03 Jake: This is episode 77 of the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Thursday, August 5, 2010. RIVAS holds out. Justin: of the women. Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom Podcast. As always on this side of the digital aisle, it's Jake. For 77 times it's me. And for the 77 times joining me across digital aisle in all his glory of some t-shirt I can't read Is Justin hi do it Justin? I'm doing great. It is a Justin: Italia t-shirt that my sister got for me when she spent a semester abroad in Where the hell was she somewhere in Italy Florence nice. Yep. Nice. Yep. I represent Florence, Italy Jake: They see you roll in yeah, they hate Alright, well we got some news to talk about that the training camp has started. It has. It has. Justin: It's a wonderful time of the year. We got about five weeks now until the regular season starts and it's starting to buzz. There's really a, you know, the fantasy football stuff is starting up. You're seeing the magazines on the newsstands. you and people are starting to talk about it in the office. It is a fun, fun time and I can't wait until, you know, I think it's five weeks from today, which is Thursday, we are recording this, to watch the Vikings take on the Saints. Jake: Um, which maybe Yes, I guess we I was gonna Give us a little bit of a I was gonna give a little bit of a an agenda here. Um, but uh, we're gonna talk about some News jets news. We got Wilson getting signed since the last time we had a podcast which was last week Uh, we have revus and trading camp notes We have Favre in his dirtiness in and off the football field. Talking about Ainge and rehab and Albert Haynesworth, who can't pass his test. Let's talk about the first thing that happened, because it happened the long way, which is we signed our first round draft pick. I think right before training camp, which is very good. I think all but one year, Tenenbaum's been able to do this. Justin: So all the dominoes fall after the number one pick signs, because then you know sort of what the scale is going to be. So when Bradford signed and got his $80 million, $50 million guarantee contract,
02 Justin: which is just disturbing and disgusting, because Tom Brady is making less money than this guy. And I mean, do you know Tom Brady is making $2 million less than David Garard? this year. Wow. How stupid is that? NFL really does need this lockout or something. Like they need to redo something because there's something wrong with the way that the contracts work but I digress. We did get all our we did get all our first round picks in. Knew it happened as soon as number one overall got his so. Jake: Good on Chan and Baum. Yeah, five years, $13 million. Pretty good. It's a, you know, it's a good thing. Like to have it. $7 million guaranteed. I think that the best part of it was he actually tweeted. He tweeted when he got it, he tweeted, I'm a millionaire. And he went to camp. I thought that was kind of funny. I'm really excited to see, I mean, again, we talked about it when we got drafted, but interesting to see him, you know, us pick a corner. You would have thought with Rivas and Camardi there that, you know, a corner would be the last thing, but I did predict it. Justin: So I was right. You did. Jake: I was wrong. Justin: Although, their second round pick was what I predicted they would do. So I feel good about that. Yeah, but I'm just saying that you just keep saying you know what I'm saying Well, you know what happens since since we last spoke that we sort of said would would happen last week was Laverne's Kohl's is actually there Jake: That's true. I saw him in a video. It was on Facebook. I don't know if you guys out there follow Facebook, you know, become a fan of the Jets on Facebook. What's nice about it is in your feed, along with all your friends, talking about their genital warts and what they had for breakfast. Some of my friends actually talk about both. Do they have genital warts for breakfast? Woof, that is disgusting. There you got your explicit tag for the day. And there you have it. And there you, and that's why. Okay, um... But then all of a sudden these jets videos pop up. So you get to watch the videos and now they actually work on the iPhone. So that's cool. So I can watch videos and one of them was them playing Madden 11, which comes out next week. Maybe we'll talk about that after it comes out. But they were playing it, I guess they were previewing it. And there was a various calls and it was just odd. I must say it was odd seeing them there. Cuz it's like a guy, I don't know, is it? it. Third time, I just don't know in a history, and maybe people have been signed and released and signed again, but like within the same year or something crazy like that, I can see that happening. But three times, meaning like played for us, went and played for another team. Came back and played for us for a full year or two, and then went and played for another team, and now came back to play for us again. I mean, that's, I don't know if that happens that often. And I mean I guess we talked about it a little bit, but now it's real it seems odd.
00 Jake: If he's your fourth receiver that's great. You know Sanchez has a lot of weapons. He does. It's in some ways puts a lot of pressure on him because. I don't think so. Justin: I think it takes a little pressure off because there's so much talent on the field that it should be easier for him to find open people. Jake: Well, I think it will highlight him if things go badly, meaning it isn't everybody else, it's you. If things go badly, right? He won't be able to say, oh, I didn't have everybody throw to, or oh, I didn't have a good offensive line, or oh, I didn't want to have a good running game, or oh, he had no defensive building me out. The pressure's on him because in a lot of people's eyes, he's the weak spot of the team. time. Right, he's the weak part. He's the second year. This is his sophomore year, although we'd love to say it's not because of the playoffs, but it is. And he had a lot of interceptions last year. And while he won some games, he also lost us literally very clearly. Him throwing like three or four picks or five, I think, in one game, maybe the Bills. They throw four in the Bills. Justin: They throw five. Yeah, one game where he had five. Jake: Yeah, I mean that's just and backbreaker too wasn't like we're losing by 50 and he throwed, you know, you do the Hail Mary it was like You're up by three and you're driving and you just gotta take a field goal to keep the game over and like he throws interception Run back for touchdown like those types of games So I think the pressure is really on him I actually think he'll step up. I don't think he's going to become, you know, he's not going to become, he's not going to go from Marc Santos to Peyton Manning the next year, but I expect, I expect much better production. I think the game will start to slow down for him and I think that he will definitely, again, show us. More shows more of what he had in in the playoffs than he had in the regular season Other news we got revus holding out not big news camp Yeah, I don't know. I don't know how I? Fans love to have their opinions, especially when they don't make the playoffs. They like that a lot of opinions. And he was saying, you know, oh you got a Stupid jazz together one. They're so you know, they don't pay anybody and they should pay me this man pay me this and I was And as we discussed last week, yeah, that's all great to say but he's the one with the longest contract meaning It's you know, it is three more years The other two guys are up this year. He's also probably going to get the most amount of money, so you don't want to give the person you're going to give the most money to first, because then that's clearly going to affect the second two. I don't know. I don't think that they're doing a bad thing by not settling it now, and I think they can only really focus on one or two of these at a time. He's last on the list, and I think he knows-that, and I think they know that.
01 Jake: and... We'll see but so he's choosing not to go to camp because he doesn't you know He's gonna use the I don't want to get hurt and if I get hurt in the middle of sign You know, but we on Washington excuse, although We on Washington seems like a good excuse now But it happens it does happen Justin: You know, I think now we've heard now is a good time actually since we talked about Wilson and Rebus to actually bring up a tweet Usually we do these at the end of the show, but okay since this question is actually very Um, very pertinent, um, uh, we have a Twitter question from at massive monkey, monkey spelled M-U-N-K-E-Y, uh, guys names Eric Nord, uh, tweeted at me, just Jack Kingdom, do you think that the absence of Revus is actually benefiting the team overall by giving Wilson more practice time? And that is quite an interesting question. I wish I could be very wishy-washy on the answer and say yes and no. Yes, because it's giving Wilson more playing time and giving Chroma are you a chance? And obviously letting Wilson play in a different, you know, let him move around and play different positions that he probably won't. You know, wouldn't play if Revas was there, but no, because I have a feeling Revas would be teaching him a lot if he was there. So, you know, you want the continuity also to be there when, you know, you're lined up in a nickel and the three of them are on the field at the same time. And there's a guy in the slot and Wilson standing there next to Revas and... you know what are they going to do with a zoning are they are they on man are they what happens if the receivers cross you know what there's a lot of nuance in in playing the defense backfield so I'd lean towards the answer being no I don't think it's a benefit right now but I see the silver lining in in Wilson getting more sort of First team touches let's say or first team reps Jake: So what is the question I guess the question I mean Yeah, I rather have it there. It no no No, no, no, my answer is I rather have him there If you told me today if you told me last week, we can always make you know, let me need out of lemons or you know, shit burgers out of shit, but that sounds disgusting. Lemonade sounds way better, but the idea we can have that with lemonade. But the so you asked me last week, oh, would it be OK if we just hold out and does a good training camp? I'd be like, no, get that boy into training camp. We got to get our defense together. We want to be the number one again. Yeah, OK, so now we're going, well, really, it's OK, because he's really good. And does he really need training? Yes, they need training camp. Yes, they need to be there. Do I understand why he's holding out? Yes. I guess the question is, how much will he hold out?
01 Jake: I think that's a better question, because if he holds out for a week or two weeks, is he going to hold out the entire preseason? and gonna hold out until... So the real fine start hitting where he stops to get, he doesn't get paychecks. At what point does he push Rex Ryan to say, listen, you're great, but you can't take down my team, right? There's other people on the field. Justin: I think he's just gonna get signed. Jake: You just think, do you think his deal will get done first? You think he'll get done for Mangle? Justin: Yeah, I think he'll just get signed. end. Because the other guys don't seem to care and he is and you know what he shouldn't be a bad lesson man well he shouldn't be making a million dollars this year I know that that's so stupid to say but he should and if there's other corners out there making 10 12 16 he should be making that it's it's a it's a it's a lesson in market value this guy's market value is what he should be paid And that's that. I guess. He was the number one defense last year and he was an enormous part of it and they have the ability to be the number one defense for Gears to come if they wrap him up. Because the way that they play defense really really really requires a player of Revas's caliber to be there. Jake: Yeah and that's why we went out and got a really good corner and then went out and drafted. Justin: Yeah but Kremarti is a one year thing. Jake: Yeah definitely. But that's why we have three and next year we'll probably do the same thing. I agree. He's not a commodity though He's the real deal. He's not a one-year thing. He's Justin: He's gonna be on the jets for another eight to nine years He's not a eight ten years is a long time he's only been in league like three years Yeah, it's not at a position like a running back where they where they have a three year lifespan He can play for 10 12 years Jake: I think I think the problem with this is if and I get it from the management side from the front offices if you bend over every time Someone says I want to be repaid. I want more money. It's not every time they haven't well that ever they don't well Well, no, but I'm saying there's a whole back and forth that if you do it, then what it says is that anybody is unhappy with their contract, which everybody's unhappy with their contract. Don't think you can walk into that, you know, that locker room and go to everybody and be like, so you got, everybody wants more money. And the minute they know someone, it's the thing. It's why we don't talk about salary in the outside world. It's why you don't walk down the hall and say, hey, Bob, I make 110. What do you make? You make 80? You know why? Because it drives people crazy to know that other people make more money, but it just happens to be a very public thing, and so... I don't know why sports are like that. Why is it public? It's weird. Justin: I think it's because of the double-sided... I know exactly how much Derek Jeter makes, and Alex Rodriguez makes, and I know how much money Mark Sanchez makes, and I know that Bradford just signed for, you know, 50 million guaranteed and 80 million overall.
01 Justin: Like, why do I know this shit? Jake: because they want you to know it. Because they also have their egos and they want, they wanna be stroked. They wanna be like, look, I'm the biggest dick on the planet. It's weird though, it's a little weird. I don't think it's weird. I think it is. Justin: Being in professional sports. I think it's a little weird. Jake: Anyway, the point is, if you line up every day with somebody and you practice with somebody and you're sweating your ass off running laps with somebody and that guy who's running right next to you is paid five times what you're paid and he misses a pass or he does, you know, I could see how it just drives people crazy. That being said, If every there's a reason it's a contract and there's a reason you sign a contract and I get that his contract was based On him being a rookie right and now he's gonna be well, although a first round draft pick So he's not like he was paid poorly Justin: And now he wants a new one. So those contracts are bullshit because they're not Guaranteed contracts which means they shouldn't even be contracts to begin with They're like jumping off points. It's well. There's part. There's parts that are guaranteed I'm not sure it's guaranteed money, but but Rebus could be cut tomorrow if he Blows out his knee and that's that Jake: well if if he doesn't have He could be cut tomorrow. I mean like you say like that's why I signed the contract, but Justin: I want to take labor side on this one and say you know screw you management You can cut me whenever you want. I want some control here. You know I want to Fuck you, man Jake: Here's the deal I I hope they just get done. I I want this to be not to go too far into our you know I want this to be done quickly. Again, this is a sport for Kings. Rich people on these teams. This is an uncapped year. I don't know why you can't just for this year say, okay, here's a big pile of money and next year you'll get nothing. And then he gets to go, yay, I'm a millionaire, a billionaire. And then next year, you know, just whatever. I'm sure they'll get it done. I don't like that he's holding out, but I get it. I understand it. I don't like it. Okay, okay. Let's move on training camp notes So we are not a training camp because we have day jobs and night jobs weekend but we've been reading the interwebs and Some notes coming out of camp. Well a camp is not gonna be a very it's not gonna be a mysterious thing come Monday or Tuesday Whatever the hard knocks comes out because we'll Justin: Basically, we'll see Wednesday is it not and say hard not think so Wednesday August 11th. Is that a day? today That can't be a day. I'll take a look today Thursday the 5th Jake: So I know I know it's I know it's ready man. Yes, which wow on the same day as man that fun
05 Jake: Okay, so I've read some stuff. What do you what have you been picking up on? Justin: I've read some stuff. I've read a couple of things. Supposedly Antonio Carmardi looks amazing. He looks like a new man. There were some quotes from Rexy that said a couple of funny things about his tackling saying, wow, he came to the jets and all of a sudden he starts hitting, you know, something like that. He said And if he hit like that in the playoff game, he might've tackled Sean Green very kind of jokingly. But supposedly he's been looking amazing. So that's great. I mean, think about having Rebus on one side and then someone who's, you know, of... of a upper echelon talent on the other side is really exciting. So that's one thing I've read about and I'm very excited about this defense even getting even better. And then the other thing I've read is that Dustin Keller is poised for a big time breakout season with all this talent all over the outside of the field and and and Tomlinson sort of swinging out of the backfield at tight end position is going to be single covered a lot and he has been looking very good and has been looking like Sanchez's sort of go-to target when he gets in trouble, he's looking a lot at Dustin Keller. So I'm looking for him to have a big season as he's having a good camp so far. And it does make sense that he would have a good season with all the position players kind of all over the place on the outside and talent coming out of the backfield that we didn't have. Thomas Jones didn't really come out of the backfield and catch the ball. all. Sean Green didn't really show that either. Leon did that, but he only played a couple of games. And he was really good at it. So to have that dimension back with LT is going to be interesting. A lot of screenplays, I bet. And a lot of attention being grabbed so Keller can sort of roam the middle of the field and be a. a real threat because he's got some talent. Jake: I am. Yep, yep. And I think, you know, doesn't tell her, actually, I just remember that. I think it was the Bengals game where he had that huge catch and run. That, you know, I just he has always impressed me. I know he came out and it was not a blocking tie them. But he has always impressed me and I think him, I'm really, really excited to see again the chem, I know it's the most overused phrase, but the chemistry between... Justin: You're a walking cliche. Jake: I am, I am walking cliche. Sanchez and everybody. Like, I want him to have the time with... I want him to have the time with Dustin Keller.
01 Jake: I want him to have the time with Sean Green. I want him to tie with his offensive line. I want him, that's what's gonna make him better is consistency. And not only is the game gonna slow down for him, but not only is the playbook gonna become easier for him. And it's like you do anything. It's like when you drive somewhere once. It's always a little stressful. for the next couple of days. And the second time you drive it, the third time you drive it, it's like your mind can then stop from the, oh my God, am I going the right place to then start focusing on other things. And he, I think, you know, the what time to have to show up at the game and what, where's my pads going to be and all that. Just, there must be a million questions he has in the, in, you know, being in pro football for your first year that are all gone now. And now he can focus on the other stuff. I cannot wait to see it. I don't think he's gonna have this huge breakout year and become, you know, the next best thing this year but anyway, so speaking of Justin: Quarterbacks. Well, there's other things from the from the training camp that have happened then are worthy of mentioning, you know Jason Taylor got his number 99 Nice there was an arrangement made so I think Thomas will be wearing the number 58 Okay, those you have a Brian Thomas jerseys you now have Jason Taylor jerseys so you can go burn interesting position battles with I think the only really like Position that we don't know who the starter is I'm pretty sure it's just the left guard. I mean, every other position I think is pretty short up with the exception of maybe is Vernon Goldstein gonna start at defensive end or maybe Mike DeVito will start, but everyone else is settled except that left guard position. I think Slossen and Vlad Dukas have been switching off. Um, with the, uh, you know, day by day, who's starting, you know, one of them will start one day, the other one will start the other day. And that'll be interesting to watch on hard knocks. We'll get a sneak peek into that position battle. Jake: Yeah, I can't wait. I'm actually like, you know, I used to follow the training camp much closer through the interweb. I'm a little bit holding back because I kind of want to see it Is that weird that I want to see it kind of as it unfolds on hard knocks? No, it's not weird. Okay. Justin: I mean, it's a little behind, obviously. It's like a week behind, right? Yeah, it'll be a week behind. I mean, this when we see it next week, it'll cover this week. So it's a little behind, but, Jake: you know, it'll be really cool. Nonetheless, yeah, can't wait for it. Yeah. Um, so speaking of another former jet actually two former jet quarterback stories um, one is that uh, broadway joe was uh at training camp this week and You know the the talk of super bowl came up and said that You know, it wasn't out of line for the jets to be talking about it. I I always think I'm never one to say let's talk about these things. I I think just
03 Jake: Just go out and win games. And when you've won enough games, when you win five or six games, you can, uh. Sorry, that was me opening a seltzer bottle. Yeah, I know. It kind of sounded like you were passing gas. One or the other. Just win games. And you want to get to the, you could talk about the Super Bowl when you're getting ready to go play in the Super Bowl. And I get it last year, Rex Ryan did the whole, you know, here's our playbook. And here's where we're going to throw the parade. I think that worked at that point. I think for this year, it's got to be about shutting up and doing just shut up. Do your job. Win games. We got some pretty tough opponents and people want our blood like the Bengals who are not going to be, you know, they're not going to be an easy team. We've got other teams that whatever could be can't wait to be crap out of the Bengals. Vikings who may or may not have farbs. So he was actually, you know, it's forever going on. I don't even want to talk about it. The only thing that's funny, and I tweeted this yesterday, I was watching the little thing on, you know, on whatever, on NFL.com. They had the video clip, and I started to watch it. And I was like, what's that hat he's wearing? And all of a sudden, I was like, is that a jet-ton? It's the camo hat. You know, it's all camo, even the logo is camo. So you can't really tell. So then I went over to the HD version. And I like, you know, slowed it up and then took a picture. And damn if he isn't wearing a Jets hat or cap, which is just odd. I don't know. There's something weird about it. Oh, it's totally odd. If you were wearing a Packers hat, I could kind of be like, OK, he played with that team forever. And that'd probably be odd too. Just wearing it. It can't be a quarterback under a. If I saw Mark Sanchez out there with a Patriots hat on, I'd be like, what the? No, you can't do that, dude. You can't wear another team's hat. And again, they're not like total rivals, but we played them this year. I mean, the Vikings play the Jets this year, and the quarterback of the Vikings as of right now is wearing the hat of the other team. I just thought that's just peculiar. Anyway, he might not, or mine and Ryan not coming back. It makes that game change from what it could be. It's a Monday night game for us. Are you going with that game to me? Or going with that game game with me the Vikings? I think you are. Yeah, I am. Um... So again, it'll be a good game no matter why. It'll be Monday night, it'll be awesome, but having him be there or not will be interesting to watch. And then this article that literally someone forwarded to me today, I want to just check to see what the date is on the article. It came out yesterday. The Dirty Photo article. The Daily News, and it's basically about... Well, it's a Deadspin report. It's from Deadspin. Which is? Oh, you don't know about Deadspin? No. Justin: Oh, it's a huge sports blog that is sometimes satirical and sometimes not. So it's hard to tell when they have a real story and not a real story.
02 Jake: Oh, forget it then. It's probably fake. I mean, it could very well be fake. Too stupid to even talk about that. I don't know why Daily News would then repost a story that is not. Justin: I mean, Deadspin is... sometimes real and they just they write in a very interesting way I wouldn't say Jake: they're the onion but you know they I don't care then it's not even worth saying because it's not our quarterback doesn't matter other stories little quick stories and then we'll wrap this puppy up Okay, ancient rehab apparently he's uh Not having an easy time and we'll be suspended for 10 games. Why is well or cuz he's he's um Justin: He's basically being treated for substance abuse right now. I don't know if he's necessarily in in rehab, but he He is it's the second time that he's sort of failed this drug policy and I think the second time your second strike is like a 10 game suspension. So if he were to even be on the jets which he's not guaranteed to be, he wouldn't be there for at least 10 games. So you got that going on and you also have Clemens on the pup list. So you really only have two... quarterbacks, unless there's like a fifth guy running around there that are doing anything in training camp right now, both named Mark. Jake: All right, so I'm going to throw it out there. I can make a little. The last story was about Albert Haynesworth. I don't really care. Justin: Well, he can't he can't pass his conditioning test. It's sort of a joke. Jake: I don't care about joke. Yeah, it's a joke. All right. I want right now from you to end this podcast. I want. your top five teams ranked in terms of power, meaning the best team right now in both the AFC and NFC top five serious. Yeah, I'm going to go first. You're going to go first. Yeah. Fine. So I'm going to AFC first and then you're going to go AFC and then we'll both go NFC. Okay. Top five. in terms of power. Number five. You're gonna go backwards too? Yes. I want to go backwards. Good lord. I know I'm good. Number five. Patriots. I can't even do this. Yeah I can. Number five is Patriots. You can't get them out. Tom Brady's still there. They still have Bill Bell checked. They're number five. Number four. Jets. It's. I'm putting the just number four. I think we're I think at this point we are actually better than the Patriots. I don't know if we'll win head to head every single time. I think we're better. Number three, chargers and chargers are up there. They seem to do very well year in and year out. Number two Ravens
00 Jake: Again they have a great defense they've got some weapons this year that they haven't had for a long time Joe Flacco's going into his third year You know them going on the road last year and beating the Patriots in the in the playoffs was impressive I think that they are gonna be I can see them in the Jets playing in the playoffs first round somewhere and number one Colts because until someone beats them until that team doesn't win 12 to 14 games a year they are gonna still be number one give me your top five all right should I go backwards like you go Justin: backwards if my fifth is also the Pats for is the Chargers okay Three is the Ravens. Jake: Okay, two are the Jets and And number one are the Colts Yeah, you're boring. Hey Justin: Man, I just pick it the way I see it. Yeah. Okay You want me throw the Browns in there? No, there's some there's some fringe teams. I was thinking about the Titans and the Bengals and the Dolphins those would round out my top eight Jake: I'm going to go NFC now top five starting with the five going down and I will say number five, Redskins. Wow, I think adding McNabb they have not had forever They had a good defense last year their offense couldn't get out of their own way This is a team that came very close to being the Saints I mean they I think that they'll it'll push them over the top for Cowboys 2 from that division, I think Cowboys, again, they have a lot of weapons, they seem to play very hard and get there. 3, see it's Vikings with or without. I'm going to say he's out so I'm not even going to put them in there. 3, Packers. occurs. Like the pack I like they're a young team They've got a good quarterback who's coming into his own he throws a lot of balls a lot of yards He can just kind of be protected a little bit more He's on his way number two I'm having troubles Yeah, I guess Vikings got the Vikings in there they made it that far they still a great defense I guess they've been number one in rush defense for the last four years except for last year where they were number two You know, I think if far comes back there there if he doesn't they're down and then you can't take away from those Super Bowl winning Saints You gotta give them number one. They won good games, they, you know, lucked out in a few, but whatever. Justin: So I'll go backwards as well. I'll put the pack at number five. Very promising young quarterback and a pretty good defense. Cowboys four. Even though I don't really like them that much,
02 Justin: they're probably, you know, four. I'm assuming Favre's playing. I'm, Favre's playing. I'm putting it that way. Barb's playing and the Vikings are number three. I'm putting the Falcons at number two. Falcons, really? Falcons, really like them this year. And the Super Bowl winning Saints, how can you not put them at the top? I mean, you have to. Jake: You know what we should do this year as I think about this? creating new rules on the fly and I am for this week so so for this week since you're in a fantasy football we and a semi-intro maybe we'll fancy football things during the season just saying just saying for people all right well Well that wraps up another episode of the Jet Kingdom podcast.
