16 Jake: This is Jet Kingdom Podcast, episode number 12 for Wednesday, November 7th, 2007. Big Pimpin' Welcome to this week's episode of the Jet Kingdom podcast. This is episode 12 on a nice Wednesday night, November 7th, and I as always am Jake across the digital aisle, as always Justin: is. As always Justin, I'm here still. Justin, you sound... Jake: Every week. You sound so invigorated. Justin: Every week it just gets worse and... worse and You just become just that much more motivated to yeah do this show Jake: Well, that's just giving a lot to our listeners out there who really are excited to hear you complain No, what do they get us? Maybe maybe we should do an entire episode. Well, it could be next week when we don't play actually No complaining. It's all good. So let's go back. Let's take a step back in time. I know it's tough, but let's take a step back in time and let's look back at this game that was The Washington Redskins against the New York Jets where for once, well, I guess for always the Jets lost. But for once it... Justin: Were you about to say for once the Jets lost? Jake: No, I was going to say for once it looked like the Jets could win. but I feel like we... could win most every game. And to start the game off, we get the number, the third time in the season. Lee Ann Washington runs it back for a touchdown. You always say, and I'm beginning to maybe think that you're right, although that's very, very rare. It's rare that you join my side on the thing. you like to say it's a system and you know what it might just be because while we in Washington is a good player and fast he is certainly not one of the best you know return men out there but he looks like a star this year so there's a positive. Could that be our only pro bowler again? It actually could be. It could be. Why don't you think, I think the, well let's go back to the big thing. Obviously the big thing in the game is Kellen Clemens steps on the field. He's the guy. He's now our guy and I like what I saw out of him. I think I saw someone who, you know, will sit in the pocket. He'll take a hit for God's sakes because he took some wobs and get right back up there. You know, he certainly wasn't the most accurate guy on the planet. He, you know, 23 for 42, he was throwing some balls that just looked like, why'd you just throw that? It would go, you know, it would drop like three feet in front of the guy
01 Jake: or way over his head, but I think he showed some promise. He looked like a guy that, you know, starting his second game ever, I go, okay, what do you think about Kellen started? Justin: I had a couple of impressions, first impressions. Number one, he has an arm. Maybe it's just that I'm so used to watching Chad for like the last five years, but this guy can really throw the ball hard. Yeah. The key... He can do things and he did do things in the game that I you know and watching it I'd say Chad couldn't do that like you would say well Chad wouldn't do that He wouldn't throw the ball, you know, seven feet over receiver said true, but Chad also can't run for 48 yards Jake: Yeah, yeah, Helen Clemens is actually fast. Yeah, I didn't realize he had some moments He could get up there and get to getting Justin: At one point before the overtime started he was our leading rusher. I mean He had 48 yards for the game. That's not bad. He also couldn't throw on the run He threw, you know across his body he can he has an arm. So I was impressed. He managed the game fairly Well, he did something at the end of the game, which impressed me, which was he drove us down the field to tie the game And unfortunately, we didn't give him a chance on fourth down to win the game. We punted in overtime. I mean, that's the end of the game. I don't know if we want to jump that far ahead, but I would have liked to have seen him put in that spot in fourth down and just pretend it's meaningful. Jake: I mean, a couple things that just jump right out on me about this game. One is that... you For I think the first time even though even in Washington one they wanted overtime. Okay fine But if you look at their scoring we didn't do one of the traditional jet things. Where is we get up this huge? Halftime thing and then Totally just faltered and we let them score in the in the third and fourth quarter But it wasn't a ton like they were working for it. I I will say you know on the negative side really disappointed in the defense again. I'm going to say there's two things that are very clear about our team. Our defense is terrible and our running game is horrible. You can't even win that way. That's why we're 1-8. Well, yes. So what do they say? You have to have a good run game and you have to stop the run and run the ball and we can't do either. I mean, Clinton, Portis. He puts up 196 yards. Are you kidding me? I mean, he almost puts up 200 yards by himself. Betis puts up another 64. Campbell, you know, the running, the quarterback puts up 31. They just destroyed us in running. And it's like. You can't win games that way. So as much as we can blame it on Chad or Kellen or Mike Nugent for missing them or DeRell,
03 Jake: well, they're all really just for making plays or not making plays at the end of games, which is something that we're not tackling, that run defense is just killing us. And the second thing, um... What I was really impressed with was that he put us in a position to win. That's the kind of thing that you hope that a quarterback can do. I think Chad used to do very well and maybe Kellen can come back and do. Which is at the end of the game get down there put us in a position, get us into overtime and then let it happen the way it should happen. Which is you should either be able to stop them and get the ball or which is what we I mean, you've already heard part of my rant because we've talked offline, but I'll give the rest of you viewers my rant. It's fourth and one in overtime. Go for it. Go for it. Because your team sucks. Because they don't have a win. Because you have no hope of going anywhere. It doesn't matter. Go for it. So what? If you don't make it, so what? Show some balls. Do something that gives a spark to this team. I mean, man, Gini's playing like this game would have been, you know, if he loses this game by so many points, he would make the playoffs. This is a horrible team. Like, give them a little ray of hope by saying, hey listen I believe you guys can make a first down in overtime that you could possibly go and win the game. Why in God's name would you not go for it? Can you fathom why you wouldn't go for it? Is there a reason? Did I miss it? Did I miss something? I... I... Justin: I guess, I don't know. Jake: Why would you play conservatively in a game that doesn't matter? What's the point? This is the whole time that you get the chance, the team, to make a spark, to show that you have trust in this guy. That's when you do it. And no, they decide as a 1-7, now 1-8, 1-17 in overtime to kick it away with a defense that has done nothing but let them trants all over them. I mean, if that shouldn't be your decision. So I mean, I'm going to call it early, but my fool of this game, I'm not going to go for, I have a night, but my fool for this game is the freaking coaching staff. I don't know where that was. I can't tell. What was that, mangenie? What was it? Schottenheimer's, probably Mangini, or the combination of two of them, but one of them should grow a set of balls. Maybe they could grow two balls and split them up and each one could have a ball because, my God, they're just, they don't seem to have anything. It reminds me of that stupid play, stupid play back in, I don't know, week two or week three where it was a fourth and one on the 20-something and they decided to go for a pass to the end zone and started just making the first down. like We had we had over a minute to go. Why are we doing this? Who was calling these plays and and and Whoever it is should be found out taken out and shot killed get off dark get off the team
04 Jake: I'm so sick of it. They play like they've got no balls. Are you actually calling for someone to die? Yeah metaphorically So that's that's my little rant. I'm just I'm just I'm just I'm just so so in sense. What are you? Justin: tell me what are you? Jake: I'm incensed, I'm incensed. You know I'm a pretty calm guy. And I'm a pretty, and I, and I, I love it. You're excitable at times. I love this, well I love this team. But it's just like, it doesn't make any sense to me. And what's it gonna get up and say, oh we've learned a few lessons and you know we're gonna make a better chance for next week and we're gonna try to make it a little bit better and the things we learn and the things we know how to do and things we don't know how to, shut up. just play play like you have some balls play like bella check you know who goes for it most on fourth and one in the league bella check you know why car cells uh parcells will be a second although it doesn't not a coach anymore but yeah they have some balls and they also know that you there's a high percentage chance that you can get or not a high percent chance but there is a percentage chance you make it and sometimes you just gotta make a stand and if you can't make a one yard when it's just It's just wasn't one yard. I don't remember doesn't even matter one two ten yards. It doesn't matter. It's overtime You're a one in 17 go for it. You've won in 20 go for it That's the game your team can't stop anybody. It's not like you got the the Ravens the Patriots Why would you put it into the hands of the defense to just let them trants you the whole time? Well, how would you do that? Anyway, I can't take it. It's literally getting me roused up. I was so calm and cool collected. Now I'm all riled up. So that's it. I'm going right to the end of this game. And I say that's the one thing that just pissed me off. And the Jets. Oh, that is a good game. I mean, if we had made that down and kicked the field goal and won the game, I think we've all been sitting around going, great game. You know, we lost the game because. They kicked the field goal. Justin: That was Portis's first 100 yard rushing game of the season. He hadn't rushed for 100 yards in a really long time, like way back through last season, like a while. Haven't we done that to every rusher, though? Seriously? Yeah, we make average rushers look... like, I'm really like, probably, yeah, Kenny Watson. I mean, we make really good. We make guys. We almost get guys contracts. I feel like I feel like Will Smiguet, he made his money off the Jets. I feel like he owes us like an escalator or something. That'd be nice. Yeah. Jake: One souped up. The other thing I noticed from the game was just watching Jason Campbell. You know, at the beginning of the season, he was winning games and it was like, oh man, this guy's really good. I hate to say this, but Jason Campbell just was a little lost out there. That man doesn't throw down the field ever. I mean, if it were, if you just take away Jason Portis, uh, Quentin Portis' stats there, or at least bring them down to what a normal running back would do, they would never even got close in this game. Yeah, the point is that they... They did runs that's the But he could throw away he plays that when he wanted to it was just it
02 Jake: I there's a couple Red skin fans in front of me and you know we were kidding around and you know joking and I was just like I Dare you to throw it go ahead try to any just they just wouldn't and we're not even that great of a past defense So anyway, so I've already named my fool Why don't you name your fool of the game and let him have it and then we'll go and name some nights on the nice on a nice Oh, okay. I Justin: Couldn't blame again one person. I can't ever blame a single person for the entire defensive units fault pick somebody Pick someone I'll pick I'll pick Dwayne Robertson just cuz I believe that he's the guy who if he went and they just brought in a big fat guy They could be much better much better. Yeah I just brought in a fat guy like like Sam Adams or The guy that they used to play with Pat Williams one of those big fat dudes Just stick them in the middle take up the center and one of the guards and you know Then the linebackers can actually move around Jake: Let's let's just let's just call this what it is if you're in college right now You're a junior senior thing about coming out in the draft and your nose tackle uh... you know start eating cuz you're a big fat guy Justin: will piss we're gonna have like you know that they choose to have one of the top five picks Jake: working we're gonna be a top five or so i mean it looks like it uh... i think so i'll go right from what the good ones a good for my night this week actually someone i've made it before although none of the podcast uh... but uh... You know, Eric Barton, Eric Barton sometimes just shows up to games, you know, like, where's this guy? Where's this guy every week of the season? Some weeks he's totally, he's a Mr. Invisible, but man, this guy with his sack and his interception, he was just like, he was all over the place and played a great game. I say, Eric Barton, you're my night of the week and here's to you. How was yours? Justin: I was torn on the nights. I picked Leon Washington. Oh yeah? Good choice. She scored a touchdown. Yeah, that's a good one. And I couldn't pick David Harris just because he's on the defense. Twenty tentacles. Yeah. I mean that's a sick game. He's really stepped up. But Leon's my knight in my official knighthood. Jake: Good, good job. Leon, I mean, just again, proving that either it's a really good system or he's a very good partner. Justin: Well, he's very good. He's fast and he's really good in space. So this, I don't know, him and Miller, they're just very fast. They get up into that wedge that they create and they just burst through to the second level and then. in. make like basically the kicker miss and they're gone Jake: that was a so that's that will just put that game to bed and and now we have a bi-week so we can talk about the upcoming game we can talk about being in the bi-week we can talk about the first half of the
03 Jake: season Justin: I think we should say that for next week's podcast that's true we don't Jake: really have much to talk about next week either Justin: what do you think next week we could do like a halftime scorecard or something sure some grades or something like that Yeah, like on the jets and then like maybe uh, like overall nfl stuff like you know league mvp half time or something cool. All right. Yeah, we'll do so Jake: We'll figure something out. It'll be cool. There's there's a teaser for you But why don't we go off and do some uh thrown picks talk about some upcoming games? You know only one game in the division the jets are the only the oh, yeah Justin: There's only... New England's off. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, there's only one game. Jake: Well, let's talk about it a little bit. Let's talk about Other Kingdoms. Let's talk about the indie game. Oh yeah, that was sweet. Let's talk about another team that's not ours that's doing well. Or two teams that are not ours that are doing well. Justin: Yeah, you know... Even when Brady has a bad game, he has a good game and they win. Jake: That was what impressed me because this is a game that they haven't had all season. They haven't had it yet. They got pressured. They got pressured and the Colts took it to them but they pulled it out. That just makes it look really scary. Even though I picked it wrong and yes I thought the Colts would win and the Patriots wouldn't win. Justin: So are you on record now saying the Colts are going to win the Super Bowl? Jake: I'm on record now saying that the Colts will win the Super Bowl. Wow. By the way, go back to my prediction at the beginning of the season. See what I said. Justin: Oh, I don't want us to go back to mine. Yeah, do you know what mine was? I know what mine was and I don't even want to say it. What was it? Well, New England was the team that I said would win, but I don't even want to say who I said they would be playing against. Who was it? Thanks for watching. Jake: Hahahaha. Oh, that's pathetic. I know. Justin: It's so embarrassing. I'm actually upset that you forgot that and I just reminded you of it. Jake: Yeah, well, now I won't forget it from now on. Shit. So, yeah, this we can talk about the Buffalo Miami game. I mean... and uh... Justin: ice and the world and and i definitely on the Jake: yes well you know they some on something that i think might happen still which is good as opposed to the rams and is randy moths unstoppable he is he's stop a bowl you put a really i don't think yeah i think he's really good and he's he's very very good but you put a good corner on him he's gonna get you he's gonna get you on a play There's going to be a touchdown from him. The question is, I think the Colts had that. You have to have a good enough defense to keep them, you know, under 30 points. Justin: I don't know though. He played like a big play receiver and a possession receiver in this game. I mean, he had nine catches.
00 Justin: But he also had a 55 yard catch. But look at their scores though. Jake: Look at the score. They made scores with Kevin Falk and Wes Walker. And I mean, they weren't able to run off the points. I think that's the thing. If you can keep Moss to one... or two touchdowns. Keep the team confined. And I think the Colts have that. It'll be a great matchup, clearly almost in New England. And it could. Yeah, probably. Yeah, I mean, the chances are we'll be in New England. So that could be just the best game of the century, considering the rivalry, considering how good these two teams are. I mean, hopefully everything's healthy. I mean... you know since we're not gonna be totally anywhere here at I'm gonna be rooting for the Colts I tell ya Colts to take it all because at least they're not Patriots just so just pissed me off anyway this whole New England Justin: bullshit is pissing me off alright let's go back Jake: red socks and red socks the Celtics are Justin: awesome I mean can't get a break here. How's the Bruins? I don't know So let's go under our one throne pick then we got one throne pick and then we'll let everybody Jake: The rest the season or the rest of the the week where Buffalo at Miami. Uh, you know. Geez. You want me to go or are you gonna go? I mean, is that a watch? Only the people in the AFC East, in other words, the Patriots, the Jets fans are gonna be watching this game because nobody else in the world cares. Justin: This is totally a Steve Tasker game on CBS. Jake: I think this is the game. I don't know. Justin: This is an I in Eagle Steve Tasker combo. Jake: This is the game that the Miami Dolphins can win. I, you know, I just... I don't think Buffalo is that good. They certainly didn't play a powerhouse against us and we know how badly we suck. I think Miami can put up 21 points and beat this team. I think they can keep them to like a 21-17 so that's what I'm gonna call them. I'm gonna say 21-17 Miami. Really? Yeah, I think they can do that. Again, I don't think Buffalo is strong enough and, you know, with a week off and really preparing for it and being an angry team, I think Miami can pull it out. What do you think? Justin: Give me your pick. No, I just think Miami sucks. Yeah, they... I think they suck so much. There's no way. I think Buffalo actually proved themselves last week. They can... beat teams that are better than the Jets. Well, even though, well, Cincinnati did beat us, right? Yeah, so they're better than us. Jake: The only team we've beat has not won a game yet. Justin: Yeah, I think Buffalo is going to beat Miami. I think it'll be close, and I'm going to pick a score similar to yours. I'm going to pick 1917, or I'm going to go Buffalo. Jake: 1970 but will you certainly been doing better in your picks than I have so now maybe I'll change. No, I'm not changing my pick That's why that I changed my he's gotta have something win a freaking game for God's sake
05 Justin: Yeah, when he games so that we could get the first overall pick. Hey, let me propose a scenario for ya. Yeah. Yeah, go for it so Let's just say we get the first overall pick. Yes in the draft yes obviously draft right what yes in the uh in the nfl pro draft with only 10 minutes to make our pick yes um what position do you want Jake: oh frick i actually i don't want a number i don't want a number one pick i say we trade the out of it, let someone else have it, because it's just way too loaded. and you look at the teams that pick up those number one picks, they just don't go anywhere. They don't do anything. It doesn't help the team. Get me down to a 5 or a 10 or 9 or 14, 15. That's where you can do some value. So for me, and no one wants to trade. And that's why you don't see people even trade into number one anymore, because no one wants the number one pick. Justin: Unless it's like the big time quarterback. Jake: But it's. Not even that because you've seen people pass over the big-time quarterback and that big-time quarterback drop. Look what happened to Brady last year. Look what happened to what's his face the year before on the Cardinals. What's his name? Lionart. I mean these big-time quarterbacks, they just drop like stones in the draft because it's just it's such a it's such a large amount of money that I I don't know and then they don't sign cuz I hold out cuz I want more money So you don't even get to use them for that year So then you're basically blowing an entire year anybody you gotta go pick out someone else. I don't know I I would not want a number one draft pick, but if we are I'm not going for quarterback That's the other thing is if you don't need a quarterback then you know Or a big-time position like a running back quarterback. I mean, I don't know. I think we could use a big time running back. I think we could use a run... I mean Thomas Jones is obviously looking like... I don't think it's really all on him. Oh come on, he's done nothing. He's done nothing. He does what he can. He does what he can. Yeah, what? 36 yards? Justin: I don't know. 45 yards? 49 in this past game, we only had 13 attempts. It's not like he gets into the groove or anything. Jake: But they don't give him the attempts because he only gets two yards. So then he gets two yards and they're not going to give him another attempt. Like how many attempts do you give him? You know what you have to do? You have to kick the ball away if you keep giving them attempts. I don't know, I just think he's... I'll be surprised if they sign him again. I don't know how many years I gave him three years, but if we could trade him away and just get some young guy... He's also he is like 30. I don't know the whole thing. It's looking it was looking like a steal. Maybe now I know why the Chicago is willing to give him up for you know, they're not doing all that much better. Trust me Justin: I think I think if the teams could redo it we would take the pick back and they would take
01 Justin: Well, then that's good. I think they would take him back if they were given the opportunity. Jake: I don't know. So what would you pick? I mean, really, the defensive line. I mean, that's your guys. But in the 3-4, they're not as, you know, it's not as much to have like a defensive end, which I'd say that'd be. You could get like a dominating defensive end. Yeah, we could use that. Yeah, or maybe just an incredible wide receiver. but then I don't think wide receiving is really a problem at this point. Justin: No, I don't think so. Jake: Yeah, I see someone on the defensive line. But again, to waste a number one pick on defensive linemen is just like, ugh. You can't pay the sky. Justin: What do you mean, ugh? Jake: Yeah, because they don't work out. They don't work out in that way. You don't hear about the guy you got picked number one, well, you do. You hear about how they bust, Mario Williams. uh... your supermarket nothing to have a sack for ten games of last year you know this year's play a little bit better but it's just the lot of money in a lot of pressure to pay for a guy that you get so much better value down in the in the twenties and or even the second round you know i rather have to i'd rather have a nose tackle in the second round and i middle linebacker in the in the first round you know i rather have to because we need that kind of stuff we need another david harris only big fat guy uh... yeah i was going to be fact that let's trade away the muhl let's true let's tradeaway doing robertson to someone in the fourth three and that's the who's the other guys who's on his way out Oh, some other guy. Just sending everybody out of here. Come on, those guys, they're just not the system. And you and I have this argument about it, but I believe in the 3-4. Otherwise, you know what? Don't go hire a 3-4 coach. That's the thing. We have to believe in the 3-4. It's a dominating defense. It does very well in Super Bowls. It does very well if it's done properly. But let's get the players to do it properly. Let's not just try to fiddle around and put some guys say, oh well he'll learn the 3-4. No he won't. He's not big enough to learn the 3-4. Dwayne Roberts isn't big enough. Vilma isn't big enough. Get the bigger guys, the guys who can play 3-4 and let's get them in here and let's make them play and let's get a good 3-4 defense and that's it. Because otherwise, we're just always... kicking around the wrong personnel so that that would be my suggestion i think holland clemens can lead us let's go yet it's at japan those three chad dulma and when robert said get goodbye get i yeah and let's get some value to use what first the second to fourth you know it's it's a lot of a bunch of pics let's push them in there with next year go for a date night season solidify as a team with a first year quarterback, with a building defense, a fast new defense, and let's build up next year we go the distance. Maybe next year we go eight and eight, but we surprise, maybe go nine and seven, but the year after that we do really well. Hopefully catch the Patriots on some sort of weird decline, because they don't seem to be able to decline.
00 Jake: But that's the way I'm thinking. What about you? What do you think? Justin: Oh geez, you're thinking a lot. Yeah, I know. I, if we had the first overall pick, yeah, again, I don't know the talent pool, but yeah, I would want to pick a defensive lineman, whether it be an end. I guess it would most likely be an end. Or somebody in the ilk of Brian Thomas to basically replace him. Yeah. Like, think about the 3-4 teams that have that guy out there that plays that position and that guy is generally better than what Brian Thomas is even though he seems to be okay. You know, and Marimyn and... and DeMarcus Ware and Roosevelt Colvin, like all those guys that play that position are just better. So if you draft like a big stunt guy like that that can rush the quarterback, that would be good. All right. I would take one of those guys. Jake: Well here it is, you know week 10 And we're talking about the draft It must be wow that sucks. Let's stop. Yeah, it must be good to be a judge fan Well, we got the week off. So all you jet fans out there take it easy Watch the bill watch the Buffalo Miami and realize it doesn't matter who wins You know pay attention to the news come back next week we'll be talking about the upcoming game which will be nice we'll have a whole new fresh set of life and will will be once again back on the the track to hopefully winning a game before the end of the season and that's it otherwise stop by JetKingdom.com read the rest of the thrown picks maybe there'll be a Jester's Keep up there some point Yeah, wouldn't bet on it and You know stop by the forums or send us an email at podcast at Jet Kingdom calm, but until then he's Justin I'm Jake and as always we're saying go Jets
06 Jake: you you
