18 Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. The longest running New York Jets podcast ever. I'm Jake, and joining me, 314 times in a row, 14, good number, like it, is Justin. Justin, how you doing? I got it. There you go. Took me a minute. Less than a minute. It is early. It's super early. We're still drinking coffee. You're only halfway through your coffee. Not even. Justin: Remember when we used to drink beer on this show? That was not, you know, this time in the morning. but yeah Jake: That was a thing. We would like open up a beer. Cheers. Have a beer. I wonder if those were better or worse. Justin: They're probably better. Better days. Jake: Well, some of them, but you know what? Better days are ahead. They are, my friend. Here we go. Alright, so in this episode we're going to talk about the draft, give some draft grades, talk a little about... what's happening in the news and the OTAs and that's it. So we'll start off with, why don't we start off with the draft which was, wow, was it, I guess like two, three weeks ago, two weeks ago? Typical NFL draft, this year hosted in Nashville. I was lucky enough to go down to the draft. Saw two, no, it was all three days. I was there Thursday, Friday, Saturday, I left Saturday night. I just want to first say for everybody out there who is a NFL fan or a fan of the Jets or whatever Put in your calendar right now next year April let's call it end of April The draft will be in Vegas. It's going to be super fun like Nashville was amazing. I've been in Nashville before I've been there with you actually Justin: Texans? Sorry, not the Texans. Titans. See now if I made that mistake you'd be like, what you don't even know your team. Tried to go there but I got there first. Yeah wow that was that happened. Yeah yeah that team that plays. So we had we Jake: had a great time but I will tell you it was like that. but a thousand times better. I just want just for people who have never been to the draft. So I used to go to the draft and been to the draft in Radio City Music Hall. Great New York. I went I think twice, two years. Um, I think Mo Wilk was one year and I forgot who we picked the other year. Uh, so super fun, but it's really contained within this, within the Radio City. All the fun is in there and out in the streets, eh, it's New York. And that's fine, they have some flags around, but it's not a thing.
01 Jake: Then they moved to Chicago, I think they did two years of Chicago last year they did, and then they did Philly, then I think they did Dallas last year. But Nashville, the part of it that was amazing, 600,000 people showed up. And it just took over the city. And here's the fun part. So I go to a lot of games and you go to a lot of games. You walk around and I was throwing on my new, you know, black darnold, you know, Jetsters, it was awesome. The vibe is so positive and fun because all the fans are there. You're there to enjoy the football and the draft, but there's very little like, You're not there to beat a team, you know, not teams in the playoffs. Everybody's kind of on the same plane. You know, obviously people have higher draft picks or whatever, but everybody was out of their mind dressed up, kids, family. And so you just kind of wandered through this amazing event. of all these people hanging out, and then everything was about all the teams. So then everywhere you went, when the NFL like did up a thing, like they had the NFL experience, which my wife and I spent, I don't know, like two hours walking around, they had all these things you could do and a museum and games you could play. And it was just, it was so much fun. Again, And Nashville is a fun city. I will tell you, Vegas will be amazing. I predict, here's my prediction, over a million people go to the NFL draft in Vegas. And I will be one of them because it is just super fun. And you just get to be an NFL fan and have it be fun. And so wherever the pick next year in the first round, don't care. Hoping pretty low. But. it will be a blast. So thanks to Nash Vegas. Next year is in Vegas. Everybody should go. If you're a Jets fan, go. It is so much fun. Buy your gear, show up, walk around the city, and it's gonna be that'll be stunning because you got Vegas in the background. They'll probably set it up somewhere amazing. Huge stage. I mean the stage was beautiful. Again. Congrats everybody and it was even bad weather like the first night was pouring down But still a lot of fun. So sorry, that's my draft thing. Then we got in the actual draft All right, let's talk about the actual draft we went in with I think we went in with six picks Yeah, we then traded around a to K-lot Yeah down back up down around Justin: Yeah, moving basically like kind of just and into the fifth.. Do you want to do jets or do you want to do something? What happened with the Cardinals there? Yeah, well that's what that affects us.
00 Justin: The Cardinals did was asinine. Okay, a complete joke. Wow. That GM should not have been allowed to make that pick. Jake: Well, he made he's really good picking first round. Yeah, he's great at it. Yeah, let him do it a couple years in a row. Yeah, keep going. I mean Justin: I would understand if like, Kyler Murray was far and away, 100% the absolute best player in the draft. Right, like an- That was not the case. Jake: Like an Andrew Luck type of player. Justin: Yeah. Jake: Right, like a once in a lifetime, what we think Sam will be, but whatever. Justin: Yeah, even if he was like Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield, but by all accounts, he's good, but he wasn't considered the best player in the draft. Jake: Not unanimously, no. Justin: Well, no, he wasn't considered the best player in the draft at all. Like if you're just saying best player in the draft, a lot of people are saying we got the best player in the draft. Right. They've been saying that about us forever. But anyway, I think it's completely asinine to allow a general manager to pick a I quarterback in the first round. two years in a row, especially in the top 10. Yep, two years in a row. After firing the coach, that was only there for a year. So, paint the or draw the analogy to the Rams. and then picking Jared Goff and him looking like a complete and utter nightmare his rookie year. Garbage. Like really bad. Jake: Like, who didn't know- what was it? Didn't know where the sunset? Didn't know anything. Justin: Like... Well, forget where the sunset, that's just being stupid, but... Oh, I don't want that in my player. Well, whatever, if you can wing it, you can wing it. Like, you know, he didn't know how to huddle. Fine. Jake: Yeah. Justin: But he had Jeff Fisher as a head coach and Jeff Fisher's not really a good head coach. Like it just isn't. He's a 500 head coach through and through. He made the Super Bowl once and like basically got a free pass forever after that. But. As soon as the new coach came in, it was like, oh, Jared Goff's good, he's actually really good shit. He's excellent. Is it possible that. You know you realize that you needed to fire the coach you brought in an offensive mind Like is it possible that you just really? Overreacted way too quickly to a guy that you traded up for last year You like to not money you know that you traded up to get him And then you are willing to trade him away for almost nothing Jake: I
01 Jake: Wanna do that or when they were hiring it wait hold on but hold on hold on wait or when they were hiring him He said conditionally like there's the only way I could think it would get went down cuz he should not have been hired then But but then okay, then then then the general managers Justin: It's like I I will take this job only if that guy that you just picked number 10 overall for your court to be your Quarterback of the future is not the court why why can't he say that? Jake: He can. I wouldn't hire the guy. Justin: Well, but they did, and that's the truth. They made. I mean, that is really, really poor management. Jake: True. Yeah, this, well, this is what I think this is fun. I actually love this. I love everything about it because I love that we have the three in the ASEs now. Justin: The end of it is they trade like all their trade trades out the window as soon as they make the pick. Right. Right, so they make the pick and then it's like, haha, you guys are stuck. Jake: But they weren't stuck I don't know, there's a sin, like, I'll go back to the RG3. They should have kept it. The RG3, right, you get them for nothing, you already paid all the money, the dolphins, well it looked like you kind of like a haha, realized that the dolphins don't have to pay the front monies, the $1 million signing. Justin: But the Dolphins are a bad team and they probably could have used the pick although hey backup quarterback Not even starting quarterback like shouldn't you consider this guy to be a starting quarterback? Well, I'll compete with fits. I want you to go in the way back machine. Let's do the way back machine Jake: Let's go back to last year's draft. Let's go this guy. That's right Baker Mayfield The Giants are not run by a bunch of monkeys and they go you know, they're back and forth, but I think most people had it Sam Rosen Mayfield. Justin: I still think that this is very... They really should have held on to him. Yeah. In a my opinion, the Cardinals. Because... Jake: Wait, this guy comes out and just breaks his leg in pre-season. Justin: There's a lot of scenarios. Murray could break his, Iike. Murray could also be terrible. There's that too, right? He could just not be good. Right. Just like, hey, you just gave up on Rosen after a year. Yep. Like this guy can be just as bad. They have no weapons elsewhere, right? Jake: They have Fitz and Johnson. Justin: Fitz is like a million, and they have Johnson who last year couldn't do anything because the quarterback's a rookie and we're gonna stack the line on you. Jake: Well remember, they didn't have the rookie quarterback last year. They started with... Well they did. Who'd they start with? Justin: Yeah but Bradford got injured in the first game.
01 Justin: So Rosen played almost the whole year. Jake: And... Justin: The other reason to keep him is, again, you don't know what he's going to be yet. Like he's nowhere close. Like in three years, the guy can be really good. Like you picked him so high for a reason. Jake: RJ3 cousins. They picked the guy number one and then the fourth round. Stacked another guy. They grabbed another guy. Justin: That's the one who's still starting in the league. Right. In all the bucks. Jake: Exactly. So you have, again... If you're the Cardinals and you're like, this is our number one world, and this is the game beater of the white, why not? You., you've already paid the money. He's on a rookie quarter contract. Why not just keep him? Or for fuck's sake, wait. And someone comes in and off, you should at least gotten back a first. Like there's no reason to get back, not at first. Justin: A quarterback, just like what happened last year with Teddy Bridgewater. Right? Right. You could have done the Teddy Bridgewater play with Josh Rosen. Yep. I know you got a second, but you probably could have gotten a first. Jake: Three quarterbacks will be hurt in the in the in the preseason. And yeah, and one of them will be a major player and someone will be looking for. Justin: Have a real backup. Right. And they'll be like, oh, crap. Right. Jake: And then they'll be willing to give him a first. So I find I'll give my first next year. Right. Justin: Because it's like, oh, our whole season. Jake: Yeah, and you get to I would roll them out in just like we do with bread water. Yeah, roll them out in preseason Let him play let him play and hope he looks good. Yeah, and if he does look good then good. It's a competition Justin: Yeah, then have the competition Jake: Yeah, Kyler Kyler can sit back for a year and they could one off each other and if one gets hurt one Justin: I don't know. It's just you're right. It's galactic stupid. It was dumb to me and It is fun for us because now we do have Donald and Alan and Rosen all and Brady. Yeah, so we basically have, you know, combined the best starting four quarterbacks in football. Jake: We have three number ones and a number six. Justin: We have like, what, we have nine Super Bowl appearances. Jake: That's all in one guy. No, but that is six rings. That is fun. Justin: We're just crushing it. That is super fun for us. Yeah, we get to like have these whole careers hopefully yeah And maybe they battle it out for years to come and we it's like merino and and Jim Kelly and Ken O'Brien Yeah, hopefully we just hope Which one do you want out of that? I guess I take merino Jake: Well, I think those guys I would have taken Kelly if you want to I think merino is like the most Justin: Talent for Super Bowl appearances versus one he had the better team but merino is like the better he was a better player Jake: But I mean, I don't to take them I take them I take the four losses Justin: That's what I'm saying you take Kelly then no, I would take what that team did not necessarily Jim Kelly Well, also Jim Kelly is like their guy damn merino played in that run-and-shoot style he would have thrown for like 8,000 yards. Jake: All right so number two easy off the board the safest pick in the entire draft.
00 Justin: So one second. Yep. It just didn't happen for us he didn't drop. Jake: Yeah I just I just didn't seem like there was a way to to have him drop. Um yeah the Niners were just. Let's just talk about other things we're gonna get back to our draft and then just talk about it extensively. Then there's the number six pick. where the Giants pick Daniel Jones, where the fun videos of people, our super fan, who we sat here with him in this room where he said if they draft the court, and he now reverses it, but I remember him saying if they draft after trading away ODB, if they draft a quarterback in the first round, I'm gonna never talk to that team ever again. And they went and did it. Justin: He was very unhappy. And now he's come around, now it's like, I see it, I now understand. I don't understand why that guy was the pick. Jake: Well, Duke, a lot of great quarterbacks have come out of Duke. Justin: I guess. Jake: No, no. Zero? No. Well, name all the NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks that are out of Duke. Justin: I mean... Bobby Hurley, I you know, like there's there's no Bobby Hurley, Christian Leitner, perhaps. I don't get it. I don't get it. I know, you know, it seems so weird because it just goes to show that last year they did make a big mistake because of last year they would have picked Darnold. Yeah. Then this year. Let's just say they still have a record. They could have picked anything anybody but they back themselves into picking this quarterback. Yep, and They picked this quarterback because this quarterback playing at Duke There's a very tight connection between the Manning family and the coach at Duke The Manning family work out at Duke, right? Eli, they do their camp at Duke. They do the manning like QB camp, whatever thing at Duke. That coach is like kind of like their own like little personal coach, whatever. So Eli, I guess felt very comfortable with this guy coming in and probably wouldn't mind handing the torch to this guy. Jake: If you're listening to your quarterback about who you pick in the draft, like as your replacement. Justin: But don't you feel like the Giants could have picked him at 17? Jake: Yep, definitely. Justin: And didn't they trade back in and pick another first round pick? Like couldn't they have picked him at any point really? Jake: No one really had this guy going anywhere in the first round. Justin: Considering he went before Haskins and then Haskins went to Washington, I think that they're gonna regret that one. Jake: This one just feels like... Justin: Yeah, again, NFC now has these same thing that they have seized house so the NFC has Haskins and I can't remember this guy's name this Duke Schmo Jones Jones Pretty sure okay. That's why it's Daniel Jones Daniel Jones very miles white bread name you ever heard anyway
00 Justin: So Daniel Jones and Haskins are rookies together and Dak and Wentz were rookies together like four years ago. Right. So they're like four years, four seasons apart. But you've got these like rookie classes in the divisions in the NFC East and the AFC East, which is fun because we see a lot of AFC and NFC East games. Being on the East Coast and we play it when we happen to play them this year So let's hope that he's Daniel Jones is starting but I don't plan that I hope you I starting That's true you'll be starting especially without Odella or you can't just I don't know just everything since the time since the Jake: Ownership allowed that other coach whoever make make McAdoo Mackinac gonna be here anymore ever since they allowed him to bench Eli, in that game, this started this wave of stupidity that they have still not woken up from. Justin: And I can't get it. Dave Gettleman just doesn't make sense to me. Jake: Oh, but he likes the hog mollies. That's his big thing. He likes hog mollies. Justin: He doesn't make sense to me. Yeah, I get it. Barkoo is a game changer. and you wanted to pick that guy. Jake: Don't your scouts look at the draft ahead of a year ahead? Isn't everybody talking about next year actually being another great QB? Justin: Next year there's like three guys next year and two of them honestly are... I don't think they're that good. I don't think they're being NFL quarterbacks. The guy in Alabama, Tua, and the guy out in Oregon. I think the guy that people are going to want is the kid out of Georgia who played in, as a true freshman, played in the championship game. He played really well. Last year five quarterbacks Jake: out of the first round. This year three. Yeah next year there'll be more. Right. Anyway, so anyway, let's just forget everybody else. I mean nothing else I thought was really... Justin: The Giants are gonna pick a first round quarterback next year. That's my prediction. Jake: And then trade this guy to somebody else. No, they'll just keep them. Just keep them. Well, that's...they're so smart. All right, let's talk about our picks. So it came to three. This was, again, I think you even made the comment on the podcast, which I repeated a lot. This is the guy we have picked a ton of times. Justin: Yeah, this is the fourth time we've picked this guy in the last 10 years. Jake: Same guy. I mean, talent-wise, this might be the best of all of them. Maybe I've seen his tape but Quinnen Williams comes to the Jets the third pick Everybody was saying this is the you know, we were trying to trade down we had offers on the table But it just there was no there was no either game changer or there was hey, this is the best guy Don't waste a three on not the best guy. And, you know, again, am I ecstatic about the pick? Am I like just thinking, wow, this is a game changer? No, I think this is someone that better be on the field first and better be making, better be making, hey, it better be like, holy shit, look at Williams and Williams. And that's the hope. You have these two Williams's now and maybe you can't double them both.
00 Jake: And it's gonna be. tough and some of them are gonna get through for me the bar for him is like eight sacks Nine sacks. He better have nine sacks. He better be dominating. I don't if he can do that quarter pressure Well, that's sort of his thing. He's just massive guy who has he's super quick and can get through That's that's what I'm hoping and just no running no running at him. Yeah blocking passes the whole thing So what do you think what's your grade on that one? Justin: I mean it was kind of uninspiring if you ask me but because once again We pick the best player available and like maybe the best player in the draft maybe but For once I'd like to see us pick for need Like we need an edge rusher, right? So Josh Allen was the one that like who dropped to seven by the way Which is weird. Who cares if he's good. He's good. Like we happen to pick third So what if you pick if he went sevens like so what? We pick third pick the guy that you need Don't just pick like the best player always like we've been doing that and now you've got another guy who doesn't Necessarily fit because you got Leonard Williams. What is Leonard Williams? You got Henry Anderson? What is Henry Anderson? You've got this guy what well, we know what he is. He's gonna play inside But like remember when we had Leonard Williams Muhammad, Wilkerson snacks and Sheldon Richardson. Yeah all four The only way the four of them could be on the field at the same time is if Sheldon Richardson lined up as a fucking linebacker Yeah, and it was terrible right because he couldn't cover work He couldn't cover and he wasn't fast enough from the outside to get to the quarterback. He's an inside rush here. So Jake: Well, we don't have that we have yeah, but who the fuck like Justin: Why didn't we just pick alan unless they knew that this guy that we picked in the road was like? unless they know something that no one else knows. Jake: Well, this is what this is people. Again, let's just go to there are people on the staff. I think the staff I'm just gonna it's 10 to 20 people whose job it is to not to study and go to games and interview and talk to coaches all year on while we're watching NFL football. They're never watching NFL football. They're watching college. Justin: They're this guy played at Florida. The third pick. Jake: Yeah, like. Justin: Everybody's seen him play. He's a Florida. Jake: He had, right. But I'm saying this is their job to evaluate these people. So if you're gonna say, if polite, I guess it's polite, if polite ends up being a total bust, yeah, then the Queen and William's pick seems stupid. If polite ends up being good, then you kinda got both. You got these two- Justin: Just reminds me of like picking Jordan Jenkins in the third and being like- Yeah, like we picked Aaron Lee and then we picked Jenkins because he's gonna play outside. He's gonna be the edge guy and it's like, well he's a third round pick.
03 Justin: Maybe he's good, maybe he's not. Jake: Well this guy fell, so polite fell because he had I guess a couple things. One his combine he didn't, he wasn't maybe in shape or whatever. We didn't have a great combine. Then there's some stories that maybe his attitude wasn't so great at the combine and that people didn't like that he was kind of, I don't know, maybe just talking stuff up or not just having great interviews. But from a talent on the field, people were very high on him. Again, before combining, before his sort of interviews, the town on the field. Justin: Oh, Greg Williams will kick his ass. So let's hope. Jake: So, what do you give Quinn and Williams as a... Justin: It's gonna a bad but like I have to give that a B. Yeah, like I can't give that an A because I don't while he may be the best player in the draft and he may be Really just yeah, but like literally the best player and certainly the best player available at that moment Wish that we would have just said we don't need the best player available We need the best player at the position that we need the most and just done it right But they didn't and last year that worked out because we needed the quarterback and we picked the best quarterback available right, that's what we did and that's what we're gonna do and That's how it went I'll give this a B, Quinn and William. Jake: I'll give it a B plus just because I like walking away with, I like walking away with, with what everybody's saying is, again, the best. Not an A. It's, you know, B seems kind of middle. Justin: Now let me ask you, Leonard Williams was the best player in that draft. Yeah. But he's not, right? Not of that draft, no. But at the moment when we drafted him, it's like, whoa, the Jets just got the steal of the draft. They got the best player in the draft. Yes. But he's not no Jake: Later, but it almost never happens it never happens that the best player in the draft at the draft days can still consider the best Justin: Player that draft because right why I pick the best player in the draft Jake: Well, I not pick what you need be well because you don't want to end up picking an edge rusher You know go to pick an edge rusher on the first round third pick and have him be a Goulston Justin: What I mean is, if Well also remember Williams, there's also a Williams picking Einbahn. Jake: Williams isn't... this also is a Williams replacement. So you got two things in here. You got a year with this as Williams and Williams. By Williams. Williams and Williams and Williams. And then this could be the Williams replacement. Justin: I get it. I know that... He's on the last year of his contract. So that's, okay fine. Jake: So that means you're picking, so you're not, so you are picking a little bit for me. So you got to give him a little something because this is the need. Because if William Williams gets traded away or we don't sign him, next, he's gone. So then we have his replacement. And maybe 10 times better than he is. Great. All right, so give it to me. Then second round pick, we picked Sam Donald. Yeah, sure. Well, we always like to give that as a thing. We picked Sam. We picked half of Sam, or one third of Sam. A third of Sam Donald. That's fine. We picked his right arm. And then in the
02 Jake: third round... Picked it. J'kai polite can't be polite cannot be to pronounce polite Yeah, so this is the most traditional edge rusher, so I think you got both again, these two picks are gonna be evaluated together because if One if this guy is just trash and an Alan turns out to be really good Then this is it then this is a trash fire If these two are good, and this third round pick was like, oh, he dropped because of other reasons, but his talent is great and he gets coached up, which is what we always say. It's like you take someone and you coach them up. That's why the best player in the draft is not always the best player later, is because what team they went to? Did they go to a trash fire team or did they go to a well coached team by a well coached? individual put in the place and given the position to win. That's why players can go and be terrible people and on 31 teams and then they go to one team and they win Super Bowls and then they then go away from that team and then they're terrible again. And you're like what happened? Their coach. The Patriots. And the system and all the other stuff. So this is the one I think it's just going to be interesting to watch. Little bit, you know the map that we go after defense in the last 10 years was like one year we went offense last year That's it. That's it one year offense Then so this to me this is like This is like a B minus it has an upside but these two picks I think are gonna be connected together for us because if If one of them goes, if this one does not turn out to be something, and in two years, this is going to look like a totally different draft than it is. If both these guys are good, then we did a great job. We got a great guy and a replacement and the edge rusher we needed. Alright, and then in the third round... Justin: I don't need to give a grade. Jake: Yeah, whatever, give a grade. You don't really have a grade, so you don't really actually have a grade. Justin: You know, I do want to go back to the Quinn & Williams for two seconds. I was watching live a lot of the pre-draft stuff leading in, like an hour or two before I started watching it. They had an interview with Quinn and Williams. He has a really, really touching story. He lost his mother very young. He talked about her and how she's the driving force. He really... knows that he's making her proud. Like it was very touching. And then he's telling the story and then they kind of switch gears with whoever's interviewing him. And they started just, I don't know, getting onto lighter topics. And he I'm watching this live and he sneezes. Jake: Yes, that's that's him. Justin: I'm dying on the couch. It's a chew. He goes bless you. Thank you That continues and I'm dying by myself just sitting there on the couch I paused it rewound it made sure I I saw what I thought I saw
01 Justin: Recorded like my TV with my phone and sent it to friends I was like look at this frick. and then of course we draft them And of course he's a jet. I'm like, later on in the night, I'm like, of course that idiot is a fucking jet now. Because you had to say that. Jake: If you said, look at this really polite individual, that he not only blesses himself, but then thanks himself. Justin: I was like, look at this moron who sneezes, blesses himself, and thanks himself. Who does that? A very nervous individual. Yes, he was certainly nervous. Jake: Super, super nervous. Justin: That's not a good sign, by the way. Jake: No, I he's a character guy which which is interesting because sometimes we don't also character guys big Justin: Big big fan of as we go through here, Alabama, Florida this neck pick USC We don't have the small school pick this year like the last Records is a d1 school in a real school. All right We remember our third round pick last year Shepherd out of like Nowheresville school, it's like, oh, he lit up the senior bowl. But then he had a Jake: Anyway, let's keep going. We'll see how it works out. Justin: So we'd like to tackle, huh? Jake: Yeah. Got it. Got it. I talked with Sam. Like, they're on the same team. Justin: They should have been. Only one year apart. Jake: Tumma, Edogga. By the way, the names this year, very challenging. Tumma. Tumma. I-doga? Chuma? Chuma? Chuma? Chuma I-doga? Comma? Offensive, no. Offensive tackle, USC. Um... I need... Justin: I'm getting a jersey with duck butter on the back. Jake: You should. Make sure you get it in Gotham green. Uh, Chuma I-doga? Oh, by the way, I went to the NFL shop. You can buy, you know, there's like different versions of the jerseys. I went to get the Well, I bought for the draft and just wanted something quick, so I bought the, like, whatever, paint-on, paint-by-numbers version. How much is the Brandon Marshall jersey? Justin: It's like $4 now. Jake: But then I went to try to find, because there's the real, they call them the game jerseys, they have all these things, Elite, Elite Player, blah blah blah. The $300 version. I need that one. I went to find it. I went, didn't see it on NFL Shop, or didn't see it on Thistat, and I went to the NFL Shop, and I'm like, did these even exist anymore? I'm like thinking, maybe they don Hre Found it for every other team and then I went to scroll down and then the jets were crossed off Justin: Are they sold out or they don't exist? They don't exist. Yeah, okay Jake: Just as a note to every every marketing person the planet make them exist. Don't don't want your brand Without the the jersey there. We need the merge They had all the other merge there a lot of it looked like last-minute tacked on it was just like again. It wasn't like a lot new But that's the number one.
00 Jake: You got to get the jerseys, the big jerseys, the big money makers. Those things cost like six dollars to make. You sell them for three hundred. Justin: They only cost ten bucks because we get them from China for 20. Jake: Let's see if China can pick it up because China get on there. Justin: Get on it. Let's go. I'll tell you, I am very much out of personal note. No anniversary? Jake: Is it? It is. Is it? And yesterday. Did you get married yesterday? And today? Yes. Both. No. Let's not. No. Let's not. Justin: We're winning anniversary. Nope. Let's just say it. No. You wished me a happy anniversary. Second anniversary. Anyway. Yeah. So yesterday I got gift one. Pretty cool. Signed. 1996 World Series Baseball by Mariano Rivera. Nice. That's really cool. I really, really loved it. Jake: I think I saw that. Did you? I saw some of that. I was a little bit in your gift bag. Oh, were you? Justin: So, today... There is a box in my apartment. My wife's not very good at this because I get all the boxes There's a box from like the NFL There's some jet stuff. I'm getting today. I can't wait to see what is in that box. You probably know what's in that box Jake: I maybe helped approve or disapprove these things. Justin: Good, so I know I'm getting some good stuff. We'll see. Thank you. So I can't wait till later. I'm going to open up a box full of jet stuff, which is super cool. Jake: All right, so Chuma, I don't know anything about this guy. Justin: I also, I read up a little bit. He's a tackle. He played right tackle in college, which to me means he's going to probably end up being a guard. Yeah. So. Love. You should pick an offensive lineman every- combined together forever. That's the only thing that out of this draft and,- of and I Jake: Not a decade, not a decade in the ending. on the Jets? No, because in five years we'll have to pay him 40 billion dollars and we'll let him go.
01 Justin: But he could be. I mean they paid Mo Wilk, Mo Wilk was supposed to be but his production fell off. Jake: Yeah he's still a free agent by the way, he's out there. I mean it's ten years now. Why didn't we pick up uh, uh, Onza? Onza's been out there, he was, why didn't we sign him? They just Justin: signed, I think C.O.P. signed him. Maybe you just didn't like him in terms of like... Jake: Because that was one of the guys that was like... Justin: Why Jake: I'm Actually, besides Sam Darnold, I'm actually most excited about her in this year. It's gonna be good. You watch his tape from last year and what he did. He makes awesome catches. He makes awesome keys. Like he could be. I know I don't want to get great, but he could be that guy. Like he's a tight end. Like a good tight end. Who can catch the ball. Justin: A legitimate ball. Jake: Just like when I predicted that Amaro would be amazing. Yes, you love Jason. I love Jason Maro. Justin: He's so good at catching the ball. Jake: He's so good. Justin: - to that was made because Leveon Bell is on the roster. Really don't make the ambellos not on the roster right? Why do you need this guy? I mean SIX FORT This guy's gonna line up as a blocking Titan yeah might line up slightly in the backfield a little bit He might line up in. In line up wherever you need him to line up And he's just gonna knock people over. And he's gonna play special teams, and he's gonna knock people around. Yep. I love this pick in the fourth round. And, but the also- It's the exact thing that you should do in the fourth round. Pick a versatile guy who makes your team better, and who will replace Eric Tomlinson, who's not very good. Jake: And he will get- and he GASH the ball- So, it's not like- It's not like he'll never catch the ball. He's- he's not- it's not his specialty. There's some Looking at his tape Click! Justin: I think this guy's a good pick. Jake: Blake Cashman, this is a special teams written all over. Justin: This guy is the Darren Lee replacement. Great. Because they had a high grade on this guy. They really like Blake Cashman.
02 Justin: He's definitely a special teamer and I think he might get on the field. Yeah. Jake: Yeah, it'll see if he like picks up the defense, if he can. You know, he's scrappy guy. I mean, he's not he's not tiny. He's we went for some good value here. He's 6 to 235 That's kind of an interesting pick. I don't think anybody loved this like, okay But at this point you're you these are just crapshoes a tackle machine at minnesota Justin: So, I mean if you're and that's a big conference team And he was by all accounts an excellent linebacker. So I'm all about it. I like it. I like, I like what he did in the fourth and the fifth here. The sixth. This is just a total, total flyer. Jake: We do this every year. We pick a corner way down in the fifth, sixth, seventh round. And you just don't know them and they show up and they have some number on them. And you're like, who the fuck is that guy? Justin: Who's this guy? I again this was a well this was a this was a serious throw the throw the throw the dart at the board and see what sticks because This guy Has torn his acl two years in a row. Oh jesus. So By all accounts if he hadn't yeah played four games in two years Oh, he would he's a he's a way more talented player than a sixth round pick, but he has some Injuries right but you tear your acl, you know They fix it. It's fixed. So, you know, it's it's fixed you go in with six you come out you gotta come out with three Jake: Starters three starters who make a difference not just people who are on the field and don't make a difference Justin: I think we have two of those guys. I think we have 2.5. I think we have I think we have one Guaranteed, I think it's gonna disrupt things. That's when in yeah, right. Quinnen is gonna start and play and play a lot. Yep Then polite. Jake: He's the point five. Justin: He's gonna probably start. Yeah. Jake: Probably. You're a third round pick. Justin: I don't know. He may start, he may not. Depends if he's good or not. It also depends what kind of defense they're playing. Jake: Right. Justin: And then I'm assuming Wesko's gonna add some value. And Cashman will add some value on special teams, and I think that's probably about all you're getting, because I don't think the tackle of DOGA is gonna play unless a bunch of people get injured. That's the project kind of in the third round, and I don't know if this guy Austin will even make the team. Jake: Right. That's kind of where I'm... That's the sixth rounder. I'm a little worried about this draft, is you get... You just can't look at it and go, yeah, there's one guaranteed blue chip guy, fine. He's going to play because he's going to play. Yeah. And then the other guy's like, OK, they all have these questions with them. I think probably Wes goes the one that there isn't a question. They will slot him in. They have a role. He has a role. Justin: He has a role. A defined like this is what this guy does. Yep. And we will figure out. We drafted him to figure out how to use him.
00 Jake: Yeah. And he's going to block a lot. Justin: Clearly, Gace wants. wants a player like that on the team. I think I will say though, I do feel as though three years from now we'll look back and five of the six of these players will actually be on the team. Jake: Five of the six will be on the team. That's then we would have broken the draft because that that's an amazing stat. That's not even like go back. Justin: I think three years from now all of these guys except for maybe Austin will be on the team. Jake: All right, let's get what? Justin: 2016 1717 17 right? Yep, 2017 New York Jets draft. I'm going Usually Wikipedia is really good. Oh, I usually do Jake: The pro football one. Pro football has a good, has a good, I actually have it in my other browser, sorry. Justin: Well, in 2017, we picked Jamal Adams. Okay. Marcus May. But that's not three years, that's two years, it's 19. That's two seasons, this would be the third season. Okay, all right. That's what I'm saying. All right. Three years from now, which is now, fine. Jamal Adams is still on the team. . Marcus may still on the team found my link yet our Darius Stewart not on the team. Nope Chat hands is not on the team leg it on the team. Yep, and Dylan Donahue Don't think so don't think he's on the team wires on the team A lot of wires on the team Jeremy Clark is on the team easy. Yeah, and so is Derek Jones. That's six guys Jake: They're still I think you have to go back one year and I'll go back here before and that's where it gets Justin: Deremy still on the team Jake: But not good, like that was a mistake. Justin: What was a mistake? Jake: Eh, he's not. He didn't turn into the blue chip first round guy that he should have. Hackover is gone. Justin: Hackover is gone. Jordan Jenkins on the team playing. Jake: Yeah. Justin: Burris, not. Nope. Brandon Shell starting right tackle. Lock Edwards still there as a punter. Trump peak still there. That's five. Is he still on the team? Yes. Special teams gunner. That's five guys from the 2016 draft. They're still on the team. Jake: Oh, I see. In this one, if they're if they're no, that's not the way it is. Justin: Anyway, if you want to go the year before even 2015, Leonard Williams still on the team. Yep. Darren Smith, Devin Smith, not even in the NFL. Jesus. Malden, not even in the NFL. Bryce Petty, not in the NFL. Jarvis Harrison No Dion Simon. No one guy left for one guy. I think Dion Simon might still be on the team Jake: And then the next year there's a billion. That was the that was the end take 12. Yeah, I don't think anybody right a noon Justin: Wow, a noon one dozier dozier. Okay- Right, but two out of 12 picks and some of these guys are not even in the NFL at all Yeah. Anyway, so, all right. So not so I think five of these guys, the first
02 Justin: side that we picked will be on the team in three years. This is a good year to Jake: find out whether whether things like, you know, Trenton Canon of last year, Perry Nicholson of last year. We got that. Those guys can do right. Of course, had shepherd last year. Yes. Right. So now that's the line. Justin: I don't get it Shepherds a backup now But that's what you did. It's a third round pick like this guy polite might be a backup next year Like he might not play this year, right? You don't know Never know he might not even fit Once he gets in there. It's like wait this guy can't play in this in this defensive system Jake: Why does this site have a Chosse Gardner Johnson listed as a pick we picked this year? I don't know. In the fourth round. Mistake. Okay. Justin: We've got a bad website. Jake: That's, I'm on profile reference. It's one of the best. Bad websites. Websites. All right, cool. Overall, what do you think? Justin: It was a fun draft. I watched, actually watched a little more of this than I usually watch. That's texting pictures constantly. Uh, yeah, I was getting some texts and I mean, the only thing I'll say is like, when you pick third and you just pick, it's like, all right, I don't necessarily care. I was waiting around to see what the Giants did. And then I was waiting around kind of just to see what happened with Rosen. And then it didn't happen on the first night. And I was like. Hmm, I wonder what's gonna happen with this guy like should they just keep him I was kind of thinking the Giants were gonna make a move for him But then they picked their guy and then Washington picked their guy and then it was like whoa Where's where is rosing gonna go? Maybe he'll just maybe they'll keep on some of the TV prognosticators were were advocating for them just keep it keep it keep him why would you not keep him? Just keep them you already paid the money for them the argument was They're too close in age. It's gonna be a terrible room Like it just wouldn't make for a good culture like they're just they would be competing like legit like hate each other as opposed to Jake: Trying to help each other but every every position in the NFL when there's two people in the same room Especially in the quarterback room is the number one on that. Yeah, but you know what like Justin: Last year, if you look at like the McCon situation with Darnold, that was not the room. Of course, but they're not even close. But here's the thing. They were trying to say like... But also... In order to really analyze this, you have to give them both an equal chance. And it really like... You have to make your determination about like who's gonna be the starter, because whoever it is needs all the reps. Jake: I think it is more of a fresh start. Remember, there was some other things about Rosen. It wasn't just his bat. He was one of the worst starters of the quarterbacks last year. Stasistically, he didn't get better. Um, but there's also, there was lots of stuff that came out about his attitude
00 Jake: about the way he handled it, the way he handled media, the way he talked back to people and you know, one of the things Ron was watching and he got traded and he did that video of, you know, he thanked everybody in Arizona and I had a great time and I'm excited to go to whatever. and you know all the prognostics he really that was great because he's really been bad about social media and he's been really not good about how to handle it. So by the way, this is so there are other reasons I get rid of them besides the on the field stuff. There's the off the field stuff and I think. But we knew that from the get. Remember when he was being drafted? One of the things was his. Justin: He couldn't play in New York. He can't handle this. Jake: That was one of the things that he that he came from a family with money. There was this whole thing which I think is terrible. But what I his motivation for playing wasn't maybe pure like people didn't get it. Justin: Like it wasn't money. Well, you know, like some play football. Jake: That's one of the things that came out that he maybe wasn't super motivated about being a football star. And. And then I think there was some injury stuff with him. He got injured last year, but almost every single, the one, the first starters got injured. I will say, let's just take a second to like, where's Sam Donald in terms of it's been a year now. Where is he in terms of his social media, his, his, his making mistakes is whatever. Justin: He's exactly where he needs to be. He's in the Eli zone. Jake: He's But he does a very good job of it. He stays the fuck out of it. Justin: That's what I mean. He's in the Eli zone. Jake: Well, I don't want to compare him to Eli. There's plenty of people who stay out of it that are great. Justin: No, no, no, Eli handled New York brilliantly. Right. I mean, winning really helps. Yes. Winning two Super Bowls takes a lot off your shoulders, but he really handled New York the way you have to handle it. Like. I thought Sanchez did a nice job, but at the same time, it was like, do you really need to be on the GQ cover? Like he did the commercials. Jake: He did the videos of him and him and the girlfriend. He did. He did stuff that was like more about himself as opposed to I'm just going to stay out of it. I think Donald doesn't even have Twitter. Justin: I'm telling you, he's following the Eli playbook. He's doing it right because through year one. I mean, he's not even like the star, right? It's Jamal Adams, right? Well, it's a man Adams Yeah, but it's really Adams. Yeah, Adams is way out there, right? Well, let that him take the heat to let him Jake: Yeah, he wants it. He wants and now we have other people take the all right. We got to talk about it. Let's do it so Not mandatory. I mean the optional the optional workouts. So just to be clear Bell did show up for like the beginning of them, the first set, and then got the playbook because you get the iPad, you get logged in, whatever, and then he went back to his regular workouts and he said no, he posted something the other day on Twitter, blah blah blah, you know I'm working out, I'm ready, I want to win a ring, which I'm always like that's whatever. I don't think he's good at social media. I think he's one of those he's just a firefly and or a lightning beam
00 Jake: He's off to his a on a scale of one to ten. How does it make you feel? Do you care? Do you not care? What's the one and what's the ten? Oh ten is you mad bro zero is don't give a shit Justin: I'm in the zero range. Yeah, I'm me like if it's optional It's optional if you really want me to be there then don't call it optional tell me I have to actually be there And secondly, apparently he's never gone to OTAs. Jake: Yeah, here's the counter. Don't care. You spat out an entire year. Well, just listen. You sat an entire year, you kind of played a me card. You're on a brand new team. I think the optics of saying I'm not going to show up to this thing, that I'm a brand new team, I'm, you know, to meet and meet with people, I just think that this, it's not like the workouts are that big. It's really just, they're in shells, they're not doing much. I just think the optics of not showing up. I don't like it. Again, I think in September we'll forget about it. It's not like his workout, the amount of sit-ups he does now is going to matter in September. I don't think it's the working out. I just think as a team for a brand new player who got signed to this massive contract to show up, why have it be about you not being there? You have enough time to go put out albums and do rap videos and be doing other stuff. It just doesn't look good for you not to show up. Justin: But that's... this is his off-season. Jake: Well no, he had an off-season. He had it in a year. Justin: No, this is legitimately his off-season. Jake: September through December was off-season. Justin: No, stop. Stop. This is really his time off. from his job. Jake: I got it. Justin: And if these things are real, like OTAs, Yeah. and if you really are going to hold it against somebody for not being there, then don't call them optional. Jake: Well, they are optional. Justin: Then don't hold it against somebody for not being there. All right. Don't hold it against them for how it looks, how it feels. Jake: I just want to be quick. It's a complete optional nonsense. We're putting in the books right now, you are a bell apologist and you're always going to be a bell apologist because you love him. Yes, I love the guy. All right. Doesn't matter what he does. Justin: And I'm so happy he's on the Jets, because I've loved him for years. Jake: I'd love to see him in a fucking jersey. Love seeing him show up and get to know his teammate. Justin: You will when he has to be there. Great. Like, you know, when his job says, you have to be at your job now. Jake: Yeah, because no one ever goes above and beyond. Listen, if Sam Darnold wasn't there, we'd be pissed. Justin: The guy's here. He's on the team and he'll show up when he's supposed to. Okay, it's just not a good look. Jake: I'm not saying it's a big deal. And again, I want to have never have talked about this ever again until September. Justin: I am certain that there is not one player that played poorly because they missed OTAs. Jake: The optics are not great. Justin: don't care. You're... Well, the optics are important. Well, it's the way you're seeing it. Yes, that's optics. Yeah, to me, my optics, I'm like, don't call it fucking optional, stupid league. That's a league thing. I'm talking about, show up for your team. He doesn't have to. Right. So he's not.
03 Justin: But he could have. But he has a routine. He has his own routine that he follows. Yeah. And guess what? He's been super productive. Jake: Yeah. So let him follow his routine. Great. That's all. Yeah. Yeah. Just let's hope it's hope it all works out. Anything else going on? Any other big news? I don't think so. Really. Justin: No, he didn't dump Dan Lee. So maybe. Yeah. Someone get hurt during the preseason or during OTAs or, you know, another reason not to go to OTAs. Don't get hurt. Jake: Yeah, I think he's the other person who didn't go. Justin: He's not there, yeah. Jake: But you see, there's one person who goes, because he's kind of on the chopping box. I think they actually told him not, I think there was a rumor they told him not to show up because they wanted to not have him get hurt. But people getting, oh no, someone did get hurt. Jason, Paul got hurt. Justin: Yeah, but he got hurt in a car accident. No, someone, alright, someone else got hurt. Someone did, someone in OTAs is out. For the season, yeah. Well, it's like, do I need Lebian Bell at an OTA tearing his ACL? No. I really don't. No, I don't. It's the last thing I need in my life. Jake: True, but you could also be doing a workout, doing shuttle drills and tearing an ACL as well. He totally could. So then we'd be like, why are you shooting? Justin: I'd rather him not do it at OTA. Jake: The story would be the same thing. It'd be like, you were working out by yourself, what an idiot, but what? It'd be the reverse story. Justin: I... I'd rather him not be at like a team function that he doesn't have to be at and get hurt. Jake: Here's what I don't want. I don't want the negative press about the Jets. I don't like that it hits the airwaves. I'd rather him just showed up. I'd rather the things have been like, everybody's there. It's great. But now, because he didn't, it just puts another spotlight, a negative spotlight on the Jets about a player who we're paying a shit ton of money to. who it you know, sat out an entire year because he wanted to sign a big contract, now showing up. It just, it just wasn't so easy. He shows up. Great. Just show up. And then you know what? Then there's no talking points. I don't want the talking points. I don't want people talking about the jazz people. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I hate it. I'd rather just be like, look, Sam Donald, everything's good. He's good. He's there. Everybody's there. Everybody's happy. Great. Go home. By the way, was it a week? Like it's not even, it's not even a big amount of time. Anyway, great. Anything else going on? Nothing. When are we gonna come back? When is actually, mandatory is in June, right? Mandatory workouts? Actually, I don't know. Houston, the Houston Texans. Is that it? Titans? All right, sorry. All right, cool. Tennessee Texans. Tennessee Texans. You haven't been to that place yet. All right, cool. Well, then we don't have anything else to talk about. That was the draft. Overall. grade? Do you even overall grade? Um, we can get it on record like a B. Give it a B. Yeah, I think after I looked at it, I'm gonna go B minus I'm a little bit I'm a little bit underwhelmed. I think there's some interesting pics in there. But right now, it doesn't feel like, again, I think you should have had three guaranteed starters on. And I feel like we're kind of
00 Jake: stretching the C three guaranteed starters out of a six person draft. guaranteed, like starting like, oh, these guys are making a difference on the team. I see like, oh, that guy could kind of make a difference and ooh, if he works out and ooh, just if he's not so terrible, he might be good. One blue chipper, that seems about it. Anyway, I do like that they played around and kind of moved up and down. I liked that McCagging's willing to do that. I just wish they had traded out of that three and picked up stuff. I think we could have walked away with like seven or eight players. and gotten a couple more that we needed. Anyway, cool. We'll be back in whenever, I guess, whenever we want. There's news to cover. And until then, as always, Justin and Jake saying, let's go Jets. Kauffman, Kauffman, Kauffman!
