09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Jake: Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast, long as we're on the New York Jets Podcast in the entire universe. I'm Jake, back for my live coverage of the 2012 NFL Draft from Radio City. And I'm Jordan with Justin on this very special episode. Um, where we're just gonna quickly talk about what happened in one, maybe a little bit on two, and get into it since it's sort of a, um, a middle, uh, middle podcast. How you doing, buddy? Justin: I'm good. It's kind of funny, um, like the draft is not even close to over. Like it's barely even started, but I feel like it's over. I feel like it's over. Like I feel like it happened. It happened. It did happen. But it's not even close. Like one seventh of it is over. Jake: It's true, and yet they're already grading, they're already whatever. It's so ridiculous. It's very smart of the media and the NFL to make this into a multi-day event because it just makes it into a multi-important day event. Justin: Yeah, people like, people already won the draft and lost the draft and the draft hasn't even really happened yet. I feel like you win the draft in rounds like three through six. Jake: I feel like you win the draft in days 700 and 900 of the draft, meaning three years from now. We always know that, like, you don't...you know, is Sanchez...was Sanchez a great pick? Still don't know. Three years later, we'll know in a couple years, but we don't know yet. Kyle Wilson. I don't know. Vernon Gholston? Yeah, we know. You know, there's some people you can just go back and say, oh, Nick Mangold, was that a good pick? Yes. Ferguson? Yes. Good pick, right? You know? Yes. Reavis in the first round? Yes. So there you go. Yes. We know some of these things and not all of them. Yes. So let's talk about our predictions and how wrong we were. Why can't I find just like? I mean this. Justin: Yeah, why am I on nfl.com and why, I'm not stupid. Well. I opened myself up for that. There it is. Why can't I just find, just show me the damn list. Jake: Alright, alright, forget it. I'm gonna talk while you do nothing. This is stupid. Yeah. So. while you try to look up the information on your computer. What a dumb fucking website. So, by the way, I got... Justin: No, my fuck you goes to the NFL.com webmaster. That is a dumb fuck website. Jake: So, by the way, while you talk about absolutely nothing on the podcast,
00 Jake: I was at the draft last night. Oh, yeah, good for you. It was pretty cool. It was very, very cool. I got invited to a friend and set up in a cool section the VIP section freebie that is cool That is pretty cool. I have a little analogy then we'll get into the actual thing So I've been to a draft not the NFL. I've been to the NBA draft twice So here's here's what I thought was gonna be and what so it's like going to a game Right? And so you want to... Except nobody plays. No. When you go to a game, you go and you watch the game, but you're like all in on the game. So you don't need the commentary because you're all in. And you know all the players, and you know the stuff, and you're studying the team because you're a freaking fanatic fan, and you just enjoy it. Right? Right. Right. Here's the difference when you go to a draft. You don't know anything! I don't know who these players are! And so you're in this weird thing where you really need the commentaries to tell you even who these guys are. That, combined with... You're in this time warp. Because it's like watching a game that you know the play that's going to happen two plays from now. You're just watching the play as it happens. But then you're also seeing replays at the same time of the play that happened three plays ago. So you're not getting this constant thing. Justin: At the events, are the commentary, is it coming out the... Jake: There's two of them. You can't have both of them going the same time. You'd think the NFL would just take theirs. Because ESPN pays a lot of money as well. Justin: So you don't get any of that over the... Even do they do interviews? I don't watch it. Do they do interviews? With the players after they get drafted, can you hear that? A little bit. A little bit. Jake: So anyway, let's talk about our predict. So it was fun. I had a great time. I stayed until the Jets pick and I was like, I'm done. So we both predicted. We both predicted triply wrong. Moves, offense, none of that happened. Yeah, we didn't go offense and we didn't move. Justin: They basically picked what the safe pick, which is what we should have said they were going to do. They're going to pick. But he never does that. they're gonna pick an outside rusher and it's kind of funny we kind of picked the first Jake: rusher the first um you know like defensive end yeah well as he's coming down we had we had the choice of the litter so here's the thing whenever defensive end happens out of this draft we will be praised well or the goat because we had to pick up any one of them. So it's not like, oh, our guy got picked before us. We gotta pick up any which one we wanted. And let's talk before our pick. Let's talk about the pre-pick. So, Cold Sweat through Andrew Luck. That was obvious. Huge amount of Redskins fans there for our G3. He actually said, what are you gonna do after the draft? He's like, this is like before the draft draft. He says, yeah, I'm gonna fly to DC. I was like, okay. So I guess you're going.
00 Jake: Thank you everyone. uh... trend returns to lose a big trading night i don't even know all the trade i'm not even pretend to know all the trades but i know that the uh... the browns traded up and picked uh... we thought the jet country on pic which was trunches and from their kind of went normal in that kalil justin blackman the guy who i thought was gonna gotta go to us you know he got picked up by the jaguars and the cowboys moved way up They did they made a move. Well, it was the second move because the other guys dropped down twice Morris Claiborne the corner That seems high to go through get a corner six picked to pick a corner I think there's always a corner that goes like very high. I don't think so I feel like that's a true statement Alright, so then Buccaneers picked Mark Baron the safety was the big deal and we get down to the the biggity the biggity dolphins who pick Uh, Ryan Tannehill. You know, last year there was a corner pick number five. Oh, was there? Yeah. The guy who ran back all those... ...punt returns for touchdowns. Oh. Yeah. There you go. What do you think about the Dolphins pick? We knew it was gonna happen. We knew that was gonna happen. Justin: I'm happy about it. Good. Good. Jake: Can't wait to beat the shit out of him. Then Panthers picked Luke... ...Koochie? Kookly. Kookly? Yeah, supposed to be excellent. Bill's picked a corner, so a second corner. That guy's supposed to be excellent as well. Yeah, he's a big boy. Six foot. Chiefs went and got Don Terry Poe. Now I heard there was a little bit that Rex Ryan really liked this guy. He's a big, domineering guy. He went away. Justin: This is the dude that. Jake: Supposedly is the next Hellata, right? Justin: No, he's supposedly not that good. He's like a Vernon Gholston type from what I was hearing. He was able to bench hundreds of thousands of pounds. Hundreds of thousands? Thousand pounds. He was just a workout guy. Jake: But he played at Memphis and didn't really do anything in a shit conference. I mean 6-4, 3-46. Big boy. Big boy! That's a mountain. Eagles traded up and then picked up a defensive lineman, Fletcher Cox. Cardinals, I think that they trade up too? It looks like they... Think they might have been a part of a trade they picked up Michael Foyts there what the two best wide receivers gone And then what's really being considered the three worst picks of the first round Or I was reading this morning. I think Mel Kiper said these are the three worst picks of the first round really Yep Rams pick Brockers uh... c-hawks picked bruce irving and nowhere i guess he has real off the field issues and then uh... the jets picked quinton couples couples couples great i don't know whatever we'll learn who is a big mother six six two eighty four north carolina got eighty eight on the grades
04 Jake: uh... and everybody was hoping for, no there you are, we had the TV in the back which is really kind of disturbing. Everybody was hoping for Melvin Ingram, that's who everybody predicted. They're about to talk about Quentin Copples. Yeah. Copples. Copples. They're about to talk about this. Well, no you can't do that. I have Tebow. Oh, you have Tebow, yeah, there you go. All right, very good. You can't play ESPN on our podcast. No, I'm Tebow. Hey guys, today on the podcast. Justin: But we can talk about ESPN. That's true. T-VO. Sponsor of nothing. So what do you think? I don't know what to think. I think we picked the right position. Whether we picked the right guy or not will play out over the next bunch of years. But everyone on Twitter was... Jake: Didn't you say at the beginning of this that you thought they were going to trade up and pick around dead? Then you said that what they really should do is go get a guard. Yeah, they probably should have picked that Dicastro dude. And now, you're saying that they did the right thing? Justin: You know what sucks? They could have picked that David Dicastro and that probably would have been a good move and he slipped all the way to Pittsburgh, which is not where you want. A really great guard. Because it's like, oh, guard's so unsexy. Right. Guard's like... But when Pittsburgh gets it, it's like fuck man, they're gonna be able to run and protect wildest burger and run and that's what they want to do and they got younger on the line. Jake: So a few things, the Jets actually use all their time. Justin: Yeah, we were definitely trying to trade back. Jake: They were trying to trade back and I think that if they could have trade back, they would have. they would have maybe traded back and picked up something like that at that high position they're like we gotta pick a guy that would like Justin: well the two offensive linemen were sitting there they were sitting there uh... Reif and Dacastro were both just chilling at sixteen we could have picked either of them and it didn't happen it was interesting that the Pats Made their move the Pats actually moved up and and grabbed one of the guys who the Jets were thinking So that'll be kind of the thing, right? right the Jets picked Quentin Coppola's Coppola's and the Pats moved up to take Chandler Jones five picks later Who's another end? So which one of these guys in the course of their careers gonna? be better off. They're both playing under defensive-minded coaches in their rookie seasons and will have all the opportunity in the world, I'm sure. It'll be interesting to see how the evolution, because I'm sure those two will be compared to each other in the same division for the next bunch of years. Hopefully for the next bunch of years. Jake: You know, and I think that's the big news out of the draft, I thought. Again, the first round, then we're going to talk about the second round, which is going to start in like a couple of hours. The big news was it was just with the rookie salary cap on trades galore, everybody trading. That, and also the coverage was strange because they wouldn't show you what was going to happen in advance, but Paul Allen was on Twitter basically posting everything before it happened. Who's Paul Allen? He's the owner of the Seahawks.
01 Justin: Oh. Oh. Jake: Oh right, yeah, yeah. That Paul Allen. That Microsoft Paul Allen? He had, he was two picks ahead of everybody saying... Sure, but I think they told him to stop. Yeah. Because he stopped. I think he, I think he actually, we were, I was talking with a friend today about it and he was saying, I bet that in the war rooms when someone actually puts in their pick, like it goes off the computer. So I think he was... tweeting off of what he saw on the computer which he gets as an owner. And as a geek he probably had this all figured out and just automated. He maybe automated it. Justin: But wait, that's why I didn't watch the draft because I know like you were there and I was ahead of you with Twitter. like I had Twitter. I had Twitter too. Well, but that's why it's so stupid of them, them being the TV networks to think that they are saving some sort of surprise by not showing you or telling you when they actually know because their own employees, Mortensen, Schefter are sitting there tweeting what they know is about to happen. So it's sort of a waste of resources and a waste of time to put the mandate on the networks like the NFL Network trying to protect themselves and to tell ESPN hey ESPN don't don't cut to the green room where the guys on the cell phone or whatever it's silly because the people at home who want to know ahead of time they're gonna know ahead of time and even the ones that don't I mean who's not in this day and age and we've talked about this with watching games on TV. They're a lot of fun to watch and and participate on social media at the same time. It enhances the game, like it enhances the draft to sit there and be on twitter with the jet fans and talking about what might happen and experience that together. Um, so you're gonna see it anyway. I wasn't watching on TV, but I was following the draft on Twitter and I felt like I was following it just as good as if I was watching it on TV. Jake: Right, I mean I do think the TV, now that I've gone to one, I'm actually excited to go watch it on TV tonight, so I can watch, I can just watch the, like, the commentary. Justin: Did you see about it so you could watch the first round? No, no. Jake: Because you are that guy. What? Justin: That would T-vogue the draft and watch it. Jake: No, I would've seen... There's so much... I've seen every piece of commentary over it by 17 times. You haven't seen this one that we're about to see. I will. That's T-vogue. I might. So, yeah, so the big, real news it seemed like was the Patriots. The Patriots did this all in. If they always trade down and know what they did, they traded out. Not once, but twice. Justin: They got blue chippers for their defense. Jake: Which, not good if you're a Jets fan. Justin: Not good, that was their weak spot. And they went out and drafted a middle linebacker and a defensive end. And I guarantee you they're going to be in this starting spot. Come week one. Jake: They got rid of Anderson, their sack leader I think. Justin: I don't think Sean Ellis is going back. And they had another guy, Carter, I think was not back, was hurt. So they... I mean they definitely need to retool their defense and they did.
01 Justin: They went all in. You know, I follow Bill Simmons, the sports guy, and he's a big Boston sports fan and he was just like... Jake: So wait, wait, let me just do my... Fuck you to Bill Simmons for being a Boston sports guy. Justin: No, Simmons is great. But he's like, Tom Brady finally put in the call. to Bill Belichick and said, it's time to go into fuck you mode with all these picks. We have them, let's, come on, I got a couple years left. Let's actually try and not go for the future. Like, let's try now. How about now? Jake: Let's go for this. Let's do it. Yeah. Justin: So not good, not good. Jake: No, no, not not. I mean, again, you know, what happened again, what happened on draft day on Thursday night and what happens on the field in, you know, many, many months from now. Justin: I don't understand the second round. Can you help me understand how the second round why Jake: the Rams pick first and not sure. See, there's the first round and the first round you get Justin: something called the wider Rams have the first pick in the second round. and the Colts have the second pick as opposed to the other way around. And I think the Rams have the first pick in the third and the fourth round. Jake: No, it's only the fourth round. It's got to be a trade. The fourth round. The Rams and Colts flip. They've got to trade something. But why do they flip? They flip. I don't know. It's a weird thing. It is a weird thing. So, you know, again, it's really tough with the draft as someone who doesn't watch college football because I'm too involved in the Jets. to really know like what's good or not good. All I can say is from everything I've read, this guy, Copples, is a monster, but has some of the warning signs on him that he doesn't finish plays and that he sort of, his senior year was not very good. But when anybody says he could be a Julius Peppers, yeah, I'll take it. I mean, you know. I love the julie's peppers. And Wilson last year, and I mean, that line should be good, right? Justin: Well, yeah, Puah was there. He's going to be there for a while. Right. Where at least a few more years. You got Wilkerson, who's coming up, who had a solid rookie season. I expect him to get a little better as he gets more acclimated. It's a weird spot in that end. If you're not like an outside linebacker in the Rex Ryan defense and you're an end, your defensive end, your job's kinda to just stuff it up. Don't, you're not really getting to the quarterback much. All the more. Jake: All the medicine did, but he had a sack last year. Well, a sack is not a defensive end. Justin: Like, you know, that's not Jason Pierpaul, 12-15. or Jared Allen 20 sacks right that's like a sack okay your job is more to take up space and those outside linebackers so i'm hoping that this guy can transition into what we want Calvin Pace to be like the guy who can get to the quarterback but also play on first down right like not not Eramaven, who's third down already. Jake: Right, stop the run and then have a motor to get to the QB.
02 Jake: So now, alright, so your feelings, just give me a 1-10, 10 being the greatest thing, 10 being when they picked Revas, no, because no one knows. Justin: No one knows. I mean when they picked Revas, I was sitting there with a buddy of mine who, we all said they're going to draft a corner. We actually all said, they said they were going to draft a corner. and My buddy said oh, that's the wrong guy when they pick Rebus. Oh really? So they should have picked Aaron Ross who's actually the guy the Giants picked right and has won a couple Super Bowls But not right not to relrives. So you never know I mean, he's like, oh I watched Ross these for Michigan. I saw him play so many times. He's amazing Meanwhile, right now it is not the best in the league Even says right and then you know, how does David Harris go in the second round? If you if you were to know David Harris is gonna be what Davis Harris is don't you draft him in the first round? Jake: Yeah, so he's not sure he's a stand-up player for the Jets Justin: I don't know if he's a stand-up player on another team. He is he's just very solid middle linebacker I just feel like I got rid of Jonathan Vilma because they drafted David Harris and they said, okay Jake: We got somebody here, right? I guess. So, now we got the rounds tonight. I actually don't know which rounds are tonight. Is it round two and three? Two and three are tonight. All right. So, we got two more picks as I see it. Actually, let me go look. Draft tracker. We have the 15th, 47th overall. And then the 77th we have. Okay, so we have two more. So two more tonight. We have 15 and then 14. What do you think we're in for? Give me another prediction. Make another wrong prediction. Justin: I'm just gonna be wrong. It doesn't matter. It'll be awesome. Um, I I feel like they'll probably grab a wide receiver with one of these two picks. Um, that's my guess. And then, you know, I could see them. I could see them. Jake: Maybe safety. Yeah, safety wide receiver tonight safety wide receiver. What do you think? Yeah, I? Yeah, I mean I'd kind of like them to go wide receiver Offensive lineman like I'm looking at their knees apparently on there on the on the app here wide receiver offensive I don't know why they have corner. Why is corner need we've got two star corners and we've got a young guy We got last year. Do you need another one? Justin: I don't understand why corners listed. Jake: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. On that app. Justin: Is that a need? What is that app doing to figure out that we need a corner? It says we need a corner. What is it doing, like counting the number of corners that we actually have on our roster? Jake: Yeah, it's someone's analysis of what we need. Someone got that wrong. All right, anyway. So I'm kind of hoping for, you know, I'm hoping for... a wide receiver and I'm hoping for an offensive line. I don't care if it goes two, three, or three. If it's got to be two, it better be a really like a stud. I don't know how many studs wide receivers are left.
04 Jake: But that's what I'm hoping for. Again, I think all the big names are off the board. Kind of low in the middle of the round, they're going to go off the board in the beginning. So here's the thing, make a prediction. We trade again. Do we trade at any point during the second and third round? I'm going to say no. I'm going to say yes. David Harris, we traded right back up to the top of the either third or second. And we did it with Keller. We traded back into the first round. Justin: But I feel like there will be trades because we have so many draft picks that they're going to make a trade. Right. All right. Jake: I don't know. Plus now is the point where if you want to go from like the whatever, you know, if you want to go from the 16th of the second round to like the fourth of the second round you can literally just throw in like a seventh round Justin: Well, yeah, you know value and you don't you've had all day to work the trade Right. So like you've had like it's not like yesterday where the draft starts and then action happens where obviously there's time leading up to it but nothing was announced nothing happened It's really when the trade when the draft starts is when there's all the action Well, the draft is it's it's going right now. It's right. Someone's on the clock. The Rams are on the clock. So There are trades happening right now and I feel like that's kind of so yeah, I guess maybe a trade so see as the east Jake: Patriots looks like they did a great job looks like they did good bills got stronger on D That D is coming along. Yeah, I mean there you know a Jets Bills game might be 13 week one. Let's do it. Yep and Dolphins, you know like dolphins are gambling. I don't know who I think that was a stretch I don't think who he's gonna throw to that was a stretch They better go get wide receiver wide receiver wide receiver. That was a stretch. That was a pressure pick Justin: Yeah, that was a peer pressure fan pressure. I think that's going to turn out to be the wrong... Someone's going to get fired after this year. I've saved my butt for one more year and I'm gambling real bad. I don't feel like that... Is he going to be any better than Matt Moore this coming season? And is he gonna do enough to show you, like, okay, this was the right decision for the future. I don't even see him starting. So, I don't know. Jake: I mean, he's a big boy. This is not a small guy. Justin: I just don't see him being that good. That's all. Jake: I, you know, Mayoc hates him. Justin: We're not hating him, but just doesn't think he's that bad. Jake: Quote-unquote experts who just don't see it. So four quarterbacks taken the other one that was funny was the dude's old Justin: Yeah, he's like 28. Where is he? Oh, he's 29. He was a Yankees. He was drafted by the Yankees Jake: I mean, he looks like me. No, it doesn't mean all but 83 grade picked by the Browns the Browns with Colt McCoy who they picked
01 Jake: He was a third round here around two or three years ago I thought I kind of thought I keep the browns last year like three Justin: Quarterbacks in the last six years they picked Brady Quinn right they picked Colt McCoy now. They picked this guy I Jake: Don't know the only thing to help out this guy is like why didn't they go get a wide receiver since they just Well, they also they picked Richard. Yeah, that's gonna help him more than anything, but they have a quarterback I feel like they have a quarterback. I don't know. They feel differently. And then they lost their number one receiver this year. They lost Simpson. He signed somewhere else. They never had a number one receiver. They don't have a guy. OK. Justin: I didn't even have a guy to lose. That's how bad their receivers are. Yeah. Jake: So I just feel like if you're going to get the running back, I get it. You got stud. But go get some web receivers. Justin: They see something in, I mean, here's the thing about this guy. He's 29. He's got to start. Jake: Like, he has to start. Justin: Like, here's the thing guys, he's a rookie and he's five years older than Mark Sanchez. So you can grade these two against each other and say, okay. But I'd rather have the 24 year old who started 3 years in the league, made the playoffs twice, or this 29 year old who's a rookie. Never played it down in the NFL. Yeah. Never played it down. Never. And you have no idea. He's 29. Have fun. You have to start him, don't you? If he's 29, what are you going to do? Develop him for two years? Then he's got to retire. Jake: What do you do with the 29 year old rookie? Yeah, he better be that good. And again, I feel like the other thing is like really, Brandon... Like, are people gunning for this guy? Justin: I don't know, they apparently had to trade out to get him. Jake: So my dolphin's buddy said this is the guy that he wanted on the dolphins. Oh really? Yeah, and I was like, why? He's a jerk. Well... But he had one. It wasn't Henny, it was the... Winky? No, it was the one before that. The one who went to Redskins eventually. They had a guy who was a Mormon who went two years out, he was 26 when he came to the dolphins. They picked him up in the second round. Oh, his name. time. Whatever. Oh, I know who you're talking about. Beck. Yeah, John Beck. Yeah, John Beck? They did this before. John Beck who never won an NFL start in his life. So John Beck and Chad Henny, they picked up in the last two years. Those are four years. You're talking about the Dolphins. Dolphins, right. So I'm saying they got Henny in the second round. They got Beck in the second round two years ago. Now they got a first round guy. Yeah, I mean it does seem like Second round quarterbacks. Well, it does seem like second round quarterbacks don't end up doing that well. I mean look at our second round. Colin Clemens. Yeah, I mean, I don't know if it's a situational thing or... Well, Drew Brees was a second round pick. That's true. But he didn't do well until he got to the Saints. And that's why he had a really good year with the... Justin: Chargers they but he had a really good year in the year after they drafted Phil Rivers and Phil Rivers sat behind him and that must have motivated him right crazy dad actually do something and then he busted his shoulder and No, I am he wouldn't clear him. I know this whole Miami quarterback Jake: Not that is just a mess since Marino. They've cursed themselves with Marino
03 Jake: That is a mess. They have not. Justin: I mean, they didn't even win anything with Marino. So it's not even like that turned out. They got to a Super Bowl, kid. That's great. They got there. Hey, if we get to a Super Bowl, I will cry. Jake: You will literally see me crying. All right. Well, speaking of crying, let's end up this podcast so we can get it out there because the draft is about to start in a couple hours. People want it. People want it. Go to all the places we always tell you to go. Enjoy. Next time we'll get the mic back. Oh yeah. Apologize to the fans for not bringing the mic. Justin: the snowball. Oh, that's my fault. Sorry guys, this doesn't sound good. It's just like dog shit. That's Jake: that's the podcasting studio is broken because Justin didn't bring the podcasting stuff. So anyway, I'll put this up soon so you can get listening to it before the next one. We'll do a wrap up next week. Come back and we'll talk about the whole draft and maybe give us some grades. Yeah, I think I love that I'm a great our draft gates grades podcast is always the number one most popular podcast is yeah, it's funny So we'll see you next week and until then and as always go check
