17 Jake: Welcome to the JetCaming Podcast, longest running New York Jets podcast ever. Hi, everybody. It's Jake and Justin. How do you do? Justin: What? Jake: Look what shared him way. Yes, you're wearing your Rolling Stones New York Jets official T-shirt best best thing to play on that stadium in a while Justin: Wow, I Jake: Mean first of all once again, we are fails on fails on fails, but We have 30 minutes to have a good about deals. Justin: Wonderful. What about him? Jake: I mean, everything's happened. There's been a draft. There's been a draft about the draft, didn't we? We did a draft preview. We never did a draft. We really are This is why you don't pay us because you want your money back. All right. Shit. Do I have to go look at the draft? Justin: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. We're not going to talk about your minds. Can I just talk about Jamal for a minute? We're going to talk about like we're going to go money. Jake: We're going to talk about Jamal Adams and we're going to talk about what we actually think is going to happen this season, because as of yesterday. Um, our linebacker, and this is happening all over people. Yeah, we're going to talk about that too. Yeah. So we'll talk about opting out of the 2020 season and Corona style. Right now. So Jamal Adams got traded away to the Seahawks for two first rounds, one this one next year, one year after and a third. Justin: That's correct. So it's a it's a full on package of Jamal Adams plus a fourth round pick going to Seattle. Okay. And return. Yep. In return, the Jets receive a safety. McDougal who I believe is a starter. He started for Seattle last like three or four years. Right. We also receive the 2021. and 2022 first round picks of Seattle and the 2021 third round pick of Seattle. So for Jamal Adams and fourth round pick you receive worst version of Jamal Adams, two first round picks and a third round pick. I think Yeah, and you give up the fourth. I think you do that deal any time, every single time, unless the player's a quarterback. Jake: Yeah, I mean, there's no doubt that to get two first rounds is basically, I mean, he
01 Jake: is a first round. So that's You're kind of getting back his value. They're not going to pick six. So no. Justin: I mean, what you're doing is twofold. The first thing you're doing is you're maximizing his value now. Right. Even though he was disgruntled, you're still able to get what you were able to get for him, which is pretty good. Um, you know, he's out there in public doing all the shit. And like, if you really want to, I mean, it's kind of sad. It's like, if you want to get your ass off the jets, here's what to do. Here's the playbook. Although I don't think Joe Douglas would have just traded him for a bag of balls. He got a quarterback Hall. Back for a safety. Like these are the things that set teams up for the future. You have your quarterback already, you think. And you have to build around that person now. And they know that one more year Jamal Adams at his rookie deal. Then he's gonna wanna get paid. Like, have fun Seattle. Have fun negotiating with a guy who thinks he should be paid like Aaron Donald and thinks he should, you know, Joey Bosa just got paid. Like, he's gonna wanna get paid like those guys, but he plays a different position. He plays safety. So, like... The economics of it all just doesn't work out. It didn't work out for the Jets. And it's unfortunate that like their best player had to go. But if you're looking at it long-term, you're saying, well, this guy's been our best player. He's been on the team for three years. They've won five games twice. and they've won seven games once. So he's doing all of nothing to help us win actual football games. He's a safety. And that's where you kind of just sort of dry and be like, man, he appears as though he's the heart and soul of the football team when you're watching them on the field. There have been barely a whimper from the team and his teammates about how much they are so sad to see him go, which makes me think, well, maybe he wasn't such a great leader in the locker room. Maybe it was all for show. And not to get super negative on him, because I think he's probably like, if not the best top three safeties in the league. But I don't think he's in the top 10 like defensive players in the league in total. And that's where he thinks he is. And that's where he wants to get paid. And it's a business at the end of the day. And the Jets made a business decision to make themselves better. I think in the long-term. Jake: Yeah. I mean. He's one of the few players that I would, you know, I think we talked about off season stuff. It's like one of the few players I didn't want to see go. I get it. I don't like this. I don't like the media, social media, people blowing up stuff,
03 Jake: being vocal externally, saying I want off the jet, saying I want to go to the Cowboys, like all that stuff. I just hate that shit. I think it should stay out of football. I should stay. It just feels like that stuff should be handled inside. So I don't like an administration, the Jets administration, who allows that to happen and then doesn't do something about it. Right, so he was making noise and they'll say, oh, it wasn't about noise, but I think they got back a haul. I talked to a Seahawks fan and... He said, you guys did great. We gave up a lot for that player. He is, he's a first round talent. He is one of the top three, five safe. And not from a stats, whatever, you know, but from a just watching him, we watched him, we watched Jess games, we rewatch Jess games. He was just fun to watch. You could just watch him on the field and you'd see him make moves. Great tackler. Ball Hawk, not a great interception machine. Justin: I think you know what that was. It's not really on his position. I mean, and that and that's the that's the other argument. Right. Is to say, hey, Justin, it's not safety, dude. And when you do rewatch the games and you really look at it like, oh, right. Like he is, but he isn't like he's on the line. Blitzing a lot. He's in the box. Peace! Not like he's not a real Thomas, right? He's not the free safety guy who's going to go swap balls out of the middle of nowhere and intercept things from centerfield. No, that's Marcus, May's job. Jamal's job was to fly around and do a bunch of stuff. And statistically speaking, he did those things. Yeah. Probably I think he's the leading sack guy on the team if I'm not mistaken. You know at least top two You know, he's he is that guy he did score touchdowns I think he scored at least two this year, you know one he beat the Giants single-handedly if I recall Yeah, I remember that game. You really Hey Daniel Jones, I'm gonna like knock the ball out of your hands and like just take it from you and score later buddy but All that being said, man, that is still a lot to like receive for a player. Like two first round to be it. Because when you really start to think about it, it's like, all right, well, fine. Seattle's probably picking in the 20s. Fine. And if the Jets pick somewhere like in the teens, you package them. Well, you package them. That's the whole point of it. If you have a guy in mind and you see that guy, and you're like, that guy's a top five pick, or top seven pick, whatever, and you don't have it, you're picking 13th. You have the ammunition to go get it now. Go get that one guy. Or... Hey, stick around, pick two. All good. You can always pick a lineman at the end of the first round. You know you're doing all right. You know, you're probably getting a first round talented lineman right there in the end of the first round, or you trade back into the second and see what Joey D can do.
03 Justin: And you just... have a bunch of draft assets. Jake: I guess on the other side, I would say he was supposed to be the foundation of this team, right? Especially Sam on one side and Jamal on the other. That's the foundation. That's who's going to be that for the next 10 years, these two are going to be the two leaders on the team. And this team just didn't get better. Like we didn't just get better. We just got worse. Like if you look at the team from a roster standpoint, we just got worse. So there is a theory in football of like constantly. getting better. But if you're constantly getting better, but not actually getting better, if your team isn't improving. So okay, next year we have and two years from now. But that's not gonna help us win games this year. So it's not, you know, this are you signing up for another frickin five win game seven wins and be like, Oh, well, that's another other set of another set of wins. And it's like, well, you just got rid of your best player on your team without a doubt. Okay, now what? Justin: I mean, I guess the question to be asked is, what is the in terms of wins, win shares, if you will, what's the difference between Jamal Adams and McDougal or the guy we drafted this year. to play safety. Like, what is the difference in terms of games? Is it two games? Does Jamal Adams swing it? Two games in our favor? We've already said one game that he single handedly won. Right. So, OK. Do we end up losing one additional game because Jamal Adams is not on the Jets this season? Maybe, maybe. Jake: I kind of think that's that's I think that's actually the truth again for the future and for the Paul you got you got right you got quarterback money or quarterback trades for a non quarterback for a defensive player it doesn't happen that it's not even like and not even like Camille Colomac right Von Miller like a guy who literally just Rex games right like come back like Rex game you have to double team him you have to change your whole. Justin: blocking scheme. You know, you have the game plan for that shit. I don't know how many teams go into a game against the Jets and are like, let's game plan for Jamal Adams. No, they're not. But again, Jake: we'll see. I'm, I'm a little bit a little bummed like on a fun to I bought the jersey with the name Justin: thinking this guy's gonna be here a while you don't you know, as Jeff fans sucks to have to by the damn jersey because you have to commit. You never know if the guy's going to be there for a year, three, five. Think about it. Where are the first round picks? They're all gone. Where are they? Where's the backbone of this team? They're gone. They don't even make it past their first contract with us. Jamal is the latest to go. Jake: So now who's left? So that's that's the bad part of this constant churning is like the constantly stocking up for next year, but you're losing this year, but then you're stocking up for the year after that, but you're losing that year when do you win and stock up? That's the that's the magic.
04 Jake: But let's talk about actually, I think the bigger issue because. Training camp is happening going on. It's very sick. It's these you know, it there are Preston whatever but it's it's a Corona verse version There's no fans. There's no preseason they canceled preseason and Now that we wanted no breezes and now what's happening is and they've announced Obviously, New York and the Jets Giants have announced no fans. So that's not happening. Now we have players who are opting out, just saying, yeah, I'm not going to play this year. Like seven wide receivers on the Jets, I'm sorry, on the Patriots have already done it. And we just had CJ Mosley on our team say, nope, not going to play. Honestly, I didn't even remember this was a thing. Like, is this a thing? You could just... from your contract is opt out. I'm not going to play this year. What happens to the team? What happens to their contract? What happens to their salary and all that? Does it just to say I'm not Justin: going to play? So what they do is they they get their it's called like a toll. So they've called bit told basically like you are. Your like bonus money, you get paid. Your salary money, which is not guaranteed, Steph, rolls to next year. So Mosley was due 16 million this year. He got six, the 10 rolls to next year. And by the way, his contract end date rolls a year. Oh, so he's one more year. And actually, like, sort of in a weird way, helps the Jets with the salary cap, because it sort of like splits it around and like makes it so that next year it's not 16, it's 10. And tax the year on to the end of it, which you know are garbage years anyway. Right. The shitty part. I don't know what I'm... This is gonna sound terrible. This motherfucker has played all of like half of one game and half of another. And he's going to be on the team for two years as our big free agency signing guy, highest paid middle linebacker ever. And he'll have played two halves of one game or two halves of two different games over the course of two seasons, which we'll have paid him a lot of money for, which we've gotten zero return on that investment. So number one, I'm glad that Avery Williamson wasn't just. dismissed and cut right off the bat because they were going to do that. They didn't. They also brought back a bunch of the middle linebackers from last year that showed promise like Neville Hewitt and Burgess and Cashman will be back. So like, not that concerned about that position. It's just all right, well. That wasn't a position that we were thin at. What if a receiver decides no?
00 Justin: Or offensive lineman decides no. Like the Patriots have already had seven, I believe, guys who have said no. Now I have my own theories about the Patriots. I'm pretty sure Belichick said, hey, all of you, I don't care about this year. Brady's gone. Let's go like 0 and 16. Let's tank the shit out of this year. All of you, just go. Like anyone who's any good. Go relax with your spouses. We'll bring you back next year, no problem. We'll have the first pick, we'll draft that quarterback, and we'll be off into the races for the next 10 years. This is the Patriots, okay? You got to think of all the angles with them. Jake: Sure. Well, I think it brings a bigger question, which is, and this is how it's going back and forth with a Bill's buddy yesterday because he texted about this. He's like, oh my God, just lost. mostly and and then some stuff about the Patriots. So I think this brings into question at the NFL season, honestly. Yeah, it really does. I just don't. I'm getting less and less optimistic that they're going to be able to do it. I know baseball started up again. I heard I was in a small baseballs. I'm fucking nightmare. Right. They're Justin: following the wrong model. But they found the wrong model. The NFL should be following the NBA and the NHL model and not the MLB model. Because what we're trying to do is emulate what Europe did with their soccer. And they did it successfully, but they're ahead of us. And. What we did with the MBA is we created a bubble down in Orlando in Florida. They said, here's a bubble. You're not allowed in or out. If you go out, you're not allowed back in. We're going to test you, quarantine you, etc. And basically everybody, players, staff, etc. Piled into the bubble. And they're playing and they're okay. MLB, they're doing like what the NFL is doing. They're like, all right, normal schedule. Like we're going to fly around, just no fans. Well, the Marlins, two players got it, which very quickly escalated to basically the whole team had it, which then basically escalated too well. They had it and they were in this locker room in Philadelphia. So, the next team to play the Phillies did not want to go. So they didn't. So those all got canceled. So all these games have been postponed because the Marlins, the Reds, I think there's another team now even like dealing with this where once somebody gets it, it's like wildfire. Jake: Like you can't prevent it from spreading within the locker room, right? Especially if you're in a locker room and not not not even lined up across from each other, breathing on each other from everything we know now. Like the worst thing you could do is go head to head and breathe on somebody else. Yeah. Just with heavy with heavy sports breath. Justin: So like the MLB is just. They're trying and they're doing interesting things with fans, like from home,
04 Justin: trying to bring the experience in and like all that like virtual digital stuff. But I just don't think that they're doing it right from a player safety perspective, because I don't know if the players are going to want to. Do this, although the bubble presents its own challenges. Like those players are away from their families. And imagine like a whole season, which starts now and ends in the end of December and being like, all right, you're in this bubble. We're going to pick somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and we're going to have a bubble. But I don't even know how that works for the NFL, because the stadiums are too... Well, they would have to stagger. It's like, we're not playing every Sunday. We're going to spread these games out, and we're going to have this bubble across, maybe across where there's a handful of college stadiums in... Jake: a 50 mile radius of the people being a football has way too many people to try to try to do that with i mean hundred people total with all the staff and the trainers a hundred times teams that's 3200 people like you can't and if the other bad scenario with the bubble is if the bubble gets infected then the whole bubble is gone then the season's over basically everybody gets Everybody gets sick or everybody gets corona. Well, they quarantine them immediately. But I'm saying in the bubble, if I get got in the bubble, then the teams all the teams start to get hit, Justin: meaning if they're at least away, they don't let them they don't let them in the bubble. They test they test they test. So far, so far. How long has it been though? Jake: Uh, three or four weeks. Yeah. All right. I mean, all it takes is one person to come in. Justin: No, they've had to happen. Like where a guy went out, like, listen, these guys are not like, you know, there are NBA basketball players. So like, you know, guy goes out to strip club. So he's going to do like, why? It's not open. Why is it open? Is there an Atlanta and like, of course, it's open. Like they're in Orlando. The guy is like, I'm out of the bubble. I'm going to Atlanta. going to strip club. So he's doing NBA player. So that's, I don't know, that's their life. I mean, sounds great. But like, like, you shouldn't be doing that, bro. You can't be bringing that back in the bubble. Jake: So let's, let's go back to let's go back to football. So what we know they're going to try we've, they're going to cancel everything so far. And you could just sit, it was like when things started to shut down in all across the country, like it's this wave and they start to cancel this, then they cancel this, then they cancel this. And you can see this wave happening. What's deeply concerning to me as someone who is looking forward to whatever football season there is. I mean, I think they should have just figured out how to do like a Madden season where literally on Sunday two Madden people do virtual. Yeah. Just play the season, but just play with Madden.
01 Jake: Fine. But I, I'm, I just don't, now I just think, I think they're just punting and I can't, I, either they're gonna, they're gonna delay the season. They're gonna move it out a month. I think they have plans, they could do it, they could move things out for a month, or I could see them canceling. I know they're gonna wanna try, I know MLB is trying, but I mean, how many people go and opt out before they realize, yeah, this is just not gonna work. We're not gonna be able to do this. Or how many COVID, you know, IR spots, and they can't even have training camps that are big. So it's like, it's the opposite. It's not like you can say, okay, everybody can have 100 people on your team, right? Because a roster of 100, great, no problem. It's the opposite. They're like, they're making it smaller, less people going to training camp. So that's supposed to stop the infection. But that means there's less people. And that means as people get infected, I mean, How would fantasy this year? Like I run a league, we're in multiple leagues. I'm like, what's sitting around going, am I ever going to have a fantasy season this year? Is it even worth it? What's that going to look like? Yeah, we need that COVID spots. COVID IR spots. Yeah, should I put four more spots on IR so everybody could just move in and out? Everyone just drafts 19 players. Oh, I'm getting less and less optimistic. I will say it's starting to really start and really hit home. Especially we're in August and we should be like watching the Hall of Fame game this weekend. Justin: Yeah. And maybe I think actually we should have been watching it yesterday. I believe. Jake: Then you look at like, okay, so opening weekend. It starts the game start. I just don't, I just don't know how they're going to do it. I just, I just don't. I wouldn't worry so much about the games. Justin: It's more the what goes on outside of those three hours or that day. Like I wouldn't worry about the Sunday. It's the Monday through Saturday that is concerning because it's like. people coming and going from facilities flying, which I'm sure is, you know, that's probably handled, you know, I'm sure that's not like, let's all hop on a commercial flight. No, no, Jake: it'll be a private plane. And it'll be, it'll be like concerned about the coming and going. Justin: from the facility. So like at wherever the hell the jets are these days in New Jersey, wherever the hell that is, the Atlantic health facility, like that would be the thing I'd be most concerned with is like guys coming and going and like, where are you going? You going home? Where are you going? You want to have dinner? Like who are you with? What are you doing? And then when they come back and they test positive, like I'm sure you've got to test the guys every single day. I don't like how do you let them how do you let them in the building? Yeah.
03 Justin: Yes, you let one person in the building. And then everyone to have it, it could be over from there. And then the team itself is like. Because then what's built into the schedule is you've got to have like weeks flex buys. You almost have to have like a flex buy. So that whole team's out the jet jet sort of like this is this is a flex buy like you sorry 32 of the players got coronavirus like they literally can't build a team. So you can't just impose a loss onto a team because of that. So you have to have these like, I don't, I haven't heard anything about them. I'm just going to call them flex buys because you kind of need like two or three buy weeks just in case. Jake: I was much more optimistic when, until people started opting out, when I saw this wave of opt outs, it started to. Like, oh, right. So even if you were told to do it, even if they did precautions, even if we have tons of players, there's people who are just going to opt out. And then basically the season is going to be terrible football. I mean, think about it. There's going to be less training camp. There's going to be less. There's no preseason. I think the entire season will look like preseason. It will be like where you have multiple quarterbacks starting over the over a game. You'll. every team won't be stars don't want to play a full game you will never see you'll be have one player who plays the entire season through everybody will be on ire at some point yeah you know so Justin: i mean there's gonna be so many of these like soft tissue injuries and just yeah things that you can't possibly like get ready for for a season bad football it'll just be bad football it will Jake: I'll be like watching preseason, you know, vanilla. football. So then you ask yourself, do you even want that? Do you want this loop down? No fans, no anything bad football, not the stars playing people getting hurt. Maybe someone dies. You know, how fast will that wrap up this season? The first you know, player to the first player dies of coronavirus that they got during a game, how fast is that just go? Nope. Then factor in the government factor in these states what if what if The governor of New York, Andrew, says, no, no Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No, you can't come here. I mean, it's obviously New York. Let's call it Jersey. No, you can't come here and play. No, because you're a hotbed of coronavirus. Or you're, oh, sorry, you're the Houston Texans. You're going to come up to New Jersey and play the Giants? No. Nope. Not even going to lie to you to come. Sorry. We don't, we think that you're like bringing viruses into our state. That's already happening. So again, I'm it saddens me, but I just I can't see how they're gonna do it. I hope they do it. I hope it comes out great. But now as the season as the days and months have gone on, you know, months ago, I was like, Oh, they'll be able to figure it out. And now Mike, I don't know how they're gonna be able to figure it out. I think there's too many moving parts. So I could see them just punting.
00 Jake: sometime end of August and just go no season or they'll delay it. What they'll do is they'll delay it. They'll hope the vaccine comes out, which it won't in two months. And then they'll then eventually just punch for the season. Justin: I mean, the good part about it is that it is an all weather sport. So if it needs to push and not start till November. Fine. True. Jake: But what's November different than now? I mean, there's no it's just time. It's just time, right? Justin: Yeah, maybe it just needs another couple of months. I don't know nobody knows right? So what is November don't know I don't I can't answer but Well, well we will no different in November than we know in August Jake: So 17th level of Jumanji is November. I'd never seen the movie and I know that there's been a Justin: lot of references to it recently. So I should probably see it. Yeah, or at least know what it's about. I Jake: 2020 is like a game of Jumanji, where we had forest fires, you know, murder, murder, murder, herness, coronavirus, and now we got hurricanes coming. So yeah, murder hornets still freak me out a little still, still freak you out. All right, well, let's wrap it up. Not the most fun, but Sorry to see you go, Jamal. Later, Jamal. It was fun watching you. It was. I agree. Let's hope there's a season. We'll always have that dance scene. Justin: Yes. His rookie year. Jake: Yes, the dance, the Bill's Dance Game. That was the best. Love that. Love that Giffy. All right. That's it. It's Jake. It's Justin. It's us. We'll see ya when we see ya, as always, let's go Jets. you
