19 Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, the longest running New York Jets podcast. Oh, where'd that voice go? I'm Jake, enjoying me for many, many, many, many, many, many, 315 times in a row. Justin: How many? Jake: 315. Justin: That's a lot of minis. Jake: Is Justin. Justin, how are you doing today? Justin: Great. Jake: My voice is going. Justin: Yeah, what's up with that? Jake: I don't know. Talking too much. Stop talking. Thank you for watching. Justin: Thank you. All right, let's get on with the show now. We don't need you. This is fantastic. Oh, this is good Jake: All right, so never never ever ever ever ever gonna have an agenda Justin: Mac gets the knife So to some of his players We did hire a new GM in the time since we've like It's funny, our last podcast, we were like, this guy, man, can I, da, da, da, yeah, now he's gone. Jake: And, uh, so it was a month ago. Justin: Yep. And Joe Douglas is in. We will talk about the, how that all transpired and looking forward to seeing what Joe Douglas can do. Practice, practice, practice has actually occurred. Practice. Uh, Lady on Bell has been seen with the pads, running with the ball. It's been fantastic. And then we've got a new signing. an old oldie buddy gutty we'll talk about it great all right cool so let's talk about mac Jake: so we ended the draft giving the graph these grades saying that mac had done a good job they did good and i think i don't even know if i feel like we've talked about so many times offline obviously it feels like you could make either argument, right, for whether Mac was good and did some amazing things that we still are benefiting from and also or Mac did some terrible terrible things that he should have been fired for. I don't disagree with the firing. I always have said this. I don't disagree with the firing. from a, hey, you're gonna fire your GM, great. What I think just can't be cancerous to this organization and what makes the Jets and these other organizations just never be able to get out of their own way is how they handled it and when, right? There was an opportunity in December or in January, on that Monday to just call your house and be like, both you fuckers, you're out. You guys are both sucko. You're a sucko and you're a sucko. To keep him on, to help him help organize the search for the next head coach to be a part of that process, then to go through the entire draft, then to fire him after the draft means that you didn't read the writing on the wall and you didn't... actually do it when you should have.
00 Jake: And it's what's come out since, as Christopher Johnson has said, oh, you know, that one of the things, or the rumors are that it's the stuff that happened during that period that kind of put it over the top. But that to me is like where bad organizations do. They wait until it's too late. Having said that... Justin: You're not going to let me chime in at all. Jake: Wait, I'm just giving my opinion. This is actually pretty much what you do. You don't talk and then you talk forever. Having said that... My only wish for now is that they hire a GM done and that we can just move on that that we're not sitting around in September. Talking about how it was never going to happen. Talking about no, if this had gone on for a while, it wasn't going to go on that long. It could have. Justin: Now, let's say we hired somebody. They weren't going to let Adam Gates just run the show. That was actually a possibility. Yeah, yeah, yeah, until it wasn't because it wasn't going to be a thing. That Adam Gace doesn't get to do that right now. Jake: So, but all those rumors that came out of the draft about Gace and Mac not getting along and there being a big fight in there. All that stuff. It was real. Clearly that was real. Justin: I will defend the timing of this. Why? Because this happens. This is not a bad thing. This happens all the time. This is something the Bills do. And the Chiefs. Thanks. The year before so like the guy drafted Pat Mahomes and then got fired Dorsey Dorsey Carden went Dorsey who then went to the Browns and drafted Baker the guy knows how to draft quarterbacks Jake: Clearly so that you're making the argument that he shouldn't have been fired. He could have gotten fired or not I know I'm saying I'm saying my cabinet. No, cuz you're saying I'm talking about the good because he's talking about the timing Justin: Okay, strictly speaking this guy John Dorsey. I think it's John Drafted did the Chiefs draft two years ago now Draft moved up, had the autonomy to move up, grab Papa Holmes, and then they fired him. And then he got a job with Cleveland and did basically the same thing, like drafted a quarterback, fine. There's nothing wrong with not disrupting the lead up to free agency and the draft because those things have been, they're already working on it now. Yeah, right now. I know the scouts are out there. They're out there doing it for next year. For next year. So definitely it's like taking eight months of work and throwing it in the garbage and then having to catch up. Jake: Play catch up while people are working on other like the timing just would not work. The free agency market is not the free agency market. You don't work on as much because it's such a crapshoot and you're arguing you're going back with teams and what teams are working on it. But what players let go and where they are. Some of them, you know, but a lot of them you don't know, because you don't know what other teams are going to do. But you're working on the whole of it. You're working on the whole of it. You just let someone sit, make this entire, you know, again,
03 Jake: the decisions you make in the free and see and draft last for years. But he doesn't get to do that alone. Justin: Like, he doesn't get to go sign Le'Veon Bell without the blessing of Chris Johnson. So then here's the thing. But get to go. Let me talk. He doesn't get to go sign CJ Moseley without the blessing of the owner. But not the blessing of the new head coach he just hired. You get the blessing of the coach. The coach has no problem with Lebian Bell as a player. He GM Gaze didn't like the amount of money that he was paying the running back. And let that slip. But that is not Adam Gaze's responsibility. Jake: Sorry, it is not your responsibility to care what the players made So it looks like a fucking total cluster fuck when you have a team where the head coach comes out Yeah, and it's really this is not yelling. Yeah, trust me. Don't look at me that way cluster fuck Justin: Look at me like that. Like I did this. No, I'm just saying this is why I think it this is why I don't think this is why the Jets and the losses they cut it. They cut it. They said Mac. Thanks for the four years Thank you. You drafted our quarterback and you probably did not a whole lot else. Jake: This is the problem with the organization. The teams at the end of the day, because everything in the team swaps in and out all the time. The only consistency in this team is where they play and who owns them. The colors, the uniforms all change. But that's the truth. For pretty much every scene. But that's when you start to look at why have the Jets not been able to do something for so long. Sometimes you have to go up and that's where my concern is because I look up and I see this family that has kind of fucked over this team and these are the things that they do. Instead of clearing house. Justin: in January and no one does that so they would have no nobody does that nobody fires their general manager in January it's not a thing yeah in the NFL we did it four years ago we hired we Jake: hired we did both at the same time we we got rid of um Oh, it's a and Rex we did. Justin: Yeah, it's like was a trash fire. Yeah, but I think they fired it's like before the season ended. Like they gave themselves a lot of buffer time with him. Jake: I did the same day. I do not believe that was true. I believe they fired him well before I. But either way, I just think I go out, spend 100 million dollars. Justin: That abnormal. Let's put it that way. It is not that. abnormal. It happens. And guess what? Guess what? As a Knicks fan, I will stand here and raise my hand and say, dumb fuckery at the ownership level is not something you can solve for. It just isn't. If you're gonna have dumb fuckery at the very very top as an owner and the owner is gonna be the reason why you lose. Which is the actual factual thing with the Knicks. I don't know if it's really true with the Jets, but with the Knicks,
00 Justin: they can't get free agents to come to New York City and play in the world's most famous arena because the owner is such a dick. That's a real thing. Jake: This episode brought to you by Time Warner. Justin: With the Jets. Time Warner doesn't even exist anymore. So but with the Jets. They They, like the Steelers, they're generally good over the course of time. What do they have? Well, they have coaches that stay for like 15 years at a time. They usually have a quarterback there that's been there or is with them that comes up through their system. the last common thread have been there. By the way, that coach knows what the hell he's doing in GM. So that's okay. You look at like how many coaches have they really had over the last 15 years? Three, I think now, not a lot. Right. These are consistently good teams that don't turn over all that much. But sometimes, like, the Packers on New GM like two years ago, I think. I think last year, I was in the Jake: He fires the coat. I don't know the owners of the the Cardinals are Yeah, whatever the fuck but they must have he must have pictures of them like what are you having sex with those? Oh, no, because how do you that fire me because look at these pictures of you having sex with a goat Justin: So wouldn't you be like more upset if MacCagnan came in and was like, you know what? I just drafted Sam Donald this year Jake: I'm gonna drop this Kyler Murray guy. We're going. It's all a scale of upsetness Justin: It's not. I'm not. You should be happy. We have a we have a guy now that's that that by all accounts is like, hey, he won a Super Bowl. There you go. On a staff that built through the draft. Like legitimately built up a team in the same way that we are now going to try to build up a team. and with a coach that he's worked with before, they know each other and they trust each other and they're gonna be a team now. And I'd like to think that we can give these guys more than three years to see if they're gonna win. I mean, this is the window and it is a four-year window. And I feel as though they have to kind of start winning now, but it'd be good to just sit back and be like, this is our squad for 10 years. These two guys are going to lead it and however it goes, it's going to go. It's not. Jake: So I can just, I'm generally very, very, very positive on whatever coach we hire. Right. a this from the way he came out with crazy eyes to the way he's left shit. Like let stuff slip and then they go, they fire the guy who helped, apparently him and
04 Jake: him and Magma and Magma were all fighting all this stuff. I can tell you Gace is just, I want to be wrong, but I think he is almost a one and done. I could see him being fired at the end of the season. Easily easily if he does great things that's awesome Justin: I don't see him getting fired at the end of this totally the only way I see him getting fired at the end of this Particular season is one twelve is if nobody gets hurt Sam Donald regresses and They only win like four or five games. Yes, then I could maybe see him getting fired and And if there's an if there's an issue with like the offense being not tailored around our skill like, hey, we have this guy, Le'Veon Bell, and we have the second year quarterback. Jake: He warms him up the middle every single time. Justin: Yeah, and it's just a shit show of like three yards per carry. But I can't, again, I think he's too good to have that happen to him. The one thing that I was reading about, like when they did fire my Cagna, and that stood out to me that, I'd never really caught all these years of like watching the Jets and covering them and doing this podcast where we actually have to pay attention. I didn't realize that he in his four years never drafted an offensive lineman as high as like even the third round. And our offensive line is just garbage. And I look back and I think about like the team builders like and I was myself. The line is like you should be drafting an offensive lineman in the first or second round, like consistent. Just. get those guys on the team because you even saw what it did last year for you know the Colts for example and what happened with Andrew Luck and how he was able to come back and be really good well he got injured because he was getting sacked like 50 to 60 times a season which is insanity They drafted And that happened with the Cowboys too, during Dax rookie year when they drafted. Yeah, they had the best line. Jake: They had like blue trippers across the line. One in the first and second round. Justin: First and second round picks is the whole line. And it's like, hey, where's the line? Jake: And then the whole thing, like, I totally agree with you. Like, these are the faults. But my argument of that would be... You can keep building your line as much as you want, but when the team, it's like, oh, do you want to go have some steak? Well, if I'm starving to death, or if I'm, not starving, if I'm dying of thirst, you need water first.
01 Jake: And so you need the quarterback. So if you have the chance to get the quarterback, and we just kept missing and missing and missing and missing and missing on quarterback, so you gotta get the quarterback. Oh, I mean, next year, unless Darnold just turned into a pumpkin, you can just put in right now, like guard. Like, we'll be in, hopefully in the 10-15 rain, and it's just like offensive line, done, first round, done, just, you can write it up. Who is the best guy right now? Get him. We talk about it every year in the draft. It's like, hey. I would not be, we talk about the year of the D-Brick and fucking and and mangled. Every year it's like boy, remember that draft? Ten years we got out of those guys. Ten years. Those two guys started for ten years and created that line for ten years. Like why not grab them? Grab a guy. It doesn't matter. Like don't go for the splashy play. Go for that guy. Anyway. Alright, so that's the bad. The good is this guy, I don't know anything about Joe Douglas, but from the others who were in the crazy whatever, that was the first name that came out of their mouth. It was like, if we get Joe Douglas, it'll be worth it. And you know what? Justin: We interviewed a lot of people and we got Joe Douglas. I mean, we've been on the... You know, this copycat league, right? It's like, you know, when they won the Super Bowl and, you know, even with the Wentz and then like, hey, this is how this is going to play out. Like we've been trying to sort of copy them in a way. Right. The Eagles. Jake: Because they're guys going in the third year. Justin: Well, their quarterbacks going in third year and their coaches going into the second year and the coach was a direct offensive coordinator of the Eagles when they won the Super Bowl. So it's like, yeah, that's a real deal connection right there. Gaze again has a bit of a connection to that organization. And now we're just bringing in the next layer. It's like, all right, let's copy that team that won the Super Bowl. I mean, they beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. That's a pretty good thing with a backup quarterback. that's a pretty good thing. Jake: And from a GM standpoint, have we ever, let's go back over our GMs. Have we ever gotten a GM that was a GM before? So obviously, McIgan, no. Well, this guy wasn't a GM. He wasn't? No. I thought he was a GM. He's not their GM, no. He was never been a GM. Justin: Never been a GM. Oh fuck. I don't think that's the case with Joe Douglas. I am really I don't believe he's ever been a GM Anywhere. He's a young guy who's come up through Football, you know, but he's never I don't think ever held that job Jake: Prior to joining the joint member of Baltimore Ravens of an early life professional career development. Justin: Yeah, he was with the Ravens as an executive. He was with the Bears as a director of college scouting. He was with the Eagles of VP of player personnel. And now he's moved up to the gym. So he's moved up the ranks is the way to go.
02 Justin: Why is that bad? Jake: I just Bye. I just would like to have a GM that was a GM. Justin: I don't know if I really want that. Because there's certain guys, yes, that you know you're gonna a Jake: Like, I mean, at least he was at least he was the vice president of player personnel. And the Eagles like step right down. Justin: It's like, who are the guys? You're gagging. You're a player. Scouting. Right. Wasn't he a player guy? Like, right. McAagna was a college scout. This guy actually moved beyond that and got to a level of, OK, I'm I. I'm involved in player personnel here and. Like was there during the Eagles ascension? Right? I mean he was there from from the start of their ascension through the NFC. Jake: I just I I just wish we got a G. I just wanted for this case. It's my case. My case for Gates was that he was a head coach and you learn by doing and sometimes we keep behind the guys who like learn on the job and they don't learn on the job. Well guess what? Justin: He's gonna have to and that's that. All right. And apparently he's being he's he's considering. What is that sound? That's a fun sound. That's a fun sound. Um, he's bring in Todd McShea. Yeah, that's kind of interesting. I don't know if I love that, but I don't know if I hate it either. I have no idea what he would necessarily do. He's on TV and he. Jake: So what's the other guy went to the um. Justin: What is this? It's not. It's out there. It's outside. What is this? What is this? Jake: What is this? So the other guy went to... Mayoc went to the Raiders. Oh, but Mayoc is the Raiders general manager. So this is becoming a thing, hiring the... The TV analyst. The TV analyst. Yeah, I'm not sure I love it. Feels like there's a difference between sitting around and kind of like doing well, it's like Justin: I mean oakland's basically a tv show. They got gruden and mayok. I mean they may as well go call the games. Yes That'd be funny. That would be hilarious. Like hey, we're not gonna coach this one. We're just gonna call it from the booth Yep, this is all good inside access uh, so They got to work and actually before joe douglas got there gaze was the Interim General Manager and he went right to work. He traded Darren Lee. Yeah, if he traded Darren Lee to the Chiefs for a 20-26 round pick, why not? He was gonna leave. Yeah, you got a six round pick for free. For our first rounder. He was drafted as a first rounder. Yeah, he doesn't grade out as a first rounder clearly. And by the way, they went and signed CJ Mosley. So Avery Williamson is going to replace what Darren, where Darren Lee played.
01 Justin: He's better than Darren Lee. That's just the facts. It's just. And when you, when you got the first round and you give them up for six, that's bad draft pick. Perhaps. That's a bad traffic like yeah, I mean it Odell Beckham didn't go for Jake: As a first rounder and then get traded for a six you have a first rounder and then got traded for more. Yeah Justin: Like he all you went up his value did go up, R. But that's this guy's values on down He's a really great player. I Darren Lee is so but when you but Darren Lee is not a really great Jake: You pick someone in the first round? Justin: Whatever the most about the Eagles mo so get used to that paying guys like a year early Family, that's fine cuz once wasn't up. No, it wasn't but they did it anyway He had two years left and they gave him four year prices. The price is going up to Jake: I'm a little worried if I'm a Carson Wentz fan and I'm kind of a fan. I like him from a kind of fun to watch and he's totally fun to watch. He's good. But I don't know, when you get two years in a row of being hurt, like there's lots to players out there. I know. Sam Bradford that just feel like they're always hurt. Justin: There are some that, there are some though that early in their careers, they just have to figure out how to protect themselves. like, like remember,. And he was the number one overall pick. Yes. During- During the year that Sanchez was drafted and like after two years, it was like, well, we got the better guy. Cause that guy can't stay on the field. Right. He hasn't been injured since. Jake: True. He, he hasn't done anything since. Justin: I know, but he's been a good quarterback. Like you would take him. You would take him. You would take him. Jake: He's that guy that keeps the- keeps the or he's just he's he's the right man and you would take him no better than Ryan Tannehill he's the Ryan Tannehill he's better than Ryan Tannehill Justin: but he's also been given a shit ton of weapons remember he had Calvin Johnson but he missed his first two years so it was like and then Calvin Johnson did retire earlier than I wouldn't take him today staffers no not today but Arnold no you would have drafted him one overall and been happy with him for a while Jake: You certainly would have talked to the Lions fans that are like they're caught in that weird point You know, there's the thing called the dot the dollar a shitty coach. Have you heard of the Dalton scale Andy? Oh, yes, the Dalton scale is it's like the median and like if you're above the Dalton scale Justin: You're a good quarterback and you're below Dalton scale. You're a Sam. Donald's below right currently currently, right? We're hoping this year he gets above the Dalton right above the Dalton scale to me Uh, that's funny. Jake: I was like made by so many playoffs, but never won anything. Just good enough to not fail enough to get replaced.
00 Jake: Like that's what you don't want. You don't want the guy who's just good enough to not be good enough to get you in that position. Justin: I don't think that once is that guy. Like I think once is not the guy that you want to replace. He's just the guy that you hope doesn't kill himself. And times more talented than. Jake: than Dalton or Stafford, but you just don't want that guy. Cause that guy keeps you in this zone where you, he's like, well, we can't really give up on him. Cause he's just good enough. People make the playoffs next year. But then you realize. Justin: But sometimes it's also just about the team because is Nick Foles better than Matt Stafford? Really? No. No, but he won a Superbowl. Uh, that's about it. Nobody got hurt. That's good. You gotta get out of guys are already out for the year across the league. It's like, turn ACL or pop that Achilles. It's like, dang. Yeah. Jake: So that's coach, some coach. I was playing a pickup basketball game. That's right. Achilles. Yes. Who was it? Is this saints or is it? No, it wasn't the saints. No. It was, uh, it was a new coach. Justin: It was, it was like a new head coach. The Arizona. Wasn't Arizona. Oh crap. I forgot. Yeah, there's a coach that was out there that tours ACL playing pickup hoops. Yeah. Jake: Playing a specific game like the game where I don't know it's like this called something. Justin: Whatever. I'm like wow that guy is gonna have a lot going on. First year head coach. You're basically working all day every day. And now you have to rehab your knee. You can't even walk around. Yeah, it's gonna suck. Sucks to be you. At least he's at a facility that can just. That's true. Teaching work and rehab at the same time. It's like, all right, do your thing. I'm going to sit here with my iPad and look over the playbook or whatever. Terrible. Whatever coaches do. Jake: Terrible. Well, we're in the middle of June, pretty much. And we have. Justin: Game plans are starting to formulate, and practice schedules are starting to come together. Jake: So I've watched some of the press releases or press conferences with Gace. Where were his eyes? Was he watching you? He was watching some taco. Was he watching? Um... Yeah, I'm just... I'm trying not to feel like I don't like him. I'm trying to be like, no, it's gonna be fine, it's gonna be fine. Again, to me, the Jets handled... I think the timing was bad, but they did the right thing. They went out, they got a good guy, and I want...
02 Jake: I want this story to go away. I was actually looking forward to this season, this off-season and being the... Not stupid jets in this in the in the media. Of course, they already did that. So now let's get it out Let's get into July. Let's get actual practice going. Let's get training camp We don't have to do hard knocks because we have a first-year head coach so we can't they're not gonna do that loud Or I mean, you're not allowed you I think you can't you can if you really there's only four teams that are that like Cuz he no playoffs or eligible team. Yes, like are the Giants one of them? Justin: I feel like they are. Jake: Head coach, second year head coach. Justin: Second year head coach did not make the playoffs. They'd be a fun hard knocks team this year. With the whole quarterback situation. We've done it. Only two in the last ten years. They haven't done it. Yes they have. The Giants have never done it. Really? Really. No they did. No they have never done it. I would know they would they definitely did not the Giants would be totally fun. They have Barkley They have Eli sure. Yes. I'm totally sure Totally sure trust me. They've never done it Jake: Browns bucks Rams Texans Falcons Bengals Dolphins Jets Bengals again Cowboys Chiefs Cowboys again Ravens I went the opposite way. You went backwards. Yeah. Justin: That's OK. They've never done it. Oh, OK. So I think they'd be fascinating with the quarterback situation and Barkley's interesting. You know, they've got a couple of things going on. Again, the New York thing. So that's a little biased. They'd be cool to watch. I would love to run, run the Browns back. To see them do a season two of the Browns cuz I feel like they'd be way more interesting this year than they were last year Jake: Five teams lions eligible Raiders Giants 49ers Redskins Justin: Oh, then give me the Raiders Raiders. Just put Gruden. I want to be all the day. Yeah, all the way in Antonio Brown I'm in yeah, I'm in yep. Yep, throw mayoc on there. I'm all in they got a TV show ready to go there 49ers don't care. Oh wait, the Raiders are not yet in Vegas though. No, they'll wait till next year Jake: That's true, but they could have a new haircut, but then now I guess that's ten years We kind of fun with the new with the new quarterback. It's got it the rookie Justin: Yeah, he's there's definitely a competition going on there. It's Alex. Smith is not gonna be back I got it's the rookie Haskins or it's Colt McCoy. Maybe no or think they grabbed Jake: Case Keenum. And Case Keenum. Justin: They have a three way competition after with the rookie first round pick thrown in, which I mean, I'm sure they're rooting for him, right? Because they drafted him or at least for him to show something to know that they can throw him in there in the middle of the year. Plus we play them. We play them this year. So that would be fun to see a team that we play in the box. Jake: And we do we play them. We don't play them in preseason. Justin: No, we play them in the regular season. Jake: That'd be fun. You know, for realsies. Yeah, so of those team we also play the Raiders and we also play the Giants we play the Giants who else is on that don't play Lions Lions Raiders Giants 49ers Redskins. So we play three would be fun, too I would like to see Jimmy G on on on there see his yeah hit at the comeback story. I like that
05 Jake: I don't mind the Niners either Whatever. Alright. We need to wrap this puppy up. Let's do it. Let's wrap it up. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. Justin: Let's get a goddamn snack. Jake: And there's a 7% battery left on my laptop. Alright. Well, we had to say, Bwapawel. Yeah, for not bad. Bwapawel's back. That's a big backfield now. It can't hold them all. Justin: No. Ah, the rumors are that like, Trent Cannon and Eli Maguire are both in hot water. Really? Because McAG drafted them so like those are guys are canon wasn't drafted under after agent but one of those two guys in hot water I'd rather have those I'd rather keep them both then blow pal although I think I'd rather have pal than cannon Yes, like cannon didn't really show me anything aside from the fact that he can't play special teams, right? Which is the ball he's bombastic fuck. Yeah, but he's got to be in space to do that and He never got out there. So no, I rather drop some like wheel routes that he should be catching he dropped. So Jake: Yeah, okay. All right. Well, we'll wrap it up. So little little mid-june thing we Well, hopefully we'll be back in July with some fun news. If anything happens, because nothing's going to happen between now and this is like the dead zone of the NFL. Justin: Yeah, this is like the one month. This is it. NFL is kind of off. Jake: Then we'll be back in July. Hopefully do a pre camp, pre training camp podcast. And we guess then we get God, we have. And we got it. Actual football starting. Justin: So Bob, I think we're only like 13 more Sundays or something like that. Until actual football starts. Yeah, it's pretty, it's closer than you'd think. Jake: Oh, can't wait. Can't not wait. Counting down the Sundays. Alright, until then, it's Justin Jake saying, let's go Jets. We need to take action! We need to take action!
