09 Jake: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Can't wait! Justin: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom! Podcasts longest-running New York Jets podcast period Jake joining me. Sorry. I was positive for a second cuz I had a beer in my hand. This is Jake and joining me off for the 144th time The good buddy Justin Justin. How you doing? I'm good. I feel like 144 is a good number. It's a good number Jake: I don't know why it's just like that's a good number. That's like we've been around 144 Justin: We're close to 150. Your math is correct sir. We are close to 150. We are closer now than we were last time. We're trying time 150 so that it's something special. No. Should 150 Jake: be like the week before the first preseason game or something? We'll be well over 150 by then. Justin: Really? We're just gonna keep podcasting every week? Well not every week but there seems to be news every week. Yeah, there is. There is. Sad voice. Speaking of sad voice, frowny face. Let me, well we got some news this week. We'll just get right into it. Okay. We got an agenda, it's all Jets news so far. I like this first one. Yeah, so I wanted to do a little celebration. Should we cheers? Yeah, let's cheers right here on the mic. Sorry if you're listening to that very loudly. Jet Kingdom, the website before the podcast, so there was a website before the podcast. For all you don't know, a little history. Yeah, why don't you give the history because I think it's interesting. Okay, so I've been Jet Fan for a while. I think I had a date somewhere back, but anyway. And I've always been a web guy, built websites, whatever. When the new stadium, the West Side Stadium was announced. Next. I was like, that's it. I'm gonna build my own website about the Westside Jets. And I registered WestsideJets.com. I thought it was Westside Stadium. Nope, it was Westside Jets. Westside Jets. Westside Jets. Oh, okay. And I was gonna, it was all about the stadium and I was gonna follow the production of it, the build of it, because it's on the Westside. I live in New York. I could easily go take pictures. I was gonna build this whole thing up. And I followed it for a while. I built a website, I had it, and I put up news and whatever. And then as it kind of got slower and slower, then it went to Queen Stadium or whatever. You know, they were gonna, and then they, it got canceled, and then it went to whatever. And so I said, you know what? I'm just, I'm not gonna go for a stadium thing. I said, I'll do a kingdom thing. So I went for, so I re-chained it, re-branded it Jet Kingdom, and basically, it's been Jet Kingdom ever since, but it started off as West Side Jets.
01 Justin: sets. But I launched it days after they announced the first so it was in 2004 when they announced the The that they were gonna go build the stadium. So I think it was literally in March of 2004 They said that you know, they did that whole announcement with Bloomberg and all that. Wow, and that was in March Jake: They do they work so fast Justin: In 2004 they announced the stadium and they built it in like seven years. Well but that was the third stadium. Remember that was the first stadium they were going to build. Then they got canned after two years. Yeah they did a good job. Then there was the Queens one was like for two months they were going to build one out in Willard Park or Willard Point. Yeah by City Fields. And then the third one was the... They're coming together for the Jets, you know, the MetLife. The MetLife Stadium. Jake: I would have loved if they would have done the City Field one. I think that would have been the best place. Now the west side to me would have been cool because I've been to some stadiums that are like in cities and they're cool. It does hurt the tailgate aspect of going to a game and that is one of our favorite Parts of going to the game not only sometimes you get the only part of the game That's in times not only do you get to go to the game and watch the game live for three hours? But for three to four hours before the game sometimes longer. Yeah, you just hang out and it's fun and you eat Justin: And he'll food and it's on the west side that would have been lost they talked about I mean on the west side There was all sorts of plans. I mean it was it's very cool I mean I remember what I was saying they should they should a barge Yeah, they should just bring a barge in next to the stadium and just do it on a bar We're gonna do a lot of stuff again It would have been more like the Yankees where there's like every bar becomes its own yeah gate I will say tailgating if you haven't been if you're just been having a game you got to go to game find a tailgate There are Like our good friends Tailgate Joe. You could tweet us. Oh yeah. We could come to our tailgate. That's true. You could come to our... But this Tailgate Joe, he runs a professional one. We could show up, give you 25 bucks. We're not professionals. No. But we will welcome you. Jake: Just bring food. You know, there are more than like... You know there's more than two listeners on this podcast. Well, so what? We'll just blow up. Lot D. Do it. We're not in Lot D. Oh, you are in Lot D. Justin: Oh yeah. We'll blow it up. It'll be great. Thanks for watching! So anyway, Jet King turned eight years old. Happy birthday. And yeah, the podcast is, we started in July of 2007. Yeah. So, we're gonna be five this year. Which is still crazy for the amount of podcasts. Jake: Podcasting five years back when we started doing it. I remember people being like, you do a what now? I think they still say that. Well, they kind of do, but now it's still, it's like, oh, okay, you do a podcast. But then it was like a what, who? Right. And it was like a podcast. It's like a radio show, but it's not live and people download it. Who the hell is downloading that? At first? Not too many people. We used to watch like one or two hits and be like, is that you?
02 Jake: Did you download it again? Yeah, oh that was me. I downloaded it on my machine and then on my somewhere else. Justin: We don't care if you listen to it, just download it. But now, yes, it's all grown up, this pod. Alright, so let's get to the meat of the content. Last podcast we produced, I think we were in the midst of Tebow craziness and that it hadn't been done yet. Jake: Is that so? That is correct. The last podcast was a week ago today. Yeah, and it was Justin: New York T-Bose? Ah question mark. Yeah, cuz we were in the midst of it. So since then guess what it happened It's official and all there was a press conference and everything and all of our dreams and and and nightmares have come true Simultaneously. Yep, which is as a player. We're getting a very dynamic and interesting player But let's talk about some of the some of the blowback Jake: The T-Bo blowback is a little... Can I just start by saying and this sucks cuz I do a podcast and I have to talk about These things. Okay, but I have said to many a person I'm not talking about this They say what do you think of T-Bo? I say I don't know They say, what do you mean you don't know? I say, I don't have an opinion. They say, what do you mean you don't have an opinion? What do you mean you don't have an opinion? This is just your way of not talking about it. Say, I don't have an opinion, I won't have an opinion until I see him play. And I don't mean pre-season. I mean, I need to know how they're gonna use them. Cause I don't know. Anything I say now is purely speculation. So basically being like every other fan on the planet. And every other broadcaster on the planet who's... Running their mouths about how Tebow will be starting by week four and they're gonna use them 20 to 25 plays And he's pushing for the job and that's why he came to New York and unnamed sources this and unnamed sources that no I Reserve the right to not have a concrete opinion on whether I think this is good or bad Or how they're gonna use them or anything until I see them actually use them Justin: All right, that wraps up this podcast. Thanks very much. Thank you for listening. And go Jets! Jake: Well now you have to... Well that's why I said this sucks because I do this podcast where I have to Justin: actually give my opinions. Well you don't really have to, no one cares. Pretty much listening to opinion but let's talk about Some of the things that have happened since. Sure. Because it was really happening at the time we recorded it. There was a chance. Jake: We were stumbling over ourselves because we were just refreshing our Twitter feeds. Every three words were like, did it happen? Did it happen? Let me go to Twitter. Did it happen? Justin: So here's what really happened in the last week and a half, or last week. Yeah, why don't you give a big recap. We signed. end. Tim Tebow we traded trade trade trade. What did we trade? We traded a fourth and a seventh and got back a six or fourth and a six and got back a fourth and sixth got back a Jake: Seventh gave them 2.5 million dollars goes against the cap split the difference 2.5 against the cap
03 Justin: then Drew Stanton Through shit fish you think which I guess is kind of okay Not really. Well, it's okay because what we thought he was gonna be like, oh he's in this he's in this mix mode He's the Brad Smith. Nah Jets came out Rex came out ten of all came out and said no, he's our backup He's our backup quarterback. So then Stan's like hey, get me the fuck out of here. Okay, fine Jake: Stan we actually did right by we traded him away. We did right by him. We got a seventh round pick for me We basically got back. How do we get we got a sixth? We got back the pick that we gave up like that sixth round pay. It's crazy We also gave him five hundred thousand dollars for being on our roster for one week That goes against our cap as well. Yeah, you know kind of sucks pittance. That was dumb. No pittance. It's a pittance It's not a pittance. It's when it comes down to having to cut that last player. And it's like, we got this guy who's a little bit better, but he makes like, I don't know, 1.1 million dollars. And then there's this guy who makes like 400,000. We got to cut the better guy. I don't know who that is right now. Don't know if it'll happen. But you saw hard knocks at the end. It was like, oh, shit, we can't cut. We can't cut Richardson. We gotta cut Lavergne's coals. Well maybe we'll sign him back, but for now we gotta cut him. And Calvin Clemens, we gotta cut him too. That wasn't a cap mummy. That wasn't a cap mummy. Oh no, that was a cap thing. Justin: No, it wasn't a cap. That was a cap thing. You did not want to keep it out of those pairs. Clemens, it was a cap. That was a roster number. Clemens, it was a cap thing. Clemens? Jake: They were like, we're either gonna cut you, or you're gonna take a major price reduction. Justin: Here's what they said to him. Dude, you suck. You're never gonna hit the fucking field. You're not, we're not paying you millions of dollars to sit there and hold a clipboard. Jake: Get the fuck outta here. But those were, those, there were certainly cap considerations when they were deciding who to cut. Like they cut Lavergneous Coles who was making more than Rookie Receiver X. I don't know who it was at the time. Who made the roster? And it was like, oh, all right, that guy made the roster because he makes no money. And Cole has to make more than him because he's a veteran, right? Like, they're, that $500,000 better not come back to haunt us with roster spot number 53. Justin: Well, basically, we spent $2.5 million, oh, sorry, $3 million this year for a back— Guess what? David Garard signed with the... the dalit, sorry dalit, the fucking dolphins for three million dollars. Did he really? Yeah, three million dollars against their cap. That sucks. So really, okay, would you rather take, if you said straight up, same money for your backup, Tim Tebow or David Garrod? Jake: Is it Tim Tebow? the football player without Tim Tebow, the name Tim Tebow? Yeah. Or is it Tim Tebow? The Tim Tebow who now has a billboard? I'm not going to talk to you about that until the season starts.
00 Jake: Honestly, David Garard's a better quarterback. Tim Tebow's a better football player. Alright. Alright, so let's talk about... You can't even deny that. It's hard to even deny that like I think a reward is is but Tim Tebow could only run the Tim Tebow offense David Garard's a quarterback You'd you run you design your offense, but David Garret is a you design you design your offense and David Garard is a quarterback who can run it now we design our offense Tim Chibo is really our backup Can he really run the offense that we're gonna really like because now we have these two offenses in my mind we have the base Mark Sanchez offense that's run by a real quarterback Who drops back and throws the ball down the field? And then we have the wildcat Tim Tebow package, right? That's part of the offense. But if Sanchez gets hurt, I'm not even going down the route of benching him. I'm not going there. But if Sanchez gets hurt in week four. Tim Tebow can't run the base offense. He couldn't in Denver. They had to redo the whole thing. You saw it. I mean we saw them beat the Jets. He was awful against the Jets. He won at the end by running. But like Eric Smith nice guy. He was awful. He completed like eight passes in that game. That's not like that. He's not a backup quarterback. He's He's more Brad Smith. He's more football player. He's fucking Tim Tebow, man. It's so weird, like, cause if Sanchez got hurt, I actually wouldn't be happy with Tim Tebow playing the whole game. Justin: Stop for a second with your, I don't have an opinion, but now I have too much of an opinion. I'm not so far on that one because I think here's what you do when Sanchez if Sanchez gets hurt is You just take the Tim Tebow package which he's we're talking 10 to 20 snaps a game and you just expand it It doesn't work that way. We saw it in Denver. It didn't work I don't think it could work for the season. You're right, but I think it could work for Got a game or two a game or two certainly, but that's what a backup Should be doing that's like playing ten games the back of point ten games. You're you're done. You know who I equate him to Ray Lucas He's Ray Lucas with a bigger following Do you remember Ray Lucas playing as a quarterback? I was there when he got put in then when testa Verde went down he he That's kind of what he's like. No, he didn't play in that game, but whatever he did They actually put him in and then they put Tupa in I know but anyway, he would touch down doesn't matter I was like this guy can throw a touchdown doesn't matter Jake: That's kind of what I equate him to now. Here's here's a question. I have for you question about T-Boe go on
04 Jake: I won't mind if like one game the TiVo package starts. Okay. And quote-unquote Sanchez didn't quote-unquote start this game. I won't care. Okay. Like that that to me actually makes good... strategic sense. Start the game in the TiVo package. They don't expect it. We're gonna start it in the TiVo package. The first three or four plays. The first sequence. The first drive? No, the first series. The first three plays is the TiVo package and then Sanchez Justin: rolls in off those. Well, but the TiVo package, I think, this is what people are not getting. The TiVo packages are gonna include Sanchez. Sanchez is gonna be Jake: part of the TiVo package. That's what makes this power. What I mean is... T-Bo will quote-unquote start. I don't think that'll ever happen because I think it will you can't do that because there's so many Justin: Bonuses and things about game starting and that yeah, I don't think you can do that But he'll be on the field on the first play. I agree Jake: He could be which means he's starting no, but Sanchez will be there right next to us Doesn't matter if T-Bo's on the field for the first play. He started the game. Okay, great What I will care about is if he finishes the game. Here's the scenario. The offense is running great. It's Sanchez doing his thing. They've done 5-10 plays of the TiVo package during the game, but it's been Sanchez's game. They're winning the game 27-24. Defense gives up a touchdown. down. It's now 31-27. Jets need a touchdown to win. There's two and a half minutes left. They kicked the ball off to us. Justin: I will be so upset. They never would do that. Why would they put in the Tebow package at that point? The two-minute drill package? Did he not win a shit ton of games last year in the fourth quarter? He did it to us. Wait, the Tebow package works the best in the two-minute drill. No, because you know what? Tebow's never been 31-24. or 31 27 you know why no it's no one ever scored 24 points okay what if it's Jake: 11 7 or deep shit 11 7 well that's what I mean it's a four point game it doesn't Justin: matter what the score is I still think Sanchez is the guy who you say I better Jake: be cuz Tebow time! Oh fuck. Is in the last five minutes of the game, no? He goes 0 for 20. And then he throws for 300 yards in three minutes. Right? Am I wrong? That's when he was the starter. I will be fucking rip shit if that's what ends up happening. I don't care who starts. I care who finishes. Okay, I don't care if Tebow starts the game they started in the Tebow package whoo Care who finishes and if they're down I want Sanchez on the field Justin: Leading the comeback well, and this is why I think if you're gonna ask me right now. This is a smart move. I think
04 Justin: I have to say no. Jake: Because we're fucking talking about this. It's stupid. Justin: It's got the media in a frenzy. And we're the media. We're buying into it. And I said it last year, or I said it last podcast, or two podcasts ago, or whatever, I said, and you know, I made the analogy, or Ray Lucas made the analogy of saying, you know, after the Giants won in 2004, 2007, we, Good segue. Right. I'll go to Marcus Netters' question from Facebook. but But it says, am I wrong on being disgusted by the fact that the Giants won a Super Bowl in 08 and we get to far to mask the fact that we suck? Yeah, right, because we went and picked up far of that season, dropped, whatever. Now the Giants win again in T-Blow, he says, to mask the fact that we suck. I actually don't think that that's what's happening. It just feels like it's a coincidence. But here's my point. This has already started to just, he is such a, again, divisive figure. That is the exact word, it's the exact right word. No matter who you ask, I dare you to find anybody. Tweet me. If you're the guy who goes, eh, that's fine, whatever, it's okay. You know, he's a player. Nobody feels that way. People either feel like he's the son of God or... The most popular... player in the league. Or he kind of is. Or he's like the devil and I and I I I wish we could get the physical skill and a guy who is a winner. I mean even before you know before his his t-bow time in Broncos the guy played and won games. He's not like he's a Heisman award winner. He won national championship in college. We have two national we have two first round pick quarterback national championship winning well Sanchez didn't win anything in college. USC didn't he win the what bowl did he win? He might have been a backup when Matt Leinert won. Oh he won the... Jake: He might have won a bowl game but not he wasn't a national championship player he didn't win the national championship. I don't know if he won or lost or whatever in in his college career I didn't really follow him but No, I mean the guy by all accounts is a winner. It's gonna be interesting to see how he's used. I would love to I've already sort of said too many words. I'd love to reserve all my feelings about him until I see him play It's gonna be interesting to see even in preseason in the Rose Bowl Yeah, but the Rose Bowl is a huge game, but it's a VCS game, but it's not it might not have been the national championship Okay, I'm just saying he won the Rose Bowl. He played at USC played big-time college football for one year Yeah, Tebow did it for more than one. He won a national championship won the Heisman all that the the the the thing though is I'll be interested even in the preseason right because Tebow's the backup when they you know the starter generally plays not so
02 Jake: much in the preseason until game three when he plays the first half like what are they gonna that's what I'm gonna really start getting interested like Okay, when Tebow's in there with the second unit, are they running a real offense or are they running Tebow time offense? No, they have to be running. They have to be running a real offense. Justin: Yeah, because he's got to be the backup as well as Tebow time. He's got to be able to run the whole offense. Yep. But what happens is, this is the worst... Almost his job is even harder. Your worst nightmare is going to happen if he can actually run the real offense well. Right. Jake: Because then you have a big controversy. Justin: Well, then you have a controversy and you have, well, but maybe what people are asking, if you want to look at the light side, maybe people are asking for this guy, a guy behind Sanchez who is a threat to his job. And he is. Well, he's a threat in many ways. A, he can walk on water. Jake: He's totally a threat. People want him. He's a threat. People are saying he'll be starting by the end of the year. He's a threat Sanchez has his first bit of adversary and add Adversary here and I say adversary adversary adversary Adversary adversity. Thank you. Oh, I keep drinking now as a pro here and and he you know, hopefully he will rise above this he will He will feel the pressure, he will thrive on the pressure, he's thrived on pressure before, he's won on the road in the playoffs, he beat Peyton Manning on the road, he beat Tom Brady on the road, that's pressure. Hopefully this is that same kind of adversity and urgency that he needs to feel. All right. To play well on that stage. He's gonna be on the big stage. They're gonna be playing big primetime nights You know, they're gonna be on tons of primetime games. I mean, it's a given they're gonna play in primetime Time at least four times, you know it at least at least I wouldn't be surprised if they're playing on the Thanksgiving night I wouldn't be surprised if they're playing You know the Pats on one prime time night if they play You know the the Dolphins are the Bills on another one Justin: I see they're gonna play some serious prime time games season take it holders your in for at least two home Yeah, game definitely one Monday one Sunday I think you might even get a Thursday in there if you don't get definitely definitely definitely yeah if Tim Tebow is Jake: starting by the end of the year when that flex schedule comes around you're gonna get in that Thursday night is happening or they're gonna flex you in there and you know the NFL Network wants them a piece of TiVo so they're gonna be Justin: on Thursday night too yeah at late in the year so that's happening it's coming so as a Jets fan it's hard to say I mean if you took away all the other stuff it's nice I both and that was the last point I want to get to and then we'll wrap it up I have some questions that was well that was the one that was one. What's the other one from fake fake Rex Ryan? Jake: What he said he starts Ryan said how about a new segment called a good old-fashioned? Fuck you
00 Justin: Pick a media type who pisses you off that week a media type like a person or like a type of person I think he means a person go ahead pick somebody I'm gonna pick Jake: Chris Cartland. Chris Carton. Oh, Carton, why? I don't know if it's Carton or Cartland. Okay, well he's gonna be very funny. Chris continent Carton, as he was known when he was the producer of the Mike and the Mad Dog show and he's now on SNY Loudmouths with Adam Shine. By the way, he loves this deal. He's the fat one with the shaved head and seven chins. Yes. Justin: coming out of his button shirt yes um let me guess he was very pro very con this deal he hated this he hated it and could not Jake: he was calling he was calling the jets front office staff bold-faced liars he was calling uh he was saying no way sanchez starts eight games this year He said t-bow will be in before week eight starter. He says this is the worst thing they could have done And I give a big fuck you to Justin: Chris continent cart. I'm trying to give anybody I actually give a fuck you to actually, you know I'll give it to mark sheriff sheriff sheriff. We're having a tough time. Yeah, I saw his segment. I I basically He's a Broncos guy. I know, but the thing I don't really like is when they do... I like when they do both sides. And I get on some of the S&Y shows, you basically have, you know, sort of jet homers, and I love that. But if you're going to talk about it, give both sides of it and like how it could be positive or negative. And he basically said this thing isn't gonna work and it's not gonna work and there's no benefit to it And even as a jet fan, I have lots of reservations about this. I have tons. I think we've already seen what the worst of this situation will be. And the worst of this situation is what it is, which is a media nightmare. It is a division of the fan, of the locker room, of everything. That is what it is at its worst. At its best, it could be a player that will help us win games. But... Is all that other shit that you're getting is it worth a player to help win games unless it's Peyton Manning? Right unless it's that guy who really can pull the thing. This is a guy who's not even a starter and yet is Pulling so much attention around him like some sort of gravitational force. That's why it's a bad deal It's not a bad deal from a football perspective It's a bad deal because the amount of stuff that's already hit the shit hitting the fan And we're talking about a backup. You don't need that kind of shit coming in about a backup. That's why this is a bad deal. But there are good football reasons to do that. And I'm hoping that the football reasons at the end of the season we look back and we won 11 games and maybe tick the East and have a home playoff game and we go fuck all that shit. We made it through. And that seems to be the Jets and what they've been doing the last couple years is fuck it. We don't care We're hard knocks. We're Rex Ryan. We're gonna say the most outlandish bullshit shit
01 Justin: We're gonna do outlandish shit and we're gonna live up to the hype and Rex Ryan did that in his first two years He said I'm not kissing any rings. I'm going to the AFC championship He says fuck you. I'm on hard knocks and all this shit that he says and he goes the AFC championship last year Took a step back now. It's like Fuck it, we will take the most divisive player in the entire National Football League and we'll put him on our back up on our team and fuck the rest of you media, we're going for it. We're the Jets, and this is the thing I don't like, and I was happy to go in this season without it, but here we are again and I'm a Jets fan so I'm behind the Jets, we put a fucking big ass target on the back of our jerseys or whatever and said, come for us. come for us again because we're the Jets and we say fuck you. So now we gave everybody in the world a reason to hate us, we gave everybody in the world a reason to gun after us and to target us and circle us on the schedule like we can't wait to fucking kill you, T-Bo 8s. Jake: It's kind of what you get when Rex Ryan is your head coach. It's kind of what you get. I think that's the point. But here's, I mean, I've read a lot of articles where it, you know, the Jets had a horrible season last year. And I think I've said this a few times on this very podcast. 144. If eight and eight is a horrible season, sign me up for that team, because I've lived through one of the 1 in 15s. I've lived through the 4 in 12s. I've seen it. That is a horrible season. The problem is as we state in our opening, expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way when Rex Ryan's in town. Yep. So eight and eight as a horrible season, I'll take it. And I think expectation just got raised up even higher. Justin: I don't see how a backup quarterback should raise your expectations. Because you just took one of the... Again, you took a player who everybody is gunning for, love or hate. And you said he is now on our team and you see all the reasons that's why because now it's the Sanchez and Tebow story Jake: ESPN finally did something smart what they did When Tebow this whole thing happened on that NFL 32 show that they have yep, they put up side by side mark Sanchez third year Justin: Eli Manning third year nice and they were identical of course I want to say one thing. I want to say this to the Jet fans because I'm there with you. We're there with you. Here's the one piece of thing I'll give you to take with you for the next week and then we got to get out of here. Or the next whatever. As a Jet fan, just enjoy the ride. This is part of the ride. This is part of being a fan. This will be the era that you live through. I look back at the Far of Era that year. and I had some amazing times. It was a fun ride to be on. We didn't get to the playoffs
