04 Jake: This is episode 69 of the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Friday, March 12, 2010. Closer to you. Justin: of the women. Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, as always, with absolutely no digital aisle between us. first time in I think our 69th episode. Justin and I are in the same room. So Justin, how you doing? Very well. We wanted to be closer for episode 69 Yeah that Wow. Ooh, wait, let me get um, wait what? So, uh, yeah, this is the first one this should be interesting It's a it's a mid-season fun thing. We actually got into the same room. So if this sounds better You're welcome. And if it sounds worse or you're welcome and you'll never have it again. And if it sounds worse, we'll be back to the other one next time. Let us know either way. We're interested. Yeah, but we will never do this again. So don't worry about it. Oh, maybe. So let's talk about a little bit of agenda. We have plenty of, and we're getting calls, even though we're offline. So let's talk about Free Agency, right? Free Agency started. Our last episode was right before it started. So we've had some things. We had losses. And we'll talk about those we have some gains talk about that and we'll announce our brand new Our brand new calling number in our first call in so we actually awesome new feature Yeah, we have a new calling number which we will talk about and then maybe talk about a little bit of rumors and stuff But let's get going to the losses first. So, you know free agency we talked about it It's a big thing. It started off this time with a bang. We lost some people who basically we knew were guns. So the two only we knew were gonna lose. Let's talk about... Thomas Jones was let go and Lido Shepherd. So off the top of your head, what do you think about those two? So there's been a lot going on with the Thomas Jones thing. I think that's a bigger story. Lido, fine, whatever, goodbye. He was over like $10 million or something. Yeah, not even worth... talking about almost but for the most part the guy I never really understood why he didn't get the chance to start in the playoff game against the Colts He just got benched in the last game which was weird and odd to me But in any event, I don't think that that's that big of a deal the Thomas Jones thing as I mentioned During the last podcast. I don't really think is all that big of a deal. People are making a big deal, you know, you're losing this running back 1,400 yards. Oh my god, how are you going to replace that? You know how with a younger, stronger, faster version
00 Jake: named Sean Green? Stats don't lie. 32 year old running backs don't do very well in the NFL. It's just a fact. The guys carried the ball a ton in his career. I know he didn't... He wasn't like a workhorse very early on and he was a little bit of a fresher 31 year old or 30 year old over the last couple seasons. But we saw this happen with one of the greatest backs of all time, Curtis Martin, did not have a great last season of his career. And I think the Jets were just trying to mitigate that risk of having a guy on the team that they felt obligated to play, like Thomas Jones. And they just let him go. Not a big deal. It was more... To me, his 1,400 yards were more a product of three Pro Bowl offensive linemen and a rookie quarterback. Well, yeah. Interesting you say that because we now... He signed with the Chiefs for, I think, two years for two something million dollars or two million dollars a year. It was like five years over two million... Five? Million over two years right like that which again you never know what's gonna happen next year and whether there's a causes for him to get out Again, I knew he was gone the minute. They've drafted Sean Green. So it's not a big surprise I'm a little bit surprised someone picked him up so quickly But we'll see how he does been front of the Chiefs line which was letting I think Matt Castle getting sacked every five So yeah, but Jamal Charles had a fantastic season as a running back, but he's very very young, so I guess they wanted an older veteran back to show him the way. I don't think he'll be their starter, I think he'll end up being their backup. I just don't think the Jets thought... that they were willing to pay him to be a back-up on the Jets. Not $5 million. You can always draft a running back. It's not receiver. It's not quarterback. You can pick guys in a third round like Sean Green. You can pick guys in a fourth round like Leon Washington. And they can have an impact almost immediately. So to me it wasn that big a deal. But I think there are a lot of people out there that disagree with me. Then the big thing that comes down really was roads, although not a free agency lost a trade. He was traded away to the Arizona Cardinals after they lost roles. They lost somebody who goes to the Giants. is they pick up carry roads for a I think it was a fourth this year and a seventh next year. Right, which had some upside on it. So I think the Jets now have one through seven back again. We had lost a fourth. And you know they're going to trade them. We know Tannenbaum's going to trade two and a one to get a one plus, whatever he can get with it. What do you think about Rhodes going? I mean... I'm fine with it and after the fact it looks even better because he's trashing us and... Yeah. You know, I don't really like to see that but if he wasn't in the right mindset to be on the jets then get him off the jets. I guess he wasn't in the right sign, right mindset to be on the jets as of like last year. Well as soon as he got his money he turned into a different guy. You see him...
01 Jake: in the Caracos commercials and the, you know, you don't want a guy like that on a team that, plus they were, you know, he was feuding with Darryl Reavis. Give me Darryl Reavis over just about anybody, any day. So anyone who's feuding with him got a guy. I didn't hear him. I didn't hear him feuding. Yeah, there's a little ruffling in the in the in the locker room between them and I guess apparently they didn't really like each other and the only time they talked was on the field. So, yeah, goodbye. We take Reavis any day over just about anybody. Yeah, and again, Kerry Rhodes, to me, packed his bag midway through the season. I mean, he was talking, when we were in the playoff hunt, he was talking about how he wasn't going to be on the Jets next year, or whether this was last year. So like, if you're doing that, you're basically, you're opening the door for yourselves, and then, you know, let it hit you on the way out. It's too bad, because he was really one of the better... Jett's over the last like particularly in the man genie regime. He was probably the Jets best defensive player and that just so weird that you bring in a defensive specialist type of coach like Rex Ryan and a guy who built careers like Ed Reeds and obviously Ed Reeds a super talent, but out with something. I from the Cleveland Browns. I call that a big sign. So we pick up a safety. So who's the safety? Pick up a safety. He's got all the qualifications you'd want, you know, 6'2", 210. He's 25, so there's some upside to that. You know, he's 6'ier and as a Brown. He's had some health issues. He's I think he's had four concussions. So you know, it's not like he...and he's lost his starting job a couple of times. Again, I think it's... They must have looked at this like, he's a guy who can be a second. I think they trust in Eric Smith and actually our caller talks about that, so we'll kind of go over that in a bit. It's depth. It's depth and I think that if anything, there's going to be a lot of depth in the defense. It might not be depth in the offense, but there's going to be a lot of depth in the defense. It's interesting that the Browns keep trading with us because we continue to... It looks as if we keep getting the better end of the trades where this isn't really a trade It's it's a free agent signing, but it's interesting that we keep picking guys from the Browns and man
03 Jake: Genie's left his legacy and now we take his players. Yeah Some of them worked out and some of them, you know, we had to see that was huge and then I guess the biggest signing that was a free agent signing, trade, sorry. Just, it was Thursday before the midnight Friday. Was a hard-hitting Antonio Cromartie. It was funny, I saw some comments on Twitter about, can you imagine if it was Rhodes and Cromartie, how many missed hackles there would be in the secondary. So there's a lot of, I mean, there's a lot of talk about it, again. The first thing you have to do is go back to that video, which is hysterical, of the playoffs where Sean Green runs by him and literally like the guy's like, hey, come back here man. He just quit. He definitely quit. So he's got seven kids, the joke around... Six wives. Six baby mamas. And in five different states. It's awesome. So I want his numbers to... It's counting down. I want his numbers to... I want to invent more interceptions than children next year. That's my experience. It's a tough one. He still has a whole off season to go. Eight to eight. Eight different interceptions. But you know, he also played, when he played in 2007 under our coordinator, oh I'm spacing. Come on. Our old defense coordinator. Donny Henderson? No, no. That Teddy. Oh, the guy who was the defensive coordinator under harm. Yeah. And who was the bill's defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl runs? Come on. Ted something or brother? That Teddy. Anyway, they interviewed him. We're spacing. Yeah, We're spacing. It's a Friday. It's late. I need a beer. So. Oh When they talked about him, he said he was really good in the In in in Man coverage and not so good in zone So in 2007 when he had his like breakout year, it was all man coverage In the last few years he's been in his own system So it'll be interesting to see because you just know what we know cuz we've been watching us He's mad. It's man and all Rex wants to do is say you take him you take him Safety you cover the one of the two that I don't trust and everybody else frickin go after the past from Marty Island Is that what you're saying? I think this would be two islands two islands. Yeah, except for one islands we seven kids Wait, there could be a whole bunch of jokes in that one So what do you think eating good pickup? Yeah? I mean look they didn't trade much to get on What was it third round pick fourth round pick something along those something on that with some sort of upside to get a? in all pro young young athletic Tall tall six two yeah, that's a pretty big for and he's got you know He's proved himself that he can be a good fight probe. He made the Pro Bowl. He's an all
00 Jake: And look, he's not the number one. So that's the thing. We have the number one cornerback in the league. And when you put an all-pro on the other side that's not 30-something, things are looking good. He doesn't have to cover the best guy on the team. And really the most important thing is he's ABL, which is anyone but Lido. And so anyone but Lowry, I thought. It works. It does work both ways. Our jokes are better when we're in person. Keep that in mind. Yeah, so I think two good pickups, I mean, still a lot to go and we have a long way to go before the drafts, so there's lots of stuff that can happen. Lots of them. But so far, I feel like we lost a good running back and I think we still have two on the roster. We lost an okay safety. I think we picked up an okay safety. and we lost a bad corner and we picked up a much better corner. So net, net, I still feel above on defense. Maybe we took a dive a little bit on offense, but I feel like that's someplace we're going to hit. Yeah, I think we're going to focus a little bit on offense. And there's still some surprises to come, I'm sure. And there's some rumors. Right about running back, coming into town. It's actually today, it's probably not even a rumor. It already happened. Yeah, so we don't know if he signed or not. It doesn't appear as if we're looking on the Googles right now. But Lydania Tomlinson came into town. And if he's not going to be your feature back. Then he's a good back to have on the team, I imagine. So, okay, so you're the GM right now. Money aside, because really money is an issue this year, you've got Sean Green, you've got maybe Leon Washington. Do you sign with Ian Thomasson? Here's what I wouldn't do. I would not sign him for any more money than Thomas Jones was supposed to have made. Okay, so he's gonna make less than, I think Thomas was owned by five something. You cannot do that because that means... But you'll give him five million like, if it's five point eight that Thomas was owned, you give him five. I'd give him four. So the point is you're saying he's less value than Thomas Jones. And if money is the Jets, because it makes us look more... So if the money is an option, why didn't we just keep Thomas Jones? It makes us look a little stupid to have not signed the guy that has been here the last couple years and ran for 1,400 yards in our system To then go out and get a guy who looks also just shot, right? Yeah, no more tread in the tires But what Tomlinson does have is one thing going for him. He's been one of the best players in the league Wait, the Tomlinson Chapel? He's got the Tom's of treble. This is an Austin Nike commercial that never really came out. No, he wasn't even... He made his own video. Have you seen that? I have seen it. Uh... He was one of the best players in the league for the last, let's just say, five to eight years. Yes. And he hasn't gotten to a Super Bowl, and he hasn't gotten a chance to play in that big stage. And he always seems to be worn down and hurt by the time he gets to the playoffs. Right. Now if he can be... in a three-back system, I think he has tremendous value in a three-back system.
02 Jake: But to do what? To pick up a third and two? Really? Goal line. He scores touchdowns like nobody's business. He's one of the better. I mean, you think he's still a threat, but he's not as he was. He still has, right. He still has like... He has a breakaway speed. But he's still an extremely good football player. I just don't know if he adds the dimension that I want away from Thomas. I mean, to be honest, if we in Washington was 100%, like if we knew, like he had never been hurt and he might be back 100%, but there's still always that doubt. I would say we've got, we just need a Jag, right? Just either, not a Jag, just another player, we need a Jag, just another guy, because those Those two are the... You know, the opposites of each other. You got the fast, you know, breakaway, you can do anything at any time, and you got the pounder who, if you miss a tackle, he's also gone. You got that great combination. But we're worried about both in terms of longevity, and, you know, one could not come back as fast. Well, neither of them has been the number one on a pro roster ever. And both have shown ability to get hurt. Right and one could not come back from his hurt the other one might get hurt again So you can get Tomlinson on the cheap. I think it's a decent enough move I just think it's weird to throw out one old running back who had a better year than the one you're gonna If you're not on the cheap You can't pay him more than or anything close to what you would have had to pay Thomas Jones to stay What do you think it so it his now he's talking about I want to go on the team that goes to books I want to buy only got a couple more years left That's absolutely true. He's looking at the Vikings where he just visited. Now he's coming up to be at the Jets. I like when players are coming to meet us because we might be a team that's going Super Bowl. I'll take that as a good thing. But I will say that, okay, so try to put your Jets fan away. Who do you think has a better chance of making the Super Bowl next year on the Jet Kingdom podcast? I mean, seriously, do you... I have to say, even though I'm trying not to be super biased, super grand green, super whatever, I have to say, man, Vikings, you know, they had a great, great year. They put together some amazing stuff. I'd have to go back and look at their schedule, but I just, my gut feel is it was soft. They were in a division that kind of, They rolled over a couple people that like lions stunk right out bears were not good last season So they got that's four games. They got straight up. They then took the they took the Packers although one of them probably they you know kind of got lucky on just got lucky against the 49ers Farv is gonna come back. He's gonna come back in August. He's training camp so... I don't think I'm the same guy. Yeah, well, how many years can he be the same guy? I don't know. Even if he comes back, I still feel like there's a team that I don't think has a dead-on shot to get there again. I don't know. I think they met up against a soft schedule. I think the Bears will be better next year. I don't think they'll take the Packers twice. Lions will probably still suck. You know, anyway, just an interesting, what do you think?
02 Jake: I mean, give me a... I think we have a better chance. Of course we do. Well, we're both in the championship games. Yep. Right? But we have the number one... They came closer to winning it. We have the number one defense in the league. Had and... And it's getting better. And probably will get better. I like that. I don't see it getting worse. It's just going to keep getting better. Do we have another rumor? summer. We do. There is another, well it's not really a rumor, these guys are coming to visit the Jets. I mean, it's like, are they gonna sign? And Darren Sharper is another safety that is coming to visit. Is he coming to visit or is he talking about the Jets? I don't know if he's talking or coming to visit. I think he's just talking. I think he's just talking. At this point, you know, he's a ball hawk. He's old too. Fine. He's old, but he just won the Super Bowl and he was a big part of their defense. He was. He's the type of safety that is what the Jets need. Leonard can play around the line and make tackles. They need a safety that can cover. And Rhodes wasn't that guy and I don't think Brony Poole is either. I think he's more of a hitter. Sharper would be a real good center field. I'd still go out there and just, you know. I still feel like them picking a pool is us getting a corner in the draft. I really, I just think they're, I think literally Rex Ryan, if he could have 17 corners, he would. And I think he's going to pick another corner in the draft. He might not be the starter, but he'll be coming up pretty quick Because I think his whole defense... I think they're going to pick a corner of safety. Corner? I think picking pool is to say, with Eric Smith and pool, you're saying safety done. All I need is... With Jim Leonard obviously being a starter. So I need those three, I'm okay with safety. I now have two good corners. I need a third. I need a third because I can't... They let Eric Strickland go, I think, right? Donald Strickland, yes. Donald Strickland, sorry. And, uh, Lowry stinks. And Lowry's a good hitter, but... He stinks. But he's not good. He can't cover anybody. No, he can't cover anybody. So, yeah. Alright, well, you know what we have? What do we have? We have an absolutely brand new thing going on with the Jet Kingdom podcast. Which is, we have a call-in number now. We do. You can call at any point, right now, if you're listening to us, you can call. Can't be, because we don't... We don't do this live. No, but I'm saying, well, it's not live. That's why they can call now. Oh, right. So you can stop the podcast, call, and then come back and listen to what we're gonna talk about. Or you can write this number down. 206-600-5631. 206-600-5631. It's a voicemail. And you'll hear my voice and you'll leave a message. and we get it and we'll go through all the best ones. Since we just announced this like a day ago, we have one that's sitting there, we'll leave off the next long one, and we'll answer them. So you can tweet us, you can email us, and now using the power of phone, you can call us. That new technology called telephony. That, the telefono. So let's play our first phone message. And this is from? It's from Matt. He's a long time fan. Yeah, so that's because you just heard his message. Well no, I've known Matt on the Jet Kingdom forums.
03 Jake: Oh yeah, do you think it's the same one? I have to imagine. Matt, let it call us back next week and let us know if you're the one on the forums. Matt, there's probably more than two Matt's to listen to us. Maybe not. It's possible. If there's a Matthew. That's kind of a... Coming in Jake and Justin. This is Matt. I'm a longtime listener to the show and Let me thank you for checking the podcast because it's great. And it's it's always one of the things I look forward to after it just win a couple questions. I want to ask you guys Number one in terms of upgrading this defense. Are you more inclined to go with the secondary? the pass rush or the run defense. Because I know a lot of people have been talking about upgrading the secondary, but as far as I'm concerned, I mean, I think the pass rush and the run defense were both bigger problems for us last year. Number two, yeah, and again, it's kind of about the secondary. I know that... A lot of people have been saying that, you know, we can't go into this season with Eric Smith starting at safety. I'm tempted to agree with that, although I wanted to get your guys' opinion on this. For me personally, when Eric Smith was starting for Kerry Rhodes, I didn't see it as much of a downgrade. I mean, I just didn't see any more... I didn't see a weakness exposed when he was there as compared to Kerry Rhodes. So I think it's almost an addition by subtraction just getting rid of Rhodes. And then finally, one of my major things for this offseason is that I'm of the opinion that we really need to have a third quality running back. And this is because, I mean, for numerous reasons. I mean, number one, We run the ball more than any other team in the league and I think that's going to continue. I hope it does continue. Number two, Green and Leon, they're both great, both in both, but they both have injury concerns now. So it's going to be a big question going into the season. and then, God forbid, you know, if my concern is that if green goes down. I just can't see Leon shouldering the whole load himself. So I really think we need to add a third quality running back to this roster. And I want to get your opinion on that. Okay, thanks guys. See you. Bye. Well, you're welcome. Um, that's good. That actually worked. I hope you guys hear that. We're gonna, I'm gonna go reverse. I'm gonna go three, two, one, because we kind of already talked about three, two, and one will be where we'll end off there. So do we need a third running back? I think we both agree that we do. Yeah, I think we do. Whether it's Tomlinson or whether it's someone that we draft or I don't think it's Danny Woodhead, I don't think that's the answer. Or whether it's some guy that you never heard of that's been on the practice squad for two years. The Giants keep pulling those guys out of their butts. So, you never know. Again, I think running backs... You can just sort of pluck and pull almost anybody, particularly when you have a three
03 Jake: linemen, five linemen like we have, but three pro bowlers. And you're right, we are going to run the ball. That's what we do. But I think we both agree that, yes, we're going to need another one. I don't know the percentage of last year, but... If we had to go pass, run, I don't know if it was 60-40, 65-35. Probably closer to 65-35 or even 75-30. I think it'll definitely come back, right? Second year in the system, better wide receivers or more. What we saw was when Sanchez threw the ball like 20 times, that was a good thing. Like when we beat San Diego, he threw the ball 15 times. And we beat them real, real easily. No, but I'm saying, but I think that, you know, again, that's with a rookie quarterback. He's going to get more throws, and that's good, because we want him to beat the guy. He can go win the game, not just manage the game. So I think we'll run less than we did last year, but still, we're going to run a lot. I mean, it's just his mentality. He's going to have a defense that scores, and he's going to run the ball a lot. And then the second one is Basically, you've already been answered. Is Eric Smith gonna be the only person in, you know, the free safety, as a safety? No, because we just picked up someone today. Was getting rid of Rhodes' addition by subtraction? Yes, but we also added, so it's an addition by addition. All good points, Matt. We definitely think that... Well, we know there'll be more safeties. We signed one and getting rid of roads is sort of like getting rid of a cancer in the locker room. If we don't pick up a corner, we'll pick up a safety. But I do think we're gonna pick up a corner. I think that's first round. I'll miss roads on Twitter though as a jet. Meaning I'll still follow him as a cardinal, but I'll miss having like, you know... Yeah, I'm not gonna miss I'm not gonna miss twittering with with Gary Rhodes. I really I rather carry rose, you know tackled Well now he cannot tackle for the Cardinals We listen and it's funny tweets afterwards Yeah, so we can tweet about is not tackling the finals that charles are a decimated team Yeah, and then I think the last point which is probably will expand upon the most So kind of going, you know, in defense side, you take the number one defense, how do you improve it? Do you improve it with the secondary? Do you improve it with pass rush? Improve it with the run defense? Is all of the above a choice? No, no. Give me, so those are three ways you can, you know. So a quick answer I think is that- Give me top weight, top need from- Pass rush. Pass rush or top need? Yeah, to me, pass rush secondary run defense. Because the run defense is going to be better by adding Chris Jenkins back into the next. We get a pro bowl nose tackle back. We get him back. He only plays like five or six games. And we held the run without him. We put him on IRR until whatever it is, the fifth or sixth week, and then take him off so we can actually play the last. That would be good. Because he always is one down by the end of the season. Let's... Let's put him on IR until the middle of the season. Maybe what happened is some of these other guys got some good experience with him being out and you won't have to play every down. Yeah, that's true. So maybe Pu'a can take some of the load off of him. But I think that's somebody who's going to come back and make a huge impact on the run defense.
02 Jake: So for me, I would focus more on... being able to get to the quarterback when we don't blitz. Because when we didn't blitz, we didn't get to the quarterback. No, we blitzed a lot. We were just, and maybe even then we didn't get to the quarterback that night. Yeah, we just, well... No, we were not a high-sacking team. We didn't sack, but we hurried. And we threw the timing off. That's what the Jets did really well. They throw the timing off to the quarterback. And they would throw anywhere that Rebus wasn't. Right, and that was their strategy on the other side. So by adding, you know, they all sort of meld together by adding a better secondary, the pass rush gets better because guys aren't open and there's nowhere to throw the ball. But I think getting a defensive end who could rush the passer without having to blitz is the number one thing. And the linebacker. In the 3-4 I guess it's either or. And Sean Ellis will be back, so... You know, that's a tough one. Because the edge linebackers, they don't... I mean, they sort of act as defensive ends, but sometimes they rush from one side, sometimes they rush from the other, other times they rush up the middle. Like David Harris probably led the team in sacks, maybe. either him or Ellis. So, but I think just alignment that can get to the quarterback is beneficial. Yeah, no, huge. If I had to rate them as most important, at least important, I'm going to go second as most important. Secondary. Secondary is most important. I think we've already covered that because it was the weakness that we got destroyed in the one game that we... had to win, right? Um, cause we actually got to, to Peyton twice, which for him is actually a lot. Um, then, pass Rush, then run D. I mean, we are gonna get a better, we're gonna get a better run D just by having that big fat guy in the middle. I don't think the Rush defense was actually all that bad. It wasn't. Because when you looked at it, it just couldn't grow against us. It was just a few games that pe- that things broke down and then we get these like 40 yard runs and I guess those things just happen. I mean again, but there were those two games again, Jacksonville was that game. That was bad. Miami. Miami. The wildcat beat us up pretty good. So those types of things are like, you know, again, I think right now if we were at 100 last year, I think we're a little bit over 100 right now. I think we got better. on defense, I think offense probably took a hit back until we replaced Jones. Like, but if you think if you could get Chris Jenkins and Lee Washington back as two pro bowl players that we lost off our team, you basically picked up and freed and saved two more pro bowl players that we didn't have in the playoffs. Would those two team players, if played against the Colts, have won that game? And you'd have to say maybe. Maybe. Well, Sean Green going out and then having Lee and Washington come in. Well, that's why I don't think it's that big of a deal that we lost Thomas Jones.
00 Jake: Because as soon as you saw Green on the sideline, you knew he wasn't coming back. It was an oh shit moment. Yeah. Because it wasn't like, oh, we're okay. We have Thomas Jones. It was like, oh shit. There goes our running game. Well, it goes... There goes our... Not only that, but I think the other two games where Sean Green was the one who busted out twice in two games both Cincinnati and against And again, San Diego. He was the one who had the huge run for the touchdown, right? Those seven points or 14 points over two games were the game changers right in two games So he didn't do it against the Colts But if he had that might have been the game changer instead 11 point lead if we had maybe a 17 point lead or 18 point lead. Anyway, well that's it for this Friday. It's actually a late podcast for us. Hope to get this out Friday. We'll see if I can pull that together tonight. Thanks for listening.
