09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way. Get away from me! Jake: Three, two, one, go! Five, four, three, two, one. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast. the longest running New York Jets podcast ever. My name is Jake. Joining me for the 157th time. It's getting ridiculous amount of numbers. Is my good friend Justin. Justin, how are you doing today? Doing great. Thank you very much for asking, sir. Justin: How is the life of a broadcaster? You know, doing my thing, broadcasting. Jake: Yeah, okay. Well, it's back. We have some actual football to talk about. Now we do have football, we have news, we have hard knocks to talk about. We have a game. Well, something. We have a game. We have a game. We have another game coming up. which you're just quickly gonna put onto the agenda. And then we have the Jet Kingdom fantasy league, we have the entrance, we have four people to announce, leaving us with four more spots. And we then will answer at the end of the podcast, we'll answer all the tweets and Facebook questions that we got today. So let's get into it, cause we got a lot. Let's first talk about the preseason game. Yeah. Let's jump right into it. Yeah, so I saw half of what I wanted to see. Justin: So you saw TiVo? No, I didn't care about that. I saw half of it. I saw the defense play pretty well. Jake: So I'll tell you a couple of things. So let's overall... There's always a theory and I bring this up every year and I'm gonna bring it up every year that I podcast or do Anything that I can people listen to me Winning preseason games is useless. There's no point to winning them is not about winning It's not about anything other than getting your team ready and the winning is not getting hurt The only way you win a preseason game is you walk away with the same players as you did before. How well you play, what the offense looks like, what the defense looks like. There is so much stuff going on that the average fan, me, maybe not you broadcasters, but us fans, they're not throwing out, they're not putting in, especially that first game, it's just throwing in a bunch of vanilla stuff they've been working on for a couple weeks. It's not the complex plans. It's not even what they're going to do. In fact, there's some say that there's even a agreement between coaches that you won't go and sort of go crazy because we're just playing some preseason here. With that said though, didn't you think the defense looked pretty good? So with that said... I watched the full game and I watched highlights.
02 Jake: As did I. And then I went back and watched a highlight of a particular player. There's a highlight package. Justin: I know who you're talking about. And watching this. Well, I actually don't know who you're talking about. Jake: The highlight package of this guy was like I was impressed. It was interesting watching just him in every single place. There was a player on defense that was very impressive. Justin: So it was the number one pick. It was Quentin Copples. He was... He was dominant when he was playing in like the second third quarter against like I guess backups, but he looked real good. Jake: Yeah, I know he was pretty what I liked is every time off the line he pushed people out of the way and the end they started just double team them. They couldn't take them. He was all over the place. He was knocking balls down. He was hitting the quarterback. He was hitting guys behind in line scrimmage. He was good. He looked good. It gave me a chubby. Gave me a little chubby. It's like really yeah, I was like, oh, this is the thing when he knocked up We knocked down the quarterback. Oh, please do that to Brady. Please do that to Brady lay in the season It gave me a little bit of like our front sevens pretty deep. I'm I'm a little bit excited about the defense Justin: I'm telling you this is a number one. This is a number one Caliber defense this defense has the ability, it has the playmakers, and it has the right guys at the right positions with the depth to be a number one defense. It really does. Right. With three corners we have a front seven. We have guys who can get to the quarterback. I really really really feel like this is a This is a defense that's going to be hard to run on and hard to throw on. Jake: I agree. And, you know, if we want to do, if the Jeff fans want to get all worried, because that's what we love to do, just being Jeff fans, you know, the other thing is, this is going to be, we're going to need a great defense because our offense isn't going to be able to do anything. Right? So the defense looks good. I'm excited about it. It's like you have Rex Ryan, you know he's going to put together a good defense. He's going to put together a top five defense. He's going to. Is it going to be number one? I don't care. Is it going to be number two? Like one, two, three, four? Doesn't matter to me. I want it to be one of those suffering defenses that just takes people out of games. Then you flip the ball over and you're like, okay, time to look at our offense. Now granted, Keller didn't play. homes. Didn't play Lots that's basically it. Well, no Justin: Holmes doesn't play She doesn't play that's true. I mean you're you're you're killer. That's three you're you're gonna want to throw the ball He's throwing a Turner right? That's like the big weapon right Turner and that means you know you can't you can't get the running game going because you have to cover anybody and Just it's not a that's the offense wasn't a good indication But I was listening to an interview this morning or yesterday morning or whenever it was Damien woody was was on the former jet for Pat He likes to shoot on the jet once Sometimes. I think he's fair. I think he's fair. Sometimes I think he takes a big dump on us. He's fair. He was saying, you know, they were talking about the Jets and they were saying, you know,
04 Justin: they have no firepower on offense. And while the whole, the entire league is going one way, the Jets are going another way. Meaning the whole league is meant for passing. Yep, and the Jets don't have... They're going the other way. They're trying to run ground and pound, bringing the T-Bowl package to the Wildcat, and then Woody had a really... very, you know, very insightful statement where he said... when you're in that room and you're listening to your coaches and you're preparing for that week, right, and he was saying it from the offensive perspective he's like you know there's always a guy or two that you need to know where he is and really really prepare for him and he was like you know But the Jets on defense, you know, you think of like a DeMarcus Ware, like, like, that's a guy you would prepare for. Like, he's an offensive player. He's an offensive lineman. So he's saying, you know, a DeMarcus Ware, right? A guy that we had to know where he was, or like a Dwight Freene, like, like these types of guys. You know, yeah, like playmakers, Calvin Johnson, right? They have not one of these guys on their offense where the other team's defense has to really even be aware like like you know hey any extra special attention to any i think that's i think that's a little rough i totally agree with him there's not one guy on the jets that you have to worry about no i don't really think there's one special guy that you there's no guy on that team that you have to specifically game plan to stop Well, I'll give you three. And you're gonna be wrong, so go ahead. Jake: I can't be wrong. I'm... This is my opinion. Can't be wrong. Go ahead. I'll give it from the ones that you probably know and then the ones that you're gonna be like, Yeah, right. First of all, I think Holmes is a threat. You're right that by himself, he is not the Calvin Johnson. He's not Calvin Johnson. But he is a threat. He's got very good hands. He can break away. He's not got huge speed. But he's a threat. He can catch the ball. And he has one game solely by himself with catches in the end zone. He's a threat. He's an MV. He's a...wait, let me talk. Try to let me talk. See if you can let that happen. Yeah. No. So... Yes, so then there's him. He's a Super Bowl MVP wide receiver, still in his prime. He's a threat. He's in his prime, he had 650 yards last year. Yeah, that's last year. And he played every game. Yeah, that's last year. Okay, next, Stephen Hill. He's a threat. He's this big, fast guy. He's got huge speed, huge guy. And yeah, is he a threat now because he's a rookie? No. But could he be something huge? Everybody's like, oh, he doesn't have enough experience. If he's asked to do that thing, I'll tell you. Here's the thing. He'll have one game this season where he's going to do something that people are like, oh, you're going to need to cover that guy.
01 Jake: Right? That's all that needs to happen for him to be a 3. He's not a big threat because he hasn't played in the NFL yet. But he could be a huge threat. And then here's the one that no one wants to hear. I don't even want to say it because it makes me want to puke. Tebow, Tebow is a big threat. He's the guy you're gonna be there. The defense is gonna be going, we need to worry about this. And it's Tebow in that package. When he's on the field, it's going to be like, what the fuck are they gonna do? And that's a threat. It's a threat. It worked against us last year, top five defense. He beat many many teams with that. And now we're gonna be throwing him into a situation where he doesn't even always have to be there. So you don't have to worry. The thing with T-ball was you didn't have to worry about him throwing the ball, you just had to worry about those special situations. Well now we have a quarterback who I believe is going to do well and throw the ball very well and then you're going to throw in the T-ball guy who's going to be like, oh here's a wrinkle, how are we going to game plan for that? I think that is a threat and I think that's why they brought him in. Again, as a player, I'm excited about him. All the hype about him, I'm not excited about, but I'm excited about the player and the possibilities of what TonyS-B who took a. Who took a bunch of nothings. Let me name you some players that are not still in the league. Ronnie Brown, oh sorry, he's somewhere now, but whatever, he was a nobody last year. Ricky Williams, retired. Chad Pennington. Here you know what those three people have it. Oh and Tony Sperano, you know those people have in common They won the AFC East using the Wildcat they won, let me say it, in the era of Tom Brady and and Whatever. They won the AFC East When did the Jets ever won the AFC East? So if Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown, and Chad Pennington can win the AFC East Why can't Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, Sean Green, and Reavis? Why can't we win the AFCs? First off, those guys were in their prime. Justin: At the time? Absolutely. Chad Penta was not in his prime at the time. But Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams were. They were, no. No, Ricky Williams wasn't. That was like five years ago. Yeah, but Ricky Williams was not in his prime. That was like five years ago. Ricky Williams was in his prime. The league was very different then. You didn't have. You Five quarterbacks throwing for 5,000 yards five years ago. So true. Okay, that's the first thing second thing I couldn't disagree with you more about Holmes. He's he's not He's not that guy. Sorry, like you just look at the numbers and he's they're not there Jake: He's not that guy. Then I then I hope that the defense I hope the defense that whatever we're playing Patriots, dealers, I hope they sit around there like, fuck I'm gonna do it. We don't have to worry about homes. I hope so too. Because then, put your third, put a safety on him. Justin: But if he is the guy that you have to worry about, right? And if he's the best receiver you got, and then the rest of them are just a second round rookie. Yeah. Right? So he wasn't a first round rookie. He was projected to go in the first. He went in second. Projected, preshmected.
00 Justin: When was he picked? He was picked in second round. Right. So you got that you got Chad Shulens a cast off from Oakland who is a seventh round pick Yep, you got curly who I think actually can be pretty decent, but can't get on the field right you got Patrick Turner like these guys no one throw no one to everybody else is going the other way Yeah, and we're running the ball, and I think you're spot on The T-bow thing is it. That's our... that's our... that's our wrinkle. That's our... we do that ten times a game and throw people off. And it's enough. But again, there really is no scary guy on that jet's office. But I... listen, I can name a lot of team... alright. Jake: Give me the scary guy... You'd be hard pressed. Give me the scary guy on... um... thank you. Okay, so scary guy you would say on the bills is Stevie Johnson. He's scary. Justin: Yeah, he's better than anyone we got. And, and not to me, it's not only Stevie Johnson, they have four receivers out there. So Stevie Johnson's better than Holmes, and the rest of their receivers are better than any of our others. Oh, come on. Absolutely. Oh my god. Jake: I hope people just turn this podcast off. Don't listen to the rest of this. Justin: They know I'm right. No. Jake: Uh. Cut. So a question for you. Yeah? If this is the truth, and if this is the way this season's gonna happen... Justin: I mean, think of any team! Name another team, I'll go through it with ya. Jake: Miami Dolphins. Justin: Reggie Bush is scarier than anyone we have. Oh, please! Why? Reggie Bush is scarier... Wide receivers! What are the scary wide receivers? But Reggie Bush is a guy you have to game plan for. You just don't have- Jake: You have no wide receivers, you don't have the game plan for anybody. Absolutely you do. You stack the box every single time. Who are they going to throw to? We don't have anyone as good as Reggie Bush on our offense. Reggie Bush. Right. We don't have anybody as good as Reggie Bush. Name one. I think Holmes is better than Reggie Bush. Justin: I disagree. As a player. Couldn't, disagree more. Wow, wow that is wrong. Our offense is pretty abysmal and it sucks because Sanchez is gonna get red skins. They just got Pierre Garcon, they have Santana Moss. Jake: Santana Moss. But you put guys together. But wait a second, you can do that on one and then do that on the jet. then put guys together we don't have guys to put together Dustin Keller and and homes and and and Stephen Hill you put them together and we've got Hills never played a game. So what and And sent him a whole Santana Santana. He's played way too many games and he's basically been hurt every other season now No, yes, he has no how many touchdowns if he have what do homes last year fine homes had Justin: 654 yards. Yes, okay. I'm gonna find And find this moss character here Have to use this frickin website Santana.
02 Justin: How do I spell? How do I spell Santana? He had 584 yards and four touchdowns. Jake: And that's less than Holmes. Right. Okay. I have a question for you. I mean, why are we not signing Plexigal back? Because he clearly is a cancer. So he's because he's a cancer because he's the cancer in the off thing. Okay clear. Why didn't we go after Mike Wallace? Justin: Why don't we give up first round for him next year first round? So what I don't know Maybe maybe they maybe they were sick and tired of picking up all these Steelers Retreads anytime you go grab a stealer you get fucked. No, we went to the AFC Championship with that fucked Jake: that fucked guys. I think you're way too down on this. Anywho, I just feel like if that's really the case, then why are we not, I mean, Braille and Edward's okay fine. I feel like we screwed up there. That should have been the guy. But he's, do you know where he is in the depth chart? Over in, is he in Seattle, right? Seattle has better receivers than we do. He's literally like fourth and fifth. He's like, he's deep. Justin: I personally think they screwed up last year. They shouldn't have let Braylon go and they shouldn't let Kottree go and that should have been the three. Those three worked really well together. And that scares people. Kottree. Yeah, Kottree, Edwards, and Holmes is far better than what we have today. Oh, it's probably what we have today, yes. But I think that Hills has... And last year, I was like, oh, I think, you know, Curly and Plaxico, I was wrong. Jake: Well, Plaxico had a good season. An okay season. Yeah, a good season. Okay. Better than Moss. He had seven touchdowns. He had eight touchdowns. Eight touchdowns. Fantastic. That's not a bad season. Yeah, yeah. That's a good season. If Stephen Hill has eight touchdowns this season, we will all be blowing our wads on the proverbial, you know, Jets day. Justin: I just don't think we got the weapons on offense. I don't think we have all of them yet. What we really need from our offense is our offensive line to be explosive, blow people off the ball, protect and allow us to run for 2,000 yards. Maybe more than 2,000 yards. Might have to run for more than 2,000 yards. Jake: Aren't you worried that we don't have the personnel to run for over 2,000 yards unless T-Boe's running half of it? Justin: Yeah, because I feel like Sean Green can run for over a thousand yards. McKnight and Powell can each run for maybe 300 each so right there. Let's just say you get like last year Sean Green ran for Over a thousand yards, right? I don't even feel like he had his best what he can really get to I don't like he could run for I don't think he can't know I don't think I do if he ran for 1050 last year do you think he had like a really good year? No, don't you think he could have done better? Jake: I know I kind of my stock on him is going down. It's not see I feel like he could have done better than he did last year. Justin: So let's just give him what he did. Let's just say 1100. Okay, 1100. Okay, so I mean last year the Jets ran for 1700 yards. Right. So you're missing 300 and I feel like you add Tebow
01 Justin: You lose Le Daniean? And that package. Yeah, well you lose Le Daniean's 280 yards, but you throw McKnight and Powell in there and you gain it back plus some. And then you throw in Tebow's yards. Jake: You got 300 yards out of Tebow. At least, yeah. Probably do. You do. I mean, yeah. So there's your thing. There's your offense and the one that they're not gonna show us in preseason They're not gonna show it. They've actually you know that they've actually they made the media not talk about their wildcat package Like they they made them not watch it. No, I'm watching it. No, and they couldn't report on it. Good Yeah, that's not for them to reflect with the smartest thing that's happened so far All right. So anything else we'll talk about this game anything else you saw in the game that you're interested in Justin: well, there was there was Tebow's weird, like watching him play quarterback under center. It's a little scary. Like I don't feel like he actually, like I feel like he's a step behind. Like he takes his sweet time getting that ball from the center. It's a weird, it doesn't look fluid to me. No. Just odd. Like he should just always be in the... in. in the shotgun, always. And there was one noticeable play early on that, you know, Stephen Hill, he hadn't won an ice catch, but then there was like a third and six or third and seven, and he ran like an eight-yard pattern, open, T-Bo hits him right in the face, and he drops it. Yeah. And that's what I'm worried about. Like, the guy's not a receiver yet. And that's like the thing is like, dude, third and seven to pick it up. You gotta catch that ball. And that's what I'm worried about. We don't have enough guys that can get open. Jake: And then if they get open, we'll actually catch it. I'm not worried about them actually catching in a game. I mean... Again, he's a rookie. That was a game. He dropped it. He's a rookie. He's going to have some moments of brilliance, and he's going to have some moments of just like, really? Again, I expect out of him, what do we make the bet? I don't even forget now. I said 30 catches for 500 yards. And that's what I said. That's what I said, three. Yeah, I think if we get to the five touchdowns off of him, I'll be very happy. Again, my prediction is Dustin Keller. Dustin Keller's gonna have an amazing year. He's gonna have an amazing year. Hope so. He had a great year last year. He's gonna have a better year. He did a good year last year. He's gonna have a better year. He's gonna be used more and more. Justin: He's supposed to. The tight ends are supposed to now have really good years. Jake: And with this offense... The rules are like made for tight ends. That's right. And with this offense it's gonna be... T. Bill can throw to kid throw to killer. That's it Justin: Anything else about the game are I didn't think are like our I? guess second and third Defensive backs looked very good now They were a lot of like kind of getting burnt yeah there cuz we were trying to blitz and you know We're getting some pressure, but then like brood Bruce Gragkowski's got like, you know, he's man. He's got some guy you never heard of manned up on right on and
03 Justin: You know, there's no coverage there. I didn't I didn't really like to see that but other than that I mean whatever preseason game so it's like hard to tell. Yeah, it's like we're watching a scrimmage and this point I think it is a scrimmage. I don't think game one is totally like let's try not to get hurt guys Game two's a little bit more game three's address rehearsal, right? And game four is a nobody's plan who's gonna actually be on the team. Well, it's a lot of people trying to make the team. Yeah, right. Jake: All right, so let's move on. Other things, other things in the news and our round robin. As you watch the game, have you... First time in history? Justin: That a female? Actually, that wasn't even what I was gonna talk. I was like, did you notice or Even care that there were replacement referees? Like did you notice it at all? Jake: I mean other than everybody talking about it and other than that huge mistake they made in Buffalo I didn't even see that. I didn't see it, but I am heard about it You know, I don't I don't really care about the replacements until they make a mistake and then the whole world's gonna collide so I think I think this is something they need to bring they need to get settled because If one big game is decided because of a really bad call blatantly horrible call Justin: That's not gonna be good. Yeah, but that I mean that that's the that's kind of a fucked up part is because Games get decided by really bad calls every year. But then every single year there's blatantly awful calls. Right. Not by replacement referees. By the real ones. What happens to a week? As opposed to one a year. It's happened in the Super Bowl. I mean that Steelers Super Bowl that they when they see the Seahawks was brutal. Yeah. I mean that's the biggest game of the year and you got. Refs fucking that game up. I remember the the when the Jets beat the the Seahawks when Vinnie Was like a yard and a half away from the goal line and they called it a touchdown I mean that was I mean great we benefited on that one But I mean the games all the time that mean things they get below calls blown left right center nobody knows how to call pass interference anymore so it's a total crapshoot the flag goes up and and then they decide who they're gonna call it on so like it the Calvin Johnson touchdown two years ago and the ends like games totally get decided by bad refereeing constantly yeah I don't think it's that big of a deal I personally don't give a shit if it's the real refs or the replacement refs I mean I can't imagine that these are refs that have never refereed before. Like, grab some college refs, grab some, Jake: I mean, those guys are pros too, right?
02 Jake: So. I think it just proves that we need to get, my opinion is, for the biggest sport in America, for America's pastime, for the thing that is the biggest. Please don't call it America's pastime. Justin: It is America's pastime. It is not America's pastime. Yeah, it is, it's the number one sport in America. That is different than calling it America's past time. America's past. Please don't call it that. It's not. It is. So don't. It is. Jake: It's not. Anyway for baseball being damn baseball. I think they need to have full-time refs. Just hire people whose job it is to be a ref. Yeah. Not be a fucking lawyer for five days a week or a chimney sweeper or a broadcaster I want you to be a goddamn all you day all you wake up in the morning like I gotta go ref and then you ref ref ref all day long and you sit Justin: every day practices watch some tape watch tape you review the rules you eat your eaties what if they say like they made a game I don't know like eight grand a game or something crazy yeah so turn that into a salary and you're done right Jake: Exactly with this with this league that makes the most money to just figure it out get get real refs hire them Make them real make them accountable to something right as opposed to oh, you're a lawyer Well, I don't like you know, I want them to be accountable. Let's do that Speaking of refs Justin: We got and that's a lot of money $8,000 again. I'm just doing the math turn that into a salary and that's a nice salary. Yeah done Jake: Yeah, and then have a program for it, have an up- the whole thing's easy. Just do it. Just do it. Giants game coming up this Saturday. Justin: Yeah, I wanted to go but I can't go. Well, because you're going to the second- I'm going to the Yankee Red Sox game that day, which is a four o'clock start, and those games are- they take forever. Yankee Red Sox games usually are three and a half. sometimes even four hours, I'll never get to the jet game in time to actually see anybody anybody that is of any relevance so I can't I can't make it I wish I could. I will actually is Jake: I will be at a wedding so this is my two weddings in a row that I'm losing um Any game which all the last time I actually was at home because it because whatever travel plans whatever But I actually watched it at home, and I did enjoy watching the thing on the iPad works great I will be TV owing this so I will be TV owing this to this will be a I'm gonna come back and watch it The next day. I'm gonna try to see if I can get it on because the weddings at someone's house So I feel like if someone's house you know he's like sneak into their room like in a bedroom or whatever York It's in New York Where New York upstate New York a little bit like not far two hours away It'll be on it then it might be on yeah, it'll be on But it's a question of can I like sneak away from the wedding party and be like yeah totally acceptable Justin: I don't think a shit sorry if you're doing a wedding during football you have to deal with the consequences. Yes, so Jake: thoughts on it? I mean this is basically this is the game of the year that we've seen more players get hurt from both sides
05 Jake: That's because it's usually game 3 Ah it's switched now I don't know why they did that I don't know It's weird It's also now turning into this MetLife bowl Justin: They're doing this whole thing on it That's stupid, whatever I could give a crap about that Again keys don't get hurt Don't show them any don't show anybody anything special Nope, there is one thing that I would like to see Marc Sanchez make a touchdown. No, not even that I don't really care Well, I would like to see the offense score a touchdown But I'd like to see Reavis cover Cruz and shut him down as opposed to letting him go for 95 I guess he wasn't on it last time. No, he wasn't yeah, I'd like to see Reavis covering Cruz and I'd like to see Cruz He's just not touched the ball. Right, so Nix won't be back, so their number one is Cruz. Yeah. Nick's won't be back until the end of season. I don't think he's going to be back till the start of the season. So I'd really like to see Revas just blanketing Victor Cruz and not letting Victor Cruz touch the ball. Right. So he's killed us in every game that he's ever played against us. We're only one that's counted, but still, I just don't like the idea of... Victor Cruz Doing that against us. Yeah, and I'd like to see Reavis on him See the running game get going like to see a little bit nice I think it'll be a really nice test for the offensive line because the Giants defensive line is legit real deals Probably one of the best in the league if not the best in the league So it'd be nice to see what they can do What I wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of like showing something is that that jumbo package that we've used over the years because 63 is reporting out double. Yeah, I'd like to see like either do cause or I can't remember his name the other guy who started last no the guy who started last week at right tackle Who's not gonna start this week at right tackle because hunters back Oh, I don't know can't remember his name, but they're saying no Howard. I think he's out. Oh, yeah, like oh he's he's like pretty nimble and he's like 330 pounds he's a big dude he might be used as that like that sixth lineman that reporting eligible tight end guy wouldn't mind seeing some of those plays um again like see sanchez get some timing down i don't think holmes is playing right holmes Jake: is not almost gonna talk for the play for the season for the preseason they're talking about this is the kind of stuff that's that just irks me about him. Well, not only does he run his mouth way too much, but then he gets, you know. Justin: It doesn't even feel like he's hurt. It just feels like he doesn't wanna participate. Really? Jake: That's how, that's my, how I feel about it. Yeah, I'm not sure I feel that way. I'd rather him not. I'd rather him just go get ready for the season. We've seen him come in after sitting around for four weeks and do fine, so that's fine. Start game one against the Bills.
00 Jake: Let's go. Next up, Hard Knocks. Yeah, I watched the first episode. So I've watched the second episode. I will be watching it tonight. So the only reason we're discussing Hard Knocks is because it's the Dolphins. I had a moment while watching the second one last night that I felt a little bad for him. I must say that's where it's come to the dolphins. Felt bad for the dolphins? And Philip- Justin: I watched the first one. And it was clear to me that I think there are- They're worse than, they're way worse off than we are. I mean, they don't have any talent. They've got nobody. I don't understand how they're gonna score at all. Jake: You say Reggie Bush and as- But that's it. As a fantasy football person who actually owns Reggie Bush and who was considering him as a keeper, I'm like, yeah, I think he's gonna get a lot of work, but I don't know if he's gonna get like- No, it's gonna happen. Justin: He's gonna get hurt. Yeah. Because there's not a lot, there's not a lot to go around and David Garard... He's hurt. He's out. Surgery. Jake: Yeah, this stuff... I mean the only thing is, Tannehill, first of all, all the wives, it's amazing to see how much they all look alike. They're all like these Barbie wives. Justin: Tannehill wins. Jake: Oh, I don't know. Tannehill's, Jake Long's wife. Justin: You'll see here in this episode and then you also see notice. I saw the three quarterback wives. Oh, yeah Jake: Tana hilwins. Tana was that one but Jake Long's wife very very are in Miami Yeah, no, but they all look like they basically just they look like cheerleaders. Yeah. Anyway he actually has personality and I've made a bet with a dolphin fan not my wife but another one and About I said Tana Hill's gonna start the season. He's like no he's not like Justin: I used what Tana will be starting by week four. I hear he might be starting a week one. You should look He's exactly where Mark Mark Sanchez was right same exact place new coach new coach Drafted in the first round top ten pick or wherever is eight So right there six started basically one year in college. Yep And if you're gonna be like, oh well the kid's not ready, then you're basically admitting that he's like not as good as other guys who've been drafted in the same spot. Jake: And if your answer to the ques- if your answer to the ques- to any question is Matt Moore, then that's it. Justin: Yeah, they were like, well Matt Moore has uh, the respect of the room, cause the last year. It's like oh, because that's six and ten successful season right that's the so that's very successful I don't know they don't they don't but it's again. They take this team of nobodies and make an Jake: Interesting show out of it. I love hard knocks man. I just it is it's an interesting show. It's it's I mean, I hate to compare to the Jets version like heads and it's hard because of course totally biased But it was so much better and interesting the players So there's a big thing about Chad Johnson where everybody knows he's gone whatever is cut and it's at the end of the episode
02 Jake: It's not like whatever they show it The people who are on camera are on camera Here's some point people Reggie Bush is not on the show wasn't on the first one at all Justin: He's not on the second one at all. Maybe he said I don't want to be on the show Yeah, Cameron wake. Yeah, not on the show like they were there ends be Jake: Not yeah He I think he talks a little bit in the show But there's like there's a little players who are just like like their best players are just not on the show on the show I mean, obviously the show is about These certain players that are trying to make a story around but just interesting that there's some players just not yeah Justin: Well, he's done that like even went there with the Jets year I mean there were guys that just you know as jet fans, you know Like well, these are kind of like some of our best players. They're not even on the show Like our best player was talked about the entire yeah, but but you know Some are bet some of our best players were not really even on the show like Sean Ellis wasn't really on the show David Harris wasn't really on the show right Scott was Kamardi was right There's always like the running back who's trying to make the team and might be the last guy Always that guy right there. There's always the this is the that that guy say telly right like they make stories out of like you know, players number 51 through 57. Like they make stories out of it. Jake: Well, that's television. Anyway, it's worth watching. Again, I think it's, I have a moment of, I feel very, I've had moments of feeling bad for this team. They're one chance, not even a chance, because he just... Oh, so I did I mention this last week? I think I forgot to mention this. There's a point when that you saw the first episode now Yeah, I did he says in the and I said this remember I mentioned it last week He says in the one of his interviews. He says oh, what about last year? He says I took the year off From talking no no from playing no no no no no no They talked about playing and he goes, I took the year off. Justin: No, no. He does. Go back and rewatch it. I just watched it. Yeah. He said, I took the year off from talking. There was a pause in there. He said, I took the year off from playing. Oh, he did. He did not. No, he didn't. He didn't. That's the way it came out to me. Jake: And as my blood boiled even as a fan of football. That's not what he said though. I'm going to go back and rewire it. You should, because it's not what he said. I took the year off And it wasn't pause pause pause from talking. It was legitimately talking about his play last year. That's not how I heard it. Anyway, I will find it and I'll play it. But as a fan, I was like,
03 Jake: he, well if he didn't say it then fine, but if he did say it that way... Anyway, anyway, I won't even get into it. But all right, we have some other news. Let's get to some fun stuff. We have the Jet Kingdom fancy league. Justin: Mm-hmm. Jake: We have six people six people in there. All right, let's announce them. Well, we got Jake and Justin. That's us. That's us All right. Let's wait. First of all, let's talk about the what the jet kingdom fans of league is this year Okay brought to us Last year by fan who's now in the league because he brought it They said let's do a fantasy league. We agreed, but we agreed only on certain conditions the conditions of these We are doing a fantasy league for Jet Kingdom followers or podcast listeners Where we will then talk about it during the week You know on our shows a little bit who won who lost whatever there will be some sort of prize But the real twist is I'm going to tent we're doing a ESPN 10 team Standardly standard standard standard nothing changes about it The only thing that we're requiring to make this because it is a jet show, we think this was kind of fun, is that we're requiring that every single week that you have a Jets player on your active roster. Not your act, like starting. Starting, yeah. So active. You can't just be on your bench, it has to start. Has to start. Someone has to start. Which we think is kind of fun because A, it'll give us something to talk about in terms of Jets. B, it gives us something to talk about in terms of Draft. Draft strategy changes. Right, and see that's, you know, yeah, it changes a lot. I have gone back and forth a couple times on my number one pick. Your first round pick? Part of me just wants to pick a player who like, I think is going to do well this year, fantasy wise, just be like, none. Justin: You know what, you should have to pick San Antonio Holmes and deal with it. Really? Yeah. Since you think he's our weapon. happen. You take his 650 yards, have fun with that. Well again, I could then put in something else. Anyway, so we have asked... Jake: You should have to take San Antonio home. I could take whatever I want, and maybe I will. So then we asked people to write in to podcasts at www.CheckingIn.com. You have to answer four questions. Why should be in the league? How long have you been a fan of the Jets? How long have you listened to us? Sorry, right? That's how long you've been listening to us. Your favorite jet of all time, and then you have to pick between the broadcaster and the podcaster, which is Jake and Justin. I'm the podcaster. He pretends to be the broadcaster. So having said that, we have the first four fans in the league, and we're gonna announce them. Justin: First up, just do it. Oh, no, go for it. Oh, Steven James Peterson, senior. Yes, and now he's always posting on Facebook, and I believe it was his idea and his idea so you're in so you're in you're in Steven excellent next next Matt Johnson, Matty jets longtime listener longtime fan Tweed tweets with us all the time has participated in the jet kingdom pick them every year. Which we will be doing again this year so you have another chance to...
01 Justin: And it's one of the one of the few who actually like goes in and does the picks every single week so good on you you're in. You're in. Now we got our two new ones from the email. So one that came um uh from I'm gonna butcher this guy's name. Beto O'Byrne could be Beto could be Bido not sure be T. Oh O'Byrne So actually sent in the senses and before we've announced before we announced the rules said he's been playing fantasy for about five years huge jet fan He was he went to school at USC. So he's seen some of the jets USC guys nice Turner Sanchez and McKnight And he also added that Skip Bayless can go fuck himself. So we're definitely fans of that. And for that, welcome to the league. Welcome to the league. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom fantasy. And the last one just came in this week, Rick Beale. And he wrote a nice long email. included some photos of Curtis Martin, Curtis Martin Jersey, hanging there, and a child wearing a Brett Favre uniform. Said that he's a native Long Islander. And let's see, oh, he was the hooligans and the Yahoo pick him, he's one a week or two. So that's cool. He's been listening since 2007 when he got an iPod. Wow! No, he said early 2008 when he found podcasts. So still, a while. That's a long time to be listening to us. Sorry for that. Favorite jet? Hall of Famer Curtis Martin of course awesome and Better which is bullshit. Yeah, he said I'm a broadcaster Jake's wife's a Dolphins fan now He's a podcaster Jake is in Maine for a wedding Justin's looking at French Canadian strippers Put a gun to his head. No choose Jake. He's actually responded to a tweet from ya cuz I actually tweet under that account Yeah, you win on now. All right, so we Jake: Four spots, well, welcome everybody. You should be getting your, within the next couple of days, you'll be getting, as you listen to this, you'll be getting your welcome to the league. And the draft, remember the draft is on Sunday. Help me out, August 20th. Justin: Oh, I gotta go to the calendar for that. Jake: Yeah, Sunday, August 20th. Keep going. Thanks for watching! Sunday August 26 at noon 26th at noon. That's correct. High noon. Sunday August 26 at noon write down your calendar. That will be the draft You will get it. You'll get your invite into the league from ESPN. Please join up. We have four spots left So how do you get in? Tell them. You write us an email podcast at checking.com and you answer those four questions
02 Jake: How long you been a jet who's your favorite jet of all time? Sorry how favorite jet of all time how long you been a fan of the podcast? Why should be in the league and then who's better? I'll tell you since I'm the person doing most the coordination you might want to say me but Jake or Justin That's it. All right. Let's get to our Let's get to our questions from the fans. Right on. All right, let's start. Justin: Well, Stephen James, Pearson Senior. Of course. Of course. Question is, Crow really going to be part of this offense? He asks a lot of questions, actually. So let's just. ... ... I'll keep going. So is Crow really going to be part of the offense? Is Chad Johnson really trying out for the Jets? Some people around the league are saying this team will be lucky to be 8-8. Does the broadcaster agree? I don't see that but I'm a homer. Jake: First of all we can't answer one of those questions because we will do our official We'll see you next time, bye! prediction show later in the season. Justin: So we're not going to answer the eight and eight. Not going to answer. We'll get to that before the whole episode. We got about two weeks to go before we get to our actual predictions. Jake: It's the show right before the season starts. Right before the regular season. Yes. So is Crow really going to be a part of this offense? I say yes. I think it is. I think it's, listen, you got a guy with a huge, huge talent. He can catch the ball. Justin: Again, I say he's almost on I say there are gonna be games where he'll play zero plays on offense Yep, there'll be games where he'll play five get five plays on offense There'll be games where he's in on one play and he's a total decoy max He'll be on the field on the offensive side of the ball for sure this year Give me prediction stats. Oh I don't think he's gonna do much Mostly the decoy mostly decoy. He'll probably run the ball more than catch the ball. I do like the double reverse Yeah reverses or something along those lines He might have I don't know three to five catches. I could see him catching the ball from Tebow more often than catching the ball from Sanchez. So you're saying three to five catches, there's some yards up there. Well I'm thinking one of them could be a big one. So I'll say three to five catches but 80 something yards. 80 something yards TD? No. Jake: I'll go over a hundred. I have a touchdown. Might not be on offer. Justin: I'll go over a hundred yards. So, that's my question. Thank you so much for your comments. And I think he might have a touchdown on offense. So I think he'll let I'll just say touches. I think he'll touch the ball on offense a total of. Twelve times this year. OK, that makes sense. Jake: Touches. Yeah, I think he touched the ball on offense like three times last year. So yeah. Justin: So yeah, is he gonna be a part of the offense? Yes a big part. No, I think As is a wrinkle as a way of changing it up thing is he's so important on the defensive side of the ball That two reasons one you don't want to get him hurt right? That'd be silly and two you don't want him tired
01 Justin: because He's really playing man-man out there on an island. Not Rebus Island, but Cromartie Island. So you don't want to get him, you know, to the point where he's really really tired during the middle of the game. Correct. The second question I'm just gonna... I concur. I'm just gonna say no. Is Chad Johnson really trying out for the Jets? We have no knowledge of this. But we're just gonna say no and and I don't think he should he just he looks like he hit a key hit a wall A cliff or whatever. I think he's physically like seeing the hard knocks I think he physically is as talented as he's ever been I think he's a mental midget I think like he really just benefited from being in Cincinnati for so long that he just knew what they were doing But he was making physical mistakes in those games like literally like I didn't see I didn't see the second one where they actually had played a game okay so I'm sure he was I'm sure he was horrible physically it seemed like through the hand right off the hand in practice he looked all right but no I don't even want him forget that no absolutely not all right Marcus netters with a question The offensive defense, which will take on the biggest deciding factor on results of the season? I'm saying offensive production is my biggest concern like every year. I agree biggest concern certainly the offense, but who's gonna take on the biggest deciding factor on the results? I say the defense. Oh, yeah, cuz if this defense can be like I think number one in the league Look, you shut the other team down, you control the field position, you... That's like part of it. Like, you don't really think of it but like, if you can get another team to go three and out twice in a row, then their defense gets tired. And if you can control the field position with the special teams in the defense and you get the ball at the 40, whereas they're getting the ball at the 20, That's all in the defense. Jake: I think your point or the point that you said someone else brought up or maybe it was David and Woody is the concern is that this is sort of the game plan from like you know when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. This was the game plan. It's like build up an incredible defense, make them studs, who cares what's going on on offense and let it go and you're gonna win. But the rules and the players on the teams, we now have probably some of the most productive quarterbacks ever to play the game, all playing today, all literally on the field, and at least a couple of them we're going to see. So, I mean, not all of them, but we're going to see a couple. One we're going to see twice. We don't play Denver this year, and we don't play... I'm trying to think who else is like, oh, we don't play Saints. We don't play Green Bay We don't know we don't play defenses. Yeah, I'm saying the office right Yeah, I don't that to me that that's a flash in the pan this year. That's not serious Yeah, it's not gonna be this year like not gonna not gonna be this big Megatron and Stafford
01 Justin: No, I know you own Calvin Johnson in one of the forget that guy throws for 5,000 yards. Yeah Jake: I think you think that's a flash and patty of 5,000 yards. Yes, it's a flash. I think I think it's great I just don't think you'll be able to play in a dome I don't think it'll be repeated not gonna be able to you got the best receiver in the game not gonna be able to repeat Number one overall quarterback. He's also if he's also frail He's also as good as the only season he's ever played the entire you doesn't matter. He they did it last year Justin: Yes, okay. There are a lot of offenses that that were pretty good last year. Yeah, the Giants. Yeah Jake: You like to refer 5,000 yards. That's the point is that we're in this and we're in this league of very high-powered Offenses and I think that the the teams You can be built to and even the ones who win I mean think of the point the guys who went into playoffs like it is the guys who can throw up the points It's not the defend the points. So I just I think that theory I'm hoping that you know We need to be able to score it. There's no more winning games 13-10. That's just not, you can't do that anymore. Can't do it against Tom Brady. We're not gonna keep Tom Brady to nine points. You can do it against the Dolphins. Right, or the, well maybe the Bills, but that's the thing. Justin: The Bills are gonna be. Jake: You're gonna need to, the point is, while I'm not worried about the offense, you need to score points. So even if you have good defense, here's the thing. You have a number one defense, you might keep a team to 20. Justin: That's a good right. That's a good that's so you need to put 23 up and there were some interesting statistics that came out about the Jets defense last year that they were better than Then the reported. Yeah. Well because of a few things that sort of go against them that really shouldn't I think there were seven touchdowns scored against our offense, like pick sixes, fumbles, fumble recoveries, and then add on turnovers deep in the reds in the other zone, turnovers on special teams, our defense was actually better than the stats sort of bore out. If they didn't get these like unlucky breaks, then... Like that's, it's really a luck thing. Lucky you get unlucky. Jake: We got unlucky. The point is Rex Ryan is going to put together a good defense. I just don't doubt it. But again, I just don't think in this NFL you can play for that 13-10 win. And you certainly can't do that against the best quarterbacks in the league. We don't hold, I don't think we've ever held Tom Brady to 10 points. Ever. Ever. I don't think so. I don't think he's been held to 10 points. I mean I'm just trying to think of like, even the games he gets beat, it's usually a 35-32. Well the Giants have his number. That's true. But that's, even then it came down to a two-minute drill and... They beat him three times last year. Yeah. Two-minute drill. Gotta go. Let's go. And they go down and they win by scoring, not by defense.
00 Jake: They didn't win on defense at the end. Well I guess at the very end, I guess everybody always has to win on D. You always win on defense because they could have had 35 points at that point but they Justin: did. Jake: Yeah, I don't know. I just feel like we need to have a team. That being said, again I think this is going to be a good year for Sanchez. I'm still thinking we're going to be okay. You're right, who's he going to throw to? I don't care. He's going to spread the ball around a lot. There will be lots of different players. and someone's gonna step up. Is it gonna be the rookie? Is it gonna be Chaz Shillings? Is it gonna be Turner? Is it gonna be Curly? Is it gonna be Holmes? Is it gonna be, I still think Keller's gonna be a huge, huge game this year. It's that perfect part of the offense. All right. All right, so that's it. That's it for the podcast. Nice long one this week. We got the Jets game coming up. Giants enjoy that send in your Your request for the podcast or to be on the jet Kingdom fantasy. We are doing again We're doing the pick them this year. So we'll get that set up in the next week and we'll tell about it I'll probably tweet it put on Facebook.
