03 Jake: This is episode 74 of the Jet Kingdom Podcasts for Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Sell the medal. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom Podcast. As always, joining you in this warm June semi-special day is Jake and across the Digital Isle. freshly back from the metal... no we didn't go today Justin: I didn't go. Uh, is Justin. How you doing Justin? I'm doing alright. I guess you're freshly back from the new metal lands from the practice today for for the Jets. Did the Giants do it yesterday? Yes they did! And we did it today. All right, well, I guess they win in that respect. But one of our starting receivers isn't out for the year. So that's a good thing. Jake: Who's their starting receiver out for the year? Justin: Oh, Dominic Kixen tore his ACL during the practice. Jake: Oh, man, don't wish bad on another team. Justin: I didn't wish bad on them. I'm just saying that the field had its first casualty. Oh, wow. And it wasn't a good visit to Jett. Jake: Yeah, so you know it's been a while. It's it's a actually been almost three weeks since our last podcast Justin: It is the slowness of the season although now the sports NFL is 24 7 and the Jets are clearly in the news. We got a lot to cover today Or a little to cover Things we're going to talk about, talk about the practice today, talk about the stadium and PSLs and potential sponsors, talk about a sporting news prediction that's kind of fun and then maybe talk about a little bit about holdouts, lockouts in 2011 so there's a lot to go on with that. Let's get started with today's practice. I'll let you talk... No, you can't talk about it. The Jets held a practice today, opened to the fans for free. I went with a VIP. We didn't get a VIP treatment. Jake: You could purchase the tickets for free online using Ticketmaster, which is kind of cool. like you. Justin: But you went through the process of purchasing them all the way through to printing them out and you had to bring them, a guy as we were walking to the stadium, a guy was like, tickets, tickets for sale. And I was like, oh yeah, it's right here. Yeah, right, sure. Got an extra ticket. So, I mean, I will say that watching the practice, cool.
01 Justin: I'm not going to really talk about the practice because there's a lot of stuff up on it. I'll just more talk about the stadium and my experience. Did you even hear anything? Was there mics around? No, no, no, no. This was... So this is... You know, the giant city yesterday, they said they had 10,000 people show up. Jets today, they had 12,000, so win one for the Jets. We win. And this is... And... It was an open stadium looking for, you know, you could walk anywhere, you could sit anywhere and I actually had the chance to walk and sit in all the different sections. I basically tore it and went around the entire stadium from top to bottom. Jake: Did you sit in your seats? I sat in my seats. I sit in the seats directly opposite for me. I sat in the last row of the uppers just to see what it looked like. Took a ton of pictures which I swear to put up on Jet Kingdom in the next couple of days. Thank you for watching. Please subscribe and share. Justin: And here's my impressions. Oh, and I had a pretzel. How was that? It was good. How were the bathrooms? The bathrooms were nice. Jake: I only went to the bathroom in the club area because we toured the club area. Stall or urinal? Uhh, urinal. Justin: Didn't drop a deuce in the new stadium yet. But you could have peed in it. I was just wondering. We'll be right back. Oh, yeah, I guess. Was it a urinal or was it a trough? Jake: Urinal with protected sides. I like that. I like that. Justin: No dick gandering. Was there a shelf for the beer? Because they had that in the old stadium. Remember, you could bring your beer to the bathroom and put it on the shelf. I didn't notice because I didn't have a beer in my hand. These are the questions that the fans need to know. It was those type... Well, again, this is the club section. So I don't think the club section... You don't know if it's going to be a little bit different, but it was those... So what you're saying is there were 42 inch flat panels on the walls in those bathrooms. Jake: No. Justin: Okay, so a couple things. I mean, you know, everybody's been listening to podcasts, hey, how you doing? Jake: You know that I'm a big fan and that I've bought into the stadium and I've paid my money and so in some ways I'm completely biased because what the hell? I mean, you know, I've already kind of bought in so it's like, you know, it's like I buy a car and you ask me how I like the car, well I just bought it so of course I'm going Justin: to say I like it. Thank you. Having said that, I think there's some things that they did really, really well. And there's some things that they did pretty poorly in the songs that they just did crappy. So I think going from the entrance in, parking, great. Big open space there. Jake: Actually tearing down the last piece of the old stadium, like one wall, like one three Justin: story wall, still up. And it was very odd. Was that sad for you? It was. I know that's weird, but I looked over it and it's kind of, well, any building like that's kind of half down looks sad, you know, it doesn't look like a happy building that's being torn down. I mean, I could tell you as everyone who listens to this show knows, I'm a Yankee fan as well. And the Yankee Stadium has been, you know.
01 Justin: being torn down this season and I take the train there, the subway there every time I go to the stadium and slowly but surely that stadium has been ripped down and I swear I had a little tear the first time I saw it like half torn. It was very sad. It's very sad to see a stadium come down. Jake: Yeah, it is. I mean, it's Justin: Hey, whatever. That was fun. So the parking, I think is great. The entrances, I think will be better. I think that the traffic flow will be better. They studied it. Jake: The, you know, they were doing the ticket stuff. So I don't know how that's going to be. It was, you know, 12,000 people not 80,000 people I was reminded how close the train station is to the stadium I mean you literally as you get out the train station if it were raining you could run and Justin: Make it in but yeah, we saw the train station when we went to visit the stadium Didn't we yeah, but it's literally right there again. I was just surprised by it again And then, so that was good. Then we went up into, we went into the great hall. We didn't go into the section I would normally go into. We went to the great hall and wandered around and they had people selling the PSLs and the seats, of course, which is, you know, I heard on the radio today that the Giants have only 1500 club seats left. My guess is that the Jets have a lot more. For more information, visit www.fema.org We could talk about reducing the PSL in a bit. So I basically walked row, I went out, looked down there and then I went up to the mezzanine and walked the mezzanine. Then went into the club seats, the club area. And again, there's a lot to like. I think the sight lines are great. I was about to say, the old stadium... The best thing about it was there was not a bad seat in the house. Could you tell where their obstructed views, where their seats that you could tell weren't going to be great for watching the actual game? Jake: I think I found a couple, but I was kind of looking for them. I mean, I did literally go all the way around the Nezne and halfway around the top and, you know. you I went to the tippy tippy top, so the last row, and I sat there and I thought, okay, this is still a good seat, like you can still, and it was in the end zone, you can still see it, you can still look at the, you know, players, it's not like, you know, it's bad. I went down to the, sort of the end of the end, the end of the top level and look from there and... Justin: That was actually a pretty good seat and you can see the the scoreboards from everywhere really clearly scoreboards Jake: I mean, that's sort of the okay, so the stuff they did really well, obviously the screens I mean, that's four corners around four corners. They're huge and today they had them showing different stuff I don't know what they're gonna do on game day But that was kind of cool like on one they were showing one thing because basically from any angle no matter where you sit You can see two seats or two of them. In fact, in some places you can see all four, but so in actually, I would say you don't really need all four of them playing the same thing. You need two of them playing the same thing because you want to watch those two. But anyway, so they had one playing
03 Jake: kind of replays and one sort of like a welcome Jets fans. So I think the scoreboard, the branding, I looked at the LED lights, when they light up that thing is green. The outdoors, they have huge LED screens on the outdoors that are kind of as you come in that they will be having pictures of stuff going on. I think the experience is going to be great. The concourses are huge. They feel modern and open. It was weird. to take a picture of the concourse in the top. It was empty. There was no one up there. Literally no one. And I said to the person I was with, I said, you'll never see this like this, right? Literally, it looked like Zombieland, like no one was there. Justin: That was cool. So those are the things they've done well. I think the seats are great. I think the sight lines are great. It's clear that the top level is higher and farther away because I kind of went up to where... Thank you. I went to where I thought my old seats were and they were much, you know, in terms of space and, you know, fathers and they weren't the same row length. So it's definitely the top, top seats are farther than the old top, top seats. But again, I think it's a great sight line all the way around. It's a great bowl. I heard people when I was down in the mezzanine. Like 500 fans must have done the chant and it sounded loud and I was like and they were down in the lower bowl And I was like well if 500 fans can make this sound loud I can't wait to see what eight, you know 80,000 make this feel like so I'm excited for the way This is gonna be very loud. It was wind coming in from all different directions Jake: Which I think is probably an advantage to the team because team that's the home place home to it can get used to it The team that isn't can't Justin: Um, so those are the things I thought, I thought the concession stands, the bathrooms, all that stuff. Was all the concessions, I imagine not all of them were open. Jake: Not all of them, but some of them were. Justin: Like, were there any specialty ones? Like, things not burger. Well, it's not Yankee Stadium, if that's what you're asking. Well, no, that's not quite what I'm asking. Are there any, like, things that aren't, like... hot dogs and sausages. Is there a- Yeah, there was pizzas and burgers and I guess, uh, I'll try and think of this. I mean, there seems like a couple that I thought, oh, they'd be selling some interesting things like fry, like specialty fries and things. I get, I hope that they go a little bit upscale, Jake: but I hope they don't go to like sushi. Now, a friend of ours, a friend of both of ours was in there for this. concert said during the Eagles concert said during the Eagles concert they were selling sushi and this that I don't think they're gonna sell that during the games and to be honest I don't want that like just just have good food and have lots of it and make it semi-reason priced and I'll be happy. Justin: Did they seem like they were gonna have a decent selection of adult beverages? Again, that wasn't really tell was there you know a lot of these stadiums have like restaurants and bars kind of built into them
07 Justin: Because when we went on the tour I didn't notice anything Like that I mean obviously there's the club seats and there's the coaches seats down on the field I imagine they have some pretty cool stuff down there But like, you know some some of these newer stadiums are popping up and they have bars that have views into the stadium, that kind of thing. Jake: Yeah, I didn't see a lot of that and actually as you point that out it makes me kind of think about one of the things I liked about it. And it's that I think that the stadium, and I'll give credit to where credit's due because I'm about to slam for a lot of stuff. This stadium is about watching the game. Yeah, they're going to sell. Justin: That's what football stadiums are really about. They should be. It's not like a baseball game where it's like, oh, I'll take a couple innings and wander around. Right, right. And go have Shake Shack or go have Burger Heaven or go have whatever. This is, I mean, I think it's trending where the Metal Jake: Lands was, or the Giants Stadium was really 100% about the game because there's really nowhere else to go and nothing else to do. Justin: This game this is a little bit more because there's more there was like a kid zone down in the open lot like where the kids Could play things and and and the concourse is much more open so I can see people like them I like that when you're walking the concourse. Did you notice can you see the field is it open air like that or no? Jake: I'm you're still behind the thing. There are a lot more screens. There's a lot more you know plasma screens showing the game so like that's unlike in the giant Justin: state if you were out there you kind of were lost you didn't know what was going on right and and there's much more that you know it done well i mean Jake: could you do more sure how about getting how about getting up Justin: and down from Like escalators, exit strategies. Jake: On the way in I took the massive, I went to the great entrance I guess, the 50 yard line entrance and then I went up the escalators and then I went up a bunch of stairs which would never be the way I go because it's pain in the ass. But on the way back down from my section I went down, one set of escalators went around and went down another set of escalators. So. Like on the going down I was like, oh, this is much better. This is the way I would go out from the mezzanine It's like it's escalator escalator. You're out So that was good again, it'll be hard it's hard to tell with four people versus 80 000 There seems like they have you know, a lot of escalators and a lot of stairs so people can do both Which is good again that was good about the giant stadium if you felt like the escalators were going slow You'd go over there and take the you know roundabout Justin: You know what I you know what I particularly I Love about the new Yankee Stadium and it's only really relevant to talk about new stadiums because it's a new stadium Otherwise you generally tell me to shut up about the Yankees on this podcast But yeah pretty built they built these elevators these like freight elevators to get people up and down and they could fit like
05 Justin: I don't know 25 to 40 people in each of these elevators and you could take them all the way up and all the way down and I just love that about that stadium because you just you literally can get from the upper deck to out the door and about I don't know, a minute and a half. It's like, great. I wonder if this stadium is complete in that respect or if they're not. Jake: I think I did see elevators. Justin: These are like specific, like big freight elevators. I didn't see those. I will say actually once you're inside and maybe it's just me. for the first time walking inside trying to get to my seats I was kinda like where do I go there were definitely sections where I saw there's gonna be a pro shop and there's gonna be a you know but again I think that's good I mean Jake: I want people to come in and do other things but I at the end of the day I want people to watch the game so that's all the positive stuff Justin: positive, positive, positive So what are the top three negative things? Jake: Top three negative things, yeah, because we'll round out that. One is this extra seat row that they've kind of thrown into places. That as you saw and we witnessed and we have pictures of, that just sucks balls. Justin: Do you think they did that for the Super Bowl? Jake: No, because they didn't want the Super Bowl. Justin: But in order to win the Super Bowl, to say, oh, we have this many more thousand seats or hundred seats. Jake: I don't think so. I don't think they put in thousands more seats. I think they put in like a hundred, hundred and fifty. I don't think they put in enough to make it worth their while. Justin: I don't know. Part of me thinks it might be an architectural decision like Jake: The places they were going to put these things weren't big enough to be pathways and you have to have a pathway that's five feet wide and if it's not five feet then you have to kind of threw those in. Part of me thinks that it's probably money, more seats, more butts, more tickets. Justin: Yeah, more tickets they can't sell. Jake: Yeah, so I don't know. That was a negative. live. I think the I think the club section, while this big interior kind of like it's called a lounge, first of all, looks really dated already. I mean, really? That's kind of. Yeah, it just looks like I don't know. It just kind of looks like designed like someone who just said, what would you do in a lounge? OK, let's do this. It gets finished. Yeah, no, it's totally finished. Like are there couches and... Yes, couches and little tables and little round tables. Well, that's kind of how sweets are, aren't they? Yeah, but it's not a sweet. It's kind of like a big party zone. And it just doesn't look practical for the amount of people that are going to be in there. There's lots of places to sit. What else was in the club? Were there bars in the club? Yep, bars, restaurants, big seating areas. So then my other second negative was that there's these two massive walls in the, so it's kind of like this big, you could look out, Justin: I guess on the Jersey, big skylight, whatever, and then these two massive walls that go up the side.
01 Justin: And then on the bottom of those walls, they had like three TVs. We can play games, other games, whatever. Great, I like that. Then the top, this is a massive area, I don't know, 20 by 30 area, they had two 50 inch plasmas and they just looked lost because it's this huge, huge area. And I thought, why not just throw a high def projector and put One on either side and do like a really big display of the game Why are you putting two little 50 inches that you can't even see because they're so high up like it made no sense So that was kind of a negative and Then bad negatives so far. No, they're well. No, they're not In the club seats were really nice. I went and sat at the 50-yard line four yards rose four rows up mezzanine Jake: 50 yard club zone is like probably the best seat in the house. It's great. See why don't I tell you? I mean it's three hundred ninety five dollars a ticket. Did they let you in the coach zone? Justin: They might have I didn't try okay I didn't try. I looked down on it. So there was those and then I don't know what the last negative and it's the club seat stuff. Jake: It seemed I guess overall there seemed like some of the design decisions didn't seem well thought out. There's a little You'd go up and then downstairs. You'd go over stairs. You'd go in these stairs. There's just these little quirks. There's a place by my section where you come down this one little section and then there's like this gap. Let's call it a one foot gap between the back of the seat on the row in front of me and like… and where the railing is from the row to walk down, but then the rope extends on the other side. So it kind of looks like you could go through there, but then as you would go through it, you'd bump the guy in front of you, you'd bump his head, but it just looks like the kind of thing that's going to happen 50 times a game. So that guy sitting in that seat is going to get his head bumped as someone tries to squeeze through that little area. It like, there's just lots of stuff that I feel like the people who built it. don't go to games, you know? They don't, they go to like the perfect game, but they don't go to the real game, which is drunk people and rude people and people dressed in huge bulky outfits and fat people and like, you know, hey, stop calling me fat. Just fans, you know, I guess I'll just put in the fan category, they're just fans. They're not, you know, and so it... Yes, if you're a normal person at the opera, you'd look at that little gap and you'd go, oh, I should not go through that gap because it does not look like it's supposed to be gone through. But then you're a Jets fan or a Giants fan of the game, you're like, hey, let's go through there. You know, it's just, I don't know. And I'm not putting down us because it is us, but it just, there's just little design Justin: decisions that, there was seats that like, they had these big glass walls in front of them. But then you'd sit there and you couldn't see through the glass.
01 Justin: You kind of had to sit like we sat in all these different tried to see. It's trying to say like, oh, is this a good seat? Is about the width of the seat when you were sitting next to the person? I mean, the ones in the club seats were awesome and padded. The ones I was sitting in were fine. I mean, cut holders. Great. You know, I think all that again, seemed like they like you'll have to. Like was there a good distance between you and the seat in front of you to the point where you're gonna have to not get Jake: Up to let someone past you. No, I think it's I think it's average I think it's I I do not think there's any stadium built in the last, you know Five years that's not like a that's that's a that's a architectural thing. Like it has to be 7.8 inches or whatever it is. That's what has to be and that's what they do. I Justin: Don't feel like the movie theaters where you can sort of no no no no no no cuz they get a pack the seats in because Jake: If they did that that means the guy in the twelfth row would be that much farther away So there's a pro in the con all right sounds like a fun stadium Justin: I think it's going to be a great stadium. And I think once we're in it and we're playing in it and there's no giant sign hanging out, Jake: I will say that the four end, the corner zones, they basically call it the corner stones and each corner is sponsored. So there's Pepsi, MetLife, Verizon and Budweiser, Bud Light, I guess maybe it's Budweiser, Bud Light. That's very cool, I like that concept. Justin: Were there a lot of other signs? No, no, it's literally just that. That's good exposure. Jake: Yeah, and they're above the big boards and they're on the outside in those corners. Justin: I kind of like it because it does it kind of gives them You don't feel like you're in an advertising overload. Yeah, Jiaxin Stadium was packed with little signs in there. Yeah, Toyota and this and that. Who knows? No Hess, though? No Hess sign? I didn't see. That's a little disappointing. They're not close to doing it. So I like that. So let's talk a little bit about the PSL. Well, how about before we go to the PSL? Just take two seconds. What did the practice look like? Like how did the players look? Was Rebus playing? Could you tell anything? Were you not watching? I sat and watched him for a little bit. How did they look? Jake: They looked okay! But again it's practice! Justin: Like I've been to- Practice man! It's practice! Come on man it's practice. Yeah I don't know. They're meant to look good in practice. Did Rebus play? Did Rebus play? See out there for the time that I was watching I was watching the offense I wasn't watching the defense I was watching Sanchez throw the ball to some players who I didn't even know there You know somebody was like, oh, I know their their number but some I was like, I don't know their number Jake: It was okay. I mean again, I think you huh Justin: I think Santoni was out there. Was LT out there? Jake: Didn't see LT. I don't know, what number was he now?
00 Justin: He's still 21 I imagine? Yeah, I don't know. I didn't see... I don't know if Dwight Lowry's giving up his number. Wasn't Lowry 20? I think he did, yeah. To LT. I didn't see Jason Taylor. Although I heard he got a big warm welcome. Was Jenkins out there? Jenkins was out there, he got a huge round of applause, people were really excited to see him. Alright, that's cool, that's all I wanted to know, we're the players out there. Jake: Yeah, I mean you've gone to practice before. Justin: I have, I've been to training camps. Jake: Yeah, it's in some ways it's so organized that you're like, it's just hard to really and they cut some of them in half. or yeah, some of them half. Not the ticket prices but the PSLs and they're going to give the money, anybody who bought in those PSLs will get that money back. Justin: So you're getting your money back? Jake: No, I'm not in, I'm actually one of the sections that's not been cut down. Justin: You know, part of me thinks damn, I wish I was but then part of me thinks nah, you know, what that means about those sections is that they've sold well which means that they're valuable. Right, it's kind of like but Good that they're refunding people. I like that good good on good on you And and this is what I was saying to my special guest as we were walking around today was Jake: And you know, I some people don't like this analogy and please write in and tell me how much you don't like this analogy But in some ways that the old stadium was under rent control and that the ticket prices weren't representing the cost of tickets to see sporting events in New York City. TheyB were representing an old, you know, they just hadn't come up. So they were under rent control. They had not been brought up to modern times. And if you went to any stadium, including the Colt Stadium and places that you can buy a house for $14,000 four feet away from the stadium literally Their prices Their prices are there they're at the price of what sporting events and particular NFL games are which really are hundreds of dollars You know hundred hundred twenty hundred fifty three hundred and the New York Jets in the year Justin: this because of the stadium and because it wasn't their ownership and because the Jets were kind of They didn't own the stadium and it was all a leasey thing and owned by the Meadowlands. Jake: You know, it wasn't really their control. And I also don't think that they got the lion's share of it so they didn't have any big thing about raising it. It's been taken off now, right? The Band-Aid's off and these prices now are market rate prices. They've been set by the company, the companies, Jets and Giants.
01 Jake: and they will go with the market. If nobody buys them, they'll come down. If people buy them and then their demand goes up, they will go up. It's like movie tickets. The movie ticket demand goes up and up, so people keep raising the prices. If they raise the price too high, if it's $30 a movie ticket and no one goes, they'll lower them. It's market demand. end. What's interesting is that these tickets are now at market demand and thus the PSL cuts. They lowered the club seat prices before, that was the first lowering. Now they've lowered the PSL prices on some of these because the market has demanded that they be lowered. It's not enough market for them, you've got to lower them. In some ways, I'm okay with that. Justin: That proves that, A, there's a part of a market, but part that is being market driven. I'm okay. I think that's fine. interesting news. So overall stadium good. One other piece of funny news, I think a week Jake: ago, was that the Jetson Giants turned down a popular online adultery site. Yes, I said Justin: And I happen to know the name because they're big sponsors of the Howard Stern Show in a podcast? No, not sponsored by Madison. Not sponsored by Madison.com. But if you do want to cheat on your husband, go to ashlamasson.com. And they will help and they will help and So to speak. Exerical. So I only know them because they're big sponsors of Howard Stern and they sponsored the Tiger Woods Mistress, Beauty contest, which is a genius promotion by them, obviously, to tie that whole thing before. And they apparently have tried this before. They tried to put a... So this is all sort of speculation and rumor in the Giants, nor the Jets, or... The New Meadowland Stadium Corporation will comment on the on the alleged offer. But they allegedly offered 25 million dollars for the name rights to the stadium. Decent change would consider it's not not right now. I doubt they I I bet you they a I bet you they did it as a. promotion thing., that's what, that's what most people are saying that that they never... hen they didn't offer it for... if they'd offer them 25 million dollars for 30 years, they might, they might have considered it. Like, you know... Well the thing is, most... If they offered 25 million dollars for one year. Right. Most stadiums are, you know, at 20 to 25 million dollars per year. We'll be right back here. with a contract locked in for 20 to 30 years, they were supposedly offering just $25 million
06 Justin: perhaps for the first year. I don't know the entire... Obviously, this is still just alleged. But yes, it was likely just for... Knowing that they were going to say no, it was likely just for publicity stunt, if you will. But similarly, this past season, this past year, they had done a Super Bowl ad that had a tagline that said something along the lines of, you doing after the game?" And it was actually rejected by the NFL. Even though they were willing to pay for the ad, it was rejected. Some of their taglines are, uh, the premier discrete dating service. And the motto is, life is short, have it short, have it short, have it short, have it short. So an interesting, interesting that they're looking to sponsor our stadium, our our Meadowlands stadium, which will continue to, you know, I almost wanted to get a, I don't, I'm never a big fan of like the sponsored name stadium. because I feel like it loses some feel. Like, I don't know the name of the stadium that most teams play in because it's the sponsor name. Like, I could not tell you the name of the Ravens Stadium because it's... It's some company bank. Midwell Bank. Yeah, great. Some bank. Jake: Yeah, but some of them you can, like... Justin: Some I can because we play them often. Jake: Lucas oil Gillette Stadium Yeah Dolphins change all the time. So it was pro player then it was dolphins then it was Something beer. Yeah, but you go you go there every year So I mean, I think that's the thing if you go to a stadium once then you kind of I feel like I feel like I Justin: Like I like Yankee Stadium, you know, I like that better than than a sponsor name but I Really kind of want this stadium to get a name and not be the new Meadowlands because I feel like until it gets a name and That's not the new Meadowlands people are gonna refer to it as new giant stadium Jake: I you know what the thing is I've heard very few people refer to it new giant stadium Justin: I agree that it will get a name and once and I just hope that it's a name that doesn't Like, Lucas Oil Stadium, yes, it's Lucas Oil, but you can take a name and as long as you use it and use it well and it becomes the place everybody thinks about, it almost loses It loses the sponsorship, which I guess sponsors shouldn't want to hear. But it becomes part of the vernacular.
00 Jake: I guess I'll call it like Kleenex. Kleenex is both a brand and is a thing. You don't ask for Kleenex, or Q-tip, or Xerox, or FedEx. Well, FedEx is probably losing that. Or Google it, although Google, you want to Google it. So there's some things that kind of use their brand appeal. Yeah, you should Google it. Seriously, why don't you just Google it? I'm not going to Google it. What you should do, those names lose their appeal and then they turn into the name of the stadium. I think in some ways it doesn't matter what the name is. As long as it's something that's just not dumb. I don't care if it's... You know. All right. Let me bring up an example. Nike Stadium. Justin: I really liked Mile High Stadium, but I don't believe it's called that anymore. Like where Denver play. Isn't it like the something at Mile High or like... I could not tell you where the Broncos play. If I were a sponsor, and I'm not. Jake: Because one day in the podcast one day makes a hundred million dollars a year. It does not make 125 sponsor the world a Couple things I'd want to get in there fast because you're right if you don't get the name set then the name doesn't get set And it gets like wavy You have a time now before people really start going there. In other words, here's the thing. Justin: If I was a sponsor, if all you sponsors are out there, before you sponsor, by the way, you can sponsor. Advertising at JetKingdom.com. Jake: Thank you. You can sponsor the Jet Kingdom broadcast for one one millionth that you can sponsor at New Metalhead Stadium. Justin: That's like a quarter. Jake: Yeah. Justin: Something like that. And, well, per plot, I don't know. So, but I would get in there fast. Get there before preseason and before people start making a stink about that stadium because Jake: that opening weekend when they have two games there where it's Monday night and they talk about the new stadium and new stadium, new stadium, they're going to put so much time and effort into it. If you don't have your name on there, you are missing out. You are a dumbass. Justin: And now there's the 2014 Super Bowl to look towards as a leverage point for the people who are selling the rights. But you've got to look at that and say, wow, in three or four years, the world is going to be watching. And there's going to be a two week lead up to this event that's going to be taking place at the stadium. Yes, and all the ads and all the, you know, oh, it's just, I just, I don't know. Jake: I would, if I were a person, I'd want to, if I were the person who was buying in, if you know you're going to buy in or even get in before the season starts, get your name on there because is. in that two day span you're going to get more coverage even more than normal because they'll
00 Jake: be talking about it. Look at the new stadium, oh it's just beautiful and if you can get your name in there every time they say that you'll have paid for your first year in those two days. Justin: I know that's kind of weird to say but I feel like that's the truth. Alright let's move on. Moving on. Moving right along. Jake: We got two other pieces of news that kind of happened since we've been out of... I don't like either of these two pieces of news. Okay, well then let's talk about them both and I know you. Justin: So one is the sporting news making its earliest early early prediction predicts the New York Jets to win the Super Bowl over cowboys. I don't like it. In the Cowboys Stadium, well there, you just think that that's never going to happen because that'll never happen. The Cowboys aren't making the Super Bowl with that quarterback. Well, secondly, they're also not going to make the Super Bowl in the Cowboys Stadium because that's never happening. Jerry World. Jerry World. And I don't like being the one that people are gunning at. I like to be sort of the underdog. Jake: Everyone yeah, that's not going to happen this year Justin: we are the best team on paper i think in the whole week Jake: everybody is looking after I American Marty, you went to the AFC Championship, you don't get there again, it's whatever. Justin: I say, you know, I first break it down, I said there's always, there's three seasons and every year, preseason, regular season, postseason. Your job is to get to preseason without injury, get to the postseason and get to the playoffs and then win every game in the playoffs. That's it. Jake: So I'm not going to focus on the AFC Championship because we got to focus on those other two seasons because they come before them. That being one. Two is, when I'm looking at this season, I don't look at a season, and we are not going to make our predictions, but it's sort of going to show where mine's going. I don't look at this season and look at it as an AFC championship last season, Justin: and we have to get to that. I look at the regular season, and I say, we won nine games. That's not a lot of games. That's one game above 500. And generally, if you're off a 14 win season, 13 win, 12 win season, 11 win season, you know, then people are thinking, oh, you better get to 12, you better get to 13, you better get to, you know, you better not drop. Jake: Well, if the Jets were to win one more game, that would be 10 wins. I don't think even with all the hype and this and that and all the shit, 10 games? I think we could win 10 games. That's even with splitting with our opponents. That's with all this stuff. So to me, I'm not looking at this as a huge let down season because the regular season if we don't win 14 games, we're not going to win 14 games.
00 Jake: We're not going to win 15, 16. Definitely not. We will go down. We can win 10 games, 11 games. This isn't insurmountable. To me, I look at it, the expectations are high, but the season we had before was a nine-win season. It's not like the Colts who always win 10 in a row to start the season. It's a team that won nine. And three of them were ones that were like those fluke, you know, he threw three, you know, were winnable, meaning we weren't getting blown out. I mean, what do you think? No predictions, but like, what do you think about the expectation that's happening right now? The expectations are too high, I think. I mean, Justin: again, if you look at the team on paper, they're probably the best team in the league with all the players and what they had last year, the momentum. the second year quarterback, the talent that they added on both sides of the ball, they certainly look like they could be the Super Bowl winners. But I think you're right, the way to look at it is let's win our division maybe and go into the playoffs with home game. Yeah, a home game. You know, maybe you have a bye or something along those lines. The Super Bowl is obviously the goal, but... I think you take it in chunks and the best way to look at it is sort of one week at a time. So we'll see how it pans out. I don't like being picked to win the Super Bowl by anybody. It's flattering, thank you. But I think it sets these lofty expectations and sets you up for a letdown and even puts a lot of pressure on you if you start the season 1 and 2. You know what I mean? Like there's just this added pressure. So that's just my take on the prediction. It means absolutely nothing. It's June. The season, the preseason doesn't even start for another two months. So whatever it is, what it is. Cowboys bunk, though. There's no way the Cowboys should. be in that prediction. There's a long way to go to that where we get to our prediction. And why wouldn't you put the Saints up there? I mean, they didn't really lose too much. Yeah, Jake: I think it's... Yeah, I don't like expectations, yet have never done well with high expectations. So let's do everything we can to lower them. Last year, the expectation was the lowest they could possibly be, and we've done the best we did in 10 years. So... Let's, let's do that. Justin: Alright, so let's talk about two things. First is sort of holdouts. So we've got two players who are, who want to be shown the money. Jake: And I want to get your take on those. Show it to them. Let's show them. you Justin: Okay, but let's just say you can't show the money to everybody because really well there's only one there's one guy his name is Dorell Rebus and he wants to be the highest. What do you think about him fainting injury as a way to protest?
05 Justin: I think he's gonna do what he's gonna do. I don't like it But okay, it's you know I don't know if he's doing it on his own or if his agent saying do this or What he's doing there. I don't really like it from a team perspective, but from a Dorell Reavis perspective. I get it the lifespan of a football player is kind of short, you should make the most out of it while you can your contracts aren't guaranteed, which is kind of bullshit from a player perspective and he is quite literally the best at his position in the entire league, might be the best defensive player in the entire league and he deserves to be paid. The way that his peers are paid and there are players out there that play his same position that get paid 15 times the amount that he gets paid so What do you think about him being three years into a six-year contract? Well, that's why is that's where we are now that doesn't really matter Yeah, it doesn't matter because the team can throw it out at any time. So the player should be able to do the same thing You know what I mean? If you're gonna look at it, it's like why should the man be able to cut me whenever they feel like cutting me? I've got guaranteed money, so it's just that in the contract that... Also, no one forces you to sign it. No one forces you to sign it. What if he blows out his knee, and then that's it? Guarantees are guarantees. You can blow your knee, you should get your money. No, but he... The point is that the guaranteed money is usually in the bonuses and what he's saying is I'm getting paid a million dollars a year and this guy's getting paid fifteen million dollars a year, I should be getting paid that money because I'm better than him. Yeah, I'm with you actually. Jake: I think that you're right. I think if you talk about, you know, we've been talking a lot about culture and corporate culture and One of the things I was looking over was the Netflix that put out this thing about their corporate culture. I'm getting to where this is relevant. Basically they say, we pay people your market rate. That's good because it takes away the discussion of whether you're getting paid enough because we're always paying the people who work for our company the market rate of what their job is for. That's all I have for you guys. If you enjoyed this video, please subscribe to our channel. Thank you so much for watching. It should never be an issue because you're paying your market rate. It also could mean that if you're a COBOL programmer, you might go down because your market rate is going down or there's been a flood of COBOL programmers or no one cares about it anymore. So, in this case, I think that Levis is right and that the market rate for the best cornerback in the league is X. And if he's the best cornerback and we all can say yes he is, I don't think anybody disagrees, maybe one or two people, he might be top three. Okay, fine, top three cornerbacks in the league, then he should be paid that, I agree. I don't like doing the feigning and the whatever. I think that the whole thing with the social media,
02 Jake: these things should be kept off the field. called. If you don't show up, then fine. Don't show up to practice. Don't show up and kind of do it and not do it. And like, I just, you either show up and say, I'm going to practice and because I'm going to be with this team or you say, listen, I'm not going to do it until we got a new contract signed and I'm going to sit away. And you know, players have done both. I think this kind of half-assing it, like I'm going to show up, but then I'm a faint an injury and then say that that was the reason that. that I'm kind of pissed about my contracts. Like, don't mix the bloods, right? Because realistically, whatever. Justin: So, that's that. And then we got Mangle. You think we can pick another center anywhere? No, I don't. I never said that. I know. In your perfect world, okay, so here's the thing. You can't sign both Mangle and Revis to a contract this year. Jake: Which one do you sign? Throw a Revis. Okay, I agree, no question. But Mangold has been a, Roll Reeves has been good since he started. Mangold has been incredible since he started. Now he plays in a position that's less, it's harder to tell how incredible he is, because he's not the guy blocking a pass in front of Randy Moss one on one in the end zone, But he's still a guy who has been like literally come out of college, start first day, you're good, and he's been great. Justin: You know what the NFL needs? They need a rule that is in the NBA called the the bird rule, Larry Bird rule. It's obviously named after Larry Bird. I know you don't follow the NBA, Jake: so I'll have to explain. I've heard of Larry Bird. I heard he's tall and like... Justin: He is both. He's from French Lake, Indiana. But the Larry Bird rule essentially is There's a hard salary cap in the NBA, you can't go over it. But you can go over it if you are re-signing your own player that you drafted. So guys like Reavis and Mangold and D-Brick and David Harris, you can build the dynasty around these, guys, because you can pay them whatever you want. without having it go over the cap because you drafted them. It's not like you're going out and grabbing free agents and things of that nature, but you can pay your own guys because you drafted them and there's, there shouldn't be a penalty because you did well in the draft, four years in a row, and you happen to draft mangled, debrick, revus. Harris and now you can't keep them because the rules say that you can't pay these guys what they're actually worth So I'd love to see them in this collective bargaining agreement. That's gonna probably happen over the over the course of the next year Build something like that in so that teams can build dynasties through the draft Unfortunately, they can't now because they just lose guys because they just can't pay them Jake: All right. Well, I think that kind of brings us.
00 Jake: It's a good point. I'm not sure how it would logistically work out, or if it makes sense. Justin: Yeah, I'm not saying I could just say, hey, make that. Do that. Jake: I think the other thing that we need to sort of talk about, in fact, since it is sort of a longstanding thing and will not, it will be still here in the next podcast. Justin: Let's talk about it next time. So I'm going to put this on the agenda. Put it on there. Next time. Well, let's talk about lockouts next time. So. You know the frame the conversation and the teaser Jake: Yeah, we'll have to get your feedback from the Twitter verse or the blogger verse or the web reverse or the podcast verse Is that this lockout while seems like it's so far away. We got 2010 Justin: We got a whole year and a half. There are basically deadlines locked into next year that because remember If it doesn't get signed, the next season doesn't start, meaning there might not be those things like training camps or whatever, because they will not have an agreement between the NFL and the Players Association to do any of that stuff. Jake: It will start to affect us much sooner than we all think, so let's start to talk about it. Let's talk about what the what the game plan is and what the probability is and we'll you know We'll talk about that next time in terms of the probability of a lockout, what that means, Justin: and what would mean to football, what would mean to the fans, and how would it affect Jake: us all. Who we would blame, I guess is the question. I'd love to hear from the fans and we'll throw it out there before the podcast. Who do you think is right and who do you think is wrong? Is it the owners? Is it the NFL? Is it the? Is it the players or the players association or is it you know, sort of the lawyers in the room doing the lawyering? So until then since we'll wrap this one up on a we have nothing to talk about but let's talk for 51 minutes anyway Podcast until next time thank you to my buddy Justin and to all you out there and uh in the podcasting world. As always, Go Jets! you
