15 Jake: This is episode 39 of the Jet Kingdom podcast for Tuesday January 6th 2009. Bummer. Hey Justin, I would ask how you are, but of course I understand your pain because while I do make fun of you being a Patriots fan, I do understand that you sometimes root for the Jets. Either way, I miss the playoffs. True enough. So why don't we get right into it and talk about... a couple things that happened with not too much in depth first of all it's apologize to the the fan base that we did get a couple emails on saying where you guys going what's going on why you guys not doing anymore again you know just a life liberty liberty they're not gonna believe that it's because Justin: we sucked and we didn't want to do the podcast because the Jets suck and they're too depressing Um... No, it's a mixture of both, right? Jake: So, well, no, because last year I think we were worse and we had more podcasts. So we will definitely try to make up for it in next year's Super Bowl run. But for this year, we'll try to make out for the playoffs and tell you what's going to be what's up with a couple more and maybe a post Super Bowl and then probably want to round the draft. But let's get into it. So let's talk about the painful game that was They had Miami Dolphins coming to the Jets and the playoff scenario. So here's what had to happen. Bills had to beat Patriots at one o'clock. If they didn't beat Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens had to lose to Jackson Jaguars. So you and I and my dolphin wife sat in the parking actually with a bunch of people, there's a whole huge tailgate we're going to. Um, what kind of fun it was kind of fun. I mean we were listening to the Bill's game Justin: Cooley that was not going to go right. So some people had TVs. I was uh, I was walking around Quite often just watching people's televisions. They brought satellite dishes. It was pretty cool. Um And I honestly thought the Bills had shot because of the weather They were saying you know a lot of wind a lot of weather very cold Knocked me able to throw the ball and of course, you know, the Bills couldn't throw the ball
00 Justin: They couldn't score as a matter of fact. I saw one there one field goal attempt that went literally I think Lindell, their kicker, started the ball out like 10 yards to the left outside the field goal post and he missed right by like 40 feet or 40 yards. Like it was amazing how the ball just swooped that way. It was impossible conditions. You knew the Pats weren't going to lose that game. Yeah. Jake: So the Pats win, and we knew that going to the game, we sat there. And then we were hoping maybe for the Baltimore Ravens to make it happen. And of course, they didn't show the score in the stadium. It's so weird. It was weird. They didn't show both the Pats score, which was over at that point. Everyone in the stadium knew the score of that game. Right and yet they didn't show it the only time they did show it the one time that the jacks are the Jaguars had a Thanks, seven three lead over yeah more. They showed it in a crowd the crowd erupted and yes Justin: That was you know our one that was probably the biggest cheer of the entire game Jake: I think yeah, and then and then we had a game so we had the I mean this this game was so full of stuff It's it's the Miami Dolphins coming off a horrible season of 1 and 15 going to you know What was 10 and 10 and 5 or 10 and 6? No, 10 and 5 at the time and the Jets, you know working to try to make it in the playoffs Maybe but basically I would say about halfway through the game We knew we weren't going to playoffs that this was a team. This is just a game to see if we could win at the end against an old rival. And Chad Pennington came back. And Chad Pennington, he did what he does. He had a Chad game. He had the Chad game. We'll talk about it a little bit later. A couple of nice throws. We'll talk a little bit later what happened in the game after that. We had another Chad game. Yeah, another Chad game. But basically, our team collapsed. Here's the thing that struck me is they came out of the tunnel. . they walked out. Remember they walked out? Yeah, that was bullshit. What was that? It was as if Justin: it was as if they had they were all watching the pats win and then like they were like, ah, like I would I don't understand like the dolphins come out and they're jumping around and they're you know they're playing for their season and they're jumping around and they're you know hooting and hollering and this is our house and meanwhile it's not it's it's our house and And the Jets come walking out with their heads down and their helmets on. Um, you know, just walking out, walking out, eh, another day. Eh, last day of the season, pick up a paycheck, go home for the rest of the year. I mean, it was pathetic. It really was. It was, it was, I was offended. Jake: It was clear that that team had given up. And they had given up maybe three or four games before that. They gave up against the Seahawks. They gave up. This is a team that barely scored touchdowns towards the end of the season. It just was pathetic showing. There were a few moments of brightness.
00 Jake: But basically, Farriv does what Farriv does worse, which he comes out, goes 20 for 40, one TD, and three interceptions. Justin: Oh, I got to say. the one interception that was really awful was at the end of the first half the the interception on the screen pass that that went for a touchdown the play like right after Miami had just scored a touchdown like the next play here comes the offense maybe they're gonna drive down the field with two minutes left and then on a screen pass he just throws it right to the defensive lineman touchdown. That was a backbreaker. That was tough. I mean, because at that point, you know, Jake: you're down by a little bit, you could have come back. But at that point, it just it just it took all the steam out. It was it was really bad. Again, the game was horrible. It wasn't even a team that looked like they want to play. And to be perfectly honest. You know, four turnovers in a game, you're not winning the game. Like you're just you're not going to win. And and no one could get anything, you know, a running game. Thomas Jones, 10 10 attempts for 23 yards. I mean, averaging three years like they stopped trying to run. Justin: They gave Leon Leon a bunch of touches, but still, it was almost as if, you know, they abandoned the run because they thought they had to score and they really. They did. The game was close the whole way through. I don't know. I don't know. And to me, I mean, you and I were sitting in in in the stands actually arguing over whether or not they should fire Eric Mangini. And at the I think it was the end of the first half again after that touchdown where Miami had picked off Brett. We went back down the field and. and they maybe they ran the ball or something and and and the clock was running and they had a timeout and instead of calling that timeout they spiked the ball on maybe the second down or third down. Yeah, I remember that. And they go into timeout to stop the clock, and they have to kick a field goal because they burned like eight seconds trying to spike the ball. And instead of calling a timeout, having 3rd down to throw the ball into the end zone, if not 4th down you can feel it. You spike the ball and you go into halftime with a feel goal, not a chance at a touchdown, and a timeout in your pocket. Why would you go into halftime with a timeout in your pocket when you can run a play on the goal line? Instead you spike the ball on the 5. You spike the ball on the 5 on 2nd down instead of calling timeouts that you can go into half time with a timeout in your pocket.
00 Justin: You don't get those in the second half and that annoyed the shit out of me. Because you're taking 3 points when you could have had another shot at 7 and you're just taking it. And going into half time with a timeout in your pocket which is lame. that you deserve to get fired for that sorry i'm jumping ahead but it's you know it happened right after i mean they waited literally no time to say goodbye Jake: well let's let's let's let's just finish up the game a little so we have james don't we lost we did two things with every game we give a play of the game that jake and justin play the game so give me a play I want to hear actually give me two things give me a play Play and you can pick an offense or defense play that you want to highlight and then pick a player To be your full of the week offense or defensive player. Oh, that's pretty cool Justin: One or the other I think I will pick I wasn't even prepared for this, I probably shouldn't mind now. Yeah, that's why you made me go first, isn't it? Alright, I will pick. I'm just gonna go ahead and choose, there's hard to choose a defensive player in this game, the defense was so bad. Like Chad threw on them. No picks. Fumbled once there was a fumble for fumble. I'm gonna. I'm just gonna They all sucked. Sorry Alright, there's no defense. I can't give me a fool. Oh I'm gonna pick Dwight Lowry just for the fuck of it. See how that touchdown caught over him. And why not? A defensive fool. Jake: Yeah, I'll give you an offensive play of the game. Really, it was making the two-point conversion. Oh, yeah. You know, I or two points cuz cuz we never do that Why is it that on third and two we throw the ball? uh... because we don't think we can run the ball uh... and for my fool of the game gotta give stuff i mean i guess you just have to give it to the man the myth the legend you gotta give it to man genie since I get fired for it so let's go away and- Farf could have very easily gotten the fool of this game Justin: he could have played- he played bad! Jake: he's been crappy all he's been he could have gotten the fool of the game for it Ton of the losses and maybe even one or two of the wins like the bill was really bad though He he would he was bad and he but he was what we get You know you get what you get and that's and that's what it is Justin: I'll say receivers are pretty bad too. They don't help them You know I was watching the the drops the well forget the drops I was watching the Arizona game this wild card weekend that has just passed and you're jumping ahead I know I'm jumping ahead, but I'm just saying You know Larry Fitzgerald that first touchdown of the game where he was covered by two guys and yeah Warner just threw it up in the end zone Yeah, if that's far throwing it up in the end zone to Lavergne's Colts with two guys covering him. That's an interception
04 Justin: It's it Goes both ways. I was watching Fitzgerald just jump up and just snatch the ball with big strong hands. I'm like wow Jake: and I don't want to come down on one way or the other and say, oh, this is the most horrendous thing in the world or the best thing in the world because realistically, even though I'm a Jets fan, it's neither the most horrendous thing in the world nor the best thing in the world. You know, what I'm intrigued about Jet fans, and I consider myself a Jet fan, but sometimes Sometimes I look on from my position and look out at the others and I say, you know, it's The Jets fans normally get what they want. They wanted to fire Herm, they wanted to hire Mangini. They wanted to fire Mangini. They wanted to get far. Remember it was get far, get far, get far. So it's like, you know, the Jets fans get what they want, but they're not really getting at the end of the day what they want. And here's the problem with the Mangini situation. You don't hire a 34 or 35 or however old he was when he started. 34 year old young head coach who has no prior experience and And then think that they're just gonna be the best thing on the planet three years in a row I mean he was man genius the first year because he's 10 and 6 and gets to the playoffs the next year He's a goat because he's left with you know Some pieces of a team that maybe was falling apart goes 4 and 12 the next year and and again This is where the history I think will be written I don't think that Mangini wanted Farv, and that's what the story is starting to be saying. He didn't want Farv. Farv was pushed upon him. Woody Johnson wants to sell PSLs and so push Farv on him. Justin: Yeah, I think Woody Johnson's a starfucker, personally. I mean, he is. I don't think he's a starfucker. I think he is. Jake: I think he... No, I don't... you I don't think he's a star fucker. I think the problem with him is he's trying to sell PSLs and he's caught in this position where he's got to. But let's talk about Mangini for a second. So Mangini is given three years. He's in the playoffs in one year. He's almost there in the second year. He's winning record. For two years he's a winning record in a very tough division, right? I mean three teams. above nine and ten and eleven. Uh, kind of a weak division last year. Last year was a weak division, but let's talk about this. You're not going to get the best coach who makes no mistakes out of a guy who's never played before. You've got to be sticking with him for the time. You know, when you talk about Kaur, and we'll talk about the coaching carousel that's going on now, If you talk about cower... I mean the guy was there for 15 fucking years before he won a Super Bowl or whatever 14 years ago there was a period which cowards time in there in the middle where he went I was looking
01 Jake: this up because I want to see what his record was where he went in this five in this seven in this if he was in New York he would have been fired because he couldn't get it done you're not getting the playoffs you're out of here oh then by the way he goes on years later and wins the Super Bowl so The point is, the Jeff Foxes and whatever, you stick with them and they'll do it, but you can't just fire everybody after three years and say, okay, well, let's just move on to the next guy. Again, I don't think he's, I think Mangini will be better, probably for having lost his job. He certainly was a very, very smart guy. He certainly had a lot of X's and O's experience, but at the end of the day, he didn't have gut instinct. point. and he didn't know when you dropped the X's and O's off at the end zone or whatever when you walk on and sometimes you just gotta play by your gut and he never and he wouldn't learn that and so he always played the X's and O's and always tried to outthink his opponent and didn't know what I didn't know what I think some players that could just pound it through as opposed to Justin: play by the gut on that on that very point I did he ever play no Well First of all, I believe Parcel did play second I don't think he power was a player Jeff Fisher was a player There are a lot of these coaches are players and if they didn't play in the pros they played in college for maybe was the player Yes, I can name a bunch of crappy coaches to that would play of course you can but there's there's a different perspective that You get on the game when you're on the field for one of them Um, then when you're not, I'm not saying it had a negative effect or any, it does have an effect. Okay. When you're, when you're coaching with your brain and not with your gut and you've never actually experienced the thing on the field, maybe that's the reason. Um, you know, I'm just throwing it out there. Um, you know, I think you have some valid points, especially about the, you know, I Yeah. I agree wholeheartedly because the personal experience, you know, when you hire someone young, you're kind of investing in your future with that person. And by cutting yourself short after three years, you're saying to yourself, well, why, you know, what am I doing? I shouldn't expect that much out of this person. I'm thinking six, seven years down the road with this person. But again, I think Woody... is a little bit of a star fucker. He put some money into the team, he then went out and got the best quarterback ever and you know, was expecting a little bit more and then when you go 8-3... The expectation levels when you then you know your schedule then looks Like you should probably win four of your next five when you're hot as hell and you're eight and three and then you lose for your next five Jake: That that never never goes well He couldn't keep his team up and I think I think the reason why in the end I agree
01 Jake: He should have been fired or whatever was that he certainly lost the team there towards the end They stopped playing also losing all of those four on the road was just abysmal again Justin: For those last five games when you're eight and three and you're looking at you know, San Francisco, Seattle Buffalo, Miami, you know, these are winnable games You know You're looking at these games Denver was the sputtering Denver team at that point wouldn't even end up making the playoffs themselves God But but then again, I mean even if we would have snuck in there We got in our ass Jake: About the coaching carousels, I don't know if you've been reading up on who's out there a little bit a little bit Justin: I know I know we've been you know, just today Woody Met with Schottenheimer and I know he's planning on tomorrow meeting with Callahan, the offensive line coach, who's the former Raiders coach, I believe, right? Jake: Let me go through the big list. So let's throw the people that are out because they're not in. Cowher is out. He just said he's out. He's out, he's not in the mix. Here are the people that are in the mix. So Brian Schottenheimer of the Jets, offensive coordinator. I just wanna yay or nay from you. Nay. Nay. Bill Collahan, Jets. Nay. Nay. Steve Spagnolo, Giants defensive coordinator. Yay. Rex Ryan, Ravens defensive coordinator. Justin: I'm on the fence on that one. Russ Grimm, Cardinals assistant head coach. Again, I'm on the fence. I don't know Russ Grimm. I know Rex Ryan. I don't know Russ Grimm. Jeff Jagodinsky. Boss College. I'm a nay on a on a first time. Jake: We yeah, we got to learn a lesson. Brian Billock. Justin: I'm a yay on him. Jake: Interesting. Ron, Ron Rivera, Chargers defensive coordinator. Justin: I'm a yay on him, too. Jake: Leslie Frazier, Vikings defensive coordinator coordinator. I don't know him, so I'm gonna- Gotta be nay on any guy named Leslie. Ron Meeks, Indianapolis defensive coordinator. No. I mean, first of all, defensive coordinator for Indianapolis, they almost always lose because their defense isn't showing up. So I don't know why that's even. So let's go through the choices and I'll just give a little five second on it. Brian Schottenheimer, I think it's interesting. thing. for one sake only because he knows the team. And if you think that this team can do something next year, you put Brian Schottenheimer, you pay him a little, you don't have to pay him a ton of money, you put him in for next year, you give him a shot, but basically you're hoping that someone else bigger shows up a year after that. Justin: the only reason why I would... Hire Brian shot Nimer is if I got a really big shot defensive coordinator. That's true and be like Almost not co-head coach but like, you know, give them that assistant head coach
01 Justin: Title like that title above coordinator like cuz I'd be honest I don't want that's why I said Nate a shot and I'm here and Callahan because I want a new fresh kind of Jake: Oh, Bill Callahan has been remember he's been a head coach before he did Justin: No, no, I want to I want a fresh face meaning nobody who was associated with team this year Jake: Okay, so Steve Spag no, so Bill can he's out Steve Spagnolo Giants? I mean that's he's a good defensive coordinator. He came as I don't know if he's a defense back or defensive coordinator from, it wasn't the defense coordinator, it must have been a back coach. Justin: He was an assistant to the, you know, Jimmy John, what the hell is his name? Yeah. The amazing defensive coordinator for the Eagles, I forget his name. Jake: So that's an interesting choice, but again, still giving someone who's just done good in his job a better job, but maybe he won't be doing it. Rex Ryan's the same thing. I mean... I kind of feel like on this since we've taken our shots with with Herr Medwards and Eric Mangini two youngish, you know Up-and-coming guys who were given, you know the chance to be in a high coach both who look pretty poor now I mean her now was gonna be fired from KC and I was done nothing over there and he took over a freaking Rolls Royce and he drove into the ground. So I love the, I love the, gotta give it to someone who's, who has the experience. I, I actually think the one that, that makes the most sense, might not even be the best choice, but it makes the most sense is Brian Billock. Here's a couple of reasons. I happen to agree on this one with you. He... Would him in the media would get along great because he'll be out there he'd be spitting fire He'd be telling everybody why they're fucking assholes and the New York media will eat that shit up. They love it It's a it's also a big name that people know he has a ring. So he's done that It's funny that he got a ring, you know, he's always known as a offensive coordinate offensive genius But his offense always stunk. Well, that's what I like about him. Oh, really? Justin: Well, I like the fact that he was known as like an offensive guru anyone with a defensive team It means that he's open-minded and willing to just use the team that he has to the best of its abilities. I like that about him. He has won a Super Bowl with a shit quarterback. I like that about him. The media thing doesn't really matter to me. I don't really care. the man genie was, you know. He was horrible with the mania. He was like a piece of toast. He was like, you know, he's like so bland. And then Herme was, you know, awesome. But at the end of the day, I don't give a shit. Win games. And that's all I really care about. What would be interesting is, you know, Brian Billick would probably bring in his whole team, like his whole staff, meaning you'd lose, you know, the Schottenheimers. You'd lose the Callants. I imagine that they have to get rid of... What's his face? Defensive coordinator. Bob Sutton. Bob Sutton, right? He has to go. And it would be interesting to see if Bill could attract some of the coaching talent that he had
03 Justin: around him in Baltimore, particularly on the defensive side. I know Rex Ryan's available, but I think he's again, see Rex Ryan would be one of the guys that I would try and, you know, if you were hiring a Schottenheimer, you know. Maybe entice Rex Ryan to come over as like an assistant head coach and defensive like defensive head coach or something Yeah to bring some you know some Legitimacy to that side of the ball because to be honest the Jets aren't even that great of a team and you're gonna fire their Head coach and hire one of their coordinators And then what? He's going to be in charge of both sides of the ball, because he did so great with that one side. You know? Jake: I agree. But there's also the guy you know, and he knows the team. I'm not saying it's the best choice. Here's my problem with the, I don't know if anybody would come from the Ravens and then go just be the same thing he is. I just think we need someone who, oh here's my problem with the firing, going back to the firing. Don't fire somebody unless you know who you're going to get. Don't fire man genie within two seconds and then spend three weeks trying to find a guy. I feel like if you're going to fire a guy, you better know for sure you got a good guy lined up. Literally ready to sign the contract. And maybe you can't do that under NFL rules, whatever. But I feel like they fired a guy, and then everybody thought Caller. But apparently, Caller never even kind of came close. He didn't even want to go back. So anyway, it's interesting. Justin: By the way, is there an African-American on that list? Jake: There is not. So they do have to. There has to be, right? I know. They have to be. So they will have to figure out someone to. No, no, no. Sorry, the guy from Arizona. Well, that's why he's on the list. Is it Russ Grimm? Or maybe it was a guy—oh, maybe not. Anyway, so that's the coaching carousel. Let's also talk a little bit, because it does—it does connect up is the F.A.R.F. Because a lot of people are saying, you know, whether the F.A.R.F. comes back or not actually helps or hurts with coaching. You know, some people are saying that, you know, Brian, the reason some coaches don't want to come back is because they won't. say you have to get rid of Farr. So just give me a quick take on whether Farr should return or not. Justin: In the beginning of the year when we first got Farr, I wanted a two-year commitment. I know. At least you remember you were stupid. I wanted to see him play this year. Then next year because I thought you know if you're gonna go ahead with it this year. You're not gonna get anything Yeah, you know it's not like we got a magic hat and we can just pull another quarterback out for next year You know you may as well Whatever Anyway, I don't even know what you said Derek Anderson. No, sorry anyway I think Brett should probably just go. It looked apparent to me that he was shot by the end of the year and he had that little bum shoulder that you know, I
01 Justin: feel Okay, that's no excuse Chad. Chad Pennington the guy with the shittiest arm played with a torn you know, torn up shoulder through the playoffs. So no excuse there with the little torn biceps that can be handled with little uh arthroscopic surgery. He looks shot, he looked like an old man and that means next year he's not getting younger, he's gonna look even older. So maybe instead of getting off you know and playing well in the first 10 or 12 games he'll only play well in the first eight. Granted he'll know the offense. A year in the offense, maybe, you know, he's never over the past 17 years, he hasn't had to learn a new offense. He's had the same offense. So a year, at least the last 10. Um, maybe he'll get better, but again, new coach, new offense. So I don't think that helps, uh, unless it's Schottenheimer. Maybe that's where the twist comes in. I don't know. You know, maybe they say we want farv one more year star fucker woody gets his farv He hires shoddy to stay for one year. Keep the seat warm. You get your farv. You get your shoddy. Whatever I don't know maybe that's how it plays out. I hope not. I hope woody's not thinking that way. I hope he's thinking Let's win a championship and I think in order to do that you saw it in miami I know we weren't 1 in 15, but it felt that way the way we collapsed you have to Change the culture you have to wipe the slate clean get rid of a couple guys on the team that you know Lavernius Cole's to me looked like a guy who quit eight weeks ago You know get rid of him. He could go play for Miami. They need receivers You know I I don't want the far back in it especially if If it's going to keep coaches away that want to come coach, or guys that we want to hire aren't going to come, if Farr is going to be there, that's bad. No, you got to start a crash. With that said, though, I think Bill could probably handle him. Jake: I don't think, no, Bill, I mean, unless he's just going to build some amazing defense that you barely need a guy back there. But I don't think that's it. The Farr experiment was fun. in. I think we'll talk about this a lot probably in the next 100 podcasts, but it was a fun experiment. It turned the city of New York on its head. It made a fun, it was a fun story. As a jet fan, it was fun going to the games because the farb and the farb magic. I mean, God damn it, it was fun. We did better, we were four and 12 last year. We went nine and seven this year. That's not bad. It's not great. That's not bad. Again, but I think it's over, right? That was a fun thing. We let's just call it what it was. It was a fun experiment. It didn't work out. Let's move on. Let's get a real coach with some real experience and let's bring him in here and let's do it like most people do, which is a one or two year plan to rebuild the team, get them back in the playoffs, get them in the playoffs next year and hopefully do some damage in there. All right. So let's move on. Let's talk a little bit of now. Let's go talk a little bit about the wildcard weekend, because we saw some friends of ours play in the wildcard weekend. Justin: Oh my god.
00 Justin: Oh my god. We could just quickly go over. Oh my lord. Jake: Did you watch all four games? Justin: I watched three and a half. I did not watch too much of the Minnesota Eagles game. Jake: So. How about we go game by game give me a couple thoughts just per game We'll leave the Miami game to the last game. All right, so starting in he was Atlanta Falcons It was the rookie quarterback at the oldest. I tell ya Justin: Arizona looked a lot better than I thought they looked a lot better than everyone thought they would The rookie quarterback certainly looked a little frazzled in the second half especially he made one mistake and that was that they couldn't run the ball all year atlanta won by running the ball and i was commenting i was watching the game my roommate um i haven't seen them play one time this year who fauquers yeah i don't have the nfl ticket like you like you do and you've never you haven't even seen i've watched the games they're not on no i have not seen them play what they were never on tv this year in new york um I didn't know what to expect and Arizona just kind of ran right over them. Literally, they even came out and ran the ball with Edward James which was interesting because they haven't been doing that all year. But that was a good game. I liked it. I like Arizona. They're a fun team to watch when they're really cooking. and I actually had the thought... Kurt Warner wouldn't have been a bad quarterback in the Jets offense because of the way he plays. Jake: But if he's heading for better receivers, we have crappy receivers. Justin: In the Jets offense though, Kurt Warner, his skills are almost ideal for the Jets offense. Jake: Yeah, I agree. The Falcons game is a good game. Again, I like close games in the playoffs. Matt Ryan, I hadn't watched a lot of them. I've watched Kurt Warner get destroyed here in the Meadowlands. but No, I thought they I didn't think they were gonna win. I actually picked the Falcons win that game So I was surprised that that they came out they ran the ball They're much more aggressive and they shut down the run it's like they turn their they look to me a little bit like the like the Cults of two years ago where their defense just wasn't showing up all season But then the playoffs just showed up don't know if they'll continue but maybe they will so then What about the second game of that one was actually the Indianapolis Colts going to the Chargers? What do you think about that game there? Justin: Darren Sproles big time. Jesus. Big time, little guy big time and played. I hate Philip Rivers, though. Yeah, he really. I really hate him. And, but do you know what? San Diego wins without receivers. They win with a great running game, and a tight end, and a quarterback that doesn't even have that great physical skills. Just gets it done. Interesting team.
02 Justin: Ron Rivera is their defensive coordinator, as you mentioned his name, for uh, for as one of the guys through the Jets. He was also the defensive coordinator of the year. Um, Chicago went to the Super Bowl and they went there on the strength of their defense. So, uh, pretty strong candidate there who knows a bunch of different styles of defense too, so. You know, it'll be interesting to see them move on. And who do they play next week, San Diego? Steelers at Steelers. They play at the Steelers. Yeah, that'll be an interesting matchup. I think they're done, one and done. Yeah, if Tomlinson can't go. Jake: Well, we'll talk about Peyton Manning. Tomlinson is a waste of space in the playoffs. He has sat on the sidelines in the playoffs for years now. Let's move on. Interesting to watch Peyton Manning, by the way. just who is so on fire. I think it's like nine games in a row or eight games in a row he won to kind of just kind of not get it done in the playoffs. Again, I thought the Colts were gonna win. I was wrong about that. Justin: You know what the Colts need to do? Stop resting that last game. They do it every year and then they lose. Jake: Yeah, that's the truth. Thank you. I'll say a little bit about this if you didn't watch most of the game. I thought the Eagles Vikings game, man, the Eagles just play like out of their mind. I mean, Viking actually played better than I thought they would. They kind of stuck it in there. But the Doc McBibnab on third and whatever, third and 10, third and 11, third and nine, that guy just sticks it right to the guy. Bye. Straight in front of him in the slot every time and makes it down They let me ask you a question eagles hold on the Eagles started at like their own five yard line at their own four yard I saw that drive. I saw that drive. I mean they just and they it wouldn't stop them. They would just say okay fine They don't have much of a running game. They use Westbrook basically all over the place I was very impressed if that team had a really good running back my god. They'd be unstoppable They have a great defense. They do. His name is Brian Westberg. No, but he's not a really good running back. He's a really good all over the place guy. Justin: He's a Leon Washington. Jake: Yeah, but that's not enough. They need a guy who can pound it when they need to pound it. That's the problem. Justin: Let me ask you a question. Yep. How badly do you wish that the Eagles, instead of going 9, 6, and 1, went? 7 and 9. Would that have actually meant anything to the Jets? What if Andy Reid was fired and they wanted McNabb out of town? Oh, you mean just pick them both up? They were both being run out of town earlier on in the season. Oh my god, that would be phenomenal.
02 Justin: does to prepare for big games. Games after a bye week they never lose when he has time to prepare. These big games like this, I mean, you don't make, you know, four straight conference championship games and a Super Bowl. If you're not, you know, we always make fun of the bills for losing four straight Super Bowls, but it's pretty fucking impressive to get there. It's really hard as we've seen. Actually, I've never seen the Jets play in my lifetime. Jake: You probably won't. All right, let's talk a little bit about the last game. The last game, although it H was the morning game on Sunday. It's actually a game I had. We had purchased tickets to go to the game, but I was starting to do the math, and it ended up being over $2,000 to go down for two days. It just made no sense. Justin: But I should be glad you didn't go. I will. You were going to go with the way for the Dolphins fan. And that would have been miserable flight home. Jake: It would have been. It was pretty brutal run here anyway. I know. And I'll. Clearly what happened is the Ravens defense showed up. I remember when the Jets, the Jets, but the Ravens not last year. Pennington two years ago. Justin: Chad Pennington cannot beat the Ravens. and that the Wildcat, which I think is effective, especially when they throw their wrinkles in off of it. Like once they catch you like two or three times in the Wildcat and then they run a wrinkle off of it where, you know, maybe Ronnie Brown's throwing the ball or they pitch back to Chad to throw the ball. Then they start getting you and their little end arounds. You know, they had that chance with the end around. Nothing was going the Dolphins way. They had that chance and it looked like Ted Ginn had an opening, but he fumbled the ball 15 yards backwards and they couldn't score. I mean, nothing was going the Dolphins way. They had no chance. And I'll say one thing about Baltimore. They end up scoring points, whether it's their defense, where they're offense, but they put up 27 points. Yeah. Well, with that quarterback, that quarterback has a fucking rifle on. Jake: Yeah, he does. Justin: I mean, huge to. like he threw that one ball at the end of the half to Mason, like 40 yards on a rope to his back shoulder on the sideline, make a tiptoe catch as if it was a 10 yard out.
03 Justin: I mean, zipped it in there from 40 yards down the field. Jake: I'll say the thing that was clear when I was watching that game and I was trying not to say anything to my wife, but I was texting other people. And I think you and I, I think we text each other at the exact, which is really scary. We text each other at the exact same time. I'll put my phone right now to look at it. The exact same time and almost the exact same thing. Justin: Yeah, I remember I said, I think I said... Dolphins fans meet Chad Pennington. Jake: Yeah, you did. And I think I said to you, I mean, it was like it was something so funny that was like, I can't believe that we both said the same thing. Justin: Yeah, it was like the text crisscrossed in midstream. Jake: Yeah, it's the thing. He threw four picks, setting a new all time record for the Dolphins for picks in the postseason. Think about that. Justin: It's like more than half of the court. more than half the interceptions he threw the entire season he he so sevens Jake: for the season and he throws four in the playoffs on believable it's almost like they just gave up on their plan i i don't know i've been watching the dolphins all season i don't know what happened none Justin: of the shit that they run Jake: works against baltimore because they're too and they're too good on defense that's all but they had a chance and ed reid is literally everywhere They just gave up on the run game and have five turnovers. Five turnovers. Not winning the game with five turnovers in the playoffs. Have you ever seen a safety play as well as Justin: Ed Reed has played the last bunch of games? No. Jake: Ed Reed is just unbelievable. Justin: How insane was that one interception that he made? Forget the one that he got for the touchdown. I mean, that was pretty cool. Over the shoulder catch and run. No, the one where he almost fell, but I kept running for the 10 yards. Did you see where he started on that play? Yeah, way the hell away. He was like... way the hell on the other side of the field. And he just started running and is like, where's he running? Oh, where the ball's going to be in three seconds from now. Like, like, he like has this inane ability to just run where the ball's going to eventually be. Jake: That was unbelievable. Again, I, you know. As a jet fan, you know, you kind of want to root for Chad, but then you don't want to roof the dolphins. Having them go out in that fashion is actually, it makes you feel a little bit good, but then, you know, now no one in the AFCs is in the playoffs and that's a good thing. But man, oh man, it'll be interesting to see next year whether they're painting, whether he's their starter or not. I say no, I bet my bet my guess is they do an open competition and then they give it to one of the rookies because they Feel like that's the way they got to go but good on good on Parcells, man He does keep his magic and and spagnole and that's back hole in Sperrano and they did some amazing stuff. They took a crap team that probably shouldn't have won more than five games and turn them into a into a good game. I will say, I bet you they have a fallback. I said this all season. I said this before on the podcast. Justin: Oh, yeah, totally a fallback. They are the 06 Jets.
01 Justin: They are the 06 Jets. Jake: We went 10 and 6. They went 11-5. We both went in the playoffs. Justin: Oh, the schedule gets a little harder when you win the division. Jake: And I don't think they're going to, I don't think their talent level is big enough. Yeah. Justin: The schedule does get harder when you win the division. They played the division winners. We came in third in our division. It actually helps us for next year. Jake: Oh, good. Now let's start talking about the draft. I'm serious. It does. So let's talk about the, let's talk, let's give us some, let's do a final finish up here with our thrown picks. We'll pick the playoffs, since that's what we have to pick. We got four games. Alright, I'm gonna name. I'm gonna read off all the teams give you five seconds to think We have a little seconds. I'm gonna leave you Baltimore, Tennessee San Diego at Pittsburgh Philadelphia at Giants and Arizona at Carolina Give me your winners and scores for those Justin: Okay Jake: Baltimore Tennessee score more at Tennessee Justin: This is going to be one of those games that is going to be so fun to watch because these two teams are going to beat the crap out of each other. Literally, they're going to beat the crap out of each other. I think it's going to actually turn out to be a really close game that Tennessee is going to end up winning, most likely by a field goal. I'll go 16-13 Tennessee. Jake: You know, I disagree. I think this is the one upset on the road this week. I'd love to go to that Eagles game for the update But I'll upset on things gonna happen. I think Baltimore is on a high. They're gonna go into Tennessee just like the Jets did I think they will play conservative enough I think they'll be able to open up enough with Haynes worth maybe not playing with Moi not playing with I mean, I don't I don't think so I think they go in there and they beat the but they don't beat the bejesus out them but they win I think they win 24 17 the San Diego at Pittsburgh the Justin: their their their days that the they're peaking right now which is great but Pittsburgh is going to put smack down remember this is 18 that now has to fly all the way across the country which is not easy. You know, the West Coast teams don't do that well on the East Coast and vice versa. And I'll say the same for the Arizona Carolina game. I just think their time is done. Tomlinson's going to sit on the sideline and Sproul's not going to be able to do that against Pittsburgh. They're too big and strong. I I think in the end Pittsburgh is gonna win this game somewhere 2413 range Jake: Now you're close. I call it 13 to 28 You know for all the top. Yes that the trip is bad
01 Jake: The playing in Pittsburgh in the cold for a West Coast team that's used to San Diego weather Everything boats know well for them some little figure, you know what to do to put Paul Marlow Spying sprawls and that'll be it. That's all I need to do and they will win this game Only thing I worry about is I worry about brothes burger, you know, he was had a concussion. Hopefully he's back. I take Pittsburgh wins 2812 Philadelphia at the Giants here in the middle and 12 really 12 12 Justin: Wow, okay. The Giants versus the Eagles. This is interesting matchup because I think they played last year in the wild card game maybe in Philly. Yeah, I think this is a reverse. No, that's not right. No, they did. They did. They played Tampa. Tampa and Dallas last year. Anyway, whatever. You know, they play each other a couple times each year. This will be the third Jake: Philadelphia lost it. Philadelphia is this year and they won on the road Justin: Against the Giants because they play. Yeah, I think the Giants are gonna be you know, a little too Too tough for the Eagles coming off of that big win for the Eagles It'll be a good game though, that's for sure. It won't be like a cakewalk for the Giants. I think it'll be, I'll say, 31-28. Jake: Interesting. I'm calling it, like, 38-28. 31-28. Yeah, you see this like I see it. I see it as a close game. I think. Thank you for watching! Thanks for watching! If this is the team that I'll probably look back at the Super Bowl and go just like I did with the Giants last year when I picked against them the whole time, they'll be like, God damn it. Look, how did I pick against them? I pick against the Giants the whole year and I mean the whole postseason until the Super Bowl, then I picked the win. But I think that Philly can win this game. They have a good shot of win Super Bowl to roll through here. I'll give it to I'll give it to. the Giants though at home a week off I just don't think there's I don't think Justin: there's it'll be close especially if Brandon Jacobs is gonna play and he's Jake: supposed to so yeah 29 26 Giants win then the last scores I know and in the last game the Cardinals flying to the Carolina Panthers yeah I think this is Justin: gonna be the one game the one game this go-round or this weekend that is not going to be that close and won't be that great of a game. Although I guess I did say that about the Pittsburgh too. I don't like these West Coast teams coming across to play these East Coast teams. Carolina is a team that is, you know... built for this this playoffs they have a great running game with the two running backs and have big play guy in Steve Smith and experienced enough quarterback who's
01 Justin: you know been to the Super Bowl with a good coach too So, um... I'm going to take Caroline in this game. I think that they're going to even run up the score. It's going to be like 35-14. Jake: Yeah, I agree. Arizona's being 0-4 on the East Coast. That just sets them up for a big loss. I didn't think they were going last week, but they pulled it out. This is a 31-20 game. Carolina just beats him up and that's the end of this. And that is the end of this podcast. We are going to see you next week for... Really? Really though? We shouldn't even promise that. Yeah, let's just promise it because then we'll do it. Justin: Well, okay. So next week for the championship weekend? Yeah, that's right. Jake: And then we'll do one between the championship weekend and the Super Bowl, which is there's two weeks in there, so we could squeeze it in there. We'll do one after Super Bowl. We'll do a recap of our picks, what we thought the season was going to be. We'll talk about who's the coach at that point. The exciting Pro Bowl. And the not exciting Pro Bowl at all. What do you mean? Justin: We got like seven players in that game. Jake: Yeah, I don't want the Pro Bowl. Interesting, though, that the NFL is moving the Pro Bowl to Dude. Next year they're moving it to or maybe two years the moving it to Miami And they're moving it to the week in between the Super Bowl and the playoffs and I think that's brilliant Because I saw that that week is a dead week It'd be great to watch something football, but after the Super Bowl. I don't give a rat's butt So at least give me something on that on that on that weekend to do. So that is it. That is it for us this week. Sorry about the delay, but we gave you a nice long, at least an hour long podcast. As always head on over to JetKingdom.com, www.jetkingdom.com, post in the forums, hit up the polls, read some of the articles, including my article. The Ruhr's rant, which was entitled, Before You Fire The Mangini, Remember The Chad, which I got commented on by Justin there, I think. And that is it. Until next time, as always, even though they're out of the playoffs, you can still. Go Jets! You
