20 Jake: Welcome to Jet Kingdom Podcasts, the longest running New York Jets Podcast. Ever. I'm Jake, joining me for 244 times in a row, which is a shit ton, is... Justin. Justin, how you doing? I was looking at all the tables, staring at you. Very ominous. Did you forget my name? Have you seen this hat? The Jets season ticket holder hat that I gave you. God damn right. I don't know which one. I bought it. God damn right though. I'm wearing my Jets hats now And it is now time for regular season talk. Just want to let you know this podcast is not the picks podcast. We are going to make that next week. That'll be like a good hour. Yeah, that's a big one. Go for a long run with that one. So we're going to pick every, we're going to pick the first week and then we're going to pick every week going forward. Yeah. And how we're going to do for the season and all that kind of stuff. Based on all the things we know now. But we do have some news that we can cover some injuries and things like that. Let's just talk through these Alright, so camp slash preseason injury things so Milner, I think demiliner is the one guy that we put on that short-term IR It wasn't it wasn't a Ridley. No Ridley. I think is still on pop. Okay, so he might Start season on pup which means out first six games six games at least right milliner's out eight I think he's the one that can only come back after eight after eight right cuz he's not ready Guys never ready god damn it. I'm he's a waste of space You know he needs to got he needs to come back so that we can trade him for something of some sort of significant donuts Like something about the donuts top ten pick in his third season should be able to get something. He's not Trent Richardson. So there's that great was cut. Yeah, I know. So there's that great article that you know, they went over all the idzic trade or the idzic drafts is two drafts. And out of it, there's two players, two players that are of any value. And who would those be Sheldon Richardson? Yep, which is one and Trevor Riley. I know, but- So like, does Geno not count? No, as a helpful part to our winning team. Well, why does Trevor Riley count as Geno- Because he's gonna make the team and he's playing.
02 Jake: And Geno doesn't. And he's not a dickhead with a punch. No. Yeah, but that's stupid. I would just leave Trevor Riley out if you're gonna leave Geno out and say there's one guy. No. Cause there's a guy who actually could play for us this year and help us win games. But that's not Gino. You're using coulds and not wills and Gino coulds. Trevor Riley is a backup. Yeah. So who will have more impact in the first four games of the season than Gino will. Yeah. You're, you're a little dumb on that one, but all right. How am I dumb on that? Well, you're like, okay, first four games. Like who gives a shit? It's a season. It's 16 games. He's also a seventh round draft pick. But why put that guy on the list? Meaning good value in the seventh round draft pick. Why put that guy on the list and not like beat him? And not put Gino on the list? Because, no he's on the list of shit, not the list of good. No, no, there's all of them on the team. Trevor Riley, you just said, is on the list as a good pick. Yes. As a guy who's still on the team playing. No, I said as a good, no more players are still on the team playing. It's more as a pick that is... Then we have Riley, who's like a seventh rounder, who's a guy who's actually on a roster who will help out, win games. Gino Smith to me at this point is not a good pick. Do you think he's a good pick? I think the jury is still. Oh, my God, I really want to play back to you like like week, I don't know, 10, 11, 12, 13 last year. We're going to get into this in a minute with the preseason games and what we've seen. So I'm going to I'm going to reserve my. conversation about that. So Geno's out for it looks like four weeks, but he's not in any of the special things. He's just injured. You can't put more than one guy on IR and he's not. So it's interesting they think he'll be back before six. Yeah, he'll be back before he's not a pup guy. He'll be back. Okay interesting. So I think the buy is week five. So again, let's make our predictions on Geno being back. Based on because you don't it's not necessarily based on win-loss But at three and one probably doesn't hit the field probably does not hit the field until one in three until fits St and three until fits stumbles right but you have to stumble for a while It was like two games in a row and then it would be like oh, we're three and three and now maybe We should just go back to Gino. Just threw up a little in my mouth. We're one in three. I think it's Gino's job to just fuck up the rest of the season. Not to fuck up the rest of the season. Pull us out and resurrect. Bring us to the promised land. I again, I feel as though this offensive system. And we're gonna talk about this later, but we can talk about it now Well, there's still more guys that are out for let's just go through the rest of these injuries Vickerson who we signed as depth on the defensive line is out for the year
00 Jake: hamstring injury Amaro your boy who you love I do is out Useless do we how did this happen like I remember just like he had a sold shoulder thing like was there a hit was there a Rex Ryan came down and put him in an arm bar and was like you want to talk shit about me I'll fuck you up and he probably did he's like I could fuck you up right now and then he did I love Rex Ryan having some fucking shit dick quarterback He always there was an article on Grantland written by Bill Barnwell is one of my favorite football writers. Yes about Sort of snake bitten head coaches that have been stuck with bad quarterbacks Like they could have been better head coaches right if they just had quarterbacks and Rex was number one Lubby Smith, I think was number two, but Rex was number one on this list. The only thing that kind of It's a little bit just dessert for Rex is that again some of his decision making was got him into the trouble Totally and some of his lack of ability of developing or caring about developing a quarterback put him or having or having Good scouting ability and to be able to say or stand up to your GM or whatever be like no I don't want that guy. We need to go with this guy like again again pulling in T-bow like I mean there was so many mistakes that he was involved in quarterback levels so let's talk about the preseason thoughts quarterback situation what do you think of what you saw out of you know really game three yeah so I have to say last night you and I had two drafts we did we had the jack kingdom fantasy football league draft about for all you fuckers who participated thank you all you auto picked fuck you and fuck you all um but And then we had our sort of what we call our big draft. Our real draft. Our real draft. It's the one that we care about. The league we care about. This league we don't care about, we just win. The league we do care about, we don't win. Neither one of us. Neither one of us. Although you've done much better than I have, admittedly. So while that game was going on, I was not paying any attention. Like, we were watching it for like the first five seconds. But then we had people over. Matty Flynn, he was lighting it up. Yeah, Zach Stacey running over people. Yeah. Anyway, fat Stacey. Um, so what do I think about the quarterback situation? So let's like really just look at game three. First half game three is what really mattered to me. So here this Patrick looks like eating like salt teens. is as a culinary desire. Like, sure, sure. They make you thirsty for something better. Sure. Sometimes you actually want some saltines. Like, hey, there'll be some saltines right now. There's some cheese on the side. Yeah. I'll have a saltine. But there's nothing interesting there. So to me, the offense looks very, very vanilla. It looks very, very just. Simple and I think you made the comment so I'll steal it is that like stealing my thunder. What are you doing?
02 Jake: What would anybody look like in this what Sanchez look like in this in this offense? What would Gina look like in this offense? What would Fitzpatrick we're seeing what he looks like So like but the excitement level watching him play is like on his rector scale is like two. I just don't think he's going to do anything amazing. I don't think he's going to make any amazing plays or throws or do so. I just feel like he's just going to be that guy out there. So here's what I'm excited about. Hold on. No, because you're you're bullshit. No, no, I'm going to go the other side. But I'm excited about the play. Some of the players were seen in Marshall has been the guys out there to play. You know what? You're you're really Chris. I think he has looked good. The offensive line has looked good. tight ends have looked actually just shit useless on this on his look stupid he's dropped balls like in the preseason useless in this offense we lost you know it's a very simple offense okay but isn't that going to be very simple for the defense no because it it's it's designed to do a few things all right it's very simple it's on this one play go for it not based on one play based on watching the preseason. Go for it. They have. A very simple system where there's usually three ride receivers on the field spread. They're spreading sometimes four wide and oftentimes five. And what their goal is is to get one-on-one matchups somewhere. And the quarterback has to be smart enough to see where these matchups are. Can I just stop you for a second there? That is where I think... where you couldn't have Gino slash Sanchez slash Tebow slash Matt Simms slash whoever the fuck run this offense. But Fitz is a good fit for it. I think he might be. When you get a one-on-one with Marshall out there, he's gonna win. A lot. Right. If you can make the throw. anywhere near him, he's gonna make it. He can get there on time. Pretty much. And the running game. Get Chad Pennington in a putt. And the running game, because you've spread the field all over and what they've been doing, if you notice, a lot is they've been motioning a noumoi. Who's a big, big wide receiver. This stacked guy. He's kind of like a tight end. I mean, he's a big dude. They motion him into this like H-back position and use him as a blocker. And he's a really good blocker. And I think that's why he's going to be the third receiver. And they're going to start with three receivers, a tight end. and no fall back. Can we just can we ask? Spot and cracking down and making a key block, right?
02 Jake: And it springs these like seven ten yard run tons of it in the third game against the Giants. They could not stop us For the life of them running the ball our offensive line looks fantastic The the right guard signing carpenter looks really like a solid signing right now. The screen pass, it was like, beautiful. It was like, there's no one even on that side of the field for the guy to even block. So again, and it's just this simple thing that works. It creates one-on-one match ups because you've spread the field so thin on the defensive side of the ball. So agreed, but here's my counterpoint. And again, I'm totally excited. I'm so optimistic about this. But you're a little bit more optimistic than I am. I really am. Because here's a few things. One, we're going to go up against defensive, let's call them geniuses. In fact, we're going up against four games against people right off the bat who I can think of who aren't going to let this simple offense with Ryan Fitzpatrick really fool them very much. They will have a hard time with Rex. Because I recall, I think Belichick will be, I don't think it'll be that hard because he doesn't have talent. We will have a hard time with Rex because I remember what we used to do to the Chan-Galey led, Ryan Fitzpatrick led, Bills and they never scared me at all. Because I knew they couldn't run on us because nobody ran on us. Right. With Rex. And all we did was say, OK, Reavis covered that guy. That guy was done. So that one on one matchup was gone. And then it was just, you know, jam up the middle of the field because he can really only throw like 15 yards down the field. But that's still apply. It all still applies, but I do think I do think that this shit charts on some other team and it's like Yeah, he can't do shit. We're gonna shut him down. He's on our team. It's like oh he can he's I do think we have a better line than the Bills ever had in front of him I think great offense a good offensive and with that I think comes a better running game And when they had their running game going with Spiller and Jackson, which we're gonna have with you know, Ivory and Powell We're going to look pretty good at times. We're going to score some points. I think this offense is going to be better than what we've had for the last underwrecks. The whole six years we haven't really had an offense that I think is going to look as good as this and as cohesive as this and as systematic as this is going to look where you're gonna watch and you're gonna be like. They're running a scheme. They're run- they're playing games. Like, every time I watch the Jets, it's like, what the fuck are they doing? It's like, random ass shit. And like- Wait, that's f-ing often. Wildcat would just come out of nowhere and like, just... Sometimes it was good, sometimes it just wasn't... It was ground and pound and then it was like morning We wanted to throw the ball on West Coast and you got this quarterback who's never done this before
02 Jake: This is simple spread the ball spread the field create the matchups you want make get the ball out quick and get the ball And that's it and the o-line will take care of the running game, right? I'm I was really impressed in that third game against the Giants. I talked to Giants fan friends They said we were missing five starters, whatever, and it was like, okay, fine. Don't know how good you guys are on defense regardless. Bad. Probably bad, but we made them look pretty bad. Well, I'm happy about that. You're supposed to do that. You're supposed to drop points on bad defenses. So, and even yesterday with Flynn and the backup offensive line and Zach Stacey, they're running all over Philly. Just running all over him, he threw for two touchdowns. It was like, eh, it's a scheme. It's an actual scheme that works as opposed to like, let's just throw some shit against the wall on ground and pound teams. I totally get it. And again, on that side, I like it and I like your points. I'm just concerned that that scheme is not gonna hold up against better defenses. Well, we will see. better defenses and I think we start off with a pretty good defense. We start against a good D. We'll see what we can do against Cleveland. And then we go... Cleveland's tough. They got Mike Patton. I mean that is... Patton knows he played against Chiang Gally. He was the defensive coordinator all those years. Yeah. So he knows what to do. We will... we'll see how we match up and they have Joe Hayden who's a number one legit corner. Right. And we'll see if, you know, if they throw him on Marshall, what happens. What happens what happens next um stay tuned Let's see you said defense defense. I think is looked kind of up and down Yeah, I wasn't too pleased with with the way that they've looked so far, but I think we're holding back I think it's yeah, I'm hoping how about that. I'm hoping we're holding back I feel like there's gonna be a lot of blitzing situations going on. I have been disappointed We had three interceptions in the free season. I've been a little disappointed with Um, one player in particular, Damario Davis. Oh yeah. I thought that Damario Davis was going to have a monster season. I thought he's like, okay, here's our next David Harris, dependable middle linebacker for the next five, six, seven years. He looks slow and he's been good. And all of a sudden this year, it's like. penalties on in past coverage missing tackles left and right just guys running running right past him I don't know if he's a half a step just Relaxing in the preseason or something or what that's what I'm hoping Relaxing. I don't know what he's doing out there. He doesn't look right to me And I'll say Leonard Williams. I know he got a little bit banged up in that one game, but I've just been focusing on him because obviously he's our number six pick and very excited He is disruptive. He is just there now, of course He had the one you know, the one safety and it was I mean he was just free He just came off the edge and there was no one there and that's awesome. Yeah, it's not a
00 Jake: Not you and I could run free at the quarterback and maybe to get him in the you know Get some backup quarterback probably not I could I could try to touch him just Touch football. But he looks. And I know we're gonna miss Sheldon Richardson and maybe he goes for more because they're still not sure whether what's gonna happen with that court case. It's in October. So we're just- Never know what might happen with those courts. I know. And then, you know, Mohammed Wilkerson looking, I mean, just the idea of having all three of them at some point on the same field at the same time and just seeing what they could possibly do. would be kind of exciting. It's big. It's big. They're big and fast and strong. Yeah, big, fast and strong. It's like, what else could you want? Give you a little snacks in there. Jesus. You know, you can really rotate. So that's been fun watching. Keep these guys fresh. Everybody else has just been kind of... Special teams has looked pretty good. Better. The last couple of games. Walter Powell, I think, cemented himself. Yes. Because this is one of the questions I was going to ask you. Because Walter Powell looks like he's going to... end up being our kick returner and probably punt returner because he ran one back for a touchdown and he can do the job But certainly not an air kicker by the way Well, no, no, that was the dumbest thing I've ever seen They instructed him to just fair catch everything and he caught nothing He really didn't which doesn't say a lot for a wide receiver, but whatever. Yeah, I guess it's a different skill set But apparently so Jeremy, although I'm not they had a friggin offensive lineman catch it Nobody's rushing at you. Jeremy Curly, I think's on the bubble here. So, wide receivers, we're pretty deep, and I'm gonna go ahead and list guys that I think are definite at wide receiver. Brandon Marshall, definite. Eric Decker, definite. The rookie, Devin. Yeah, because whatever the fuck his name is second round pick Devin Smith. Thank you. That's three Justin: You can't speak you can't speak you don't you don't team Jake: lick my balls, yeah, um Quincy and nuna I think is now the number three I think walter powell makes its squad. Yep, and now it's like I think it's between awusu And curly as to if they even decide to carry a sixth If they even decide to carry a sixth Well, I think they would I think if you think about this scheme you just said it They like to spread, them out they like that a lot of guys like which basically means it running back You're gonna have Ivory and Powell easily Ridley's on the pup, but he counts I think if you're on the pop against the 53 right Stacey, yeah, I think they get rid of Bohannon. I think no fullbacks on this team, and I don't think you keep Daryl Richardson either. I think you just go four. Daryl Richardson, may he go as his practice squad? Maybe, I mean, he stayed there all year last year. I think that's where he goes. So I think four running backs, which is thin, if you think about it. Right. And... Two tight ends which make up for maybe allowing you to carry six or seven receivers
03 Jake: Especially ones that like if you're not gonna contribute on special teams You kind of can't be on the team, right? Which makes me wonder about curly because he's really just a punt returner who doesn't really return like just a bunch I think he's a punt catcher. He's a punt tree doesn't muff them. So He's dependable. Right. You don't want a guy that's just going to mop and drop and right fumble. He doesn't do that. Does not do that. But if Walter Powell can do that job and return kicks, which Curly can't do. And Curly's not even really the slot receiver. They just wonder because I think they're going to cut him. The thing is the money because they signed him in the offseason last year. Last year to to a big contract. They own like four point seven million this year. So two million guaranteed. I read it. It's two million. It's more than that. It's not for something. They caught him. It's only two million Hmm, and then it's then it's over. So I wonder if the joke is gonna be on team within four seconds Absolutely. I'm just like why not trade him? Maybe you look at a team like Carolina and be like you guys have no receiver. Right? Why don't we trade you this guy for a six round pick right? conditional Yeah, or any pic just a pic with a dollar will give you a dollar Well, no, cuz he was send us some footballs. We Sign them first. Yeah, I can give cam sign some footballs, please set him up here Yeah Jeremy curly for Luke Kuechly go and I think it's interesting cuz there I guess if it wasn't this It wasn't this front office that made the decision to sign him and to give him the extension. Fresh, fresh eyes. And I think they probably are just more like what fits this system and what kind of guys we want. You know, younger, bigger, upside guys who we don't have to pay a lot of money, right? Because they're all wookiees and second-year- You still have like Shaq Evans in the mix, you know what I mean? There's like eight or nine receivers. And I can't see him keeping more than six. It just doesn't happen. Right. A lot of them out, but they're all kind of the same. Right. They are kind of just throw. Throw. I don't think Anunwa is the same. I actually think he's the best of the lot of what we're talking about here. I mean, Curly's probably the best receiver. Right. But Anunwa does the things that we need to have happen on the field. Blocking. Being just a big target over the middle, right? But Curly's a better receiver, like a third down slot guy. It's third and six hit that guy for seven yards, right? I mean, he's I think he'd be a New England in a heartbeat. Although that that's also always painful. You drop somebody. And I think he'd fit in right like. Perfect there. Throw him in the slot, short passing game, that's his game. He'd be right up in New England and that would hurt. Speaking New England. Speaking New England. Fucking Tom Brady. Free Brady. Timmy fucking Brady. Yeah. So if you left the dark side of the moon, whatever.
03 Jake: They were fucking yesterday. He's going to play the full season. Fuck him. Fuck him right in the balls. Yeah, I mean, it doesn't really matter to me as a jazz fan because I... They started poorly last year, and they won We get to the playoffs, we need to we need to basically beat the Patriots split with them. We were going to split. We're going to we were going to meet them twice with Brady anyway. I don't think it really mattered to me. I just don't I just don't you know, I think Garoppolo is probably gonna win two of those four anyway. So I think they're gonna be two and two at the worst. And now they're probably gonna be three and one or two and three last year. So right. They went from two and three and they just rolled. Right. I think they lost one more game. So then I just I just didn't as a Jets fan, it just didn't have it. Now as a football, whatever deflategate. I don't know a and, the, the I don't actually I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. and then have it come down to absolutely nothing. Like how about just find the guy like 50 grand and call it a day and like then it would've could've been over and we could've talked about real things all season as opposed to this stupid thing that we know didn't have an outcome in the game that is a $25, that is fine anyway that people have been fined for. It's just all all all all this shit just kind of turned into this storm. I mean, the only thing now is is it separated out the people who like the Patriots and the people who hate the Patriots. The people who hate the Patriots, there's more of us. People who like the Patriots, there's probably more of them, too. But it's it's certainly made that divide. Good to know that Donald Trump is Patriot is Tom Brady's friend. That's a friend you need. Anyway, moving on. Douchebag, all douchebags. Jet Kingdom Fantasy Week happened. It did. Yes, we did some... You know what we need to do? What? We need to announce this Pick'em Group ID because we've been asked on Twitter what it is. So this is for the Jet Kingdom Pick'em. We go to Yahoo Fantasy. Yahoo Fantasy Sports. Tell them. I'm just... I'm going to say... I'm going to go there. And then there's a type... Oh, is it called Fancy Football? And it's called Pick'em. Hm? Yeah, who pick them? Yes. Yeah, who pick them? It's called pro football. fantasy.com. I would just just pick them into your thing. and then there are these groups and you can join the groups and our If there's a button to join group and our group ID
04 Jake: is 3653. That is for the 2015 Jet Kingdom Pick'em. And you will see a bunch of us in there. So there- are currently, I don't know, 10, 15 people already in the Pick'em already. Let's see. Who's in there? Anyone good? You're in there, I'm in there. So that's good. There's two people. So you can join and we will, this is how we will pick the season because we'll use this as our for picking the season and we'll see who's doing well and not. So you should get into that. Definitely. And I guess we could tweet out the link to it a couple times before the start of the season. Which is next week. So we are going to try to do our podcast next week, at least a day or so before Thursday, because we're going to pick the whole the whole slew of games. But first, we're going to pick our favorite episode of the year. We're going to pick every game of the jet season. This is the this is the only non-Homer. game picking that we do because we will actually pick with reality as our friend sitting here co-piloting co-host reality and we'll actually say do we think we're gonna win this game versus this game versus this game. Probably a little homorism in there but... Tons of it. Well you have picked the Jets to win the Super Bowl I think twice out of this thing. It's been known to happen. We can't even get so close those years! Yeah, those weren't the years you picked them though. No, it's not even true. And we will also pick the Super Bowl, we'll pick the playoffs, we'll pick again, the reality one, then every week, we'll go back to our home or bullshit. All right, so we'll be back then for next week. Until then, as always, you can follow me at JetKing, follow Justin at just JetKingdom on Twitter, although we never post anything, so don't do that. Leave us reviews on iTunes and Citro and we'll be back. Yes, we will be back. Till always, as we always say here in the JK podcast, let's go Jets. It's time to make it happen!
