09 Jake: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Get away! Justin: Welcome to the jacking. podcast. New York Jets longest running podcast on the internet. Period. Welcome to the Monday edition of the podcast. 133rd time I'm welcoming in Justin as my co-host. How you doing Justin? It's Monday and we're podcasting. That's a good thing. How do you think I feel? You must feel pretty good. I'm deep in thought right now. Okay, what do you want to share with the audience? I'm just looking at the standings of the AFC. And I'm just analyzing. I'm analyzing. Is that what a broadcaster would do? Yeah. Okay. Well, let's get to the game since that's what we're here to talk about. We talked about our agenda for today is pretty simple. We're going to talk about the Jets game. And we're going to talk about some other stuff that happened. Then see everybody again on Thursday or Friday when we come back for the rest of the podcast We both produced the Jets win so kudos to us I think we both had them winning by You know a touchdown or two mine was 31 10. Okay? What yours was I think was 27? 17 or 24 17 something like that Clearly not exactly the way we thought the game would go. I honestly I thought that the Redskins Kind of hung in there the whole time We didn't actually have the lead in that game until the fourth quarter Which I know is like this whole fourth quarter thing and the New York Jets and they love to come back in the fourth quarter It's what we do I would like to do the other thing we just come out and dominate from the beginning of the game all the way to the end me too, um, maybe this week Yeah, I mean a big day for Sean Green really because he had three touchdowns He didn't really have any you know a lot of yards 88 yards 22 attempts three touchdowns along with 25 which was off of Was that a part of the wildcat play the game last play the game and the play that he should have probably dropped at the one Like Mgd would get a statistically odd game. Like if you were to have watched the game and didn't look at it, I mean he scored the three. He kind of had like what Sanchez had last week. You didn't really have a very good game. Right. But he scored three touchdowns. Last, yes. And the last one was like the last play of the game or the last offensive play of the game. So if you take that 25 yard touchdown away... on his last run then he had 21 runs for 62 yards or something along those lines which I go right well they kept trying yeah all right they kept giving it to
02 Justin: him yeah I mean and no one else really was running I mean John Connor two for two yards two for two but I think they were both first down so that was a big. Mark, Tom McKnight won for negative one. Tomlinson who was I heard or not heard I don't know he won for five yards although he actually got into the passing game a little bit. The passing side you know homes what's up homes? A pretty good game again nothing you know nothing out of the ordinary. You go to the score and you're like 34, you know, 34 points like, wow, where did all that come from? Like the San Chas to a touchdown? No. Oh, did uh, receivers? No. Okay, I guess just on green ran it in three times from like the one. That's what I know what it looks like, you know, um, because there's not a lot of yards there. Um, but defensively, you know... I think the Jets did okay. They didn't, there wasn't a great defensive game, you know, they seemed to... The Jets defense seems to get better in the second half. You know, it's sort of like the whole team. It seems like the... from the offensive to the defense, it's like a second half thing. And my big thing for the game was I thought that the special teams were going to show up. And they did show up. And they showed up and they played pretty poorly. I was about to say, no they didn't. Yeah, they showed up. They actually showed up on the field. And you know, they had to line up. Missed a field goal. Two field goals, missed another. You know, the closest of the three, which is always disheartening to miss the close ones. On ones that you, you know, 40 yarder. It's not a gimme, but it should be a you know you get if you got the 50 and the 51 get the 40 It was it was 47 and then the fumbling on the on the on the returns is becoming like a thing I think they kind of our thing they showed the stats on it. So I think Crow is fumbled to Uh, they each have two. McKnight's Fumble 2, Curly's Fault 2. They all have two. That's great. We have six. That's twice as much as anybody else. Can we not do this anymore? If you put Jim Leonard back there maybe. Yeah. Every single time. Every single time. It's not like he's a bad punt returner either. Like he's actually a good punt returner. He catches the ball and he runs. Like, what's bad about that? Yeah. He just doesn't look great doing it. It's not flashy. He's not going to, like, run for a 70-yard punt return. But I don't think we do that anyway. No, we don't. We don't break punt returns. We break kick returns. On the Redskins side, we had Rex Grossman sort of having a Grossman-type day, you know? 1946, 220 yards. That's awful, by the way. 19 for 46. Yeah. Really bad. Completion rate. It's pretty awful. Yeah, what is it? It just means you the number there. I don't have the number. Isn't it there? 41.3. Yeah. Yeah, that's pathetic. That's not good No, not you know, not a not a good Joe Flacco game. It's a Joe Flacco game zero touchdowns and one interception So sorry wasn't a game for him. Ro Roy. Hello He's a good, fast little runner.
01 Justin: They kept getting us on those... I like him. He's good. He's the only guy who ran the ball. I've read the Redskins. Yep. And then Fred Davis is sort of their weapon. You know, 6 receptions, 9-9 yards, 42 yards long. That's pretty big for their... He's been doing that all year. Fred Davis is good. He's done for the year, I think though. Moss sort of kept, you know... Average numbers five four forty two. I'm sure you know revus was on him most of the day No, no, no revus was on the guy who's not on the box squirks. He didn't catch a ball That'll be Jibar Gaffney. He's on Gaffney the whole day. Yeah, really? Yeah, I was watching them I'm like, oh they put him on Gaffney and that's why he's not on That's why he's not here at all. That's why you can't find his name in the box court. Welcome back, Reavis. Um, you know, I will say one thing. So I watched the game, we actually watched the game together. Uh, and then, uh, you know, I remained pretty calm. Couple outbursts. Um, and then later on I went back and I rewatched the, you know, the... Jets after point or whatever the one where they talk about the SMY Yes, and why boys the one that you tore off on and I was prepared for them We used to have to fill out the game talking we kept saying wow I bet they're going to rip into Sanchez because he had another Not a bad game. Yeah, the bad second and third quarter. It's like he came out on all cylinders Had a really great first drive played great in the first quarter and a half didn't play very well in the second and third and leading into the middle of the fourth quarter and then turned it on. I'll turn on the jets as it were. Flight 1017. Apparently the homes in the... Still on the tarmac. Flaxico said that they are... No, I mean they show up for games, you know, they both were targeted but... You know, Holmes had the big touchdown in the fourth quarter, sort of the go-ahead touchdown. Um, I don't know. I mean, I don't get this team. This is not the team that I recognize. It's like this... This is the team I recognize. Really the bad team on special teams? The special team problems? Yeah, there's one issue, but this is the team, I mean, they ran the ball 30 times. And not effectively. But not effectively. They still ran the ball 30 times. Okay. And that's the giving up 19 points. They turned the ball over on offense. They turned it over. 100 yard runners. This is not the team that you'd think of. Yeah, it is. Kind of is. Maybe this is not the last year team, the year before that, where we were tops. It kind of is. Well, not kinda. Not at all. But I will say it. We disagree then. Yeah. and we'll see you next time. Because I think this is exactly what we would have seen two years ago. This is the end last year. This is it. Our defense is much better two years ago. They would not have put it... Well, that is no seem to have a runner like that. Well, let's give it this. The three points we gave them.
00 Justin: So three points we absolutely just gifted them by turning the ball over. I think that drive started where? Where did that drive start? On our 31 and they basically gained three yards after that and kicked the long field ball. That's what I would expect, right? We basically let them have, you know, if you look at their fourth quarter, right? when I think we were losing going into the fourth quarter. or it was tied or something along those lines tied. So we turn the ball over on a punt. We force a punt. We muff it and we give them a field goal. Then we force a fumble. Then we give them a field goal on. and a drive that basically netted them 30 yards and they took 10 plays to get those 30 yards and Then we picked them off time to gain. So like that's kind of what I would expect in the fourth quarter I expect that in the fourth quarter. I did it basically the whole second half I mean look at their second half punt punt fumble punt punt Field goal after we fumbled it away to them force the fumble field goal when we're in prevent and the pick That's what's wrong with that. I feel wrong with that is the beginning of the game Where you let a team go down just walk, but if you've watched the Jets for the last two years Then you know that that's what happens. That's exactly what they do They've done it in every goddamn game for the last three years Like I don't see what's different about that every game would give up a touchdown or something in the first quarter and then and then We clamped down. They didn't give up shit after that first touchdown field goal punt field goal punt punt fumble punt punt field goal fumble field goal interception. I'm gonna put that to music. You should do it. Well I mean it's I don't know what you're expecting like you know they're not gonna shut every team out but that was pretty good. I think they played pretty well. I don't know. I know that this team is not very good that they played against Rex Grossman's no no you know he's no Aaron Rodgers but No, Roy Houlud is not a bad runner. They have a good running attack. They have a pretty decent offensive line. They have Fred Davis, a good weapon. I mean, they're not terrible even though they are 4-8 and they started off, I think, 3-1 or something along those lines. It's a team that they should have beaten and they took care of it. 15 point win. Yeah, I think the final score is a little bit... It is a 15 point win, but it's not a 15 point win. That's sort of skewed a little bit. But the big thing, big news of the podcast today or of the game was Welcome Back Wildcat. Oh yeah, Welcome Back. You know, not even, I think it was almost a second play. They broke it out. What was the second play? I remember thinking, wow, it's a little early to break it out. Although it's other than a little you know maybe not lining up correctly a few times or once uh wasn't bad the guys on smy did not like it
02 Justin: it seemed to pick up the the yards though they would that element of, it's not really a surprise because you're lining up in it, but that element of misdirection or just different, it's just a different look and uh you know some could argue that you got Sanchez actually playing pretty well, he's in a groove, he's in a rhythm, why take him off the field or make him a wide receiver for a play, get him out of his rhythm. But I like when you can run for 6-7-8 yards on first down. I mean, I think that's good. They did screw it up once. I think they gained like 9 yards on a first down and then threw the ball twice, which makes no sense to me. But aside from that, I think they did a good job mixing it in. They had Curly run it. They had Sean Green run it. They had a nice mix. I think Curly can throw the ball too. If I remember, I think you threw it once in the preseason, so I'd be looking for that because teams probably don't know, but I know you can throw it. You know, I think a lot of what's going on with the offense, they're saying that the offense is very, you know, that Sanchez... He telegraphs where he's going to throw. I mean they're saying this in the playoffs last year that even Hall came out the opposing corner and said... He dropped a pick. He did. But that they know where he's going to throw and that it's a little bit, you know, he doesn't have enough to like read off the defense. And what the Wildcat does I guess for Sanchez, and again I'm just guessing here because Just a fan, looking at... looking at the highlights, is it kind of allows him to sort of get out of his own head for a second. You know, instead of sort of being in his head, it gives him a second to go stand on the side and, you know, run five yards or whatever he does for those five yards, block somebody or pretend to block somebody. And sort of, it doesn't get him out of his rhythm, it gets him into sort of, or out of his own sort of way. And so he can just come back from the huddle and say, okay, I got another play, let's play a different thing. Yeah. You know, again, the last two years we ran it a lot, right? Not a lot, but not a lot. Not Miami Dolphins a lot, but not Tim Tebow a lot, but more like... I think we ran it more than most teams that are running a regular offense. Like teams that aren't gimmicking their offense. I'm sorry to say that about Denver, but it's... It's not a real offense even though they're doing it And what the Dolphins were doing was not that was gimmicky too. That wasn't like a real Offense they were just you know Let's throw Ricky and Ronnie in the backfield because there are two best players and see what happened But for a team that was running like a real offense. We ran it. I think probably more than anybody. I mean
00 Justin: Brad Smith would do it for five, six times a game. It worked. It worked. Brad Smith would break him sometimes. He'd run for like 20 yards. through for a touchdown I remember last year so I don't know I like it I like the wildcat mixed in there once in a while I think it's worth I think it's worth doing on on first downs I think it's worth doing on on second and shorts Break it out. Why not second and two run the wildcat Better than throwing an incomplete pass So I think the opposite side it would be is this just sort of saying is this admitting that Sanchez isn't working We want him to be this year and saying we we got to go back to sort of you know Helping him a little because it seems like you can't just put because that's what the wild card does it It does take him out of the game. It takes It's like when you say it against the Dolphins, it's like you take your two best players and you put them in the backpale and one of them is in the quarterback. So I don't know. I love to think it's not just saying, oh Sanchez isn't ready to sort of just take the game and just go with it. He needs stuff to help him, to give him a little time off. Again, to break up his rhythm, but maybe his rhythm is what they're trying to break up. Part of his just sort of getting too much in his own head or I don't know. I don't know what it is. I'm looking at, by the way, I'm looking at Sanchez's year to date. He's got 19 touchdowns already, which is his career high for a season. last three through 17 this year's got 19 looks like you'll finish with you know somewhere in the 24 25 range I think that's pretty good completion of percentage I think that everybody complains about well again it's up it's not it's not where we'd like it but it's at 56.5 which is up 2% from the year before yeah which is up another one and a half from the previous year so it's climbing. The rating is up about six points from last year. He's throwing for about 20 more yards per game than he did last year so I mean I think that improvement is coming steadily. Interestingly enough he won his 30th game yesterday. He has a 30th career start. work. That includes playoffs, but he's one of only six quarterbacks to do that in In their first three seasons to win 30 games as a starter in their first three years, so that's pretty good I mean we jump all over the guy. I don't but we brought you the broadcasting we jump all over him and He's just proving us wrong And I like it. Just do it. Go out there, fourth quarter, drive down the field, make a couple of really nice plays in succession to pick up third down and then hit homes on that play.
03 Justin: That's a look off. Pump fake. That's a pro. That's a nice play. That's a really nice play. But there are teams that the Patriots have Tom Brady right now I'm third and three they run that stupid fake over-the-head Tom Brady Yeah Kevin Falk or Danny woodhead run in front catch the ball and Zach has the Pats don't believe Tom Brady can get three yards. No, it's you run these plays It's something that Bella checks. He's on the field Something that you see they don't need it the Patriots don't need to run that they can just run the as we watched a little bit of Patriots game yesterday Ended closer than I Then we I mean it was 31 three I think and it ended 31 24 But I mean that just that just let's just send anybody up eight yards and just Oh my god. And it was a clinic. Watch him throw a West Walker like literally four times in a row. And each time he gets eight to nine yards. It was like, oh Walker's open. Bing! Right. Walker's open. Jake: Bing! Justin: Yep. It was a clinic. Oh, Walker's not open. Tight end open. Gronkowski. Jake: Bing! Justin: He had... I know he's great that Gronkowski he had another three touchdowns yesterday. Oh one of them was deemed a lateral So it was right a rushing touchdown test out. He's he's tied for the Best ever as a tight end with 13 touchdowns. He's gonna easily pass that absolutely brutal All right. Well a good win where we what's what's happening around the way? I should get here playing play it and made of the game and we'll talk a little bit about the rest of what went on My play and my night. Yep. So my play is Of a couple but I'm just gonna pick the one that I thought was the biggest shift play which was after After we I Think we must it was after we muffed the Hunt the punt and Washington got the goal and kicked the field goal. They kicked it off and McKnight had hurt himself earlier in the game so we had Cromartie back. Extended elbow I think it was. And for some reason... Washington didn't want to kick it to Cromartie. So... Both of us just sitting there laughing like, why? We didn't get it. So they kick it short, and they just pooch it out there to the 20. And this guy Baker, who is a special team's probably third or fourth tight end on the team, picks it up and runs it for like 30 yards. And let me see, how many yards was that? He dropped us right at the... In 49 yeah, we got it right the Josh Baker 29 yard return That was my play the kicking because it changed the whole Momentum like Washington had some really good momentum They just they just gave us like a little not a knockout punch, but like a really good
05 Justin: You know body shot where where we were now down after you know a turnover and it just hurts and they just picked our special teams right up by just giving us the ball to 50 and five plays later it's a touchdown. So it was just an easy drive. If they would have just pinned us at the 20 or the 25, that's a not easy drive to have to deal with. They made it very easy for us. What was your point of the game? Night of the game? Um I want to repeat what I did last week. No, the original. Honorable mention to the offensive line who once again gave up no sacks. Honorable mention, noted. Noted. Noted in the in the in the histories, in the bowels of the gifting podcast histories. Is that noted? Alright, um... It's tough, you know, they didn't play like a great game I'm gonna pick Aaron Maven You mean just last week is how you pick last week he just keeps coming up in big spots and making plays and That that play he made basically sealed the deal So good good good way of mentioning my play of the game, which is definitely the sack sack fumble That that I thought was a real Turner because they had the ball and they had been able to move the ball down the field I think at that point they had not moved the ball down the field the entire half But they were they we were not we were up by at that point what we were up by at that point We were up by four Yeah, and that to me was they had the chance to go down there. They scored zero touchdowns after the first drive of the game. Either kick a field goal and put it within one. That was a game changer, because that just made the game go one way. Aaron Maven, I mean, I love the move too. Watch the move over and over again. He actually had a pass rush move. He was literally just going to go around him and the guy's so prepared for him to come speeding around so he starts going all the way out to protect against the backside and he just stops quick, pushes him and then just goes straight in towards the quarterback. Surprised he was able to do that because did you notice that that field was kind of crappy? Very crappy. A lot of slips. It was almost as if like, you know, the Jets are a fast team particularly on you know defense they're speedy like yeah speedy guys like maybe Not cut it, you know make it a bit of a home field event. It's more of a home field advantage the grass like I remember side note I in my Former life I was a
02 Justin: When you weren't a broadcaster before I was a broadcaster. I was an intern for the Brooklyn Cyclones Baseball team. Yes, I was on the the grounds crew and I remember them just talking about you're an immigrant It sort of impacts some things if you wanted to. I imagine that Washington slowed that field down a little because they're not a very fast team. Oh, Roy Hallou is fast enough. He's quick. He's quick. He's strong though. He's a good player. If and. Shanahan doesn't mess him he could be pretty good. him with another, you know, him with another guy. But I totally agree, Arnold mentioned. I was gonna pick, you know what, someone who I, it's not like a big game changer, but just who I saw with a lot of plays and we kept saying his name, it just so happened that I had to go put on his jersey during halftime or I think it was during the third quarter when I was feeling like I got changed at the mojo here. You did change the mojo. And I did it, went in and I threw on the Bart Scott. And I think too. Good game, good game. Good game. I just remember from again watching that one pass where he batted it out of the air, that's sort of my favorite play. The announcers were like, yeah, if he doesn't make that play, that's a touchdown. And they were a little bit more athletic. He would have caught that and that would have been a touchdown. That was a good play. Yeah, it was a great play. It was in the backfield a couple of times with tackles and stuff. you know I I just there's there are games where Bart Scott sort of disappears, you know, like where is Bart Scott? Like where is this guy? They Harris never disappears, but first custom I disappeared I think this is a game where I saw him around a lot I'm like so that's my night of the game is a Bart Scott So do you think that the you know Roy Hallou seemed to have a very good game I don't know if I could like get the splits completely here He finished with a hundred yards But I'd love to know what he had on the first drive because I'm sure he had at least 30 on the first drive I don't know if I can do that or not in this in this Let's see 15 plus 13 Oh, you're looking at like the play by yeah He had to have at least 30 in the first drive 9 there's 24 27 whatever 30 to 40 in the first drive easy 30 let's call it 30 I wonder when and if you know we were missing Mike DeVito and I have to imagine that that was part of that that was part of the yeah I mean but the it's never been the problem up the middle with us like going up the middle you're not going anywhere it's always just it's always there in the edge it's the edge that he gets beyond yeah but it's about the the guys at the defensive end spots being able to sort of get up the field a little right and being able to those edge rushes
03 Justin: Having to kick it just a little wider than you want or like not being able to get where you want to go They weren't necessarily like pitching it wide. They were just pitching it to him. He was just sort of gashing, right? in the middle there. Taking a hole and going for it. DeVito takes up space. There was also a, we saw, one of those plays, there was a Revas sighting of a tackle in the backfield. We're at the line or something, I remember, wow, it was like, really? Revas is tackling, you know, runners at the line? And it was in the middle, it wasn't on the side. I think that was in our video game. No, I swear no, I wasn't I swear it was we did we did play some big and you were winning I'm beginning you weren't for the first time ever. Yep I was beating you mad and we do play a little man before so let's look at the schedule Let's not to schedule a little bit about the rest of the so yeah Now let's talk about what what we need to have so Yesterday some things went well some things didn't since he lost which is the big one so We're all at 7 and 5, so let's recap who we all are. It's us the Jats, it's Cincinnati, it's the Tennessee Titans, and it's the Oakland Raiders. And it's also Denver. They're at 7 and 5, but they're fighting for their division, Denver and Oakland. The wildcards, as we speak right now, is Cincinnati at 7 and 5. Based on the fact that their conference record is six and four our conference record is five and five Tennessee's is five and four and Oakland's is five and five. So we're actually Right now we're the last of those teams. Yeah Based on the fact of conference record based on the fact that Oakland has beaten us head to head. We have two conference games left. We have the Finns the last week of the season and we have the Chiefs next week. We have got to win both of those. Absolutely. I think we have to win all four, but we absolutely have to beat the Chiefs next week to get our conference record up to above 500. I think you know between Denver and Oakland doesn't really matter. They both beat us head to head, so. Just both of them lose but one of them has got to win that division at this point We just got to want them both to basically lose I know you know Denver is now leading the leading that division Oakland has Green Bay next week So that's a good, you know, Oakland should lose that game and drop to seven and six Tennessee they are seven and five they're ahead of us They're five and four in the conference, which means they're gonna have some conference games coming up but next week they have New Orleans so that could be a loss for Tennessee hopefully they'll go to seven and six and the Bengals if we were to look at who they're playing they are playing they're playing Houston so hopefully Houston with their backup situation their defense can show up and and win some games obviously we
01 Justin: have to take care of our own we have to go we have to get to eight and five But it looks like those three teams have much harder schedule than we do next week. Hopefully we'll be sitting alone at eight and five looking down, then we really control our own destiny and don't have to really hope for anybody to lose. We just have to win. Win out. Because next week's a big week for all three of those teams. Not an easy game on the Green Bay New Orleans those to be the two best teams in the entire league Yeah, and Houston is number one AFC. So Tough games ahead for our competition Hopefully, you know, hopefully even Denver could lose who are they who are the tubos playing? The two are playing Chicago at home. Chicago's curtain Yeah, bad, but they have a good D. Yeah, but not that matters. I mean they scored three points yesterday Yeah, they played the Chiefs who? Held Chicago's backup quarterback backup running back to three points You know Chiefs won ten three yesterday and their their touchdown came on a Hail Mary. Yep, so we don't do the same to them, I'll be upset at home. We'll talk about that on Friday or Thursday when we come back for our other podcasts. But we just wanted to give you a little bit of Monday Love. So we'll wrap it up actually. Oh, one other mention is that our podcast is now being broadcast. I'll check my tweets, but they're actually replaying our podcast on Sunday between 1 in. on Sunday? Yeah, they played on Sunday. It's for people all over who want to listen to the games. But they're playing our podcast again and they actually played it last week on Thursday night at 10, I think. That's not Sunday. No, they played it then and they played it on Sunday. The point is our podcast is being rebroadcast, streaming. For all of you out there, if you want to listen to it, semi-live, although you might as well just go to iTunes. You might as well just follow us at Jet Kingdom and Just Jet Kingdom. You might as well just go to Facebook.com slash Jet Kingdom. But if you want to listen to it, I'll tweet it a couple times more. Otherwise we will see you on a football Thursday or Friday, depending, maybe. And we'll have another one and we'll go and do our picks for the week we'll see how our standings are based on tonight's game and Otherwise we'll say as always go check
