12 Jake: This is the Jet Kingdom Podcast, episode number 6 for September 25th of 2007, Trent Who. So welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. I'm Jake. And this is Justin. And this is the podcast about the rulers of the AFC East, the New York Jets. Well welcome back to the land of the living. So first thing off the bat let's talk about the Jets versus Miami Dolphins. For the first time Justin: I have a smile on my face when I talk about the previous week's game. Jake: That's true. Justin: I haven't been actually wanting to talk about the previous game. I've always been looking forward to the next game. Jake: We go week by week here. This is a week by week game, a week by week season, and a week by week show. So let's get first thing first thing first. the almost the exact same time this week it was brutal let's just say you know plan ahead if you're a jet fan going to the games go early Justin: go often. Yeah absolutely I actually got to witness this from both ends because I was with you coming into the stadium with the parking pass and then I left with my father who I happen to be sitting with and he did not have a parking pass so I got to experience getting on the coach bus. to take you to the lot by the continental airlines and then hopping on a yellow bus for about two and a half-miles to the middle of nowhere and then you know sitting in the car Jake: and waiting for the GW bridge. Totally brutal. Totally brutal. But we'll move beyond because you know what it was worth the wait. I actually got to listen to and enjoy the post game show. Justin: Yeah there you go. It was worth the wait. Jake: because the Jets won. Let's just get this out of the way straight up from the from the get-go. Jets win 31-28. You know, if anything rules this game, it's a game of firsts. There's a lot of firsts in this game. So let's talk about the first half, which had a lot of firsts in it. uh... first thing out we had was the uh... first sack of the near jets two thousand seven season which is my sean ellis the forgotten one what do you think about that we think about the sean ellis coming out there making that sack Justin: yeah we need it uh... we haven't had a sack all season to be in game three and
03 Justin: not have a second is pretty sad sad yeah uh... we actually we we got a lot more pressure on the quarterback even though only that sack by ellis we got a whole lot more pressure in general. So Ellis got to the quarterback, Vilma got to the quarterback, Kerry Rhodes got to the quarterback. Other people got involved and got into the backfield and that caused a little chaos and that's something that just did not happen in the first couple weeks. Jake: Yeah, it's so nice when it does happen. I'll say we right into the next first thing we had, we had the first lead of the 2007 Jets season. in. where Chad threw two coals in the corner and a beautiful pass and We went up seven zero which was again another first and just a beautiful thing to see and a witness I was surprised by that play because as I saw it It reminded me exactly of the play in the Patriots where they had I didn't mean a lot of that too They played it twice. Remember they played it once he dropped it and then he got they just went right back through the same pass So right Jack Warner. It's just a little you know, it's a the wob almost right in the corner of the state to the to the back corner yeah where only he can catch it hi is just beautiful i've seen the just do that so many times and painting doesn't beautifully uh... it throws that also nice because Justin: usually to be effective with with uh... throw like that or play like that you need a receiver that's like six three six four random lost T.O. Somebody who can push off a little bit and be bigger physically. He does it with like Lavergne's Coles and Jericho Cottree who are tough but like 5'10". So you know he's, we all know he has the touch ball. Yeah he does. That's one of his best throws in his repertoire. Jake: And just talking about the Chad for a moment here, I mean this is, for the game he goes 15-22, 124 yards. Doesn't seem like a lot but two touchdowns. runs for a touchdown and was an efficient game and various chip and no interceptions and i think that's what he's always going to give you game in a game out he might not throw the long boil not throw four hundred yards is not going to that but he'll manage that game very well and i it always impresses me and i was so glad to see him back in there uh... but we have another fun thing to talk about well not so much fun in that uh... justin millers out for the season but other someone out back in the backfield to made us a justin who And what just happened there? Me? Who? Justin: You know, I think I said this before, I always love referencing things that I've said in the past. Because, especially when I get proved right, it's the system with that run back. From Chad Morton on, we've been incredible at running the ball back. Westhoff just has whatever scheme he thinks up, either they put more time into it, they consider it... an equal third of the team. They put a lot of time and effort into it so the Jets special teams always show up. You know teams like we're playing next week, the Bills, these kinds of games they win or lost on special teams. So watching Leon do that was just impressive. I mean I think you put anyone with speed and vision
03 Justin: who's good out in space like Leon Washington and they're gonna do good in that run back system. Jake: Absolutely. Don't take it away from Leon though, man. The guy... I won't take it away from him, but... Justin: I mean, hey, Miller ran two of them back last year. I think there's something he said about that. Leon's already got one. Alright, I'm sorry. Justin Miller ran two back last year, and Morton ran a bunch back in that system. Jake: That is true. But anyway, it was a great way. And then right before the half, you know, dolphins come back, score some points, but right before the half, the two minute drill, Chad's down there, throws another fade right over the top of everybody just in the most uncatchable place, but only by Chris Baker, touchdown maker, to end the half with two seconds to go on the clock. I mean, what more could you want in a first half? Does Chris Baker have the best hands on the team? He will certainly after the Baltimore game. I'd have to say yes Justin: I have to say yes, you remember that catch he made last year against Cleveland that was oh not fair Unfairly not called a force out that would have tied that game I felt an incredible catch and he makes them really really good. He really does Jake: He is turning into one of these guys who you We don't think about him as just a star on the team, but he's turning to a guy who I now think about as a star, and if he were hurt or something, I'd go, you know, he is someone we want on that team, and he is just amazing. He's made, I think, three touch talents, one in each game, yeah? Uh, either two or three. I don't know if he caught one in the first game. I don't think he did. No, you're right, because Cole said both of them. Right, right, right. But he had that beautiful one in the Baltimore game, and he had one in his head. So, I mean, again, a great half. We come back and I guess, you know, the second half was kind of what I learned to expect from the Jets last year and maybe the year before that and the year before that. This is not a man genie thing. It's not a Hermet would sing. Maybe it's just a jet thing. It's that we just don't have the ability to put a team away other than the few times we've done it. Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs, Green Bay before the playoffs. That was a bunch of years ago now though. Now we're looking back. You're reminiscing. I'm a bunch of years old. But we just don't have that ability and maybe it's just we don't have the defense. That's clearly what came out of this game. We don't have the defense to stop. We made Ronnie Brown look like Lidamian Thomas. Justin: Yeah, you know, Ronnie Brown, before this game, or, I mean, they didn't play too many games, only two games, but had not rushed for more than 35 yards, and had not gained more than 75 yards total for a game. And he gained over 200 yards against us, over 100 on the ground, and almost... 99 yards receiving and then three touchdowns. We did make him look We made him look like he deserved to be the second overall pick Oh plant everyone in Miami was questioning him up until this game I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to being what he was though I think we just have an inability to stop the run clearly right Jake: acquisition clearly i mean this crew that they're clearly a problem there i
02 Jake: mean they you know you look at the food scores and it's seven and then thirteen fourteen and then and basically we score three and seven and third fourth and then we let them score fifteen points in the fourth quarter i mean yeah they had the chance to gain an onsite kick with almost ability to get it they they you know i they they almost got that ball so just really you know not a good thing that the fence a typical Jets thing that's kinda your it's just a typical Jets win he key albiter to the end can't put the team especially gets a dolphin's I guess that's the thing I mean we're gonna see this this is what we're gonna see look like we did last season not male blood teams will be able to win but won't be able to pull them out Disappointing to watch that I must say even with because we had a 31 to 13 lead at one point And we've got them back in the game. I will say that uh, I never really thought that it all things could do it I mean, this is not a high-powered team So I didn't think they were gonna come down and score against us I remember when indie when we went up against indie last year. I thought this team will come back and beat us This is you know, India's a tannic and do that Justin: You leave them a little too much time or something. Yeah, we left them over we left them over two minutes Jake: I mean but with the Dolphins I just didn't even think they could pull it all together and they didn't Another nice thing to know other nice things in the game notes and then we can go on to other stuff But Chad's run for TD on the quarterback draw was was beautiful. He went in untouched Um, I just- Who loves Chad Pennington? Yeah, yeah, total. Justin: It's a level shirt. The show that I was thinking that deserved to be spoken about before Chad's TD run was Thomas Jones' arrival. Oh yes. Jake: Welcome aboard Thomas Jones. Welcome Thomas. I'm sorry you had to sit out those first two games for your suspension. Welcome Thomas. Welcome. He came out. Justin: And him and the offensive line dominated the third quarter. Where we took our lead, it was Thomas. We rode Thomas Jones. 25 yards. And that's why you see that Chad only threw for 120, 130 yards because he didn't have to. We were controlling the ball. We were running, running, running, running, running the ball down Miami's throat. and You know, as Jason Taylor said, they saw. Jake: He actually said, he said, I suck. He said, I suck. He said, you know what, I suck. So I'm going to take that little clip and I'll play it every time for my wife, who was with me at the game and sat next to me until the third quarter. And then she moved about 10 seats away because she couldn't handle it anymore. Maybe my dancing was getting a little much for her. But we're okay now. We've made it over it. We've gotten over it. And just the last note, so welcome back Thomas Jones. But let's just put this quarterback controversy to bed. For now, for this game, at least for this week, because it will probably raise its head up if Chad ever throws an interception for, you know, because he hasn't thrown one yet, knock on wood. But let's just call it a game. You know, Chad Payne is the starting quarterback and the best quarterback we have.
00 Jake: and that's it. Let's just call that. Okay. Done. Done. And so let's move on. Let's move on to the next game coming up, which, if anything, could look like a trap game. It's the Jets versus the Bills in Buffalo. Justin: Do you know that this is my favorite game of the season? Jake: Yes. As someone who spent much time, I like to call it, in purgatory up there. Yes, I understand that. Justin: I have one favorite game. of all the 16 games that the Jets play in a season, this is my absolute favorite game. I wish it was later on in the year, but it'll have to do. Jake: Yeah, you know, this is one of those games, again, we don't have a good run D, they have a good runner. But that's about it. Like, that's the part that I see as the matchup. Everything else is kind of up in the air. JP Lawson's out of the game. They got, you know... Justin: As if he's any good though. I'd almost rather him be there because I don't know about this other guy. I know JP Lassman sucks ass. Like I know JP Lassman, we will like we'll beat you if you're starting JP Lassman. Jake: Trent Edwards, number five quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. He's 6'4", 231 pounds, 23 years old, born in 1983. He went to Stanford. Last week he came in. JP went down after the first play. He was one and one for four yards and then he was out. And then in comes this guy. He goes 10 for 20, 57 yards, one interception, one sack. And they lost, what was the score that they lost to Pats? I don't even know if they're allowed to say that. Justin: They lost by like 30 something, or 20 something. Jake: Yeah, 38 seven, they lost by 31 points, yeah. Justin: Yeah, so this guy lost by that much and he still only attempted 20 passes? Yeah. Like what do they do? Jake: Yeah, well I think they just were getting demolished. So they just handed the ball off anyway? Yeah, marshmellens. So this guy sucked too, come on. We always play good up in Buffalo. Justin: Really it used to be the other way around we used to suck. I feel like I feel like we play good in Buffalo and For some reason Buffalo beats us at home Jake: Huh, I feel like that's the way it's gone the last couple of years I think last year that that was the way it went last year, but maybe that's why I'm thinking well. Well the year before that We actually the year before that it was reversed. We lost up there then we won It was the last game of the season we won against them. But anyway, so I don't know. I mean, I don't know how to look at this game other than, the only thing is it's AFC East. It's a rivalry. It's a division. You know? Justin: It could go either way with these games. Jake: But it's so many unknowns. They lost their first pick, their tight end, to injuries out for the season. They lost their fourth. Lee Evans is nothing this year. Justin: Well, they don't have anybody so I mean Lee Evans has been reduced to he has 29 receiving yards over the first three games This is a guy who's like a thousand yard receiver Jake: 30 yards over the first three games their last in terms of passing yards per game. You know what the passing yards is Justin: And it's like 150 at the most
02 Jake: 92 92 per game now granted they went up and they played Pittsburgh Who cares and they play an accident you should throw by more than four more than that Lydani and Tomlinson get throw for more than that. Oh, you don't talk about him He's having a bad year, but and then again and then against the run if you look at their stats They're their defensive stats. I mean, they're down there too. They're letting people they're letting people walk all over them So I mean, I just I don't know. I this is a weird game I hope we don't take it. Yeah, they're letting up 170. Justin: I'm afraid it looks like we should win. Jake: Yes, it looks like we should win. So, since we don't, the throne picks go up on Thursday. So what do you think? You think the Jets are going to win this game? Justin: You won't make yours because the precious throne picks haven't gone up. Alright, I'll make them now. Jake: I'll make them now. I'll make my throne pick and I'll just write it up. Let's see, precious throne pick, Buffalo Bills, in Buffalo. I think it'll be close. Think it'll be within six. I think we will score though Win might be a factor. I'm gonna call it 2317 23 17 23 17 Jets win Jets win and you're gonna go Justin: Yeah, I actually think that this is one of the one of the games that we can do a quasi blowout I'm gonna go Jake: I'm gonna go 27 10 27 10 so after all that talk of how we never boil things out boil people out you're gonna now say that yeah Justin: I'm gonna go with this one. I think cuz I just don't think Buffalo is gonna be able to score I think if we could get up by 14 against Buffalo Jake: that's it that's probably they don't have training and they don't have Justin: running around what they did last last last week they lost by 31 points in the guys still only completed 10 passes yeah I mean yeah I'm gonna come back like if you're down 14 points and only be completing 10 passes for a whole game Jake: for under 100 you're not gonna be able to. I guess so I guess that's it we'll just we'll call it in you've got your pick I've got mine the the thrown picks will go up on uh on Thursday morning but let's go on to other stuff let's go on to the other kingdoms there are certainly a lot of other news items in the uh in the NFL we can talk about First of all, because they're in our division and because they're just the unspoken, I mean, talk about the domination of the Pats, it does continue. Brady's putting up, not even pro ball numbers, he's putting up record breaking numbers if he keeps this up. Justin: Yeah, he really is. When you look at it, it's actually disgusting. Jake: It is a little disgusting. I'm sure all you fantasy football people out there are kicking yourself for going with. Two Breeze. In other quarterback stuff, I mean, we have the first time ever, and I think probably the best thing for Chicago, Grossman is officially out.
00 Jake: Is he officially out? He's officially out. I think it was enough. As of when? It was really... Alright, I'm going to look it up. I'm breaking here and typing. I did actually pull it up before the game but And heard a greasy to replace gross men as quarterback for bears Breaking news, duh duh duh. Well breaking news on NFL posted four hours ago. Whatever. What do you think about that? What do you think? Well, did you watch the game the other night? They need to Justin: Ah, Grossman is so bad. I mean, he's so bad. I was watching. I mean I was watching the game and I'm sitting there I'm like Maybe this guy isn't too terrible in the first half because it was close and I was like, oh he hasn't killed them And then they come out in the second quarter and Dallas is offense is so good. I'm actually really worried about playing Yeah, that's true. They're often so good. They pound you they just pound the hell out of you with those two running backs and Tio and and Romos running all over the place and Chicago's defense was dead tired and What does Grossman do on the very next play? He comes out and throws an interception for a touchdown after Dallas and just scored a touchdown. Game over in the third quarter. That's basically the worst thing you could possibly do. He did it. Jake: That's true. I like that they spell his name Rex as in WRE. Cks, we're Grossman in the papers in Chicago. Yes, he's out and then you know other You know, it seems like some of the dominating teams as always happens in the NFL not really parody But what happens the Saints are 0 and 3 and look horrible Justin: They look terrible and they were dealt a blow deuce Macalester out for this. Yeah, you know what as flashy and as Great as Reggie Bush He's not, he can't carry the load by himself. He's not there kind of running back. He's more of a swing it out, throw it to him in open space kind of guy. Jake: Interesting, there's a comparison on Jett Nation forums today about... Big shout out to Max and Chet Nation. That was about Reggie Bush vs. Lee and Washington last year. And Leon had better numbers for the year. Not as many receiving numbers. Justin: A very similar kind of player. Out in space, quick, fast. But you know what? Reggie Bush isn't That much faster than anybody else at this level college would watch him play He was so much faster than anybody else He would just run around everybody or run in a circle and he could just run faster than anybody in the pros He just gets tackled. So I mean he has to make an adjustment to this kind of game where he's not going to be that much faster than anybody else. It's kind of like Leon. I mean, it's the same way. Leon's a little guy, but he's fast as hell, Jake: and he's good in open space. Speaking of other fast running backs having a problem, problems in San Diego. This is a team that's 1 and 2. Lidania Thompson's being shut down.
06 Jake: i mean is this a hangover from last year is this just i don't know i mean i look at this team thinking this is a team that you know like the cults like the patriots probably not like the saints but you know the team i thought was going to come back and do pretty well this year and they don't look too good Justin: oh north turner is not the greatest head coach of the world yeah He's historically been an amazing offensive coach, offensive coordinator, and a not very good, less than average head coach. They made a big mistake in the off season when it wasn't the fact that they let Marty Schottenheimer go. They fired him. Well, that's what I mean, let him go, fire him. It's not that they fired him. Jake: There's a difference between letting someone go and firing somebody. They fired a 12 and 4 coach. 14 and 2, buddy. Oh, sorry. 14 and 2 coach. Justin: But it was the way that they did it. They waited too long and both the coordinators left, Cam Cameron and Pete Phillips, and they both got head coaching jobs elsewhere. They had two head coaches NFL head coaches sitting there that both knew the respective systems and they both left. And now they had to hire somebody else and replace all those coaches. It's not the same team. It's not coached the same way. It's not, it, North Turner is clearly not a head coach. Jake: Hey, good news for San Diego. They might be able to get Cam Cameron back next season. Because if, if, if, the way he's going right now, I think they're up. Miami takes on Raiders this week. I don't know, you could see an 0-5, 0-6, 0-17. He might not last. Do you think Dante sticks it to Miami this week? Yeah, I think he does. I think he does. I think he's gonna, and especially there, yeah, I think they're gonna pick up some. I hope so. What do you think Oakland beats Miami? I think Oakland beats Miami. I wouldn't put it in my suicide pic, but I would, but if they were a nice spread, I might take it. And the last thing is the pack. Where'd the pack come from? We got a- Justin: Oh, Brett Favre looks like a young Brett Favre all of a sudden. Jake: So, you know, he looks like he's taken, you know, a human growth thing or something. He just looks young and jumping all over, and I'm glad to see it, because my wife keeps saying he should retire, and I say, you know, you play until you can't play anymore. until someone kicks you off the field and this is the reason why he should keep playing. He's playing great. Their defense is sticking it too, which is helping his game out, but a lot of young talent there. This might not be his last year and next year might not be his last year. He could go another two years. It's crazy, but he could. Justin: Sorry, he might just keep doing this retiring thing because you get all that love and you don't have to work as hard in training camp. Jake: The only thing I'll say about that is that the Packers organization has consecutively screwed him over in terms of not picking people to help him out because they were kind of working on the theory that he might not be there.
01 Jake: I mean, Aaron Rodgers, why'd they pick up Aaron Rodgers now? Now he's been sitting there for two, three years now? It's okay. Guys can sit there. Yeah, but he might sit there for another two and then he's got no value. He's got no value. That's not true. Hey, does Tony Romo have value? He sat there for four years. He sat there for three. This is his fourth year. Chad sat there for three years. I mean, guys can sit. It's okay. I don't know. All right. Give him a better running back. Give him a wide receiver. Give him someone else. But anyway. So, that's that and I think we're kind of wrapping it up here. We do have a couple new things on, well not new things, but new items to discuss. Let's always talk about the Jet Kingdom podcast email, which is podcast at jetkingdom.com and I want to say, as you pointed out, we got our first one.
