09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Get away from me! Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, longest running New York jet podcast. My name is Jake and joining me 141th time. I know. That's my buddy Justin. Justin, how you doing? I'm good. It's been a while. 141th. 141th. Is that a... No. No, it's not. We have an agenda today, we're going to do a real good thing. We think the craziness has started, so we're going to talk about probably a little bit of the Peyton Manning watch, the Chads, and then we'll talk about some free agents that are out there and or some franchise tags around the league. Should we touch on the bounty hunters? Ah, the bounty hunters. Sure, let's kick it off. I feel like I have a unique take on the bounty. Do it. We haven't talked about it. No, yeah. You and I. At all. Oh. Have we not? Now you're offline? No, I was just listening to you and someone else talk about it. Okay, go. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. So the way that it's happened in, so everybody's aware, but so the way that's happened in a systematic thing, meaning that coaches and whatever are playing players to hurt and or take people out of the game, you don't have a problem with it. No. I feel like it would happen whether they're paying them or not. I feel like it's their job to do that. Like if I was a defensive lineman, right? Or a linebacker, an outside linebacker, I would feel like it's my job to hit that quarterback so hard that he can't finish this game. Yeah, that's fine. And that's what they're paying me to do anyway. You're right, but there's a difference. What's the difference? The difference is what you're saying as something they're paying me to play, and they're not. They're paying you for three hours a week to do one thing. They're also paying you for another seven days a week to do something else, to train and to study and whatever. So let's get that out of the way. They're paying you for 17 or 16 games plus, but they're also paying you for all the other stuff that you do. Oh yeah. No one's saying it. Studying and working out. No one's saying that they're not. Okay. First of all It's against the rules that the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to. So right there, that's why it's the problem. I guess. It's their own rules. So it's against the rules. Yeah, that they created. But I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Just because it's against the rules doesn't mean that I have to think that it's not,
04 Jake: that it's right. Well, here's the here's it we can feel softly we can say well, that's the thing philosophically I don't think that there's really anything all that wrong with it What I feel like is actually the more fucked up part. I love being able to curse on here is as a broadcaster the the fact that There is a tattletale somewhere in this whole situation Like how did this come out and get overblown and like I feel like this is the kind of thing That pisses me off about what happened at the end of the season with the Jets just to bring this full circle Oh, wow, okay, because the shit that happens in the locker room That people can either misconstrue or take the wrong way or get in trouble for right needs to stay in the fucking locker room So if I'm a Saints fan, which I'm not, that's what I'd be more upset about. I'd be more upset that there's somebody in my organization that feels like it's okay to talk about this outside of this organization. And I feel like there's probably other teams that have done it. I'm sure there are teams that have done it in the past. Yes. And I'm sure that there's still going to be people that are going to do it. But there is a big difference between saying, I hope you go out and put your stamp on that guy or teach him a lesson or whatever, then taking a... Because as we know, when you pay for something, it changes. When you pay for a woman to have sex with you, it goes from, oh, I convinced a woman to have sex with me, which is great, to she's a fucking whore and it's prostitution. There's a huge line in the world when you pay for something. When someone gives you food, it's charity. When you pay for it, it's buying. When you work for somebody and then you get paid for it, it's called the job. The monetary piece between A and B, and they are being paid, but they're being paid for an overall job, I think is what makes it a little bit different. Then there's a couple of aspects. One is... At the end of it, they did an amazing job of investigating this thing for over a year and not having anything leak out about it. That's incredible. That's just incredible. I can't believe they did that. In an age where everybody's Twitter asks every minute, how could they investigate this for over a year, have 57,000 pages of a document, pages of whatever, and then not have anybody know about it until just now when they came out of it. Two, what happened is they found out the Saints were doing it and told them to knock it off. And that's where I think I go from, yeah it's a bad thing to, wait a second. They told them to knock it off and they didn't. They continued to do it anyway. And that's my biggest problem. Yeah I know people do shit and hey listen some people film shit to their advantage and they get told to knock it off. If the, and here's where I made the analogy, you're probably listening, if the Patriots were to be found again doing, you know, recording people and making it for recording practices
07 Jake: and using it as part of a game template after they'd been told once to stop. I would hope to hell that the NFL would come down with the wrath of God and give them something so severe that it would stop. That's the only way you stop behavior. If you have a child or a cat, you know that you don't, you know, you warn, warn, warn and then you come down hard. Whether that's a timeout or you lose whatever you get. I just feel that that's the worst part of this is that they were told not to and they still did it like fuck you NFL. And I think that's why this is going to be brutal, what they do to them. And I think it's all afforded. It's not the action, it's sort of the defiance of the action. They defied what they were supposed to be doing, even after being warned, and they still did it anyway. And yeah, I know people were supposed to hurt people, but there's also... The other argument is, listen... You're not really supposed to hurt someone you're supposed to stop them and If you pay someone to actually try to hurt somebody or to go over that level Then that split second of the whistle where the guy might pull up a little bit He doesn't and he goes through and that's how you lose quarterbacks. That's how you get people blown out knees I don't know. I don't want to see I don't want to watch a game where it's gladiator where you start off with these people on your team And then by the end you like have half the guys and like the other half are like taking off of stretchers I don't think that's fun. It's not fun to watch on either side of the game Unless there's some players who I hate but you know I'm saying like if every season was like you have a hundred players to start And by the end if you can feel the team you get to go to the Super Bowl Because you still have enough players to put on your team I don't want that because then why don't we just bring in knives and have studded armor like if you really want to make It about hurting people there's ways of doing it. I just want I My biggest thing is that the Saints were told not to do it. They were told you are doing it, stop doing it, and they didn't. And I think that's why they're going to come down with a rat. And other than that, I don't have a huge issue with the paying whatever. It's a little bit, you know, it's questionable. But they also just redid the CBA. They spent 10 years and they spent a whole off season. They went over every document. And in that, everybody agreed we are not going to do this behavior. And then one person does it. It's like, oh, well, fuck you then. Thanks, dude, for we all agreed not to do this. So why are you doing it? And that's why I think they should be penalized heavily. I don't know what that means. We'll figure out what that means when the NFL does it. All right, let's talk about some Jets news. Okay. Thank you. Uh, what do you want? Do you want to talk about frequency? Do you want to talk about- Jets news! Jets news? There's jets! There's some jets news. This is a jet podcast. It is. As long as you're running your jets podcast. Sure is. Uh, let's talk about some Chad-isms. Chads? We have two things. Hanging chads? There's some two chads coming up. One is that Sanchez and- Pennington, Chad Pennington, net and we're going over, I guess the dolphin, what's the dolphin? It can't be the dolphin's playbook because it doesn't work for dolphins. It's the dolphin's playbook from when Chad Pennington was on the dolphin.
00 Jake: But why does he still have it? Why wouldn't he have it? Because he's not selling the dolphin because I take it back from you the minute you leave. Yeah. I think they're going over theories. I'm sure you can have it if you want to have it. All right, whatever. Like you might have to hand it back to him, but you still have copies pieces of paper Reviewing the right have you never made a copy of a piece of paper? But those things are supposed to be not copied. I mean that's the whole point anyway, if you can If you're a professional quarterback who's made millions of dollars you can copy some fucking paper fine So thoughts chad and i love it. I think chad pennington to me I always thought he could have been a coach, if not a quarterback coach, even an offensive coordinator at some point in his life, if he wanted to. Son of a coach played smarter than he had physical talent. I don't know if I said that correctly, but we've said it before. Remember we've been around since 2007. Yeah, I mean he was a smarter player than he was a talented player. And he had some decent physical attributes, but by all means he did not have the strongest arm in the world. It was adequate, if not less than adequate. He wasn't fast. He couldn't move. He was tall, but not really tall. He wasn't the beacon of physical... ability but he had a really good brain and he said he knew the offense really well. I think I've said it many many times he runs smart complicated schemes really well like I thought that Shoddy's first year in New York was his best year because they did all sorts of fun stuff on that offense and Pennington ran it. It went hurry up sometimes. They'd run trick plays all the time. He'd call things at the line. They'd motion people from all over the place, everywhere. They'd line up, then they'd line up again. And it was like just constant movement and flow offense. And they did the same thing in Miami with the Wildcat and the movement and the trickery and the canary. They went and they went. So he gets complex offensive schemes. And I have always felt like he, if he wanted to, could be a coach in the league. And I don't think there's any harm in Sanchez working with Chad Pennington. I mean, if anyone knows Verano, it's Pennington. And... He has linkages to the Jets now through both Sperano and the fact that he was a former player for years. I think it's a good thing. I think a guy like that is more useful to me than Mark Brunel. To me, Chad knows this offense and is more likely a better candidate to be...
02 Jake: Down the line some sort of coach in the league whether it's for the Jets or not who knows But I'm sure he could coach in the league and he could coach offense. So And he knows what it's like to be the quarterback in New York, he knows what it's like to have some success I mean, I remember when they made that run and they made the playoffs and there was the next Montana question mark, right? Pennington No, but like he knows what it's like to be up. He knows what it's like to be kicked to the curb He's experienced it So I think it's great that he's getting some time to talk to Sanchez and as you pointed out This was really comes about because under the new CBA rules which are much tighter They're basically meant to be, again, rules that apparently everybody can just disregard. But they're meant to be like allow players time or force players time to not play, to stay away from the team so that there's a separation of work and life balance, whatever. So one of them is that during this period, I guess, they cannot be in doing stuff with the team. So, let's see what we can do. Therefore our new offensive coach can't talk to our four-year quarterback Sanchez and Sperrano can't talk to each other about football Probably can't even just I wonder they get to be like sure they can talk insanity. Yeah, what do you think? But they can't talk to each other. So you have Pennington talking to Yeah, it waited for me for two years. And I just, the only thing I worry about is like, I don't think Chad left New York with the greatest taste in his mouth. We only dumped him, basically kicked him out the door for the new shiny toy or the old shiny toy. Yeah. True. All right. So that's one of the pieces of news we would have one. Sure. There's another. Yeah. The other chat is that they're talking about bringing in Chad Henny as as the backup for Sanchez. Sounds good to me. Yeah, I mean, clearly what the news has been saying, and again, we're not in the locker rooms, I don't really know, but the news has been saying, and a lot of the players, including LT, were saying, hey listen, you know what? He doesn't have enough, Sanchez doesn't have enough sort of, he's still young, he still needs someone behind him kind of kicking his ass. And that can be a coach. out. Thanks for watching. But it'd also be nice if there was some young, not some young, but some guy who actually had a chance to win that job. Burnell wasn't going to win the job unless Sanchez went down. Like, Sanchez down, incomes Burnell. But with like someone who has, you know, I guess the question is if there's a three pick in the first half Sanchez game, and you go, you know what, it's time for you to take a seat. Time for you to take, not for the rest of your life, not forever, not even for the next game. But just right now you're off your game. We only have a three hour, we only have three hours or you know 60 minutes and three hours to play this game. So I think it's time that you sit down and let's put in someone else who could actually probably win this game for us. Maybe, like we're not down by a ton right? At this point I don't think they're ever gonna do that because I think he's kind of grown enough.
01 Jake: Um but you know it would have been nice maybe if they had a chance like they talked about Jason Campbell. They talk about Chad, Chad Henney. These guys who have experience, who could play that role of guy. I wouldn't do Jason Campbell. I think he's too good. Too good? Yeah. Too many people calling for his name. Yeah. Put in Campbell. No one's gonna be yelling in the crowd. Put in Henney. You know he's not that good. Well, there you go. But he, no, he's not. It's like... It's like people like put him browning Nagel, but no but that's browning fucking Nagel That's the thing you need to have someone who's good enough that it's not that's why I'm pushing him Jason Campbell No, yeah, he's pretty decent. He's not bad Just never had a really good chance anywhere. Yeah, you keep saying that So anyway, any fine two other pieces of news We got the Manning debacle or the Manning craziness and we got a debacle franchise players. I don't care about the franchise players. Well there's some big names out there. Well Wes Walker is a big name. Mike Nugent great. A lot of kickers got franchised. Yeah I think I guess the new rules are a little bit different and so they were Teams were using other ways. Jibri's got true. This is huge. That's a big one Don't you feel like the Saints owe him like not to franchise him? I they just couldn't go up Steve Weatherford good friend good friend of podcast Steve weather for a great guy West Walker Dwayne Bowe Robert Mathis anyway a bunch of people All right, let's talk about Peyton. Let's talk about Peyton. So unless you've been living under a rock for the last I don't know, six months or maybe a year. Peyton Manning got hurt and had surgery and didn't play last year and the Colts yesterday and out today this morning or last year? Yesterday. They announced yesterday but it came official today. They did a press conference yesterday. Okay yesterday. Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts have separated ways. Peyton Manning is a unrestricted free agent. Totally out there. He can sign with anybody he wants. His choice. And there's no, it's literally he goes in net new, right? There's no contract or anything. It's all been ripped up. Okay, so then it becomes the list of places he can possibly go and the reason I think we would discuss it, even if we weren't anywhere near this, it would be a cool discussion. But clearly... There is a contingent of people and the Jets are one of the teams that is being thrown out there as a possible place for Peyton Manning one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game top five six ever. Yep, right. I've heard 16 Okay, listen, listen to the Jets. I know where he's going. So you know where he's going. Alright, so there's the Jets Yep, there's the Cardinals. Yep. There's the Dolphins. Yep, there's Seattle Oh really? That's Denver. Denver I've heard. There's San Francisco. Redskins. And the Redskins. So there's seven. Yeah I didn't hear Seattle. San Francisco that seems like really? You just got to the...
04 Jake: Really? If they had Peyton Manning they could win a couple Super Bowls with that defense. Yeah that's true. Um all right so thoughts. So first of all let's do the... So here's here's my thoughts. Let's go. Do you want him on the Jads next year? I know you said we've had this discussion before. I keep begrudgingly saying no. I will tell you what you've said before, which is, if you could guarantee me he was exactly the same as he was two years ago, had all the talents and whatever, and there's no leftover and he could start day one from pre-season game one and be 100% going forward, I would say yes. I maintain that. Okay. I begrudgingly say no. Okay. Bye. Well, then what do you not believe about that to be true? Well, he's not the same. Well, yeah I'm sorry. I've made that statement it has come out that he had an additional surgery. That's true. I've been for neck surgeries Okay, there's no way that a human being is the same as when they before they've had four neck surgeries and after they've had four neck surgeries. You're by definition not the same. You have had your neck operated on. Surgery. Four times. Okay, that's one. Two, I think it's completely short-sighted to... give up on one of the in the history of the NFL one of the most successful third-year quarterbacks ever one of five quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to win more than 30 games in his first three years Won four Road playoff games made the AFC championship two out of his three seasons by all accounts He is a successful quarterback. You could say the defense did that you could say the running game did that you could say whatever you want But it happened Okay, and to be that short-sighted to give up on a top five NFL Draft pick This kid wasn't a six-round pick and even come out of nowhere He was in the top five in the first round So you obviously thought something of him as you drafted him as he traded up and as you traded up for him And he's proved his worth It's very short-sighted secondly, I think back in recent history and Even over the course of the NFL history and I think about these all-time greats that leave their team that they played their entire career with to go play somewhere else at the end of their career when they either have something left or don't. Throw some names out there. They never win. Throw some names out there. Well, we could throw Unitis and Namis out there. Right. They didn't win wherever they went. Joe Montana. Right left the Niners of went to Kansas City didn't win there Brett farve left Green Bay didn't win wherever he went Right close. I mean, but sure as close as Sanchez has ever gotten on an NFC Championship So, I mean these are like, you know particularly really, Montana and F.A.R.V.E. in recent memory, where these are guys who spent a legacy in
06 Jake: one place, 13, 14 years. One Super Bowls, one MVPs were considered the top five ever. That's why you keep out someone like Kurt Warner because he wasn't that. I couldn't even throw Kurt Warner in there. Yeah, but he wasn't really. One of Super Bowls. He wasn't that guy. No, he's a Hall of Famer. But he came, by the way, but he wasn't the guy who spent the 10 years in one place. Right. He was CFL or whatever. But still, but still never won in the next place. Right. Didn't win with the Giants. and right? Didn't win with Arizona. He got there, he got to the Super Bowl, he didn't win it. So like this has never happened. This doesn't happen. Guys do their thing at their team, they leave for the last two or three years of their career and they don't win. It doesn't happen. It's a fallacy. Well, but wait a second. You can't tell me that Manning's better than Montana cuz he's not Well, first of all, I'm not gonna say he's not better. I'm not gonna do that in it I'm not getting that debate. We don't have enough time. What I'm gonna say is You can't win the Super Bowl. No But be successful you can say there have been so if you wait wait You look at cuz I think even Montana got back to back to work. I off made the playoffs. Okay, that's great But wait, boy wait That is something. I'm not making the argument, but I'm saying that if you have far from far from the NFC Championship, Montana got to the playoffs, Kurt Warner went to the Super Bowl. Out of your four examples, two got within one, one got there, so it's not like that's not a successful model, it's just they haven't won it. But these guys went to teams that didn't do that. in the previous three years. So when Favre went to the Jets and didn't make the playoffs, the Jets weren't that great of a team. I mean, we made the playoffs here, there, whatever. I mean, we've been okay since Parcells was around. When he went to Minnesota, Minnesota was terrible. When, right, Montana went to the Chiefs, the Chiefs were no great shakes, right? So you're making a no I'm not the Jets are not that team the Jets with their current quarterback situation Two of the last three years. Oh, you're saying just as far as any of those guys made it for one fine But still it's not like oh man. We haven't been in the AFC Championship game in years We were there the two of the last three years, but let's just do it, but Peyton Manning Out of everybody you could say he's close to, I would think he's above Montana in his whatever, but everybody else is better. Everybody else we listed. Farve. Yeah. Everybody else. I'm pretty much out of Farve, but they're close. But he's one of the top four quarterbacks ever to play the game. Coming off of the season where he couldn't play because he had four nexters. Well rusted. four neck surgeries. It's a lot. It's a lot.
01 Jake: Five's the limit though. Two should be the limit. I mean, it's a lot. It's a lot. Like I said, if you could absolutely promise me and look ahead in your crystal ball, you don't have to tell me they're gonna win a Super Bowl. You don't have to tell me they're gonna win, get to the playoffs. of. All you gotta tell me is he is what he was two years ago. And he's not... there's no ill effects. He can take a hit, right? He can... he can play with uninhibited and play as he can play. And you can promise me that for three years. Even for two years. I'd say alright, let's take the gamble So you're gonna get two three years more and one of those fears. You're just hoping you make it and win Super Bowl That's right. But again, remember he's only won one Super Bowl He's only been to two. It's not like he was like Montana who went four for four I agree. I mean, you said with your opinion, I'm on the same thing. I'm actually kind of, I think, when I'm upset, I know Tanning Bong has a thing where he always says, we're in everything. He says, we'll explore every opportunity. And that's interesting. And I like that. I like that he's always wheeling and dealing, right? He's a gambler. He's a whatever. And he takes some chances, sometimes they work out, and sometimes they don't. But what I think, I think you have to be careful about with the New York media and with the New York fan base and with coming off in 8 and 8 season and coming off again with a quarterback who, you know, again a lot of people want to put down but stats are proving that it's pretty good and we have a long way to go before we know and we think it's on an upward slot, upward thing here. If we really make too much into this, I think it disrupts. I think it does more harm than good. not even getting him, but getting into the... Here's the thing, I don't wanna be one of the last two teams self-talking to him. One of seven? Fine. But let's get out of the race pretty quick. Because I wanna be like, I don't wanna be down with Nnamdi, right? Where it's us and Eagles back and forth. And I don't wanna be there, because I think that could really hurt our team and hurt what we're trying to do. Thanks for watching! And really what does it say when you're left with that guy who you've just said is, you know, then what? I think if you really try to go for a patent, then you basically have to sit Sanchez and go get someone else. You have to cut him. Right. Well, no, not even you do get him. I'm saying if you don't. If you're one of the last two, the other thing is those teams that are going for him, they don't really have anybody. They don't have first rounders. they have like They have just guys. They have a guy in Washington. They have nobody in... And they have Teemo in Denver. Miami. I don't think Denver's in it. Arizona, they got Retread Cobb. I mean, it's not like they have the guy. We have the guy. But so you're basically saying you're throwing out a lot of money and a lot of whatever. I just wish we just get out of it quickly. I think it's interesting, but I kind of wish him to go listen. We made our analysis, but we're with Sanchez Let's just put this on the table. He's not coming to New York. All right. He doesn't want to be
02 Jake: Next to his brother like that. He's not that kind of guy He's not gonna want to play in the town with Eli where every single week during the football season They're gonna just be compared to each other every week Eli threw three touchdowns Peyton only threw one Eli's better like he's not gonna want to do that cuz that's all it's gonna be he's not coming here get over it it's not happening where's he going make your prediction I've told him I'm gonna tell my first you have to say I can say Miami don't know I'm saying please he's going Arizona here's my reasons A, a recent successful quarterback did that and was successful. Maybe not Super Bowl. B, if you go to Arizona, there is no questioning, right? There's nothing. They'll take Cobb and throw him out. C, dome. I'm sorry. The kids played in the dome the whole time. That is a huge thing. D. Division go to Redskins great. You got Eagles Giants whatever I twice a year go to Miami you got Jets Dolphins, you know, or you get debts Patriots Go to Arizona. It's a dome the pressures off You'll get paid tons and tons of money and you'll be able to wipe up in the in that division Yeah, and he gets this I got the greatest quarter of a world. I don't know if he's gonna be able to wipe up I mean San Francisco pretty good but I happen to agree with you. You didn't go that way to go. I didn't but now I do. I thought about it. It's a factor of having Larry Fitzgerald, having an established coach who's won. Right. They made the Super Bowl. I mean he's not going to a rookie head coach somewhere else or whatever. and the dome factor really does play into it. That's nine games a year guaranteed a dome. And what do you have? You got eight teams there. Well that's what I'm saying nine. You got eight in Arizona, you got one in St. Louis. That's nine games a year guaranteed in a dome. And that was what he was in before, right? Cold So they had theirs and they played in Houston. So same thing. So I had the nine. So I think that's the place I would throw a long shot out there for San Francisco. Oh, I don't. I just would. Because I think if he were to say, I want to win another Super Bowl, that's the place he can win immediately. He goes to there. And how close were they with with Alex Smith, who by all accounts isn't the greatest. He's not the worst. He's a good. He's an okay quarterback before the season we would have said he shit. He's fine Yeah, but really they made the NFC Championship game with Alex Smith and with that defense the way They're gonna be for the next couple years They would they would have beaten anybody I am hoping for what are you hoping for? What do you want to see him? I want him in the NFC I don't care just anywhere away from anywhere in the NFC. Have fun NFC. I
00 Jake: Don't want him with the Dolphins Mean that's a nightmare Brady twice a year and Manning twice a year. That's a nightmare. Although kind of fun Get out of here. What we had him as a like a rookie We were still in our division. Yeah, like get out of here. Go away Reggie Wayne was like I want to go to Miami with Peyton He's from Miami.
