09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Jake: Welcome to the Jet King Podcast. As always, on this side of the... oh my god, we lost our podcast and this is re-recording it. Hi all, it's Jake joining me, freshly in his green but not jet-screen shirt. On the other side of the coast, although we are in the same room, is Justin. Justin, how you doing? Justin: You can be on the other side of a coast. Yeah. We're on the west coast. West coast. Which I love because football starts Jake: Literally minutes. Yeah in an hour and a half football is gonna start. It's 8 30 really cool. You wake up and football's on it's cool So first of all apologies. Yeah, we're sorry. We recorded we tweeted we were gonna record a podcast and we did we really did It was a good one. It was great. It was the best best one ever. So this episode is actually 94.5 Okay Because we recorded it And in typical fashion, basically GarageBand crashed when I started to go work on the podcast to export it and lost recording. So no good at all. But I think it was a sign from God because... It was a bad sign is what it was. Yeah, it was a bad sign because then I think maybe at the exact same time of practice, Jim Leonard got hurt. Justin: Yeah. Jake: Let's go back and talk about the agenda a little bit. We're gonna we're gonna wipe away all the stuff that we talked about We we literally went over You know the games and all this none of that gone cuz it's already been a game We're already in this week. It's Sunday morning You got you're gonna have you know just over 24 hours to to listen to this podcast But and the games are gonna start so we're gonna just do makeup predictions talking about the keys the matchup coming up on tomorrow night and I guess the big news really is that Jim Leonard's out for the season broke his fibula. Yeah he's on the IR. Yep and how that affects the game? Well negatively of course. Yeah that's not good. Not even the game the season the the rest of the year. It's not good at all. I think on a couple levels. One, he's a great returner. He's a great punt returner. Two, he's a great... he's the guy who calls the defense. I want to I want to curb the use of great. Justin: Okay. I want to... Because great is often used when Jim Leonard is a good player. He's a sure-handed returner. He's a good returner who always catches the ball, doesn't punt, and sometimes... you know, returns it for 15-20 yards. Let's not call him a great... Jake: He's no Devin Hester back there. No, true. And that's not where we're gonna miss him.
00 Jake: We're gonna miss him because he's the guy with the mic in his head, you know, in the... in his helmet and he calls the plays. Right. And let's not call him a great safety either. He's a good safety. He's the quarterback of the defense. I get it. But let's not go overboard and say Jim Leonard's great. He's the fucking best player on the field at any time ever to play the game. And he's out. We are never going to win another game. Alright, I've said it now. So what do you thought? So in Replacing him, Eric Smith, that's the problem. The problem isn't that he's out. Justin: Eric Smith's been playing though. So it's not like Eric Smith's replacing him. Jake: I think it's more broadening pool than Eric Smith. play more. Well one guy's got to be the play car now right? So I don't see why that's the case is that is that true? Yes there's one guy on the field with the green dot on the back of his helmet. So why is it gonna be Eric Smith and not like Bart Scott? Because Bart Scott hasn't been doing it for two years that's not his job that's not the way they are. That's like saying why doesn't the running back call the plays in the huddle? That's not true. Well yeah it is. Usually middle linebackers call the plays. Usually my stance but Jim Leonard is the guy who doesn't he's the one so Eric Smith's the guy who's gonna be calling on the place We're fucked. Is that true? That's that's the list. Are you making that up? I'm making up everything at this point My name isn't really Jay because Eric Smith really is yeah, your name really isn't I know Justin: But I mean that's pretty sad and scary. Yeah, that's why I'm a little worse So you're gonna see a little more Eric Smith. You can see more broadie pull Jake: You know, you're gonna see you're gonna see some more maybe Lowry playing safety I think well he was injured So he's coming back from an injury You know, I like what Rex is saying, you know, this is not this is not excuses. No But this certainly is a is it is a hit if not Justin: Every team deals with injuries true the teams that win at the end of the day are the ones with usually the least Entries because most of the time when you're really injured you don't you don't you can't get to like that next level that that All the way kind of thing and the Jets have been Somewhat lucky. I know they were missing Rebus early in the year. They missed his chain pays for a couple of Jenkins You can sort of write that in as that Lost who are we but I think that they've been Relatively lucky in the scheme of things when you look at some of the some of the other You know really good teams like the Steelers are just completely You know, they lost their best defensive lineman. They've lost a bunch of offensive linemen You look at other teams around the league. They've been bitten by injuries. It's sort of the thing that happened. So We've been relatively lucky and up to this point now we're missing, you know, two starters on defense with Jenkins and Leonard out But I think For the most part, we've been, you know, all five offensive linemen have played at Woody's a little banged up, but we'll see. But if we, if I said to you at the beginning of the Jake: season, you're gonna lose two of the keys to you. And again, I think the difference... Well, if you told me... The difference between Leonard and Jenkins is that last year
01 Jake: during our run to the playoffs and into the playoffs... Jenkins was out anyway, and we did without him. Well. Yeah, we did with Leonard Jenkins is gonna be out for the year Justin: I'd say okay, and You're telling me news like yeah, no duh like no shit. He'll be out by game five I'll bet on it and he's out by play six. Yeah, so Okay, but Leonard. Yeah, he's a bigger bigger piece because he was one of the guys that Rex brought with him from Baltimore to Bring in the culture that he created at Baltimore and and knows the offense or sorry knew the system knew the defense Obviously, he did he called the plays. So someone else will have to step up and we'll see if It's a tough game to have to do that because Brady will pick you apart. He'll see things and he's really good quarterback. Like he's very smart. He'll he'll see they aren't communicating properly there or this or that. And I can imagine that you'll see, you know, a big play somewhere for a tight end down the middle of the field that. Wouldn't have happened because the coverage was wrong or something like that I don't anticipate any of their receivers actually getting vertical deep on us But I could see a tight end like Hernandez splitting the middle and or Gronkowski getting a big 30 40 yard catch down the middle Whatever it sucks Even with Leonard in, we weren't great at covering the middle of the field, so... That's true. I can't imagine it getting too much worse. But it can't get better. It's not going to get better. Jake: So, you know, definitely time for someone else to step up. I hope they do. Justin: Hopefully it won't affect the run defense. Jake: So, now we're going to talk about picks. We're going to do our picks. We're going to do our two picks and we're going to do them over. This is me doing our picks. Well, the same picks. You actually changed one. I changed one. done. And I'm allowed and I've already lost one so that's already good and I'm already beating you We could talk who did the best last week me. Did you win the week? Oh the whole week Yeah, oh no, not me and Mike still winning. You're still winning. I'm still winning that wheel last week Justin: Mike was way Mike is still winning. Obviously. He's he's running away with it. He has 97 and I think I'm I'm in second. I think I'd 89 but last week JK Matt longtime fan had 10 so he won the week Mike myself and the Hun and peg all tied with eight and you were down there with six So I'm actually pulling away from you again. Yeah, but I'll catch up and we said all that before and I want to Jake: Yeah, you're not gonna catch up. I will catch up You're not. So let's get into the picks. Alright, let's get into the picks. We do two types of picks every week. We pick the Jet Kingdom pickup, which is every game with the spread, but we avoid the AFC East, which we then go in depth when we call it thrown picks. When we go in depth, pick the scores for the AFC East. We have three AFC matchups this week, and one being the big game. So now it's up to Justin to lead us through the Jet Kingdom pickup with the spread, and we will name it. that I practice this because there are like two Justin: AFC East matchups in a row that I almost stumbled on last time.
04 Justin: So it's good to be back. Well, the first game already happened and Philly cover, they beat Houston by more than eight. I had that you did not. Jake: I did not think they would cover. Again, Houston is usually good at keeping games close. Justin: Houston did exactly what they always do, which is what we said when they played. Start shitty, catch up, get the lead and then lose. And then lose. That's exactly what they did against the Jets. That's exactly what they always do. Jake: Their coach needs to be fired. So here's, you know, we talked about this a little bit offline. Michael Vick is an incredible player, but he's not going to make the season. That guy has taken hits that, I mean, that would knock out most quarterbacks. And he, I saw him limping around on the He keeps playing like that. They played the Giants what once more one more time I think I don't think he'll play for that entire Giants beat up on people. So anyway, let's move on. Yep, so Justin: Alrighty, New Orleans heads to Cincinnati these two teams both played on Thanksgiving Day in an hour 15 minutes. Yeah It's pretty awesome And they both had the long rest. It was at like 12, 13 day rest there between games. So this is one of two matchups this week, the Jets and the Pats also both play on Thanksgiving. So it's an interesting thing. Cincinnati bottom three in the league, I think I would bet on. I think Cincinnati... Carolina, maybe Arizona are the worst three teams. So I'll take New Orleans giving six and a half. Jake: Yeah, I'll take New Orleans, take giving six and a half. They're at home, New Orleans generally plays better at home and Cincinnati in the cold and the wind is normally, but still taken by a touchdown. Justin: All right, then we have Chicago in the NFC North Battle going to Detroit. This was the game I flipped. I originally had Detroit getting three and a half from Chicago But then I learned that Drew Stanton will be starting for Detroit. So I flipped that to Chicago I will give the three and a half to Detroit. I will take Chicago. Yeah, I'm taking I'm taking Chicago the best worst team Jake: We're the worst best team. Alrighty Justin: Green Bay hosts San Francisco, which is where we are. Right, but they're not here. But they're not here. They're in Green Bay. They're in Lambo. Jake: And Green Bay's giving 9.5. I'm gonna take Green Bay. Yeah, I think they're gonna beat up. Frank Gore... Out for the season? Out. Brian Westbrook. So, all you fantasy people, make that switch. I'll take Green Bay to win by at home against San Francisco by more than 9.5 points. Tennessee hosts Jacksonville and this game is off. Justin: There's no line on this game. I imagine that there might be one now, but as of Thursday when they make their final lines for this Yahoo pool. There was no line. I bet that's because they're not sure if Kerry Collins is gonna start or rusty Rusty nail or the trusty trombone is gonna start for Tennessee and Kenny Britt might also be back for Tennessee
06 Justin: Seeing as the line is off. I'm gonna take Jacksonville even though they're on the road I think they're the better team between these two Jake: What do you think? Um, I was actually just trying to see if there was a line on it And I cannot wait. Oh, where's Jacksonville? Hey, this is a podcast. Yeah, three points Justin: Well, I don't care and our thing it's Jacksonville So I'm taking Jacksonville. It's off since you're allowed to switch on the switch that I'm supposed to Jacksonville Jake: I had Tennessee, but I was hoping that the line would be Whatever, but since it's a flat out, I'll take checks for the one. Justin: Alright, Kansas City in a grudge match against Denver. Kansas City got the butts kicked the last time they played Denver and I think they're gonna kick some butt back. So, Kansas City's home, they play way better at home. They're given 8.5, Jake: I think they'll win by 13. Wow, it's a lot, but yeah I think Denver's a crap team into cancer. It's a really good home. I'll take cancer. Justin: All right, moving right along. We got the G-Men. The Giants are hosting Washington in the NFC battle. NFC battle. hour and 15 minutes away. Starting very shortly. The Giants are home giving seven. I think that's a lot to give. Seeing as though they're still a little banged up. I will take Washington getting seven. Jake: Oh, that's the first difference. I'll take the Giants. I don't think that Washington's crap. Donald Mab's crap. Justin: I think the Giants will win the game. I just don't think they'll win by seven. I think they'll win. San Diego hosts Oakland. San Diego's red hot right now. Oakland is cold. They are not hot anymore. They were. That's the opposite of hot. I think they've lost two or three in a row and now played very well at all in any of them. San Diego's giving 13, and I think it's a blowout. I'll take San Diego. Jake: Not going to be that. It's not going to be a blowout. I'll take Oakland. They're inter-conference, inter-vision. They'll play a really tight game. I don't think so. Justin: All right, Indy hosting Dallas. They've lost two in a row, Indy. and they just lost their last home game, they're giving 5.5 and I cannot imagine 3 in a row losses, I can't imagine 3 in a row bad outings by Peyton Manning and Dallas, we have to remember is really not that good, so I'm gonna take Indy giving the 5.5 Jake: Time for the pass butchers, the Indy pass butchers to step up and kill some kidna, I'll take Indy Justin: Killing kidna, alrighty Moving right along st. Louis Heads to Arizona Arizona one of those really really bad teams st. Louis on the road not always very good but giving three and Just cuz Arizona is so bad. I'm gonna take st. Louis They're fighting for that division title right now at five and six definitely takes a loss five and six Jake: Alright, see I'm talking about a losing record hosting a playoff team Justin: They should just eliminate there should be a rule change You have to have at least eight might have to be eight and eight to make the playoffs. Otherwise, sorry. Yeah
01 Jake: We joke about this every year, you know, it's like oh, I can't believe a 9-7 although we were not gonna make the playoffs I was a wild card though. Yeah, that's okay Justin: Yeah, you should Seven and nine team a should never win a division and then be they shouldn't if you're gonna have to make the playoffs fine But don't let them host the game like they should be penalized in some way Jake: But some eleven and five team shouldn't have to go to a seven and nineteen. It's the way it works I don't care so what then if they're really that bad team the eleven five team will go and beat the crap out of them And I'll be done Alright. Anyway, Seattle's hosting Carolina. Carolina's awful. See I was not too good either but I'll take them at home given six. Very inconsistent team, but I'll take Seattle at home. Justin: Big matchup in the AFC, or I'm sorry in the NFC South. Atlanta heads to Tampa. These are two of the better teams in the NFC. Atlanta's giving three on the road. Don't like them on the road. I will take Tampa at home, knocking Atlanta off the throne. I'll take Atlanta. on the road they'll cover by three. Okay and then the big Sunday night matchup which is a great one Baltimore hosts Pittsburgh. Rafflesperger in a boot apparently it was reported that he had broken foot but he doesn't have a broken foot whatever he's injured Baltimore is giving three. I have a feeling they're gonna target that foot They're gonna they're gonna get after Raffles burger early make him try and move so not gonna be able to I will take Baltimore Jake: I like Baltimore at home in this game. They beat Baltimore beat Pittsburgh earlier in season, but without Ben Raffles burger I don't know Ben Raffles burger this heard with I think the missing some players on the offensive line. Justin: Oh they are, they're missing their O line. Jake: So this is what I think you'll see a rivalry of defense. I don't think it'll be high scoring but you know it could it'll be like a maybe a 15-10 win Baltimore wins. 15 huh? That's interesting. Okay. Alright. AFC East. Alright let's get to the that was our check kingdom pick up now let's talk about our It's the Rome picks, which is where we pick the AFC each match-ups and give points and do a little bit more In-depth analysis and we have three this week. Yep starting with Cleveland heads to Miami Wow, the man genius returns So Miami very bad at home this year. It's won one game the way most of games on the road not good They're not good. They're fighting for some sort of playoff something, but it's gonna be a hard sell. Justin: It's gonna be very, very difficult for them to get in when you consider in the AFC you have the Jets and the Pats on top of Miami's division. And then you have Baltimore and Pittsburgh. That's four right there. And then the other two division winners, that's sick. Jake: Right, but Miami plays both Jess and Pat again. They're going to have to win out. Yeah, they are. Justin: And hope for luck that someone else loses. This is also the first time in a month that Miami's had the same starting quarterback
00 Justin: and back to back games. Wow, that's a good stat. Thank you. I pulled that one right out of the butt. And I think on the road, Cleveland, Cleveland travels. They run the ball. They play solid defense. I think they'll confuse Chad Henny. I like Cleveland to win 23-10 in a Peyton Hillis Jake: romp. I think that the Dolphins last week figured out again what the team they what they are and they went back to the team they were Right. They are what they were which is they are a wildcat. They are a wildcat run ball You know confuse things use Ricky and Ronnie who are you know again older but still can do it I think they'll be able to I think they'll be able to win I think they'll win their second game at home. I think it'll be 2320 dolphins win. That's why I'm picking Cleveland to cover Good for you, I don't know Justin: Buffalo the best to a 19 league travels to Minnesota who I think is what, four and seven maybe? Yeah, they're done. To face the far and Leslie Frazier. I think Buffalo can win this game. I think that they are coming off of a very emotional loss where they really should have won. Stevie Johnson blew that game for them. Jake: Why so serious? He blamed God. Yeah, we talked about that in the last podcast that's now never be heard. Oh, we had like a good two minute rant on Stevie Johnson. Justin: Anyway, moving right along. Don't drop passes. I think Buffalo will win this game 16-13. I think Buffalo will win too. Peterson is questionable. Questionable. So they might have Toby Gerhart toting the rock for them. Jake: So I think Buffalo is going to play tough and I think they're going to win it. I was Justin: Now moving on to the game of the millennium! Jake: Boop boop boop! Justin: I wish I knew what's higher than a millennium. Like, what's the 10,000? Yeah, the game of the 10,000 years! Jake: This is the game that, you know, again, it's hard doing this podcast because we've always done this podcast. Justin: We always say the game of the millennium. But this one, this one is hyped like it's the game of the millennium. Everyone's waiting for this game. Jake: My comment last time was that on ESPN's ticker, on the scrolling ticker, they usually have the lead, MLB, NHL, NFL. They actually have their, since Monday, since last Monday, they've had their own NYJ slash New York. So constantly, their own ticker item.
01 Jake: on the bottom ESPN. ESPN is hyping this game out of belief. It's a good game to Justin: hype. It's a division rival. It's the two top teams in the AFC. It is the, you know, they both have the best record in the in the whole conference. They have a marquee Brady Brady quarterback. They have a young Sanchez. They have the two head coaches. One who has a phenomenal personality and the other who's like the best head coach for the last 10 years in the league. So They have a really, and they have a natural rivalry. It's a really, it's a very good prime time football week. It's the Sunday night and the Monday night games are phenomenal. Sorry to CBS, you lost two good ones there. Uh, really worthy of the hype. Hopefully the game, you know... uh meets the hyper at least you know i don't care if it's a blot as long as the jets win but people seem to think it's gonna be like this epic battle game um hopefully it isn't hopefully the jets just win 42 to 3 i mean that'd be cool that's your prediction no so patriots it would be Jake: cool though some weird weird or interesting stats about the game pagers don't lose at home they Justin: They don't lose at home when Brady starts. Right. Sorry, Brady's starting. They don't lose in December at home either. Jake: Tom Brady hasn't thrown a pick in some amazing amount of games. They're scoring a ton of points on defenses. But the Jets have won three of the last four meetings against the Patriots. That's crazy talk. Crazy talk. Justin: Yeah, they won this year. And then I guess they won last year once and then the one just before that. Jake: So that's the thing is the three of the four last matchups and in the second half of the first game, early in the season, the Jets really were able to shut them down. Different Patriots team this time. And I say different Jets defense this time. The defense is better than it was on week two. We have Reavis back full steam. He got hurt in that game. He's now back full steam. I think some of the position players have gotten better. We have pace back. So we can have a little bit. We have homes for the defensive side. So give me your keys to the castle in this game. You can pick offensive or defense. Give me one. Justin: I think when we did this the first time I picked a Offensive key to the castle. Okay, I kind of want to switch to defense now that Leonard's out But you want me to all right, I'll switch to defense now that Leonard's out. So I alluded to it earlier We have to be able to stop their tight ends they have three tight ends that all play they wind up in a three tight end set a lot. Two rookies who are both playing very well. Hernandez and Gronkowski and then they have Algae Crumpler who you know is more of a blocker at this point but can catch the ball out of the backfield or out of the tie down position if they throw it to him. So I think it will be very
03 Justin: important with Jim Leonard out to control that aspect of the Patriots game because what they like to do is get into... third and twos and second and fours and and throw these passes over the middle and just control sort of control the game in that way and then all of a sudden bam hernandez down the middle for 30 or bam gronkowski over the middle for 25 30 uh so i think a key will be the safety play and how we can control the middle of the field because What I'd like to see is is Revas on Welker. Just match him up. I don't care if Welker's in the slot, I don't care if he's outside, I don't care. And then throw Cromartie on like the on branch. And I think you'll be okay there. It's gonna be the middle of the field that where the safety's in the and the linebackers and maybe a nickel. maybe you'll see Coleman on Hernandez or something like that. Jake: But that to me is the key, controlling those tight ends. Yeah, so on offense, for the offense for the Jets, we've been proving that we can score late. We've been proving that we've got great receivers, make big plays. I want two things to happen in this offense. And the key to me is not to overthink this. for Schottenheimer. I think Schottenheimer is a guy with too much time. He has too much time. He kind of does this. You know, I know that you know that I know that you know that I know that you know that you're going to do that place. I'm going to do the other play. And I'm sorry Bill Belichick is smarter than you. I like Schottie, but I just want to come out and play Jets football and Jets football is ground and pound. On the road, in a hostile environment, I want them to play Jets football. I want them to have really dedicated running to take up nine minute drives to keep Brady off the field and not to get too tricky. Sure, sprinkle in a Brad Smith play here or there. But I really want them to be the team that they are. And I think if they control the clock, keep Brady off. And, you know, I think they're going to score. I think the Patriots are going to score. We have to keep up with them. But I just don't want this to be an overthinking of the game, overthinking of the plays, and doing stuff that isn't in our nature to win the game. I think this is a big Sean Green game. I just... I think he's gonna need to obviously not fumble the ball, but just to pound through these guys. You know, they got a really young defense. They've got some young corners. They're giving up a lot of plays. There's gonna be shots down the field and you know, that's that's great for us because that's our kind of our thing. It's pound pound shot, pound pound across the middle, pound pound, you know, Dustin Keller. I think that's what you picked in your last one was that Dustin Keller have a big game. With Kachri back, you know, I think the Jets have every shot to win this game.
03 Jake: If you just went without the rival, without the hype, without everything, you just matched it up. We have a good defense who can keep teams from scoring a lot of points. They have a defense that doesn't seem to be able to do that, and we can score points. So if you just match those two things up, I think the numbers show that we can win this game. But then you throw the rivalry, you throw the Jim Leonard, you throw the in the Patriots land, and you feel the build bell check craziness It's a great game. I don't you know it's gonna be hard sitting through all these games today that started now 59 minutes and not be thinking about the Jets game the entire time But we'll have to get to the day so give me a prediction for the game. Oh We didn't do that. Yeah. No. Oh, all right Jets win 31 24 Jets win 3127 it's funny. We've never picked a Jets loss So by our picking, they should really be 11 and 0 at this point. Oh, they're 9 and 2. We're not off by that much. Justin: She'll go back. Didn't we record what we actually picked? Maybe we'll do that in the next podcast when we have a little bit more time in leeway. Next podcast will be the 3 Quarters season podcast. So we'll give some grades and stuff. Jake: Absolutely.
