11 Justin: are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way. Can't wait! Jake: Welcome to the J- Kingdom podcast longest-running New York Jets podcast ever period period end of sentence and of sentence I'm Jake and joining me for the 145th time my nemesis for today grumpy old bastard Justin how you doing bust bustin I called you bustin yeah I did how you doing I know how you doing you're a grumpy fucker. You're a grumpy motherfucker, motherfucker. Justin: You expect me to talk after that? Talk it up, baby. I don't like you. Jake: Alright, well, let's talk about some jet shit, because some stuff has happened. NFL and otherwise. Justin: Is this jet stuff? I don't see a whole lot of jet stuff. Jake: Well, they all affect us. We got an agenda today. We have some... NFL rule changes that got passed over the owners meeting last week Have a pass a jet head coach who might be headed somewhere I can talk about that they can actually talk about the bounties because there's been some new released information about the guys I think it's a little bit interesting new Nike uniforms touch on that Jets might be headed back to hard knocks good or not good and As of this morning a schedule was leaked 2012 schedule was leaked including well the preseason we know and Is a few is a real thing, but then it looks like it's been leaked I don't know how good this is I feel like every year it gets leaked and every year it is pretty darn accurate so We'll talk a little bit about the leak to get scheduled But I don't know I don't want to I don't want to like make predictions or anything But we'll talk about what we like about it what we don't like about it And then we'll wrap it up, so let's get started with some rule changes, okay? Tell me some stuff that got done. New rules that passed or rules that failed? Justin: Yeah, well I don't care about things that failed. Okay. Well, this thing makes sense. The overtime rules are going to actually be the same for the regular season and the post season. Do you like the regular, do you like the overtime rules? The new ones? Yeah. Jake: the one that it's the each person gets one chance to to score and kick a field goal, but after that, anybody scores in any way they win. Justin: You almost said it correctly. Okay. If the team who gets the ball first scores a touchdown, the game is over. That's correct. If the team that gets... AKA Tim Tebow to... Whatever. If the team that gets the ball first scores a field goal,
03 Justin: then the other team gets the ball. and can score it. Can win. That can win or score a few. Or tie. And then you keep going. And then the next person who scores wins. Uh-uh. Yeah. Listen, listen. Right. If they don't, if the next person gets the ball. I don't see what's so hard about this. It's really not that complicated. People were very confused. How about you? Forget people. Yeah. Like you have a good brain in your head. Yeah, pretty pretty simple. No, it is simple. Here's the deal Yeah, you get the ball. Yeah, you score a touchdown. Great win the game great You get the ball you score a field goal. You haven't won yet Oh, so I scored a field goal. You haven't won yet. I haven't won. No, I never won. Yeah ball off Wait, I got three points. I didn't win. No. Oh, I didn't win. You kick the ball off kick the ball Your opponent gets the ball. Okay, and what happens they can Drive if they score a touchdown they beat you if they score a field goal, then they win immediately Yeah, they won. They got the ball. They scored a touchdown skill or field goal. It's time. You know you play Yeah, now you play if they don't score a field goal games over That's what's fucked up because it turns into this thing of like where if what's so fucked up. They got the ball They didn't score they lost They were losing by three, they got the ball, they didn't score. Because that's not the game don't, games don't end. Jake: Hold on. Easy, compster. I'm waiting for you to say something profound. The games in a normal game, games don't end at the point where someone doesn't have where... doesn't score a point. They end at a time when the points are over. So they've gone from this sudden death to sudden death, sudden death light, which is, it's sort of sudden death, but you get one last Justin: shot if it, if you... Did sudden death make sense? Yes. Really? Why? Because that had nothing to do with time. That only has to do with... Well, no, it was just 15 minutes to do it. Well, yeah, but the first person who scored won. And that was it. So this is not all that different. It only gives the team who happens to not win a coin flip the opportunity to get the ball if the team that they're playing against scored on their first drive. It's not that hard to understand. Jake: I get it from a competition. I liked the sudden deafness of a game. Justin: It wasn't fair to the team that lost the coin toss, kick the ball off, and that team just... They didn't have a defense? That team returns the kick to the 50. They don't have a special teams? It's just not fair. Why? It's not. Well that's completely not how the game works. Wait, they don't have a special defense? They don't have special teams? That's not how the game works at all. Like if you kick off, well if you kick off to start the game and the team goes and scores, you haven't lost. Right, because you've played four quarters. Yeah, I don't like sudden death. I just don't like the fact that a team doesn't have the chance to be on offense.
05 Justin: But they have the chance to be on defense. Well, yeah, but that's half, it's a third of the game. That's a third of the game. I don't know. Jake: The whole experience that the, here's why it's good because the offense I think is given much more help by penalties and whatever nowadays with holdings and can't do this and can't do that and it's only gonna get worse. So offense is having a natural advantage now. It's not a 50-50. city. It's not 50-50 defense offense. The offense has an advantage and so the way I get spent to be a good thing is if the offense has an advantage, let's call it 51-49, then you have to give the other team a chance to Justin: have that advantage. I really don't see why they can't just do what college does. College does it perfectly fine in my mind. Okay, I don't even know how to call it. I don't watch college football. off. It's tied at the end of the game. Each team gets the ball at the 25 yard line of their opponent. They just get it at the 25. You just get the ball there. You get a series. You can score. You score a touchdown. You score a field goal. Whatever. The next team then gets the ball at the other team's 25. and they play and they play until one team scores more than the other. That's crap. They artificially just put them at a point? Yeah, they put them at the 25. They say you are in scoring position. You're either gonna score a field goal or you're gonna score a touchdown. And that's it. That's horrible. Why? What's the difference? Because that's not football. There's nothing. At least... It's totally football. It's giving the team the ball. Jake: When in football do you just not naturally but unnaturally get put at the 25 to score? It's to speed it up. Justin: It's you're gonna score but that that is the worst you can play defense and get a turnover you can Do whatever you got to do, but they're saying you're gonna either score field goal You're gonna score touchdown go until one team scores more god Jake: Nobody's listening to you because that's the worst part of soccer and hockey Which is they take this entire game that people played this entire time and just one way and then they say oh It's an overtime, let's do something totally artificial that has nothing to do with the game. Let's make a scenario that actually doesn't have anything to do with the game. That is a scenario that doesn't exist in football. Justin: Well, hockey and soccer don't do that. Yeah, they do. They have... Well, they play overtime. They play overtime and then... Well, they play overtime and if nobody scores or wins, then they go to a shootout. kill the game. But I just think it's stupid. The idea of it. But that's an actual time-based thing. Like the NFL has taken time and thrown it out the window. Well, there's 15 minutes to score it. You're in favor of time. Yeah, but if 15 minutes go by and nobody scores, the game ends. Yeah. Well, it doesn't sound like you're very happy with that either. You like the idea of a timed quarter. I like the idea of a timed quarter. You would just prefer play eight minutes. Or 15. 15 is a lot to ask. Of who? Of the players who just played 60. Fuck em! Oh, take your 10 million dollars a game and go fuck yourself.
01 Justin: Enjoy that Thursday night game where you're playing the fifth quarter. Tough, shitty! Tough, titty, shitty! Whatever. Let's move on. Jake: Alright. I just want it to be based on the game. At least this hasn't changed. It's not... based on the game. That'd be like, why don't you just set everybody up at the one and say, run it four times? At least this is... Justin: It's not the one, it's the 25. It's not like you have one play score, you have to actually run off. Jake: So it came up twice in the playoffs. They put in rule last year for the playoffs only. It came up twice, two games. And once, it was a one game breakaway touchdown, and once they went into overtime... And then it ended in, right? Then the Giants game went into overtime, right? And then ended with a- Justin: As long as the first team doesn't score, Then it's in- Then it's next person's score. Yeah, next person's score was wins. I think that's fine, again. I think it's perfectly fine. You're the one who had a conniption about it. Jake: I just liked the idea of the sudden death. I get that the offense has a better advantage and that there was an actual, there was a statistical anomaly that said that it was something like 51% of the time since a certain period of time, like over the last 15 years, that the person who won the toss actually got a better advantage Justin: and that was immediate. You shouldn't, you shouldn't just because you win a coin toss, you shouldn't. have an advantage. Alright, what else passed? Um, some crap about kicking a loose ball, it's a penalty, you lose a down, whatever. Um, the too many men on the field thing passed, so like what, I thought this was like a stroke of genius by the Giants in the Super Bowl where they had 12 guys on the field in one of the last couple of plays of the game and... They, you know, the Pats ran off like six, seven seconds running a play and all they got was five yards. So they moved from like the 45 to the 50 but lost like eight, ten seconds. At that point, eight seconds is more valuable than five yards. Way more valuable than the five yards. So at this point, the refs are going to be able to make a decision, which is if... The offense is lined up for more than three seconds and there are 12 men on the field and that 12th man is not Darting towards the sideline to get off the field. They will blow the thing dead Assess the five yards the clock won't run if someone's darting towards the sideline I guess they gotta say he's trying to get off so they gotta run the play It's gonna this is gonna lead to niche another issue. I don't I don't like I don't like rules that are and if Yeah, ref has to like count that they're in the stance for three seconds one two eight. Yeah, he's running running now No, he's not he's not running. Yes. He is. I use totally fucking running This is gonna lead to an issue but bad I think it's better than what it was where you could just throw 18 men on the field Jake: It was a little bit the end of the game. It was a loophole. I think I read somewhere that before Justin: Before an instance so back before the clock Like a penalty couldn't end the game, right?
01 Justin: This was a rule that's been in place for, I don't know, 10 or 15 years where if the team who has the ball commits a penalty and the clock goes down to zero, the game's not over. Well, it used to be the game was over, so I read Buddy Ryan, Rex's father, genius, that he is, decided that they had to punt. He was coaching the Eagles. They had to punt the ball with like four seconds left. OK. And he decided to instead of risk getting the pump blocked or having somebody return the pump for a touchdown on him, he would he ran 14 men onto the field to kick the punt. And the game was over So they Just find that really funny Alright, so alright moving on Moving on anything. I've done some rules for defensive plot defenseless players making blocks This one I really particularly like the automatic reviewing of turnovers via instant replay So just like scoring reviews, like scoring plays, we're automatically subject to an instant replay. Any turnover now is subject to an instant replay. So a coach no longer has to waste a challenge on a turnover, which makes me think, what are these coaches actually going to have to challenge? Jake: Right. Very few things. What? I... I, I, when the instant replay came out, a friend of mine, Big Jet's fan, said to me, he's like, listen, if the, if what we're trying to do is get the truth, if the truth is what's important, what actually happened, then really any place should be instant replay. Justin: That's what it used to be. Right. There'd be a guy upstairs or a girl or whomever, and if there was something that looked questionable... They would say instant replay and they would review it upstairs Jake: Yeah, that's the thing is like this whole going over to the booth and doing all that shit Like it just it's the time the reason they made it into challenge flags because they didn't want to have every because it's just that's something Justin: That failed they wanted to just have the person upstairs just review it again Right and they said no the person on the side or the replay they have to go into a little booth I don't like the booth. What's the point of the booth? Just, there's a guy upstairs with probably better equipment and like eight televisions around him. And he's already seen it 30,000 times. And can just get on a little microphone. Jake: He's already probably figured it out. Just get him a camera and then put him on the big screen. Sure. It'd be like, Bob, look it's fucking Bob, replay Bob! And he gets on and he's like, I replayed, it's like God talking. Justin: They don't even need to be in the stadium. It could be a person... Jake: Anywhere yeah, I want them in the stadium. They don't even I want they don't have to be in the riot I want them to be killed. Oh that too. All right. Anyway, so that's some of the rules Justin: Stuff got tabled but whatever we'll skip that Jake: Little news just because he's a past whatever they're talking about after the bounty programs. We get to all bounty talk bounty gate
00 Jake: Did you hear the Greg Williams speech? Yes, I did. I did not listen to it. Okay Was it really really bad? It's so hard to know without hearing every other speech. So if you just take it and listen to it, it sounds bad. We're gonna hit him. We're gonna hit him in the chin. Hit this guy. They talk about ACLs and I mean he does talk about like physically trying to. This guy's got a concussion. Let's see if he's okay. Let's hit him and hit him hard to see if. Thanks. Yeah, I know it. It's brutal. But I don't know if that's every goddamn, maybe Rex makes that speech every Sunday. Fucking killed Tom Brady, kill him, kill! I don't know what he does. So maybe it's the same. It seemed pretty brutal. That aside, they're talking about Parcells going in for a one year interim to the Saints. Just wanted to get your take on that. What do you think, like? First of all, isn't the point of the penalty to penalize the team? So just as a side note, if the point of the penalty is to penalize the team, okay, you take away their head coach. You ought to just go fucking throw in one of the best head coaches ever? Justin: That seems kind of like against the, like seems like what it's... I actually don't think, I mean, that's the brakes. You are saying you can't have your head coach. And who are. They to discriminate against who you can then hire as the head coach. I don't think you should have hit coach Well, they have to have a head coach. Yeah, welcome. Well, then they may as well just not play Jake: Yeah, no, that's not not play But I think they shouldn't have I think that for those games you have to from within the team Justin: They have someone has to step up like he got hit last year So the Saints are not allowed to hire anybody is what you're to replace him for the season. No I feel like they should have the people and the staff either the assistant or whatever. But now we're just talking titles because There's a difference. Well, if the defensive coordinator has to go be the head coach, who's the defensive coordinator? The assistant defensive. Then who's the assistant defensive? Jake: They have enough so there will be the ball boy, well eventually, the ball boy will be head bed ball. No, no. Justin: No, no. doesn't fly. I think they can hire whoever they have to hire and it just so happens that they have a guy named Bill Parcells who has a connection with Sean Payton and has said if they ask me I'll do it and I honestly don't have a problem with it because that's the brakes like it's Bill Parcells or it's Raheem Morris or whomever you know like they can hire some shit dick coach. But if they have the opportunity to bring in a guy who's really good, they should be able to do it. But is that really penalizing the team? Well, now you're putting a judgment on how good is the guy that they're getting. Well, I'm putting a penalty. I'm saying what's the penalty then? The penalty is that they don't have their head coach, who's a Super Bowl winning head coach. Jake: Another Super Bowl winning head coach. Justin: Yeah. Now. I mean, Sean Paine's been the, coach
11 Jake: I just feel like there's something it's kind of like I don't know, it's just like, it's saying, you're gonna go to jail, but then someone can replace you and do all the things. Like, there's a point of saying that person can't do it, and how is it affecting the team? To replace him, seems like- Justin: What you're? Saying. Saying is they shouldn't be able to,- I. Be able to hire a head coach. I, I. Because you can't say they shouldn't be able to hire specific head coach. So here's the thing, because what's that criteria? Jake: When, so I just, again, another rat hole. If a player is, if a player on the roster is suspended for four games, you keep them on the roster. Well, yeah. You can't bring in another guy to replace him because he's active on the roster. Justin: I think you can. Jake: Oh, you can? All right, well, then I guess that's what that is. It just feels like... It feels like you can't replace him because he's still actively he's there. He's not supposed to be playing but he's still there Justin: He's someone has to do that job So someone has to do that job, but that's what's your man down. Well And down but you're not a man down because there's no rules around how many coaches can you have? You can have 22 coaches. You can have 180 coaches. You can have four head coaches. This guy's the head coach. This guy's the assistant associate head coach. This guy's the associate assistant head coach. And this guy's the defensive coordinator slash head coach. Like, you can have a million coaches. I just- I just said that I have no problem with it. I really don't. Alright. There's something about it's like you're penalizing a team. It's because it's him. If they were hiring, again, if they were hiring- Oh, Raheem Morris just got fired by the Bucks because he's hot and they're gonna bring him in. You'd be like, yeah, whatever. Yeah, kinda. So it's not a fair, like... You're making a judgment on it. It's one of the irrational fans. You're being irrational, yeah. Oh wow! Jake: 145 episodes and you get to me being irrational? Yes! Okay, awesome! Justin: You're an irrational fan! You should... Jake: I think by the way oxymoron that's basically the same fanatics irrational rational Justin: Totally rational. I wanted to go down a different rat hole though. I'm Bill Parcells for like four seconds All right, it can't read are it kept you Grant want you know what grinds my gears It was grinding my gears that when this whole Parcells thing came out and like they were announcing it on ESPN And you know Parcells is looking to come in or they're looking at Parcells and they kept calling him, so they're gonna be able to bring in this hall of fame coach Bill Parcells and they kept labeling him. This hall of fame coach Bill Parcells Who just got n- just elected? Who didn't- who just didn't get elected to the hall. Neglected. Not in- meaning like it was John Clayton specifically. Who was like hall of fame coach bill parcells hall of fame or bill parcells and he said it like over and over and I'm like
00 Justin: Screaming at my TV. I don't know why I get upset about this. Wow, it sounds so irrational But I'm like scream like screening the TV did the TV hear you you asshole John Clayton He's not in the hall of fame as a matter of fact and then he's like here's and then in his next sentence He's like he's like he might not want to do this because it will postpone his hall of fame Credential like eligibility. I'm like you just called him a Hall of Famer and now you're saying he's gonna have to wait five years To get into the thing that you just had him in he's there But he's not there and he doesn't do it well like who's to say he's ever gonna get in so it sounds like that's your Jake: That's why you have the lucky of the week Justin: Perfect Rex Ryan my fuck you the week goes to John Clayton of John John Clayton fuck Jake: You know what since I don't have a fuck either. We can double fuck you double fuck double stuff John Clayton. There you go. Um, alright well we got some new unis. So Nike is now, uh, a new uni maker. Justin: Yawn. Really? Don't care? Yawn. I don't care. What do I care? Nike symbol on my log- on my thing as opposed to a Reebok? I don't care. Hey they look nice. You know what I care about? There's a Jets logo. Jake: Alright. Doesn't matter. I really don't care. Nike has these really really small... Chinese hands I can make uniforms. Yeah. All right, it doesn't run the box count it up. Yep It probably make you all righty another piece of little Jets news for the week is that there is talk Rumor and I have a rant on this so get ready There is a rumor that the Jets could be on hard not can I go first? Justin: No, I'm not gonna rant you're gonna rant. I'm just gonna give a quick Jake: succinct, it's real hard knocks. They were on two years ago- Justin: I love it because I love the Jets on hard knocks. I can't get enough of it. I love it. I love that show and I love it even more because it was the Jets on hard knocks. So if they can do it, I don't care. Just do it. I like Nike. Just do it. I would say Jake: I absolutely 100% with every piece of my core agree. It was like crack during that preseason watching the hard, it was like crack. It was like I just couldn't get enough. I'd watch them again and again. It's just you just couldn't get enough of watching it. And the music and the whole thing, Justin: the production value, but here's my rant. Every week I'd watch the previous one before the next one. And then the next week I'd watch. the previous two and then it was like before I watched five hours of them. Jake: I still have them on my TiVo. I watched them the other day. Justin: Greatest thing ever. Greatest thing ever. What is that? Speaking of greatest thing ever. What is that? You go. Jake: Alright. Uh... My podcasting studio just turned into a uh... bell. So here's the thing that I need about this and about Hard Knocks.
02 Jake: Maybe he's going to come back. Anyway, is... I feel like, and I've had this feeling kind of creeping up on me all season, or all this starting with the T-bonus, and starting with me saying that I didn't want to have a big target on our back going into the season, but I'm coning your frame, coning your phrase about the Jets, and it's the same feeling I had actually matched it up with my feeling about when F.A.R.V.E. came on, which was... This year is gonna be a circus year. We're it's the big top and It's gonna be a fucking circus and you know what just give me a ticket Give me a ticket to the circus that year the fart came on it was Crazy everything that happened. It was like far this far that you know Every game was like had the high intensity of the Jets, you know being in the spotlight and ultimately didn't work out. But as a Jet fan, it was just, it was nice to just take it all in. It's like, you're in the spotlight. Everybody's talking about you every fucking week. And I feel like this year with Tim Tebow, we have signed our fates up. We are saying we are going to be a circus team this year. We're gonna get all the attention for all the wrong reasons. None of the right reasons, not being a Super Bowl champion or not, you know, being in the AFC Championship last year, we're gonna get for all the wrong reasons to start, which is, you know, Rex Ryan and Talking and Tim Tebow and Hard Knocks. We're getting all this fucking attention. But as a jet fan, fine. Fine, because I like my jets and I will watch them. At the end of the season, we can evaluate whether it's worth it. But for now, give me a fucking ticket to the big show. Can't wait. Get my popcorn, get my candy, candy, whatever. Candy corn, what is it called? Cotton candy, because I'm just ready for the big show. It's gonna be crazy. I know all you Jeff fans, there's no one else but Jeff fans listening to the podcast. Just get ready. and just prepare yourself for a crazy fucking season of highs and lows. There were gonna be games that far of a year when he played against Arizona. I was in that stadium and he'd do this at five, six touchdowns. It was amazing. You like this great feeling. It's like, here's this quarterback like just winging the ball and scoring, like setting records and like we're watching that live. This is gonna be this year. It's gonna be fucking insane. So that's my rant. Um, I, you know, again, so now I'm like, if we were going all in, then I want hard. I think they should rearrange the schedule and they're not gonna do it. We'll talk about that next. But I think they should rearrange the schedule so the Jets are on every night game. They are literally the night game, either a Sunday or Monday or Thursday, the entire season. Justin: I don't think everyone's that interested in the jet. Jake: Why not? Justin: It's Tim Tebow! You're that interested in the jet. Well I'm saying, let's just do it. If we're gonna do it, do it. Jake: Speaking of the schedule, so it looks like it was leaked. Um, it usually gets leaked a week before, so I think it's coming out next week. Um, that's my sources say that it's coming out next week. So there's a leaked version of it. I don't know if this is true or not true, but uh Let's talk about it cuz why the fuck okay?
00 Jake: What do you see in here that you love what do you see that you do you absolutely hate looks like we have four night games? Justin: That makes sense so like if you're looking at this like does this make sense yeah makes sense There's a few things that are a little weird about it like We played the dolphins Pat's and Bill's week one two and three that makes sense that last year But we played the Dolphins week one and the dolphins week six meaning we're done with the Dolphins Jake: By the middle of October. I think last year we played the Dolphins Do you know what that means to me that means I don't think they think the Dolphins gonna be very good so Justin: They're not leaving them to the end. So here's a few things. I don't like okay. I don't like week 8 and week 9, back to back weeks. On the road, we're in Seattle week 8, which I don't like at all. That's brutal. And then the next week we're in Pittsburgh at night. But that's not too bad. 8-20. Because you kill Sunday nights. But you're coming back to New York, you get a week in New York and then you go to England. No, I just don't like those two games back to back on the road. They're rough. Like those are two tough places to win. Right. And that's around the time of the year where if you lose two in a row, things start percolating. So, and those are two games I could see losing in a row. Right. So. So. So I don't like that. I also don't like week 16 and week 17. Our last two weeks of the season, when odds are you gotta win and you're pushing for the playoffs, we're playing the Texans and the Pats. But both at home. They're both at home, but those are two tough teams. Jake: Our last two games are at home, and the two week games before that are Jaguars and Bills. So I kinda like that. I like that we end at home. Again, this could be total bullshit. I do not like a week 5 buy. I hate a week 5 buy. I'd rather have a buy much later. I always feel like a week 5 buy is just a waste. But I certainly see some road trip games in there I'm looking forward to. Looking forward to heading down to Florida on 10-12. Maybe going to Seahawks in 10-28. And maybe the... Maybe that... Justin: It's just 10-12 you speak of. Sorry, 10-14 at the offense. Ah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm thinking Jacksonville. It's a Thursday night game in December. That can be kind of fun. Oh yeah! We can do that. That can be fun. Let's do it. That's a good one. Can we drive to Jacksonville? No. No? No. Jacksonville, I don't even want to drive to Buffalo. Oh. That's true. That's a long drive. Alright, so anyway... Wait... Four... Buffalo's a long drive but Jacksonville's not. No. Jake: Let's try that. We go south, it gets warm, it's nice. Umm... Four night games, I can believe that. I can believe starting with the dolphins and ending with the Patriots. Justin: Oh, I can also see that one of those last two weeks, the Texans or the Pats getting flexed somehow. Jake: Oh yeah.
00 Jake: There's some flexing going on. Even that 49ers jets could be a big game if they're two good teams at that point. Any other things? So there's a Thursday night in there. There's a one Thursday night game. That's also an NFL game. There's a Thursday, there's a Monday, there's a few Sundays. Yeah, but how many home night games? Justin: Home at night. One. One home night game. The Colts. ... ... ... We'll see Andrew Luck in person on Monday night. Jake: Monday night! Anyway, I like the good- I like my games. Um, so cool!
