16 Jake: This is the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Thursday, September 18th, 2008. Man Up Monday. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. As always, on this side of the digital aisle, it is Jake. And on the other side, wearing a similarly green t-shirt, I think, is the main partner in crime, Justin. Justin: As always. You announced me this time. I usually announce myself. Oh well. Whatever. That's alright. Jake: I was gonna call you the King of Swing. I don't even know what that means. Justin: Yeah, it's a little peculiar. Let's keep going. Jake: Alright, so we had a game. We did? We had a game. You know, as the long time listeners now, since we've been going for over a year now. We'll maybe figure out there's a little madness, a little method to our madness that when we win a game, we like to do the podcast earlier, meaning earlier in the week on a Tuesday or even a Monday night we've done. When we lose a game, we like to let the sour taste of loss just flow through us for a couple days together. Justin: We like it to be more looking forward to the next game than looking back on the previous game. Thank you. Jake: So, there you go. Justin: I thought you guys would like that too anyway. Jake: Yeah, I mean it's Thursday. Basically what happened last week isn't important anymore, but since we are JET's podcast, let's talk about the game that was. You know, it was highly anticipated. It was the... Sort of the swapping of quarterback roles. I mean for the first time in a long time When the Patriots came to us on our home opener, they weren't the one with the better quarterback You know, we have the Brett Broadway Brett the far of magic and they had Matt Castle. Yeah It just sucks that they won. Yeah, you know they won Justin: 2001 Patriots style They really did. They went back to the basics and they won by playing better football. Yeah, they didn't do anything spectacular. They didn't blow me away. I wasn't overly impressed with them, but they beat us on defense and special teams. And that's really how they beat us. I mean field position, special teams, and just playing solid football. No mistakes. Jake: Yeah, you could throw in penalties. You know, they didn't commit and that's the thing they played solid football. Justin: I don't think they even committed a penalty. Did they commit a penalty? Two penalties for ten yards. So two bullshit penalties.
02 Justin: What did we do? We had six for 60 yards. Oh, see, that's a disgrace. That's how you lose football games. You do that. Yeah. And you lose the field position battle, which is insane how badly they beat us with field position. Jake: They're basically just kicking it through the end zone every single time. And we're not even running back. Justin: Every single time. Jake: I mean, how insane is that? This was a game that I didn't go the way I thought it would. I mean, you know, okay, did I think we'd win? Yes, I thought we'd win. But I also just, I mean, I don't know, I thought we would do things that we weren't able to do. I thought we'd be able to get to Castle and make him make a mistake. He didn't make a mistake. I thought we'd be able to, you know, kind of... Mean I thought we'd be able to throw the ball I thought you know we'd have far about there and and and and go after their secondary which has nobody on it yet We couldn't do that. So we you know, it was it was a I mean Brett Farf goes 16 or 18 for 26 for 181 yards I mean, that's this Chad's numbers. I think this is my feeling of this game. It's like Whoever packed the playbook together for the start of the game said, all right, so I got my playbook. And they just put it in their knapsack to take down the field. And when they pulled it out, they're like, oh, man, I brought the Chad playbook. No, you know what? Justin: I'm going to disagree a little bit with you here. Jake: Wait a second. The telling signs of the Chad playbook is when you're at? First and goal on the three-yard line with wait wait wait a second. Let's let's let's review who we have on our team We have Brett Favre one of the best red zone quarterbacks in the history of the NFL and then Sitting next to him who's played with him for whatever seven years. We've bubble Franks one of the best all-time red zone touchdown leading tight ends and let's add in the fact that we have Thomas Jones who scored one touchdown all last year and what do we do three times in a row I would suggest we throw the ball why don't we go see if Brett Favre and Bubba Jones I mean it's just ridiculous Justin: you're on the rant stop it Stop it. You're ranting. Let me let me interject. I agree. That was poor Play calling on the on the part of the Jets, but there is an overarching theme to this game Even bigger than that and that is suck a dude suck a dude on the part of the special teams Let me read a very disturbing statistic Our first drive, we start from our own 20, and we miss a field goal. Okay? We would have been winning the game at that point, 3-0. You suggested we go for it, even though it was like a 31 yard field goal. You suggested we go because fieldy sucks, and actually you were right.
01 Justin: We shouldn't. Yeah. Because you missed the field goal and that was really bad. But after that, so our starting field position there was the 20. The next drive we start at the 20. The next drive we start at the 20. The next drive, guess what? We start at the 20. The drive after that, we actually started at the 25 with a minute six left in the first half and we went nowhere. Then in the third quarter, we actually got the ball at the 23. And then the next drive at the 20. The next drive, the 20. The next drive, the 20. That's how we started. That's bad. That's awful. And you know what? I'm looking at where New England started their drives and they started two, three, four, five drives in our side of the field. That is special teams losing the game. That's incredible or their special teams winning the game You know what it it might not be our special teams losing because you know what beyond Washington can't return the ball if it's out of the end zone, but still Jake: The putting games nowhere have a quarterback. We do have a quarterback, but they have a deal the fucking Justin: name their three starting corners. I don't have to, they played well. Exactly. You know what, Lavergia's calls didn't help by dropping at least two, maybe three passes. That was terrible. And every time we Jake: threw it down there for the most part, we got something, right? I mean that coterie play that was a freaking horrible call, but anyway it was called back. Like that's the thing, that's the thing that I think a Parcells, and maybe it's just me, but Parcells would have called that exact same play and said, you know what? go for them again. They're not ready for this, do it again. And we never had the ball sack to do it again. If you're going to run three plays at the three yard line to score a touchdown, you better run that fourth play. Don't you not run that fourth play? Because if you're trying to stuff it down their throat, you prove that you can do it. It just makes me sick, sick, sick. Tony Richardson... Why didn't we give the ball to him at the wall at the three? Justin: Didn't we just pick up this guy is like this huge fullback Running back that can do that obviously Thomas Jones as I've said in the past is not a good running back He might gain yards, but he's not scoring touchdowns. He's proved that you need a big guy to just run through the fucking... Just follow Richardson. Boom. In the endzone. I know a specialist, a one yard specialist. Jake: Let's talk about a few things that I think were positive. Justin: And then we'll go on to our... Those were two rants by both... Have we both ranted at the same time? Kind of about different things. Jake: Maybe. I don't really care. Fuck you. Justin: Hey. Geez. You know, this is what happens when we lose. Jake: God. Some positive things. Revus. Played really well. Covering moss. Really well. Dead-on balls accurate. Some negative things. Coles dropping balls. Oh man.
01 Justin: What the hell is that? But... you Caught a ball before cuz I think he dropped three and they were open. He should have caught them Jake: Yeah, no, they were like in his hands drops not like over his head Justin: You expect anyone to make you know not you would expect you know stuck he had four receptions. He would have bought those balls Jake: Stucky was, again, just a playmaker. I love Stucky. And the other person I thought was really good, a nice chemistry coming along, was Dustin Keller. I mean, he didn't do a ton. He had one catch for 19 yards, but what I loved about him, when he caught that ball, he then got up and the guy was trying to tackle him and he made another three or four yards. like he actually fought for it and I thought I like him. He's going to be something. Justin: You know, you know, we were at the game, obviously, and and we were sitting up in the upstairs and you said to me one specific play you said before the you know, you saw Keller come in and you said, oh, hit Keller in the seam, hit Keller in the seam. And so I watched Keller on that play. He was open in the seam and far of. threw it away in the flat to Thomas Jones. So maybe there's a chemistry. Keller was open, put it that way, and he didn't look at him. And he was open. I watched, no one was covering him really. It was him in the safety and he was behind him. It could have maybe even been a touchdown. I didn't see the game on TV, but being there live... That was a miss. I can't remember exactly when it was. I think it was in the third quarter at some point. Jake: So let's go. It is time for Knights and Fools. Since we've lost the game, let's go for Fools first. Would you like to go first, sir? Justin: Well, I'll go first. Sure. My last week's Fool is no longer on the team. So I apparently have some sway here with this Last week by Graham. He's gone. So I'm not gonna give it to him again, even though I could he deserves it I'm gonna go ahead and give my fool this week to Lavernius Coles for dropping passes that College receivers could have caught And they're big when you when you're first in you know when you're first in ten And you're throwing an eight yard out to the radius calls, and he's open on the sideline And he just drops it then it's second in ten instead of second in two and Then the playbook gets smaller not bigger so that happened at least three times where he just dropped the ball He made one nice play But he's got to get better, so he's my fool. Jake: He was my first pick of a fool, and I almost named him the fool, but then knowing that you are Mr. Obvious. No, I actually picked two fools, but before I will not name Laverne's called the number
02 Jake: one fool. He was the fool. I really, really, really, really hated the play calling in this. I thought there was just ample opportunity. The times we did throw the ball, it was successful. Then when- And then when the times when I thought, well, just go back to it, go back to it, score points by throwing the ball is as the as Jaws always says, you score touchdowns by throwing the ball. This was a game that was not we were not a blowout. We have Brett Favre there. You throw the ball. You take the Chad, the Chad book. You can send it down to Miami because they'll be needing it for the rest of the year and you throw the ball. And if you throw, you throw a few picks, but there were. There was nobody in the secondary to cover our guys. The fool goes to, I don't know, Brian Schottenheimer or Mangini. I'll give it to Shoddy. Shoddy, you're the fool. And then I'll go right into my night. Justin: Wow. Jake: Yeah, I mean, I'm going to give my night the chance of Stucky. I think this kid... is just electric. Like, I see him. This is the second week in a row he scored a touchdown. Is that a big deal? Yeah, for a guy who basically didn't play all last year. And this time he's making the plays that are needed to be made. Last week he ran for the ball and jumped up and caught it. That was kind of a luck play, but he did it. And this week he runs the out into the end zone. and into the corner of the end zone, catches the sweet pass, and pulls it in. That's a very big timing touch pass. That's not an easy thing to get that ball. It's not like the down the seam or something. You have to have the timing right. You have to make the defender think you're going another way, which basically everybody thinks you're going the way that you are going. I thought it was really well done. one. Chancey Sucky, you're the night of the game. I hope to see you more. I hope to see Laverne's coals less. Coals, if you want to cry about Chad, get a napkin, get on a train, and get down to Miami. That's all I have to say. Wow. Who's your night? That's a lot. Justin: You had a lot to say. I'm going to give it to, let me see, there's a lot of guys I could give it to, even though we lost, but I'm going to go with Darryl Rivas. Dorell Rivas was man to man following Randy Moss around. I think it would have been a lot different had Brady been there because Brady and Moss have a chemistry and relationship and the game plan was not really too... go up top and throw down the field and that's Randy Moss's game but he did nothing he had two catches for 22 yards he did nothing and that's because Reavis was covering him the the entire
05 Justin: game Reavis was just all all over him uh So I'm going to go ahead and give my night to Darryl Rebus, who's turning out to be a nice player. Jake: Yeah, definitely. You alright over there? Yeah, I'm a little, I'm sucking down the sour pill of a loss. So now, let's go on to, I guess, one of the biggest news of the week besides the loss, which is... as you've already alluded to, punter Ben Graham picked up in the Herme era under what looked like this really kind of smart move getting this incredible Australian football player to come and play American football with this incredible ball. It was cool. It was really cool. Yeah, it was cool. It was a cool concept and we loved it. He was an Aussie and he was tough and he get tackled. He was! It was kind of cool. But in the end of the day, he was just inconsistent. Yeah, that's a good word for it. Because he wasn't all bad. No, sometimes he was able to put. I remember the first year, and maybe he lost it after the first year. The first year, this was the whole thing about how of Australian football. So, thank you. a kicker can kick things in three different kinds of kicks. You know, the helicopter kick, the spin kick, and how he was—he could intentionally give the other—the receiver, you know, a really hard time catching it. And there was a lot of times we saw the guys fumbling the ball and we're like, see? He's like drilling them with these things that are just almost uncatchable. I remember that being such a big deal. Justin: I think a lot of guys adopted it though. A lot of, I think a lot of kickers do that now. A lot of the punters kicked the ball kind of weird. Jake: Whatever it was, it doesn't seem to work anymore. And so long, and thanks for the mengeries. And in comes Reggie Hodges. Whoever that is. Justin: You know punters, just punt. Punt good. We don't, you know, there's, they're like, I don't even care that. Ben Graham is gone. I really liked him as a like he was kind of a cool story like he said but I don't care He's a punter. He wasn't putting good. So if this guy punts better but I Jake: Don't know he's awesome. I'm going hunter. I don't think foot zero 226 pounds a big guy for a punter good went to ball state I guess if you're a punter going to Ball State, it's a good idea. Why not? And then he was picked in the 2005 draft. Justin: The fact that he was drafted is a good sign. Jake: By the St. Louis Rams. Well, the fact that he's floating around in the free agency is not a great sign. Justin: Yeah, but you know what? There's only 32 punters. so Graham like you know linebackers there's like Graham see you later Hodges Jake: welcome aboard don't fuck up we will be on your ass already which which brings us to the upcoming games we have some games this
07 Jake: weekend and let's do yes Let's do a little throne picks and you know what we'll talk about our game at the end, but let's first talk about another division rivalry. We got the Miami Dolphins, the 0-2 Miami Dolphins, looking like they could possibly go 0-16. Justin: I don't think they'll do that. Jake: They were going up to play the New England Patriots, the much loved New England Patriots in New England. It's not going to be a cold weather type of deal. Chad has never really had a lot of luck with the Patriots. I don't think he has the... He still doesn't have all the weapons he needs. They're certainly not working together. you know Ted engineers Total farce. Ricky and Ronnie are running not very well. I think they have 100 yards. This is a great stat. They have 100 yards total combined in two games. Justin: That's awful. That's just so bad. You know what that is? That's what was happening to the Jets last year. It's true. 100 yards. No one is respecting the fact that Chad can throw the ball more than 15 yards down the field. So teams will prevent you from running the ball because there'll just be nine guys standing there waiting for you. Jake: So Miami, New England, I don't think this is a high scoring game. I think New England will play it conservative again. I see it. Miami 13, New England 23. Justin: 2313 New England? You know, that's... I would hate... If Miami won this game, I actually want New England to win this game. You understand that? Jake: Yeah, I do. Because if Miami wins this game, that makes us look worse. Yeah. But then again, we beat Miami, and the chances are we'll beat them again. So if you really love the Jets, deep down inside, and you're not just a Patriot fan trying to be a Jets fan, you really do want Miami to win this game. Justin: Well, this isn't about... Heart this is about brain. So I think I think knowing that's gonna be a little too much for Chad as they always are So this game is gonna end really badly for the fins. It's gonna be 31 to 3 Jake: Oof three points. Yeah, I don't think so. Yeah Justin: They got his number We know it and then Oakland going to Buffalo. I hate this game because Buffalo is gonna be three and oh fuck I really don't like this. You know, Buffalo is tough at home early in the season and Oakland. They don't have a quarterback to save their life. They have that kid that can run McFadden, but I don't see them beating the Bills because the Bills will play too good football. I see the Bills being 3-0, which I hate. And the score will be 24-13. Jake: 24th, 13. Right in the start.
00 Jake: Yeah, I am. And I'm giving the, yeah, I think Oakland's going to have a really tough time this year. This is clearly not their year. They're going to be top five picked at the end of the year. Justin: Yeah, what's with this coaching situation? They'll throw a fucking moron. He's an idiot. Jake: Idiot, idiot, idiot. Idiot! Seven points for the Oakland Raiders, 29 points for the Buffalo Bills. Yes, that does include a safety. Justin: I bet you could get to 29 some other way. But you're following safety, alright. Jake: Well, you can do five field goals and whatever touchdowns. Anywho, let's go on to the game du jour, the Monday Night Game, which is no longer the game of the week. Hi-o. You know why I love a Monday Night Game? Because of countdown. Yeah, you can really look forward to it. It's like all about. out. It's like two hours and a half of pure joy. Justin: That's gonna be two hours of the Brett Favre show. ESPN's gonna turn into Brett Favre from 6 until the end of the fucking night. It's gonna be Favre Favre, Favre Favre, Favre. Hey, how about some more Favre? It's just gonna be Favre. Jake: I love the Favre. I think we have a problem though, Houston or Houston we have a problem. Yeah, I think we do. This is not a bad Chargers team. And they're Owen too, which is bad. They are Owen too. This is bad design. So here's the deal. If they go Owen three, they can basically, almost theoretically, but you know, I mean it's not mathematically done, but basically count themselves out of the playoffs. Justin: You know what though? San Diego Chargers? I can't remember the exact year, but they played the 49ers in the Super Bowl and I think that year when they played in the Super Bowl And got killed they were actually only four so that team has Jake: Yeah, it's the one time of the million years that it actually happens But I think if they look at the stats books, so like oh and two making the playoffs Justin: No, they're not the same team though. They don't have Shawn Merriman Jake: They don't have Sean Merriman. Justin: Antonio Gates has been injured. Jake: So I'm not saying they're going to win the game. I'm saying that this is a, this is, there's, you know, all the quotes coming off the teams are they're backed up against the wall, they're backed up. They are, they're backed up. Justin: Like, constipated. Jake: Backed up. They're going to just crap all over themselves. Justin: Yeah, they're going to explode. Good. Jake: But, I say, last week was the lesson learned, play the far of a game. Don't play the Chad game, play the far. Bring the playbook that says, favrah, on the cover. Number four, put it in your suitcase, bring it with you, and when the going gets tough, You say here, here's the ball. There's the wide receivers go have fun, buddy Go on go on your old country hit just throw the ball like you do in the backyard with your parents and your dog
01 Jake: And like in the in the in the husky commercials or whatever he does do that and uh in that way I think on a Monday night in the spotlight. I see the New York Jets putting the beat down on the big clown out in San Diego it's a 3128 Jets win so you're gonna go harder head harder head harder head what are you gonna do they should Justin: be the same this is gonna be a really hard game but These are the kinds of games that Ret 5 teams win in kinda like super cool fashion You know? Like You're on Monday Night Football ESPN's kinda sucking you off Like the whole night It's just It's like one of those things Like I think I think the night is the night his pappy died. I think yeah, well not quite, but I think that he's gonna have a big family member player the game so maybe if the Jets are gonna win the player the games gonna be Chris Jenkins You have to stuff up that middle for for Tomlinson and make rivers beat you Jake: I think it's Harris pace Jenkins. Those are the three players Justin: You gotta make rivers beat you because Rebus can take care of chambers and Gates is not playing as well as he has He's had some leg problems. So actually, I think I like the Jets this week. I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm gonna pick the Jets. I'm talking myself into it. You've convinced yourself. Yeah I just did, I talked myself into it. I'm gonna pick the Jets. I think we're gonna score some points. I think we're gonna actually score 24 of them. And I think that the Chargers are gonna score 19. I don't even know how to get to 19, but they're going to get there. Jake: Well, the Patriots got there last week. It's not that difficult. There you go. Justin: It's not that difficult. Jake: Alrighty. Well, that's the throne picks. We still have to discuss, and off the cuff, we have a bet going. So there's a bet on this year. Oh, really? How did we do last week? Thank you. I don't know. Oh come on you can't do that. That's so stupid. Since you're not writing down and I'm writing it down. Justin: Wait you're writing it down so you're the one who has to keep track of it. That's how it works. Who personally writes it down keeps track. I was three and oh in week one I remember that. Jake: You were three and oh I was three and one. No that can't be. Whatever. I was two and one. I don't have them with me. I have them somewhere, but we have to start thinking about a bet. Remember, there's a bet out there. This is something over our thrown picks for the season. We're going to make it interesting. I say it is you have to sing five bars of Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
04 Jake: wearing a wig. Justin: Wearing a wig. Wear it. So who would see me on the podcast would see me though wearing a wig Jake: I'm pretty sure I could take a picture of you wearing a wig and or Photoshop it on to you. I don't care Justin: I'm just sure I'm gonna wait anyway, so it doesn't really matter. I'm just throwing it out there Jake: Yeah, maybe my my whatever go down as we get worse and worse already Think that's about it. So here you go last moment last thoughts Little tidbit I want you to give to our listen. I got something. I got something everyone's gonna love anyway, what's that? Well in Justin: the preseason the the New Jersey Transit Authority did a really bad job of explaining to the public that they were going to discontinue service the bus 351 service that runs from the Port Authority to the Meadowlands on game days and for events. I've taken the bus many a time, it's very convenient for people that live in the city and want to take mass transit and don't really care about tailgating, especially with the parking situation as it is, most people are now trying to take mass transit. I obviously was lucky enough to drive to the game with you this past week, but I heard that instead of now taking 25-30 minutes from Port Authority on a bus, it now takes about an hour and 15 minutes to take a train from Penn Station to... Bus in New Jersey Which is really awful and they did a really bad job of announcing this to people some people were showing up at the Port Authority not knowing and Especially for the giant game in week one and it happened to some Jeff and especially in week two and Thank you everyone who complained because the New Jersey Transit has decided to restore the service according to Richard Sarrels of New Jersey Transit. He has said that they didn't realize they learned that they definitely needed to... keep the service alive. They didn't realize how how necessary it was and I'm happy to see that they did that both for you know everyone's sanity not having to take forever in two modes of transportation and I think it's a good thing that mass transportation is available for people to get to games. Wow, that's my long thought but it's a good one. Jake: Yeah, I was about to say, when I say a little tidbit, stick to under three minutes there, buddy. Justin: Well, you know, I thought it was kind of an important thing.
00 Jake: Don't make me cut you off. That is it and as always remember go Jets you
