Starting with either Vlad Dukas or Willie Cologne. Which ones are they? Chance Wormack or Jonathan Cooper. Okay, yeah, because Cooper's the other one that's getting a lot of. So one of those two guys, I feel like if neither have been picked in the top eight, meaning if it gets to us at nine, don't bother, pick Austin, and then wait till 13. and pick Cooper or Warmack because 10, 11, 12, the odds of two of them going within those three picks Jake: are slim, right? I will say the consensus from the- What's the consensus? This is defensive end and it's- I don't like it. It's all over Jones or Mingo or Jordan. Those are like, everybody's saying those are the guys. Justin: You can get- a guy to rush the passer whenever I feel. These first round hybrid, linebacker, whatever. I don't want this Mingo character. To me, he feels like, what's his face? The guy that we got from the Bills, Mabin. Why draft a guy in the top 10 that you can't play every down? when that side of the ball is on the field. Yeah, to me. Like if you're playing, if you're picking a defensive guy and he's gonna be a linebacker, why should you pick a specialist? That doesn't make any sense to me. So for me, I want to focus on offense. I want to pick Tavon Austin who I think is the best playmaker in the draft and one of the two guards because then you'll have mangled and dbrick as your anchors. Austin looked pretty decent last year at right tackle he's gonna get better he's young and then you can have cologne ducasse fight it out for one of the guard spots cologne's gonna get he'll win and he'll get hurt and then you'll have to go with to cough. But get one of these rookies in there, because if you could shore that up, then you'll be able to run, and you'll be able to protect the quarterback, and the offense looks a little better. Do cost and cologne as your guards. Clones can get hurt, remember. So then you got to cost and a backup. So now you got two backups on the field a. Okay, so that's my thinking I want the playmaker and I want
45:04 Justin: one of the two guards I Know guard sounds silly at 13, but I don't care Mango sounded silly at 25 that's worked out plenty fine deep Berkeley picked high to war Yeah, tackle tackles go in the top tackles go number one I mean that's what's gonna happen this year. Everyone has one of these two tackles going number one. Let's talk quarterbacks. What do you want? Ugh. I think you're fucking retarded if you pick a quarterback this year. It's completely antithetical to your whole thing of this is a one year... If you're gonna pick a quarterback, then you're basically saying... Well, we're not gonna get rid of Rex. You should not pick a quarterback if you think you're, if you think your coaches are out of the door. Jake: The only way we pick a quarterback this year, well, I mean, you know, the year that the Green Bay Packers picked, Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers. They also picked another quarterback. Justin: Yeah, but they picked Aaron Rodgers in the first round to be their quarterback as they knew Favre. Because Favre retired every year. I know. And Favre was not Sanchez. Favre was like all-time great. Jake: There's also a theory of the Patriots, which you pick a quarterback every year. What you do with them, you stick them on your bench. Justin: You don't pick a quarterback every year in the first round. Jake: No, I'm not saying the first round. and This is not a round, first, quarterbacks will go on the first round because they're the only ones there. And there's so many teams between one and eight and nine that need quarterbacks, right? I'm looking at a mock draft Justin: that has like four different guys mocking. Yep. and Buffalo's where the quarterback start which is eight nobody Kansas City they're not picking a quarterback. They have that quarterback the Jaguars aren't gonna pick a quarterback either Why wouldn't the Jaguars put a quarterback? Because they just picked one in the first round and like the top ten two years ago And then they signed Chad Henney. I don't think they're picking the quarterback I think you could be wrong. The Raiders aren't gonna pick the quarterback, I don't think. Jake: No, they just made a big trade for Castle. Not Castle, sorry. I- of the That's his name, from Seattle. Green Bay? Flint, yeah, that's it. I was thinking Matt, I got caught in that. Justin: The Eagles aren't picking a quarterback. That I think you're wrong on, but okay. I don't think they will. I think they will. I think- The Lions certainly are not. Cleveland will either, they just picked one. Why? Jake: Cleveland will pick one. Justin: Arizona, I don't know if they will either. They just traded for. Jake: Yeah, but that's not a long term answer. I will pick one. Arizona, I pick one. Justin: So that's where you might see some court. And the bills, I think will pick a court. Jake: They believe in Colorado? Yes, not. That's just a. Okay. Yes.
48:00 Justin: The interestingly enough, you know, most people think Gino Smith is the first yes quarterback pick but there is I'm looking at the CBS Sports line the CBS Sports NFL mock and they have four guys like next to each other and Jake: Pat Kerwin is one of them. He has Gino Smith being picked by the by the Bills, right? But please don't say it's Barkley going to... Dane Bruegler. Justin: Bruegler has Ryan Nassib being picked by the Bills because his head coach was... is now the head coach of... so his head coach at Syracuse is now the head coach at Buffalo. That makes sense to me. Three out of the four of these guys have us picking Mango. Mango is like the consensus pick. And the other one has us picking Tabon Austin. And I like him. He has us picking Austin at nine and has Mango lasting till 13. And they hit Mango. And I was picking Mango. Okay. I don't like Mango either way. Jake: He's too light. Here's my feeling. I only know what I don't want. I don't want a quarterback in the first round. Justin: Me neither. Jake: And if I see Barkley, I saw a friend of mine was like, oh, I was like, nothing could make nothing. Barkley's on nobody's first round. A guy who gets described as Chad Pennington. from USC, we just got done with the USC, or we'll be done with the USC quarterback. I'm like, that would be the worst mistake ever. So that I don't want to see. I agree with you on the, I mean, we've picked defense pretty much every year now in the first round. Justin: How about giving the guy a little something to work with? Jake: And again, if my theory is correct, this isn't about this year, it's about next year. and the year after. Third year he's still not enough to take over the first spot until someone gets hurt Justin: But he's he's not a number one corner and that's fine. Okay, he was picked on a team Jake: with Reavis and Kramarti on it. I understand. So like He's why waste the first round pick on him then because Rex Ryan couldn't have enough corners. Okay. Well, okay Justin: He's a starting cornerback in the NFL. We'll see. He's a starting cornerback. He is now He was last year. The default though. That's not like you win the job. He has a default job. Who's going to win a job over Cremardium Revus? Jake: So why pick one? anyway, go on. Next year was Wilkerson. Wilkerson. You're going to say he's not on the cusp? Wilkerson is last year has he is the cusp of being a playmaker. Justin: Yes. He's on the cusp of being a. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
52:28 Jake: And one of these guys slips me, one of the big ones that everybody has us taking, like in the second round, is EJ Manuel, quarterback. Right, Florida State guy. At that point, I could be convinced. Not a guy who's starting this year, not even gonna, you know, he's a guy, if Sanchez has three more butt fumbles, week six, to throw in this guy and say, all right, let's see what you got, right? ... ... We haven't been graded second round quarterbacks. Justin: I mean, the hardest part is that, like you said, you feel like this is a band aid year. So you don't want to pick a guy... Remember, Morningwig has a system. It's a West Coast offense. So if you're grading out a quarterback and you're saying, this guy's a read option quarterback, he's not a West Coast offense quarterback then Are you to take him anyway? Are you basically saying, fuck our system? We're picking a quarterback that doesn't fit? That doesn't seem right. Jake: I I honestly think if it's in the second or third round, Justin: if there's a value, I'm not even saying EJ manual doesn't fix. I don't know from a hole in the head. I never saw that really play. Me neither. You know what I want? I want us to trade back up into the first round and pick Tyler Ifert late. Like who's Tyler Ifert? I don't know. Ty Dann and Notre Dame. Oh, Ty Dann. He was really good. Oh, he's really good. If we could get three first round picks and one of them is Tyler Ifert, the other one's Austin and the other one's one of these guards, I'd be super happy. Again, this is,
54:02 Jake: you don't get this opportunity very often to get this, these top picks in one year. And in a draft class that everybody, I mean, everybody's saying it's just so, it's like it's a weak quarterback draft. I mean, poor quarterbacks are out this year. They must feel like, really? We're just like chopped meat out here, chopped liver. Justin: Well, a lot of it also has to do with like the teams at the top. Look, Kansas City, they made the decision that this was a shit. quarterback draft because they went out and traded for one with the first overall pick because you basically say all right There's either a quarterback out here Who's gonna be a franchise quarterback and I'm gonna take them where there's not and they basically said there's not That's Andy Reid. Yeah who coaches up quarterbacks pretty well You know he takes guys and makes them into things made Kevin Cobb look good sold them for Much, you know, all right. That's why I don't I don't know if there's gonna be a quarterback picked I don't even know if the Bills will pick one. Maybe the Cardinals will pick one Cardinals maybe Cleveland will pick one. I don't know but they just picked the guy in the first round last year That is a real smack in the face If you're gonna pick a quarterback in the first round, then the next year you're gonna pick another one in the first round. That's really fucking up. That's being bad. I know they changed their whole everything around. Like they have new GM, new codes. Jake: I just don't know if I see the Jaguars. I think the Jaguars definitely pick one. Justin: But they're the number two pick. I don't think they will. Jake: Oh, so here's another stat for you. Last 23 home games for the Buccaneers. For the Bucks. 19 of them blacked out. Yeah. I mean, this is a team that needed this splash. A little star power. Their secondary went from nothing to something. Justin: Oh, yeah. It's something and a half. They got Wilson and they had Baron from the draft last year. So two safeties. And now Rivas, I mean, he covers half the field himself. Jake: Yeah, so here's a question for you going back to leave this thing wait to game one well game one as possible So we'll bring back the schedule this kid will be there forever. So we'll come back to it We got the draft coming up on Thursday night Justin: If again, I think we've done this before if you really still haven't even said a name of a player you're always to me You're like you better prepare. You better like know your shit. No a guy know this and know that What are you- Come on, throw fucking names out there. I just threw three names out there! You threw shit! You threw quarterbacks we weren't gonna pick in the first round. Jake: I told you what I don't want to have happen. Who we picking with number nine. Justin: Who do I think we're picking? Who do you want us to pick? Oh, who do you want us to pick? Well, I told you what I wanted to happen. If I was the gem, what I said would happen. Austin 9 if none of the guards already went and one of the guards at 13 and if it looks like I have to move up to Get one of those guards that might if I can't get either of them fine. I'll settle for one of these linebacker guys. I
57:03 Justin: Don't know I don't know You're always like, be ready, prepare, get your shit ready, cause I'm gonna ask you questions. Jake: Well I have been, that's exactly what's happened. I've been asking you questions. You're the broadcaster, I'm the podcaster. I have so many mixed feelings cause it's like, I have tons of names, but I just don't, like they all seem, it just seems like such a fucked up year. I just, I agree with you here. I've told you what I want. I think offense, and I want. I want playmakers, a three year out playmakers. Cause I think this is a time to get those guys cause we're going to be back in the hunt in two to three years. This is not the year, so it's not. And I think they picked defense long enough now. I mean, the running back course is Boosh this year. Like, Glacy's like the guy, but that's it. The quarterback, the quarterbacks are Boosh. Uh, I mean guards in the 9th and 13th? Oh, okay. I don't see anything wrong with that. That's guards land. Well, I don't see anything wrong. Justin: I mean, a lot of the experts, the so-called experts, say you don't pick a guard that high. Fuck off. If you need a guard, pick them. And if they're gonna be good, pick them. If you need one, and these are gonna be good players... Look, those are the guys who you can keep. The offensive lineman. Because they're not flashy, they're not divas, they're all... Mangold and D-Brick aren't going anywhere. They're playing their whole career with the Jets. They're gonna be good until they're old. They're no longer good. Guess what? Offensive linemen are good when they're old still. They're good investments, offensive linemen. They protect the quarterback, they let you run the ball. It's so underrated. I see no reason why you wouldn't pick a guard nine or 13. Jake: There's just nobody in the draft that's like totally exciting me. Even all these defensive ends. Justin: No RG3, there's no Andrew Locke. Jake: Even the defensive ends. There's no fancy sauce. Justin: No fancy sauce. There is no fancy sauce. So go for value. I'm telling you, Austin and then Warmack. Austin, Warmack. Jake: All right, well, we'll come back. So here's what I was gonna say. The draft, so this year, they're doing the same things they did three years ago. We're actually gonna go, are we going? We're going on Saturday, right? Justin: Oh yeah, Saturday. Jake: We're gonna go down to the Jets facility. Right. Right. I got my ticket printed out. Draft day, whatever. But they're doing a draft Thursday night in the first round. So which will be big for the Jets this year. Friday night, they're doing another two rounds. Is that right? They do second and third? Justin: I don't know. And then Saturday, they do the rest. This is you are. Okay. Jake: So Thursday night. Well, time does it start. It starts at like 7.30 and it goes for about three hours. It's going to go till like midnight. No, because it's less time.
1:00:00 Jake: It's actually not bad. I went to the draft last year. I was at the draft at Radio City. Justin: I'm actually going to have to watch this one. Yes, we will. Well, I'm happy it's Thursday and not. Friday doesn't interfere with my next playoff schedule. Jake: There you go. But then Friday is another one and then Saturday. So I'm just saying that we might, if there's something fun that happened, we might actually come in and do a little something on Friday and talk about what happened the first round. Might have to. Justin: All I'm saying is. Bring on week one bitches You know would be so fun. Do you know what? Here's a question for you Jake: What are you waiting for or against him at this point against I guess you want to get her for him? I know I don't want anyone to get hurt. You don't want to get hurt. No, why would I root for that? That's stupid Yeah, I don't want him to play well So you just wanted to be average? Yeah, I want to come out on top of this. Yeah, well you get your draft. That's the thing, if he turns to the greatest quarterback ever, you still got top pick for him. You couldn't have, I mean, you got a top pick. You got 13 picks. That's still a good pick. Yeah, it's a very good pick. But the guy who you pick can suck. Yeah. I just came around it and in my head I just said, once I got to the fact that this player was not going to be on our team in 2014, no matter what, it was never going to happen. You just feel like, well then you might as well get value for him. You may as well get something. Because he's not going to be on your team. So he was gone to me. So... Justin: Week one. Yes there could be like a moment a thing a Spark that happens. Okay, it's Jake: You're not gonna think this just to go through again. All right, but week one. Yeah Justin: There's the possibility Oh God of a late game Situation where the Jets need to score Jake: Okay, and by some stroke of luck Sanchez Throws towards Reavis over his head hill picks and goes for touchdown. I don't think he'll be guarding Hill Justin: I think he'll be guarding home. So okay, but just by some like a double move or a pump or something They just beat Reavis like that like I like leave him on an island I like it. There's the potential for this magical moment to happen in week one Jake: But there's also this potential for this tragic moment to happen in week one where it's like and he's a big dad's fan. Justin: I put the over under at one and a half for picks. Jake: The lines already out, it's probably already moved. andurches.
1:03:16 Justin: I'm gonna be like plus 1300 Jake: I'll throw I'll throw 20 bucks on that Here but here's the thing as a jet van You have to just say I'm what it's like gonna be one year of scouting It's gonna be a scouting year and every way wouldn't that be fun in week one? Justin: Every way having to be across down to the and just go Adam. Jake: Well, it would be better if it was the pick that we got. So if it was, if we tape on Austin, he's covering. He's gonna be guarding him. Well, let's say it's because of the style or whatever. We line up in a weird thing. So we end up guarding Taven, who we picked with the 13th pick. Oh, it'd be so much fun to just go with Adam. He does a double move. Revus slips and then the guy runs right by him for touchdown, game over. Oh. Justin: That'll just be like a season could end. Yeah, that's it cuz I mean you're going on you're going on a short week to New England the next week anyways The beginning of our season just sucks. They did not the schedule makers didn't do us any favors with the there's a section Half of the season there's there's a section. They're calling the gauntlet. It's calling it the gauntlet It starts October 7th at Atlanta at night Which I'm going to. That's that. That's a Monday night. Yep. Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh. New England. At Cincinnati. New Orleans. That's a five game losing streak waiting to happen, to happen. Jake: But here's the beautiful thing. Beautiful thing is going to the season our expectation, unlike two years ago when they were so high our expectation levels are so low now. We have to change our opener. Oh, can we? Justin: We have to get rid of can't wait and we have to get rid of expectations. They're always going to be high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Jake: I'm going to just overdo it and say, expectations always be low. Get used to it. Not always. So bad. All right. Justin: Never again will they be. Jake: All right. That's it for the podcast. We'll be back whenever we're back. Well, we'll definitely come back and wrap up the draft after next week if we don't come in for Friday and do a special segment. If crazy, crazy. How about this? You guarantee that if your picks exactly happen, you have to podcast on Friday. How's that? Guarantee it. If the picks that I predict will happen? Yeah. If you get your dream picks. Sure. All right.
