12 Jake: The Jet Kingdom Podcast Episode 8, brought to you in 2007. Tough love. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. I am Jake and across the digital aisle. Hello, I am Justin. Hi Justin, how are you doing? I'm alright. I feel your pain. We almost, this is the latest podcast that we could possibly do since today is Saturday, the 13th of... October and we have a game tomorrow. I don't know if it's just the losing that's keeping us from doing it or a very busy schedule. It's a little bit supposed but if we were winning I think we'd find time. Yeah we're probably doing it right after the game on the way home. So let's get started with what was yet another painful painful game as the Jets played away for bragging rights in New York City against the Giants last weekend where once again, which is becoming a something we're seeing a week in and week out now, once again Chad's kind of not losing the game for us but he ain't winning it. He's throwing picks late in the game that are making the game unwinnable. Well, certainly. totally unwinnable and this game was no different. He did throw three picks, one of them which is run back for touchdown. And you know, it's just two different games. I actually only got to watch half the game because I had a wedding. So as you know, I was trying to watch it on on Slingbox and I was trying to get it on the iPhone and I was trying to get it in 10 different ways. But it was more painful that way than it was actually just to have never watched a piece of it. So I left it half time. We're up, uh, I want- Good for you. Hahaha. Cause you know what? That was the perfect time to leave this game. Yeah, we're up 17-7 in the half. Yep, 17-7 at the half and then we lost the second half 28-7. So you saw the right half. Yeah I saw the right half. So, I guess, I mean, some of the things that just, I'll go over the stuff that I feel like just stick out to me when I'm looking at the uh... Looking at the stats here, you know, besides the Chad Pennington's 21 for 36, 229, okay, that's not very good. Three interceptions, one TD, that's bad stuff. Yeah, I think you have to look a little bit deeper into the stats than just individual players. You have to look at the fact that we lost 35-24 and our offense scored seven points. Yeah, our offense scored 7 points. We scored 24 points, but 7 of them were by Kerry Rhodes
01 Jake: alone by Stripped the guy. That was a great play. Yeah, Kerry Rhodes. Thank you. He's probably our best defense. He finally showed up and stood out. So there's seven points. Leon runs back a kickoff right after they did it. So 98 yards. So there's two touchdowns. That's 14 points. And then the field goal that Nugent made was... just, you know, with no time left because Vilma made an interception off of a really silly play by Eli. Yeah, so so those are 17 points that our defense and special teams scored and our offense only scored seven the defense and special teams should not outscore the offense version Almost you know more than double their production that shouldn't happen true, and I'd love to give the defense credit But for a defense that also gave up 28 points in half a game That's not a defense that gets to get it You know right around in the car with the with the lights going on going we're the best because they're giving up way too much They let they let a brand Jacobs run all over them in the second half. He's a monster. Yeah, but the first, I mean, this is the thing. It's like the first half, when I left, I looked at the stats right before I left, they put it up. Eli Manning's rating was 0-0, his quarterback rating. So for the first half, they just shut everybody down. I was like, that's great. So then I'm looking at the halftime, you know, now looking at it again, it looks like they played an entire game's worth of stats in one half of football. Yeah, but there are always on the field the the offense didn't score in the second half the offense did not score seven points were scored by leon washington on a kickoff not that's it so i mean chad's throwing picks the you know the offense or the defense has to come onto a short field it's not you know i mean there were some some plays that could have been made Kevin Dyson on the sideline. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Laxico Burris catches a short pass and just shoves Dyson out of the way Yeah, that was that was nice painful Yeah, so And we stopped Well, we have a couple more things a couple more things. I look at this game and I'm first of all nuge is still missing Field goals that he shouldn't miss this is his stadium and he's missing them That's one thing article about that this week that he's he's taking it pretty hard on himself and he wants to He wants to make up for it. Oh, he wants to do better He can make up for it by not missing easy field goals. That's what he can do Second thing is for the second week in a row So, we have this weird thing with the offensive line. We want to say the offensive line is horrible, except for they're not letting up the sacks. I think there was one sack last week, and they got up one sack this week against a team
02 Jake: that got 12 the week before. And then Thomas Jones, what's he doing? 13 attempts, 36 yards. Only 13 attempts like I don't I don't quite understand we were winning the game, you know pretty handily we had the game under control and Only you know only 13 attempts because for having nine attempts for Leon I just don't understand and we don't run the right place for them. Well, that's true. The stretch. Oh, I that's that's played Goodbye, throw it out the window. I shot shot throw it out Put it out. It doesn't work. Put a shot in it. They run out wide. It doesn't work. I know. And you just see him keep running. If he had another, you know, if he had another mile, he might actually make the corner. Another field? Yeah, another field. And then why it is the soccer pitch, maybe? Lee and Washington's nine attempts for 13 yards. So they're just neither one of them getting done. I understand. God, it's just painful. So those are the two things I take away. Everybody's not getting it done on both sides of the ball. The offensive line is, you know, they're keeping the sacks good. And how many of that is, you know, Chad getting rid of it quick. They're not getting the running game going. Thomas Jones isn't running. Lee Ann Washington isn't running. Chad's throwing picks. And our defense is just letting everybody just run all over them in the second half. That's the thing, in the second half, the first half they seem to be standing up, which is interesting as a point that I was thinking about the other day. Herman Edwards used to be the opposite. His team used to play horrible in the first half and then he'd go in and do one of his fiery speeches and then they'd come out and they'd dominate in the second half. Now we have kind of like the reverse. Like they come out, they play, they have a good game plan in the beginning and the second half's just crumble. So I think that just leads us down to what is going to be the talk of the week until Well, you know, Chad gets it done, which is... You know, we talked about a little bit last week, you know, is it time to hit the is it time to hit the panic button? And uh, you know, I thought about this way too much this week. Uh, and I i'm ready to hit the panic button Do we mean the panic button like for the whole team or do we mean the panic button for just? time to bring in the backup quarterback or What are we talking about? Well, I think that's my point. I think it's time to sit Chad. And it's not because of Chad's doing a poor job. He is doing a poor job, but there's all sorts of stuff around him that are not getting it done as well. You can only play as well as the whole team is playing. But I think at some point you have to say... You know, this is it. We either start winning eight, one or two games or this season becomes a non-event. It becomes a non-event. So I just think it's a time to shake it up. Now maybe they got other ways to do that. Maybe Man Genie's going to go out and shake them up some other way. to me It would be a huge thing to say the starting the starting quarterback of this team is gonna take a seat and we're gonna put In the backup because that's gonna get everybody on their game and you know, sometimes that actually just gets everybody to play
00 Jake: tougher stronger, you know Rally behind the new quarterback. I do think that it would be a sign of Like giving up or do you think it would be a sign of we think this guy is actually better Well, they drafted him in the second round last year. They picked him up. I mean, this is not a guy they don't think is good. They clearly think he's a good player. And you know, Chad's throwing five picks in two games and losing. Again, Chad used to play these games and maybe throw a couple picks, the short dumps, the whatever. But he'd win. He would win. In the end, he'd drive down and he'd win the game. He's not doing that anymore. So. He's doing the stuff that he used to do, the short drop-offs, the long duck passes, but he's not winning. I tell you, if not for Lavernius Coles, he'd throw a lot more picks. This Coles saves his ass. Oh yeah, and so does Contre. Although Contre was nowhere in this game. This guy's like, save their ass. They just go up and... Alright, that's it. Some of these passes are just befuddling. He's just, that's his only throw. He sometimes, I'm gonna go with it's time to bring in Clemens because I watched the last two games and noticed that sometimes with quarterbacks like Favre who throw a lot of interceptions, they're mistakes. They're just mistakes. You just shouldn't have thrown that pass. Chad's picks are sometimes physical. Like, the past was... They weren't mistakes. He just physically could not make the throw. He can't make it quick enough. He can't make it quick enough or get the ball there fast enough. He has to anticipate. Too much in advance what's going to happen? So you know like he has to anticipate too much because he knows he can't throw the ball You know fast enough to get there so things can go wrong in that time span with the ball up in the air I totally agree and and again I it's not that I don't like Chad and it's not that I don't think he's a great quarterback I think he's a good quarterback. I think he's in a slump So the question is whether you just let him play through his slump and yeah if we were three and two you make it you learn play for the slum. Yeah, our defense was can carry us more like like a Baltimore or Chicago of last year where where the defense can carry you to win a game. Sure, you can live with a veteran quarterback going through a slump but that's not the case here. And it just and it looks like the only way we're gonna be able to win these games is score 31 points and just whip it down the field a lot. and we have don't you don't do that we don't score thirty one point well the reason we don't want we did against uh... my a but the reason we don't do it because we don't have a whipping quarterback he's a ct's it you know it's a pace quarterback he's a time quarterback when you have a running game isn't working and you have a defense that can't get off the field and you have special teams that are letting up you know runbacks for touchdowns yet you gotta have the offense to just be like let's just keep winging it so Again, I think they should do it to shake it up. And they're not going to.
01 Jake: And some of the reasons are legitimate in that the locker room is really around Chad. The locker room believes in Chad. And so they're not going to, if they did that, it really means at the end of the season. But if he throws a couple picks in the first half of this upcoming game, which leads us right into this upcoming game against the Eagles. I expect him to sit him. I expect him to be sat down if in the first half he throws a couple picks and we're down by a touchdown or 10 points or so. So we have the Eagles, which, you know... It's tough. Eagles are tough. I think Westbrook's supposed to play. He's listed as probable right now. And this is not... As of Saturday, so this is actually some good information as opposed to the information we usually have. We can actually give you stuff. Westbrook is supposed to play this week and the Eagles are a completely different team when he plays and there are 100% different team when he plays they can put up 50 points Yeah, and the good news is that this is not the Eagles from last year with the year before the year before that This is not the perennial very very good Eagles this is a one in three Eagles. Yeah, but it's different when Westbrook plays. When he plays, they're a very good team. Well, he plays the first two games, and they lost those games too. They've only won one game, and it's against Detroit, and they just played out of their mind. So, again, I don't think this is an unwinnable game, but I don't have good feelings about it. I can tell you that right now. I do not have good feelings about this game. I feel like they're just their defense is just gonna pressure Chad all day They're gonna sit on his routes and they're gonna do exactly what the last two teams did to him Which is just pick him pick him You know what happens when you can't throw the ball for more than 20 yards. No one goes deeper than 20 yards Yep, everyone just stands there I mean it's it is kind of easy to see why Thomas Jones can't get get get going because You know, we can't throw the ball from more than 20 yards. It was a sad, sad stat when I saw that on the giant game. I think they said Chad has like three completions this year of over 20 yards. That's like, you know, throwing the ball over 20 yards. He has some yard completions. But I mean, that's nothing. That's nothing. The other thing that I do that in a game. Yeah, no, I know. Both will die in a half and a quarter. Yeah. I'll say the other thing that the other stat that came out of that game that just so frustrating, it's been brought up a couple of times on the boards. They put up a stat. They said when the when the Jets line up in a in a run in a run pattern with one back in the backfield, you know, whatever five, six yards behind the quarterback, they run the ball and 97% of the time. So that basically means every freaking time they line up in that, they run the ball. Well, if the damn announcers know that, then you've got to know the defense knows that. Even the dumbest doofus on the defense knows that. That's the stat that they know. When they line up to run, they run. So if you know they're going to run... You stop them from running. If you know when a team is going to run every time, no one can get through that because they can just crowd the guy.
01 Jake: Even with Danny Thomas, he can't run if they think he's going to run every time. They have to think that they're going to pass and that's what gives him room to run. That was so frustrating. So, okay, let's talk about the Eagles. We'll bring it back to the Eagles. So there's a couple of … we'll stay in stats. There's a couple of really nasty stats floating around. Oh, yeah. and we'll see you next time. You know, Andy Reid in the regular season 8-0, coaching the Eagles the week after a bye, that's not a good thing to hear. The Eagles are 7-0 all time against the Jets in the regular season, that's not good to hear. So, I mean, maybe you're one of those people that says, well it's bound to happen sometime, it's gotta happen. So maybe that's a good thing. I look at it like... you know history repeats itself. Oh I'm so pathetic a jet fan right now. Oh man. I feel your pain. I feel like a rich kotai jet fan. And this guy is not rich kotai. I don't know why I feel that way. Well that's, I think, I think we gave him too much credit last year and we're probably not giving him enough credit this year so. Everybody likes the winning and getting the 10 and 6 when everybody thought we're gonna do you know zero Is one thing of the schedule now aren't a much much tougher schedule and Sure, and we have issues and you know some of the issues seem that they could have been avoided like the offensive line And some of the issues are just playing the Jets and they look like execution issues but they all have to go back to him so for the second year coach, eh, second year coach's first year got you the play so you don't you don't get too on him too quickly so I think this is a tenure yeah this is still you know you still get this kind of coach a while to get going so we both hate this game for the longest time this is the first game in the longest time that I'm, uh... I'm a little sick to my stomach about going to it because I'm so... most games, even the Patriots, even no matter who we play, I always think we can win like two years ago or three years ago when it was the 5-0, um, 10-1-0 bucks and we had Vinny coming back for his first start in a year. I thought... By the way, Vinny might start this week for Carolina. I wish I was playing Carolina this week. You say that. it, the, um, you say that, like, you, uh... well, never mind, sorry, I don't know, so, I'm literally, I'm sick to my stomach about this game, I mean, obviously I'm going, obviously you're going, and I'm actually bringing an eagles fan... What are we gonna do? What are we gonna do? Dude, what are we gonna tailgate? What are we, what are we gonna... Of course, of course we're gonna tailgate. What kind of food should we bring? We're not discussing that on the podcast. I mean, when should we discuss it? It's Saturday already. We'll discuss it after the podcast. Alrighty then, so let's go for our thronepicks. So I'm picking, let's pick this game first.
02 Jake: The 1 and 3 Eagles against the New York Jets. I'm going... because I'm a Homer. There's some miracle of the metaland, the land of the seven, and the Jets win 25-21. 25-21, huh? That's correct. Since I said I'm never going to pick against the Jets on this podcast... You should do it, just so you said you didn't. Yeah. I'm going to pick against them. Okay I'm sorry. 38... Oh fuck. Oh Jesus. 38.13. 38.13. That's nice. I'm not gonna get the fuck. I know and somewhere in the back of your mind you're thinking that's just a voodoo double twist. Yeah, you're right. Somewhere in my mind. It's like, I'm gonna go to the game and cheer for the Eagles for my throne picks, right? And then I'll be all pissed off when the Jets win. So it's working already. So the Bills have off, but the Miami Dolphins do not after that big almost win against Dallas. But anyway, so the Dolphins, the 0-5 Dolphins are taking on the 2-3 Cleveland Browns. What do you think? I like Cleveland at home in this game. I think Cleveland is better than people think. They play, they gave New England a decent run for their money in a half. It's kind of the way the jets did actually. uh... i like we went in this game likely went score least twenty four points and see miami doing anything cleo lemon probably gonna start out given them six wow so is that twenty four six yeah i i picked miami dolphins win last week they should've won last week they got jerked out of you know fifty four yard field goal to win though to let about the Houston Texans win. I think this is one of those, I think this is the new guy. You get Quill Lemon in there, I think he's just, he's a different kind of quarterback. He's going to scramble, he's going to just gun it and I think the Dolphins win. I think because of that, the defense will stand up and this will be the Dolphins first win. They'll join us at one and five. Dolphins win 2013. Wow. Yeah. And then the last game, the preview to the Super Bowl, the biggest game in the market, the big big game, the New England Patriots versus the Dallas Cowboys. It's going to be one. The two undefeated teams, 5-0 against 5-0, Romo against Brady, Old versus New. What do you think? Give me a pick. I like the... I like the Pats. Winning late, 38-31. Wow, 38-31. So they're going to score more than they've ever scored? 38-31. Yeah, I think this is going to be the big letdown of the week. Everybody's going to look back at this game and go, What were we thinking? Because the Dallas Cowboys didn't look so good last week.
04 Jake: But they still... Yeah, but they weren't playing against the Bills. I mean, they weren't playing against the Pats. They were playing the Bills. All right. This is not going to happen. Patriots 33-21. Patriots 33-21. That's what I'm saying. I think they'll, you know, Cowboys will try to rally in the end, but I just don't see them away to keep going with the Patriots. and uh... their defense is just too good to smart and really romeau's really a rookie still if any because the team you don't want to work it against it's the pads because they will confuse the heck out of him so i i i just don't think they get going they'll shut down the running game and then it'll start on the ball and it'll be all over before it before before the half so that's it that's our picks for the week as the throne picks and uh... I think that about wraps it up with a quick a quick one. We could talk a little bit What's going on jet Kingdom of course? There's the jacuzzi and thrown packs picks which are already up because it's so late and and there's I haven't seen a jester's keep And a little there mister. Oh god. I have one that's today in like draft status. Yeah Again, it's been really busy. Yes this past week or so Um, you know, got a kitten. Keeps you busy. That does, that does keep you busy. I'll try not to comment on that. Um, that's okay. You know, well, I know it's a rankings article, but you might want to like, I'll have to go back and re re rank some of those teams. because I think I had Denver somewhere in the top ten and they got spanked by San Diego. Yeah, I don't think that's gonna do too well. What's San Diego stepping up and actually scoring some points? I think that's good. I picked them to win this week. I think they'll destroy Oakland. You think so? Definitely. I'll step it out. Yeah, well, I'm saying that no matter what we do, it's going to be a jet game. It's going to be a home game. We can go. We can get loud and crazy. And hopefully, we can just turn the season around, get a big win, and kick it off because the rest of the season looks tough. And if we don't get a couple of wins in here before the bye, we got Pittsburgh, New England, Cowboys. and Tennessee after the bye, that's not good. That's not good at all. So we need to, we need to. Which way are you playing Carolina? Play Vinny? I wish. You just wanna be playing Vinny. Yeah. No, we're not playing Carolina. We gotta play the. We gotta play Donovan. I don't think Donovan's gonna be able to do as much as everybody thinks. He's getting slower and. Westbrook helps him. It's that screenplay. I mean a lot they get a lot of yards. I mean Ronnie Brown was tough to stop this guy is
00 Justin: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not gonna be Jake: A lot of balls there are outfits is really designed around him and the defense is pretty good Although again, I say we win we're gonna win. Let's go jets. We'll see you next week We'll have our podcast out sometime before Saturday next week This is a makeup podcast and do you have any final words for the people out there? Just know that I picked against the Jets this week because I really do want them to win. Okay, so it's tough love. Alright, well having said that, this is the Jet Kingdom podcast. I'm Jake, he's Justin and we're saying as always... Go Jets!
