07 Justin: implementation of their women. The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. Longest Running New York Jets Podcasts on the Entire Interwebs. My name is Jake. I'll be your host for this ride. Seems so angry. And joining me today. Why are you so angry? The hundred and fucking thirteenth time. Oh, I'm the cursing. Is the not so angry... Justin. See the smile on my face? Yeah. That's cause... There's gonna be football on television tomorrow. Tomorrow fucking night. What's with the cursing? Fuck, I don't know fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Why not? That's why we have the explicit text. That's right, why not? I'm excited even though it's the Pats, right? Aren't they on? No, it's uh... Is it the Pats? Charger Seahawks. What was the Pats? I think it's only Curtis the Ox, Chargers, Seahawks, and then we have Dolphins playing Friday night. Ah, and I have the NFL Network now, so I get all of these games, right? But I think, I don't think they're all live. I think you get them all later. I'm on DVR mall and just watch them. I can't watch games that are over. I could, I could watch them over and over again. Free season games that are over, that are not in your team. You know that. over the off-season. The off-season. They were replaying all the games from last year, and when they got into the playoffs, they replayed NFL replay on the NFL network. They put all the games on from the playoffs, and I still have the Jets Colts game and the Jets Pats game. on my DVR or on my TiVo as it was and I've watched them each four times. That's crazy. Yeah I love it. That's- I can watch those games over and over. I know them by heart now. You know me. I go every play that's coming I'm like oh this is where Jericho Kottry gets that long catch. Yeah. She goes down the field. Nice. Speaking of Jericho Kottry. We talked about that last week how he's gone. We've talked about everybody departing. He's gone. Jco is gone And Derek Mason's in and I think that's an upgrade Yes, so no we talked about all we talked about Maris and Mason almost being signed So so we've come up we've agenda. Let's talk about our agenda. All right, why don't we do that? We're gonna talk about some contracts talk about some depth charts. Okay, talk about some hurt players already in camp And then got some other little tidbits to end it off. Short agenda. Short agenda, well, it's training camp. We'll babble. We'll babble. Well, there's going to be a game for us to talk about on our next pod. Oh, yeah. So, Jets play Monday night. This coming Monday night. Yeah, I can't wait. It's our first... I was wearing my can't wait shirt the other day.
02 Jake: Can't wait t-shirts. We got those the other day. I was wearing those. I put it in order for something. special for you, you don't even know it's coming. Oh nice. You're gonna get something in the mail within the next, hopefully by the jet game on Monday. I can't wait, that I can't wait for. So let's talk about contracts. So really the first, came out the other day actually that being today, that the breaking down of the new contracts that were things. So they're making room in the cap, they've actually just been complaining about having not a lot of money left. They... Oh, I know the big news. We forgot to put in there. Ellis. Well, that's where this money thing comes from. So that's where it comes from. But basically... First off, I think Ellis is worthy of talking about before this stupid contract. Sure. Here's the deal. Ellis is a fantastic... was a fantastic jet. 11 year veteran. 11 year vet. played great. Drafted by Parcels? I believe he was a class of, I believe it was the first round was him, John Abraham, Eppington and Anthony Beck. The one guy stayed the longest out of all those. You know, he's a very nice player. Getting a little long in the tooth, getting a little old, had a nice playoff run, has been injury free, which has been awesome. Yep. And we offered him probably what he was worth, in my mind. Right. The minimum for a veteran. By the way. Minimum veteran is $900,000. Yes, so that's like a decent chunk of change, but I'm sure he was making a lot more than that before. You know, Practical Birds comes back, signs a $3 million contract. Yeah, I don't know. Just thinking, like, comparing it to something that's close. Yeah. Three times. Well, Milan Edwards got a $1 million contract. Yeah, interesting. Incentive kickers that are impossible, that he'll never hit. So I'm gonna make a prediction about Brown. There's something under there There's something about him that they don't think it's gonna happen because there's no there was no reason not to resign him If it was about money cuz I think Mason's gonna make more money. Yeah, it's a little ridiculous There must have been something in there because if you stack up Mason versus versus country. I personally really had country I think country had a bigger hot upside. So I'm not country. Sorry Edwards like you did Edwards versus Mason I get contrary, but Edward's a little weird that seems weird. I get two plaques versus Braylon He must have pissed someone off with the whole in the whole negotiating, but anyway By the way, I said plaques back to Ella's. I know is not plaques plaques plaques plaques not plaques. I tell us For our team right what we offered him. I think was fair But for him the pats offer four times that amount of money I got to take the money gotta take it at this point your career and he goes right on the puck list you go there Grab the money four million bucks for him. No one else was offering him that now that had I wonder if he's there for
08 Jake: spill the beans During training, he's gonna get the fuck out you Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. It hurts. It always hurts when you see players go in. It hurts for them to go there. Like, the wood head hurt, and there's a bigger loss than Danny Woodhead. Well, it's only if he performs. If he doesn't perform, I don't give a shit. It's still a thing. If he's on the sidelines in week whatever we play them in, week 11 or 12, I'd fuck it. I don't give a shit. You know he'll get a sack. It's like... You just know it. Well that's what I was thinking about. Someone else went to another place. What had killed us? Yeah, I know. So I'm saying, I doubt, I don't want to see. But obviously now it's up to the rookie to come in there and sort of play. Couple rookies. Yeah, we have a lot of rookies. A lot of rookies in. Yep, we'll presume. The other Ellis, now the only Ellis. The only Ellis. They cleared namespace by getting rid of an Ellis. They can even get him the jersey, 92, and put his name on it. There you go. And he never left. That's right. He never left. That's all I've got. So let's just talk about the money. So it looks like, it looks like, Tomlinson was due 2.4, now down to 1.1. We mentioned that one last week, because we knew about it. Pace and Scott, Pace and Bart Scott. But Tomlinson's also fully guaranteed. So he's gonna make the team. He's going to make the team and be a third down. That's it. He's making the team. That's OK. Paces Scott took less money. This was all for NomDee, right? They just didn't get NomDee. So then they spent it on Crow and Blacks and whoever else they got in there. I was just thinking, I've been watching a lot. There seems to be a backlash, right? I think people. Oh! The general consensus of the football nation, which is not including us fucking die-hard jet fans, is that we downgraded our position at wide receiver and that we let go of better players than we replaced them and that we are not, if you have the three that are hit the field this year, or one that might limp onto the field, and if it was the three that were on the field last year that made the AFC Championship, Every kind of time I turn on the TV, it's like these guys downgraded. I don't get it. I think, I mean, there's... So, homes to homes equal. Equal. Maybe he's over this year because he knows the system. Well, he's got four more games. And four more games. That alone is. And he's got a year under his belt with Sanchez. But fine, equal. Equal. Then I'm gonna go to three. I'm gonna go to Mason Takachri. Okay. It's not even close, as much as a jet homer as I am and love Jericho Kottree, if you look at just what these two guys have done over their career. And I know Jericho's like eight or nine years younger, but it's not like he was in the, it's not like he played young. It's not like he was fast. It's not like... You know, you don't you didn't think of him as a young receiver. You you just don't I mean right the fact that mason's 37 and Khatri is 28 or 29 doesn't matter. Khatri wasn't like in the future plans
01 Jake: Anyway, we're in win now mode as we should be every year. So Derek Mason is a better player you look at their numbers their stats a better player or was a better player Is a better player is a better player Last year was a better player. The year before that was a better player. Every year that they've played in the same year has been a better player. Better player! Okay. Taller. Better player. Better player. Just is! Final answer. You look at their numbers, Kautry's best year of scoring touchdowns, even when he was number two. or even close to a number one receiver on the Jets, was six. Mason surpassed that like four or five times in his career and has had many other seasons where he scored five. Contreras just, the numbers don't even come close to stacking up. And Mason's been a number one on other teams. Last year was a number two. Contreras was a number three on our team. It's not even close. I only think age is something. But he can still play. Yeah. It's not, you know, the guy... Kottry's biggest thing was his hand and he dropped a lot of balls. You make an argument, I think your argument, even if you were to say it's a plus, that's not a huge plus. Not a huge plus. We didn't trade Kottry and end up with, you know. We didn't get Larry Fitzgerald for Jared and Kottry. Yeah, fits or something. Didn't have it. Right. But anyway. I think that's an upgrade. If not a slight upgrade. Slight, slight to no. Where the question comes in is the number two slot. The Braylon Edwards versus Plaxco. Braylon had a fantastic year last year. Yep. But he still only had 50 something catches for 900 yards. Okay. I'm sure Plaxico can do that. Like, that's not even a big year for him. I agree if you're talking Plaxico pre-pre-preak. That's the question mark. Yeah, it's two years out of football. And in jail. It could have been good for him. But it took Vic an entire year to get back to the foreplay. Oh, and he didn't play. He wasn't on the field. It's not like it took Vic a year to get back into form. Vic wasn't given the opportunity to even get back into form. Every report at McNabb was still there. I understand. And even last year, they weren't going to start. I know. Michael Vic wasn't the starter. I know. So it's not... But the reports out of it were he was not in good enough shape to take over that team, even if he had... performed like a mother. He also does different things. He's the quarterback who runs. This is a receiver who crawls. But he's 6'5", it's throw it up, we'll catch it. Did you see what I tweeted this for? You don't shrink. No. It doesn't happen. In jail, you don't shrink. Like it doesn't happen. It's funny because you're staying in jail and your hands kind of going like over your... Yeah. Like, bop, bop, bop. That's what happens. Is that your jail? That happens in jail. You bend over in jail. Yeah. You don't... You don't shrink in jail. He's still 6'5", he can still run, he can still catch the ball, he's got good hands, he's got better hands than Breyland Edwards does.
01 Jake: Well that's... he's got... he had better hands. His best year... not his best year in his career, but... because he had one crazy year in Cleveland, but his best year that we could have asked for last year and his stats still weren't. all that great he'd still disappear in certain games. I... Not that I'm hating on Breylan, I thought he was fantastic and I would have loved to have had him back. I don't see this as a major downgrade, I see the receiving core as status quo. Here's what I feel like, I feel like Plax now offers a target in a certain situation. He offers the end zone target. He offers the I'm six inches greater, taller than any, I love it. Did you see the SportsCenter thing I posted? Science, Sports Science. They did a whole thing on plaques coming back. And they compared him to, because it was before he think he signed, or maybe, yeah, I think it was before he signed, they compared him to Dreeves. They said, even the greatest corner, and they showed his height, they showed, he's that target. But what I don't think he's is the guy who can get the ball. Get the catch the ball at the five and make it through three defenders and get into the end zone when I watch I watch Edwards do that multiple time. I remember the one game against Miami like powered through guys. I think he had much more This is gonna sound stupid like like core strength. I feel like This is a big beam. He's a Pilates guy, a Yogalates. I feel like Plax is like a go for the ball, big guy, jump up, one hand, catch, yay! But that's not an every down situation. That's a very specific thing. Now granted, Jets in the red zone last year sucko. So maybe that's what we're missing, you know? If you know Holmes is there, you're like, well, double fuck out of him. We know that one guy kind of dropped balls, so maybe we got another guy over there, and we're like, just throw it up in the corner, and there he goes. He jumped 40 feet in the air. But I don't think it's an upgrade. Even as the biggest homer, I can't say it's an upgrade. I don't know if it's an upgrade, but I think. We can. We might come back. But right now, on paper, he's not an upgrade. As a whole? the core to the core that it was last year? Downgrade. No! I see it, I see it as even. I don't see it as a downgrade. Well because I think that the potential the potential for problems out of Plax way way way out way out does the small upgrade that Mason brings. So you think Plax is that much of a downgrade from them up. Braylon Edwards? I think the risk factors, the age factor, the not being in football shape for two years factor. There's gotta be something up with Braylon, nobody can sign literally anywhere for a million dollars. Literally anywhere. I think we would've given him a million dollars. Well, we didn't. I know. We could've. We didn't. I know. So there's something there. I agree. But I'm just saying, my gut feel is, it doesn't feel like a huge upgrade. If anything, it's flat. I'm not saying it's an upgrade. You are. You're saying it's upgrade over last year. Our thing is flat. Oh, you're saying it's flat. That's right. I've said that three times. Well, that sucks.
00 Jake: I don't want to be flat going from one ... Then you actually take ... Then you have to take a negative because it's two new guys, right? That's a bad thing. For a young quarterback, third year, new guys are no good. Like, oh, good. I think he'll be fine. All right. I just ... I don't think it's ... I think it's flat to down. You think it's flat to flat? That's that. or flapped up. You gotta be saying up. The potential's there to be up. Oh, potential's always there for awesome sauce, but didn't happen. Alright, Jets. See, we rambled. We babbled. We got there. That's your fault. Well, I'm right. So, I mean, I don't want to be right. Here's our depth chart. Depth chart. Look who's not on there. Our upgrade at wide receiver. What are you talking about? You're not reading it correctly. I'm not? No, you're not. Oh, you're right. I'm reading it wrong. I was like, because of media, I was like, oh yeah. Oh yeah, we're not doing it the way I thought we were doing it. No, they have it split like wide receiver one and then on the other side wide receiver two. So I like seeing the names. from like guys like uh you know middle linebacker and seeing like brash jim satelli like guys who you noticed like from the from the hard knocks from last year well ropti patuetuhi who broke his foot and that was a guy who i totally forgot about oh my god that's really glad that he's back is is ropati Petuitua. Petuitua. You're a Petuitua client. You're like, oh, they released Charnellis. We're pretty thin at defensive end. We have a rookie starting. And then you forget, like, oh, there was this up and comer who was really starting to catch the eyes of the coaching staff. And he was out for the whole year. So, you know, I guess we just started with the defense. Oh, his names I don't even recognize, though. I guess we just started with the defense, right? Sure. So defensive end. You got Mo Wilkerson, Ro Potti. I'm not even gonna go down to the third string. Nose tackle. Tell me something that, because everybody knows like there's, you know, we're all jet fans here. We all know who we should, tell me stuff that sparks your interest. That sparks my interest? Yeah, like something you're like, ooh, that's interesting. Well, I know we went into Rodney Poole. I don't think we talked about that. Did we talk about that last week? We got Poole back? It might not have happened at that point. There's actually not a whole lot of surprises here. The one thing that'll be interesting to me to watch in preseason is the right tackle starting position. Because on this list it has Wayne Hunter starting at right tackle. And I sort of assumed Vlad Dukas would take that over this year. So it'll be interesting to see who ends up winning that right tackle starting position job. That's one thing. And McKnight's two behind me is behind, McKnight is behind, we thought that Damien would be third in the string. No? No. So that'd be one and two? Yeah. Alright. Because Strong Green is going to be the first and second down running back, LT will be the third down running back, getting spelled by McKnight maybe at times. What you know what will be interesting is the is the kick returns pop returns Thought we'd see Joe McKnight towards the top of that list and instead we have Jeremy Curley the rookie who
04 Jake: Right drafted to sort of replace Brad Smith at the at the top of that list for punks and kick returning I can't remember if if TJ Connelly the punter Was the guy from hard knocks last year that they let go Remember they had two punters in the game? I can't remember if one of these guys, Conley or Brian, I want to think Conley was, but I'm not 100% sure. Nothing else really, you know, woke out of me. Give me a player from the offense and a player from the defense that you are most excited to see in the first game, since we won't be, we'll talk about the first game yet. Most excited, you're looking like you're the guy you're going to zip in on in that first game, because they're going to play. Probably quarter, quarter and a half. Yeah, you're talking starters or backups? Just give me a player that you've, two players, one offense, one defense. I really want to see John Connor starting fullback. Okay, that's good. I'm gonna actually watch. I, because of last year, it's like, I'm gonna watch the fullback and watch him crunch people. Right. I'm gonna focus in. So in offense, you're gonna watch Connor in undefense? Jim Leonard. I want to see how he came back and... response from being out last season. I'm actually Wilkerson, the rookie, you know, first round. I'm gonna watch the first round pick, see what he's doing on defense. On offense, I don't know, who's, I mean, you know, it's Plax. He's, I think, the guy we've got the most. Listen, if there's a linchpin other than the unthinkable, which is the thing we don't talk about like the quarterback going, but there's a linchpin I think to this, where things start to fall apart, we lose our number one receiver, that could be a problem. So he's our number one receiver at this point, number two receiver, one and two, one and one A? It looks like on this depth chart, plaques are homes and plaques are the starters, then you have Derek Mason at three. And then you sort of have, you know, the next two are Curly and Patrick Turner, who was on the roster last year. After that, you sort of get down to the Scotty McKnight level, and then who we drafted, and then some other guys who I've never really heard of. So the one name that pops out of me is the name I do not ever want to see. I don't want to hear it get called, ever. Ever. Drew Willie. Robert Feli- Robbie Felix. Robbie Felix. Yeah, he's the center for he's the backup center. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I don't ever want to hear that name I don't want to even hear Drew Willie. He's the fourth string quarterback. No, well, I'm an awesome name Drew, will you really and then you got kicked out school because you drew Willie named Joe Willie Joe Yeah Yeah, I guess Sean Green too. I'm kind of like, okay, gloves are off. I don't think we're going to see much ahead of the preseason. No. I think you're going to see a heavy dose of Joe McKnight and Valau Powell.
00 Jake: Nice. So, uh, two other little bits of injury news before we get into our last segment, which I don't know what it is, but I'll make it up. So that's our last segment? No. So, blacks, the ankle, still not good. Not really fully participating yet. He's off schedule, compared to what they said was going to happen. He would be ready between this and this. He's not. So, concerns. He might have been playing that first game. I mean, the only thing that kind of keeps my heart is the year that they won, you know, our Giants friend who had, you know, a big fan until he shot himself in the leg. You know, the year they won the Super Bowl, the guy never practiced. He played every Sunday, but he never practiced. And so... I know he's a gamer. I know he's a guy who's going to show up on Sunday and play. To what ability? I don't know. He seems like he's got this stuff. But then we hear that Wilkerson has hurt himself a little bit. A little tweak. I forgot what the actual injury was. But, so, you know, it's always, this is the scariest time. It's a great time for football fans because football's back. Do you even remember that we were in that whole CBA thing at this point or not? Yeah. It still lingers a little bit. Do you think by kickoff we even remember? I think we'll just be like, what? It doesn't really linger. I mean, no, by the time, like, the first... game regular season game starts I won't have remembered it at all and now I'm gonna watch so many preseason games by then just people all of them team all watch out one of the last thing I would get two last things one is season tickets have shipped for the Jets I got my FedEx thing so I think they're either waiting in my house now or it will be there very soon think it will be in a nice package like it was last year probably I don't know I still have my own just play but I know we're getting the hats. Yes! I ordered the extra hats. That's awesome. That's a hat. I want a hat. And the last thing is a little bit since we are going to do some more fancy stuff this year. We are. I know you've been doing your... I've been doing some prep. You've been doing some prep. How many mock drafts have you done so far? Two. You've done just two. Okay. I participate in mock drafts on CBS Sports Line. So if you see you there. My handle is Green Man. Green Man. So I have not done one, but I need to do it. I've been studying my roto wire as a rookie. I read my... I had the Jets defense in the first round yesterday. I just... I pissed everyone off. I read, as you gave me the book for my birthday, you gave me Fantasy Football for Dummies. I read it. from iPad to iPad, I don't know what that, what do you even call it? You don't call it cover? Justin: Kindle app to Kindle app. Jake: From start to finish. Corner to corner. And I'm ready. I'm ready to get in there. I got the command center, I got some new additions to command center this year. Oh, big news. For my birthday, the wife, she purchased me. The fan vision. Oh, the fan vision. Fan vision. So I'm excited for the fan vision.
02 Jake: I'm excited to use that at the tailgate. I'm excited to see if it works at the tailgate. Tell the hun that I'm excited about using it at the tailgate. I want to see if I can sling. I want to see if I can sling. I want to use the fan vision and I want to sling the game from home onto my iPad. I want to be able to get a sling box. I'm thinking about it. I know you had one. I did. I didn't work with RCN. Yeah, which is the same thing I have. So I'm wondering, is mine going to be different or upgraded or something? I could not find the LED or the IR transmitter. I have to do a little research. Yeah, you want to do some research. But the idea of being able to have both... This is a fantastic thing. I sold it on eBay. But how does the fan vision work? Does it go over the internet? Does it go over there? No, it's on its own. It's on a different channel, like a UF channel or something, like a UF. It's like on a local. I don't know. It's on a local. Back to the day when you had the two dials on the TVs, and the top was like 1, 3, 13, and the bottom was the rest. So it's nothing new with cell phones, nothing to do with the internet. It's local broadcast. It's local broadcast. And so apparently, but. I'm hoping it comes because it will be on for the preseason game. So we can test it at the Cincy game. Woohoo! I know, so I'm very excited. I can't wait to go to that Cincy game. When is that? I don't really... Yeah, two weeks. I'm not really excited about the... I mean, I think it's a little geeky. No, it's not. It's awesome. I know, so the nice thing is when you're taking a pass, you can still watch replay. You can bring it into the stadium. Of course, that's where you bring it. It's for the stadium. It's for the stadium? Oh my god, are you, what are you, nuts? I always think of it for the teg game. No! It's for the game, because you can watch, you can watch the red zone, you can get fantasy, whatever, and you can watch different plays. You can actually change the camera angle and watch... Of the game that you're at watching live? Yes! Yes! So... Different camera angles, I want the end zone. So when there's a replay, we can like quickly go to it. Yes, we can see it before someone else. When you're challenging. We can yell to Rex, throw the flag! Yes. Throw the flag! Or we can change, or in a live play, we can change a different angle. We can use any of the cameras. Is there the Sanchez angle that just follows Mark Sanchez around? I think there's a quarterback cam, yeah. That's awesome. So they put a camera in his helmet so that we can just watch that one. Plus, red zone and out-of-market team. So we can go in, and if we had to know, if the Patriots are playing the. like it was before and you wanted to watch that game as you go into the stadium so you could before your game starts you could be like watching it. I'm excited. I want that shit. Plus it works in Dolphin Stadium so when I'm down there for the New Year's Eve game or New Year's Day game it works there too. So bonus, bonus, bonus. Alright well that's the end of Jet Can Podcasts 113 episodes. That's a shit ton. Wow. We will be doing I think we're back to weekly right? We're back to weekly. Yeah, why not? All right. So we're not going to make any picks though. We don't make preseason picks. That's useless. I think in the beginning of September we have to do our... I know the day will do it because we only got one thing to do on the day. We got to do our traditional yearly pick segment and make all the picks throughout the whole
