16 Jake: This is the Jet Kingdom Podcast, episode number 9. or Thursday, October 18th? Hic me. Well, welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. I am, as always, Jake, and on the other side of the digital aisle I have... As always, Justin. As always. I've seen a little earlier in the podcast this week. We're not going to wait until Saturday. We'll do it on Thursday so we can get some of the... news in there and maybe make some picks and not sound like we're putting in a last minute show. Justin: Well at least we had more information last time. Jake: That's true. If you do it right before the the game itself. But I have injury reports and all sorts of stuff to report. It does make me forget what happened in the last game though. Although yeah. But that was a good thing. In this case, and in the last case, and the case before that, and the case before that, that would have been a really good thing. So let's kick it off. Pretty much every case. Let's get right into the podcast this week. And let's talk about, although we have to, the Philadelphia Eagles game this last Sunday, where basically the Jets, as I would say, lost on two plays. There were two plays where there was just a. Justin: breakdown I guess. Can I guess? I don't know these two plays you speak of but can I guess them? Go ahead guess them. I imagine the first one would be Kevin Curtis's 75 yard touchdown. That would be a good guess. So that's a pretty obvious one. And I would assume the second one is the fourth down play. Or somewhere in that series of plays where they didn't get it down in the fourth quarter, down by the goal line? Jake: Yeah, I'm going to say it's that when they're on the 14th yard line and Chad throws to Vernice Coles on a fourth and one where we had just run, I don't know, 100 and something yards or 120 yards for the day. 130, sorry, for the day. Why we couldn't go fourth and one and run the ball for one yard. I know that's what they expect, but they weren't able to stop Thomas Jones all day. So why we're ending up trying to go for the touchdown when all we needed was the first down and we had plenty of time left. It made no sense. Play calling, play calling, play calling. Justin: A lot of people are calling for man genie on that one. To come in and run the ball? No, no, no. Just, you know, calling them out saying, you know, that was, you know, first time that. people are really a little bit of a turn on man genie yeah saying hey man man genius here that was not a good play call that was not the right thing to do Jake: I hate to tell you this but that wasn't his that shouldn't have been his play call anyway that should have been shot in himer's play call because he's offensive coordinator and so I blame ultimately though people blame the head coach
01 Jake: I blame, I blame head coach. Oh, there's enough blame. If you wanna pick up the big bucket of blame and scoop it out and give a little to everybody on their plate, I have enough to go around on everybody. I'll put blame on Chad Pennington for having 11, 21, 128 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception for the day. horrible horrible game for him. I'll put blame on Mike Nugent for this missing yet another third game in a row he's missing field goal. I know you're gonna say oh but Acre is a really good kicker, missed two down the same area, same side of the field. Justin: Must have been something with the wind down there because nobody was making a field goal from there. I have a question for you Justin. Go on. Who was the home team? Jake: the JGS the jets for the home team so who should if anything goes on that stadium who should be the better kicker on any given day in your own home stadium on their gym but he only missed one acres miss two okay but now new June has missed I think nine points in the last three games And you're willing to excuse that? Justin: No, I'm just saying that kick was not easy. I mean Acres missed the same exact kick that Nugent missed. Jake: I expect him to make every kick inside a 50 yard kick in our own house. Justin: In fact, when you get that kick, that particular kick was like a 50 yard kick. because of the wind and the way that it was working. I mean, I didn't see it on TV, so I don't know what it looked like if it ever even had a chance, but from where we were sitting, it looked like every time somebody kicked the ball down that way, the ball just went to the right. Jake: Yeah. Sorry, the nuge gets a big scoop of my up-blame machine. You know, the person or the team that I don't think gets a big blame, other than the big the missing of the 75 yard is by the way his uh his one his one big play of the game um the defense i don't think did badly i mean they held this team to 16 points you know what more can you ask really if you're 13 to 16 10 16 that's where you want to hold teams like you don't you know they didn't do multiple touchdown they had one touchdown play and it was a it was a you know a good play on their part and a bad play on our part and a missed tackle which we seem to have too many of but other than that, I mean the defense, the defense did well I would say they couldn't contain Brian Westbrook but very few teams can Yeah it's very hard to contain him, he plays so Justin: to hold him to what we did is exceptional, I mean he didn't score Yeah that's pretty good that's right he did run for a hundred yards but i don't think he he did too much through the air i mean there were some plays that that they made with him that do you say damn like that you know it's like damn they threw it for a yard and then he gained twelve like that is that happened it's kinda like what the jets do with leon washington sometimes when they decide to get involved Jake: that's true and leon had a good that a kickoff return if he just beat that one guy this game would have been a
01 Jake: uh you know at least winnable I I can't really again I think for whatever reason Chad didn't have the ability to get it done and I'm still on the Chad's gotta I just sit him it's not about sitting in forever it's not about saying the season's over it's just about shaking things up giving him some time to kind of think it over put in a new guy get a little breath of fresh air in here I just I know they're not gonna do it. I know man genie is still stuck on it I I guess this is the game though if Cincinnati goes badly my guess is he gets sad well Justin: considering the fact that Cincinnati is Pretty horrific on defense right? Yeah, they are like very much last or within the last three categories of passing yards allowed their 28th rushing yards their 29th last in points allowed 30th total yards they're so bad hold on hold on let's not go into that Jake: game just yet because we have a new i know you just want to kick off into all your you know Justin: you're you're reading we're talking about how pennington needs to needs to play better and if he can't play better against... the upcoming opponent then he's never going to play good Jake: that that is true but we have we have a new segment on the Jet Kingdom podcast segments we have a new segment yeah and segment is real show now it's been a real show come on now don't downplay us all our people love us so the new segment is Knights and Fools so out of every game of the past game, you're gonna pick a knight and a fool. So from the previous game? From the previous game, you're gonna pick a knight and a fool. A knight would be someone who did, well, a great job, and you think, you know, you're gonna highlight why, and a fool would be someone who did a poor job, and you're gonna highlight why. We can't pick the player, and it can be people... players, people, coaches from either team, either side, anybody involved, it could even be me. So go ahead, actually I'll start because I kind of sprung this on you, I'll start and I will say... Justin: Yeah, you know, let me tell the folks out there how much we prepare. I just learned the rules of the game. Let's play! Let's play. Don't be difficult by script. This is all off the cuff. Go on! Wait, are we alternate? Are you going to pick a night and then I'll pick a night? Jake: Yes. Oh, that's how we're going to do it. I'm going to pick a night and then you're going to pick a night. My night this week or... OK, are we picking? Justin: I'm sorry to ask so many questions. Can I pick an eagle? Jake: You can, although I think that would be like picking the jets to lose like you did last week. Other words, a bad thing to do. Justin: I was right. Jake: Yeah, that's not part of the rules. I would say pick someone within the jets organization. So for this week, I'm going to make it pretty obvious. I'm going to give my night.
00 Jake: to my knighthood to Thomas Jones, who I think actually had some really good breakout plays. He ran 130 yards on 24 carries. He had that huge 36-yard long one. Again, it didn't seem like he was productive the whole game. He kind of had spurts, but at least he looked like the guy who I thought would be playing week one. not person who's been playing for the last six weeks uh... last five weeks before this so my knighthood goes to thomas jones congratulations and yours Justin: yeah thanks captain obvious Jake: uh... you can go work you can go you can go first next week and you can go first in full cells that while thank you Justin: well i'm gonna go with the side of the ball that actually played well yeah uh... I'm gonna go with Jonathan Vilma. I'm gonna go with Vilma. I think he's starting to get it. I think he played behind the line of scrimmage in this game. He got to the quarterback. He didn't have any sacks. But he had plays in the backfield that he was making things happen. He had two pass defense. That's pretty good for a linebacker. That means he... He was playing the past as well as the run. We did a decent enough job on Westbrook. We did hold him to something like 150, 160 total yards, which is pretty decent. Average. Holding him to an average game is good. Jake: Yeah. Well, that's a good one. Alright, do you want to go for your fool or do you want me to go for a fool? Justin: Can I get my I don't think you're gonna pick my guy so go on no no do you go first go first I get to go first yeah I'm picking Chad Pennington you're gonna pick Chad Pennington the Fool of the Week yeah Jake: Yeah, and you call me captain obvious listen. I mean the guy didn't do anything Justin: Doing thing he needs to stretch the field yeah, he's not stretching the field is not that throw that he threw for the interception just lobbing it down the field to somebody running straight that means throwing passes for 25 yards like that he had a one nice one to cotry over the middle for like 20 something yards 27 28 yards that was a really nice play i would like to see you know i'd like to see kell and clemens come in chad's my fool Jake: All right, my fool of the week, and only because we started this week, but he's going to get three fools stacked up against him. It is Mr. Mike Nugent, number one, because for not hitting the number one field goal, and for missing the field goal last week, and missing the field goal the week before that. So you're three times the fool in my book, Mike Nugent. I hope you do much, much better in Cincinnati. Which brings us right to the next game, which is the Cincinnati Bengals Not an unwinnable game. I mean, this is we seem to be locking and they're one in four
11 Jake: Yeah, we should be looking up against, I and I, Bad team and we beat them Maybe we could have caught the Patriots by surprise although maybe no one's gonna keep them get them by surprise But uh, yeah, certainly the one in five jets at the one in four Bengals I'm sure the number one announcers will be on that this This reminds me of a game that took place in say 1999 Justin: One of those years, you know, the one in five jets met the one in four Bengals before yeah Jake: This is not great pretty. I think actually I got a call today. I got to check my voicemail because I think maybe CBS called me up and said if I wanted to do the game I could come and sit in there. Justin: Really? Can I come? Did they mention your partner? Jake: No, no. They didn't talk anything about you. So what do you think? I mean, yeah, you were saying before I know you're rattling off your stats. 20s to 20s in your arse. Stats, I love it. Justin: Yeah, their defense. I mean, this is the tale of two teams here with Bengals because... They're awful, awful, awful on defense. They're 30th in defense. They give up almost 400 yards a game, 393 yards. They are dead last in points allowed. So this team gives up yards. This team gives up points. But on the flip side, they score. They throw for about almost 300 yards, 285 yards. And they. they can really, really get down the field. So, they can score. Yeah, they're gonna, I mean, Hushmanzada, Chad Johnson, these guys are very good receivers. I don't know who, whoever lines up across the field from number 36 is gonna have a field day. Jake: Yeah, I totally. The only thing I can hope is that our secondary just gets crazy and starts playing the game that we thought they'd play. Maybe Dyson can hang in there for the game and him and Barret can become one player. Justin: Reavis should become one player because Barric can clearly tackle. uh... and i think and dyson not a terrible cover guy certainly can't cover anybody but if they were one player maybe that would be good yeah we do that we merge players i don't know can we i don't know Jake: i'm surprised where the jets money We can actually just make one player out of two. I don't think so. We can figure it out. It's called science, Jason. Oh, God, science. It's a horrible thing. Um, alright, so it's, it could be a game. We could win this game. We could win it on the ground. We could win it on our offense. If we can just keep our defenses, stick in there and just, you know, keep them like under 30.
00 Jake: Then we can maybe. Under 30? Yeah, under 30. Justin: See you next week. See, you're right. Under 30 is a challenge, but I think that's probably right about right. Are we going to be able to score 30? Yes! I think we'll be able to score 30. With the Fool leading the pack? Jake: The Fool of last week will be the night of Chad Pitt comes back and plays really, really well. It's I'm going right for my throne pick right now. Jets 33, Bengals 28. There it is. You're going to have them score 33. 33 points? We scored 31 against Dolphins. We can score 33 against Bengals. That's what I'm saying. Would you like to lay a little pick on the line there, buddy? Justin: Yeah, I would. I may as well keep going with this. Thanks. Street of me picking you but you realize it didn't work last week Jake: So your your reverse psychology didn't you understand that I was right? But it didn't work. So if you didn't don't do it again if we won last week, it would be great But my pic was correct. That's true. But no one's keeping track of your pics. We're keeping tracks for the wins and losses Go ahead, pick whatever. Whatever, dude. Justin: 38. I'm going to give them 38 again. I picked 38 for the Eagles. They didn't quite do that. But 38, 24. Jets lose. Jake: Very nice. Well, OK, that'll lead us into our next segment, which we call In Other Kingdoms, and talk about what's going on in the other. other places and other teams around the AFCs. I mean, the thing that's coming up, and we can just talk about both teams because they're playing each other, and we can make our pick as we talk about them, but the New England Patriots, the 6-0, going after destroying Dallas. I'm sorry, with that final score, it was not that team destroyed them. Justin: Yeah, it's great. They do the FU touchdown all the time, too. They do. They just score at the end of the game to just be like, you know what? We beat you, and now we're going to run up the score against you. And here we go. Jake: Yeah, no, it's true. And it's crazy. They're going up against the Miami Dolphins, who are actually in their longest losing streak in the history of the franchise. They lost 3-0 at the end of last year, and a 6 this year. That's 9. Yeah. Clearly they also traded away Chris Chambers Justin: It's a big story of the week in other kingdoms. Yeah, I I Don't even know what to say other than trading for the future. Yeah, train truly You know, I you know it from from the Dolphins perspective and from my perspective I'm glad they did it because the short term like you know just makes them worse uh... but in the long term i make them better they got a second round pick so yeah i mean it does it eat at they're there a team that just
01 Justin: that has been run so poorly there they haven't had i think in the last bunch years like none of their first round picks are even on the team Jake: well ronnie browns on the team and jason alan's on the team and and uh... and uh... uh... What's his face this year? He's on the team. Ted Ginn Jr. Ted Ginn Jr. He's actually a starting wideout now because I got rid of Chambers. Justin: That's great. Jake: Good. Well it depends if you're a Dolphin fan or if you're an anti-Dolphin fan. Justin: Well I'm not a Jet fan so I hate the Dolphins so good. Ted Ginn Jr. Start brother. Jake: Go on. I think it's a good move but it just screams of desperation. It just screams of desperation. You're 0-6 and you're trading away. You're number one wideout. ... Justin: for it doesn't really scream with desperation it screams of white flag we suck we're giving up we're gonna play for the future at this point we're gonna give our young guys some playing time and we're gonna get another draft pick out of this and maybe chambers just wasn't a good leader as a five-year veteran maybe just wasn't ready to step up and be the guy that can lead these young players so they said goodbye we'll take a draft pick We're giving up on this season. We got Cleo Leavitt, so we're giving up. Jake: I, uh, yeah. Again, as a Jett fan, that's great. There'll be a worse team this year. There'll probably be a better team in the years to come. But a second round draft pick is not a lot for your starting wideout. And I think it's all right. Justin: Eh, what did the Pats get for Gian Branch? Jake: The first round? Two first rounds. No, not two. I think they got a first and a second. Justin: What are we gonna first? Jake: I think they got a first and a second. Justin: Uh, I doubt that. Or a first and a third. Jake: Doesn't matter. The point is, the Dolphins are getting worse this year. That's fine. They should put in Josh Beck. If they want to see what they're gonna see for what kind of players, why are you playing around Lemmon, Cleo Lemon, you know, Cleo the... He's awesome. What are you talking about? No, just get rid of him, put in Josh Beck, and see if you have a quarterback for the next year. here. And you got to start on defense next year. They made horrible moves in the offseason. They did a horrible draft. This team is just is bad. And when my wife listens to this podcast, she's not gonna be happy. But what do you think the score is gonna be? So let's go on to the pick. I say the Patriots don't stop on their FU touchdown. They keep going until they hit 50. It's 50 to 13. Patriots Justin: So am I assuming that you're picking New England this week with the spread of 16 and a half Because I am I've got a record pick New England I am betting on New England with the spread of 16 and a half I don't have them quick getting to 50, but I am gonna have them at 45 Jake: To 20. All right, so then the Ravens take on the go up to Buffalo and take on the Bills It's the return of Will Smith ghee to Buffalo and I see this as a I see this as not a high-scoring game But this is the game when Trent Edwards has a come up and says a starter
02 Jake: As a rookie quarterback and I think the Ravens I think the Ravens beat them I think was me gay he just starts to run like like he's on his old stomping grounds and it's Raven 17 Bills 10 Justin: I disagree with you here. I think Willis McGahy is gonna be shut down. I think the bills are better than people think at home. They're very formidable at home. It's very hard to beat them up there. And I think the crowd's gonna get to McGahy because they frickin' hate him. They hate him up there. So I think Buffalo's gonna get to him not score a lot of points Like you said, I'll just flip it around 17 10 Jake: Buffalo already and then and then I think that's it for the AFC East. Let's see what else we got to talk about Well, we have our normal jet Kingdom. I actually we missed an injury Justin: Somewhat significant injury for New England for Sammy Morris. Oh, yeah, they have no running backs anymore Yeah, it's gonna be yeah, I don't think it'll really matter I Think Kevin Falcon but they got Chad Johnson have and and Maroney is it might come back and play this week Maybe next week. So we'll see about that But they did lose their starting running back Sammy Morris as if it matters. I mean, it's sary Jake: It's Sammy Morris. He's not really anything special as if there's ever a team that could have a game with no running back and still win by Justin: 20 points. Yeah, they could they just line up like five wide the whole game With like two tight ends or something or maybe like some weird stupid shit. They would figure something out It's unbelievable Jake: So so other thing I will say that the kingdom of jet Kingdom is still waiting for the much heralded much waited for much delayed latest gestures keep Oh shit We'll see if that actually comes to be. I'm sure it's only four weeks too late now. But there is the Jet Kingdom. Justin: Can I just backdate it? Jake: No. The Jet Kingdom throne picks are up on the site as well as the podcast and other information. So always head over there and check out what's going on. and i think that's about it for our podcast i'll get this one up and out before before the sunday games that's all good stuff having last moments thoughts podcast Justin: at checking dot com Jake: and very good and as i was saying always gojets Thanks for watching!
