16 Jake: This is the Jet Kingdom podcast, episode number five. September 18th, 2007, road trip. Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcast. This is Jake on the west coast and on the east coast. Justin: Hey, this is Justin. I'm still here in New York holding down the fort while you hang out there in the sun, the west coast. It's really not that sunny nor warm. Jake: It's actually kind of cold out. But let's get right into it because we've got a lot to cover for the Jets. It's uh... Let's first talk about, first topic is since we were just doing the podcast last week as the Bill Belichick punishment, I'm doing air quotes, came out. Basically Bill Belichick got a $500,000 fine, the Patriots got $250,000 and they might or might not lose the first round draft pick whether they go to the playoffs. What do you think off the bat? Justin: Right off the bat, I think that the penalty that was given was fine. It was you know, okay I agree great. It hits him in the pocket a Little bit. It doesn't really affect the Patriots too much the craps have Billions and billions of dollars, but what I think is even more interesting is is what's gonna come out still, or what has yet to come out, which is kind of what they're gonna have to do with the library of tapes that they've accumulated over the years. I mean, did you hear all the things that Belichick has done and what Manjini has really uncovered? Jake: Yeah, I think that's where I go on this punishment. Again, I'm air quoting. Punishment! I'm gonna say that I'm disappointed. I think this is a point of which Gedel should have come down and he should have been suspended for a game or two. Breaking the rules, something had been set, you have to be suspended. The guy down in Wright, the coach down in Dallas, he was suspended for four or five games. Belichick should have been suspended. Justin: Now great there could be I don't really think this suspending him really does anything though Jake: It sets it you know It does it says it it gets him off the sideline for a game and it makes it a point this guy will not be Coaching for a game or two games or whatever and it makes a point right now. There's no chance There's no change to what they're doing so we talked about last time you said we should take away all the electronics and But but think about it What he did was giving himself an advantage and he broke the rules. Well, when you break the rules of the NFL, that should affect you in a way this season. Something should happen to you. Justin: So what they should do is take away those tapes. Well, I mean all of them, like every single one of those.
02 Justin: Sure. Well, that's their whole entire advanced scouting unit. I mean, in baseball, this is a widely accepted thing that is that. It's just kind of Jake: To have him sit off that field for a game would have been a much better punishment. Find him $250,000 and then I'm gonna sit on the sit out for a game because that's a big thing It's more of a statement than it is how will affect the team But five hundred thousand dollars or ten million dollars doesn't affect the team and a draft next year with a team Justin: That's you know the Patriots who are rich in draft picks like they already have San Francisco's first round pick Which is gonna be better than theirs anyway It's like taking away five, you know, taking away a field goal off a team who's winning 38 to 2. Jake: It just, it doesn't, it's not a big enough fine. But I'll say this, Gedel has said, if they find out more, he'll revisit it. And I think they're gonna find out more. I think they will. This is not, you know, one thing happening. This is a bigger story. So let's just take it, let's wrap it up a little bow and put it over here to the side and say, okay, great. We'll revisit it as it unfolds because it's going to unfold and there's going to be more to this. So we'll come back to that when it gets going. And then sadly, in week two, we had what's going on to the Jets versus Baltimore and the game that was, you know, my setup. Do you have to? I think I said that last week. I think that's exactly what you said last week. Why don't we just replay last week? No, no, no. This was a better game. This was a better game. Well, it's a better fourth quarter. It was a better fourth quarter. So let's set up the thing. You're back in New York. It's all a real game. I took to the team and I went across the country and watched it in a bar in San Francisco. Yeah, we drove a lot of hours south. Justin: You flew across the country. Jake: Yeah, again, I have very bad memories of watching games, Jet Games and bars. The last one I watched on the road was the Patriots. Oh, sorry, that was in New England when I watched them take on the Jaguars last year. And we all know how horrible that ended. So really, I should just stay at home. Yeah, basically. So so the game I guess it was three quarters and one quarter. Chad Pennington was out, Kellen Clins came in, and really, to me, didn't look very good. Well, actually not to me, but to everything, stats wise, whatever. He was pressured, he was sacked four times, and what really bothered me about the way He was being sacked in the first three quarters anyway. was that he wasn't aware. He had no pocket presence. Those guys were coming off not his blind side.
00 Jake: They were coming straight at him. So that means they had to go around his line of sight and they were coming straight at him. I'm sitting there watching him scream going, look at this guy coming straight at you. He was not aware that these guys were coming at him or blessing him. Justin: And you know what he looked like? He looked like a first-time starter a rookie a rookie And that's what he was Yeah, I just give him I mean he played one of the toughest Stingiest most deep defenses in the whole league. I mean like the Patriots. Oh Jake: Just like the Patriots. Yeah How'd you against the Patriots? Well, you did okay. He got sacked, but did he score touchdowns? Did he move the ball down the field? Did he throw interceptions? He did. I mean, yeah, he did all those things. Justin: You know, but you got to give the kid a break. It's his first ever start, you know. It's the first time ever that he's ever taken more than just, you know, garbage time snaps in real, real competition. I'm giving him a break. I think he played lost in the first half, that's for sure. And then in the fourth quarter when Baltimore started to play that, you know, that prevent defense, which is, you know, you know what that stands for, it prevents you from winning. That defense is just... Fat teddies D? Yeah, I mean, so they kind of got away from their blitzing schemes and kind of just, you know, they couldn't get the pressure out of them anymore. It was whether it was the Jets going into a really faster version of their no huddle or whatever it was. They couldn't get as much pressure in his face. Yeah, and they and I think they just kind of dropped back and... Clements has an arm. Oh, yeah, he has an arm. He can wing it, he can throw so It'll be interesting. I think I think He showed some potential there in the second half as to what he could be. Absolutely. I thought okay Jake: So well, I haven't done with my negatives on him. My other negative on him was he just held onto the ball too long. I mean, there was times when he's running backwards down the field. Yeah, that's rookie stuff. And they're chasing him. And he's still holding the ball. He's trying to get away from guys who are pro ballers. It's like, just throw the ball away. Throw it away and live another day. Again, so that was the negatives. Other than that, he stuck it in there. He got up after every play. He made the when he needed to. For the most part, he made the passes. He definitely has an arm. That's all good stuff about him. Another huge disappointment on the team though. Tojo. Tojo. He is just his problem and I watched it. And again, it's different when you, I guess you can watch it in a different place. You watch it differently. Maybe that makes no sense.
01 Jake: He runs up to the line and then he does like a jig. Thomas Jones runs hard and then he stops and he tries to jig back and forth like three times and then he gets tackled. Instead of just hitting the hole and going hard, full steam, every time he gets the ball he just tries to make too many moves. It's like don't make moves. You're not Leanne Washington. Don't make moves. just hit the hole. hit it hard and make your own down in distance. Don't do this little dancing thing. I mean I was just screaming with all the other millions of fans watching the other million games on the same time. I was just screaming like don't dance, run. But that was my take on Thomas. He is, at this point, he's a huge disappointment. I mean 24 temps, 67 yards. Not good. Justin: Again, I'm gonna take a pessimistic view on it. I think, once again, not to take all the credit away from Baltimore, but the Jets offensive line. is not quite good enough to open up enough holes for a guy to run through. And he's just getting used to the system and he had a little injury and he's faced a couple tough defenses. What I don't understand is why it was 24 carries for Thomas Jones and zero for Leon Washington. Leon Washington was not there. for some reason but that's not him that's just the game plan was the game Jake: plan but they didn't they don't know that you know I called man genie hey shonheimer I call man genie I called Brian I said let's get on the call get on the podcast they call into the phone number they message They left me a message and they told me, yeah, no, then no one called. But I don't know. Justin: It was very, very strange. I mean, why when you have this aggressive speedy defense, try some misdirection stuff with a guy like Washington or Brad Smith wasn't really in the game plan. I'm waiting for these two guys who I thought were going to have significant roles on the team this year. Tch, Tch be part of the team waiting for it. I mean, it's been two games, you keep playing it. Well, it's only been two games and they've been two really tough opponents. When we came into the season and we saw the schedule, I thought we'd be one and one. Yeah. I thought win one of these games, but did not think we'd be two. That's true. We both thought that there was a possibility that we could be 0 and 2. So it's not... Too much of a surprise to me. I really do think though that we need to beat Miami Let us let's talk about Miami in a bit. Let's go over some of the yeah, I want to go back over Jake: Let's go to power this is some pause. Well, there's a positive the shorter we should do positive ready for here some positives will
02 Jake: 97 yards. 97 yards. Not 100. Justin: That's the first time I think in a long time the guy hasn't gotten 100 yards on us. That's a positive. Yeah, but it was his first career touchdown reception ever. Jake: He's been in the league for four years. Here's another positive. Caught tree. Jericho Cottree had seven receptions for 165 yards. Yeah, he had a good game. He was tough. He was the guy who if thrown to would catch the ball which sadly brings us back to negatives because the game came down to one final drive and I just want to go over this drive because I was watching it. Probably influenced by a little bit of alcohol, but I was watching it with you know pride and like this is what the Jets can do Here we go. We're getting down there We you know within seven all you do is go down there get the touchdown So we're coming down the field big play by country, you know getting out of getting out of bounds There's all this sort of stuff going on we get down to about I think it's what the 35 I don't have the stats in front of me Justin: It's 35. Okay. Jake: But we're first in 10 from the 35, a minute 8 or a minute 16 or something like that left. We had just thrown the ball, I don't know, four or five times in a row. What do we do? We throw the ball again. So here's what I'm saying, and I don't know, baby, again, I don't know nothing about no football, but if you've got a minute left and you're at the 30, you can take a couple See you next week. a couple runs just to keep it honest. Like if you keep throwing it, all they're going to do is say, okay, these guys aren't going to run at all. We'll just sit on the receivers. That's exactly what they did. So instead of running it one or two plays and maybe getting them off guard because we just thrown five plays in a row, they didn't run. And I was sitting there going, you have the time. You have the time outs. I think we had two time outs. And, you know, 35 yards to go with a minute and eight, plenty of time. That NFL time, that's a lifetime. You could write a book back there. And for some reason they, they didn't do it. And you know what, though? What? You know what, though? What? Justin: The receivers are open. Jake: Well, then we'll go to the other just horrible bit of this. So the receivers are open now. Then there's the two, two, actually three plant. Three passes one to coals he he just drops it could go right wasn't the easiest catch doesn't matter This is his entire job. Then just mccarren's. It's the same thing. That was the worst Justin: That was the worst that one hit him right in the hands Jake: Then we go to the end and if there's one last play, you know, we're getting down there. Let's do it throws it McCarren's doesn't catch it again. So that's two for him pops it up instead And you know, the one-armed bandit catches it in the end zone and game over. Yep. Justin: And that's it. And I'm mad. Okay. So what? Do you know that our defense still hasn't had a sack? Yeah, not a sack, yeah.
00 Justin: How sad is that? It's bad. It's bad. Come on. Someone can, someone gets to the freaking quarterback. Another positive. Jake: Just an explicit podcast. You can say fucking. Get to the fucking quarterback. Exactly. Another positive. Reavis was still all over the place. Very good. He looked, he looked very good. Very good. Good tackler. All right. So let's go on. Let's, I guess let's cover the one thing. Justin Miller did get, um, hurt during the game he is out for the season. J. Mill, our one pro bowler from last year, kick returner, you know was a definite threat out for the season, counting to buy, probably Leon back there for us this season. I'd like to see the kids stuck and get a chance. Well, a lot of people are going to get a chance because Justin Miller is out. It's been nice seeing X season. I mean I don't I don't miss them on defense. I feel for the guy Yeah, that's true. I don't miss them on defense But in the preseason they all they could talk about is how good he's getting how good he's getting then yeah I don't buy it. So anyway, he's out. That's that's a big loss and I guess that leads us right to Well, there's kind of a double topic here. One is Jets versus Dolphins, so we can talk about the Jets versus Dolphins. But before that, let's talk the Chad versus Kellen, because here I am watching Mike and Mike in the morning, and it's quarterback controversy time, and they're saying, you know, New York media is going after them, and the fans want Kellen. And I just wanted to say, on the record right now, first of all, if Chad were in that game last week, we would have won that game. We would have won the game and you know why? Because if they had only scored 20 points, first of all, Chad wouldn't have thrown those two interceptions, maybe thrown one. Secondly, he wouldn't get sacked so many times because he's a little bit better pocket presence. And I think the receivers would have caught balls because you know what? Kellen's whipping them. He's like zinging them in there. I'm serious. Some of those... It was so out of the... So I literally think we would have won that game. He certainly would have done that two minute drill better. I think he just would have been a better game manager. So that's my feeling. That being said, Chad is the starting quarterback. That's the guy who can win games. That's the guy who won us 10 games last year. That's the guy who can win games this year. here. you You know, go rookie go, and if Chad ever goes down, I will be happy to know that Kellen comes back there, but I don't want to see him on the field until next year. And I want to see him in preseason, and I want him to beat out Chad if Chad doesn't go off to KC, which is some big bad rumor. But I just, I want that out there. Justin: What do you feel about it? I think, I like Chad as a starting quarterback, just to quickly answer the question. but You know, I wouldn't mind seeing, you know, Callen Clemens push chat a little bit this season. Absolutely. I mean, he showed me enough to to believe that he'll probably be
02 Justin: the starting quarterback within the next two or three years. Jake: Yeah, I just think if you look at the two games and I know it's it's. It's difficult because there are different defenses in different times, but you look at the Patriots game and the Ravens game. The Patriots aren't slopters on defense. They kept Ladanian talents into like 42 yards or something. They shut them down completely. It was only until they were up 30 something to four or whatever it was, seven, that they let them score, I think, two touchdowns. But they're a very good defense. And Chad was... doing okay against that very good defense. Of course our defense couldn't get him on the field enough, but he did okay. He did two touchdowns, zero picks, 130 rating. Then you throw Kellen in there, he's throwing picks. You know, he has one touchdown. I just, I don't know, I just think that it's great. He'll get better in time, but it's not his time this year. And if we want to make this year turn into something, We better get going and we get going with the dolphins. That's who we get going with. Yeah, everyone gets going against the dolphins. So the dolphins are in trouble. I mean, they're a suck Trent Green through four interceptions last week. They they got beat by the Cowboys. They barely beat the well, they didn't beat, but they got beat by Washington. They don't look like a very good team. Ronnie Brown doesn't look very good. Justin: He looks like he's terrible. This will be a good test for the Jets defense. They better hold Ronnie Brown to like 50 yards. And this is a good test for Thomas Jones. This is a time that he can run the ball. Jake: And this is a good time for Chad to come back. I mean, I don't want to say this is not going to be a blowout because we don't blow teams out. That's just not our style. We don't have that kind of, we don't have those weapons. But this is a team, we could get up on them. get a good 14-0 lead into the halftime kind of thing and keep it that way. They'll get three and then we'll get another three, then they'll get seven, then we'll get another seven, then we'll get another seven, that kind of thing. But keep it a good distance away, so it's never really close. Um... What do you see? We don't have the film picks up this week because they don't come out till Thursday But what do you how do you see this game going? Justin: Well, I really don't want to imagine the Jets starting the season off 0 and 3, you know And you know prior to the season started I did pick the Jets to win this game and I'm gonna stick with that obviously I'm gonna like I think I said to you in the first podcast if we pick every game before every week I'm gonna pick the Jets every week so I'll pick the Jets this week yeah I honestly I I really really really really really want to see the defense just come out and stop the dolphins the dolphins Their offense is miserable. Yeah, if the Jets defense cannot come out and give a good performance
03 Justin: I mean they really did make Kyle bowler look good this week, which troubles me well Kyle Bull isn't exactly horrible. Let's not come on Well he's not. Well he's not good. He threw two TDs and no interceptions. What does that say about our defense? Oh no that's true. We had one I think that he caught up. And they look awful in week one. They didn't look too great this week. They still haven't sacked the quarterback. So this is it. With all that said though, this is the chance for them to show up. on the ground has. done anything all season. The Dolphins have nothing going on. Their defense is finally, you know, I mean, I guess they're looking older. They're looking older. They still play decent, but they're looking older. I really would like to see, I hope it's Chad playing quarterback. I'd like to see him come out and, you know, towards this team up. Yeah. And I agree. Jake: And the only my only worry about this is well, multiple worries, but they're all packed into one. That's why I said only. Is that it's the AFC East. It's a division rival, which means you never know. It doesn't matter. They could be 0 and 10. We could be 10 and 0 and they could still win. So you can't take this game lightly just because they're bad. We have to play this game like it's the last game on the planet. The other thing is they're desperate. So, desperate teams sometimes play desperate. Last year they were desperate. They went into Chicago and they beat the Bears. So desperate teams can win. So, if things go wrong forever, it's the turnover game, it's whatever. If things go wrong, they can go wrong. I don't see this as just a blowout. I think this is a game that we can win and if the Jets do this game then there's a couple games coming up. I think it's then it's Giants and then Redskins, something like that. So I think it's a couple games that you know you could maybe put together a kind of two and two, three and two situation there which would be nice. Justin: Oh we're going to Buffalo and then we're air quote going to the Giants. So it was a winnable Jake: Winnable and then I think reds can so winnable winnable winnable after that. It's silly actually Oh, you got your I gotta get my schedule out Justin: Yeah, your NFC conference teams a little makes that's a time zone over here It must be in San Francisco. We play differently. Yeah, I'm not touching that one Well, speaking speaking of the other kingdoms and schedules Very good Buffalo is playing New England this week. So, there is a... It's AFC East Week. Yeah, it is. That's a good week, actually. Miami Jets and Buffalo is playing New England and New England. I wish I didn't. I'm in a suicide pool. Jake: And I did pick the Jets because I took all or nothing. I'm putting all my chips on the table on this one. That's crazy. But looking at the Buffalo Patriots, I wish I picked the Patriots.
02 Jake: Yeah, that looks like a no-brainer, doesn't it? A team that scored three points last week and just doesn't look very good at all against Justin: a team that just doesn't look stoppable. Yeah, if I've ever seen a candidate for a 38-3 route. Yeah, it's going to be the norm. Here it is. Is it in New England? good. Yeah it is. Oh that's just horrible. But again, AFC East, you never know, it could be one of those turn around weird things. Last kick, five seconds. I don't know, New England looks so good right now. They do. Buffalo, I mean, like I said. They should put everybody on Randy Moss and just let the rest of it just go. I'm gonna keep going to the things that I've said in the past. JP Lassman is definitely one of the... Worst five starting quarterbacks in the league without a doubt. It's rough. I say he's my bottom Jake: He's in the bottom tier. He's not in top 10 not in top 20. He well, maybe he's the bottom of top 20 Bottom yeah bottom that was me taking a sip of my beer Which we're not talking about because everybody wants this we got some feedback this week. We'll slip the other listeners know from the sum of the listeners the few listeners looks like we're hanging around 20 but when he was 20 listeners but when I look at the stats for how many people are downloading the actual like hitting all the episodes yeah it peaks at like 60 70 uh a day. So I don't know if that's people getting the older episodes, but it looks like about 20 or so listeners consistently, which is good. So, you know, that's good. So all 20 of you. We love you. Two of us of Justin: them are probably us but... Got to go back. What? I lost you. I have you. You're there. Now you're here, but I missed like a bunch of stuff that you were saying doesn't matter it's been recorded This is the beauty of podcasting over the internet. Oh my god. That's amazing. It is amazing Jake: So doesn't even matter it doesn't fix it in both straight fix it in post very good. You're max break weekly That in other kingdoms, so I guess that's it with the Patriots as the bills We're not doing picks because it's not Thursday which we probably won't ever do picks very often, but we kind of know what we think. Justin: But news around the league a little bit. Couple big signings. Yeah, today, what do you think about Tank Johnson? Tank Johnson going down to the Cowboys. I'm more interested in the left-wing one. I think about the left-wing. Funny! Interesting. You know what? I think... left which needed somewhere to go and it landed needed a quarterback. Voila! Yeah. I mean, the guy is a legit starting quarterback. His teams have won games in the past. I think Jacksonville is probably a little bit upset at themselves right now because they are floundering. Yeah. and he can't score the ball. So I think Atlanta filled the need right here that they definitely needed. The Joey experiment is over. He probably won't start this week though. Jake: He can't come.
00 Jake: He sucks. He can't go in there. I just remember last year during the Dolphins game when he was starting. Oh gosh. Justin: Then they had to bring in Cleo Lemon. Screaming. Anytime Cleo Lemon's in the game, you know you're in trouble. Anyway. Yeah, and then Tank Johnson, I guess, is going to the top. Well, they needed to sign him because they lost one of my favorite ex-Jets, Ferguson, in the first game to injuries. They needed somebody to play the nose tackle in that 3-4, and Jerry Jones has a history for taking a shot on some of these questionable players. 20 oh recently and You know he figured he needed him and he didn't care He's suspended for the first eight games, so you can't even play till week nine And that's when they'll get him back. I guess I guess if they want to deal with that crap You know Chicago cut him So, you know, he was worthy of being caught by another team because of his shenanigans. If you're willing to take that on, then I'll be it. Jake: I think that's kind of all the news and all the pieces for our road trip here. We'll do some Jet Kingdom news. As always, the thrown picks go up on Thursday. You can always check the game and review, which goes up either Monday or Tuesday. So those are two things. We're looking forward to the next Gesters... Gesters Keep. Gesters Keep, which should be up... It's coming. Now, I'm sure it's up soon enough. The other thing we wanted to say is if you want to email us about the podcast and tell us, all 20 of you, and tell us how much you love us, go ahead. It's podcastatjetkingdom.com. And if you want to call in, we kind of forget about this every week, but we have a system here. where you can call in, leave a, and we will listen to them. And depending on whether we can figure out whether they're interesting, not just our parents. We will put them into the some way or just answer them. If we listen to them, we might just write down what they are and answer them. So if you have questions, if you wanna ask us why we do this or. why we're still doing it with only 20 people listening, call in. The number is 206-984-3473. That's 206-984-3473. And what I will do is I'll try to put that also in the show notes and in the ... title of the podcast Which I've seen so if it's in the title of the podcast then you'll be able to see it in every podcast episode And it'll be easier to call Smart yeah, I know sometimes You have some moments. I do have moments Few and far between the three hours difference tooping Justin: Not so much with the schedule because I'm not getting that and I think that's about it Is there anything else you kind of want to say do you want to say hi to the people? Hi people. All right. I didn't know we had so many people. Yeah. Well now you gotta say goodbye to the people really exciting Jake: All right, I'm Jake and that is Justin and we are the Jet Kingdom podcast and see you next week
08 Jake: Music
