20 Jake: Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast, the longest running New York Jets podcast period. I'm Jake. And joining me after seems like six to seven months although really hasn't been that long. I feel like it has been pretty long It's co-host with the most Justin Justin. I do Justin: I'm doing pretty well God be honest with you when it comes to my jets. I'm feeling pretty good. Yeah, baby The new theme song? Yeah, we just got the new theme. We ripped out that Rex. Ripped Rex right out. Good riddance. Jake: Yeah, whatever. Interesting side note. So I have been reading low collision crossers. Yeah. And the book about the 2011 season of the Jets. Yeah. So it was the season after the two back to back AFC championships. I actually finished it, sorry. And it was a long book, but if you're a Jets fan, it's almost a must read because it's just so in depth of the Jets and the organization and Rex and and Mike Penn and all these people who like especially like Rivas, Rivas shows up a lot and so is Kramarti. And man, it does not say a lot of good stuff about Kremarti. He is temperamental, kind of crazy. But, and Sanchez even, is a lot about Sanchez, I'll tell ya. From the outside looking in, it looked like Sanchez was one of the reasons we weren't sort of making it to the next level. From the inside looking out, it looked like it was a lot of him. I mean, that defense was unbelievable, and he was still going to games and throw pick sixes and stuff. And, anyway, so. Interesting. The toughest part about it was I remembered some of the games. In fact, the Baltimore game was at the toughest part about it. Also tough about it. You knew they lost because you knew that you're reading a book about history Justin: and you know what already happened. Yes. Oh, so because you were there. Sorry. Jake: Because you were there and you were like, oh, I remember that. Well, they'd be getting ready for that game. They'd be like we're getting ready for the Baltimore game and we're gonna go down Baltimore It's a Sunday night and you're like, oh shit. I remember that game. We got fucking clobbered and we did remember that It was the bike first play of the game He fumbled it in the end zone like or he fumbled it and they picked it up ran in the end zone Justin: Baltimore didn't do much in that game me Jake: No, and that was the thing that deep and the divide between the defense and offense is real folks anyway So we're back. We got some news. We don't have a ton of time, but we'll get something out there and then Okay, and then we'll get on to it. We definitely a couple things the The the schedules can be released next week. Yeah, so schedule me bitch But you're traveling until when next week. You're back on Friday. I'll be back on Friday
01 Jake: All right, so they might release it so we might get a podcast in next week talk about schedule But then the week after we have to get a draft Podcast yeah, usually the draft is a big pod. So yeah, do that. So we'll have to a draft pad a draft pad Justin: You know what? I want to talk about today on our agenda what I really want to focus a little bit on this on this secondary Free agent market that we've been participating in here. Okay. I mean you highlighted it with Steven Ridley. Yes And I want to talk about some of these other guys that we've signed. You know, I think the last time we talked, we had made the big splash moves. We talked Reavis, Cromartie, Screen and Gilcrest. Yes, we did. Beyond that, I don't know if we had signed James Carpenter yet. I don't think we had. And he's projected as a starting guard for us. Nice. So, you know, we're paying him like a starting guard. He ought to start. Hopefully, you know, one of the other two youngins can win out that job because we did resign Willie Cologne for another year, but to not a whole lot of money guaranteed $65,000. So that's like a pure safety net type of thing. Um, we'll see what happens in the preseason when the competition starts to arise. whether it'll be Winters or whether it'll be, what's the other guy's name? The guy who ended up this season. Can't even remember. That's how good he was at left guard. Hmm, that's a bad one. All right, so James Carpenter, four years from Seattle. Starting guard, I think. Pain, I'm like one, like I said. Ridley. One year flyer on Steven Ridley, only 26 years old, running back from New England, like a million bucks basically, 1.2 million. I think that's a fair enough flyer. I know he's coming off the ACL. Jake: Do you feel like that's the end of the backfield now? No. I think there's a rookie in here somewhere. There's a draft pick for sure. Okay. Justin: And... I don't even think that the Ridley money is such that he's a lock to make the roster Interesting because I don't I don't really see him Absolutely making the roster. Oh really? Yeah, I mean he's coming off the ACL. It's a one-year deal There's no guaranteed money in it like literally none 80 grand so Don't I don't see this being an absolute he's on the roster type of move He may not even be ready for the beginning of the season. You never know what the ICL I feel like this is a this is a Jake: Yeah, it's a flyer. It's a fire a flyer and a show me thing like this guy. He's not old He's not in he's he's got in the running back game. He's got to three more years that he could be dominating style 26 to 29 stylistically Justin: that's a word. Yes, no, I don't think he's any or much different than Belal Powell, for example.
03 Justin: I think he's more like Chris Ivory. He's a big he's a big dude. He's not quite Chris Ivory big. But he's, you know, Balal Powell's a straight ahead runner. Chris Ivory's a straight ahead runner. Steven Ridley's a straight ahead runner. I feel like I want a little bit more slash and go quick dude, catch pass maybe, kind of guy. I know Powell has good hands, but I'd like to see a guy out of the back field who maybe can catch a dump down pass. Jake: Another side note on vacation last week, because I was caught. in a desert island with terrible Wi-Fi. So I'm like, what am I going to watch when I go to the gym? Go to the gym. And I'm like, oh, I'll watch some game rewind. So I downloaded and rewatch the entire Super Bowl. Oh, yeah, the Super Bowl was a great game. I know. It was. And even watching it, I was like, oh my god. I couldn't believe how the game, I knew the way it ended, obviously, because I watched it. But I couldn't believe while watching it that it was going to end the way that I knew it was going to end. Crazy. I just couldn't believe it. But watching Marshawn Lynch like just watching. I know he's great. I mean, I don't rewatch Seahawks games I watch them, but I never rewatch them. So in this way I just oh, I don't know I'm all for having a smash mouth or a couple smash mouth Justin: But Lynch is special because he's smash mouth and he'll run around you and he'll catch the ball out of the backfield They'll split him out. Why on that last drive and the first play was him 30 yards down the field. Yeah, anyway, so Ridley that'll be interesting re-signed Leger doozable for some depth on the line Kevin Vickerson and Joe Mays I think are two very interesting signings Vickerson could be a potential Ellis replacement on the line and always picked up his fifth year option who are you talking about? Not Alice sorry I'm thinking I'm talking Kendrick Alice who went to the Giants oh no I'm talking I'm thinking Wilkerson? No. Who are you talking about? Copples. Okay anyway thanks for being a Jets fan. Joe May's another interesting guy you know a linebacker interesting was highly touted like guy out of college. I don't think his career's really worked out that way but these are again low-end guys fill out the roster guys maybe not even make the team guys so we have we have that going on in the secondary market I already mentioned Willie Cologne Stephen Bowens another lineman who's been around the block for a little while and then a couple of you You know, younger. kind of backup flyers, Jamari Latimer, as an inside linebacker, I imagine he'll make the team, and a couple other guards. Nobody really worth mentioning there in terms of name recognition. But again, I think a pretty good job, hindsight being 20-20 though, a year from now we can say. Worst ever. Yeah.
00 Justin: What a waste of money that Buster screen was. Or man, Crow was really over the hill or whatever. Right. Because looking back at last year, it's like we really didn't do a whole lot of impactful moves in the end. We thought we did. It was like, all right, Decker, fine. But. CJ, CJ2K, and Mike Vick. And then what else did we do? I mean, nothing in the secondary market, which is weird, he saved all this money, which allowed McHagnon to go out and just be like, I'm retooling everywhere. Jake: So just buy the numbers, three corners, three guards. Two inside linebackers, two defensive ends. A tight end. A tight end. Callen Davis, that seems like a weird one. That seems like a what? Justin: Yeah, it'll be a competition for like the third tight end spot. Jake: But let's talk, let's get into like one of the bigger ones. I mean, as we talked about Revas and all them before, and we're still excited. Did Uh, so very excited, but let's have a little bit did I thought Justin: Did we not involved in that conversation that we were just having? No Jake: What do you want to say? Justin: Rike do the you all right. I guess I feel you wanna say I don't think he's that good You don't think it's that good. No, I think he's a fumbler and I think you know, he's physically he's not a fumbler I think he's a fumbler. It's just as it is not that's cuz he gets benched when he fumbles right because he's a fumbler Yeah, I think he got his clock cleaned against Against Baltimore a few years ago in the in New England. That's New England. New England bench is running back. Jake: Wasn't a 1200 something yard season once. Right. Justin: That's like all right. Jake: I like these. I like these young. doesn't catch the ball. No. Justin: And if you think about the offense, he come out of like he should have caught more balls. Right. You think like that, unless that's just not what he does. Well, that's what I mean. I feel like this is not this is a total flyer. Total flyer. If he's anything decent, whatever. But I personally don't think he's any better than Boal Powell. I think Powell is an underrated running back in the NFL. He's got a lot of good skills. He can... He falls forward. He doesn't fumble the ball. He can catch the ball. He can make guys miss. He's a good player. Jake: Don't think he's anywhere the size this guy is. Justin: Size Schmise. He's a good runner. Yeah. I think Blob how is better than people think I think we're gonna draft a guy as I think you should do every single fucking year You should draft a running back between the third and the fifth draft a guy after running back because they have such short lifespans in the league I mean look at Cincinnati It's like an embarrassment of riches with that running back Situation and they pay them almost nothing because they're like second third round guys with
02 Justin: with Giovanni Bernard and Jeremy Hill wouldn't you love that? Yeah that's awesome. All you gotta do is draft them in the third round back to back years you're and hit on the good draft picks. I'm just saying, you can do it. I mean, LaVie on Bette was like a third round pick. Bernard was the second round pick. Jeremy Hill was the second round pick. Jake: Do you want to discuss any of the NFL news? Like we got it. Well, Hernandez is going to jail. Peterson's back. Hey, today he's back. I don't know if this really matters. Not today. More of a fantasy thing. Alright, let's talk about the Amaro and Rex. So there was an interview with Amaro, our second year guest, Titan, now. And he was saying how the there was no one held accountable in the locker room. Yeah. And kind of pointing your finger up towards the, you know, the sky. No, up towards upstate New York. And Rex took took offense and he was like swearing like that fucking guy. Like he pulled the total Rex and even did the we'll see how he plays when we play him. Like he even did the like, we're going to get you on the field. Which I kind of like because now Rex's banter, we can get rocked up. I mean, other teams used to get like huffed up because Rex like Patriots played us very difficult because he would always say something about them. Not going to bam, you know, kiss his rings or whatever. We're not goinging to be like, yeah, fuck you. We're going to come get you. Hey, I think, um, Maro should shut the fuck up, but Rex, man, Rex being Rex, he's, uh, he's outie. I do, I feel like most of those guys are toxic. Um, we also have this and it to the the way we do it. Yep. I toxic. We also have Revas headed to the White House. Yep. I asked you a question this morning because we were making a joke about like, can't Revas because he's gonna be reunited with the Patriots. Right. All the people- people were gonna come back and we were making the joke like we should just tell him to like- interesting topic. If he did that, did it in public, he'd go to jail. Would you rather lose Reavis for a year? Who's on our team? Do I have to hash my jokes? They I So what is the best team contender for the playoffs? Justin: I'm of the boogie, you don't worry, you make your team as powerful powerful
19 Justin: You're you should really like if you were to say okay you get one year and Tom Brady can't play But you can't have the real reviews. I'd say, say no really well revus on the field because I Feel like that's the best chance for the Jets to win And I don't care about all the other games that Tom Brady's not playing in because they're gonna do what they're gonna do They might lose Jake: And we can win 9 games. Justin: Yeah, I feel like we have a the better chance of winning 9, 10, 11 with Revus. But then they win 13. Maybe he's getting old. Eventually he'll die. Well he's getting old. He's gonna be like 38. Look what happened to Manning. I mean he's still really great but... Jake: Mean he's slowing down for sure. Apparently Tom Brady wants to play to like 45. He wants his body's gonna Justin: Say one thing his body's gonna go the other way. He's Tom a terrific. You can't stop him She's a little tired amount now that she's retired Yeah, chisel Chisel terrible Jake: I don't know Tom and Jizzle I just really want I just really want Tom gone gone Baby like as much as Reeve is coming back to the Jets Well, I was in like the same room in the middle. I'm literally sitting you know, I was in the same room as him Oh, it's Tom Brady. Yeah, you were and I could have killed him. We did like I could have every man should literally go to act just Jettkingdom and literally tweet you nasty comments because you were in the same room with them and you could have killed them. Could have killed them. The problem is you wouldn't have made it out a lot. I would have also died. Because you were in Boston. I would have also died. Justin: A very brutal death. Jake: Oh yeah. They would have beat you. Like, goaltured. Yes, old school, old school. Yeah, they would have killed you, but it would have been good for us. Justin: I mean, I could have done it for the team. Yeah, you could have taken one for the team Jake: How about this? I wasn't cheering Justin: It was very disappointed. I was slouched in my chair. I should be like damn you Tom was so happy they were so excited and I was like fuck Tom Brady fucking brady Jake: All right, so let's get to some I'm really have the draft come up to the White House Justin: Yeah, we are talked about we don't care right he's going away. Yeah, I don't have a problem Go get your as's
01 Jake: And I was saying, have a review come back. I'm Because that's you know who's around all what did they say about him? I mean just unbelievable just the work ethic the what the Like that just does things that no one's ever done before that just The most amazing. I mean it was literally just like reading like the Bible gosh. Yes, gosh fast just what the coaches felt about him. So do we think that he's going into the Hall of Fame as a jet? Yes! It really depends, it really depends what he does in these next four. Like, if he... gets back to some playoffs and gets into some probably with hard with the corner. Cause like, what do you do? Win the game with a pick. Justin: I don't know. Dion Sanders is kind of first ballot. Charles Woodson first ballot. There's first ballot. Yeah. I think champ Bailey will probably get in there real quick. Jake: How they do that when they do the, um, Justin: longevity is the thing with a corner. Just if he can stay healthy for another five, six years and be really top Not right. Like I could retire at the right retired retire at the right Who Ike Oh Ike Turner. Sorry who? Jake: Wow, you're the worst Wow. No, I turner I turner. Yeah. What no he do Justin: Now I can't tell you you've got one word right you've got the first I got a bit Ike right Ike the corner from from the Steelers. He's not making the hall Jake: Um, Palomolo will though. He'll make the holo thing. Yeah, I think he will be. Justin: He retired and the Steelers threw him on their like, retired list. So like, when he comes back, he's a Steelers. If he wants to come back, he's a Steelers. Jake: And they would have to release him and he'd be a free agent. Uh, who do you think gets in first? Reed or Palomolo? Who do you think was better? Ed Reed. Yeah, not even a question. Actually, I think it's not even close. Justin: And they're not in the same year either, so I don't know. Jake: Where is Reed now? He retired. Reed did not play last year. He didn't play last year. Justin: Doesn't matter. He didn't play. It was count. OK, as not as that question. Jake: If he actually goes in, if Reed goes in the year before, I think it'll be tough to bring Paul Mollin. Justin: So Ed Reed. Did win a Super Bowl? Yep, so did Palma. And Palma was a couple but he did get one which was the thing, right? He didn't have one. Right. He wasn't on that first Ravens team that won the Super Bowl.
02 Justin: So I think you'll see a bunch of these Ravens go in sort of stacked. Right. You know, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed will be... the the two that'll go on. Ray, this was that way before. Just one year before. He's only been retired. Really? I feel like he he's been around a long time. He's on TV. And then you might see Torell Suggs and Hulodi Nada too at some point. I think Reed gets in before Palomolo just because they're both I think first ballot guys. So Reed, I think Palomolo getting first ballot. Yeah, both will, I think. Yeah, because of the impact that they had at their position for the teams that they played for that one Super Bowls. Right. You know, just memorable plays that they made. Reed was more of a. Reed was more of a well rounded player and a playmaker. Palma was just like a playmaker is flashy, but he made a lot of mistakes you can it would always show like man the man Palma was in the wrong place there. Cuz he's trying to make this big play and it's like well He got beat over the top buddy. You guessed wrong. He was a guesser. He guessed wrong big hitter, too, bitch Jake: All right, let's talk. Let's wrap it up in a couple minutes here. We'll be back next week We got draft we do we have the draft coming and you we We're still sitting pretty with we haven't traded away any picks. No trays No anything's going on, but there's a lot of room Ridge going around. I think we're actually in the wrong spot Like six is tough because six is like You don't control the board like there's a rumor And the mock drafts have been in. Everything from, it started like weeks ago where everybody has picking Marietta. Marietta. Everybody. Has us picking Marietta. Everybody. It was Winston, a bunch of guys, us picking Marietta. Right. And then recently it's been flipping like he's been going higher and higher and then he flips up to like, and sometimes I've seen people flip him to Tampa Bay that first. Justin: Yeah, I stuck with Winston. Really. Yeah, I think that that's who they're. Drafted in. They should just go get their drafting him. Maybe they're doing this dangle a thing now just to see what they can potentially haul in, like if they could get that, you know, that RG3 Godfather offer that St. Louis got, maybe they would think about it. Right. But I think they're picking Winston. Mario will be interesting because I don't know where he's going to go. I feel like he can fall all the way down.
02 Jake: I, and right now, we'll go, we'll come back and talk about the draft, but right now, and we'll have to reverse. He's like a goofus. We'll have to eat our words when he gets drafted, but I kind of want him off the board. Like I kinda just want him gone. I don't want him off- I don't want him off the board. Oh I want him gone. I don't want him off the board. I don't want to have the booing when they pick like, you know, white or whatever. Here's why I don't want him off the board. Justin: Cooper, what? Cause I want him there so I can make a trade. Oh at 6 trade down with uh... Sure! With the Eagles. Anyone. The Rams at 10. Jake: Move down four spots to ten. Rams don't need him. Rams, why? Justin: They have, what's his fate? Nick Foles? Really? Just gonna roll with Nick Foles and be like, this guy who's never played a full season, we're just gonna roll with you? That's who they traded for. They traded the number one overall pick in the draft for him, not like, like, I mean, they basically gave up on one quarterback to go with another one. Right. Maybe? It might be good. I feel like the Rams are in play there. I think the Eagles are the only one. Yeah, I mean, he definitely covers him, but that's moving way down to 20, and I don't know if I want to go down that far. Jake: In the year that we drafted Gino, Gino was supposedly at some point in the top five. Justin: He was supposed to be a top of first round pick. Jake: Right. And then he just dropped and dropped and dropped. I think this is a situation that could mirror that. So is Marijota a, I don't want him in the first, but I take him in the second, or is he, I don't want him on my team? I don't want him. Yeah. Justin: What about Winston? What about Winston Falls? That one you'd... That one I think would be hard to pass up. Really? I think he's got like a pro game. I think he needs work. I've watched him play a few games in college and he's... To me he's very like... If you get him on his toes, he's gonna throw some picks. And I've seen that already and I don't like it. We have that on our team. We've had that for a while now. We have not had a guy like that. I watched Notre Dame a lot and they play Florida State and I watched them play and Notre Dame should have won that game. Jake: They didn't. They they did. I think that's the only game I watched. And it is one. Justin: Didn't you watch the didn't you watch the like National Semifinals? Oh, maybe where they played each other because Winston and Mario to play each other. Jake: But I feel like I tuned in and you have been telling me just watch Winston. He's not a pro quarterback. And then I watched him walk right down the field and I was like, wow, he looks like he's doing exactly what he should be doing. I don't know. I have watched a lot. Justin: You put I watched you get a little pressure in his face. You make him move his feet a little bit. And he's throwing picks, left and right. And he's throwing off his back foot. And in college, you can throw off your back foot if you have a pro arm. But not in the pros. The defense is way too fast. You can't be throwing off your back foot if there's some guys at your feet or whatever your throw, step and fucking throw.
02 Justin: The other thing I learned with watching these Gruden things which shed a little light on the Gino situation is is Gruden started to talk about all these quarterbacks in college that never huddled. Right. And you know he really questioned Marioda and he's like you never huddled when it was the last time you huddled and he's like never. He's like in high school a little bit not really never huddled. Like that's no good. He's like well, that's a lot like Geno Smith and I was like, oh just learn something about Gino I didn't know that yeah and It's a thing man If you're gonna run a real offense and you're huddling and you've never done that before and you're supposed to be the guy leader In the huddle barking out orders and you've never done that before and these guys are supposed to listen to you as a rook That ain't gonna go over very well. I don't think it is. Trust me. That's a big thing. Jake: Fine. But what you see at the Geno is not his lack of huddling. Well, I think it's a. It's a type of throwing. Justin: But it's a it's a timing continuity thing where as opposed to. I think Geno is better in in. Two-minute drill situation right less thinking more reacting when you start huddle eggs and Like there's thought involved like you have to get the play from the sideline as opposed to just walking up and like a couple hand Signals and the play is called and it's simple. It's like Z right Y Zebra banana 52 X 40 A hundred different words right and like what's your cadence and like all that stuff is opposed to just I'm standing in the shotgun I'm gonna drop my arm and you're gonna snap the ball No, I'm gonna go about a whole lot of shit, right? And I didn't have to just remember a 15 word play and now it's like well What the fuck are we running again? And now I'm standing under center with my hand on a guy's butt and it's like you've never done that shit. That's never good Some of them like it, I'm sure. But still, you know? I think it makes the world a difference, and I almost feel like it's a bit of an excuse for Gino. I give him a little bit of a... Jake: Oh my god, you're not giving him a third year to show you, are you? Justin: Yeah. I think one... One, if this was a third year with Marty, I think I'd be like, yeah, I know. I want to see what he can do in the preseason in a new bit of a new system. I feel like this is the mistake. This is the mistake we've done every time. There's no one else there. There's no one behind him to take the job. And I don't want any of these rookies to, to, I don't see. anything like perfectly you know perfect out there no situation there's no it's Jake: only been one pick of a good quarterback in the last four years of like a guy who's like the guy and say Andrew Luck it's the only guy you can think of that the guy that like they got the pick it's the quarterback no questions asked name another in the last four years of drafts
00 Jake: Are you saying like first overall like that picked a picked it? Well, yes the first two rounds Justin: How about the guy who's been to two Super Bowls and one one of us through the pick at the end of the game How about the guy who's won a Super Bowl? Yeah, and what the only guy who's won a Super Bowl right? Jake: But that wasn't a using your first round picked a bigger quarterback that was picking a flyer and getting lucky Justin: I don't think tanhills all that bad. Yeah. Well, they're talking about trying to sign him I don't think that would be a bad idea. Jake: I hope they do because I don't think he's that good either. I don't worry about him. Justin: I think Tannell is decent. Who? Tannell is decent. Yeah. I think he's decent. But that's it. I mean there are no perfect guys out there. No perfect. RG3 not turning out to be perfect or groundbreaking or anything like that. Although that was an injury thing man. He was so good as Ricky here. Holy shit. If they didn't ruin him by keeping him out on the field in that playoff game and then letting him rush back He that was ah, that's a big what if in his career Cuz if you didn't stay in that playoff game Which you shouldn't have been in after he hurt himself the first time limping out and then on that crappy field and then hurt himself again And then rushed back for week one because Adrian Peterson could do it. Right. Clearly the guy's a freaking machine. Like that's a huge what if. What a big like fork in the road for RG3. I mean he was special. That was almost unstoppable that rookie year. Jake: I will say that my feelings about Gino get muddied. the more time between I've seen him play. I need to go back. And the problem is when I go back and I watch a chess game, I usually go back and watch the Dolphins game because it's the game that he did play great in. And then I convinced myself, well, that's the that's the guy. What was his work? Oh, the Bill's game. So I mean, the Bill's game. Absolutely worse. Yeah. Yeah. To see him play those first five snaps and throw four interceptions. Four interceptions. Yeah, oh man anyway So what's our schedule for the next couple weeks? We have a we have we have to do a draft one Yeah, that's all we really have to do. I have to do a draft one. All right, but need a schedule Well, what are you gonna commit to cuz every year you don't want to commit to it. I'm gonna do Justin: Six I'll commit to a player in the first round and then I'll commit to positions beyond that Jake: Okay, last year I think I like I had like all not all rounds. I had like the first three Yeah, and you're totally nailed it. Oh god You know who I picked and who I had pick in our first ODB Who did I have? I don't remember. It wasn't as good. I'll put in more effort because I like it. I Like to try to pick it out Justin: Didn't have Calvin Pryor. Jake: Did not have Calvin Pryor. I had ODB. Can you imagine where this team would be with ODB right now? Justin: Without Brandon Marshall. Jake: Well, we'd have ODB. Justin: Right. I'd rather have him. Jake: Than Brandon Marshall. Without him.
