20 Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, the longest running New York just podcast. Ever. My name's Jake. If you've forgotten, because we don't podcast that often, join me. Off season. Oh dude, you know when the last time we did last season, what are we supposed to find 13? Yeah, what happened? Happen optional You're optional by the way, he's Justin. I'm 261 times in a row. This is also coming up on our anniversary, our podcast anniversary. Ten years. It's. Is it ten? No, he started in 2007. I thought it was six. Seven. Darn it. So nine years. Shit. We got to get to ten. We've been in the league for nine years. We are. Justin: We're on our second contract. Jake: We are our second contract. Justin: We're in a contract year, by the way. Jake: We better step it up. We are. We're back. It is the season starting and there's. Training camp. Hope whatever is eternal. And so let's get it to it. We have to do some review. We have about 34 minutes to get it done. So, oh yeah, so we have news. We'll go for some news. We'll go for some good news. We'll talk We were just waiting for the fuck have we been. OTAs dude. Well there were the natural ones too that we did. Justin: No. That was mandatory. Alright fine. And we've been fucking with Lady on Bell doing drugs and not taking drugs. Jake: and That's very good. We did actually do the draft so I feel good about that. So let's do a recap Yeah, we've got a draft happened. We liked our picks. We liked our picks. We think we think we signed everybody Not sure about our second round pick. Everybody is signed. Yeah, we'll talk about that and Let's get to like the most recent news I think so I so the two big things now train camp started yesterday two days ago on Wednesday. Yeah awesome Two big things happened in the last, let's say two weeks. Which one do you think is better, bigger? What's the bigger news? Which one of those two events Justin: are the most impactful? The most impactful. The, do we name them? Jake: All three of these? You wanna go all three or you wanna, I'm just saying the two ones happened with jets. Justin: The things that happened, well, it's Moe. getting a long term deal and it fits. Being back with a very short deal with a one-year deal not even what's the most impactful thing that happened here Wow
00 Justin: It's hard to say. Well, I don't think it's even remotely hard to say I I do like the idea of having Mr. Wilkerson locked up for five years. I think that that's a big deal Jake: I think that so let's talk about that first I could not agree more. We had talked, I think it's some of the podcasts, I remember saying, although we're never liable for anything we said before, but I remember saying, you know, listen, we have other guys. It is sort of, we have- We truly do. We have a thing of riches. It's a luxury. But if we do the math on the contracts and between Sheldon and how long we can keep him, and obviously- Big Cat and how long we have him and now Mo, we kind of have these three dudes Which I think are going to dominate for the next two to three years which is pretty freaking awesome and Watching the other contracts get signed. I mean there are lots of contracts signed, you know for John Miller some massive contract I think he's I think the contract was fair. I think it was good for the jets. I think this defense will be better with him on it. And it's something the jets generally don't do, which is to sign their star star players. We generally flub on that general as a general rule. I think the Revas rule was kind of it like Here's a question if we had signed Rivas when he was hurt and coming back off the F is Torn knee or whatever like we could have probably signed him for a longer term for less than what we just signed him for last year So probably so sometimes I think the Jets don't make these sort of long like pay the big that you're good guys that you grew Up you drafted them. They're your guys. I think we sometimes do the grass is always greener You know, I think that that is a thing across all sports. Justin: You always undervalue your own player and overvalue the free agent from another player. I think that that's just a thing. Jake: But other teams don't do that. I mean, the Packers are a great example. They don't do that. They almost never bring in free agents. They almost always draft and then keep signing their guys and keep them on their team. and they're a very consistently winning team. And there are other teams that are constantly floating around trying to grab guys. So I like that they home grew a guy, he's one of the best and we're paying him and it's not a deal that, I mean it's not a, you know, it's not the groundbreaking he got paid the most money that ever was done ever in the history. So it was a reasonable fair. So I'm happy, I'm happy to watch him and Richardson and Williams for the next three years and see how they use these guys. Because this could be really cool. Like we could have a very dominating frontline. I think we have a very dominating frontline with those guys. Justin: Right. I just as a side note, I know I know I know I have a side note for you, so fuck off.
03 Justin: OK, and this is where is this podcast going to go? Yep. So I was listening to I was actually listening to PTI as a podcast this morning just for the sake of it, because it would I knew the front story would be Fitz. And Kornheiser, I'm looking for the stat and I can't find it, but Kornheiser had this stat about Ryan Fitzpatrick where when His team's defense gives up 17 or fewer points He's like 36 and two as a starter, right? When they don't he's like Some abysmal like I don't know I'm just gonna say like 12 and 60. It's something so stupid That but I feel like that's almost every quarterback almost maybe but it shows a few things one Jake: You can win with it Justin: You could if your defense is stout and this Wilkerson thing is a big part of that just bringing it back Right, right if you could have Wilkerson Richardson, Williams as cornerstone lineman in a 3-4 alignment and then sometimes just go for 3 and throw in some of the guys that we've picked up in the offseason. McClendon from Pittsburgh and a few guys that are just were either drafted or or have just been there as depth guys. Wow. Right. No one's gonna be able to run on us. And we still have a lockdown corner. I think our safeties are fantastic. I think we got faster at linebacker with the draft. I think we have the makings of a top flight defense. Definitely. So and can maintain it. And I think that's the Jake: thing that I'm excited about can maintain this. It's not just having one guy for one year. It's like now. These guys are right in the prime. I mean, they're all across the range, but most the oldest. Well, this is the line you're talking about. Right. Justin: Person's the oldest of those of the three big. Right. I mean, this is three big time players on on one line. Right. And they could just play those three on the line like three, four. Jake: I feel like first of all, I feel like they need a nickname. Justin: Well, they had a nice nickname. with a couple of years ago and they had snacks and they were the sons of anarchy because it was it was a Wilkerson, Richardson, they all ended in sun whatever. Oh okay. So they were like the sons of anarchy. I don't know what they are now. They always included Queen Cobles in that little group so I don't know why. I don't even know where he is. But so I I went back way back to last season and I started watching some of the condensed games. Jake: Yes, I just did one today. Which one do you watch? Justin: I've watched almost all of them now at this point. I've even watched some losses. I can't get myself to watch the Bills game.
00 Justin: I had it on the other day. I did watch a loss though, specifically because I wanted to see and it was the Raiders game. Jake: Right. Justin: I wanted to see Gino play. And man was he bad. Jake: Terrible. Justin: I mean he's got like, he's got an arm. Yes. He can run, but man is he stupid. Yeah. And you could tell like, our, this is why I'm happy that Fitz is back, even if it's for a year. The morale in the locker room. Oh yeah. Has had to let's just say it was at a five right because just whatever it's just hovering around The dive it's now at a ten. Everyone's getting blue. Everyone's excited like Everyone's pumped the receivers are pumped the running backs are pumped The line is pumped the defense is pumped like great our offense can play right cool. We don't have to carry the load Like they're going to have to carry the load, but still like in that Raiders game, we lost because our defense got, I think, deflated by the fact that it's went out so early, you went out in the first series and we were driving and he went out and then all of a sudden, like the air went out and they, you know, Kremarti basically got just burnt to shreds in that game. But. Just watching it back, it was like, man, I think they were deflated because they ran on us and they threw all over All over right whoever Rebus wasn't covering basically Jake: They were just so I went back and rewatch today because we'll talk about the fit signing now I guess because I I've actually been avoiding the games because it's hard for me to watch the games when the main player or the main guy isn't on our team because then I'm sitting there going, geez, because when you're watching good stuff, you're like, oh, God, we just don't have that guy. I watched the second Patriots game. Justin: Yeah, that's a fun one. Jake: So because obviously beating the Patriots and I, you know, again, I kind of, I remember the game a little bit like, oh yeah, we won. But I remember how it went down and there were some drives. where, just go back to the Mo, you know, the line, I mean, this- Brady had zero time. This scheme that they put to get to him was unbelievable, and that they just were all over him and hitting him every down, every down they were hitting him. They weren't sacking him, they sacked him like twice, I think. Yeah, he doesn't take sacks, he just falls and throws the ball near somebody. But man, they were on his ass. I mean, come in from everywhere and they would stand up everybody and they'd be like, alright, you don't know what's going on. Everybody's up. Everyone can come. Yeah, everybody can come and sometimes too, you know, those who think when they had Richardson going off to like, cover a guy, they were doing some weird shit and you could see he... Brady just didn't know what was going on. He just didn't know where they're coming from. And so to know that those three guys are continuing to do that, I'm very happy. I also went to watch because, hey, Fitz is back.
02 Jake: Beating the Patriots is a big deal. Whoever the quarterback is who can do that, I wanna go watch. It wasn't his best game by any means. He did lead fourth quarter. drives though. But, but it was, it was a good game. And it was, and it was, what I, I remember about him and I guess is why I'm, you know, flipping back and saying the positives to having Fitz back is he was, he was a leader of the team. He had a lot of chutzpah. I ran and would like make things happen when nothing was happening. And when it counted in the fourth quarter or overtime goes right down the goddamn field and then throws that fucking right to Decker game over. I mean winning in overtime against the Patriots. Justin: That was a lot of fun. That is like being there. And I watched that game over myself. Yeah. , the paths didn't try to win this game and watching it on TV I actually thought differently I thought oh we beat them they just made the mistake and you can tell is a mistake on TV yeah of not taking the ball and overtime they they Jake: they they made them say they also had a fumble return touchdown if they I hadn't happened didn't happen we would they would not on fits right right well he got hit Justin: Okay fine, but you can get hit not fight. He was your own ten yard Jake: But he was one of the feet he I think those were like snitches moves Gino moves like right? Justin: Oh inside your own 20 you're gonna fumble right? Jake: But again a guy got to him and he was trying to throw I mean it wasn't a it just didn't look like a what would Gino would do would would hold the ball way too long Justin: be 10, 15 yards back and then take a sack on like a second and 10. He'd take a sack and it would be like third and 15 or third and 25. You'd be like, well, you're fucked now. and the clock's still running, you could have thrown the ball out of bounds, However, that our skill list that we've been seeing in at like one and seven two and six and we may see some of these guys so I think Jake: that's this is my so I'm I'm of two minds I'm definitely playing the Gemini Because I think we have a better chance of winning a few games. It might be two or three more games.
11 Justin: over anybody else on the team. Jake: I mean. Well I'm saying last the- the Justin: I guess that's what are the way as a rookie one eight games when a me yeah with Rex Jake: But then you won but then the talent that's on this team I'm saying you swap out talent for talent take out fit put Justin: It's a talented team right just missing a quarterback and still is have well you have a starter at least You don't have a rookie second-round pick who played like shit his last two years of college and you're not sure. You don't have a fourth-round pick who played in a spread offense and you're not sure. You don't have a guy, Gino, who you're pretty sure is not the answer. Jake: I mean, it's very clear that the Jets organization... I mean, I don't know why he's around at this point. Because... Because he's... He's a rep away from the two guys I want to see play. Justin: Yeah but it's money, he's owed money, he's guaranteed money. So it's like we actually have to shave three million off of. Jake: Somewhere? Justin: Yeah because of the fits. We didn't have 12 million dollars. Jake: Well but it's spread over two years, it's a two year deal. It's a two year deal. Yeah go read up. Justin: I was of the opinion that. It didn't have the phony second year and we still I read that we had to shave three million dollars off of our somehow Jake: I assume that they well, they I think it's at the end of every month. No, it should be it should be Brandon fucking Marshall Like you've been whining complaining. Come on, buddyspecified Yeah, give back to get your boy back. Oh, no, just Justin: Like here, we'll turn some of this into a bonus and we'll just shove that off into next year or or never. You've been texting him and him not answering you. Right. So I think he made a bet Jake: with Antonio Brown on Twitter. Yes. Pink slip bet. So I think that's my the good side of it is I'm excited for this season, but this season only. I think we have a better chance of this terrible schedule of winning a couple more games. Let's call it three, four games. It doesn't really matter, but we're going to win a few more games. That's my short term, like fan. Like I don't want to sit and go to see a team that wins two games all season. So I rather watch us win a couple more games. But my long term Jets fan thinks this is stupid because my long term Jets fan knows exactly what will happen next April. And I predicted it last year and I predicted it. And I'm putting again this year. We'll be fucking sitting in April and all the commentary. about the draft will be, well, the Jets still have that question market quarterback. I want to be at a draft some year. Give me a fucking year. I think, I haven't been there since the first year of Sanchez. Right? So, when he played the first year, when we went to the draft the next year, people weren't going, well, the Jets still have a quarter, you know, question a quarterback. Justin: That's what we're going to be. Jake: We're no matter what, unless Fitz gets hurt in the first
02 Jake: or, or, or they put someone in for the last eight games and they blow it up, we're going to be sitting there next year. Not knowing and having a question at quarterback. So I guess The only way that would make me feel good is if this we just won the Super Bowl Then I'll fucking care how many questions a quarterback we have I'll go to a vacation I know you're in the Super Bowl and then Fitz gets a five-year and then we start for five years Both five hoes deal whatever. So I guess that's I guess that's my thing. It's like I'm just sick of being at the question mark. The Jets and some of the media and I got the personnel think that this is a WinNow team. It is a WinNow team. And that it's heavy. It is built that way. It's heavy loaded with stars. It's the stars and scrubs. And so they have lots of guys that they got to pay that are not going to be around for too many years. So let's get let's see what we can do just so happens. We have a terrible year. But we do have some good news. The one thing that might actually give us a ray of hope, which is that Brady is actually officially out for the first four games of the year. Yeah, he's out and honors. No, no more talk. It's the Garoppolo time. And for us to go the end of schedule, have a little bit of a chance. Justin: I'm trying to pull up like their schedule because I mean, I'm a little pissed that we don't get to play in the in the those first four games. I'm pretty sure they they do get to play. I think at least the bills, if not. Jake: If you just search Google for a schedule, it'll show you. Justin: Yeah, so they open Thursday night with the Texans. That's a tough defense. I don't know if they win that game. I know that whole- Jake: Well, we know JJ Watt, so- Still a tough defense. Yeah, okay. Justin: The Bills, and they get two home, they get three home games. So of course they get three. Of course they get three home games. They're gonna win two of them. They've got the bills, they've got Cincinnati. the is this right, no, they start the open with the dolphins in New England and I do and I'm not looking at the right focus schedule and idiot Jake: I'm an idiot that is the truth, and it Justin: , that as I was looking at a home against all the allies said their second ticket schedule, That's a loss. They can lose that. That's absolutely a loss. They should lose that. Yeah, Arizona's defense is that good, and their offense is good enough to score. Jake: It is good enough. After watching that. Justin: Then they've got the Dolphins at home. Then they've got the Texans at home. And then they've got the Bills at home. So of course, they have like three straight home games. Jake: So what we're hoping for is that... I'm gonna hope it for one in three one in three
01 Justin: I want the cardinals to be I think I want them to be oh and two I want the Cardinals to beat him and I want the Dolphins to beat him Jake: Yeah, I don't think dolphins gonna beat him, but I'd rather the Dolphins beat him than the Bills beat him personally Okay, just cuz I think the Bills are better than the Dolphins. I don't think the Bills better I think we're all kind of the same team I mean, I think that just dolphins and bills it is kind of the same team. It is very questionable Justin: I mean, they could be 0 and 4. They could be 4 and 0. They can't be 4 and 0. They could. I'll bet. Right. A lot of money right now. They're not 4 and 0. It's not out of this world that they figure it out. Jake: But I think the chance of the being 0 and 4 is a higher percentage than the being 4 and 0. Justin: I would not disagree with that statement. But they could totally be. I mean, they have the best coaching staff in the league. Coaches make a difference in NFL. Well, I just don't see them winning that first game. I could see them winning the next three. I would hope that by week three for that Thursday night game that JJ Watts back and the Texans defense is just like fuck off. You're not scoring. Right. Garoppolo. And you don't really have a running game because you don't. And. We're just gonna we're just gonna stuff ya and then right what can the text and score we don't know but well See if Brock the cock can brag Jake: And the Jets start off With you know, I would schedule is but the first four is not the toughest part. It's pretty it gets tougher Justin: I think angles are tough as hell. They've made the playoffs for what five Great ears or something. I agree, but we get them at home Better at Buffalo on a Thursday night. So right away on the road short week nemesis Fitzpatrick can't solve Rex Ryan. It's a fact. Maybe he figures it out. God damn it at the Chiefs. That's pretty tough That's tough. But you don't know what he's game chief. Yeah one o'clock home. That gives me a little hope but Jake: I think we can walk out of there two and two. I would hope so. At Steelers, at Cardinals, and then it starts getting a little easier. Justin: But those first six, god damn. That's a hard schedule. Jake: Yeah, well we're not going to make our predictions yet, but when we get back into it. Justin: And we don't play the pads until week 12. Yeah. That sucks. I'd rather get one of those games out of the way early. And why do you want to play them, you know, four year, like two of the last four or five games? Right. And the problem of Jake: actually having that the pats playing and losing to our division rivals means that they then have Justin: more division power. They're just gonna, they're just gonna be pissed off as fuck all year long. Right. They're gonna. Jake: Like the good news is the good news is there's no contact There is no throwing so there is the chance that they are rusty coming off that and I do believe that to be that Brady's rusty
00 Justin: He cannot talk to anybody can't do anything. He can't even As a matter of fact, he's not even allowed to invite a teammate over to yeah Jake: house to have a catch in the backyard so you can't so I think that that's four Justin: weeks of that yeah but you know he's gonna be thrown into some dude who's Jake: like retired like West hey West Walker buddy fine but what's one doesn't have the playbooks it doesn't have the whatever and doesn't have this time reading need the playbook yes really yeah wrote the playbook I don't he's been there for 15 years I'm just saying I think there's there's a problem is they played the Browns It'd be like since they came off and they played us on the like that first week. They play the Browns on their first week off. I just don't think that. Justin: I just don't think that. That there's going to be a rust factor for him. Jake: All right. Well, let's talk. Let's move on to our, to our other thing, which is our bet. Do you want to put our, want to put our real bet? Let me just talk about trading camp. Justin: We have a bet. We, I mean, it has nothing to do with the Jats. Yeah, just throw it out there. Jake: Just so everybody knows what it is. Justin: All right. So it's out there in the public. Yes public. I believe yes strongly. Yes that the Jacksonville Jaguars the jag win their division and Jake: You disagree. I think there's a chance they can it's the Colts. It's the Texans. It's the Titans It's the Jags and I think the Jags are Justin: ready to roll Jake: Alright, I don't think they built it up. I still think I got the talent I still think Colts I think the Colts and Texans ruled that ruled that division think the Texans are at good They were good last year I mean they weren't they were good enough to win a lot of games they did and Justin: Get and to win they didn't win a lot of games though to be fair. So what? Jake: But they now actually have a real quarterback. Is he? Maybe. Oh, he's better than the scrubs that they had playing. Is he? Yes. How do you know? Because I saw Brock, Brock the cock? Justin: Have you seen his cock? Brock the cock played in Denver with lots of talent around him. Well, is there no talented wide receiver on the one player on the best? One of the best. I'm probably in the top five. I'm one of the best. Well, that's good enough. That's it. What what else is there they don't have them running back? Oh Jake: Yeah, we didn't talk about that news he's in Miami Foster signing him Justin: I love that cuz I think that's like two weeks back will be broken in week three. Yeah, but There's no talent there for Brock He can't and rock the call back and and as good as their defense is and I think it is very good It's not Denver good from last year. No, he's not winning games turning the ball over. He's not winning games scoring 13 points Jake: I think in that I I think they can still they are still a contender in that division. I think the Colts Having whatever that's wide open and i'm putting i'm putting my eggs in the jacks And but if I but if it's wide open, I think it's Colts Texans Maybe Jags and then Titans.
01 Justin: I'm putting my eggs in the Jacksonville basket. I think they got some serious town on offense. Jake: So what's our other bet? So our other bet is Brady being Rusty. Maybe we won't make that our money one. Justin: But what does Rusty mean? Jake: Well... What does that even how do you define why can't we just compare it to his fourth fifth game last year? Justin: Let's compare the stats. It's it's not it's not apples to apples. Sure it is. It is not Just come out saying different season different teammates different everything. So what see what his percentages are his percentages completely no Touchdown percentages Oh, it's a comparison. It's not a good one now. All right, the opponent week five to be fair to you I mean, they're playing the Browns. They could have played in week five last year. Who the fuck knows Denver? I mean, I know they played Denver last year. I don't know when, but I mean, it's not really fair. They're playing the Browns. Jake: Right. Justin: And the Browns were terrible. Jake: Last year, fifth game, they played at the Colts. And then won 34. So both terrible culture terrible last year. Not a good defense. So there you go. I think this is totally comparable. I don't think it is. I think for his first two games coming back, there will be lower like QBR, lower percentage. And you will not see the typical. Justin: This first game on the road. It is on the second game backs at home. Jake: whenever that first home game is you know like that fucking world at Browns and then bangle see then bangles come to see them you know like them up who is a like them then he goes at Steelers that's good I like that then ad bills let's in the AFC East there's no Justin: no cupcake schedule for the AFC no it's tough here fucking brutal I'm when you have to play the NFC West in the AFC North Those are two really Jake: tough to be made a two locked out that they got fucking the Seahawks to come to them. Justin: Yeah, I wish that they would have asked holes there. Yeah, that would have been nice. That would have been nice. Wouldn't it? At least they have to go to Arizona. I think they almost Jake: they have everything that we have. So they're at Arizona. We're at Arizona. They have Arizona is a tough place to win. And it's a tough flight. It's Justin: It's a really hard place to win. Jake: Not winning at Seahawks, but it's like it's close. They're very very good. They're good. No argument Yeah, all right. So let's talk we got a couple more minutes Let's talk about training camp and preseason. I'm like, oh, like like three things You're looking to see at a pre-season camp and then like a preseason. So the first reason games up against Yeah, my jaguars. Yeah, jaguars. Yeah, jaguars. Can't destroy them in preseason. Doesn't matter. Justin: A number one single most important thing always say every single year no injuries injuries no injuries
03 Justin: I'm excited to see what for take a do on the field Absolutely once once we see some actual action. I don't think he's gonna play a whole lot Jake: I think they're gonna it's gonna be a very slow roll Curtis Martin. They're pretty smart. I was gonna say Curtis Martin Justin: Yeah, he's gonna he's not gonna play a whole lot. We're excited to see him on the field because I think he's a really good fit in the offense, in the Blau Powell mold. Like he can do everything. He can, I think he caught a hundred balls two years ago. And that's crazy. Jake: It's crazy. Justin: And Blau Powell is a similar player. And you, you, if you start watching those condensed games, once Powell got going, he got hot, the offense was different. Jake: Oh yeah. Justin: But he missed game. I think he missed the bills game in week 17. Whole different offense with when it was like, you know, he wasn't on the field that much which is weird It makes a huge impact when he is. Yeah, so but and he's so similar to Forte So I'm interested in seeing that always interested in seeing the rookies I want to see what Lee could do on defense where they're gonna play him what they're gonna do with him his speed I'm really interested in obviously seeing what Hackenberg can do and Petty I'd like to see more of them and less of Gino went once the games Actually begin and start I wouldn't mind seeing them with maybe with a number one Like you know like hey in game three like Fitz you you're gonna play the whole first half and then You know, maybe the, maybe the first drive of the third, and maybe we get to see one of those guys. Right. With the number ones. That would be fun to see, at least for me. Yeah, and just no injuries. Hopefully Mo kept himself in shape. Jake: I had broken legs, so he was... Understand. He's been running. You know, hopefully he's able to... The one who apparently did not look good yesterday was Fitz. He's... Three interceptions. It means nothing. No, I know it. It's totally nothing. But that's rust. That's total rust. That's real rust. That's a quarterback being rust. Tom Brady can be rusty. Tom Brady is Tom Brady. That's a whole different class. He's never had to be rusty before, so this is going to be some rust. You know what?
