09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast! Longest running New York guest pod guest on the interweb and we are back the judge said get back to work So we're back to work and my name is Jake if you've forgotten because it's been so long And joining me as a very special guest live in the studio today. It's a little sounding weird because We're in a we're in a New studio. We're in our draft war room. It doesn't have as good acoustics. We might hear dogs barking you might hear people outside playing But joining me is Justin for the 109th time. How you doing Justin? Doing good. We got big board up Justin: Yep, we got the big board up. Big board up where we got tape. We got miles of tape that we're watching. Oh, yes. Jake: That's where we've been. We've been scouting. For the last three weeks. We've been on the road. We've been on the road scouting and watching video. Full disclaimer, both Justin and I, while we love the draft, and we'll be watching the draft tonight. although not together. But we will be, we won't go into the Meadowlands because I'm not gonna go sit in the Meadowlands. People are doing that. Yeah, I mean, there's a big party out of the Meadowlands. You watch on the big screens. I mean, it sounds kind of cool except for if it gets in the first pick or the first one or two or three, hey, okay, that's gonna be a big party. Justin: Who wants to sit there for four hours watching? Jake: To get to the 30th, which... Which, to be honest, and we'll talk about this in our agenda, which we'll get to in a second, I think they're gonna, I think they might trade out of. So, might be sitting there for the, and they trade out of the first. That's it. The first round is only tonight. So, then you basically have been there the whole time and not seen them pick. And spent about 50 bucks on food and drink. At the, yeah, if you had a beer. One beer and then some pretzels. So, um, but we have an agenda. I have actually a ton of crap to talk about. So we had some time today. So that's what happens when you take about a month off. Yes, and we've had vacation So we had we had some time off then we had vacation time. So we're back We're gonna talk about Rex's new book a little bit Talk about 2011 schedule. Very fun Talk about Revas and Obama talk about the end of the lockout, what that might mean, and if everybody's been paying attention because we know Justin hasn't. And then we're talking about the draft. And since we're not draft Knicks, and we basically don't pretend to be, and I'm not going to say that I have, although I just did, but I haven't been studying the draft boards forever, and I don't watch college football. Although my wife is taking an interest in Northwestern for some reason. I don't know. So she wants to go to Northwestern?
00 Jake: She wants to go to Northwestern game this year. Justin: Is that like in Chicago or in that area? Why Northwestern? A friend. Jake: She has a friend who likes Northwestern and so yes, so I might actually go to Northwestern game. My first college game. Where purple? I guess. I don't know. The whole thing is kind of strange. But so we don't really pay attention too much to college football. We basically wait until the draft until they're on the Jets team. Another pay attention to them. So, but I've been reading. I've been doing some homework. You've probably been doing much much less. Much less. As a matter of fact, I've done no homework. Justin: Excellent. So, you know, this is gonna be the most uninformed pre-draft podcast in the history of pre-draft. Hopefully you'll bullshit the whole thing. Jake: Oh, yeah. And then we'll just take this part out in post. So no one will know. No, leave it in. Alright. Okay. Full disclosure. But to make it more fun, because I know that we're not really going to go through our 10 rounds of mock draft that we have, because we don't have them. Uh, I have that. I decided to do a five draft prediction. So I have a five draft prediction to questions which we're going to go over and discuss. I'm glad you decided to do this stuff. Yes, well this is what I decide. So let's get to it. And let's talk about Rexie's new book. Are you going to read it? I am. I pre-ordered it. You already ordered it. On Kindle. Yeah, of course. By the way, I love pre-ordering books on Kindle because it comes down literally the morning of. So you wake up in the morning and boom, the book's right there where you can read. Justin: I read Kishan's book. Did you? You're a speeder. Don't we get involved? I have it. I watch. Jake: Looking up in my collection, I'm now moving away from the draft board and up into my collection. I have a series of Jets books. I have Tales from the Jets sideline, about Herm. I have Gang Green in a relevant look at behind season 38, well 37 seasons of New York Jets football. So I actually have a collection. Oh, and you play to win the game by Herm Edwards. You're a big Herm Edwards. My Herm Edwards? Well he was the coach. I don't know if you know this or not, but he was the coach of a team that I like. He was the coach of the New York Jets for a while. So you're going to get Rex's book. Oh yeah, of course. So, and he's going to be on Letterman, May 2nd. Oh. So I hope you open here at any of that, because I'm literally moving around the room as I talk. This will be not the best audio you've ever heard on our podcast. Not our snowball mic is not here. Justin: May 2nd. So what is that? That's like next week. Jake: Yeah. So he'll be on Letterman, so record that. I've heard he's already kind of thrown out some stuff about Vernon Goulston, some quotes about him basically saying he's a loser. And I think he takes off on Tom Brady a little bit. Apparently he lets go a little bit. So that's good. Justin: Let's go a little bit? As if he doesn't let go in every single press conference that you've ever seen with him? Jake: Press conferences are different. If you do a press conference, press conference, you know, okay. The written word, you know. It's forever. Justin: He goes off on Kerry Roads, a little too Hollywood. Yeah, Hollywood. How's his nickname? Hollywood Kerry. Yep. And talks about how the Jets are the number one team and the Giants are number two and
05 Justin: that the Jets will be better than the Giants for the next ten years. Really? Yes. Wow. Giant fans did not like that very much. Jake: Well, it's been true for the last two years. It has. So I think he's got... He's only talking about eight more years. Yeah, no wait, your year is then. Pretty much, I'd say that next year, we'll probably do better again. We'll see. Anyway, so that's cool. Speaking of, hello my segues, speaking of next year, let's talk about the schedule. It came out while we were both on vacation. Ooh, I wanna pick my games. So for those of you who aren't paying attention, Justin, I'm a season ticket holder, and Justin is F-O-S-T. friend of the season pickle that has a fox. He's a fox. Also a broadcaster that needs Justin: to go to games so that I can cover them. I kind of go with my press pass. Ticket is my Jake: press pass. And at $125 a seat, you're going to go to very few games. Alright, so let's talk about it. A couple of things. Preseason is we play the Monday night opener, which is kind of fun. I don't even have the preseason scheduled for it. It's Houston. We play Houston, we play Eagles, Giants, and... Kind of sucks. Why? Well, we always play the Eagles, we always play the Giants, and we're actually playing them in the regular season this year. Yeah, and we get...they're both home games this year. So we get the home preseason. Which I think is good because that game will mean something more just because we know we're going to be playing them again. No, it means absolutely nothing. No, it's... Because we're not going to be doing anything. It's more fun because I think...no, it's not going to be doing anything, but it's going to be fun to watch the game. Like, oh look, this is the team we're going to be playing again. I hope you enjoyed this video. Bye. I don't know. Maybe a little bit. All right. These are the six stringers that won't be on this team when we play them in the regular season So first of all, I want to let you know that I have a connection with the the schedule makers Because I prayed to them in all their glory I know and so I have a wedding the first weekend the opening weekend of football and So does that oh my brother-in-law? Anyway, so my mother my brother was getting married laws He does not list his podcasts, but maybe he does. So anyway, he is getting married on the opening weekend. And I was basically very much worried that I, and on a Saturday night down in the Caribbean. So like, destination. Destination wedding. So I would have had to, I'll have to fly back on Sunday, right? And I was figuring if it was a one o'clock game, I, no way I can make it. Because all flights, no matter what, it's a two stop. I would never make it back. So I was praying for two things. One, a Monday night game. Thanks for watching! Which, or a Sunday night game, or a third thing was that maybe if the holdout happened, there would be no football and then I wouldn't miss anything. So yeah, so it turns out we got the Sunday night opener for 9-11, which is actually, they're going to make a thing about it, 9-11, Sunday night opener against Dallas. 10 year anniversary, right? 10 year anniversary. Giants are doing in in, Washington because the other two places that were hit
02 Jake: So I'm not really gonna go over the 9-11 stuff because a little bit too close I don't know. I'm not ready to talk what sort of 9-11 on Jets podcast, but What do you think another Monday night another opener on this time the last year's Baltimore Monday night? We lost and this year we got we got the Cowboys On Sunday night can't wait Can't wait. Can't wait. This one of your games you want to go to? Yes. This is game number one. I figured. I figured as much. So anyway, I'm flying back early in the morning. I'll be back in time to leave here middle of the afternoon to get there. Justin: I'll be there with you. Jake: Second game is Jacksonville. Justin: We're not going through and predicting anything, right? Jake: No, we can throw up with it. We're just going to talk about it in general. Jacksonville at Yeah, so we're home for the first two games. That one I won't go to. I'll let you bring someone else to that one. I think Hayden's going to go that one. My daughter. So yes. Nice early game for her. Yeah, not a big deal. You know, anyway, we'll talk about the game. So then we have a way stretch. This is a tough stretch. Yeah, not easy. We go Oakland, which I don't think Oakland's a Thanks for watching! problem from a team standpoint. Justin: Oh, they got a little better last year. Although they fired their coach. I don't have a quarterback. But it's always tough to go play there. Jake: Yeah, we always do. Always have a problem out there. Justin: But this is a tough three game stretch at Oakland, at Baltimore, at night, and then at New England at 4.50. which is, you know, another sort of night. Jake: Yeah, what sort of night? Justin: Oh, you know, 4.15 on... Yeah. Jake: I mean, again, you look at the first half of our season and there's only two one o'clock games. Justin: Yeah, we don't play one o'clock games. Jake: It's okay, you know what I think? Last year we didn't play any one o'clock games, we played like two. And this year we... we have the same thing. We have a lot of night games. Watch, I think, you know, there's two sides of it. One is you get to watch other football and then watch the Jets. Some of them don't like it because, you know, the next day you have to, you know, it's harder, you're up at night, you gotta travel, you know, you're tired. I kind of like it because I like, I love to be able to focus on the other games for the other time and then watch my game. It gives me, because I love watching all things football. So okay, so then we have, yeah, then we have At New England. That's gonna be tough. That's me. They're gonna hype that puppy up. That's the rematch of the rematch of the rematch And then we have then we have Miami coming so we come back home and we got a Monday Nighter to home Monday night Miami. Oh, that's a Monday night Monday night Miami. Is that one of the ones you want to go to? Justin: No, I was gonna leave that one. Yeah, no, you have a lot of people that want basically Jake: You know you weren't gonna go to that one. Yeah, I'm gonna leave that one Justin: You're already gonna try I want to go to the week After that, I want to go to San Diego. Jake: Oh yeah, that'll be a good one. Okay, then we have San Diego. Again, let's see. Week 7, will San Diego be doing their trying to pull out of their bad start? Maybe 2 and 4. Will they still be in their bad start? Hopefully they'll still be in their bad start.
00 Jake: Alright. Don't we ever buy? Goodbye? Middle of Pac-Bye? Basically? I like it. Justin: I like the game after the buy too. Jake: And then we have Jett's going to Buffalo. Actually in Buffalo, not in Toronto, which is a thing. Yeah, okay, 1 o'clock in Buffalo. Great. Stay at home, watch it. Then we have the Patriots coming to the Jets for another nighttime game. So we've now gone four nighttime games in 10 weeks. And we have another one the next week. Which is a Thursday. So we have one, two, three, four, and I bet you anything that that week, that last week, if there's any meaning of that game, that game will get pushed too. So we have what four or five one two three last two weeks We have five five games that are Monday night games or a nighttime games trying to think if I want to go to that Well, that's my best again my brother goes to so the other ticket is still available but I want to go Yeah, all right, so that's a good one then the next week of note We have Denver coming to town there's no at Denver. Sorry Thursday night game Justin: Sunday night game and then the Thursday night game which is not fair that isn't fair Jake: They shouldn't do that and it's literally four days apart. So you almost have like two days to prep Then we get to Denver then we get ten days to wait for the for the Buffalo for the bills to come You ought to crush them. I'll be at that one. Okay, that's my tradition. That's your tradition game then we have going to Washington. That could be a good road game actually. Go down to Washington at one o'clock. So yeah, there's another one o'clock game. Then we have Casey coming. Okay, not so interesting. I don't know. Casey's all over the map. Then we go to Philly. That would also be a good road game to go to. And then end the season with, I think, two of the more interesting games. So all games have been moved from Sunday, which is Christmas, to Christmas Eve. So there are no games on Christmas. Actually, there's a night game on Christmas. This is a Saturday game. This is a Saturday game. I'll be there. So this is it. Yes, and our buddy, I invited him and he said he's not going to go. Why? Can't get out of Christmas Eve. What a jerk douche. Yeah, he's a jerk. Who does that? Can't go. Can't go. No, I'll say. It's the opposite of can't wait. Can't go. You know what? He's going. I hope I've already had the discussion with him. It's not happening. Justin: Not happening. You can't get out of Christmas Eve. It's not even the fucking holiday. It's the day before the holiday. Jake: Yeah, that's big for us. Not for us boys. Justin: But it's at one o'clock. I agree. Jake: Like, what do you eat? Justin: Breakfast together? Jake: No, usually Christmas together. What do you get up that morning and like, Hey, it's the day before the holiday. get up in the morning and drink a little tea. Listen, I said it was Christmas Eve. I said it to my wife on my Christmas Eve and she gave me like that look of like, oh wait, you're not gonna, I said it's one o'clock. She goes, and then kind of went down and I, then I reminded her that our family, this year is like the one year that everybody's scattered into the wind. So there almost is no...
01 Jake: Christmas Eve thing. Why is Christmas Eve bigger than Christmas? It sometimes is. It really is. Some fanways, I don't know if it's an Italian thing, so I'm not Italian, but whatever. I think there's a thing about Christmas Eve so much being bigger. Justin: Yeah, so he's gonna go with the family and watch the game on TV. Or is he just not gonna be able to watch the game? I don't know. We'll probably watch it on TV. Jake: Yeah, I agree. Wow. Anyway, so that's a great game. Wow. That could be a great game. Talk about... being whipped by the boats. You can go to that game. Yes. I will be there. And then the next game just makes my heart sing. Why does it make my heart sing? Because this is New Year's Day, and you'll be in Miami for New Year's Eve. Yes! I will be in Miami for New Year's Eve. So this is a good game. Justin: I just came back from Miami. Yeah. From South Beach. Yeah. Jake: I am very, very happy when you were on a cruise, right? That's where I came in. Justin: And I stayed over. night. Where do you stay? My buddy lives on South Beach. Where? Right on the corner of Jake: 18th and Collins. I know it well. I usually stay on the 10th and Collins or 8th and Collins. Yeah so that's up there. It's up by hotels, like big hotels like Lowe's Justin: and all those. Yeah he lives right on the beach. Cool. Very nice. Very nice. Well maybe Jake: I could stay at his place. So anyway that's the season. What do you think? Tough. A little bit. 60 to know excellent all right let's move on since we're not really gonna discuss it let's move on All right read us an Obama and then that's what five minutes this is really talking point we got dinner Didn't they have dinner? No well yeah, but they talked for like five minutes Justin: He knew about Rebus Island somebody whispered in his ear before it read just came in it's like Mention the island! Yeah, and he said I'm covering your butt. He's like, what's the remember you're lost? He's like, no, no, no. Mention the island. Jake: Well, Obama's a big sports guy. I mean, I know he's more basketball. I know he's into the Bears, obviously. But he's a big basketball guy, because he does well in the brackets. By the way, second place in the brackets. Whooped your ass. So now it's public. Great. And then. I don't know. I mean, I don't hear him talking a lot about football. More basketball. Justin: This was in New York. No, he was. So he must have just been in New York and... For something, yeah. ...Reavis's agent was like, hey, let me present. Jake: No, he met with a couple other players. He met with a couple players. Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't know. Talk about the lockout, maybe? Big news. Not so big news. Yeah. Speaking of the lockout, which is, I think, a good segue... That's why he did that. Yeah, that's good. So while we've been gone, the lockout started and then was, and now the judges ended the lockout and initially the NFL has to end the lockout. So a little bit of background, everyone knows about this situation, basically. The NFL. Justin: I saw it yesterday. Yeah, it is. Jake: Right, I'm gonna let you know what happened. I was about to say, I didn't really know about it. So the NFL, the players you can decertify their union, which then forced the hand of the NFL to lock them out
01 Jake: because they're no longer a union, they're not gonna work as a union, you can't collectively bargain with them, so we have to lock you out, so we're not dealing with every single one of them. So they go in the lockout. So then the players all put together a lawsuit against the NFL to say, well, you know, well now that we're not in the union, you need to treat a spay or whatever to, you know, against, you know, working as players for the NFL. The NFL then, then they go back and forth in the suit. The players then say to the judge, end this lockout, right, we need to go back to work. Which is funny because it kind of mixes into like real like workers like like construction workers You know you can sense this has a little bit of background in you know like guys working for plants and making steelers You know steel and you know these are the kind of Union stuff, so it's like this lockout and anyway So the judge said they agreed with the players with a big win for the players said and the lockout The judge, the NFL went to say, can you extend that? The judge said no. And so now, the lockout has to be ended. And now the NFL has to come up with what rules they go back to. Because basically, there are no rules. There's no agreement, right? So it's like, what do we go? Do we go back to last year's rules? 2009 rules? Justin: Last year's rules would help us out quite a bit, I think. Jake: Well, it's about what's better for the. I think the owners would rather go back to last year because the cap was, there was no cap, and which means that they, no minimal and no maximum. Remember, some teams didn't. Justin: Yeah, but I think it would help us, the Jats, quite a bit, if there was no cap, because then they'd be able to sign all these guys that they'd have to worry about. Jake: Well, that's true, except for the... the owners have an agreement amongst themselves, unknown and untalked about, that no team is going to go bust through the cap and make a big splash of money. And the reason is because that sets a precedent for what the cap will be in the future. So if the Dallas Cowboys went out and spent, or Jerry Jones went out and spent $300 million, AKA the Yankees, and blew through the cap, right, then when they go back to negotiate, for the cap whenever this negotiation starts to happen, like it could go through court and whatever, then the players could say, well, that should be the cap. Remember, players want the cap to be big because they want to get more money. Owners want a cap to be reasonable. Some owners don't want to have high caps because they don't want to pay a lot of money. Like owners of teams that aren't doing well. Jaguars, Panthers. So, you know, there's teams out there that don't want that. Did you just cough jaguar Panthers? I think I did. Okay, I think that might, maybe it's my dog. Um, so anyway. So that's the situation. What, what this matters for now is it looks like NFL will go on, right? It, it, unless the NFL can, unless NFL can convince the judge to, to, you know, to, I guess go back to the lockout or let them stay the thing for months, the football might go on and it actually might continue. and it would just be weird rules and there might be some rules that, you know, basically are here for a while but then get broken.
03 Jake: So I think it's a wild, wild west. And right before the draft, that means a free agency could open up at any moment. I guess that's the part I don't really understand is when the free agency starts or ends. But... It now means that the draft is happening at the time that three agencies happening, which is normally not the case, right? Normally, three agency happens sometime in March, I think, right? Is it March? It's whatever. It's many. It's a month or two in advance. And so then the draft is sort of after three agencies happened. So a lot of the moves have already happened. Well, now it's kind of open season and in terms of the draft. So I expect a frickin' wah-wah-west draft. And I'm actually excited. I think that's fun. For a fan... I'm happy. Happy, happy, because I love the Wild West and I want to see people going crazy. I love the Deadwood. And I also trust in our... and Mike Tannebom. Trust in the tanning. Justin: Um, yeah, I think honestly though the whole no cap situation, I think although it could set a precedent... I feel like teams that are close and really want it, like the Jets are pretty close and really, really want it, they'll go for it. Like, no need to, there is no over. Jake: Well, there is, because there's a set cap that's been in the existence, meaning some $130 million. Justin: Yeah, but that thing always fluctuates. It goes up and down. It goes up. Right. So there is no going over, because there is no cap right now. So. But there's a saying, there's a precedent. What I'm saying is... It's not $300 million, it's $130 million. Sure. What I'm saying though is, if it comes down to Jets have to decide between Braylon Edwards and Antonio Holmes, or they don't have to decide between both of them and they can just sign them both, they're going to sign them both. And that's that. Jake: Well, it also depends to the Jets think that... you know, okay, fuck everybody else, fuck the other teams, fuck the owners, we think this is our year, we got to the AFC Championship twice, all we need is two more guys and I'll blow another 10 million dollars this year to do it, maybe, but again, you're doing it in a situation where you don't know what the long-term rules are going to be. So here's the thing, I don't know what the wrong term rules are going to be. I'm a fan. I want 16 games, I don't want 18. I've thought through that a long time. I don't want 18 games. Oh, you thought it through? I thought it through. Okay. Yeah, that's where I was going to do it, but I thought it through. Don't want 18 games. I want 16 games. I want... The problem with this discussion and what's going on with the teams right now and the CBA is none of it seems to be revolving around the fans. And none of it is like, how can we make the fan experience better? How can we make it more affordable? How can we do anything to make it better for the fans? It's all about how much money can we make and how much money can we put in our pocket? Whether the owner's putting money in their pocket. So like if I thought that the owners were going to get some agreement and then they lower their ticket prices, I'd be for that. But I know they're not going to. You know, so anyway, let's move on because it's a happening thing, but we'll probably
02 Jake: discuss it for the next six months. Get to the draft already. Let's get to the draft. All right. First thing on the draft is the Jets helped stop. Speaking of seeking ticket holders, but I was just good and putting them all together. but the Jets held a... Season ticket holder only pre-draft conference call Monday night. Were you on it? Yeah, they called, they basically called your number that you have on your season ticket account and then had a conference call for about 45 minutes with Tannenbaum and others and they answered questions from season ticket holders. Did you ask a question? I did not because I was in the middle of putting my kid to bed so I couldn't like you know break in with a question. Really great, love the concept. Tough with the draft because the draft is such a smoke and mirrors thing. It's like, what do you think you're going to do in the first round? I'm not going to tell you. Who are you going to draft? I'm not going to tell you. Are you going to do a defensive or offense? Fucking not going to tell you. You know, they didn't say that, but they said, well, we're going to evaluate the blah blah blah blah. Eh, whatever. I mean, the answers weren't very good. The concept was great. And then doing another one tomorrow at 10. Justin: Where they'll answer questions about why they did what they did in the first round. Jake: Yep, and Goodell's going to be there. Justin: On the conference call? On the conference call. Jake: Can I be there? Are you a fos- Alright, well maybe you can be. Okay. So I thought that was pretty cool. You know, again, for someone who's paying a lot of money now for these tickets, anything you can do to add any value. Please. They're also going to be sending out new hats. They're going to be sending out the new season ticket hats, which I'm happy about. Caps. Alright, moving on. So, draft. I have the five draft predictions written up here that you're probably reading. They're questions. They're not predictions. Well, they're predictions about some things that are going to happen. Or questions. I think they're questions. They all ended a question mark. But let's talk about the first couple picks, because that's always the most interesting. So... Alright, last year let's do number five first. We're going to do the fifth question first. Okay. Alright, so fifth question, or the first question, is who goes first. Who goes number one? Carolina Panthers, worst team in the league last year, have the number one pick. They clearly have quarterback issues, but they picked the quarterback last year, I think 46 overall, of Austin. So what do they do? They got basically two of the top guys out there. They got Newton, who's Cam Newton, who's sort of 6'5", 236, like mega quarterback. He's like just unbelievably athletically talented. But he hasn't played it in a pro scheme, he hasn't had to read defenses, he plays a spread offense. And is he going to be able to pick that up and be effective either now or even with any amount of training? And then they got, is it Sirius Daris? What's his first name? Marcel. Marcel, who's just a big load fast guy, gets the court. In fact, there's tape of him, can't... Capturing and tackling Cam Newton that he's kind of funny So do you go defense? And so what do you think if I'm Carolina? I'm going defense
04 Justin: Okay, you know what do you think is gonna happen you put those two guys out there? Do you think there's another guy out there? Well, there's another guy that that might be the guy that they The way NFL Drafts, it's like, you don't pick this guy number one. It's like an odd thing. But the receiver from Georgia, AJ Green, would probably be a really good pick for them. Because they have literally nothing on offense. I mean, they have a couple running backs. and an aging Steve Smith who doesn't want to beat him. Jake: Right. Justin: And you can pick a quarterback all you want, but if there's no one to throw the ball to, he's gonna suck. I mean, Jim Klassen, I mean, the guy was not a bad college player, and he was a second round pick. You really don't know what you have there. I wouldn't pick another quarterback, particularly since Cam Newton's not a short thing, Gabbard's not a short thing, none of these guys are short things. So I wouldn't pick, you know, there's not a Peyton Manning, there's not even a Sam Bradford. Like I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I would pick either defense, which would be... Darius or this guy, Von Miller or P.J. Green. That would be where I would go. What do you think is going to happen? The Pink Newton. Yeah. That's the let's make money play. Jake: That's it. That's it. Who do you want to sell jerseys for? Who do you want to put... And remember, the Carolinas got two problems. One, they suck as a team, currently, because they were the worst last year. Two, their franchise is hurting, right? They, along with the other expansion franchises, the Jaguars and Panthers that my dog coughed before, are hurting financially. They're not doing well. They can't put butts in seats. Prices are going up. In downturn economies, the hardcore people that it. hold on to their Jets, Giants, Steelers, Packers tickets and just bite through it you know those guys are all new season ticket holders so then they haven't been there for 50 years and they're not like well that's you know I rather pay my Jets season tickets than my mortgage you know these guys got tickets whatever or three, four, five, six years ago, and they're like, yeah, frick it, you know, they're not good, I'm gonna let go. So. They have problems financially. I agree. I think it's a situation where they need to bring in someone who's going to bring in, who's going to bring in the hype. Justin: Those remind me a little bit of, I can't remember how many years back now, four or five years ago with the Vince Young, Reggie Bush, and then Houston ended up picking Mario Williams. which ended up being the better of the three players. Jake: Well, Reggie Bush went on the Super Bowl. Yeah, but you said Texans haven't gone to the playoffs. Justin: Yeah, but hold on. Reggie Bush didn't win them that Super Bowl. Drew Brees won the Super Bowl in their defense.
00 Justin: But not Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush has been by most accounts a flop in the NFL, as has Vince Young. Jake: Well, Vince Young, definitely. I think Vince Young more, Reggie Bush, let me say it. Justin: Well that's what you're looking at in Cam Newton. You're looking at like Vince Young, Team Boy, and all. Jake: Well they're saying more like, they're comparing him with sort of like a Rothlessberger and someone unlike a... Justin: Yeah, well that's because they always want to compare him to someone who's good. Well he's huge. Well he's huge. Yeah, well Vince Young's pretty frickin' big. Jake: This guy's huge. This guy's a man. Vince Young's a big boy. I know. Well, alright. Well, I think they're gonna go with the sexy pic. It's a sexy pic. It's, I don't know, do I think it helps them as a team? No, I don't think it's for them. And especially last year, number one pick went to? Last year? Yeah. It was St. Louis. Sue? No. Bradford. Bradford. OK, two was Sue. And he's like dominant. He became a dominant player within the first year. So. So. I would go defense because I think you can get much more value out of it. I think they're going to go sexy and go Cam Newton. So you say Newton, I say Newton. We both think they shouldn't pick it. They both will. Yeah. All right. What do we know though? What do we know? No. There's one broadcaster and one fan in this room and one dog. I don't know which one you are. So broadcasters, someone tweeted... Justin: Do you like Todd McShay or do you like Mel Kiper Jr.? Jake: I actually think they're both pretty annoying. I think... Why do you think they have to have two of them? I think they're... what's funny is... Mel Kiper is sort of like a... he's like... he's an icon, like he's so... he reminds me of like... it's like Larry King. Like he's so much his own character that he's kind of funny to watch and the hair and the thing. I also like when they go back and show his, since he's been doing this for so long, they go back and show his history of doing this forever and like he'll say like something like, Ah Peyton Manning will never be anything. I don't know if that was one of his things. But you know he'll say either something really smart. or something really stupid and they'll show it, which I really like. Well, Mel Kiper is on ESPN. Justin: So is Tom McShay. Jake: And Tom McShay is on ESPN. Who's on? There's a bunch of guys on. Justin: I don't know anyone else. I just love the NFL guys. Jake: That goes to our third question, since we'll go to our third question now. Who will do the better broadcast? Or who will you watch? Justin: So I've never had the NFL network before, but I've moved recently, and I now have it. I know. So... I'm just gonna do it because you have it. I will, I've always watched ESPN for the draft, because that's what I've had. I will probably flip back and forth based on who's annoying me at that point. Like, I'm watching ESPN and like, Kishan and Mel Kiper are annoying me, I'll flip to NFL Network and then if... you know, whoever they have on starts annoying me like martial or whoever else they have on. I might set up the command center for this. Jake: I think you should. I might do both. Well does the NFL Network have like
03 Jake: better access or like different cameras? Here's the thing, two things you should think about and this is for you all you people. It's rich eyes and I assume. Yeah and a bunch of characters. One is the NFL Network has a new iPad app out, iPad iPhone app for free. and they're promising different live video feeds on the iPad app. Well that's cool. Two is, second one that's cool, is that ESPN, because ESPN has college football, ESPN has a lot more take. So what I've noticed when I watch the NFL Network in the past is you go So. It's great, but they don't have any tape. So they can't, what I love is the showing the, the sort of the reel of the guy. Like, oh, here's their top pin, top plays. NFL doesn't have it, because they don't have the agreement to show the tape. ESPN does. So I think ESPN does a better job. I generally like watching them better. I like Bloomberg the team and I don't know. They just, and again, Mel Kiper, I like watching ESPN. I too will flip around. But you know what? I think I might set up the command center and do three. I might put the iPad on one and the other two. I might do three different screens for the draft. I might go crazy. Might be. Will the Apple TV have something on there? No, but I'll put the iPad up to it. Right. Sweet. Alright, so then let's go. How many were questions? So... Yeah. Two, three more questions? Three more questions, but they're jets, they're all jets questions. So let's go number one. So, will the jets move up or down off their first pin? 30th in the draft. So that's your prediction. Yeah. Really? Yeah. And, pick what? Justin: Um, a rusher. There's gonna be some guy past rusher who's like he should have went tenth but he's still lingering at 16 and that's it that's the move. They'll move up. Yeah. Jake: Alright I think they're gonna move down. I think they the guy they want who I don't know what is I mean a lot most of predictions are saying that it's um that it's a Phil Taylor. That's like most people are saying either Phil Taylor or what's the other guy? Is he a big fat guy? Yeah, he's a big fat guy. I think you could get big fat guys in the sixth round. Or yeah, but this is like a talented big fat guy. Nah, I feel like- Like a Jenkins replacement. Nope, I feel like you get the- guys late. Alright, so then corner, safety. No corner. I think safety. I can see the picking the safety. I can see the picking the third or fourth round. Yeah, well corners, you can never have too many corners. I mean just after one in the first round last year. I swear to you, next round we'll pick one every year. Why not? I'd say they move up to pick a rusher. I think they'll move down. I don't think they'll move down a lot. I think because the difference between the end of the first and the second beginning of the second You know five or six picks I think they'll do it because one it'll give them more time to look at the board and figure out what they want to do
02 Jake: Because you get a whole day. Remember you get 24 hours down between first and second rounds. That's huge Like you can do a lot of evaluating And if you weren't able to smart enough to move down between 30th and 1st in the second round, you get a whole day, you're the next pick, you have basically first shot, all the time the world would come at it. So I think that's what they're going to do. And then on second day, they'll pick up another pick for it. Then I think in the second, they'll start swapping those picks. But my prediction is they move down. And I think they'll pick up one of these guys, but I think they'll know that the two guys after them basically the Packers and the Steelers don't want this guy, right? If they know that they can trade with the first round, if they can trade with, I guess it's the Panthers, right? Panthers have first pick in the second round. They can trade with them, know that they don't want, maybe they've already picked the defensive tackle, that they'll trade down out of that spot, know that the Steelers and Green Bay don't want it, and they'll get the guy that they want, but they'll get picks for it as well. A little bit of a shake and bake, AKA, the Patriots. That's my prediction. Alright, then how many, the second question is how many picks will the Jets end up with at the end of the day? years we've gone in with three. That's the least we've ever gotten. Three. Three guys. Three players. So six draft picks, we're gonna end up with three guys. Three, yeah that's crazy. That would that would mean we would almost trade away everything to move around. We're gonna move Justin: up in the first. Yeah so you move a couple picks. And you know they'll end up with like that first, fourth, and then a sixth. That'd be a boring draft. The draft is always boring. No, the draft is awesome. No. Jake: in the command center sauce. The draft is always boring. Justin: Stick to that. You'll be okay. Jake: Um, yeah, I think more like five. I think five. I think you also see I think you see a trade in there somewhere. Sure. Yeah. Justin: There's no trading players though. Jake: Right? Yeah, I don't know. Again with the rules Justin: The rules don't Another team. Well, didn't it is that what happened with Eli? Yeah, I mean they they pick he got picked number one by San Diego They didn't know they were in trade him But then the Giants picked Phil Rivers and then they traded that's the way it went Jake: I think they traded the first spot out. No, they trade. I think they don't take them Justin: He was wearing a San Diego hat. Oh, I'm never gonna play for you Jake: That's funny Alright, last question. So you think three, so I say we're gonna come up with five guys. You think three, that's three. So I say five, you say three. So, uneven numbers, good. More offense or defense?
06 Jake: All defense. All defense. Justin: Literally not one offensive player, unless it's a lineman. Jake: Really. Really. So next big fat guy. Just ask for your 6th round, pick a big... Justin: Maybe we'll pick like an offensive lineman that turns into a defensive tackle. Jake: What? The magic of... Justin: Brandon Moore, our right guard. He was a defensive player in college. Jake: So you think all defense? I agree. If I'm saying they're walking with 5 players, I think you'll see... Three of the five will be defense. Yep. All right, so the name's a position and defense event you're gonna see a linebacker Justin: Oh, yeah, definitely probably a defensive tackle and maybe a safety. I think you'll see a safety in there. Yeah Jake: What about kicking kicking It's fine. What a new gym. We should go pick a second rounder for new gym, whatever So interesting just want to read off some So I found this online, recent number 30 picks. So it's kind of cool. So I'm going down the years. So these guys are pretty good. Yeah, so in 2010 the 30th pick, Running Back Job at Best of the Lions. 2009 it was Kenny Britt, the wide receiver. Again, these are named players. 2008 Dustin Keller yes so okay 2007 Craig David Davis. You could call him a boss. Yeah he's 30. And 2006 Josepha Dye so that's out of those 30 picks out of those five picks in the last three or five years on the 30th pick four of them are you know still in the league. Four of them is still in the league. One of them's household name, one of them's becoming pretty good. John Best is, you know, moving up. He was- Justin: Well, we got some injury issues. I think Eddie Britt's really good. Jake: All right. I think that's it. Wow, only 40 minutes in and I think we're all done. Do you have anything else you want to discuss? That was really only 40 minutes. Yeah, only 40 minutes. It felt like longer. It felt like longer. That's not good. We need to give our listeners and audience a little bit more flavor. You kind of want it to feel shorter. Well, we're just not going to do a mock draft. That's the problem. We're not just doing mockety mock. There's too many of them out there. I look at all of them. And I think we say this every year, is that this big 109th podcast. Is that there's just way too many variables. Yes, we know whatever what they're looking for but where that guy falls I trust in tenet bomb. I think he's done a great job, you know other than burning Galston, which is pretty much his his worst pick ever Which I know he blames mangled for an unangled man genie for Who you know, what's Ben? Do you do it now? Yeah, he'll be an analyst. Yeah, he'll be an analyst He's such a good talker. He should be out there analyzing. I agree. So, um, so I think that's it. You know, let's go football.
01 Jake: We'll maybe come back tomorrow if we got some time and maybe do a little day one recap. Rock and sock of football. Yeah, football's coming. This is the best. This is the best time of year. I love it. They launched the season. The season schedule is my favorite. That's what I know is going to happen the most of the year. And then the draft gets you all psyched up. And then basically between the draft and training camp, it's like this big, dull moment of nothingness. Like, you know, you hear about people throwing up in off-season workouts and all that kind of crap. It's not so fun. Alrighty, well that's it!
