20 Jake: Welcome Jet Kingdom Podcasts, the longest running New York Jets podcast ever. I'm Jake and joining me... For the 240th time for the very special episode. Justin, Justin, Justin. How you doing, buddy? Uh, 240. It's like 24. It's how many 24 and X we've had 240. Yeah So there was a thing on the AFC East like they did a thing on the AFC East and Sort of looking back over the last four years. Yeah how many? starters and pro bowlers you had from all those drafts from all the drafts from the entire AFC East on the Patriots and they Wank the team patch Jads dolphins Bill I bet the bills have done the best Nope, really? There's Patriots then Dolphins then bills then jet. No shit because I feel like the bills have done a decent job with some of those drafts Interesting considering last year. They don't have a starter from like their first round. That's not true two years ago. Sorry EJ Well, yeah, but they picked like Marcel Daris who's really good. It was pretty depressing that we that we're the worst We have not been good. Well, I told you last year that it would be stupid as fuck to have 12 fucking draft picks And this idiot goes out and picks 12 guys and gets basically nothing out of it almost nothing Pretty much nothing. I mean, what do we got? Cut half of them. McDougal, Amaro, uh... I don't even know what McDougal's gonna be or do. It might be awful. And then we got a couple wide receivers who might or might come back. One of them's on the Saints. He's... he's good. The worst pick was that last pick, picking the quarterback who's now playing. Taj Boyd. He's on Steel Horse now. Give us a shit. Steel Horse. That's why you don't have 12 picks. Six is a good number. I like six. If we get three starters, I'd be happy. Yeah, six is a good thing. Can we get one thing off the table before we get to the draft? No, oh, off the table? I want to put it on the table and then take it off the table real quick. Can I put my balls on it when it's on the table? I don't know if you'd want to mess with this. Okay, go for it. Because I might get nasty. Okay. There's some rumors floating around about the Jets trading Muhammad Wilkerson. Yeah, it is not happening I've heard those rumors It is not but the rumor was that multiple teams have approached the Jets keep approaching us and we'll keep saying thanks But no thanks pro ball. We're like no he's never made the pro ball No, he's a pro bowl player. He's never made the pro bowl. It doesn't matter. This is why you and I talk about this whole pro bowl thing and I say it's stupid.
03 Jake: And you're like, oh, it's a pro bowl. This is a pro bowl player. But he's not. Well, he has never made the payable, but he's a pro bowl player. But your value is see, this is we've argued. Fuck. We're off on a bad start. See, but you've you've start again. No. Welcome to JKM podcast. Justin, take 240. Too far for you. But you've always said, oh it's a great way to judge players. You say he's a four time pro bowler. Yeah. And I've said that means nothing because Mohammed Wilkerson has never made the pro bowler. He should be a pro bowler. He should be, but he's never done it. You sure? Not even as an alternate? A hundred percent. Richardson got there last year. He did as an alternate. Okay. But he made it because nobody cares. So it ends up being like, I don't know, 100 guys make the pro bowl. Do the people who make it in the first that then have alternates, do they then not make it? They all make it. So you make it. So I really have to leave the pro bowler. Well, not not the good players, though, not mom and Wilkerson. Whatever, they're gonna focus on the draft and then they're gonna give him his extension and if they don't give him his extension, fine, he plays and then they franchise him and then they either extend him or they don't and he's franchised and he's with us. Whatever. Do not want to lose him. We're not losing him. So let's first, so we're gonna talk about the draft, we're gonna make picks, we're gonna talk. positions and players. Let's first talk your top three positional needs for the JTSSSS. Yes, by like importance like the nupsel. Let me ask you what the number one most important player position that we need right now for is quarterback quarterback. I don't think that's can be even disputed. I think it'd be disputed as the number one. Really? Yeah. Because there are other positions that don't have starting quality players starting? Yeah. Don't we have starting quality players starting there? We have guys who've started games. Yeah. But no, I think quarterback is the number one need. That doesn't mean that they're drafting a quarterback. Right. OK. Number two. I think Todd Bowles deploys a three for defense and I think a replacement for that Calvin Pace. Slash Jason Babin. old guy duo as an edge rusher which they've needed forever and have never plugged is probably number two. Okay and three. This is gonna be odd but I'm running back. So we totally agree. I totally agree with you except for I think the edge rusher is number one. I feel like that is the thing that... Here's how I'll put it. There's a chance, while it is slimmer than shit, that Fitzy or Gino take a step up.
00 Jake: No, there's a chance. Yes, 1% chance that one of these guys has an average season. 13.3. What's the chance that one of the two Ed brushes that we have on the roster today... plays better than they did last year. Let me let me make let me make a slight augmentation to that. What is true? Well, what if that edge rusher is not Calvin pace and it's not Jason Babin and it's maybe Quentin Coppols. and one of the outside linebackers that they drafted last year, Trevor Riley or I.K., like one of those guys maybe turns into also a decent outside linebacker and Pace and Babin are just old the Fort dudes who maybe even get caught. Like what if Coppol's in the system can step up and be an Edgerusher like they kind of thought he was going to be. I think that's a lot of yes, I think it's a better chance. I mean he did have six and a half socks last year But everybody got to the party last year. Mm-hmm. I have a better I have a the so my feeling is again if you ask me It's just more need but I think That's a position that has less Talent in it even then the quarterback position. Let me pose a question to you that yes So there's this guy. There's this guy out of USC Leonard Williams Leonard Williams, I think his name is can you verify that for me as I talk? I'm going to so I'm gonna go back to our little Mo woke conversation Now Leonard Williams, I think end. Yeah, so I think he's A lot of people agree that he's kind of the best player in the draft. Yeah, but he's not necessarily a sexy player. A lot of people are saying he's Muhammad Wilkerson. That's who he's being comped to. Muhammad Wilkerson. He's kind of this like 3-4 defensive end who's not really like... You know, mobile gets his numbers, but he's not a 20 sack guy. He's not even a 15 sack guy. He's not JJ. Right. What if they're sitting there at number six and nobody has decided to take Leonard Williams cause he's not sexy enough and the jets can hear me out. I just blew spews in my pants. Right. So we decide, okay, here's this Leonard Williams guy. Yeah. Someone wants to trade us for Muhammad Wilkerson and give us like their first round pick later on in the in the first round Right like maybe Mike Patton and with with the Browns who has two first round picks Mike Patton loves Mo woke from his days with the Jets, right? He goes we'll give you one of our first rounders from Mo woke and we take this Leonard Williams at six And then we have another first round pick to futz around with It's interesting. What would you do there? I feel like I'm the more the bird in the hand Than the one in the bush. Yeah, I want more welcome team. I want more. I want more I'd rather take the guy I know is an absolute beast than the guy that might be a beast
03 Jake: All right. I was just throwing it out. It's an interesting one So yeah, no one has him getting to us better like I've known he's he's he's gone. It's just one of those so okay, so we have it as let's call it past rusher and passer Yeah as the number one and two one and one a one b one b and then running back which I totally agree with right, okay Um, other positions you feel, I feel like safety. We feel like we have, I think we're good at say the gaggle of safeties. A lot of safety. We're good at the corner. I think we're okay there. Um, on the line, always do work on the lines. I think we're very offensive line. I think dauphin's of line needs a little more depth than a defensive line. The defense lines very deep right now. What about, what about a Where's the replacement for the guys who are now getting into their tenth year? So like mangold and dbrick? That's the guys. They're sitting on the bench. They are? I mean, odds are. I mean if dbrick, I mean this guy doesn't even miss snaps. Let alone games. You never missed a game. He doesn't even miss snaps, honestly. He just doesn't. Mangold over the last two or three years has missed a handful of games, but hadn't been hurt really before then. I wonder if Debrink got hurt, would Jack meaning go over to the left and then, you know, a bougie or somebody slides at right tackle or something like that. I don't exactly know. I'm not a fan of picking. That that tackle at number six Not at six, but what that's when we pick right? But those those two guys who have been on our team forever and have been solid as rocks were both picked in the first round Yeah, you you you're absolutely right. I think D-brick was fourth and the angle is in the 20s Yeah, but But I don't know here's the point where you looking at the jets that thing and thinking boy There's a time. Oh, we need to replace that. Well, here's what I don't want to do I don't want to pick a guy sixth overall to not play How about that? I hear you like I'm not using my sixth overall pick as an insurance policy Okay, just wondering I want that guy to start day one wide receiver I think there I think that that's an area where we can definitely pick up a guy I don't think that the guy will be there at six, but if Amari Cooper is there I'm got I'm gobbling him up, right? Kicker solid hunters sure just trying to go down. We know quarterback. I think we see very I think we're deep at tight end. Receiver is one of those things where it's been written about where we're kind of deep, but I don't really see it. I mean sure you got Decker and Marshall, nice one-two, Curly in the slot, great, but what's after that? Like what's after Curly? Who's the number four receiver on this team?
03 Jake: I feel like there's this gaggle of guys who didn't play last year, got hurt. Like who? Shaq Evans. Yeah, that's the guys who like were hurt but like the number four receiver plays. Yeah So no, I don't know. I don't know where our offense gonna look like he might not play a lot He will in a spread the number four is out there all the time Because we're not gonna use a fullback Right remember when we ran this offense with the bills. There was no fullback on the field, it doesn't happen. So extra spot. So that's a wide receiver. See a lot of like four wide or a actually get sp. And the spot. So, there's gonna be a lot of like four wides or a maro will actually get split out as a tight end in the slot, which I think could probably be more comfortable in. Seems to make sense for the personnel. I I so do you want to just go through our like dream? What would happen with the number six? No, no, let's talk let's talk about it Something could have happened. There are all sorts of crazy rumors going on with the number right right? So so that james james to tampa bay That's pretty one for us. Vegas has it as 93.1. James Winston gets picked number one overall. So, Marietta is the guy that kind of is floating around. I've heard him go all the way around, drop like, you know, Rogers did. Right all the way to two. I've heard the Tennessee Gruden's on the bandwagon Gruden's on record saying he should be the first pick Tennessee Tennessee That'd be crazy. Can you imagine being a Browns fan? I mean, you pick like a quarterback in the first round, like four of the last five years. Like how brutal is that? Eventually you gotta get one. So we actually did our homework. I mean, you and I both watch, although I watched, I think all of them. I don't think you watch all of them. No, I've watched three of the Gruden. Of the Gruden camp. Camp ones. They are... Actually quite quite fun. I don't think they're as good as they used to be really yeah I think they used to be better. They used to be a little less Produced yeah, and a little more raw and now I think guys Know what to expect and prepare a lot more for them as opposed to what they used to be I guess It's just more of a I like to hear these guys talk Yeah, I want to see if they're intelligent and I want to look at them I want to look them in the face and say is this someone who I To me, it's about the face. I look at the quarterback's face and I'm like, can I see you standing behind the podium, like, yes, I'm the quarterback of the New York Jets. And that's what I think. Then I have size and all that. So we watch all of them. We'll talk about which one's impressed. Winston actually impressed me. Beyond all the other stuff, he impressed me in his interview. He seemed nice, he seemed whatever.
00 Jake: He was a little bit less, I thought he was gonna be really cocky, and he really wasn't, he was. And his. Track record's pretty good, I mean, losing one game and all that. His track record on the field is pretty good. Is pretty good. Threw a lot of interceptions though. Yes. It's sloppy. And Gruden did a nice little montage of him throwing the interceptions. And it was all... and he basically was all throwing... I forgot the names. Like, P And he's like, do you see here's here it is again, you're trying to force it to that guy. He's not open, but you're forcing it, forcing it. And every time you get picked, it was like forced into this. You know, you learn a lot when you watch those shows is how. How much more complicated. Running an NFL offense is then running a college offense is. Like when you hear like Gruden call out a play and then he diagrams he's like what do you guys call that? And it's like one word right and or like some signal from the sideline like one little hand motion and Gruden's like Blah blah this blah blah number this why banana spider whatever I do why banana and it's like oh my goodness They have to learn a language And that's where you start to as, you know, as an educated adult and not a sports fan, you're like, Holy shit, this guy has to learn a language. And does he have a brain in his head to learn a language? Or can he just throw a ball really far? Right. Because there's a big difference. And that's where you see it. It's like, oh, this guy's smart. He's intelligent. and he has impeccable physical capabilities whereas this guy had a little dim upstairs so he's not picking it up got the arm, got the legs, got the height, got everything I didn't see anybody I thought was a little dim I thought they were dim I thought Marioda looked like a lost puppy I think personality wise he was definitely don't want him in my huddle of running the show So let's talk about so out of so did you like like did you think that you would you like the mario on your on your team? No, if you landed he didn't stand out to me. I think if he landed six They have to pull something off. They have to trade it. They have to maybe pick them and trade them like at that point It's it's worth it you take them, but I don't really want them I These words may come back to bite me in the ass a year from now, but I don't see it From watching him play he's exciting But I just don't I don't I don't necessarily see it. I don't see him. And the Gruden thing really pointed out is like this guy is no personality. He's like a little puppy dog. He seemed scared he seemed scared he seemed like the moment was too big for him There was a guy who impressed me who I liked who was Brett Hunley He, to me, had the personality.
00 Jake: It was like, to me, it was all about the personality. It was all about, he had wit. Yes. And to me, wit sort of translates to he's quick and he can pick up concepts because he's got sort of a sensibility about him that he did. He reminded me, he kind of, he reminded me of... You reminded me of also Wilson my boy and a little bit of Kaepernick. He had a little bit that Kaepernick He looked like a combo of the two Whatever you talking physical or like both. I don't know he just he kind of had that look and then you have a Again wit I think is like the only way to describe it He had the swiftness about him this quickness, but he too had never been in huddles and all that. Yeah, he's a project They're all projects. So who we take so so if there's no do What do you think is gonna happen in the first round? Do you think we're trading? Think we're sticking at six? I think Mar- Maru does the key. You can't even call it without knowing what he's- Well, I'm gonna tell you he's going at two. Then we're picking six. Alright, who are we picking? I hope to fucking god it's a Mari Cooper. You think a Mari Cooper's gonna make it to us? I hope so. Alright. So even though it wasn't your top three need, you just gonna pick him. Yeah. You have ODB like- It's not ODB, it's- This team should pick the best available player. And if he's there at six, I want him. OK, and you think he's going to be there? It's weird because it's getting past the Raiders. But why not pick? But why not pick one of these? So I think he's the guy. OK, I think if the Raiders fall in love with that guy, white at four, who's the other big receiver, then because they're going to pick a receiver. And if they pick white I want Cooper. I don't want white. Okay, I want Cooper You know, I think Amari Cooper is gonna be a stud So I have us picking I think it's either between Beasley or a with the other with the other guy go a fower off the board Beasley, huh? Big Beasley, big Beasley or Shane right now. She just got pulled out for right. You say Shane Ray. Yeah Was picking Shane Ray at 37. Yeah. Oh, so you're doing trading? Oh, no In the second round he ain't dropping us. I feel like he will he's got this foot and he's got his marijuana bullshit I think oh he might now drop but I don't think he's I don't think anyone's I had him picking this first I haven't taken this six. I don't want it. You don't want it six. No too early He's gonna be there if you really like him you could trade back up into the first round to snag him All right, cuz he's gonna last into the 20s. I think Alright, so you so you have us going wide receivers the who you're my second round Shane Ray Shane Ray I cuz I think he's gonna drop and then you go value you say alright I can deal with this We'll put him into our program the marijuana shit will go away his foot Hopefully will be okay because he's such a risk that I think he's the guy that falls He's that guy who falls and you're like, oh shit. It's kind of like the geno pick in the second round. It's like He just fell
00 Jake: Yeah, I don't think he's fallen. I think in the second round. Anyway, Cooper and then Shane Ray. Cooper, then Shane Ray. I'm going to go running back in second round. OK. Now there's two top ones. There's Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley. Those are the two top dogs. I think we might go back to having guys leave in the first round. Might get us running back out of the first round. I think those two are gone. And then it's a gaggle of guys. And I just went with the bigger guy and I watched this video and it looked good. Bigger, like as in physically larger? Yeah, 60, 221, 221. Jay Ajaji. Okay. From Boise State. Great. They're all rated the same, but like, I just like, I watched it. So I'm going to go away from names now as we get to the third round. Oh really? I'm going to pick a third? No. I'm going to pick a position. Okay. Running back. Okay. And then but I want but I want a running back. That is a pass catching running back. Okay. I don't need a big guy. I want a guy in the mold of Darren Sproles. I want a guy. Really? I want a guy in that mold. I want a running back who could return punts, who could be a third down back, a scat back type. Like a March on Lynch type? If you had the mold of anybody that... We have that guy. We have two of them on our roster. Well, one of those coming back from the roster. Chris Ivory is in the mold of... Well, first of all, there is no other March on Lynch. Let's just say that. I want another March on Lynch. That doesn't exist. Well, you said what's the one running back you just want on your team, like from the NFL right now. That's the guy I think of. He's a game changer. But there's one of them right, but I want a guy in his mold Yeah, I so I don't know if I've been like in that mold I want a guy who you can throw out there who can make plays out of the backfield a la Lydani and Tom once in 2010 Okay, I want a guy like Leon Washington was like I want to be able to have someone who could change the game and maybe even like spread out wide, you know, that kind of back CJ Spiller did really well in the Changaly offense. And I think that works. So again, my philosophy in the draft is you should pick a running back every year in the third or fourth round. So third round pick one. I have us in the third round, which is probably a little bit higher than where they're going to be. But I think we're going to be at the point where we should grab one of these guys. So I think Mariota and Winston will be gone. And then you're going to be left with sort of the next group, which is Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson, and Brett Hudley. I've seen all their videos. I looked at all them the guy who kind of impressed me the most the guy who I looked at I said boy you could I could see you behind the right maybe a little older because he looks really young I thought Garrett Grayson. I thought that guy just looked he's had adversity. He said whatever I just felt like Just run the real offense
02 Jake: I feel like he's the guy that if he got drafted, I'd be like, OK, he's someone who might not start. Or if he does, he's not going to be great. But he's a third rounder, someone you don't have to commit your whole team to as well. So that was the guy. Do you have us picking Brent Hunley anywhere in the draft? If he's there in the fourth, I don't think he will be. Yeah, they could be gone. Really? I mean, these guys dropped those. Listen, if he's there in the fourth, I think I'd take a flyer on him, but I don't think he's going to be there. So my fourth round pick is where we. Pick the head rusher. So. Pick a linebacker. But didn't you just have us picking Shane Ray in a second? Oh, I'm sorry. I did because I had him dropping. I would pick it was going to be a linebacker anyway, whether it be outside or inside. I think just getting younger at linebacker is going to be a key for for us. We're really strong on the line. We just re-signed Harris, Tamara Davis is coming up. So like, sort of maybe get a guy to mix in there. We maybe another guy who can do some stuff on special teams. Those linebackers seem to be pretty versatile on special teams. So I'll say linebacker fourth round. Linebacker fourth round. Right. Yeah, anything beyond fourth I didn't pay attention to. Actually a fourth and below that linebacker fourth and then in the two sevens pick fat guys Cards pick fat guys pick big dudes. That's it. Just pick the biggest guys. I don't care snacks Yeah, I mean it's not a lot of picks so what do we who do we have who we missing here because we're missing So the guy is on our team Percy Harvins in here He's one of our picks in there and then our second pick is Yeah, one of our picks is Percy Harvin. Oh, one of the picks is Percy Harvin. The other one is Brandon Marshall. I think and Marshall I think is the Fifth and then Harvin is the sixth Do I have a sixth? Yeah, that's right. Cuz he wasn't on the team right? That's where five and six went, right? feels kind of shitty to have. I mean, Brandon Marshall feels good. Fifth, fine. Brandon Marshall, I'm happy. Six for a guy who's not even like he's not even anywhere on our team. And we won four games like, huh, right? That feels shitty. Like we lost something. We don't even have him on the team. He didn't help us win any games. And here we are without the pick. So they're going to. But I could totally I think, I mean, again, it's hard to predict the trades. But I think if six hit and people are calling them up, I think they're going to take it. I think they're going to take trades. Just move down for more picks. I could see them moving down getting more picks. I think Cleveland, I mean they have two number ones. So maybe it's Cleveland. I'm kind of hoping that Marietta drops just so we can trade him to somebody. Someone's going to want him. I don't want him on our team. No interest. Someone's going to want him. I don't think he's a game changer enough. I don't think he's...
01 Jake: I don't think he's like going to come in and change the Jets. And he's a two, three year guy out anyway. And then if he comes in this year, we're just going to spit this higher. The whole season talking about, you know, Gino Smith versus Mariota, I don't know the whole thing. I just don't want it. There's going to be better draft classes of quarterbacks in the future. All right. So that'll wrap us up. What are you doing tomorrow? You can watch it. You can watch it with me. Are you inviting me? I'm inviting you. Come on over. Yeah, I'll be out till about 745 and then I'm gonna rush home. So you'll miss the first two maybe three I'm trying to get home. I mean who knows it comes on the air at 8 East and They probably bullshit around for 15 minutes before they even put someone on the clock. You think they put someone right on the clock at 8? The first pick will be... I'll probably miss the first two picks. I think it's 12 for the first round. Is it 10? I think it's 12. Then it goes 10. 10 in the second round. 10. 10. 10. That's what I heard. 10. So 10. So yeah, it'll be about 8.20. Again. I just love it for the spectacle. I've always, I've been there for the last two years, so it's gonna be interesting not to be there. That'll be kind of more fun. All right, well, we'll do a wrap up next week where we'll come talk about who we draft. I'm sure whatever it is, we're gonna be very excited because we always are excited. Until then, we'll be back. It's Justin Jake saying, let's go, Jeff. Thanks for watching! you
