03 Jake: This is episode 70 of the Jekkynan Podcast for Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Hard Knock Homeless. Justin: of the women. Jake: Well welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. As always, after a month's delay, it's me, Jake, on this side of the digital aisle and And joining me after his break. Clearly, uh, Unshaven, as always, is my good friend Justin. Justin, how you doing? Uh, why do you say break? Well, we haven't had a- we haven't had a podcast in about a month. Justin: Oh, yeah, break from podcasting. Yeah, I'm usually unshaven during those times, cuz, um, you know... I don't need to keep my professional look going. And this time we have a digital aisle. Last time we didn't. Last time I think we did a show we were... Wasn't that the show that we were together in the same room? Jake: It was. I listened to it. It sounded pretty good. It wasn't bad, but it's a little bit echo. Justin: Yeah, it was a big room. It wasn't set up for the acoustics. And I... Next time we'll go to a real recording studio. Jake: And it's two steps forward, one step back because in that episode we had people calling in. That's true. And then this episode our number got disabled. That sucks. We're sorry guys. Justin: We know at least one person tried to call in and couldn't get in, but we will take your question via the Twitter as opposed to having the live call in and we promise we will. make every attempt to get that number fixed. Jake: You know what? I'm so upset that I will go out and I'll get an 888 number. I just got to find one that looks good for us. Justin: How about a 900 number? Jake: Yeah, we'll make money on it. Those haven't been around in a while. No, I don't think they exist anymore. So let's go to our agenda. So we're going to talk about the. uh Justin: Rangers getting out of the playoffs. No, wait. Oh, okay. Yeah, let's not talk about any sports that get played at Madison Square Garden It's too depressing Jake: Alrighty, so let's talk about some offseason moves So we're gonna talk about sort of basically the stuff that's happened the big stuff that's happened since we left We last talked last time we were talking about the theory of whether we could get interested in karmarti whether what daniel thomas was gonna sign you know and and all these other things including you know receivers well look what a month later and uh... until new karmarti's ours what they went on our uh... with dave and thomas since ours and we just uh... yesterday signed
01 Jake: uh... santonia homes traded um... Sorry traded for and so we got a lot to talk about but let's kind of go down the order of the way it happened Oh, you know, we'll hit some the hit. I think we have four tweets this week. So we got a lot to get to So we'll just hit the main agents I think probably the they'll be talking about some of the stuff that we're gonna talk about so we'll get to the main stuff so The first one was really the money night football game. So before we had talked, there was a talk of who's going to be the first game. And basically it came down to like an NFL thing of they were going to do a flip and then they were upset because they didn't do the flip in front of everybody. Net net is Jets play first preseason game in giant stadium. Excuse me giant stadium. No, no, no, no, no New Meadowland City. Oh, God. Oh, how did you do that? Let's start this part. Let's start this podcast Welcome to jet Kingdom podcast and in New Meadowland City. Um, so yeah That's awesome. And then we get the first Monday night game. So I'm happy. I don't think there's much of a much to talk about other than... Justin: No, not... nothing controversial. I think it's cool. We have a Monday Night Football game to open the season on National Television. Jake: And we have a Monday Night Preseason game which we will be at. Justin: And we're pretty awesome. I mean, we're fun to... Jake: And I'm going to Bon Jovi! Justin: Waaaaaaah! You're going to that? Yeah. I know another person who's going to that and like, oh, you guys are old. Jake: Anyway, a kid rock in Bon Jovi? To everybody out there, I could give a rat's 2D about Kid Rock. Or actually, Kid Rock, I care about Mora. But I'm actually interested to go sit in the stadium. Sorry. Justin: Well, we've already actually sat in the stadium. Have we had a podcast since then? Jake: No. Wow. So let's leave that to a different episode. Really? Yeah, because we're going to get someone on who's really, I already talked to him today, can't come on this week, but maybe next week. Again, there's a lot of off season to talk about, and stadium's going to be a good thing to talk about in the off season. We've got real news today, so let's leave the stadium. Let's go this way. We've been on the field. you Yes, we've been on the field. It was awesome. All right, so let's talk about the first pick up. Going back a month or so, got rid of Thomas Jones right before the trade started. He went off and got signed by the Chiefs. Then we picked up, we were talking about it, whether we thought that Ladeem and Tomlinson should come or not, or whether we're going to pick him up. It was literally that day that it was happening. I think he was signed the next day. uh... what do you think what's your what's your take on it now that's been a while and we've kind of seen the outcome it's been a while uh... what i Justin: had said i think i believe what i said on the podcast was i will be fine with signing thomas and if we sign him for far less money than we were going to
02 Justin: Now, does LTF2 Seasons left in him? I don't know. But I still think he can be a very effective player that only has to touch the ball 10 times a game for the Jets. A veteran who can step in and doesn't at this point seem like, you know, I think there would have been a burden had Thomas Jones stayed of feeling the need to feed him the ball more. With a new guy coming in, you don't have that burden on you of this guy was the man on this team for the last three years. So you sort of alleviate that pressure on Sean Green and even on the coaching staff to keep Thomas Jones in there if he wasn't being effective. Even though they were a nice one-two punch towards the end of last season, Green and Jones. But LT is proven man, I mean he didn't even have a very good season last year and he still scored 12 or 13 touchdowns The guy is a short yardage guy. He can sniffs the goal line He can score touchdowns with the best of them and he could catch the ball out of the backfield So I don't see a downside in having one of the best players in the league for the last 10 years on your team Particularly if you already know that he's not going to the starter you're not really gonna count on him to be LT of five years ago. He's not gonna get 300 carries. He's gonna touch the ball ten times a game maybe. He's gonna catch one or two passes and I think it's a it's a fine signing. He knows the offense very well. It's the same offense. So I think it's a it's a it's a good signing, you know a good backup running back or a one-two punch with green. Jake: Yeah, I mean, I think my gut feeling, especially we'll talk about this as we come to the other players we kind of add to the team, I like it from all the reasons you said, and I agree that it's, you know, there doesn't seem to be a downside in terms of production. I think, you know, we'll look at what Thomas Jones does behind that sieve of the chief line against what you know what a me and thomas and does it behind the new york jets you know one of the best lines in the league we'll look at what that happens i will say that um you know just for raw talent and kind of like where i think they are in their career i feel like thomas jones still had more to give on a day-to-day basis like i that's just my feeling from watching him from watching his power But, you know, for all the other reasons I like it. I like it for the name, I like it for that he's not the starter, I like it for the changing up the guard, right? This means Sean Green is the starter, it means that Lydian Talinson is the backup. He's a little bit younger, he's cheaper, and he's a good player. And he knows the offense and he came to where the shot he lives. And so for all those reasons I like it. But somewhere deep down inside you say didn't didn't Did the running game get better because of this? I feel like I can't honestly say yes. I can't say honestly, yeah, a guy who did 3.3 yards for carry and I can't feel like a running
07 Jake: game got better because of this move. I don't think it took a huge dip. but I don't think it got better. So in other cases we'll talk about I think you know it was a huge upgrade. This I don't feel like is an upgrade. I think maybe it's a side move maybe side to a little bit down. But you know is it is it filling a gap? Yes. Is it a good player? Will he do better? I think he will because it'd be better behind the line and behind a little fresher. I don't think like like I was Justin: saying you know there would have been pressure on the coaching staff and and on almost anybody just to not have Thomas Jones be the man. Do you understand what I'm saying? Yeah, no, I understand. Jake: He started, he was a starter last year and then Sean Green took over. But, you know. Sean Green never started. Thomas Jones continued to start all those games. Justin: And I feel as if he sort of broke down at the end of the season, especially in the playoffs, it was really Sean Green. And once Sean Green got hurt in that Colts game, it was like, oh, game over. But I feel like if you can control what Tomlinson does throughout the season, and it will be hard, you're not going to be able to measure them against each other because of all the other variables that... Happened during you know the season and who the quarterback is and what the offensive line looks like who the opponents are they're different opponents But I have the feeling that if they played the same role if LT and Thomas Jones were to play the same exact role On the team. It's pretty equal at this point in their careers and LT might have some skills that Thomas Jones just doesn't have meaning he could go catch the ball Jake: Yeah, so I I agree and I think that I think I just don't just gut feel doesn't says that we made a huge upgrade Justin: I don't think the really upgrade but it wasn't a downgrade. Let's put it that way I think it's a 1400 yard rusher from the previous season and you haven't downgraded. So I think that's good Jake: Yeah, I think it's I think it's a slight downgrade, but I think we'll be pick it up with other things I think the passing game will be better. I think it I think we'll have Sean Green will be better as a back. He'll be a starter. So I think we'll get other stuff back from it. But OK. So we got other stuff. So then going down the news wire, and I get, I guess, kind of off base here in terms of what we're talking about in order. But the Jets got picked to be on HBO as the hard knocks. So. Just to let everybody who doesn't know what the show is which you should you'll now be ordering HBO Cuz if I listen to this show you will probably want to watch that one go to HBO Dot-com slash Jet Kingdom to sign up First person does that gets nothing gets it gets a 404 page exactly So yeah, so so the think it's been I want to say six seven years
00 Jake: Um, it I remember some of the seasons. I I don't think I watched a ton I really remember actually the season I watched the most was the Chiefs because that's right season. Yeah, I watched that a lot of It's a lot of jets fans sort of you know Kind of watching it to make fun and uh, and I admit I kind of did a little bit of that as well Um, you know, so this is a two-sided affair for me. I am totally excited that they are going to take 25 hours a week of tape of taping of these practices and they're gonna boil it down to to one hour into five You know five weeks worth of segments not a lot It's only five hours of total show but they're boiling down whatever that is and math 125 hours worth of tape Justin: I want that raw footage. I Jake: Mean from a fan's point of view as a jet fan to watch more stuff jets Awesome. Super cool. From a JED fan who thinks that, you know, here's the thing that I came back to, okay, as a JED fan who just wants to immerse himself in all things JEDs, great. From a JEDs fan who wants to win games this season, there's nothing about this that'll make the team more competitive. So then to me it's like it's not like an off-season move like picking up somebody or trading somebody or or in the draft or Or moving to courtland which they're doing again, which is not big news at all, but whatever There's nothing in there that like can help there's this is only a negative play At the at the if it's the best season ever it's still just a flat because it can't make you more competitive to be on TV It's just not there's nothing about it that can make you more competitive. I'm not sure it hurts though Well, I think I think that's the problem. It's all downside why there's because there's no website There's no this this there's no upside to the to being on why is it a downside like why I'm telling why could there? Let me let me ask you this. I know Distraction is a distraction. I'm not sure that that's true No, it is a distraction because you have people with cameras all around people with cameras all around all these guys No, no, they're not not not not at the training camps not at Cortland And, it then becomes, not only are you just people all around, cameras that no one's watching, this becomes an HBO show, which then you go back and watch, who send your buddies, text you about, hey, I saw you on that show and you looked a little slow. It becomes a distraction. Now, it's up to the coaching staff to make sure that it isn't a distraction. But again, I don't see any upside from the team. It can't make the team better. It can't make them run faster. It can't make their defense better. The only thing it can do is distract. Again, as a fan, I can't wait to watch. But as a fan who wants them to win this year, I'm like, I just don't see any upside. Give me some upside. What do you think's upside? I don't think there has to be an upside. Justin: The upside is for us. Upside is really for us. It's for the family and games this season Oh, I think that that can happen regardless of whether they're on hard knocks or not. I'll I Happen to agree with you. I'm a little split, but I'm gonna take this side of this argument
02 Justin: Just for the fun of the podcast You know, I don't think there has yet there's yet to be the team that's done hard knocks that has gone on to win the Super Bowl I don't believe Jake: Right, but it's only been said. Well, that's like saying, you know, there's yet to be a season that, that a team that was... Well, hold on. That was to support your side of the argument. Justin: Right, but that's, yeah, it's a stupid... But last year, it was Cincinnati, and everyone thought Cincinnati was gonna win like four games and they ended up making the playoffs. Was that hard knocks? No, it has nothing to do with it. Hard knocks literally has nothing to do with anything. It is just another thing that is... surrounding these players in a media crazy time of society. I mean, these guys are on Twitter. Jake: Do you think that's a distraction? Yes, yes, they're there, but they're there anyway. Okay, Justin: why not? Just it's just there. It's for us. It's for the fans. I don't think it has a negative aspect. I don't think it has a positive aspect. I just think it's there. And if Rex Ryan's not doing interviews with HBO, he's doing them with the local media. And if he's not doing it with them, he's doing it with ESPN, it doesn't matter. I really don't think it matters. And it's just going to be great for us, for the fans, for the people who do Jet Kingdom podcasts. It'll be more stuff for us to talk about. It makes the preseason more exciting. And it opens up a door that we haven't... really historically had opened for us. So I think it'll just be an interesting thing whether it helps us know, do I think it hurts us? A slight chance, slight chance there's a distraction but I don't Jake: I don't think it's that big of a deal. Yeah, I think that's the point is if there's even a slight chance of distraction, I, you know, you know what it does say though, we're entertaining as shit. Justin: We got one of the most entertaining teams in the whole league. We got one of the most entertaining coaches in the league, meaning personality-wise. That's going to be the interesting part. How many times does he stick his foot in his mouth during those interviews? Because you know he's going to say some stuff that's like... Man, wish you didn't say that about Bill Belichick. Jake: And again, I think that's all turns into, you basically take the number one media place in the world, which is New York City, and you then take a microscope that's, yes, he goes on for his press conference once a day, and he does 20 minutes of conversation, which Again, I used to listen to it all summer long. I love it. But now it's like 25 hours boiled down. I just think there's so much chance for things to hit the papers from hard knocks. You'll see. How about this? You'll see. He'll say something on hard knocks that will air on Tuesday whenever it airs. And then all, you know, the daily news, the back of the post will be like. you know, Rex rocks knocks or something and it'll be like a whole big stupid thing. And it again, hopefully won't distract, but we'll see. Justin: It's hard knocks during the preseason or is it during training camp?
01 Justin: Training camp and preseason. So through the weeks that we're watching games on the preseason, we will then see hard knocks on that Tuesday. Yes. Jake: I've never really watched the show like... That as I remember it. I watched them playing in preseason games Justin: Against the things that I do remember and do enjoy quite I did quite enjoy was watching the storylines of like rookies and guys who are like free agent sign earrings that like Might not make the team. Oh, yeah, like watching guys like just make the cut like that was the cool stuff because then you get to know Nice crack open a beer. Then you get to know a couple of these guys that like special teamers that you wouldn't necessarily know in the past. Yes, I'm jealous of your beer pouring. But that's the part that I think will be extremely interesting. You know, seeing unsigned rookie, like, you know, free edgy rookies, things of that nature that you don't really get the window into. see something on HBO and be like, ooh, I like football now. I like the Jets. Jake: Probably not. I think it will. I think it will turn the NFL's attention towards the Jets more so. Having them go to the AFC championship, the Rex Ryan factor, Daniel Tomlinson, even the stuff that we're going to talk about in two seconds, I think it'll all build up to a media feeding. Justin: frenzy this year. Oh yeah, there's expectations galore on this team. Well the kids, yeah, Jake: because wherever you get the year before, the expectation is that the very least you get there. Right, so if you're eight and eight, the next expectation is you're eight and eight that next year. This is the way it goes. If you're one in 15, the expectation is you're going to do better than one in 15. The expectation for a fan... Unless you're the Raiders. ...is you're going to do better. No, because they're usually crappy. So the expectations, they win one more game. What they won, three games last year, four games. They suck. So wherever they are now, wherever the team is now, they're going to want them to win. So the expectation at the minute that the last click off that clock in Indy that I was there for. for. The other thing is we get to get there next year, which is crazy, but it's the way it is. Anyway, so other news, we got two more pickups. Let's go the first one first, which is Antonio Camardi. Justin: Again, another trade. This was right before the free agency deadline. We should actually mention him first. But didn't we, didn't we, well I mean before LT and before?
00 Justin: uh you know earlier on but didn't didn't we mention that on the last didn't we already have him as of the last podcast we were talking about potential moves that we thought might happen and he was one of them right you know i i looked at the thing i looked at the timeline Jake: and and uh hey listen you know why. not why not about it again i'm excited Justin: I think we just signed a potential, you know, a guy who wasn't all pro and You know always was had to cover the best receiver on the field You don't have to do that when you? number 24 is on the field because Dorell Rivas will, as a matter of fact, I know we already talked about this now that I recall, but we're going to rehash this. I think we talked about it in terms of it might happen. No, it happened because I remember us not having carry roads either at that point. Yeah, of our last conversation. Well, I already started so I'll keep going down the path. But basically what I Cromartie is, you know, a former All-Pro. He comes with some baggage. You know that that I don't want to become Raiders East, but it seems like we sort of are. We're picking up some guys with some baggage which which is somewhat I want to say risky, but you know he's a talented player. We didn't have to give up much to get him and Speaking of which we did the same thing just this past week, right? We picked up Jake: This is the big news for not a whole lot So, let's lay out the plan. So, because it kind of, it's already unfolded from when it happened and so here's the deal. Fifth round pick, 2010 draft, gone, San Antonio homes, MVP from two years ago from the Super Bowl on the team and then a day later, which obviously Jess knew about because that's why it was a fifth round pick. for getting this pension this year for substance abuse. And so here's the question. So I mean if you just took it from a, you know, he had his best year, he was the best receiver on the team last year. You know, just some stats, you know, playing all the games, 1,248 yards, average of 15.8, You know, five touchdowns.
00 Jake: Like the guy, you know, I would say from the from a touchdown point of view, it wasn't so great, but a lot of yards Let's see. What's the yak? What's his average? Have it no fumbles. So I mean the guy's a good player. He has serious skills. He's got great speed. Um He's not huge, he's 5'11", he's not one of these massive guys. Fifth season, so he's got the kind of experience, but he's only 26, so there's some upside for him. But he's got baggage, there's a case against him in Florida for doing something, throwing a thing in a face or something. And there's this, and there's also a couple of things that seem to be brewing. Now, you know, I guess the question is, well first, just give me a thought on what do you think? Good, bad, indifferent, great. Great. Justin: that puts that offense over the top completely. And you got Dustin Keller who is a phenomenal tight end who's only gonna get better. So how are you gonna cover all these people? And Sanchez is just gonna mature into having all these weapons around. It's a very good situation for him. It's a very good situation for the offense and they did it the right way with the line being the solid lynch pin. So you have the line set up so that you can run the ball down people's throats if you want or you can have time To throw the ball down the field or do a mix match or whatever. I really think he adds the dimension that the Jets needed with with Edwards being on one side, on the other and and Kachere just Being that possession receiver that he is because that's really what threat He's a guy over the middle he's got great hands he could catch the ball in traffic They compliment each other really really well. and to give up a fifth round pick for a guy that That has R this much talent and upside at aanchester Think is great because you don't draft receivers and have them just work out. It just doesn't happen Jake: So yeah, I think I think you're kind of avoiding I think you're avoiding all the stuff that could possibly happen which is that like why well if anything else happens any other substance Abuse or anything else he's gone for the year. Well, I mean that's that's just all right
02 Jake: Well, that's not just anything that's the truth. What are their infraction gone for the year? Well, how about you just not be a dickhead. Justin: you know that's like that would be my advice to him yeah don't do drugs don't get caught don't have other don't get get get get get get get get get get get get get get Don't get caught. Jake: Again, I'm from the a I a and, from the riskiness, I think trending towards riskier. Here's what I think I'm worried about as a team. Are we putting together a team of, this just reminds me of the Redskins or even the Raiders. They just want to just go spend money, picks, whatever, put a whole like Where's the leadership coming from? I can see some on the defense You know you have some leadership on the offense. You got a basically a rookie quarterback. You've got a great guy back Yeah, but he's a rook no I don't know how I don't know how many of these players are gonna look at him and go You demand right they're not looking at rookies or rookies Justin: Second-year players or second-year players and guys who've started and won two games in the playoffs on the road are Jake: and And he was a huge locker room experience guy, character guy, lots of experience. Everybody really really followed behind him. You know Team has gotten better. I don This is a lot. We'll see the team. s we will. So, again, from a talent point of view, even if he's out for it, he's really brilliant. I don't think he got him until, what, six weeks?
11 Justin: four games but at least he'll have the welf he'll have the preseason the games and out and he will have a full camp and preseason games to build the chemistry and I think Braillein's even out for like week one I believe I think he's out for week one I think he might be suspended for week one Jake: I don't think so I think so because of that whole Cleveland nightclub I don't think that got I totally and Maybe down. So Tony Holmes is a big uplift, but only if he plays and only if he doesn't get suspended, only for the games he does play. And I remember, Karmarti, that's straight up. I don't think there was a, you know, him in the zone versus him man on man. I think that's going to be awesome. Justin: Yeah, remember, the defense and still, you know running the ball. So, Cromartie helps that defensive side. Jake: Alright, so let's do one of the PETA We could have picked them in the fourth and not second, but whatever. So now go for some tweets. We got, sorry for the, again, sorry for the thing. We will come up with a phone situation. That means I have to go change all the phone numbers on the website. That's a pain in the ass, but I'll do it. But I'll get one that I own, therefore I don't have to worry about it. Basically for all you out there, I was using a service, and I had forgotten, if you don't use it for 30 days, it disables itself. So I was thinking, well, there's never going to be a 30-day period. We don't use it. But of course, it was a 30-day period. So let's go to some tweets. I'll go for how many you guys have, two? Justin: Two. One is a a comment and another sort of a silly question. Jake: All? Well, go with the comment first. Go ahead. Real question. Justin: It's from Emerson Knapp or Bill Knapp on the Twitters.
04 Justin: He says he loves Trader Mike but concerned about the kicking game. We weren't blowing teams out last year, so he's concerned that we lost Feely and only signed this Nick Fulk guy. And he also went on to talk about the draft and says we must get offensive and defensive line depth. And I actually couldn't agree more. I love drafting big fat guys, particularly on the defensive line. I think we could use another in the offensive line I'm going to good comment there I agree with all those things I'm also concerned about the kicking game Jay Feely was a good kicker we lost him to Arizona and we picked up I think his name is Nick folk from the Cowboys who was actually cut by the Cowboys so whatever their kickers we probably lost a little bit there but Jake: Yes, it was Dallas Cowboys last three years. Umm, over those three years he never missed an extra point, that's good. Umm, he had, it looks like his percentages over the last three years, 2007, he was 80. Uhh, 2008 he was 90.9 and last year was 64.3, so something happened last year. New stadium maybe screw him. He made a long of 53 in 2007 a 52 in 2008 and a 51 in 2009 Yeah, not great stats and no touch kickers or whatever Jay feel it wasn't anything special when the Jets picked him up Justin: You never know different different whatever it was changed the scenery Jake: Bring back Mike Nugent He had four touchbacks in 2007 and then hasn't had any since. Interesting., yeah well he only had two kickoffs last last year. I just saw your tweet. Wow, you're tweeting while talking to me. Justin: Tweeting while talking and tweeting at San Antonio. Jake: Yeah, I saw. You must really be paying attention. Justin: I always pay attention. Jake: I agree and I tell you whatever position we have, I think we just lost our fifth round
00 Jake: pick but well I know we did. Um, whatever position we have, whatever numbers we have during the draft, and I will be in the unique position to be, you know, watching, well, not unique, but I will be dedicated to the draft at this point on that day. Um, it's Thursday night, next Thursday. Uh, I know that Trader Mike will not sit at whatever position we have. So if we have a, this pick and this pick, I will not wait and be like, oh, let me go get a sandwich because he's not going to pick for two more rounds. No, no, no. you You got to stay glued to your television because trader Mike will trade. And if he thinks a guy, like I don't think in the last three years he stayed at any position that he was supposed to. He's always traded up last year. We only had some picks, right? Cause he traded up twice. Right. So, and again, if you're two starters, so here's a clue for you jet fans. Don't turn off the TV. Don't think that because it's the sixth pick or the 10th pick or the 17th pick and we're not picking to 21 or 20, 29. What we are this year. Don't think we're not going to be in there. Wait for that. And you pick 29. Justin: That's like four hours into the show. Jake: It's basically like 11 o'clock at night. Justin: But again, forever. Jake: I don't think that's what's going to happen. I'll see a trade. You'll see something happen. Alright, so I'll go with my question. Let's see Got two questions. Let's go from Tom Shane at at Tom Shane one actually a Friend of the podcast also someone who I've known in the past like dying past life Sorry, he used to I have a picture of him sitting two seats behind me and at a Jets game He. He said podcast question What do you guys think is driving the jets change in FO front office philosophy away from character guys to nuts? He asked three questions PSL Rex or Woody So PSL being personal seat licenses again. I don't know how everybody's in the lingo PSL's personal seat licenses with the new stadium is you know, they're selling them, they're doing okay, but I'd say they're not gangbusters. You know, it being a down year financially and it being very expensive. I know I just got my invoice yesterday or two days ago. So, do you want to take a shot at it? Well, if I'm going to Justin: choose from those three, I'm going to pick Rex. I mean... that is him I it's team takes on his personality in his persona so like Sia is I sorted knots I you know he's not that character guy that typical you know white-collar button-up guy he's a a down dirty He'll curse, he will stick his middle finger up in the mye-a-oud, he will, uh, you know, eat- After being spit on, or whatever. He'll eat 8,000 in a meal, you know, he's not, um... So I, I think that there's some trust level level level level, you can take on a guy that's not a character guy, like, like a man genie, there was-
05 Justin: If this guy's not button-up and following the rules to a T, then, uh, then, uh, you know, he's gonna get fined for taking a water bottle from a dorm room. So, we can't take a guy who might do that. We have to be careful. But with Rex, I think he can handle personalities. He can coach personalities. He reminds me a lot of, Hm, this is only one year, so I don't wanna go... too crazy but for the new Yankee fans Joe Torre who managed people and he could just get the most out of a person out of an individual and wasn't trying to manage robots like kind of like Mangini was trying to do so I think there's just no fear in in picking up a quote-unquote not good character guy. And I think it really does have a lot to do with Rex and it's a testament to him actually. Jake: I will say I agree with that. I agree that he's the kind of guy you could handle it. When I was talking to Ray Ray today, you know, one of the things that he made the analogy to is a guy like Parcells, you know, who could and handle the big personalities the question is how many can you handle Justin: um he is a big boy so yeah i would say that's the thing it's like Jake: man genie like okay people you know you may be afraid of him because that coach you better be afraid of rex because it comes sit on your ass and he's a 300 pound boy He's big and you know, it's not like he won't get up in your stuff. So I think that he can handle it I don't know how many he can handle so like look at carry roads like he didn't really handle carry roads carry roads turned into Pre Madonna didn't want to do anything and then you know kind of basically walked himself out of town So I'm not so sure you can handle everybody I'm hoping some of these guys aren't really, don have this long history that needs a lot of handling, but we'll see. The other thing is, look at last year, the Denver Broncos. Who's the quarterback? Josh McDaniel's? No, the wide receiver though. Random Marshall? Random Marshall. Okay, so you remember preseason last year. I'm gonna do a Preseason last year Brandon Marshall. Oh my god. He's not showing up. He's kicking feet. He's kicking balls into the thing in practice He's not even playing. He's he got suspended you sit home for two days Everybody's all over his ass right? This is the worst thing to try and trade him. It's never gonna work out Then of course the season starts and they win a game. Then win another game. Then win another game. Then win a third game. Then win a fourth game. Justin: And he had as in the game. Jake: Right right then this is a right love. Yeah, then they started to lose and they lost and they lost and they lost and they lost.
02 Jake: And I think they went on a losing streak of six or something. Justin: They started the season like six and oh, and I think they're eight and eight. Jake: Yeah, something crazy like that. And then what happened at the end? Oh yeah, we got to trade this guy away. He started saying we don't we don't want he's a bad character. So the lesson learned is and this isn't even a big lesson that anybody should pay attention to. It matters, right? If this team comes out the gate 4-0 You're all these character issues go away the TOs of the war when they're 4-0 don't give a shit When you're 0 and 4 that's when your character guys start to have a problem, right? That's when they start chapping up and talking to media and you know when they're in the locker room So I'm like, well, what do you think happened? And why you think not me? knowing they're like, well, you know, I didn't really get the balls that they should have gotten. And you know, well, you know, maybe, maybe the, the, the, they aren't giving me the balls and put me in the game plan. And then all of a sudden just starts. So winning breeds happiness, losing breeds discontent and I think it's really not so much about whether Rex can handle it. it's about whether we are winning games or not. That's that's all right, but to answer your question, Tom Shane one at Tom Shane one. You know what? It's a mix. I don't think it's woody. I think Woody Woody last year for the first time. He saw he saw a shot of. winning the Super Bowl. I think he like a lot of jet fans kind of went oh my god we have a shot. We're just this rookie team with a rookie quarterback and rookie coach. We have a shot to get to and possibly win the Super Bowl and after you get that little taste I think he's like listen I'm all in I don't care let's do it. I'm building a 1.7 billion dollar stadium He started years ago, he's like, I want to win, I want to win a Super Bowl. Here you. Here's the keys to the castle. Go for it. Do whatever you got to do. So, I think yes. Is there a reason to get big names in there to sell tickets to PSLs? You a bet. Does Rex Ryan want to get teams to win? Absolutely. Does Willy Johnson letting people do it? You bet he is. Because I think again, he's gotten a taste of where we could be as a team and he wants to continue that and he's willing to say, you guys do it. And I trust in Tan and. Dom. He's a really good guy.... Justin: One of my favorite people to follow on Twitter because he's just hysterical. Fake underscore Rex underscore Ryan with the name Rex-Ryan kind of confusing and the picture is the You know the the middle-finger up. It's pretty, awesome I have a question what do fans think of the job I'm doing had to slim the down to look better at the White House uh... so apparently he's he's losing some weight, Rexy
01 Justin: uh... get sexy and for you know he's gonna be on TV he's gonna be doing all these things and I heard he's trying to lose some weight so good for him I think he got to get down to like Jake: two fifty right He got the surgery. He was going to lose weight whether he wants to or not. Justin: Well he wanted to, clearly. He said he wanted to get down to 250 I believe. So that's like he had to have been 350. Jake: I think he was 330. They were showing it on the conference calls all the way. Justin: He's a big big boy. So he's still going to be a big boy. But I like it. Stay healthy Rex. We want you around for a while. Jake: Yeah, I mean, you know, it's kind of weird to get it all up in people's stuff about their weight or whatever, but hey, you know what? I do want them around for a while. I'd love to I So yes, in that way, stay healthy, be well. You know, Eric Manjini slimmed down and he did poorly his next year, so I'm just saying, if we start to lose, I am fucking sending him white Castle burgers. Send him a Crave case. And a Crave case. Alright, I got one more. from Kevin Parker which is it's at mr. Canuck 78 says do you think the Jets will use Leon and David Clowney to move up in this year's draft interesting I don't think Clowney has that much value around a week. I mean, they could maybe like get Clowney to call somebody and like, maybe they could get Clowney for Clowney. Justin: I don't know what he has there. And Leon, didn't they like put the restrictions on him? Like the second rounder type of deal? Jake: So can't people just sign him? if they want to know what they can count this and they can counter sign so basically we have the right to try to trade him yes please still I honestly Justin: don't know how much value he has a guy coming off that broken leg injury I don't think he has the value that that he really is like he's so valuable I don't want them to trade him let's put it that way Jake: I don't think that anybody else is looking at him like a as as trade bait I mean if he's gonna trade for something, I just think it'll be like a throw-in But again, I don't think that I think the team is better with him than without him I don't think his we know his value more than everybody else knows his value So I don't think I think he'll use a bunch of other stuff. I think you'll see some other stuff Justin: You know, I got rumor about Kachri perhaps now now that Holmes is on the team perhaps going to... Jake: Yeah, I think Contry's gotta be looking in the mirror. I'm trying to think of other players that could trade away. You never quite know. It's all about basically what the other team is looking at too. It's also usually not players.
00 Jake: Often times players aren't traded for other players. Justin: like, it just doesn't happen that often, you know? Jake: Players are traded for picks That up Well we had six, we now lost five. Justin: Oh I thought we had one in each round, I thought we had seven. Jake: We had a one, a two, a four, a five, a six, and a seven. Oh no, three. We lost a five. The three was for Braylon Edwards. We're now down to five. I bet you we'll walk out of there with two players, maybe three. Justin: That's what we did last year. Jake: Yeah, and you know what? Two of those players out of the three were starting or were playing in the NFC or the AFC Championship game. That's OK with me. If every year there's two things that I'll have happen every year and be no have no problem with if every year out of the draft you pick two players who play for you in the AFC Championship game. I'll take that and and if every year the Dolphins beat us but we get to the AFC Championship game. Take that as well. So so one last bit of news which I we kind of walked over because it hasn't happened yet is there's big rumors about big Jason Taylor. Coming to the Jets. He was at the Jets camp for three days. We He was at the Jets camp for three days. They're talking about it back and forth. I will tell you that as a Jet Fan, there are other players I dislike. Let's say it Tom Brady. I dislike Tom Brady. I don't dislike him from a personality person. point of view. I dislike him because he's good and he usually beats us. There's other players who I just think, you know, maybe out of the league who I just think, yeah, they're schmucks or whatever. There is only one player who is ever, that I know of, who has ever attacked, not only the Jets team, but the Jets fans. repeatedly year in and year out and actually have, you know, I keep all his quotes and Jason Taylor has gone after the jet fans repeatedly called us dumb, called us we don't know what we're doing, like just again and again, year in and year, almost every year. So, to think that Jason Taylor, could be on our team. I mean I know it's almost one of the things we have, he comes and makes two sacks and we all forgive him. But man, oh man, that would be tough. Because that guy... I don't want him. He is not a friend of Jet Kingdom. Justin: No, I don't even want him. I mean what's the... What do you need a 35 year old... Lineman in a position that he'd have to play linebacker? He wouldn't even be able to play his natural position.
03 Justin: I think they tried that when he went to Washington. It didn't work very well. He had his worst season. I don't even think he fits. I don't like it. I don't like it because I don't like him. I don't like it because I don't like the idea of... It's really more him. I just don't think he fits. I like the idea of getting players that fit. And all the guys we talked about already on this podcast fit. He don't fit. And he's a jerk off. So, mix the two together. And I'll take a jerk off who fits. I'll take a guy who doesn't fit if he's not a jerk-off, but if you're both, I don't like it. Jake: Yeah, and I think it's enough. I think it's enough with the player. Yeah, you don't need Jason Taylor. If you want to use your first round draft pick and go for the player for this position, fine. You want to use your first and second to go for this position. But Jason Taylor at 35 years old, coming off the – you know, I mean looking at his last last couple seasons, He did have some big seasons of getting to get 10, 13 sacks. Justin: He was really one of the best, the league for the last 10 to 15 years. Jake: When he played again when at the Redskins he had 3.5 sacks like rancidity was hurt for after season Justin: He only that's the thing you could get hurt. I mean, it's not not No This would be like, you know, Michael Strahan going and playing for the Eagles in his last year of his career. It... it... it... no. I don't want it. Jake: Well, speaking of things you don't want... What don't you want? I don't know. What do you know? There are things I do want. That's it for our tweets and you know again if you want to follow us we will fix the we apologize for the phone mix up we'll get it back and running in time for the next podcast.
