09 Justin: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always going to be that way. Get away from the bad news. Jake: Welcome to the JK podcast. Longest running New York Jets podcast ever. I'm Jake and joining me on this very special episode is Justin. Justin, how are you doing today? Justin: It's like an after-school movie. Jake: It is. It's a very special episode. Today we learn about where... Geno throws or doesn't throw the ball. So first off like all podcasts Apologies Apologies Justin: Necessary we have to apologize to our fans for what no Monday podcast after no and no Monday podcast But and a pretty late and a pretty late Thursday podcast. Yeah, sorry. So there you go scheduling, you know the podcast is Jake: a priority certainly but not the highest priority and all and uh yeah and again what you pay for Justin: that's true you want more boner refund just ask we'll ask we'll give you one yes in fact Jake: there you go you just got one and there's another one you know what i'll double refund i'll triple it boom all right so we got a lot to get to we we're gonna try to do this yesterday but couldn't and get it scheduled so we are doing today. Hopefully get this. up between before the game starts, which we will. So this is Thursday. We want to talk about today. We want to talk about the past game, meaning the game that happened on Sunday, which we both felt like a year ago. It does. It feels like 17 years ago. And then, oops, you got no time to rest because you're up again tonight with a game against the Pats. Justin: Where are we watching that? We're watching that together or watching that separately? Doesn't matter. We can watch together. Jake: All right. Well, we have to figure out the the scheduling of the SOs My SO will watch football with me. She likes to watch football. Your SO hates you and doesn't want to watch football with you. She doesn't hate me. She hates football. Okay, so we do have two TVs in our house though. You only have one. That's true. Can you kick your wife to the curb? Justin: No. Yeah You're always throwing football in my face Yeah, get in the bedroom. It's always on. Get in the bedroom. Fumball's always on. Get in the bedroom. All right. Jake: Is it always on the television? So let's start with a little bit of a recap. So I want to first say that we both thought we'd win this game. So we did. Meaning both in, from way back when we picked the whole season and then of course we picked it to win the actual game. Right. But I can honestly tell you that I didn't think it was- Justin: Over our scores, you had us winning by one, so you got that. Great. We both thought it was going to be a low scoring affair.
01 Justin: Yep, I did 16-13, you had it 21-20. We were both pretty darn close. Did I also predict that we'd win with two seconds left to go? Jake: No, I don't think you did that. After a big penalty. So let's talk about the game. Sure. First and foremost, Good tailgate? Good tailgate. Well, part of our theory is this year that this could be the year that the tailgate surpasses the actual game. Yeah, it was good tailgate. Justin: It was an early tailgate, so it included bacon. Yes. So it was a good thing. Excellent. Yep. Some various meats. Meat score. I actually just- Charcuterie. Jake: I had yesterday had the leftovers of that tailgate. Oh, wow. I hope I'm still- That's gross. You're gonna throw up later. No, yes, yesterday. I made it to the day. Okay. So, you know, the expectations were low, I think, coming this game. Expectations are high, get used to it. D'Ruel Rivas was back on the other side of the field. Our defense, what we thought would be good. But here comes rookie quarterback, who didn't even have the luxury of what Mark Sanchez had in his rookie year of actually having many games in the preseason to play. I mean, he played for... basically, I don't know, maybe three quarters of the preseason three and put like 60 snaps. Yeah. Justin: So maybe even less. But what he also didn't have the luxury of and is not going to have the luxury ever is a well, not ever, but looks like this year is a running game. So if you looked at what the Jets did in 2009, they ran for like 160 yards a game and they were the number one rushing offense in the league behind Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Sean Green as a rookie, little spry, spry or Sean. Yeah. with a great offensive line. You know, Damian Woody on the right side, one of the better run blocking right tackles. I think they had, I think Alan Fannica was there that first year. So they had a lot of good run blocking offensive lineman and they stuck to it and they didn't put the rookie quarterback in tough spots. That's not gonna happen. I mean Gino attempted 38 passes and they you know, they didn't run the ball very much I think they handed the ball off to a running back 22 times and one time curly ran it and The leading rusher by far was Gino, which I was super surprised by so but I mean to me Jake: They didn't look not all of them didn't look very designed. They looked like None of them were designed. Justin: Well, there's a difference. There's not one designed run. It was a scramble. Jake: Do you think this week they will? Justin: Why not design a run for him? Because I don't think he is a runner that way. I really don't. I feel like he has some mobility and he'll take the shot when he has it to... take the open space and run, but don't feel like he's a Colin Kaepernick or a Cam Newton or Russell Wilson or an RG3 or Michael Vick or any of those guys who are designed run quarterbacks.
04 Justin: He's he is more of a pocket passer who has some mobility for now. He's, you know, he's more. I'm not comparing him. This is I'm just gonna sound terrible. He's more like an Aaron Rodgers or an Andrew Luck. I know. Hey hold on. I just threw it in my mouth a little bit. Those guys can run, but you don't design runs for them. But if you look at the box of graph to the game, it's like, oh Luck runs for 40 yards. Right. Aaron Rodgers ran for 25-30 yards. They can. Yeah. It's not Eli Manning back there. He's just gonna stand there. Well, I think it's like a Tony Romo style, right? Where he can run if he has to but... I don't think they're going to do too much designing of runs for him. They will continue with this wildcat. He won't be running it. Not like Tim Tebow. Jake: Is it in and one of my observations, so I, so not only did we go to the game, watch the full game, but I've gone back. I rewatched the recap and I also rewatched. Like I watched half of the full broadcast like I rewatch it again. How do I look on TV? You know what? It looks better on TV. I don't know when you're there. Everything is so sort of momentary and every play is a moment. When you watch it in succession, it looks like, you know, I will say his passes when I was in the stadium seemed very I almost say that was a weird thing to say, but like slow. They looked like. arcing passes and it's like they barely got there. On TV it looks like he throws it right where he needs to get it. Crispy. Yeah, much more crispy. The thing that I'm concerned with other than the Geno Smith factor of just being a rookie and having way ups and downs. I mean, the one interception he threw was just over threw a guy. I mean, he overthrew him by like seven feet. in the air and it just went over the guy and there's a guy behind him you know that happens. It was a screenplay wasn't it? I don't remember. I just remember seeing the play and watching him overthrow the guy. I thought it was his check down. I thought it was his check down. Yeah but he overthrew him by a lot. A couple things. One is the wildcat, I still have a- We're gonna disagree on this. Okay. Go ahead. I still think they're not using it correctly. I don't mind the using of it, but it seems that they were doing what they were doing last year with Sanchez. Two completed passes in a row. Wildcat time. I just think that that's wrong. Like don't do it at the two completed passes in a row. You want to do your theory, and I think you're probably gonna stick to it, is you know on the third and twos, on the third and ones, why not run the wildcat? Because it's usually a positive you know, a positive play. But I just, I saw it, it seems like a momentum killer. And so I'm concerned that they're gonna, it almost seems like they were doing it last year, again, different, different set of people and clearly not the T-Bo-isms in there. But I just feel like they, were not, it just, seemed, seemed misplaced. And they kind of stopped it in the second half the second half. Like if you Stats from second half were much better than the first that makes sense, right?
00 Jake: I think he'd be better in the second half. I was so maybe they just didn't maybe I mean again We don't know but maybe they're looking at something and they're like, hey, this guy is getting confused They don't know what's going back and forth and it's like, okay Let's put in the wildcat give him give him 30 seconds to think before we you know Try to throw two more plays at him and he might just not know it. So But it just seemed like odd pacing of the wildcat Justin: Agree disagree. I I didn't notice it. I thought it was fine. I like it on short yardage the situations because it creates a mismatch up front because you do have to take a person a quarterback a player who is In the box and take them because they're completely useless in a handoff situation and you take them out of the box, right? Meaning a player then has to go out from the defensive side and cover the quarterback when in short yardage situations, there's a player in the box on defense that is accountable for the quarterback, but doesn't really have to do it. You know, they're now run stoppers. So you're like, sort of shifting the numbers around and making more of an advantage for you in the numbers game. Right? So, you know, you know, I get the theory of it. So I like it. But it's the pacing. No, But when you can't get a- first off, I think the Bucks are better defensively than- Which is why I was a little encouraged like our offense didn't look great But I really do feel like the Bucks are really good defense like I feel like People are gonna be hating on the Bucks because they lost to the Jets But that's because everyone thinks the Jets suck. I don't I Feel like the Jets defense is excellent They're gonna make a lot of teams look as bad as they made the back the Bucks look Doug Martin's not gonna be that bad All year. 24 rushes for 65 yards? Yeah, one of them was like one big burst. So he had one 17 yard run. Aside from that, he did nothing. 24 for 65, that's literally nothing. He lost the fumble and his touchdown was because of our offense giving them the ball at the five yard line. So that the defense gives up a five yard drive for a touchdown that... kind of sucks against them. But without that, the box scored one touchdown. Right. The shitty part of it was, you know, they scored at the end of the game, which has seemingly a lot. It's like that last one. You need to just shut it down. They did it. Then we got the ball back and I'm Screaming at you, we can't run the frickin' ball. They're gonna get the ball back. Like, we get the ball back with three and a half minutes left in a lead. Right. In 2009, we win that game without the other team getting the ball. Right. Just run, run, run, run. Run, run, run up their ass. But first down is a five yard run. But your point is... I would run the wildcat out there three times in that case. Boom, boom, boom. Jake: But your point is good in that, you know... I think that the Bucks D was much better up front.
02 Jake: Like, they're kind of, you know, they're very good up front. Justin: They're good in the back too, by the way. And those guys are not. Mr. Reavis has half the field. He's back, by the way. Like, he looked good. He looked good. He had a couple good plays. I don't think we completed a ball to his side. Yes, we did, one in front of them. One? Yeah. Okay, so we gave up one pass. Yeah. And he completed 24. Yeah. So. Jake: - I a a Justin: from him. They're smart. Stay away from him. Yeah. Well I'd be interested to see what his stat line comes out Because to me he looked back to me those two safeties are monsters. They're gonna hit you. They're gonna make you feel it, it You know, we were there we saw the hit on Cumberland was nasty. Yeah hit on curly was nasty I mean they and that guy's gotten fined undisclosed. There were two different players. One was Bolton, one was Baron. Those two are good safeties. So this is a good defense that we went up against Jake: and we're... And they stocked it in the offseason. That was their thing was offseason moves to make their defense better. I mean our thing was Justin: offseason moves to just move. Jake: No, not true. It was offseason moves to make the running game better, to make the line better, which I thought was... They passed protected well. They didn't run block. No, they didn't run block very well. Justin: There were a few guys who I didn't think had very good games. The left side of the line I did not think had very good games. D-Brick didn't have a good game. Dukasz did not have a good game. It'll be interesting to see where we'll talk about it later, where Vince Wilfer... Minds up tonight cuz he's just gonna be like hello vlog Jake: Although he is getting I mean he's he's not spring chicken anymore. I'm not sure really he's great Justin: How about our defensive line? incredible against the box Martin down just running the line Richardson was Unreal. Yep. Wilkerson is a stud. Yep I mean He said I'm going to take this defense over and it looked like a Rex Ryan defense for sure. Jake: But it's something different we've seen in a long time. The Rex Ryan defense we've had for the last couple of years has been very much predicated in the secondary. Great secondary and the front actually has been the problem. Can't get to the quarterback, can't put pressure without exotic blitzes.
11 Justin: And but so these guys are left and He's been the captain for the last three years and they took it away before Jake: I thought that was a vote of the I thought there was a vote of the of the players Yeah, I don't think it went that way. Okay, they just said no you're not captain. Yeah Justin: It's a weird thing with the box. I feel like they have all the talent with this This college coach guy that they brought in was just He's gonna be fired. He's a bit of a dick. I feel like his his he's gonna get fired Jake: He's the guy who's last year when they're kneeling down Justin: And I don't think NFL players like that stuff. No, they're like dude. No, no, I get it Jake: You're like I'm gonna win the game. I'm playing to win the game, but that's not winning the game And I felt players are like, we're not dude Dude settle down. We got people to feed here. Yeah, don't break my knee on a kneel down the victory formation, right? So what's I mean? I guess we've been talking about it with let's talk about I mean Give me your thoughts on Gino. Just talk talk. This is big big talk big topics. I mean Justin: I thought he had his ups and downs. He had obviously he made really great plays. The drive at the end of the game was fantastic. He got us in the position to win and we won and that's all you can ask for. He made I think it was like three successive drives where he just had really bad. drives in a row. It was like the interception. There was another drive like right after that where he took a sack for like minus 20 did that twice. I didn't like to see that where he he took these sacks for just bad negative yardage like really bad minus 15 minus 20 yard sacks which are just They just kill you. And then the fumble on the five yard line, you can't do that. That's that's what everyone, you know, if Sanchez were to have started that game and I hate to play this game, but I'm going to if Sanchez were to have started this game, right, won by the same score in the same fashion. Everyone will be talking about how poorly he played and that he got sacked and that he stripped sack same old Sanchez, stripped sack of the five. Right. Gino's a hero because we won by one so it's a little bit of a and that's to be expected I don't think news start type of thing Jake: Well, but I think there's a difference between having four years of history on a guy and not like Gino Smith doesn't have a history of strip sacks and Doesn't have a sister a history of turning over the ball. Well, I'm gonna play a couple games doesn't matter There's a difference between comparing a guy who you've seen for four years and you have a history and there is a tendency You can't say there isn't with Sanchez and then this guy so you could say well He you know, he always gets stripped. That's not true. He always gets 20 yards back Not true because we don't know in ten games. We might look back and go Oh, that's that's something consistent that you know Smith does he needs to work on it
03 Justin: But that's the good part about him being a rookies. I feel like I said this the last time was he's He's more coachable as a rookie. He's more receptive probably to coaching. He knows he doesn't yet know who he is necessarily. And we don't know who he's going to be. So it's like, no, Gino, when it looks like you're going to get sacked up the middle, just get sacked. Don't run backwards. Five more yards to get sacked. Or like, don't try and get away. Just throw the ball away out of bounds. Or do something else with it. If it looks like you're going to get. you know, sacked and it's it's it's there's heavy pressure around you. Tuck the ball like we'd rather you get sacked than try and make a play and get strip sacked. Right. That's what happened. He was trying to throw the ball and he got strip sacked in traffic. So and honestly, this is the way this Jake: game has to win. I mean, this game, this team has to win that way. They're not going to be able to out throw. I mean, I think the people predicting the game, those watching all the jet stuff last night. you know, the post game, the watch like the five jet shows, and you know, they're all pretty, if we can keep the Patriots under this amount, 16, 17 points, we can win. Well, very good. Yeah, good luck. We'll talk about that in a second. Overall, I thought I think he's good. Like it's, it just has. Again, what he is and will he become, you know, one theory, you don't see quarterbacks, what they become for two, three, four, five years. Right now, at this moment, he did what he needed to do to win. There were times you're like, oh my goodness, you look a complete rookie. And there were times he looked like, oh, there's talent there. There's, there's a good arm. There's, you know, there's the ability to run. There's some stuff that I that I liked. Um, but I... Honestly, I know this is hard to say, I feel like the Bucks killed themselves. I mean, they literally... Oh yeah. We won the game. The penalties were just awful. Well, that whole drive where they went backwards and backwards and backwards. I mean, they started that. I watched the replay of it and they started it like whatever, the 20. They got to... Talk about the first drive. Yeah, they got to R40 and then through penalties... like back themselves up way back like that would have been a completely different game if they'd come right out and how about all the first downs they gave us on offense yeah like some of our Justin: drives were all 15 yard penalties 15 yard and box like two in a row or something like that um Jake: so i think again i think the jets did well but if you expect every week for the other team to play Justin: extremely bad. Undisciplined was what they were from a coach who's like Mr.... seems like Mr. Discipline, but whatever. Jake: They go play, they just didn't know what's going on. I mean, they literally just didn't know what's going on. Justin: You know they had a players-only meeting before the game? Oh no, I thought it was after this week they had one. No, it was last... it was before week one. They already had a players-only meeting, which means that... they're in trouble. Yeah. Although I really do think that their defense is, their defense is really, which is why I'm kind of proud of the Jets for winning. I thought the Bucks defense was really
02 Justin: good. I don't think it was because they were playing the Jets. I think they're good against anybody. I feel like they have a good running game and they couldn't get it going. And they have a stud receiver in Vincent Jackson who they did get going, which was a little disappointing because Cromartie didn't look like Cromartie. Jake: So on the good side, I see a good, a good, a good percentage passing for Geno. I see a touchdown. The bad side, I see an interception and a fumble and I see five sacks. Yeah. Justin: Sacks are gonna happen rookie quarterbacks. Just don't see it as fast as he should the yards lost on those six Crazy forty two yards lost on five sacks. It's a lot. That's a ton. It's a lot Jake: Yeah, I mean the other thing that stuck out of me this game is while our front defense looking good I thought Kamari just played like doo-doo garbage like well actually the whole secondary Yeah him specifically because I expect him to be good Man, when he gives, when he doesn't press, when he gives the guy space... Justin: He looked slow. He looked like a step slow. Yeah. Maybe he has, I know he has an injury that he's dealing with, but I didn't think it was that bad. And Vincent Jackson... He annihilated him. Jake: 154. I mean, it was just like, it couldn't stop him. Yeah, he annihilated him. Um, alright, so let's go ahead. Everybody knows the game. We won at the end. Well, let's talk about that one, the one... So everybody's giving credit for to San, so Sanchez to Gino Smith and Sanchez, I'll say to S giving him for that rollout and sort of being hit. I even heard people say, Oh, he played it well by looking like he was going to stay in, but then going out. No, I think that was just a bad play by the box player. Justin: Like that was just stupidity. Why would you touch the guy? There's no reason to touch him. It's a good play by Gino to get out there. Look, he got us to... You know where we would have attempted a 63 yard field goal for the win And we would probably would have had to run one more play there to try and get something towards the sideline game another five six yards Which maybe could have gotten into like a 50 something yard field goal. But at that point when you've got a 48 seven seconds and no timeouts you go let's kick it. Right. To his credit he didn't panic he went over the middle to get a big chunk to Kellen Winslow which was there for the taking he took it got down there with composure spiked the ball then had this had the presence of mind to you know take those yards that they gave him and get out of bounds and again undisciplined the box. Just stupid play by David I think was his last yeah Lavante David something like that just a dumb play don't touch him. He's going out of bounds What are you touching the guy for you didn't touch the guy out there? He's gonna fall good play play by falling I Mean it was it was a penalty. I've seen some like
01 Justin: Highlight shows where it's like well, he was still kind of in bounds when he touched him and it's bullshit They shouldn't have called the penalty. No, that was a penalty It's weird on any play out what I called in the first quarter against a running back I've been called in the fourth quarter against anybody right? He's out of bounds. His foot was out of bounds He's going out of bounds right the in the rule actually states like if the player If the players clearly intent on going out of bounds and they are going out of bounds, you don't touch them. Right. Like that's the rule. So let's go ahead and pick our, I mean, first game we get already pick my head. Well, we had injuries. We should probably mention curly. I mean, we've been, we're talking about it. We're like, how's he back in the game? He's got to be concussed. Right. So like NFL just. With all their bullshit for the concussion stuff this guy's got a concussion Yet he passed the concussion test to get back on the field on game day But now we can't like is he has a like what did what the fuck is that? I don't know NFL's retarded with that when it comes to that stuff and they're just really stupid So Curly's out with the concussion man gold looked like a bad injury But came back two plays later with a thing on his elbow like yep I'm back yep thank god uh and Cumberland busted up his chin on one of those hits one of those big hits so I think he'll be okay yeah so I think the only player we're going to be missing is Curly three players this week and Culpals and Sanchez but let's not count Sanchez because he's going to be out Wow and cobles until he comes back. He's he's out So give me your play the game and your night of the game All right, so my night of the game goes to our kicker Nick folk. Okay made three field goals made Two game-winning field goals potentially. I mean he made the long field goal that put us up that I thought would keep us in the lead didn't and then came back and made a big time pressure 48 yard field goal in a windy stadium. It was windy and he made the field goal. So that's it. You get the night. I think he was the special teams player of the week in the AFC. Might have been. I think he was. Oh, good friend. So good for Nick Falk. And the play of the game. What has to be the kick? It's gotta be the scramble. Oh, it's gotta be the kick. No, I think it's the scramble to get us in position for the kick. Jake: Scramble with the penalty. Yeah, so you're not gonna pick the plus our defense penalty Scramble plus penalty is your play the game. I put it has to be how could it not be? Justin: Well, I mean you could be the kick. No, I'm gonna pick the scramble that actually got us in position for um Jake: I'm gonna pick who I'm I'm Second most excited about I mean well first was excited. I'm excited about the defensive front line Second one I'm excited about is sort of Geno Smith like just to see I get what the upside is what he can do The legend of Geno Smith. Let's work, you know, but the third person
00 Jake: I'm very excited about and I think I'm I just can't wait to see how this plays out is Kellen Winslow, I thought he had some a he had the only touchdown be I feel like he was, he's like, you know, he's the Keller. He's the guy who you're gonna throw to. And there was plays where he was open and Genos just found him. And one of the things in the after shows they said is, I guess, Kellen goes to Geno, he says, listen, if you're ever in trouble, look for me. I'll be there for you, dude. I mean, I don't know. Maybe it's just corny, stupid thing to say. But I was like, yeah, man, I love that. So him and then I'm gonna pick that play, the play before the scramble, which is that. That was a big one. You know, huge chunky yards. No time left, you know, 36 seconds or something, and we pick up right in the middle, which is, you know, they're not playing the middle because they don't want you to get to the sidelines, so sometimes you can get a huge chunk right down the middle. That's the type of stuff that, you know, really great tight ends and really great quarterbacks look for and do, so I was excited. I mean, you know, Dustin who so those are the same. Justin: Where's the same number? Yeah, I was reading this. I was reading an article. I'm not sure exactly where I was reading it, but it was talking about I'm looking for it now, but I don't think I'm going to find it. It was talking about like there is a website. It's like one of those stat websites, right? That that ranks players. from week to week, like how did this player stack up against their position? Week one to week two to week three, whatever. And two, um, there were two big, interesting guys who were at the very top of their positions. Right. One was Richardson on the defensive line. Our rookie was ranked as the second most effective. Inside lineman for the week and Austin Howard our right tackle Ranked out as the number one right tackle in the week for week one interesting very Which I love the Richardson Richardson stuff is like I mean he's like standing up in the middle of the field Yeah, I'm like charging like a bowl massive guy. He's a big dude He's very versatile. He's going to be the reason why that defensive line is the way it is. I'll be watching it on tonight's game. Jake: That's who I'm going to watch in the whole game. Like, go get it. Justin: Watch him go get. Jake: Well, and I think the interesting thing is he if you're watching the tape on that Bucks game, you're you're targeting him for double teaming. Right. You're going to try to. There's a couple of guys that's exactly right. Justin: This is where if you have a great front line, it's going to become like. Oh, and those guys are on the inside, right? Which opens up the outside guys to get ones not get chipped maybe all sorts of fun stuff By the way one more bit of news before we move on the Jets did I I. Sign Ben over
00 Justin: Manana. Yes come back. Yes, Curly's injury. So he will be lacing them up tonight as the fifth receiver, I guess. So our fourth and fifth receivers, Padola and Obamano tonight. So and Holmes hopefully, you know, won't be on a pitch count the way he was. And he was upset about it. Jake: His his postgame interview, he was like, he literally just kept saying, they said, so how's the foot field? the trainers about that. So that was it. And he was not happy. How did Gino play? You can, you can go, the coaches will look at the tape about that. He was really just, I was like, you just won. You got back on the field. Justin: What do you, maybe they kind of told him like, dude, you need to not be inflammatory and just, just. Do the Bellatrix thing. Yeah, but it was- You hate it, even though you've been preaching for it for years. Jake: No, it's a co- he just- listen, I watched, I watched, you know, Smith's press conference. He was great. He did, he did the, he literally read from the book of what you're supposed to say. How do you, how do you think your performance? I don't judge my R performance. I judge it as a team. How do you think you played? I don't, I don't look at my own performance. It's about the team effort. It's about the win. How do you think he did? I mean, he did. He literally had a line item line and by line on what you're supposed to say as a quarterback as a rookie quarterback and he just pushed it all on the team. He said it's everybody did. They all back me up. He did the thing that Rex told him the first year is my favorite thing that I remember Rex saying in the first year. He said when you get asked about something. You mentioned other guys. You mentioned at least two other coaches and two other players. And he started off by going, well, it was really this guy and this guy, this guy, and this guy, this guy, this guy that helped me out. And it was this guy that he did, he went down the list. He almost named the whole team. It was great. So Holmes, like he's not playing by the playbook. He's just keeping his mouth shut and he looked angry. And he looked upset. Justin: He didn't need a big game from him tonight because it's him. Hill and. ' I don't. All right. All right. So last bit of news before we get on to our picks. It's the biggest news, I guess, of the week. Sort of. Kind of. We talked about this last week. Well, Sanchez actually going for his second opinion to the esteemed Dr. James Andrews. Never a doctor you want to actually go see. Never turns out well. He's not opting to not have the surgery, opting to try and rehab the thing. Because he knows if he has the surgery, he's going on IR.
00 Justin: Right. You're, you're out. That's it. You're done. And that probably means he's done as a jet. Jake: I think we've seen the last Mark Sanchez. But don't, don't you kind of think no matter what he does, I mean, rehab, I guess he then, he could then H come back sometime during the season. Okay. So he's standing on the sideline with the clipboard. Right. Either way He's done. That's it. I don't know. I still think, I still think Gino has to go a couple. Let's, let's put predictive. Let's say he's out for two weeks. He's not. Justin: So they haven't said anything. They haven't given us timeline. Yeah. But if you have a torn labrum, you're not able to throw it. You're not able to. Throw the ball Like you might be able to throw the ball a couple times But when it gets to the fourth quarter that thing's gonna start barking you get hit you're done forget it There's no way he's not gonna be able to come back Jake: He's out right, but then well, he's can't if he's out out. They would just put him on my eye Yeah, he couldn't come back for us a year. They just put him on there and R and get the roster spot back They should do that. Well, my opinion, but I think there's more going on here about that he still has some ability to come back later. And I think they're looking at their roster and they're saying, if, let's say he comes back in 10 weeks, 10 weeks he'd come back and he could be back to being the Mark Sanchez we all know ..... and Gino gets hurt and we're in this position where we're making a play for something, would you rather have... Mark Sanchez who just recovered for 10 weeks, would you rather have Sims or freaking Brady Quinn? Justin: No, I'd rather have a healthy Sanchez, but there's I just don't see If dr. James Andrews, we don't know what he told them. Yeah, I just have to think he gave him an option He said he said you could either surgery or you could whatever if I'm Mark Sanchez. I'm like I gotta I gotta think about Jake: Not this year. I got to think about next year and the year after and I something something chat any ender or or somewhere Oakland might have found their guy I don't I don't believe in that either it's a one-week thing but whatever all right well it's let's start going into our the pick them how do you do last week um I think okay something missing on this there's something missing on this There's some some one of these games that we play that that we talk about every week But it's missing on this missing. I don't know. Let's see the pick. Um, It's there the other thing we play against each other. What's that thing? What's it called, I. and I I It's It called is Is it Called the checking fancy . I I Justin: I. You beat me. I knew you would and you did. It sucks.
00 Justin: Actually, I think you were upset to win by the projection. Yeah, but I said to you, I'm going to lose. And it was not a good week for me. Whatever. I like losing in week one. Gives me good waiver priority. Who are you going up against this week? It's a good question. I have to open this stupid thing up. Good job. Good job. Let's see. This week... Scoreboard. I am playing L.A. Feast for Crow. I'm playing Eric Nord. Nice one and oh. Who last week. Let's see how he did last week. Whoa. He had the high for the week 137. So I'm not looking good off the start. He's got some serious players on his team. Kellen Winslow being his jet. That's a good jet. That is a good jet to have at the moment. My jet didn't do too terrible at Blah Powell on my team When I lost to you, let's see. What was your jet had zero Jeff Cumberland Yeah, my jet was Blah Powell in the flex spot with five so You know end plus flex beat your tight end plus flex elsewhere where I got creamed yet look I'm McCoy in that crazy evil's offense which is crazy which is crazy Jake: well I'm going up against Steven week Island states who lost last week got destroyed by discardia JV all-stars and lost 112 to 86 Scored 96 last week, and I feel like I had a couple guys who kind of didn't get all the way there, so I'm kind of excited about this week. I do have a tough quarterback matchup this week, so we'll see what all right Justin: Let's get to the pick all right people want to hear the pick them yep, so every week. We're picking the picks How do you do that we had to spread last week? I had 8 I think you had 9. Nope, you had 7 I had 8. Really? Yup. I thought I had 8 and you had 9. Alright well whatever. I have 7, you have 8. I'm 23rd out of 32. Already ahead of you. Whatever? Do it. Do it. Everyone knows what we do at this point. But if you're new, here we go. Picking all the games against the spread, leaving the AFC East out, and we're gonna start since the first matchup is a Thursday night and they are two AFC East teams. We're gonna start with Sunday. So Sunday at one o'clock. We have Atlanta hosting St. Louis. St. Louis ended up winning that game, didn't they? Against Arizona. They came back and won that game. Pretty sure Atlanta lost in New Orleans. I think we both had that one. Correct. And Atlanta at home home opener. is gonna be pissed off. They're favored by seven. The line hasn't moved. I think that's about right, that line, but I'm gonna take Atlanta to beat St. Louis by Jake: Atlanta at seven. Yeah, I don't like the line. I like Atlanta to win, but I think St. Louis is a better team than people are giving the credit for, and Ialiation
05 Justin: Four or five. This next game I feel like talking about because it's an AFC's but it's an AFC's game so we'll skip it and we'll come back to it later. Chicago is hosting Minnesota. Chicago coming off a nice victory against Cincinnati. In Minnesota coming off a loss to Detroit. I like Chicago in Jake: this game even though they're given six. I like them. Yeah, I'm still sticking with the underdogs in this. I think Chicago, if you ask me straight up, probably Chicago to win, but AP is back. Ponder can't get any worse. They've got some guys. I feel they'll keep it in there. It's a division rival. I just think divisions are going to stay. They're going to stay close. It's not going to be a blowout. Justin: All right. Give me Minnesota. Okay, me too. You said pick Chicago. go. I meant to say Minnesota, I'm sorry. I have been, I did these in advance this time, so I actually, they replayed like the down right where I guess they were supposed to just go to fourth down right it was offsetting or something happened right and it was supposed to go to fourth down instead it stayed on third down so instead of kicking a field goal they ended up scoring a touchdown and green bay was all up we got screwed again for the second time but that wasn't like the second quarter or the first quarter. You have a whole game ahead of you. It wasn't like the last play of the game Jake: How about you stop the guy you just do over 400 yards? Seriously, you didn't get screwed. You really didn't The whole game to play. How about you put anybody on Bolden and just stop him? Seriously I mean, he's not literally Calvin Johnson. This guy's like 33 years old like sorry guys Justin: Well, green Bay's home. They're playing Washington who? The score didn't look like it, but they got shellacked by the Eagles. RG3 looked rusty. The offense looked really bad in the first half. They just kept turning the ball over. But Green Bay is favored by 7.5 and I think that half is too much. So I'm going to take Washington. to stay closer than that. Jake: Yeah. I'm going to take Washington as well. Same, same reasons. Oh, though.
06 Justin: Ire think Green Bay is going to, I knowledge of that from years of playing against them in the division and Dallas I think forced six or seven turnovers Jake: Yes, and like barely won right against the Giants. Well, they it's the same thing They got out they got out ahead and then then the Giants just started throwing and throwing throwing to catch up Justin: Yeah, but if you get seven turnovers and you don't win by like 20, that means you did something wrong All right, so I'm gonna say Kansas City and running it. Their home is their home opener, the crowd's gonna be going nuts. They are playing fast. That McCoy is going to run for a shit ton of yards this year. With all that said, the line seven and a half. And I think San Diego can, can stay close enough. And I, I like again, that half a point. So I'm going to take San Diego. Jake: I totally agree. I think for the win, but I don't, I think it's a little bit too big. Justin: The offense is going to take a couple of weeks for someone to figure out. Right. Couple weeks in someone they'll figure it out. I don't think they win by seven half. So give me San Diego So many every plays an option. It's crazy All right moving right along still at one o'clock we have a division game here Baltimore is hosting Cleveland That whole division is 0 and 1 the AFC North everyone lost. They're all 0 and 1 Nowhere to go but up. Nowhere to go but up. Someone who wins this game is going to be tied for the lead in the division With you know because the other two teams in the division are playing each other so Unless someone dies so Baltimore's home. They're giving six and a half to Cleveland I don't think Baltimore is that good. I don't think Cleveland's that bad. I'm gonna take Cleveland agreed Jake: I'll take Cleveland although playing in Baltimore. I can see Baltimore coming back and doing I could see don't think they have the fire power Justin: All right. I don't think they have the the the firepower on offense. They lost to Kobe Jones When Dallas Clark is a mess at tight end I mean, Tory Smith's not a number one receiver. He's a deep threat. Right? They don't really have the options for fl-acko And if Ray Rice can't get going Right. That's it. All right. All right Cleveland as well. So moving right along Another division battle here. Houston is hosting Tennessee Tennessee went to Pittsburgh and won in a home opener in Pittsburgh, which is like the first time in 10 or 11 or 12 years crazy sauce knocked off a lot of people out of their suicide pools luckily mine's a double double elimination because I had Pittsburgh in week one that just pissed me off. I hate suicide pools. I hate them
04 Justin: All right. So Houston is favored by nine. I think that's too many. I think Tennessee is Better than maybe a little better than people think you know, maybe Pittsburgh is really awful But, you know, they did go in there and win. Nine's too many. So I'm going to pick Tennessee. Jake: Actually, this is the one that I think that Houston, I think Houston is real deal. And I don't, I think Tennessee is a paper tiger. I actually see this game gets out of hand. Justin: So I'm going to tell him they're a paper tiger. I don't think that's, that's like praise. I just don't think they're that. Bad like paper tigers like oh, they look good. I don't think they look good I just don't think they are that bad. I think houston's a better team and they're gonna well Jake: They are plus houston had to kind of catch up last week. I don't think that's gonna happen Justin: Well, that's the thing. How did they let san diego out to it and fill rivers out to a 28 7 lead All right, um Four o'clock. We have a One two three three.- We have four four o'clock. The red zone might be in action at four o'clock um so Detroit is going to Arizona and Detroit is favored by one and they are a better team than Arizona so I'm gonna take to tray I'm gonna roll with Detroit the new Orleans is going to Tampa New Orleans is favored on the road by three and a half and I like New Orleans here I'll take no runs as Jake: well although again that could be I mean no one this is a matchup of a Justin: Pretty good D and they're also vision rivals right three and a half the half could come back to bite you But I'm gonna take New Orleans me too and Here's the best game of the week Oakland hosts Jacksonville Might be the two worst teams in the league unless you think the Jets are the worst team in the league like ESPN Man, I'm just taking points here because Oakland's favored by five and a half and Oakland shouldn't be favored by more than three against really anybody I don't think so. I'm just gonna take the points actually think Chad Henney might be better than bling Gabbard. So Definitely better right? So I'm just gonna take Jacksonville in the five and a half. Oh greed taking Jacksonville. All right Manning Bowl time Denver goes to New York to face the Giants in jet life Stadium and the Giants are underdogs by four and a half points at home. That's like, and they've already lost in week one. This is the kind of game that the Giants win. Everyone knows that the Giants lose against Jacksonville. They win against Denver. So give me the Giants to win outright. I'll be happy to take the four and a half points. Jake: Yeah, I don't know. I actually took Denver in this one. I just not that I think Denver's gonna do seven touchdowns again. I think this but you're probably right. But I'm gonna stick with my original pick, which was Denver. And this one I might flip. How's that? You're gonna flip later. I might flip. Sometimes flip. Okay, interesting. This is the game of the week. This is the game of the week
03 Jake: This is the game that like I want to watch and watch yeah, and the Monday night. I give it. I watch this one again Justin: Yeah, Sunday night. Well, I actually think that Monday night game could be pretty good, but let's not get ahead of ourselves Sunday night This is the game you want to watch The two times they play Seattle is hosting San Francisco and Seattle is giving three at home and guess what I'm taking San Francisco Jake: Yeah, I I I'm a little I watch the San Francisco game I'm pretty impressed with what they're doing. I mean this whole thing like they won't be able to pass because they don't have wide receivers Cap, I think it's a real deal. Like a lot of people don't like him, but he looks real deal to me. I'm taking San Francisco. Are you now? OK. Justin: And then the last game Monday night, Cincinnati is hosting Pittsburgh. Cincinnati is giving seven. Pittsburgh looks awful. They got injured. Their center all pro pouncy is out. Larry Foote. Also out wow the year. I think they've lost both of them for the year. So Pittsburgh just insult to injury Jake: Give me Cincinnati in the seven or giving giving seven. I actually have Pittsburgh in this one. Just think it's gonna stay close really yeah, I Justin: Just don't think this was gonna get embarrassed again. All right, whatever you say. All right, let's move. Let's move to the to these uh thrown picks here in the afc. So we have Miami coming off a win in Cleveland yes sir against Indy in Indy who did not look great against Oakland but pulled out the win in the end just basically like they did all last year yeah just they win by under seven it's crazy uh and the Colts are giving two and a half in this game I like I like oh I have these flipped. Oh, I put my score wrong. I liked Indy the wind So I'm gonna flip that around 20 to 16. I like I'm gonna win and cover Cuz I don't know Miami just They couldn't run the ball at all last week And I don't think you can win with Ryan Tannehill having to throw the ball that much and like I just don't see it happening. Mike Wallace isn't that good. He's a baby clearly. He's complaining after the game that he didn't get, he's mad at himself. Sure. Jake: No, the Dolphins won the off-season championship. They sure did. I don't think they're gonna win a lot of games this year. I do not think they're gonna win this game. Indy, I think, will play a little bit better at home, but I think it'll be close. So I see this is 23-24, I'll take Indy. Justin: So you have Indy winning 24, 23, 23. Moving right along. This was the game I wanted to discuss earlier. Carolina. We can discuss it. Yeah, well Carolina is going to Buffalo and they are favored by three points. Why is Carolina favored on the road against a team who just played at home?
00 Justin: time. and played basically an even draw with the Patriots. Like, does that mean that the odds makers feel like Carolina might be on the same level if not better than the Patriots? Jake: Uh, uh, Brady fumbled once. I feel like there's lots of stuff that just went their way. Justin: And so I don't feel, isn't that not necessarily going their way. It's making it happen on defense. Remember Mike Patten is their defensive coordinator, new defense. But you see the photos, they weren't making it happen. They were Carolina scored a whopping total of seven points last week against who. Seattle the number one defense. Buffalo also did a very nice job against a really good offense Did you watch the game? No, I did but but they but I just look at the score Jake: And I said, oh the score doesn't tell you points that score doesn't tell you what happened. It looked again I think this is where if I'm an odds maker it looked like Buffalo was hanging in there, but not because they were great on offense Justin: They're hanging in there cuz they got a lot of weren't they winning most of the game not hanging out of their overs Jake: Well, isn't that a good thing getting turnovers? They're not they're not like the kind they were people giving them the ball I mean really fumbling twice. It wasn't like this people are knocking it out. He fumbled He just like let no one touched him. He just dropped one of them. He's like, you are one of them He literally like fumbled And again, you won Brady Fumble on the goal line, and they picked it up and ran with it. I mean, it was like, it was like a missed snap. It's stuff that just, you can't count on it from week to week. So again, I think what people were saying is Caroline's a little bit better than they looked, Justin: and Bethel is a little bit worse. So, whatever. Fine by me. Who do you think is going to win? I think Caroline is going to win, but not by, not by the amount of points that they need to win by. So 23, 21. Be very close. I'll give them a couple points here and there. Jake: But 23 21 Carolina, I think that I think Carolina will come in and play pretty well this week Justin: I don't know. I see no reason to think that Carolina will play well ever They've never shown that they are a good team under this coach with this quarterback 2817 Carolina, okay Let's move on onto the game of the night the only game tonight The game of the century first time since the butt fumble that these two teams face each other We're gonna see we're gonna see there's a night so many replays of the butt fumble how over-under on butt fumble replays Set it one and a half over under Oh over God, I was gonna say during the game during the game Not like a game pregame doesn't count as we're gonna see it like 20 times in pregame Over under one and a half during the game. Jake: Oh, I'll take under because I'll show it once because they'll show it as something that they talk about as like they talk about here comes the jazz and they'll show it as this would happen last year.
01 Jake: Don't think they'll show it. Justin: Over under a number of times that the announcing team mentions the under one minute three touchdowns. Oh, twice. Peace. Yeah, they're gonna talk about that quite a bit. We gotta shut everyone up tonight. Jake: We're gonna shut everyone up tonight. Let's see what you put down for your score, because I know you're gonna pick against the Jets, because that's why you don't put down your score. Justin: We're gonna shut up everyone tonight. That's why you put the two and set yourself up. Everyone's gonna shut up tonight. Stop hitting the thing. I'm trying to make a point. Yeah. I'm knocking on wood. Jake: Alright, let's see what's your key to the castle for tonight. Justin: Alright, here's the deal. Let me lay it out. Let's talk about the individual. They laid out for you. The pads are depleted They are they have no amandola tonight. No, so we believe he's doubtful he may play But let's just say he's not gonna play. Gronk is still out Gronk still out Vereen is out. They're past catching Second running back who did a lot more than Jake: Ridley did well, they fanged Ridley after fumbling twice. Justin: Hey, they're going to have to run the ball. And if you've only got one running back named Ridley, who's going to fumble. And he has it seems like he hasn't recovered from being knocked senseless by the Ravens back in the AFC Championship game. So they're very depleted. With that said, they still have Tom Brady. Their offensive line is still fine. They. You know, they have, uh, I was going to say they have Ed-elman in the slot. Yep. There's no one outside that I'm worried about. So that's good. Kendall Kompkins? Not worried about it. Targeted 14 times, got four balls. Not worried about him. Not worried about these rookie receivers, Dobson, Tompkins, whatever. Not worried about the. Sudfeld, not where I mean that fumble stuff. Felt whatever. Not worried about it. Not the only guy I'm worried about is Edelman, the little like Walker clone. Yep. Because those little fast guys, they heard us for those little five yards at a time. of those like 16 play drives or it's like five yard dink and dunks at a time right some draw plays dropped in there the other thing I'm worried about slightly is the pace right so What you give me the hurry up sign, but I've got to get my stuff out here. All right, let's go. Give me no hurry up sign. Positions and pats don't let you do that. They just run the same Stuff over and over and over again, right with that said we're shocked the fucking world tonight. Chalk the world We're gonna shock the world. It's gonna be crazy sauce. All right, let's see it crazy. Write it down 23 21. Wow, you know what? That was the actual score of the hat in my head. New York Jets. Jake: I can't pick the exact same score you're gonna pick. Why? Justin: Then it'll happen. Jake: Key to the Castle is clearly, clearly. And they've been saying it's all the shows and it's one of the things, it's one of the ways to get to Brady is Brady doesn't like... Doesn't like people around him like, you know, if you give great time, he'll kill you.
01 Jake: I'm loving the way that they're just going to come after him with base fronts and it's going to be awesome. This is the legend of Geno Smith. I want to believe I'm in. I'm all in. I'll even go up one Justin: on you. Going up one. I'll go 24 20. All right. Just to cover our bases. By the way, the packs are favored still by 12 12. Yeah. 12 with nothing on offense. That's a spit in the face and Rex Ryan and oh, yeah, it's a but that's a butt fumble Line there so we're gonna be able to play our base against them. I feel like we will Jake: I'm hoping that the secondary plays better. I was worried that's what killed us in the last Justin: Whatever we've had to throw five DBs out there, and then they'd run up our ass, right? Jake: Don't think they're gonna be able to run up her ass. Doug Martin can't run up her ass. Fucking Stephen Ridley isn't running up her ass. I don't think their defense is as good, but they will mix it up. They will scheme it up. They will scheme it up. They're gonna be doing all sorts of stuff. Justin: Look out for Rob Ninkovich because he kills the Jets. Jake: They're gonna have all sorts of stuff, and their fan base is gonna be fired up. I mean, it's gonna be incredible. Justin: Thank God they won last week. Let's put it that way. Because if they lost that game Jake: a I, that and, I Otherwise, remember to follow us on the Twitter, on Facebook, on Google+, just type in Jet Kingdom and find us, subscribe on the podcast, leave us a review. We got your review from Jet Van in North Carolina who gave us only three stars because he doesn't want to talk about fantasy as much. So we had basically 58 minutes, I think he talked about fantasy, about two minutes. So hopefully that ratio is better. It's a big Jets podcast. Justin: Jets podcast. More regular season style. Jake: Right. I think you're maybe listening in the post seat. Post these in the comments. Until then, we'll be back and as as I'm saying, go Jets!
