13 Jake: Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. Justin: Longest Running New York Jets podcast ever. This is Jake in 2012. Joining me with a hundred and whoa, 138 times is this other fucking dude who just came in the door. Justin. How you doing? I'm alright. Alright. I'm over it. You're over it totally all right. I was over it. I was over it. I Was over it. Oh, no, you weren't last week and this past weekend On Sunday just watch me. It took me Saturday Like the little depression there Saturday, but I was over at midweek like I was I was like, I'm done with it I'm over it right and then Got hard on Saturday. Little bit on Saturday. Watching the Bengals in fucking Houston got me upset. Watching them, that was it. But then I got over it. I'm over it. I'm completely over it. Things have moved forward. They've progressed the last couple days. So that's made me feel even better, like a cleansing process. So it's like a good dump. It's like a really good... sloppy shit. This is what the Jets were like. It's like a beer shit. The end of the year, they were just a big sloppy shit. Yeah, so neither one of us pretty. So let's do apologies first. Apologies. Yeah, it wasn't because we didn't podcast because we didn't have time. Right. Like it was the end of the year. Honestly, though, if they had won that game, we probably would have squeezed one into the next day. We would have had to. Right. But because they didn't win, we don't do podcasts right after they lose. Right. Especially after they lose to the Giants and then again, especially after you were you know, we're both away We were on vacation. We were out and about they were in the playoffs We obviously would have had to have done a podcast right before but we figured what's listening that shit anyway Yeah and I listen I we don't we do this because of the way we feel about it and I listen if you're the fans and You and you literally you say doesn't matter win or lose. We need you to talk about the next day. This is cathartic See a therapist. Yes. Don't talk to fucking us. But I honestly, I know I go to shutdown. When they win, I go into give me all the info. Let me see everything. When they lose, I go to who? Who are the Chats? Until Wednesday. And then I'm like, oh, let's talk about the next week. I can't take it. It's just too painful. So to do a podcast that literally we're gonna talk about how shitty they are, I feel like whatever. So we're sorry, one week was a bad week
00 Justin: and the next week we got work just slammed us. So we couldn't do that. So we got a lot to talk about and we're not gonna talk. too much about the past, we're gonna talk a little bit about the future, but we gotta go back and talk some of these things that happened in that last game. Yup, we do. So we'll talk about Holmes, McElroy, talk about Sanchez and Peyton. We'll talk about who will be back and who might not be, and we'll start to do that kind of pre-draft draft talk. Talk about some coaching changes which happened today, yesterday and today. And then we'll take some questions from Facebook. Yes, that's right. Facebook. And then we'll get into the playoffs. And we'll talk about playoffs. Jake: playoffs. Justin: We'll talk about playoffs. Last week, this week, make our picks. Did you make your picks last week? Yeah. Okay, so we'll see how badly you picked. Oh, I think I went 2 and 2. I didn't. Oh, 3 and 1. I don't know. Yeah, so then we'll talk about that. I'm told next week and then we'll get back under our normal schedule and hopefully Okay, we have tons of content to talk about draft You know, yeah, all sorts of stuff for off the off the podcasting throughout the playoffs into the Super Bowl It won't be just it'll have some jet stuff, but it'll be about the playoffs if we keep going like this We might be have a lot to talk about tons Alright, so first thing we have to go back a little bit on the agenda. Holmes is a dick. Holmes is a dick. Yeah, so the official story that I've now read a couple times, you know, I haven't read any official stories. I have my own opinions. Okay, well if you give me the official then I'll tell you what Hunter got into it on in the scrum. Uh-huh in the you know in the huddle and I guess he was bitching him only about something and I think Hunter said, if you don't fucking like it, go sit the fuck down or something. And then it kind of got a little more heated. Then I saw What's His Face come in. And then yeah, literally like Keller came in and they separated them. Then he got benched for the rest of the game and basically put his head down and he was you done. He pulled basically a Randy Moss, he pulled a Terrell Owens, he pulled a uh, he pulled one of these, you know, these pre-Madonnamo- Why are receivers like this? Well, it's, I think it would make them bad, like that they're so fucking full of themselves. I think he pulled himself out of this, this team. What are your opinions? Everybody who's a jet fans knows what happened or didn't happen. So for me This started in week 15. Okay with Holmes. I Saw the dark side of Holmes when He didn't know that he didn't know enough to know the situation when we were getting our asses kicked by the Eagles and Starting to catch a little momentum when he caught that touchdown. Yeah, and then oh this cost us just Guys like him and it's he's the guy that you hate if he's not on your team
03 Justin: Yeah, and now I hate him and he's on my team, right? And that's unfortunate because he's the guy who he catches the first down even though the team's down by 20 and he sticks his arm out and drops the ball kind of guy. He's the guy who does the stupid touchdown dance or the stupid celebration when you're down by 21. Right. And gets a 15 yard penalty. He's that guy that you hate. You're like, yeah, so what Tio you're good, but I fucking hate you and I don't want you on my team Right same thing with like Ocho Cinco and like all those types of guys right there can't they're called cancer and they write the reason so For me, I didn't think he was like that I thought like when we go to the games we see him on the sideline when the defense is on the field He's raising his hands. He's he looks like a team player, right? You know, he was a captain. A lot's been made of that whole captain thing. I don't think that means as much as you know. I love how that's the scapegoat of the season. He's got the C on his chest. Big deal. We didn't get to the playoffs because we picked the wrong captains. Because we picked the wrong captain. No. But it means something to say to guys, a captain, he's a leader. He looked like a leader and he last year made a lot of big plays down the stretch. Huge. One A2 games for us. Yeah, up to I think three and a look I you handily one You know, we needed to resign him. It looked like we needed to resign this guy We did and he laid a big fat Goose egg this year, right and it all to me came out in that week 15 game against the Eagles And he just seems like a very selfish player I'm gonna compare him to Victor Cruz for a moment, okay just going back that giant game whatever he had the 99 yard catch he's come on he's he's been a phenomenon he's he's been great this year but there was a game it might have been the same week week 15 against Washington when the Giants were getting there asking it may not have been that game I don't know it was one of these games where the Giants were not winning yeah Yeah, we're just gonna lose the game. And Victor Cruz, for those who watch the Giants, when he scores a touchdown, he does a little salsa dance, or whatever the dance is that he does. He scored a touchdown, and he handed the ball to the referee and walked to the sideline. The difference is, this guy knew... This is not the time to go salsa dancing. My team is losing. We're getting our ass kicked. We're not gonna win. And I'm not gonna... Like, this is not attention grab time. This is shit. Shut the fuck up. Yeah, we're losing. Scoreboard. It's scoreboard, asshole. Right. When you're in the crowd, you're like, scoreboard, scoreboard, stupid, celebrate all you want, 15 yards. You look like an idiot. And you're gonna lose. And this is a veteran versus a second year player that handled it the way that you're supposed to like showing some respect and showing a little like brains. Yeah. Just dumb. Just dumb. Now you thought that he kind of turned the corner. I mean last year this was not his character.
00 Justin: I agree. The first down thing has always been a little bit of a cringe every time he does it. on the other team and he does that, it's like, go over the middle. Go over the middle so someone could kill you. Go over the middle. But on our team, I cringe every time he does it. Especially when he does it near a ref and he does it and he didn't just hand the ball to the ref, he drops it in front of the ref and you're like, God, that's a dick move. I get it. I like it because you're good. You know what? You can drop the ball and do a little... You know, first down, like a point with your hand or something. Santonio. Yeah, you don't have to have like the whole drop the ball shtick. It's not fun, it's not funny, it's not cool, it's annoying and it makes people not like you. So, quick question. He backed and he just resigned. We have the whole who won't be back thing and I think Holmes is back. I think he is too. He's back and... And he's paying the pennants. He's back and if he's any sort of man, any sort of real football player, he's learned from this and gotten better. Right, hopefully. And the other thing is his contract is structured in such a way that it makes absolutely no sense to not have him back. McElroy is a dick. This guy... Here's the thing. By even talking about him, we're giving him more than he needs. He's the guy who needs to be cut immediately. Because you do not go on a media spree as the third string, fourth string quarterback with a broken arm the whole year. And talk about how it was the worst locker room you've ever been in and shit talk about the Jets fuck up Shut your goddamn mouth and when we cut you no one's picking you up because nobody wants that player I don't go talk to go. I just I don't understand I can't understand why this guy would even talk anything about anything when you're Your fourth stringer shut up. Well, you're lucky. We didn't cut you forever broken arm like Go away. You're a fucking annoying little shit. Alright, next topic, we're getting it out people. The next topic is about, let's do two things. So the Sanchez bashing, all time high. It is the worst it's ever been. And basically there are now two camps of Jet fans. There are the he will never win, he is the worst player to ever play the game. There is the, I think the probably ones that are like the wait and see. See you next week. The pendulum is swinging and there's the we need to get Peyton Manning in here and then there's the you know wait and see with With Sanchez I will say The Jets are not in the playoffs. We're not even the Giants are in the playoffs. They've won a great game They're going on the road to Green Bay for a great rematch And what do I see on the back of the times or not times or Daily News or something. I don't read these papers at all. But like I was in the grocery store buying a coffee and I saw it and it was like Sanchez, you know players don't players don't even like Sanchez, you know, some little caption, some sort of thing that you know for the headlines and I thought to myself.
00 Justin: Really, like this is what's gonna like they're not even in the playoffs like Fucking let them let talk about the Giants the Giants are in the playoffs Let's talk about how great they are like even as a jet fan. I don't want to talk about the Jets Don't talk about Sanchez anymore. It's over. It's done. We're going on the next year. Oh It's so bad. First of all Let's talk about the Peyton Manning thing. I think there's a 0.0% this is like This is like talking about awesome law two years ago. Wouldn't it be awesome if we got awesome law and we could wind up Reavis on one side and awesome law on the other side. This is like the dream team. So I think Jeff Bands are now doing this. Wouldn't it be awesome if we could bring in Peyton Manning and we could win a Super Bowl with him? First of all Peyton Manning never might never ever play another down a football. Let's just put that out there. No one has cleared him to play. He is five months off of where he should have been. He's old and he could literally never be cleared to play again. He might be taking a huge risk if he ever plays again. So let's not pretend like we're signing you know Joe Montana or something who just who's doing great. This is a guy who medically might not ever play again. Second of all, sometimes you just have to stick with your guy. Drew Brees, the guy who's lighting it up, who looks unstoppable, is in his 11 years. He's a quarterback for 11 years. That is a long time. Sanchez, 3. Drew Brees, 11. Peyton Manning, 11. Tom Brady, 9, 10. These guys aren't going to be these guys. And if you're gonna give up on a guy when they're two, three years old, three years into the league, you're basically saying, I want to turn my team over every couple years because I'm an angry fucking stupid fan. You have to be willing to give some part of it to work. Let it work. Did this season shit the bed? Yes. But you still gotta look at the tape. Look at the tape people. Look at the quarterbacks who went into the playoffs this week. and who are rookie quarterbacks or a year ahead of Sanchez and still can't win a game anywhere at home away look at look at Mattie Ice. Oh he's great he's great he wins all these games cannot win in the playoffs looks like shit in the playoffs Colt McCoy can't win the playoffs I mean the list... Colt McCoy where did that come from? Sorry not Colt McCoy, he's the other guy I don't know what you were talking about Bengals. Oh, not Colt McCoy. Not Colt McCoy. Andy Dalton. Andy Dalton. These are rookie. But I just think it's not always going to be the next greatest thing to come down the pike. Sometimes you just gotta sit with your guy and say it's about making it work for him. Look at Michael Vick. He's gonna light up the world! Didn't get the playoffs. No playoffs for you Michael Vick. Like, would you throw away Michael Vick as a quarterback because he didn't make the playoffs this year? I don't know. Like, Roth's Burger. Gets into, gets to shift the bed up in Denver.
04 Justin: Can't get it done. Hurt. Always constantly hurt. Can't get it done. Time to throw him out the window. Tom Brady hasn't won in four years in the playoffs. Time to throw him out the window? Three years. I don't know. I think we have to look at the overall picture as Jet fans and not get so reactionary and be like, like, let's just throw out everything every year and just fire everybody and get ready because those those teams good teams aren't built like that. They're built on sticking with this guy. I think third here and now there's a couple examples like Stafford. Okay, great Stafford can light it up. Here's my prediction. Put it out here. Bold prediction. Look at me. year five, year six, San Chas 5,000 yards. year six, year six, year six, 5,000 yards. That's a long time away. 5,000 yards is a lot of yards. Yep, that's what I'm forgetting. Alright. Thoughts? Well you kind of said it all, you didn't let me say anything. I'll say something. I'm complaining about that. The guy who said this all year, I don't even think we can judge him till next year I don't even think next year's fair. I think you're four and you're five or like how old is this kid? 24 yeah 28 when you get to start like saying a guy's really just unless he's your Marcus Russell, which he's not then you know It's a little unfair. It's a little jump in the gun and all this bullshit. That's like he doesn't work hard. That's now These stories change every week week to week. It's like he's the hardest worker on the team He's the first one in last one out jets players. Don't respect him. He's out like really he lost I know somebody lost last year when he was in the playoffs, you know what they all said where all this headlines work Jeff they're behind this guy because he knows he can just win because he's got guts. He's it's about losing It's just the same thing when you lose people stop respecting you and he comes back. He's right. He wins three games next year Everybody behind you know teams that are historically Good and like consistent. I look at the Steelers as like the best example Yep. You know, there were years... Most of the world rings. Well, I just want to pull this up here. Because the Steelers... I don't even know if I'm going to be able to get like their year-over-year stuff. I wouldn't even know where to go to find it. Probably not. But, um, you know, they've had years where they've won six games. They don't fire their coach, they don't get rid of their, they don't get rid of their, you know, their coordinators, they don't get rid of their, like they don't just go crazy. They, you know, they have years where they don't win and they don't fire their coach, they don't get rid of it. Consistency they build their team correctly. They don't overreact to things and they and they do well More often than not they win Super Bowls they get Super Bowls
01 Justin: They win their division they they do things in their division. They have 12 wins this week This year, you know last year they did so like it's one of those things like You're not gonna win this food boy be here and then you look at the Raiders who just fired their coach yesterday, right Jackson. They've had Six coaches in ten years and over the last ten years their total win percentage is in the 30% range, right? That's why Like you can't win that way. They've had so many starting quarterbacks. They've had so many different coaches They don't give guys a chance. They don't let them grow or evolve together as a football team. They just fire them. It's a win now. And I don't know why they just don't realize that win now is great and all, but like you got to give them a couple years to win now. I think you have to put yourself in a position every year to win now. Meaning you should have the tools every year. to make it because you can make it with rookie quarterbacks, you can make it with little inexperienced coaches, you can do all these things. You should put yourself in a position to win every single year. I don't think you should go into the season being like, well this is the year I'm going to make the playoffs. You should be able to make the playoffs every year. That's what you're going to do. Does it happen every year? No. And it's not going to happen every year. You know, gut feeling at the beginning of this year, I thought this was going to be a letdown year. We were so high for two years it was going to be hard to keep that up. It's going to be hard to keep going at the level that you're going at. My big problem with the season was not Marc Sanchez. It was not San Antonio Holmes. It was not Sean Heimer or McElroy. It really wasn't. My biggest problem with the whole season was they were so consistently inconsistent, which I guess can I can just drop consistently. They were just so inconsistent. Right. They won. This is like their season. They started off. They won two in a row. They lost three in a row. They won three in a row. They lost two in a row. They won three in a row. They lost three in a row. They never had that like win one, lose one, win two, lose one, win one, lose one, win three, lose one. Like it was just so when it was going good, it was going good. When it was going bad, it went real bad. And that was it. Like it was just so- So they won like as many as they lost. That's what you're saying. But they did them in chunks. Like it was like they were, you know, they were 2-0, then they were 2-3. Then they were 5-3. You know, then they were 5-5. Then they were 8-5. Like it was just- They didn't get to 8-8 by win, lose, win, lose, win, lose, win 3, lose 1. Right. Like they couldn't... If they lost one, they were going to lose the next one. Like they couldn't break that. They didn't have the stopper. They didn't have like... And don't you think that this came down to...
02 Justin: To me, it came down to this is a team who just lost who they were this season. Two years ago, we said this like two years ago, you knew what the Jets were. This year I feel like the Jets wanted to be what the media wanted them to be that week. They just weren't that good. Well, no, they all season long, all in the beginning season, it's like, well, this year is time to open it up and let's say just why. I don't think the media didn't, they just weren't that good. They beat zero playoff teams. They just didn't beat anyone good. They just. baht baht weren't that good. They were an average 8 and 18. They had 8 wins. You are who you are. They had zero wins against playoff teams. They played playoff teams. They lost to Baltimore. They lost to New England twice. They lost to Denver. They lost to the Giants. That's like five losses right there, all playoff teams. So like they just weren't that good. Can't beat the teams. You're not good. They just weren't that good. That's it. Let's talk about who won't be back next year. Oh, and my chiming. My... I think there's an earthquake. My thing on Peyton. Yeah? Just quickly. Yeah. Is, uh... Not for nothing else. If you could get Peyton Manning next year, would you take him and bring him in? I would only have Peyton Manning come in. If I had two things, okay One I want the guarantee that he's gonna start all 16 games can't do that. I want guarantees starting week one, okay Can I have that? Yeah, but that means you're literally throwing out your core. No number two is I want Mark Sanchez to sit there and learn from Peyton Manning. Can't do that with that roster spot. It's too much money. That's the only way I'll accept it because I am not giving up on a fifth overall pick who's going into his third or fourth lawsuit. To phase the pull in the Brett Barr for a year or two. Yeah, I want you to learn from this guy who's... Arguably the best ever if not in the top three or five right ever with the best work ethic ever that's documented Knows how to watch tape knows how to get ready for a game knows how to run a team knows how to run a scheme knows how to keep coach on the field right I want you to learn that from and I mean I would love to just get I would love to if they could tell me like you know, Peyton Manning can't play. Right. But you can have him as a backup. I mean, it didn't really help much with Painter, but I don't think Painter and Sanchez are in the same class. Right. It's not even close. So, I think if Peyton could come in and like, like I would hire him as an assistant right now. Yes, but I'm not saying that. He wants to play quarterback. Yeah, but if he can't, then I would say we're gonna... But you basically have to say, you basically have to say to the fans and everybody, See you next week. I just don't think it's realistic to say what is happening in this building where we're being attacked. That's it's giant fans downstairs
01 Justin: Alright, so let's quickly let's talk about who actually let's let's let's do you want to just get rid of the who won't be back Yeah, cuz we got a whole about that. We got a whole bunch of talk about that. Let's talk about the coaching changes So shoddy's gone shoddy is fired. We wrote shoddy fired. But he wasn't fired. He technically wasn't fired. He retired. I feel like there's an alien that's gonna attack us anyone right now. Hey, no, maybe no one can hear this. Aliens? He was fired, right? No, he retired. But he was fired, right? He was, I think what happened I think you called this in the last one. It was kind of, or maybe in our conversations, cause we talked once in a while, was We're not going to fire you because if we fire you then you have no value on the market And we actually like you as a person and we think that you did add to this this organization But realistically we got to pick someone to fire. It can't be Rex because everybody loves him It can't be like it's got to be you dude like the offense was one of the problems Even this is a problem too special teams was a problem this year But, I think it's gotta be you this year. Sorry kid. I was ready to do grades and give special teams the worst grade at all. Well, we'll do grades later. The point is, I think they said, we'll just give you a couple weeks to go look around, because you have been hot before. But if no one finds you and we need to hire someone, I think what we're gonna do is tell you on Tuesday morning to retire and we're gonna hire our guy as soon as you leave. Right. That's what they did. They clearly had the guy lined. Oh, yeah ready to go. You don't hire a guy in 12 hours So do I so okay so Sproun also before we get to Sproun oh? Shoddy yes, they didn't do what we said Meaning they did this right they gave him six years Six years is long enough. That is a long time to Establish yourself right as either Were we ever a top 10 offense ever? Hard to say. I believe that his, I've said this before, I think the best job he ever did with the Jets was his first year. When he came in, when he came in that first year with Mangini and Mangini's first year, they ran this offense that was very tricky and it was geared towards the talent that they had on the team at the time right and they ran this very Chad Pennington running it right and it worked and Then in year two Pennington got hurt and that kind of screwed things up, right? Year 3 Brett Favre came in to save the day and that kind of screwed things up cuz not He's far. We did not what? What far does he didn't move? We didn't change the offense No, I can't off right. He is what he is and then he got hurt like I feel like that was actually a good offense But he got hurt you like his shoulders all messed up and he wouldn't come out of the game And he probably should have right Can't you know then he has a rookie quarterback with Sanchez?
03 Justin: He's got a mentor and grow so Overall, I don't think he ever did a really bad job. I just don't think he did a really good job right he was just average he was ever and after six years And three years with a roof like growing a rookie They you know they must have felt like this year should have been better than it was right and it wasn't and there needs to be a scapegoat because it's always someone's fault and I Feel like this was part like If they didn't get rid of him, they would have gotten just... Mutiny. Creamed. Right. And this was one of those like... Well you kind of have to say at this point, this is the thing is, I think they have to say it, they kind of have to say it's either Rex, Sanchez, or Shoddy. Yeah and Rex and Sanchez are like kind of tied. They're tied. Well, which one of these things doesn't belong? Rex picked Sanchez. Sanchez is Rex's guy. I traded up for him. Shoddy is not. Shoddy is... He inherited him. He inherited him. What I like about this move, and I said this before, maybe sit in the podcast, maybe I dreamt it. What I like about this move is, now we're at no excuses time. Rex, pick the guy who you want. Pick the guy who you want to go fucking eat sandwiches with. . Pick the guy who when you talk about ground and pound, the guy sitting behind you goes, YEAH! Fucking ground and pound! I want you to pick the guy that you guys agree 100% Pick your twin. Don't give a shit. Pick somebody who you... Because almost every year now we've had that like that moment in the season where Rex has got to come in and have more chan- Like this year was towards he's like Rex wanted to have more Wildcat in there and then they decided not to use it for an entire game. But like... It just seemed like there wasn't always 100. It always seemed like he'll let Shoddy do what he needs to do until he's not doing what he wants to do. Then he's gonna come in, but then you're kind of messing in the kitchen. We just want to pick a guy who he agrees with, who they are fundamentally that come from the same lineage of what to do on the field. And he has. it looks like. So we now have Sperano. Forever, it's good that we've learned how to say his name, haven't been my wife as a Dolphin fan, but now we have Sperano as our offensive coordinator, hired mere moments after Shadi was fired. Thoughts? I don't know enough about him as a coordinator. I thought he was a good head coach in Miami. I don't think he ever had any talent necessarily to do a whole lot in Miami. I always thought he got the most out of what he had, which I like. I always thought he did a good job with the cards that he was dealt. He made the playoffs and won the division. You know with that first year with chad pennington as a quarterback and running the wildcat first to bring R
00 Justin: Defense is really strong. But again, this is we're not hiring to do defense But sort of a reflection on him as a as a T-Roy's tough they always ran the ball pretty well, which I like I think that that That mentality matches with with Rex and you know one of so one thing I'm just not sure of I don't know if he's ever coordinated anything like I know he is the head coach that's different than being a coordinator and like creating the game plan and doing all the calling the plays and stuff like I don't know if he's ever done this so that'll be interesting to see The one thing that I think is a huge bonus is that he coached in the division as a head coach. So there's a few things that come from that. One, he already knows... A, he knows the Dolphins better than anyone. And B, he knows the other teams in the division. He knows the Bills, he knows Patriots, he knows everything. And the big one is, he knows us. He knows the Jets. He's beaten the Jets. He knows what we do good. I think he's probably 55... I bet he's beaten us. I don't know. But I feel like there's that one year they swept us. I think we swept them last year. I think we split with them this year. The year before... So I bet it's probably like 55. He knows how to beat the Jets. He's played the Jets the last three years under Rex Ryan. We had the game plan the whole thing. He's had the game plan the Jets. And I think that can help because he's played us twice a year for the last four years So he knows what we do well, and he knows what we do real awful And what he what teams should try and do to the Jets to make them Which I think if you know your weaknesses You can improve on them and like either hide them or improve on them or? Just that's a good thing. I think he has Insight and I'm just glad that they didn't you know, it wasn't just shoddy But Callahan also telling kind of the right hand, you know The offensive line coach who I think had more input than just that now I worried that if they were to get rid of shoddy that the job would just go to Callahan Yeah And I actually thought well shoddy might get a head coaching job and Callahan will just go and be his offensive coordinator Right and I was hoping that that would just happen But then when it looked like shoddy wasn't gonna get a head coaching job I was hoping his father got the Tampa job so that he would just go there, but now it just doesn't matter They just got rid of him right he left retired Quit so yeah, I mean I You I can't really say it was a bad hire. Well. You can't you can't I don't know Well back in three years and no Yeah. Here's what I like about it. I always felt, not we had this conversation earlier, so I'll just repeat it. I always felt that Shadi was like, and I think he never had this position before. He was the assistant, wasn't he? I think he coached quarterbacks with San Diego. Right,
01 Justin: so he was never the offensive coordinator. Not that Esprano is, but I feel like he was always a little bit, like while he had creative moments, I always felt like he was a little bit... This he was a little bit Peter principle I think he'd been put in a position that he wasn't really comfortable in or really wasn't going to excel and now he could have Been like a breakout and been like a genius and done it. He had his shot He did that but he but then it didn't work out early on Yeah, he was a hot candidate for jobs all over the place because he did a good job. It just It got stale it got old and it it was not explosive. It was predictable Oh, and it just didn't work That was one thing watching the playoffs this last weekend and watching some of the teams and watching how they played the game You know if there's nothing else and watching especially Denver We should probably get off the Jets and talk about the playoffs from the second But there's nothing else to watch in Denver was Games can be won if you just take your shots at the right time. And we kept screaming, when are they going to take their shots? Like they've got these guys who could, but they never would take them. Whether it was timing, whether it was whatever, they would just never take those shots. I mean they did them a couple times. We're like, we always saw it when they get to the 30. Take a shot. Like in this NFL, with the no touching anybody ever, with the penalties, with the past interference, with, you know, it's like... It's almost a no-brainer. You're gonna do well if you take a shot giant game was the biggest indictment on you're gonna throw 59 attempts and not even get 300 yards, right? That means you're throwing the ball like six yards down the field right 60 times. That's just retarded So, okay, let's so the other thing is they're talking to Todd Haley Which I think is good. He's been with the Jets before. He was, I think, the receiver's coach under Parcels, I think. Wow, lots of memory. I think he coached Keeshawn in them, I think, I believe, and Kerbet. That was a good receiving court. Ran the offense in Arizona when they went to the Super Bowls. He's got the pedigree to run offense. He knows offense, the Chiefs offense, over the last couple years. They got pretty banged up this year, so not easy to tell, but they were decent last year. The guy knows what he's doing on offense. If they could get a little tandem of him and Sperano in there and Haley handles play calling and Sperano's more of an executive type. Just the heavy and just help out here and there, maybe just more experience on a sideline. at night. I am. As long as there's not too many cooks in the kitchen and they bounce off each other More like in-game management having three head coaches on the sideline can't hurt I wouldn't think unless it hurts, but okay, so let's jump off that let's take some questions because yeah, let's take questions I'm ready to answer Matt Keach from Says Jake Justin long-time listener Matt on JK forums
01 Justin: Do you think the Jets should target a big name running back this season in free agency or on the draft? No Okay, why I don't think free agent running backs are worse it ever almost never I agree I think you couldn't just keep you don't even have to draft a guy in the first round second round Third or fourth rounds where to go and running back situation It's just a matter of picking the right guy, but we've done it three straight years, I think, where we've picked the running back in the third or fourth round. Keep picking. Sean Green, McKnight, Paul Powell. I mean, you know, Sean Green's the best of the three, we think. Right. I don't think McKnight's ever going to be much of a running back. And who knows what Powell, he never got on the field. Which can't really... You never know Kind of crowd of nowhere so like why waste like a first-round pick when you can You know look at like a Mod Bradshaw seventh round pick or right the guys in New Orleans are you know? Free agent nobodies right are all like like like rookie free It's like sproles was a late-round pick right here pick them up off for him say Right yeah, but pick the bottle sure you could These are guys Reggie Bush third overall pick Darren Sproles seventh round pick who'd you rather have right? I'm asking this point right no kidding player. No kidding That's why you don't sign for agent running back. You don't do it. Just draft them right and I don't at this point Number one, again, we have seen with the talent that we have that we can be a good running team with John Green, with LT, with a whole group of people back there. And I don't think running teams really, I mean, you look at some of these teams that just lose their quarterbacks, I mean, they lose their running backs left and right. And they can still run the ball. It doesn't matter. The line is everything. Play calling the line. You know, I rather, I almost just want, and I know this is crazy talk, if we're gonna get Plastico back, we're gonna get Holmes back, we got Curly, probably draft, it's like, could we just spend the first five packs on line, D line, O line, that's it. Go D-O, D-O, D-O, all the way down. Spelled Doodoo. Houston is a great example of just a great running team. They can just run the ball. And Nariam Foster's phenomenal. He was like a sixth round pick or something like that. He sits down. They bring in Tate He said from I think he was like a first round picks. They didn't know that they had area foster You know you draft a guy cuz you don't know that the guy you really drafted the year before in the sixth or seventh Round is an animal right, but it's really not it's your system. So Don't think they should go after a big-time free agent running for easy ones, too They get paid and they just didn't they get hurt. Well, they've already been in the league They've already gotten banged up for three years. You may as well draft a guy who hasn't been I don't know who the friends are and I'm sure if we you know, you could think of you'll get Sperano There's no free agent there to come from Miami that we would want Chiefs, we got Haley, would we want to go and maybe Jamal Charles is like a freebie
03 Justin: or a low round pick because he's possibly hurt? I don't think they'd be giving up on him all that quickly. Okay. Alright, so that's it. Next one. Guys, long time listening from Ireland. Couple of things worry me. Cool. Yeah. What are we going to do about our inability to cover tight ends defensively? Sandbell. Well, It's Jim Knee. Not Sam Bell. Not Sam Bell. What are we gonna do? One, what is the double part? What are we gonna do about our inability to cover tight ends defensively? What's the second part? I'll answer that one first. I honestly, I don't know enough about the exes of football to say what we can do about... Here's my guess. Bring in some... faster, better linebackers and safeties. That's all safety. Is that it? Safeties and linebackers, right? Yeah, it's all safety. I feel like we got torched this year but I feel like statistically watching most teams I think most teams got torched by tight ends. Two of the top five receivers in the league this year were tight ends. Graham and Gronkowski ruled this league this year. I think it's become this thing where This is what teams are gaming around because you can get these six five motherfuckers It all started with like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates and you get these huge guys basketball players You can't they're too big the safeties are they're not you can't get a you can't get a six five safety Who's fast who can cover these are too small linebackers are too slow, right? So it's really the soft spot on almost every team. So I feel like yes, we've got We got torched, but my guess is every team got torched. Our leading receiver was our tight end. Right. I just think it's a position That's very hard to cover but to answer Eric Smith not a good player. No, not a good safety. Not a good player. No, gotta go with him. And in reality Bart Scott not a guy who could cover anybody our outside linebackers I mean really the answer is just better players yeah I don't know schematically there's much of anything that's different that we could do differently obviously Jim Leonard getting hurt Hurts cuz he's a little better We got torched by tight ends sure though And you know what Gronkowski playing him twice and Hernandez playing him twice you're gonna get yeah those guys are gonna get there It doesn't matter who you are Second question is Cumberland any better than Mulligan. Yes, who's a liability if not? Morgan should be cut and blocking time already. Yeah, you should be gone and Cumberland I thought I don't ever hear that guy's name unless he's catching a touchdown Or doing a great was the worst but he got called on so many fucking pound. No, he's got a gun gone gone he can't pick and Cumberland from what I can recall was more of a Receiver right not really a blocking tight end But they had that guy Baker in there. Maybe he was a little better. I mean The reality is, they shouldn't be lining up in too many too tight end sets.
02 Justin: They just shouldn't. Like, I don't see the need for it. They should be in three wide all the time, or too wide with John Connor. There shouldn't be too many times where they have two tight ends on the field. And the guy who should be on the field is Dustin Keller. And that's it. Let's. Let's go on and talk about the playoffs. All right. Did you watch? I watched every game. I did not. Well, you're a loser. No, I just didn't. You went to one of them. Oh, I love. I went to a game. So I watched both Saturday games and I watched both Sunday games. Yeah, I watched it. I watched. So I and I. Good chunk of the New Orleans Detroit game at the bar, but then left before the end. I was at the Giants game and Because of that sort of got home in the middle of the Pittsburgh game and I left I left at halftime to go play basketball really didn't care really one of those things is just huge NFL fan, but just I guess it was part of the process of just like getting over it. I just didn't care that much this week I will be watching every game it showed in your picks because you didn't pick so you got zero. I don't think yeah What do you mean? No, I was checking to pick them. Oh, I didn't even know that went into the playoffs Oh, yeah, those always do I just like you do that. I didn't pick there. No, I know and you I picked in our other our thing that we You know our thing that we pick it. Yeah, well this one we pick into but it doesn't matter I mean you basically have a hundred and you're You're the the only you're the worst person who's actually still playing. How's that? The other two guys are still whatever and you're far behind Last week the only person did well is my brother-in-law who got a three actually. Sorry, New York's exchange got three Matty jets who just we talked about I think he got a zero so he picked all wrong. I got twos With three weeks to go. So I got a four-point lead on my brother-in-law, which is important and I'm tied first That's good. So I might be able to pull it out. That's cool But let's make our picks for this week. Well, you'll spend a fix for this week We'll talk about what happened last week as we make the pics All right, so let's do our picks this week. I'm gonna do it in the other pool that we're in just so I know I get Them in there. Oh, I don't even care about this one. No, you gotta do in this one cuz that's what people are playing Yeah, I'll go in there, too. Yeah All right. I also read the way you like it. That's true. This way does have the good stuff. All right, so the first game is Saturday at 130 430 Oh, that's stupid. You're good. This is a broadcast. This sucks. All right, so Saturday at 4 30. Yep, New Orleans is going to San Francisco and this motherfucker will be in New Orleans So I will be at a bar somewhere in the French quarter
04 Justin: rooting the Saints on You covered three points. Yeah, cuz I got to cuz I'll be there and I'll be rude even though my heart tells me I got to go with the Saints my heads telling me San Francisco's gonna win that game I don't think so at all I don't know the Saints are on fire on fire But like in this so in our other thing in this one there it's three Yeah, in the other one, San Francisco is getting 3.5 at home. And I'm taking San Francisco in that one. If anybody can go more than 3 points, it's gonna be Noroleans. Okay. San Francisco has great defense, but I just feel like Noroleans is on fire. And it's not cold. If it were Noroleans in... They're out. It's muddy as shit though. Yeah, they're gonna they've been watering that field with buckets of water They've been the last two. Yeah, I mean I watched the game last week. It was uh, Norlien's against Detroit Detroit Detroit's defenses horrid Yeah But that was an interesting game because it was close the entire game that Saints were down at the half Came back and just tore them a new breeze could score 14 points in two possessions that total two minutes. They didn't punt in the second half. They don't have to. Drew Brees is that good. Yeah, so I don't think that this and Drew is... And they have a defense that's good enough. They're good enough. They're not great, but they're good and they got a couple players. They're good enough. This is gonna be a close game. I feel like it's gonna be close and I feel like if San Francisco could keep New Orleans under 30, they have a chance. Because I don't think San Francisco can score 30. That's what I mean they have to tell me New Orleans under 34. Yeah, they can Thank you. They're all right. I'm gonna pick the Saints. All right, then we got the T-Bose that T-Bose and why was I watched the first like I watched like the second quarter and I left remember I told you I was playing back you guys are texting me like oh Well, they got T-Bode and I didn't see it I don't I don't feel bad for anybody in that game Well, I mean, that was Stuars, Stuars Denver, I watched the whole game. Good, fuck them, fuck both of them, I hate these teams. It's true, I hate, this is the same thing with this week, I hate both these teams, it's basically who do I not want to win. Right. But New England is, is, uh, 13 and a half point favorites. They are, they are, and I'm picking Denver. I'm picking Denver too, I don't think they're gonna get beat by that much. You know why I can, New England, New England, they don't win in the playoffs. Aww, nice, nice. You think Denver wins straight up? You think Tebow will Tebow the king of Tebowing? Yeah, it's gonna be a good one. They're gonna win? Are you calling the Denver Tebow to win a Goats of Patriots in Foxborough in January for the playoffs? I think they might win. No, no, no. Are you saying they will win? Not Might. Might is a... I mean the spread absolutely will take them very of course, but do you think they're gonna win the game? Yeah, all right. You're so you're saying they're gonna win the game not like oh, yeah, wouldn't it be cool? But like they're gonna win the game Yeah, so you place money on it on this spread you on the money. I think I get pretty good odds
05 Justin: I put some money on them. I I do not think they're gonna win the game I think the Patriots will win the game. I think they will it will be closer than this. I I do not think it's gonna be a 13 head game. And again, this is a win-win-lose-lose. If Tebow looks like a piece of shit and loses... At this point I want Denver to just win the Super Bowl. Just get it over with. So he can become... Just get it over with. He will float above the earth and go up to heaven at that point. Yeah, just get it over with. Second coming of Christ. Yeah. I want... him in the White House. I'm picking Denver. Give me a 13 F1. Alright, moving on to Sunday. The early game, this is probably the crappiest game in the weekend. I don't think so. I think it's the crappie game. Baltimore's hosting Oh, the weekend is the crappiest game. Yeah, the weekend. Baltimore's hosting Houston. And in both of our pools, Baltimore's giving 7.5. I think this is the game that the wheels come off for TJ eights and I think Baltimore at home is a handful as we witness this year seven and a half a decent amount of points, but I'm gonna take Baltimore. Yeah, I think Baltimore win this game, but I do not I don't think Baltimore has the weapons to put up a ton of points. No, they don't but Houston has Here's the thing. I've been rooting Against Like I was big-time rooting just against Matt Ryan and Like against Andy Dalton. I just didn't want young quarterbacks in this game It's like do I want Flacco to win or TJ Yates? Flacco points on his fifth year. Fourth. Fourth? He's the same as Matt Ryan. Okay. Their year ahead is Sanchez. So he's on his fourth year. He's been in the playoffs It's just selfish and I know it's basically to prove your own point Yeah, Sanchez is better than both. Well, Flacco's won a bunch of playoff games. Like, he's won them on the road too. He's the guy who's, if you asked anyone, Matt Ryan's a better quarterback than Joe Flacco. Oh, yeah. But Joe Flacco's the one that wins the playoff games. I mean, he's the one who's tied with Sanchez for those four road playoff games. Yeah. And Eli can tie them, I think, this week if he gets them in here. That was Eli's first home playoff victory ever. That was awesome. I didn't want to go, but it was awesome. I was there. It was a good game. I know you were. It was fun. So let's move on to that game. Well, let's talk about it. I would take Houston because I think Baltimore just has the weapons. This will be, I think I wrote it down, like 14 to 20. Yeah, I think Gray Rice is just going to break this one open. All right. But Foster won't. No, it's that home, they are so tough in Baltimore. Yeah, oh this, I, they would be, I would not want to be a Houston fan, that's what I did. No, they're gonna be, they are tough, boy. Oh forget it, they are really tough. Alright, and then I think probably the, the game I'm most excited about for the game, and... Jake: This is the cream of the crop game. Justin: This is the cream of the crop game, but I must say...
00 Justin: I don't think it's gonna be close. Really? So Green Bay is favored by 7 and a half. They've been off for the week. Here's the thought with the Giants. They were close before. The game was very close. Yeah, I know. Right? It was down to the last 40 seconds. I think the Giants can hang with most teams because they have that big playability. Right? They have what Green Bay has, which is a big playability. They have a better defense than Green Bay does. I don't think they're gonna travel as well as they play at home. I just don't feel like I feel like going to Green Bay or going into the Lions den. But I could totally, totally see if you're talking about my hedging bets. I could totally see the Giants going in and beating them in in Green Bay. It's gonna take them an incredible game like four quarters of really good game. But here's the thing I think Green Bay is that might be a problem. That off week man, that off week you look back over the history. It's not been helpful the teams I could see them coming out confident that New England's gonna crush Denver. No, I picked Denver So not to win. Where are a pick in here? Giants, I think I'm gonna close. I'd seven and a half is too much. I thought I will at Green Bay This is one of those games that I feel like Like it's, it's, it's either gonna be close and the Giants win, or it's gonna be a complete shit show blowout, right? And Green Day's gonna win. Like, you'll be able to tell early in the first quarter, okay, which way this game's gonna go, and are the Giants gonna be able to, on the defensive side of the ball, slow... So Roger's now and then when they get the ball, I mean, this is how they won in the Super Bowl that year Just slow the game down draw it out Run the ball, you know make big plays and I just I won't be surprised if the Giants win. Let's put it that way. I just don't see it happening. Alright, so you're going to the Green Bay? Yeah, I like Green Bay. All right. Well, let's end it up this year. They're just really good people are like Forgetting how good they know they're very good But they have a crap defense and people can score on them So this could be back one of those and again even the games we watch that we thought was gonna go one way I just could see a very fired up very hot right now so hot right now giant but that's not when the giants win but the giants win when they're not supposed to win but they're not supposed to win now i know but they're like too confident no they're going to green bay this is the they went to green bay three years ago and won they're too confident they went to green bay two years ago and won they put far out of misery it was in 2007 2007 feels like three years ago arin rogers is better right now than Brent Fireblood at that point. Probably true. I mean, this guy's like a surgeon. Yeah. He can always kill a surgeon. Alright, so let's end up.
