09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way. Can't wait! Jake: Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast. Mom is running New York just podcast in the universe. My name is Jake and joining me today from our podcasting studio here in the heart of Times Square, New York. Uh-oh, I think I just gave away our secret location. It's Justin. Justin, how you doing? Justin: I'm good, thank you. Jake: Yeah? Yeah, how are you? I'm good. This is our 150th episode. Oh shit. That's a lot. That's a lot of episodes. 150 episodes. That's a lot of episodes. And you know what? It is our traditionally most popular episode of the year because we talk about the draft and the draft grades. That's crazy. So yes. People love the draft. People do love the draft. I think they love... to hear us talk about the draft. It's too bad because we're not really that brilliant Justin: when it comes to the draft. No. Maybe we're just really not that brilliant. I don't think anyone's that brilliant when it comes to the draft. I think the draft's one of those things that like, it's like the weather. It's like, like, you need the weatherman. Yes. Because you need him. But he doesn't have to be right. He just has to- You need Mel Kiper, but fuck if he's wrong all the time. And whoever calls him out. Like, how long has he been doing it? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, he's been doing it for 29 years. I know, but whoever calls him out, like who goes and looks back and says, like, okay, you said, because he- Nobody ever, because he wouldn't have a job. Alright, because he's got to be right like 12% of the time, basically. Oh, I don't know, I don't think, I'm just trying to think, does he make like bold, bold predictions like This guy will be a long-term- They don't know shit! I was watching the first round of bits and pieces. Great pick! Every pick. Great pick! No, the worst is Gruden. Gruden like almost every pick except for I think the Seattle pick. This guy's great! Great, great guy. Everyone's great. Great. So, okay. They're all great. Jake: They're great. Just pick them out of a hat. They're all great. So we have a lot to talk about today. We have the entire draft. We're going to do a grading of the draft. Shipballs. We also have some bad news, some shipballs news. And we have some jet snooze. Yeah, we do. Town choir. So let's start off with sort of Around the Horn and the NFL. Two big things came out this week, one a little sad and one a little interesting, I think we can discuss. Yes. First is Junior Seau. How do I start there? Get out of the way. Yeah, he was found dead two days ago yesterday? Two days ago. Two days ago. In his apartment. Apparently shot through the chest. But they think it's suicide. Yeah. Really sad like why you know what he seemed that he was like I don't get it like no one they're saying all his friends
02 Justin: It's like no one knew no one thought anything is it confirmed that it's suicide because they usually don't reported that it was suicide But they usually don't say that unless they're pretty damn sure they should yeah like shot himself in the chest First of all you yeah, we were talking about this last night. Well, there's in the chest isn't really there's a thing about So there have been some Analysts that have watched on TV who any of them who should they fuck you to no no Come on, we're talking this is somber, okay? Um former bears Safety Dave Dureson mm-hmm committed suicide Last year within the last year or so and wrote a letter and you know basically shot himself or killed himself in the chest oh really saying he wants his brain he wanted his brain studied for science right because of concussions this is like concussions and then things of that nature and there's been some theories that maybe say I was starting to maybe feel like the rest of his life wasn't gonna be too great, right? Because of head trauma or just playing in the NFL and this is a big deal Like this is not a I mean, it's very sad that a person has taken his own life kind of by all accounts, he was a good guy. And we don't know him, but, you know, losing someone who you watch on TV and losing celebrities and things sort of touches you in weird ways sometimes because you feel like in some way, shape, or form you know them. It'll be interesting to see if, hopefully this is not a trend. that like former NFL players feel like the rest of their lives are gonna be terrible because they played and they're gonna have dementia when they're 50 or whatever and they just decide to take their own lives. That's not, this is... Jake: Yeah, it's hard to say it's a trend since there's so many players that come and go. I mean, we started to see like a series of these, but one... And again, it's people. People have weird things happen. There's mental and chemical imbalances in people, whether you play the NFL or not. Maybe he just always had an imbalance. Or maybe keeping him in the NFL, that was the thing that kept him sort of sane. And maybe being out has been very difficult, not for a reason. But anyway, you know, let's... I didn't know him as a player. I just remember when he went to the Dolphins and because he played for the Dolphins like two years right then he retired and then he went and played for the Jets for two years? No, not Jets. Sorry Patriots, Patriots for two years. Yeah. Yeah, so I mean I just remember that I remember when he went to the Dolphins and then retired and like he retired then went to the Dolphins and retired and then went to Patriots. Justin: I think you retired twice in his tenure with the Pats. Yeah, so played for them retired played for them
01 Jake: Yeah, he was a dominating player. But anyway, it's sort of sad That's what a semi. I don't know if this is sad news, but it's big news in the NFL Which is that the NFL finally came out and made a Basically came down the sanctions against the players in the Saints gate Saints, whatever bounty gate whatever whatever the name of it is and four players were named and I think this is the end. Like my gut is that they've said this is it. There's no more waiting away. Should be, should be, yeah. This is sort of the end. So they started off by sanctioning the team. Then they went ahead and did the GM, the head coach and... the defensive coordinator at the time. And now they've gone on to the players. And interesting news for us chess fans, because one of them is an ex-jet, in fact, a draft pick ex-jet, John and Vilma. He got the brunt of it. He got the brunt of it, because his participation in it was sort of the brunt of the participation. Apparently, he was not only participating in this bounty program, he was funding it. he was basically saying, and in games, they have, you know, evidence, I guess, of saying, I'll give you $10,000, you take out that guy, take him out of the game. So, as clear evidence as you possibly could, I guess, and he's out for a year. Justin: So it's him, it's Will Smith, who's also a saint. Both are saints, yeah. There's Anthony Hargrove, who just signed as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers, and there's Scott Fujita, who's a Cleveland Brown. Right. All right. So you want to recap our conversation last night? I guess we shouldn't have even talked about it last night, but I felt as though it's The suspensions are what they are. I don't whatever they really how's the better not sure fine I don't have that something. Yeah, they're fine No, that's still not an answer. Do you think they're justified or not yes or no? Jake: Yes, they did something illegal according to the rules. They should get punished for it. They got punished. Do you think that they, and I'll do the next question. Do you think the punishments, not what's the next piece that you're gonna go, but just for themselves, regardless of where they are now, do you think the punishment seemed fair? Meaning suspended for up to a year? Justin: I don't know all the... things but yeah I mean I take that a football for yeah no they're not they're not like they're not Greg Williams they're not banished forever and it seemed like they did it on a scale like guys who were way out of line got a year of film a guy who were whatever they were deemed to be doing got three games so I don't know what that is but fine yeah okay sure where my issue was with this was within that was with the timing right like it's hard for me to believe that they knew two days ago that they were gonna suspend these four particular players for however long they suspended them and did not know Jake: a week and a half ago. Your point yesterday I'll recap quickly because you know sometimes it's just easy that way. It was that it's unfair because for the teams who then went and picked these players up, not
01 Jake: so much the Saints, so basically these two other teams, Green Bay and the Browns, that they should have been told before the draft because then they would have had the chance to do something about that in the draft. If a player is out for six weeks... Or six games. Justin: Well, the Packers just signed Anthony Hargrove to a free agent deal this year. Right. And he's gonna miss eight games. So he's gonna miss half the season. Right. Jake: A guy they just signed. And we all know that on game nine, doesn't mean you come back and you're a dominating player. You usually got a couple games to get back in. So you basically get them back for sort of the end of December run. Justin: Right and and he doesn't hurt himself or whatever right I mean it it To me it seems unfair to the teams like Green Bay and the Browns who really did nothing wrong They signed these guys There's only four that were picked out. There's 11 starting defensive players and 20 some odd maybe 30 Defensive players on the scene so you couldn't say well I don't know which of the four they're gonna pick. There's 20 of them and 15 of them are still active in the league or whatever. You can't just say, well, you should have known better and not signed a Saints defensive player as a free agent. Well, you don't know which ones are gonna get it. So it's sort of unfair to the Packers. It's unfair to the Browns. in so much as they didn't do anything wrong, but they're really being penalized, even though it's a penalty to the player, not to the team, it hurts the team indirectly. Interesting. Jake: You did not bring this up for the Rams. Where did Greg Williams go? Rams? No, he went to... He went to the Rams. Yeah, so, but interesting, when this happened with the coach, just making a note, you didn't say it's unfair to the Rams that Greg Williams... doesn't get to play for it, doesn't get to, or might ever, right? You didn't say that. So it's interesting that you see it from a player perspective, but from the coaching, you're like, well, whatever, not a big deal. I, two things. One, we don't actually know what went on, right? We don't know. I mean, I have insight sources into the NFL, but they're very light. They don't go this deep. So I don't actually know if they didn't give out a list at the time before. weeks ago, months ago, and say, these are the people we're investigating. I've always heard Jonathan Vilma was one of the people being investigated for weeks. Justin: Well, that's why the Saints, I mean, the Saints went out and signed him into the linebacker. Like, they knew Jonathan Vilma was gonna be gone. Yeah, he's not gonna be around. Jake: I get it. I think it's just, it's unfair to the teams a little bit, but it's also like, it's not meant to be fair to anybody. It's sort of a... because it's supposed to be unfair to the players and it is unfair to the players because it's a punishment. That's what punishments do. Sometimes punishments hurt other people. If you kill somebody and get put in jail, that hurts this podcast. I have to go do the podcast by myself. So is it unfair to me that you went to jail? Actually, that'd be unfair for the listeners because then the podcast. Yes. would suck balls. I could replace you with a drunken retarded monkey. Well that, that is what I am. I agree.
00 Jake: That's perfectly acceptable. I agree. Justin: But you see how it's like not like come on. But punishments are always unfair to somebody. But punishments are unfair to people who really did not. Have any wrongdoing like they really write that like I mean I don't even know enough like is Green Bay gonna get the money back off the cap like Like they like they really should have just done this a week and a half ago so that the teams could have But it's still been unfair. They just would have been I would have been a little less unfair Just a little less unfair because then the draft they could have done something. Okay, they could also done it September 1st Now they're more unfair. Because then training camps would have already happened. And you got your starting lives, and games are about to start. So it's not like they don't have time to come around. It's akin to losing somebody in a pre-season injury, but Terrell sucks. But those things happen. Those things happen by chance. This happened. It didn't have to happen. Okay. Well, injuries are gonna happen. They happen. Jake: Alright. Justin: I know, I kinda get ya. I don't... Jake: It's just a little unfair. Justin: But I don't... Yeah, I think it's unfair, but it's sort of quite... It is... Jake: It... Justin: If the Jets were to have signed Anthony Hargrove... Yep. And he was like... I don't even know what position he plays. Right. Well, let's just say he... I really have no idea who this guy is. I feel like he's a linebacker. We'll be right back. Okay. Just say he's a linebacker. Sounds like a linebacker. He's our outside linebacker who's gonna put pressure on the quarterback, cause that's what he does. Yes. Jets sign him cause that's what they need. Yes. They say, right, we signed Anthony Hargrove. We're not gonna now draft like, Coppols, because we've got that position figured out. and And you didn't even tell us about it, so we signed him in. But if he did, bullshit. If he, if he, if he, but that you figured, you, you, you know you don't know. No, you don't know. You can figure that stuff out in background checks and things of that nature. With this, it's like, they should have been told, the teams really should have been told, hey, by the way guys, we're really going after this group of guys before they did it. Jake: And if you want to sign them before they did it. So then it would have been really slamming those players because they never would have got signed. That's it, man. That's a punishment. Hello, punishment? Here's another scenario. Let's say the NFL put out, and then we'll move off this topic. Let's say the NFL put out a list of 20 players they're investigating. Yes. 20 players. Right. And said, these are the 20 players that we're investigating as part of it. And at some point, some of them could be punished. And we don't know what that punishment will be, but it could be something. Right before the draft and before free agency mm-hmm that would be fair to the rest of the teams in the league But none of them but only four of them gets sanctioned and the other 16 they get signed now
05 Jake: No, cuz now it's too late. It's not too late at all. No, they're still on the Saints No, that's unfair to the other 16 then because they don't get punished. They were under investigation That's it weren't they didn't get signed it Justin: That's the breaks, kid! You're participating in this fucking thing and you're gonna get punished and that's it. Alright. You're landfall team grow up. Just saying. Alright, in other Jets news, we got cool pieces of Jets news before we get on to the draft. We release this one because I can say his name. Do it. Ropati patuitua. Patuitu later since he's no longer on the GX. Patuitua not gonna matter. Yeah. Two things, we actually released him. He was like the star of the hard knocks. He got hurt. Well he was like, look at this guy, he's huge. Huge. Like 6'8, 6'9, he's fast, he's good. And then he like chills his ankle or something. And then next year I think he was mostly using backup rolls. Last year he was back up. When DeVito was hurt, he was the guy in the... Still didn't even start. Yeah, I know. Just a rotation defensive lineman. So they're saying... Nothing special. Jake: They're saying that they could pick him up later, but it's sort of not a big thing. And then we signed a kicker. Yeah. Josh Brown. Good. Why does he good? Justin: Because we need a good punter. We need a good punter. We need a professional kicker. to push and and be a real competitor to our kicker, to Nick Volk. But we need a punter. Punters? No, we'll get a blue dom. Same, we'll have a punter in camp too. Jake: There will be another punter there. This to me is like... Whatever. Yeah, I get it. You always get a couple of... You always get kickers and you fucking have them compete against each other Justin: And then you generally give the job. I feel like Nate Fockel just win the job anyway. Because he's a pretty good kicker. He's not that good a kicker. He's not a great kicker, but he's a good kicker. He's not that good. He's not... Yeah, he's above average. I would say he's average. He's above average. I would say he's average. Alright. Well, you would be wrong. I would say you're average. I don't think I am wrong. You're average. I think he's average. He's not good. He's not bad. I think statistically... He is above average. You know what, statistically you can't really measure kickers. Because you can? Not really. It fluctuates so much from year to year. Jake: It's not even statistically over the last three years or two years he's played for the Jets. Justin: I'd say he's below average then. Oh, okay. Jake: You think statistically when he's played for the Jets he's below average? Probably. What are you basing it on? On whatever the numbers that they made. Things over 50 yards. I'd say he's average to below average. I don't feel like he's very good average above average What's a grief for you to be wrong? Whatever you want. All right, let's do some draft talk since We've now had like a week in it. Well week and a half two weeks Justin: It was last weekend last night. God was the last weekend. Seems like it's been forever Only it was only like seven days ago. It was that we did a podcast after
01 Justin: Day one so it's been seven days. We've had time to read everybody I just tell us we saw the things Jake: I've listened to the you know the other news It's time for us the jet Kingdom stars Jake and Justin to do two things So I actually told you in advance. I didn't just slam this on you We're going to go through our picks, talk about them. We're going to grade each one, so grade all of our picks. And then we are going to then give an overall grade for the team. And then we're going to talk about the AFC East. And what else they do, and maybe give them grades as well. I think we do this almost every year. So let's get to it. Since now, it's easier to grade also the draft now that you've seen everything. Last, we'd only seen one pick. But let's talk about it. First up, round one, pick 16. We talked about this last week, but the consensus on this seems to be this is either Boomerbust. This is either this great guy or he's Vernon Goulston too. What's your thought on this? What's your... Quinton Copples? Quinton Copples. Not Justin: couples spell come I grade or do you want my assessment I want your grade the listeners want your assessment well grade it first I'm gonna give it a B minus okay the reason why it's a B minus is because we had the pick of the litter kind of at the position that we were gonna pick in and we picked a guy that seemed like he was one of the riskier ones like there were a bunch of other players at the same or similar position that went Within the next 10 to 12 picks right that seemed less risky including ones that were picked by the Pats and There's another one that was picked by I Think Chicago picked another like outside linebacker defensive end type But but either way, I mean the guy seems to have the talent Seems to have the size Rex really loved him. I mean he's not gonna say anything different now Now that he's a jetties, you know, of course, I loved him. I worked him out personally. I loved him. Of course you did That's why you picked him But the whole rap on like take games off takes plays off Yeah, it's got that warrior got that sort of written all over it But I like I like I like the high reward. Jake: Yeah. Justin: The high risk? High reward? Ooh, I like. So that's why it's a B minus and not anything above or below. I'll say I like the position. I like that they drafted the position that they drafted. So you know, the defensive end. outside linebacker Blitzer could slide inside, sort of reminds you of like a Justin Tuck style of player that could play and play inside move around that's
00 Justin: the way the giants use Tuck quite a bit especially when you know Pierre Paul and Yuma Yura are when all three of them are on the field they sort of like move them around So I feel like this guy fits in that mold, like big enough to play inside, fast enough to play outside. Um, so I'll give it a B- just because of the riskiness factor of like his character. Jake: Yeah, I think I'm gonna give it like, I'm gonna give it a C, I'm gonna lower, and the reason I'm gonna give it a C is because they tried to trade down. So they didn't need to, this guy wasn't going off the board at 16. He wasn't. This guy was going off the board lower. for. So I feel like if you try and they waited to the last second on this one again I was I was there and they think little last second they were trying to trade out and we know that so To me that means you were trying to do something you didn't do it They could if they love this guy They could have picked him up probably in the 20s and probably gotten a couple right we didn't have a fourth round pick this Year because we got someone else we got you know who That's the thing. We'll never mention his name ever again But I feel like that's why it's a C, because you didn't go up and get someone amazing, which I think they tried to do as well, right? They couldn't get out of this spot, so then they picked the guy, but you probably didn't need to pick him at 16. Again, in rookie, Wagesk and all that, who cares? If he's dominating... Justin: They picked the guy they wanted. It was kind of like Seattle at 15, right before us. They picked the guy they wanted. That was the one pick, like in the first round, and all the experts were like, oh, this is a reach. Right. Okay, but they wanted that guy. And if he's good, he's good. It's not a reach if he plays well. So, you know. It's what you need to get him there or you could have gotten him pretty well. But if you can't trade down, you can't trade down. If he's not gonna be there in the second round when you pick, you know, Coppos wasn't gonna be there at 43. Let's put it that way. And if he was. He might've been in the 20s though. Well, they picked 16 and they wanted him. So they picked him. Jake: Next up, Stephen Hill. The wide receiver from Georgia Tech. Justin: Give me a grade and some analysis. This is a tough one because it would appear as though he's got all the physical ability that you'd want from a receiver. and I'm gonna throw the jet fans let's be patient with this guy out there because really well I am one sort of kind of more of a broadcaster yeah but you know first round receivers typically don't even have crazy years and this is a second round receiver so like You know I went back and looked at a couple of the first round receivers over the last couple years We did that on the podcast two days before we did it. I looked at their stats yesterday I was looking in like AJ Green Julio Jones They had pretty good years for rookies right but neither of them caught more than 65 balls AJ Green went for just over a thousand yards and neither of them had more than eight touchdowns.
03 Justin: And they had really good years for rookies. I went back and looked at like, he nicks, he had like 40 something catches for like 800 yards and that was like a really good season for first round wide receivers. So I don't expect this guy to do much of anything to be honest. So give me some stats, what do you just think? like 25 catches maybe. Yeah, 400 some odd yards, maybe a couple touchdowns. That's about it. A couple big plays like down the field here or there. I don't expect much from him. I don't expect him to be on the field all that much in like I feel like he's going to be that like that guy like like Turner was last year like. Oh okay, Turner's on the field, they're running. There's no fucking way in the world that they're gonna pass the block. He's blocked it twice all year. Jake: Twice a year they put Turner on and threw the ball. Justin: Yeah, like okay, they're running. So you know he has experience in a package, like an option package in college. He'll be a good blocker. We just picked the most, the highest rated blocker. You know that's a skill, right? You have a receiver who can block and you don't have to like... That's that's actually a good skill like like oh, we picked this receiver because he's a great blocker No, we picked this receiver because he's got receiver skills, but he just so happens that he can block so that's a good thing We liked Braylon Edwards why he was a good blocker right? Oh, so what was your what was your? I'm gonna give this pick a C to C minus. I like the position again I think they did well pick the receiver Whether he was the right one time three years from now, we'll know but we will not know now You don't like it now, but the C- you don't really I I don't think he's gonna be an impact player But I don't know you're saying at the position I don't think you can pick well I don't think at 43 you can pick a receiver that is gonna make an impact I feel like either impact receivers are picked in the top 10 Or they're like completely off the radar guys that go in the seventh round or unrestricted free-aging guys. Jake: Like Jordan White. Like we picked this out of them. Yeah, like him. Yeah, I actually like this pick more just because it was need. Like there's a gap filled by, you know, or empty out there in our thing. And we need a big fast guy who has some threat. Agreed. How much he actually gets the ball. I actually like this pick because in the he... again, in the blocking... He's fast, he's big, works with Sanchez. I think this is good. I hate it every time they announce the pick because they're like, this will be great. I saw this in so many articles. They kept saying in the articles, this guy will be great. He'll be someone for Tebow to throw to. And I literally, I'm going to lose my mind before the season starts. That's the way they're treating this is like, it's going to be so good for someone for Tebow to throw to. I'm like. I cannot believe it. Anyway, I might have to put a hit out on Tim Tebow. So I like this pick. I think it's more of an A- pick. Again, if he's not going to put... In your first second round, you need players who are on the field all the time doing work.
02 Jake: And I think he'll be on the field. I think it'll be all the time. I'm not sure he'll be doing that much. I think so you probably could have picked someone else in that position. But, um, all right. Uh, next up to Mario Davis, round three, pick 77. Justin: Yep. Outside linebacker, outside linebacker thoughts. I like this pick. I like it a lot. I feel like, you know, I'm actually looking back right now. Um, and I'm trying to figure out. If in the Rex Ryan era, the Jets have picked a linebacker. And they haven't. This is the first linebacker that in the Rex Ryan era has come in as a rookie. Interesting. And I feel like this is a good thing. I don't know this guy from a hole in the head. I haven't read any analysis about this particular player. I remember those named Damario Davis all I know is he's a linebacker and we haven't picked an outside linebacker or rusher like that and and like I Feel like this this is gonna be a good thing without even really knowing him I'm giving it an a-minus because we needed that position and Rex can develop linebackers. Jake: I'll give it a B for Bart. The Bart's got replacement. Justin: Apparently he's an outside linebacker. Jake: Yeah, this is the guy for Bart, when Bart goes by by. Justin: Can you believe we haven't picked a linebacker in the Rex Ryan era? This is the only guy we've picked. So we had, well no, what about Moiga, Maga, whatever his name is. He might've been like, non-drafted. Yeah. But in Rex's first year, we picked Kyle Wilson. Vlad Dukash, Joe McKnight and Connor. And that was it. We had those four picks. That's right. We had a lot of, we had- And the next year, last year, we picked Wilkerson, Kendrick Ellis, Bilal Powell, Curly, McElroy and Scotty McKnight. So no linebacker there either. I don't know how to good picks. I hate to say it, but if you well look at some We like well our second round pick last year was Antonio Cromartie Okay, yeah, Kenra Gellis was always a project. Yeah, so we'll see more from him Maybe this year probably even next the year after Palal Powell again didn't have a shot. He was the fourth running back barely dressed So we'll see him this year probably picking up another one this year And you know seventh round quarterback, whatever, you know, right next up Josh Bush safety at awake forest Great in the analysis Sixth round safety sounds good to me. That's probably about where you pick your safety I mean Kerry Rhodes is like a fourth or fifth rounder It turned out pretty good. Jimmy Leonard was not an early round pick. This is where his safeties come from. It's all about coaching. Jake: When I look at this overall picks right now, what I like is that it is a mix. Last year it was defense, defense, and offense.
03 Jake: What was the third pick? Justin: Yeah, we picked defense, defense, then we went all offense. Right. Jake: So then this one is defense, offense, defense, defense, offense, offense, defense. Offense, so it's kind of nice mix so like you feel like you're mixing it up there right a little mixed bag Justin: Yeah, safety. We need a safe and he safety help. I don't know if Josh Bush is any good I'll just I'm grading the position I'm gonna give it a B for picking a safety in the sixth round sounds right all right. I'll give it Yeah, B sounds good next plan. These are like the worst grades ever not very scientific right? What none of it is Running back great. I love it Terrence. I love me another six-round running back. Yeah. Yeah I love six-round running backs. Just give me a whole team of six-round running back. This is my favorite pick of the draft Jake: Is it? Yeah, I just did something about this guy He's a big mother and I just I think he will I think he'll be our third running back Justin: Really really so they are second on green Joe McKnight And then this guy, not Balal Powell? Jake: No, I think Balal Powell's done. Just whatever. Yeah, I actually think it'll be Sean. Actually, he might be second. I think it's not a third, and I think it'll move right into second. I hope so. This is that big, I mean a 6 foot, 230 pound, 240 pound guy. That's a big dude. He's a big guy. And then we went right after him and picked up... We picked up Robert Griffin from Baylor. His, his, uh... Justin: We picked up like the best quarterback the second best. Yeah, they're calling him RG to RG to You should call him RG 300, but anyway Jake: It was the pick but this is the guy who played with Terrence. It's his short. You know, so what have we got? How heavy is he he's huge? That's why they should call him RG 300. Yeah, I already threw head. That's even better. You're right He is 6'6", 340. That's a big dude. I like it. He's a big dude. That's where you pick the beef. Justin: 6' round, pick the big boy. I like the beef in the round. We like it. So that, those two picks, I'm going to combine for A. I like his name. I like the school. We picked him back to back, right? Yes. Two guys from Baylor are back to back. Two guys from Baylor are back to back. They must have been looking at tape of... Gan away running back and then saw holes being opened by Griffin and said who the fuck is that guy? Yeah, okay We'll just pick them both right we got to pick they're looking at the tape Jake: They're like yeah, we were watching bail it all for the pick them We did forget our fourth round pick which is a little bit I always tenon bomb always does this and I love it and I forget about me to you bow Yeah, when he goes oh well, you know he said well the first three first four rounds. We did pretty well We got this guy And in the fourth round we got Tim Tebow. Right. And you're like- Justin: Like Cromartie we got in the second round last year. Jake: Yeah, and you know what? You forget that that's what you- that's where you picked him. You- that's what you did. You gave up to get him. And in some ways, a fourth round, when you're looking at all this raw talent and all these people who many of them will never even see the field, you're like, Oh, okay. a, you know, a option backup quarterback with incredible physical skills and like, you know,
01 Jake: put his head through wall kind of guy who might, you know, bring some new schemes to an option package run by whatever. Yeah, that sounds like a good pick. I'd be happy with that. I mean, Justin: again, if you took away the T-Bowl back. Oh, and by the way, he'll probably make the team a lot of money and he'll probably walk on water at some point and the owner will make a lot of money and he'll love you for it yeah so do we have to go to the seventh round picks yeah well what do you mean we picked a safety and a receiver the odds of these guys being on the roster yeah, probably good for the safety not so good for the wide receiver he probably won't be on the roster Yeah, probably Jordan white wide receiver Western, Michigan unless you're just awesome in preseason You're probably not gonna be on the roster. You will not be there, but Antonio Allen you got a shot. So Shot so overall thoughts on the Jets draft. I Think they drafted the right positions. They needed to upgrade with the pass rusher They did that in the first round. They needed a linebacker. They got that. They needed a receiver. They drafted one. I mean That typically takes a little while to develop but they got a guy with talent or physical attributes that they liked And then they stockpiled they got a big fat guy, which I always love They always you know, they draft a running back. You can never have too many just floating around on the roster and they grabbed two safeties which was an area of need at the right spots in the draft so i think they had a really to me they had a good draft not a great draft you know they give me grade i'll give them a b b minus yeah i'm gonna go more b minus i feel like if your top two picks Jake: are kind of like question marks i think you want i know i know the whole draft is a question mark but like the top two picks are kind of question marks You know Hill didn't really play or do a lot in college. He's in an option. I know he barely caught the ball So it's like these are question marks. I don't think in the first two rounds you need to have question marks You need to have home runs But again, who knows I'm more on the B-minus side All right. So let's talk about the AFC East now. Let's start off with the Miami Dolphins their big pic when this thing is annoying Justin: I just went to this website that you sent me to look at all the draft picks and the grades for each of the thing thing at the top Know that the the thing with the Jets second round pick they graded Stephen Hill with an a But they wrote this was the Jets best pick of the draft I never loved Hill as a first round guy But getting them in the middle of the second is great value Gives the Jets a home run threat for Tim Tebow to throw to right? That's the analysis tongue in cheek Jake: But it's annoying. I don't even feel like it's tongue in cheek. Well, hey, listen, I bet the person who remained nameless, I bet him yesterday what I bet him, that Tim Tebow... Sanchez will be the starter all year. Right, I bet on the Sanchez will be the starter. He bet that Tim Tebow will be the starter by week 15. Right. Full on starter, and without any injury to Sanchez, so... Alright, so let's talk about dolphins. Dolphins, really the big one was their quarterback, Ryan Tannehill.
01 Jake: That was like everyone knew they were doing that. Yeah, it was a little bit, you know, most people thought it was a reach. I actually looked at their draft board here. I thought their pick of the litter there was Lamar Miller, the running back from Miami. He's a scary running back from the tape I've seen on him and ran up on him. That's the one that I look at him like, wow. Justin: Does that mean that they sort of, I guess not, because he's a fourth round pick. Like they're not giving up on the Daniel Thomas that they just picked, like in the first or second round last year. Daniel Thomas like had pieces last year that were good. I the a- He was hurt. He was rookie running back. They get hurt. Jake: But he had spurts. I feel like Reggie Bush is going to be a no-show this year. I just feel like he's going to disappear. Yeah? Yeah. Um, yeah. I mean, I had a great year last year. I just feel like he's- Kind of one and done. So overall, what do you think about the dolphins draft here? I Justin: I feel like I'm glad they picked Tana Hill like it was one of those like Pressure is he start the whole season star? Oh, we think you'll start although he probably shouldn't I feel like the difference between him and Matt Moore is probably upside Yeah, it's so negligible on the surface that they probably just go with the rookie new head coach, you get the chance but it was one of those things where like they probably I mean they probably didn't want to pick him at 8 right there are probably better players for them to pick at 8 right but they sort of had to pick a quarterback, so they picked him. Right. They probably tried to trade out, too. Jake: Yeah, it's one of those weird things. So just a little quick question. So three years ago, a brand new head coach comes to a team, and in the draft, they pick a number six. They pick a, what was it, six or four? I think it was five. Five, you're right, five is six is his thing. They pick a rookie quarterback. That's correct. Who then comes in and starts the entire season. And that team goes to AFC, AF Championships. They do. Alright, so that's a high bar for me. If this guy, you know, let's see if he does it. Oh, they do that twice in a row, by the way. Justin: So I don't feel like they will. No, I don't think they have weapons. The reason the Jets were able to do that was because Rex Ryan came in as a defensive. Jake: You actually said this the other day, you thought that the Dolphins are going to do well this year. I think they're going to be, I think the Bills will take a step up, I think these guys are going to take a step back. I just, rookie, the whole thing, their biggest weapon is gone. Their second biggest weapon, which I think is, which is Bush, I think he's going to be a no-show this year. That's going to be a lot of rookies. and I do not see them doing very well. So this is a five-win team to me. But, Buffalo Bills, boy, they just said, we're just gonna do a lot of more defense. They start off with a corner, with a 10th pick.
01 Jake: Actually, yeah, they got linebackers, another corner, and then they pick the kicker at the bottom. The corner they pick's supposed to be really good. Visit us at www.beadaholique.com to purchase beading supplies and to get design ideas! uh, Gilmour? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I just, you know, it's like they're all in on their D this year. That's kind of it. Justin: Oh, that's what they should be. They have an offensive head coach. Yep. And their defense was the reason why they were losing games. Not their offense. They could move the ball. Yeah. They weren't terrible till Fitz got injured. Yeah, when they played against I think it was four. And until Fred Jackson got injured too. Yeah. You know, you lose your best player and... in. things fall apart it happens. Yeah and I don't think Fred Jackson's gonna show up this year either I think he's I think he's... Well they have a guy waiting in the wings. Yeah. So uh overall bills scare you? Um they're the bills they don't really scare me they're just the bills. Those are just... I mean, what they got like they wait they went out and free agency. I did nice job They got a good job their defense better be a top 10 defense It's ought to be if it's not then their coaches are doing something wrong, right? Well that then that would be the bills Jake: And then the Patriots are the Patriots except for they did something first of all They never did that. I know as they moved up twice. Yeah, they picked they picked and then look at their board Justin: Oh, they picked defense. Until the last pick. Well, what were they supposed to do? No, it's true. That's exactly what they were supposed to do. Jake: They picked defense. How about a team that goes to the Super Bowl the next year you look at and you're like, oh my God, they just got better. Not only in the free agency. They always do that though. Free agency they went and got. They're the masters. A stud of a wide receiver. And then they just went and got tons of raw talent to throw into their D. Yeah. Justin: I mean, according to this thing. The guys that they drafted aren't all that great the first two picks were good picks, but other than that They reached big time for guys, but whatever they see things the way they see them and they draft guys And then it works out for them, right? They were just even if their defense got no better than it was last year Jake: This is still a team that was in the Super Bowl right like that's the joke Oh, and they have a better wide receiver than they did last year. Yeah, I mean Floyd's good. Well, this is like Justin: You know, they've been uh... And they have the two what? They have the two... They've been saving up to sort of blow their wad and they they blew it this year and they've spent their money, right? They've been like saving up the retirement fund and they were like, all right, let's spend that shit. Jake: A lot of the draft analysis was saying saying, listen, this is it because the... The problem is not getting any younger. They kind of have a window here to go do this again, to win that Super Bowl again. Last year they couldn't do it because of D. They let the Giants, when they wanted to, walk down the field and score, they couldn't stop them. They couldn't stop the Baltimore Ravens. If not for a crazy kick and a dropped ball, they wouldn't even have been there. So they couldn't stop people. Yeah, I mean, they look like they're going all in.
01 Jake: If this only signifies the end of Tom Brady on this, like, it'll be the greatest day ever when he decides to put up his cleats. But yeah, I don't know if it'll work out, but it scares the shit out of me to think that this is a team that was at the Super Bowl last year and got better offensive defense. Justin: Two first round defensive players, like the linebacker, front seven guys. Yeah. and going out in free agency and getting a good wide receiver who knows your system inside and out because he's played in it alright sucks let's move on fuck them what you know my fuck you is for the future it's nice so we can do that every week are you got a couple questions from the Twitter verse a let me ask you something about the draft before we go to yeah because I usually wraps the show yep Washington picked RG3. RG3. Number two overall. Yes. And then they pick another quarterback in the third round. Yeah. What the fuck are they doing? Yeah, what are they doing there? Isn't that stupid? Belt and suspenders is what they call it. Suspenders and belt or whatever. It is stupid, but isn't that like we're picking a guy number two overall Jake: It wouldn't be stupid if they did if they literally had zero quarterbacks on the roster They have other they have a perfectly capable backup and Rex grows exactly a perfectly capable backup So if RG 3 was struggling or whatever got hurt for game cuz he's gonna be running all over the place Justin: What does this do this doesn't do any good for any of them? I don't think It just sounds was weird is that the guy that they picked up sounds like a pretty good quarterback Like he's not just there to be like yeah, I'm talking back up. No, I want to start in the what happens If he looks better and plays better and then you have to play him Jake: No, they won't because the whole red they've done it before Justin: They redskins themselves have done this before Jake: I don't know, that's an oddity to me. Again, the only thing I can think of is if you just, you're literally gonna wipe the slate clean and get rid of everybody and just say, these are the two guys we're gonna go forward and maybe it's a diamond in the rough. Maybe it's the best available player. Maybe, yeah. I've trained in a year or two. Got some questions. So D'Artagnan says, from the draft results this year, have the wide receivers, we chose going to be a positive note for this year. Here. Or to be a bus like Goulston. Are the Jets thinking of getting any free agents bets to help the rookies? Not sure if Holmes is the best teacher or mentor after his actions against the Finns last year in Miami. Fair enough. Questions really about the... Justin: It's more about Hill, cause the 7th round guy, he's not gonna be on the team. No. No, and we have... Well, we get... Remember, we picked up the guy from the Raiders. Well, we can go through it. We have Holmes, we have Shillens, we have Curly. We have... Mo Turner Just sounds like you're doing well Turner's there and then We just drafted Hill. I mean, that's five right? That's generally what you carry five
03 Justin: Maybe have one more, but I think they they have Scotty McKnight, right? They was their seventh round pick last year My gut tells me Braylon Edwards is on his way back. Oh, and I think that'd be a very smart move I don't think he's on his way back. I feel like Jake: You think he's hurt? I don't think he has to retire. I think he's like he I think they got rid of him because they saw Justin: Something in it. They saw something medically that they don't want. Oh, I think they got rid of him cuz he's gonna make him sign him Just some obscenely crazy contract that he thought he was worth. Yeah, and they sold they signed for like a million bucks That's right, but he wouldn't do that with Guys do they they will accept that from someone else but not where they already are Jake: I mean, if nothing else, if healthy, if whatever, you know, he's, the problem is he has both, you know, he has talent, but he also has the ability to drop balls all the time. He is very physical, but I don't know. Justin: I feel like, is he an upgrade over Hill? Like, well, yeah. Hill's a rookie. You don't even know what he is. I know what he is. You know what he is? He's a guy who caught. 43 balls his entire college career is what he is. Brelyn Edwards catches that in a season easy. Okay? Brelyn Edwards had a very good season with the Jets the last season that he was there. He played great in the playoffs. He caught game-winning like catches in the playoffs. Like he was a very good receiver for the Jets. This is true. There's no reason to think that this rookie second round pick is better right now than Braylon Edwards is. Jake: Better than Braylon is right now? Yeah. If Braylon Edwards is a big hurt Pearson. But that's if he's hurt, you have no idea if he's hurt. I don't know. Whatever. I think, I still think it's neat. I don't think we, it doesn't look, it doesn't, do you feel 100% with that, what you just listed as our wide receiving court? No. They need another guy and I- Justin: I feel like it's gonna be Braylon Edwards. If no one else. That's just what my feeling is. I feel like it's gonna be him. Jake: Or we just won't run, we won't throw the ball. Justin: We just won't throw the ball. Yeah, Holmes is gonna have another awful year. Yeah. Because we'll be double teamed every single play. And Keller will have a nice season. Jake: As you do last year And then any another question same so D'Artagnan says any words on the Jets and hard knocks this year they offered to the Falcons the Falcons said no I don't think the hard knocks knows who they're going in with yet I think it's still like I don't think teams want to do it I would love the Jets to do it. I still want to do it for all the reasons that I still want to do it But apparently they offered it to the Falcons the Falcons said no I guarantee we heard that Rex Ryan doesn't want it. I guarantee nobody wants to do that thing Justin: Well, we wanted to do it the first year. Well, yeah, I don't know why people I mean people just don't want to do it Yeah, I think it's cuz it's too real time. It's too like if I think teams would do it if they would air it
06 Justin: after week one. Like not, don't air what we just did in training camp. Literally. Literally yesterday, tomorrow. Jake: What, this week? So they take the week and they air it on Sundays. So they literally take Monday, starting Monday up to Friday I think and then they put it out on the summer show. No, I thought it was like Tuesday. Like the show aired Tuesday. Justin: Cause it gave them like time to like play that, that game. You'd see them like. Play the game. I Feel like it's too real time for people and and they just don't like the idea of Being so I search no one's been nailed it yet I feel like they're having a hard time. The Jaguars wanted to do it really they wanted well Jake: That was the NFL said we don't want you to we don't want you to do it Yeah, no one wants to watch you do it. It has to be a team that people are interested The Jets it's like a perfect thing. The fact of the matter is it actually doesn't Justin: What? It doesn't have to be a team that people are interested in. It is a good show regardless. Yeah. It stands on its own as a good show. It doesn't need to be a team that people are interested in. It doesn't need to be, you know, the Jets with Tebow and all their turmoil and Rex Ryan. It doesn't have to be, you know, the Pats who people would watch or the Cowboys. We've said it twice. It doesn't have to be those teams. It could be the Chiefs. It could be the Bengals. Because they've done it and it was good. Jake: Yeah. I mean, it seems like a perfect storm. We know that the last season they did it with the Jets was one of the most popular hard knocks ever. Justin: Who would you, if it couldn't be the Jets? Who would you want to see? Give me one team, the one that you would want to see. You'd want to see the Broncos. Jake: Oh yeah. You want to see the Peyton Manning stuff go down. Yup, yup. Because I like Peyton Manning as a player, as a person, so I think I would just watch because I'd be interested in that. And I think him going, that's a fun story to watch. It's a good storyline. You know, I look around, even maybe the Bills. I'd be interested in watching the Bills. Here they got their all in on these big stud players coming in. They went the biggest free agency signing of the year. They got all this. I mean, that would be interesting to watch. Justin: I have two. All right. And they're more about the coaches. I'd like to see Seattle. I think P. Caro would be interesting the whole thing up there with all those quarterbacks and what they're doing with them Yeah, with the quarterbacks. And I think the 49ers would be just great Yeah, maybe just great Harbaugh's a real maniac and he'd be a lot of fun Jake: Detroit would be fun too actually. I was about saying Detroit. He's a fucking maniac too Yeah, and coming in off that year that they did very well and they got one of the best receivers in the world. Justin: And they got Stafford, and they got Calvin Johnson, and they got Sue and all that bullshit that he brings along with them. They'd be a good team to watch. They would be a good team. Jake: I'd watch that one. But I want it to be the Jets. Yeah, me too. I just want the circus. And then the last question. Do you think the draft addressed enough of our needs on the O line? He says, personally, I think not.
00 Justin: Personally, I agree. Jake: This is from more mops. Justin: Personally, I agree. I will say I was upset to see David D'Castro go to the Steelers. Because that's like the rich get richer. Right. And I feel like we could have done that. And we didn't. Like we could have picked an offensive lineman in that mold. Right. And like by all accounts the kid's gonna just start as a rookie and be really really good. Right. It's like, oh, you can't pick a guard 16. Well, fuck that. Yeah, you can if he's gonna be good nowadays We're gonna be an all-pro. You just pick them. Like don't worry about where you're picking but again, I Don't think we did enough to solidify the offensive line. We picked what seems like a project right at sixth round 340 pound guy We have Vlogdukas who maybe can pull shit together in year three. Yeah, I mean who knows maybe he'll get Sanchez killed Oh, that's what these projects are right there like year three or four guys I mean Brandon Moore who's been our right guard for the last ten years was a defensive tackle so it's not like we drafted him as an offensive lineman he's a project who turned into one of the better right guards he's good Matt Slossen was a sixth round pick didn't start till like year two or three and is now I still don't think he's that good but at least he's a starting caliber left guard but yeah that right tackle position's not good and we did not address it Nope. Nope. We did not. And maybe there'll be some late free agency something or other that you can piece some things together but otherwise we're going with what we got. Jake: We're going in with the boys that brought us here. Alright well that wraps up the show as it is. Remember to go to JetKingdom.com.
