20 Jake: you Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast, the longest running New Year's Jet Podcast. I'm Jake and joining me for the 213th time is Justin. Justin how are you doing today? I'm good, I was just thinking 213, that's a decent number of podcasts. That's a lot of podcasts, even though we skipped an entire that you all. the week of your wedding. Yes. Podcast, hour long, draft special. Oh boy. Where we are both going to do our mock draft every round. I'm not doing that. Yes. I told you I wasn't doing it. I told you you had two weeks to do it. So now you have two weeks to do it. I'm not doing it. Yes you are. Here's what I will do. here's what I'm committing to negotiation and what I do is what I do is going to be to It's the dumbest thing I hate mock drafts. They're so dumb You got these idiots getting paid tons of money to prognosticate for months They changed their mind every day and they're still wrong. We are on Mel Kipers mock draft 4.0. He's the worst They're terrible. All right, don't be so angry. They I don't think Vic will be in that game. You think he's starting now? No, I don't think Vic or Gina are playing in that game. I think it's Maddie Sims game and maybe some other guy we haven't cut yet. Aaron Murray. Whoever. I don.
03 Jake: That's interesting. And the schedule which was supposed to come out today got pushed. It was supposed to come out last week, no. It was supposed to come out. So this is a weird thing that the NFL, for you who obviously know, the NFL moved their, the draft from April to May to create a little bit more suspense. And basically there's a big void in May that nothing's going on. Cause in June you have Um, yep, uh, many camps and then July at the beginning of, uh, training camps and then you're back in football. So they kind of feel like, well, let's extend free agency. Let's make it go longer and let's push it out. So now they can make a splash with the schedule for basically two weeks to get us ready for the draft and then the draft and then we're in. So, but the Jets have actually made a little bit of a splash. Let's start with the small one first, the small splash, which is signing the former Dolphins Corner. Demetri Patterson. Yawn. Yawn. Often hurt. Yawn. Talented guy. Justin: Yawn. Really? Yawn. Jake: Who cares? Alright. I'm not this guy. He's not even gonna be on the field cause he's always hurt. But he's got, like this guy's got talent. Alright, Justin has played. We play the Dolphins every year. And have you ever said to yourself, damn who's that guy? It's Dimitri Patterson. Justin: Yeah. Jake: Every year. Never. You're like, oh, there's Dimitri Patterson. Shit, he got another pick six like never well with G know he might have never all right fine and then in groundbreaking news the Near jets well really the Titans released CJ to K Chris Johnson Because he was owed almost eight million dollars or something crazy They said we're not going to pay that much, we're kind of in rebuilding mode constantly, and so we're not going to pay that much. So he got released, and he basically spent a week doing nothing. Then he went to visit the Jets on like a, what was it, like a Friday? And then he left the Jets facility and everybody was like, oh, he's not going to sign, but he stayed in New York. And lo and behold, he went to, I think, a Knicks game. Yeah, he went to a Knicks. Brooklyn game and then He signed with the Jets for two years roughly eight million dollars, I think it's like Something at 3.5 guaranteed with a lot of bonuses for playing time and whatever He's basically cuttable after this year. It's a one-year hit and if next year is great You keep them, but he's basically cuttable with no No cat pets if we can. Kind of funny how the Titans have Sean Green and we have Chris Johnson. Vic Sanchez, Green Johnson. Hey, let me ask you a series of questions. Okay, excellent. So um. Wow, who's the good one? Hold on.
00 Jake: I'm trying to think in what order. Are you having it? Are you crapping? Who uh. What? it. side of the ball or what were the Jets biggest needs heading into this offseason? What would you say they needed to address? Before people left or before... Just before it like in general you know if you look at the Jets 2013 season you'd say Oh man, they went 8 and 8, but if they were just a little better here, they might have been a little... Basically scoring. Scoring. And turning over the ball. Those were the two things that killed the Jets. Both offensive issues. Scoring the ball, turning the ball over. We call it scoring the ball, yes. So they were scoring the ball. Yeah, well they were turning it over too many times, and they were... And they would never... They couldn't score. Their offense needed some help. Right. Everyone knew it. Yes. So, they go into the off season. Who signed the best free agent wide receiver? I think the New York Jets signed the best. You could maybe make a... Who's the other guy? One other guy you could maybe... Golden Tate? No. Anyway, there's one guy that... Hakeem Nix? No. Who signed the best free agent wide receiver? It's the New York Jets. Who signed the best free agent running back? So maybe you throw out Ben Tate. Really? I don't think so. Never played a full season. Yeah I think it has to be the Jets. I mean CJ 2k never misses a game. Don't say that please. Doesn't miss games. But whatever. Yeah his loss to step is not a 2000. Nope. 2009 anymore. But he runs for a thousand yards hasn't ever run for less. Yep and he fast still. Still fast. We watched him still watch him burn through our boss fence and 99 yard touchdown and Who signed the best? Free agent quarterback on the market. That's easily the Jets was Michael Vick. Yeah So this whole idzic sucks thing When this guy was the last podcast was saying hey Let's wait a couple weeks because this is the time when things shake out and like guys get cut or for agents like kind of come out of the woodwork. Jets come out with a couple of big guns on offense here. So and then you go into the draft with those 12 picks and it's like oh we got the makings of something here. Totally agree, totally agree. I think the one of the podcasts I listened to calls him the Glacier. because he's just so slow moving like that he's idzing. I mean, this would be, and I know it's like, you know, being a jet fan, if he had signed one of the top corners and had landed to Sean Jackson. you could literally be writing the story of he's the greatest guy ever because the Sean Jax they could have had for they still could have for them they literally could have paid him the money and still had money left over and we still could have paid a lot of money though yeah he got paid a lot he did
03 Jake: but I feel like then we'd be looking at the draft going whatever we want. We have two good corners or a great corner and a good corner. We have two great wide receivers. One and two. Two and one A, one B. CJ2K helps the backfield. I mean now you have Lightning and Thunder. You know Goodson looks like he's a goner. He's gotta be. He's a goner. It looks great on paper. It all looks great on paper. He did well without what you said still Yeah, continuing the the momentum forward forward looking continuing to be able to Go out and get you know top tier guys for years to come it would seem and re-signing your And no one wants to see him go anywhere. being handed the situation that he walked into a year ago and the salary cap hell that he walked into without any talent. Like it's kind of odd for a team to be devoid of talent but also be spending like right at the cap and be in cap hell. Now has more talent and is out of salary, Capel. How can you, you can't complain about it. At this point, it's on the coaches. Like he's done what he's had to do. And I don't think there, I still don't think there's like a win now must. Like, no, it doesn't feel like it. Like there's not that feel like this is the year, like go, go or you're fired kind of situation. I think Rex saved his ass last year. I think Rex. You have to believe that Rex is still at a playoff serve. Yeah, I think he can put up another season similar to this where it's like an 8 and 8, 9 and 7, where they look good. Can't be 8 and 8. I feel like they could, but I don't think they're gonna be 8 and 8. I think they're gonna be better than that. They've got the talent. Agreed. This team just turned from... It's gonna be all about injuries in the draft, really. This team just turned from an 8 and 8 team of last year, which, whoever they were, to... They just I think I mean on paper. I know I'm just I did my little math I don't use paper, but whatever they just it looks like they just two more games. They remind me of the 2010 team who won 11 games. Well, that's I think your best analogy and people have been making it a little bit
05 Jake: They're making it around LT. Well, that's who I I've made it to two guys LT and LT and Thomas Jones both of which who You know, when you sign them, you're like, oh, maybe those guys are a little over the hill or, you know, Thomas Jones certainly wasn't a flashy runner. No. LT was in his prime one of the flashiest runners. This kind of reminds me a little more of the LT situation because LT was brought in after being on the decline. and was a little older than Chris Johnson was. I was getting tired. And came in and had a heck of a season in 2011. He had a lot of leadership skills, which I'm not sure Chris Johnson has. LT was like a real leader. But it really reminds me of that 2010 season. 9. 10. 11. 12. that went to the AFC Championship game with a second year quarterback, a quote-unquote over the hill running back LT, a pounder, Sean Green in this case that would be Johnson and Ivory. They have very similar sort of parallel styles to like LT and Sean Green here, those two guys. The receiving core was you know a bunch of guys. But they had some talent there, right? They had like a Braylon Edwards, San Antonio Holmes, Jericho, Kottree. Is this group as talented as that? Not sure. You know, Decker probably just as good as any of those guys. Curly just as good in the slot now as Kottree was then. Probably. But on that other side, do you have that Brelyn Edwards guy? Like the other outside guy, I'm not sure he's on the roster yet. Right. On offense, offensive line, probably a little worse. But- We had a very good offensive line. We had a very good one. But some young guys who could get better. Now is the defense the same don't know and have to coach them up I think the front seven is better than that front seven, but the back four are not the same as that back four So we'll see what happens there, but I think it's a very similar team If you ask me they have better coaching on the offensive side of the ball, which is where they need it because Rex is gonna do everything he can on that defensive side of the ball and continue to focus on it like he did last year. Yeah, and it to some degree worked. I mean, I think last year's losses, you know, you never like to come down and say one guy, but like it was two parts. It was two parts of the same guy. It was Geno Smith and just having some tank games. And then the other side of it, he had no talent around him to give the ball to. So he tanked at a time when nobody was on the field. Literally just picking up players off the street and saying, okay, hey, you've been sitting around. Why don't you come play?
01 Jake: Some of those guys ended up being halfway decent. Where's David Nelson at this point? He's on the roster. He's on the roster. Absolutely. If you ask me, he's the starter opposite Decker. Yeah. And Curly's in the slot. Yeah. And, you know, Big Cum is the tight end. And, uh, where's Hill in this? He right now needs to fight like hell because they're gonna draft a receiver if not two. We played the Bills every week, man. He beat awesome. Awesome. The Bills at home. Every week. He rocket. Um, so predict CJ 2K's stats for next year. Give me just an off the-cuff. Off the cuff. Do yards first. Receiving or rushing? Rushing, I would assume. Justin: Do both. Jake: I think he's going to catch the ball quite a bit. I think he'll rush for about 1100 yards. I think he'll have somewhere between 40 and 50 catches for somewhere between 400 and 500 yards. So it's. Thanks. you know, maybe 15 to 1600 total yards. I think he'll probably get that yards per carry average up above four. And I'm not sure he's going to score a lot of touchdowns, not sure they're going to use them at the goal line. That seems like a Chris Ivory job, if you ask me. Oh, it's a Geno Smith job. Even a Blal Powell job or a Geno Smith job. Geno Smith's. I'm like, I can touch down then and then. It was like, I think I've read three, Plow had one and Geos with that six. Yeah, it's kind of an anomaly. So we'll see if that reoccurs. But I think he can be a serious weapon. You know, Morning Wig used LaShawn McCoy very well. Speedy, shifty back. Now McCoy's better than... Chris Johnson, Chris Johnson to me is more of a straight line runner. So he's gonna have to hit a hole and have some space in front of him and go and no one will catch him. Same thing, I think he can really catch the ball and go like screen passes, some interesting little plays with him and Ivory on the field at the same time where he gets the ball in his hands. I think you'll see some wildcat situations where he's the guy coming across. loss. And Blah Powell will be the guy in the backfield being snapped to and the defense is gonna have to respect Chris Johnson coming around that edge. And you'll see Powell gash for some yards there. It'll be interesting cuz he definitely wants more. for. attention than anyone we've had in the backfield over the last couple years. Since maybe Tomlinson and even before that, Tom Jones. Just having CJ2K, just having Chris Johnson make you, just make your quarterback pick. So you talk about Marty and, and Wachon McCoy. Well, Wachon McCoy brings up Vic and Vic and... Chris Johnson, there's been a lot of talk of like, you know, maybe that pushes the favor more towards
05 Jake: Vic winning the starting job. I don't think it impacts it in the slightest. Really? If anything, I think it helps Gino because it takes some pressure off of him. Like he garners attention. You have to worry about him when he's in the backfield. Yeah. So you're, you're, likely to get a little more time. Maybe have some more guys in the box. Play action works better. Your read option is going to work better. Which, you know, ran pretty well last year. I know Mike Vick can run that like anybody in the NFL, right? But at this point, do you really want a 34 year old Mike Vick running? too much, I mean, he's gonna get hurt. So I think it's kind kind of a moot point. Well, if you want to play him in the fourth quarter, you can do that too. I think it's kind of a moot point. I don't know if it impacts one way or the other. It helps one guy more than another guy necessarily. I think so. My stats for him, he's under 10 touchdowns. I think he's like seven or eight. I could definitely see three or four that are just explosions like he'll get the ball with the 40 and he'll just run it in like he just will go by guys and I can see them using him closer. I mean they'll throw to him. So I think he's like seven to eight touchdowns definitely over a thousand yards, but under 1100. And you're right, in the catching and receiving, I think 500 is a lot, but you know, maybe three to 400 type of thing. Here's what I'd like to see. I don't want him to do too much because I think that I think that I want to see it mixed up really well. I'd like to see him get about 15. carries and maybe like somewhere around eight maybe 18 19 touches a game on Chris ivory to get somewhere between eight and ten those are all carries cuz he's not catching the ball, right? I'd like to see Powell get five touches a game. Yeah, you just put a lot of touches. Yeah, that's that's where it should be That's you we were throwing the ball over the place and where'd we end up? Oh better than anybody thought we'd end up. 2010, we were running the ball at people's asses. Yeah. It was like, yeah, you wanted playoffs? We're going to run over you. We're going to be a running team. Seattle just won. They were a running team. All this high flying, high flute, and nonsense. The year before that, Baltimore, they were a running team. You run, you play defense, you win. It's kind of how it works. They played Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl, high flying, passing Manning. What happened? They shut his shit down faster than, as soon as the game started, his shit was over. About two seconds into the game. Yeah, I'm excited. Biggest question is what number he's gonna wear because he's not wearing number 20. Not wearing 28, that's for sure. I wonder if that was part of his decision making. Thank you. Like, he has to change his number. He does. He literally has to change his number. You know what, it's so funny. I know we don't have too much time, but when they signed him, it was like, oh, he can't
04 Jake: wear a 28. So I started thinking about the way the NFL, like, structures numbers and that you can't just pick any number. Like, at, like, I was starting to think, like, okay. Kickers, punters, quarterbacks wear single digits and teens. Receivers wear in the teens. Okay, and the 20 Hs is basically running backs and defensive backs. Yep. And then the 30s is kind of the same running backs defensive backs. the 40s are like safeties and full backs. The 50s are linebackers, the 60s are offensive linemen, the 70s are also offensive linemen and some defensive linemen. The 80s are receivers and tight ends, the 90s are defensive linemen, like why did they do this? Like it makes no sense. Why not just let anyone wear any number? Is it like because of ineligible receivers downfield or I don't know like I'm sure can a receiver wear the number four That's what gives a shit. I don't know NFL in their rules He's so I mean you think he's gonna move to another number 20 something Maybe seven he thinks he can't wear 82 like I would be like give me 82 just reverse it He can't they won't let him like no, you're not a running back. That's Kyle Wilson Well, he can always pay one of those days. Well Decker paid Decker paid big coming coming great. He's having a seven. You can pay guys. You can do that. Can't pay off Curtis. No It's not retired though. Is it? Oh, yeah. It is retired officially. Yeah, it's retired Yeah, so it's in the ring of honor. What's in the ring of honor doesn't mean it's retired. Yeah, it does. No it doesn't. It's retired in the ring of honor. Ring of honor is not retired number. They are not the same thing at all. I think they're done both. Well ring of honor is one thing, but they're not the same thing at all. Like ring of honor and retired number are completely different things. I'm pretty sure they've done both. Curtis Martin has Jersey number retired by Jets September 9th 2012. There you go. So he's retired but there are guys in the ring of honor whose numbers are being worn. Yeah well there's also something about jerseys like if you go I know that there's some craziness that if you move to a different jersey you can then reopen the numbers. Like yeah, because I know the Bears are having this thing where they've almost retired so many numbers. Yeah. Well, that's that's on the Bears So we basically have a countdown, the Justin countdown, but I think we have two more podcasts
05 Jake: left in us next couple weeks, maybe three, but probably two. The season comes out tomorrow or the next day. We got to have a season podcast. Got to talk about season. Talk about the games, whatever. Not make our prediction for the season, although mine's formulating and been formulating. You've already texted me that Jet to Gonna Win this through goal about 17 times. I have done that. And then we need to do a pre-draft one because then you're going on your honeymoon and then the poor fans have to wait until you get back for us to do all the draft analysis and to say whether they're excited or not and give draft grades, which everybody loves. I think that's our upcoming schedule. Any questions? Not for me. All right, so we will do another one next week about the regular season. We'll do one the following week about the draft and then that will be, and then we'll do one following up after your back about the follow up to the draft. Anything more on the Jets? No? Jes News? No. I like where they are right now. This is exactly where I want this team to be, and I'm hoping someone doesn't fuck it up. Which is, just keep us under the radar. That stupid 8 day team, who like was 8 and 8 by a miracle. Just keep them under the radar. Keep them those guys. So we don't have that moment where it's like, oh everybody's after the Jes. No, no, no, no. We're no good. We're not going to do very good. No, again. Stay away from us. No. Let's let the Patriots, they're gonna win the AFCEs. Dolphins will be the second place. Those Jets will barely finish eight and eight again. Great, that's exactly where I want us to be. And I want us to go, bam, into the regular season and make shit happen. All right, speaking of making shit happen, we'll be back next week. We'll do our podcast. Maybe we'll use our, not our remote mics. This is Justin and Jake. Saying enjoy. No, I'm not. I'm saying let's go Jets. You
