09 Jake: The best place to be is when expectations are high. Get used to it. It's always gonna be that way. Welcome to the Jet Kingdom podcast, the longest running near jet podcast ever. I'm Jake and joining me long, long time ago in a land far, far away. A little man named Justin was born onto this planet. Now he's Mr. Justin. Justin, I've always been Mr. Justin. Nothing has changed. Justin is back from his big life event. I think you went to Utah and... Yes. And joined a commune. I married six women. Excellent. So he's back, and that's why we haven't had a podcast in over almost a month. So awesome. So there has been nothing that's gone on. Oh, nothing except the drafts. Except for the entire draft. And OTAs. And OTAs. And the Jets' hard knocks has been just on NFL Network. Oh, I was about to say, to win the new one. And a marathon. yesterday. You know it's terrible. What? So I was away. Yes. I got married. Yes. So my wife sitting next to me on the couch and I'm watching. It's a pre or post wedding. Just yesterday. Because the marathon was from like three to eight. So I was watching the last like ten minutes of the last episode which if you recall was they signed Rivas. Yes. So like the the voiceover guys like And now they have the final piece of the puzzle as the Jets go for the prize of winning the Lombardi trophy. The Super Bowl is awaiting them. That is their only goal. And she like that's like about what the guy says and she's sitting there laughing. Justin: He's like, ha ha ha ha ha ha. She's just hysterically laughing. And you're like, why are you laughing? Jake: She's like, that didn't happen. That's never happening. I was like, oh my god, I hate you. Oh, good job. Good job picking a supportive life. It's very emotional. Very emotional. So yeah, so a couple things have happened. A, you got married. I did. I think twice. Here's the ring. Very good. Join the club B you got married during draft weekend. So I sure did the biggest douchebag ever not true could have gotten married Could have gotten married September 7th. Well, that's you would have true killed me. No, no, cuz that would have no effect Oh, I guess what a number seven. Yeah, you would have missed opening day I would not have missed a week. You would have missed my wife. You would have had one less person. You would have had plus one on my wife. Plus one. Awesome. That's what I wanted anyway. So yes, during, not only during your rehearsal dinner, but during, no wait, it was done by the actual, I think it was done by your actual wedding, but the rehearsal dinner was done during the rounds too.
04 Jake: So, whatever. That was fine. I went to the draft, third for you. The year in a row went with... I went, same guy went last year, Dolphus fan. It was great. Like it was, it's fun to go to. And now knowing that they're gonna, or the rumors are that they're gonna move it like to maybe LA or something. I feel like a little bit like, oh good. I'm glad I went because now this could be, you know, it feels like it's always just down the street. Anybody can go, but it's not because it could move somewhere else. And so. I did listen to our predictions podcast, which was back in. How did we do? You did terribly. I did bad? Really? What did I say? Well, so bad. A couple of predictions that you made, you made a prediction that the Jets were going to trade up a lot. I thought they would. Okay. I thought they'd make at least one move. And my prediction was that they would use all 12. They used every pick. I cannot believe you picked 12 players. I am the Nostradamus. What do you mean with 12 players, honestly? Well, we picked all 12. The funny story is Manish, your friend. Manish is a dick. Well, he said during the draft, he said if the Jets will pick all 12 players, I will hitchhike. I don't know if he hit site good. He probably died. So that was one prediction. I think my other prediction that the guy got right was we were going to pick a quarterback. I said we were going to pick a quarterback. Now I said Aaron Murray in like the fourth round. We did pick a quarterback. And I imagine he'll make the roster. I feel like he will probably make the roster. I feel like he will. Only because of his where he came from. Like he's Rex's son's back. Well, you know, he's going to fight with Sims first spot. And maybe I don't know if Sims would would take the practice squad or he'd be signed away by another team. I at this point, well, here's the don't think the third quarterback. Sims isn't the guy. Neither is Taj Boyd. Well, but Taj Boyd could be the guy. I know enough of us Sims to say he's not the guy. I don't know enough about Taj Boyd to think that he's not the guy. Yeah, well, okay. Well, this could be that guy in the rough. Sure, it could be. So the draft, we're going to go down all the draft picks. Yeah. I want to give them little mini grades. Yeah. But you had some predictions about... I think you said we're gonna pick a now I'm forgetting all the ones you said in the thing but anyway those were the big ones he said we were gonna trade up a lot um trade around really thought we'd come out of there with like seven or eight picks and not twelve twelve is a lot that's like like a lot of the roster yeah it's an it's an it's like A quarter of the roster? Yeah, it's awesome. Lots of guys. Lots of guys that fill holes. Insanity. And they didn't go for the wide receiver very quickly. We all thought they'd grab the number. I mean, they drafted quite a few wide receivers. Oh, yeah. But I think they drafted three receivers.
01 Jake: Three wide receivers, two cornerbacks, one safety, one running back. And then I'm trying to look at the other numbers. A tight end. A tight end without saying that. I am very excited about what they did in the first two rounds. And some big fat guys a, and some big fat guys. I like the first two rounds. So let's talk about it. Love it. So the first thing is they didn't trade anyway. They sat right at the spot. Johnnie Mansell dropped like a rock. He was sitting there. He sat there. The Cowboys was the fun one. When we sat at the Cowboys, it was like, are they going to pick him? Because Mike Mayock. Picked him to go to the Cowboys and I think that started the whole thing and Jerry Jones said that he was very high up on the board Yeah, he'd know even a minute afterwards He said he was the he was the guy who he highest rated guy on the board Yeah at the time when men's hell was they probably made a wise decision and not holy him I mean as much as Tebow took over the airwaves of ESPN Johnny football is everywhere Cleveland is... they'd be dumb not to just throw them right on the field. Well, first of all, they had the best and the worst day ever. So they got that... they, you know, they picked the guy in the beginning, then they went down. We can talk about that actually because one of our competitors picked an interesting pick or did some trading. And then they came back in the first and grabbed Manzel But then the next day they a find out that their number one receiver is out for a year. I know that's just so... God hates Cleveland. And they didn't pick a fucking receiver in the whole draft. God hates Cleveland. never make the playoffs. So this is a team that literally hasn't made the playoffs in 12 or 13. It's been even longer than that but literally for next year and who they traded to? They traded to Cleveland. Here's the thing, Cleveland could have the first and second pick next year. I don't think the bills would be that bad. Justin: Can you imagine them having the first and second pick next year? Jake: first and second pick. Well the bills pointed away Stevie Johnson right? Or they caught him or traded him at a some point. They traded him later. To San Francisco. Next week yeah or the next day. Once it was clear that. I mean this kid is supposed to be pretty good Watkins it'll be fun to see him and Milner grow up as like a little rivalry in the AFC East. Um, you know can't fault the bills they they they saw what they wanted and they went and they grabbed it. So Was the price high? I think so. I don't like trading like first round picks for like Un and some an unknown quantity right traded. It's kind.
04 Jake: the . . - - - - - - - - -'s all these picks including following years number one for an unknown quantity in RG3. Now, we still don't know if RG3 is going to be like a franchise guy or if he's and been super talented like a Mike Vic type right like a guy who has all this talent in the world, but never really got over the hump. Um, and St. Louis is still reaping the benefits of that trade. I mean, now St. Louis ever gonna win. Who knows? Cause they're in a crazy division, but still the more first round picks you get, the better you should be. So the other, the other big ones in the first round, I think that will, before we get to our picks, um, were, uh, Giants pick and Odell Beckham. Yes, that was in true. That we thought was going to come to us. Um, I think the Giants had a diff... I think that was plan B for the Giants. I think so too. When... what's his face? Eber... The tight end went off the board. Eber going to the Lions felt like a weird pick. Very odd. They have more of what... Why were they picking offense? I don't I don't get it. and then the other, the head scratcher I was just looking at, oh, two head scratchers. The raider's actually picking a valuable, like. Like Khalil Mack. Like they didn't go for like the big splashy box. But they've done that before and the I'm a portal. They already said Chad Henry is playing. That's bullshit. And then Packers picked the guy with the best name ever. Ha-ha, Cunt index. Yeah, that guy is pretty good. I'm sorry. First name. Right? Yeah. Well, we picked Andy. Yeah, I know. So let's get to our picks. We 12 picks. We came out with 12 players. Let's talk about them. Calvin Pryor, baby. Yeah, Calvin Pryor, baby. Yeah, Calvin Pryor, baby. Yeah, Calvin Pryor, baby. Yeah, Calvin Pryor, baby. it. I love a hard hit in safety. I love me a safety who can hit and hopefully he can cover a little. Oh, yeah. But we haven't had. I don't think we've had like a real, you know, guy who can who Rex can develop as like a top pick at the safety position. Please don't say the word to everybody thinking, but OK. What I don't even know the comparison like what's his every time Rex every time Rex comparison you compared it to do No, I'm not saying anybody's compared to anybody yet. Oh All right, don't compare him to anybody. I'm not comparing I don't know I don't know who the guy is really all I know is he's a hard-hitting safety with you know, whatever and I saw his little highlight Reel you look good Yeah, it looks good.
00 Jake: But, you know, I don't think we've got a lot of penalties. That's fine. I'm all for knocking the shit out of guys. I think it has a, you know, don't do it on like third and twenty two. But, you know, if it's second and three and a guy's cross in the middle and you're on, you know, you're on there on the their own 30. Fuck it. Take a shot. Yep. See if he comes back across the middle on second and four late in the fourth quarter. Everybody was surprised that they went safety over corner or wide receiver. You know, it's a value guy if he sees a dude who I think the safety is actually really important in the Rex Ryan defense. Oh, yeah. And we haven't had. A stable like Jim Leonard was the guy we had Landry there for a year. He wasn't very stable He wasn't even practicing. We're going back to like Kerry Rhodes But he didn't like Kerry Rhodes. No, I know but i'm saying like the last time we had kind of like a guy Who was a name brand. I was like Jim Leonard was his guy. That's right And like, you know, Ed Reed was his guy in Baltimore like that was the one I was asking You know, well, I don't I don't think they compare. I think they're completely different players Um, Ed Reed was a ball hawking free safety. This guy by all accounts is a strong safety. You will play in the box and help shut down the run and hopefully cover some tight ends, you know, on this new crazy, you know, six foot five tight end world. Yeah. Well, speaking of six foot five tight end. So first pick, what do you think? Give it a grade quick. It was a good pick. I would go. B plus. Yeah, I'm position only. I don't really know. No, you can't talk about guys because we know we don't. Three years from now, we'll look back and we'll say, well, they did a good job. I agree. Somewhere in the B is B plus. Second round, Jace Amara. This is my my New Jersey is going to be a Maro. Yeah, it's a good one. Love that. I love this pick. My New Jersey is going to be Mohammed Wilkerson. Oh, yes, I don't have one. I love this. I love this. this Jason Marrow pick. I love having a big tight end. I love having a big dude who is just a receiver. I don't care if he can block who gives a shit. They come to block. It doesn't matter. Can Jimmy Graham block? Who knows? Who knows? Who cares? Honestly, who cares? He's a big ass dude who caught a shit ton of balls last year. And I don't care if that's a product of the offense or whatever. Everybody's a product of the offense right you play in the offense you play in and you're either good or you're not and if you're Good you're gonna get the ball and this guy got the ball a shit ton, so I'm all I'm all about this pick I love having big guys. I love having big guys in the red zone. You saw what it did When we had like Plaxico Burris, we went from being one of the worst red zone offenses to being one of the best red zone offenses. You have a big target like that, you chuck it up in the air, it helps the young receiver. It's a good thing. Decker's 6'4", this guy's 6'5". Hey, we need big dudes. This is a big dude. I like it. I like it a lot.
00 Jake: I think in the second round it's also a very good value like if you were to like say well They were well you did not want to pick a tight end in the first you kept saying what I don't know but they were closely ranked Yeah, I mean who knows how how much different they really are except we got this guy in the second we got our our safety in the first. Right. Strange though, if you look to your draft board, and always every prediction, no one was Yeah, there's no reason I wouldn't say plus but I'd say solid A. I'm excited about this player. I don't know. I mean, Calvin Pryor, I see him hit people great, but I'm actually excited to watch Jason Marrow. Now, I don't think that rookie tight ends in history are very good. I feel like tight ends generally just jump out of the box and are good. Yeah, it's probably a lot like receiver. I think let's all just back away from the, you know, 10 touchdowns rookie MVP. Well, he's also, you know. Cumberland's gonna play. Yeah, like you know, what also is getting hurt in the last couple years? He's always he's always had a bit of an injury bug I mean, but Cumberland's gonna be on the fields So this guy will be probably split out a lot. Yeah in the slot. You won't seem lined up tight You'll see him just lined up how you know, Jimmy Graham is lined up I feel like he's gonna play that kind of role in the offense. Yep Next round excuse me third round Finally got our corner. This is the one that people like to sort of... Why this corner? I'm on that same bandwagon. Google from Maryland, uh, 510. I'm on the bandwagon with the Sh Why this guy? It just doesn't... You know, we ended up last year picking a corner who we knew was injured and was going to miss time and it definitely affected his play last year. And that was when we had not as pressing of a need as we have this year for a guy who can come in and play. I just don't know if this guy's going to be able to come in and play. You know? It's a lot of players. in this area for the team. It doesn't feel like this is the, this isn't an instant starter. This is more of a, hey, can we get someone to come in who might or might not play, who could be a project, who could, again, you're talking a third round corner. You're not talking. Instant satisfaction. Well, I think you're gonna the kind of guy who needs to play third round corner This guy's got to play special teams at the very least. Yes. Yes, and I think he could be in in bigger packages I just don't see him being like oh starting off. He's the you know, he's our number two
03 Jake: No, but but again, I don't evaluate corners The name's cool. Dex. I don't like the injury thing. I just... because I saw what happened last year with Milliner. This guy was hurt last season is now recovered. Milliner had shoulder surgery. In the off-season though. Yeah, but he couldn't do OTAs. He couldn't do the rookie camp. This guy shouldn't I think he is. Anyway, that we should look up. Now we get to our like, we got a ton of picks in the fourth round. This is like a crapshoot for the rest of these guys. No, then we went for some crazy... It's a crapshoot. You think these are crapshoot? Picked some wacken. I can't tell you the difference between them except they're different sizes. Absolutely big. Jolene Saunders from Oklahoma and Shaquille Evans. from UCLA. The one I'm more excited about, I think, is the bigger one. I don't think we need a little slot guy, but I think we have Curly there. I don't know. I'm more excited about Shaquille. Shaq. Because he's a Shaq attack. Shaq. And then we get our first big fat guy. I love big fat dudes. This guy's big. Dakota. Ferman though, small school. Yeah, 64313. Um, you know, you go for the big fat guy guy. It's kind of an issue because. You know, Cologne hurt himself in the O rookie season, right? Cologne is an injury waiting to happen. We were really lucky. He, you know, made it through the 16 games. But if we made the playoffs, he wasn't playing as he was injured. You know, we don't really know what we got over there. Right tackle with Giacomeini. I think he missed like six games last year. And can you name a backup? I mean, I can name a few, but. I mean, it's kind of rough. Yeah. Can you name one? No, I can. I can name Schlatter off who's like the backup center and guard, I guess. Caleb Schlatter off. He's been on the roster a couple of years. I know they drafted that a bushy guy last year as a tackle They drafted that defensive guy last year named William Campbell whose they They're converting to a guard. But who knows? So like, having that torn pack and now hurting his leg. They're hanging in the tent. Yeah but he can't be in shape. If you're hurt in your upper body and your lower body, you can't work out.
16 Jake: I always say that if you have 12 picks, why didn't we come out of this with like fucking four big fat dudes and just See if we have one. I mean who knows? Oh, we never know we have one One is not enough from Furman Go grab like you know some guy out of the SEC. Yeah, I don't know It's true, there's not a lot of fat guys in this pick. No, not a lot of fat guys in this draft. We drafted one offensive lineman. I think we needed at least two. We had two in last year's, and they just sat there, and they never played anything. I mean, they were kind of like sitting there. They were on the roster. They weren't on the practice squad. They never dressed. Maybe they learned something last year. Who knows? Maybe that's the depth. But. Have never dressed. Yeah, couldn't have been that good. Oh, I practice I mean they weren't better than Vlad do costs. So we're doing we're doing grades for Julian sent Julian Sanders Saunders, you know my take on this I stopped grading after like that's it You just don't care. I don't know who the guys are. Okay. Well, I mean but you have to create on position We pick out what position we drafted receivers. This should be your a plus. It should be good for drafting receivers We needed them. All right Um, so you, so you don't really care about anybody else in this. I picked up another linebacker. There's not one other player on here that I can give a shit about except Taj Boyd, and that's only cause he's a quarterback. Okay. So let's talk about Taj Boyd. Um. I I mean it's a little it feels like a little bit of a Homer pic I mean the head coaches if you said to me if you said hey the head coach His son plays with the quarterback and they picked that guy I think that's oh and the Hutch Coast goes to the games watches the games is a fan has been caught not caught Sorry, that's stupid has been shown, you know, he's not watching a son. I know I know but people make a big deal of it Well, I mean, here's the thing. This guy, he actually is a name brand. Yeah, he played. He played in a real school. He made it into Gruden's Ginder. He's a name brand. Yep. He did. He was one of those guys where he probably would have been picked in a much higher round if he never came back for a senior season. Right. Just... Always a bit of a red flag if you ask me like a Matt Leonard kind of red flag where he didn't drop, you know He would have been like a first overall pick he went tenth, right? This guy dropped to the sixth round He might have went in a second like like a Gino last year He might have been in like the Gino zone right last year. So You know
01 Jake: Maybe... maybe he's something, maybe he's not. My guess is he's nothing. Um, my guess is... Yeah, my guess is he's just... Justin: Whatever. I mean, watch his tape? No. Oh. Jake: You should watch his tape. It's... no. He's gonna fight to be the third string. He's not overtaking Gino. He's not overtaking Mike Vick. Wait, but Mike Vick, for all intents and purposes... It's a one year guy. He's a one year guy. This guy... Is your backup next year? Maybe or or look, I'd love to see him win a job, but I don't really feel like going through another rookie quarterback season again just would feel like such a step backwards. It really would. I want to see what Gina I want, you know, to. Win the job. All right. All right. Let's stop because we have the other thing we need to order is the competition because it's all the news. So we're going to talk about that. But let's go back. Let's great. So you're kind of low on this. This. Yeah. I think it's ridiculous to pick 12 players. It's absolutely absurd. Give me a grade C. A C. You're giving this a C. Yeah. places and I don't think you should come out of a draft with 12 players. We're not. We don't have the luxury of coming out of the draft with 12 players. We should Quality, quantity. We went quantity. I wanted to find quality. No, you... It's mining. It's mining for gold. No, don't make that analogy. You don't dig one small hole. You dig a big hole and you find the gold chunks. Because I guarantee you that there was a guy sitting there like... No, you don't. When we had our third round pick and we end up with this McDougal because they need to pick a corner. I guarantee you there was a guy that was better than him sitting there that if we would have traded back up into the second round we would have snagged. Guaranteed. Yeah, but that's also going on that trading away one of your fourth rounds gets you where you want to go, that you have a trade partner, and that you have them drafted or graded that well. Hi, hi. Do teams really have a problem finding a trading partner in the draft? I think you want to get up. If you want to position, yeah. No way. Because what they want to give up, what do you want to give up? The Jets should have looked at it and said, we have 12 picks, we should really have eight players. You're giving a C, I'm giving a solid B because of this. I like this strategy and I think it will work. Not all these guys are anything, right? But there's gonna be some guys that come with this that you wouldn't have got if you traded away. The ability to get that the other thing is you got you got 12 players It's a numbers game. Give me 12 players and let's see six of them become good Right. It's I don't want to have three guys come out and then two of them are gone. Well, here one of them's hurt I want to have 12 and get six we will I mean we got two corners We got two wide or three wide receivers We got, you know, a tight end. We got we got a lot of things that we needed.
03 Jake: Some of them will turn out to be better than others. I like the strategy. Again, it's his it's if you're in on if you're in on it's like at all the glaze. I'm in on it's like that. Like his approach. I just don't really like this. I didn't like this how he handled this particular situation because I am of the opinion that you should not come out of it with 12 players All right, I just don't think you're gonna hit the way that you you should have more guys like targeted There's a way that they hit their guys the guy who you jumped up for second one could be a bust as well That's the thing. You don't know But at the very least you've like sort of targeted guys. I feel like they just they were very they didn't target these guys anyway Because they just fell they just they just reacted they were like, oh it's our pick. Let's pick this guy I I think that's absolutely that's like saying that the entire staff of 20 to 30 people who work for an entire year are buffoons Justin: They're not really just they literally sat there and were like drinking beer and like oh come oh, it's our pick Jake: honestly, do you honestly think that they're sitting there and like You know, in the third round and they're like, yes, we have all these picks and there's no guy that we would Really want to go get we're just gonna wait till it's our turn and pray and hope that he's there And then he was there like do you think that they said oh shack evans. We want that guy You know what I mean? Well when you're down in the fourth round then you're picking the guys you want You're picking guys amongst other guys that you want, but I think for the, you're saying basically, why don't we trade away some of the sixes and fours to jump up into the second and grab another guy? Back into the third or back into the second. But that's saying that that guy that you want and the third is a guy you want. Like you could jump back up there, but there's nothing to jump up for. There's a very deep draft. Yeah, very deep only because we had 12 picks. No, it was deep draft across many positions. And so, I mean some positions more than others. Tight end was not deep. It was like three guys. Justin: Three guys. Jake: These are the three good guys. And other than that, it's a pile of shit. Corners weren't very deep. That's why you pick one in the third. Wide receivers, deep. There's guys all over. There's like 20 good wide receivers. Alright, so let's talk about the number one controversy. Let's go to the number one controversy facing the Jets now, which is the competition. The competition. So here's the story for everybody who's been under a rock for the last month, like you have. I have. It's me. There's the signing of of mics of Michael Vick that then puts us into this is this a competition isn't this is it a job it's been said by I think everybody. Both ways we've had Rex and is it saying it's an open competition for the position that we have Rex saying but. Genos can be very hard to beat out. Then we have Vic saying, it's an open competition. I'm here to compete. Then we have Vic saying, this is not really a competition because I'm just here to back up.
02 Jake: I'm not here to actually compete with him. Well, you have Marty in there. And then Marty going in saying, what did he say? He basically said it's Geno's job. So it's a, first of all. I don't like the clusterfuck of this. I like the let's shut up and play ball type. I still like that attitude to the press and why? My number one issue is why is anybody saying anything but nothing? Like no one should be saying anything but the company line. What's the company line? Open competition. Okay. Anybody you ask? I don't care if it's the groundskeeper, the fucking food lady. I don't care if it's a guy who scrapes out the nut sack out of the jock. Whatever. If you go up to him, hey, man, what's the deal with the QB? He goes, open composition. I want them all to be on the same line. In that they're doing this back and forth shit shows why the Michael Vick thing becomes a little bit of a problem. Because we're not all on the same page anymore, including the guy who you're paying $3 million. to be the backup, which is fine. I don't think that's, some people are like, that's a lot of money. It's not a lot of money for a backup. $10 million is a lot of money for a backup. $3 million, it's really not. To have a competent backup. So now we're in this sort of, you know, are we getting into, my question to you, are we getting into T-Boland where is it a competition? Is it not a competition? Is it a real thing? No. Are we getting into this bullshit press stuff and and is this starting to prove that maybe Michael Vick wasn't ready to be this guy? Well, first of all, I think Michael Vick is is is saying what he believes is is the truth which is saying I'm here to compete but I feel like He like G knows the guy like it's not like they're not gonna not a real competition Well, he doesn't I I feel like what you don't want to do as a backup veteran quarterback Who has been brought in as a backup? He's not being paid starters money. He's being paid backup money, right and Has probably been told to be a mentor what you don't want to do is is hurt or bruise the relationship that you're gonna have to create with this guy who you have to sort of mentor. Well, I would rex be saying it's an open competition then. That's basically saying you suck and I'm gonna find a better guy. Look, here's what I believe. I believe fairy tales and princesses. I believe that at the end of the day, If Michael Vick completely outplays Gino Smith in the preseason and doesn't get hurt in the third in the third game and doesn't get hurt in the third game in the fourth quarter but if he outplays him like it's clear whoa this guy's way better he's gonna start in week one from that perspective I believe it is a competition With that said, I think if they play equal or Geno's like a hair slower or a hair under
05 Jake: or Mike Vick kind of looks better but by hard time it goes but it's Geno's job. It's Geno's job to lose let's put it that way and he can lose it. Therefore, it is a competition. It's not like there's open competition. Yeah, not so much. But again, it's a skewed competition out there. He's he's going to start game one of the preseason guaranteed. He's going to start game one of the preseason. And if he goes out there and has a genome game and throws two picks in the first quarter and then gets pulled like a starter would. And then Vic goes out there and lights it up for the second quarter. Throws two touchdowns has an electrifying run down the sideline There was a deep bomb to whomever the fuck rookie receiver is gonna be out there They're gonna look at that in game two and say hmm Should Vic start game two and I bet they would okay, so then he starts And he has a sterling game and then Gino has another just sort of like ho hum whatever game He's gonna start game three as the presumptive starter I think from I think it's a real competition but Gino has an edge going into it because he is the incumbent starter. He did start 16 games last year and right he started every game. Yeah right so he he has that benefit of that but it's not. If you're a Sanchez apologist he started by default. That he didn't win the job. I do believe that to be true Oh, but but he did he I know you but I know you bought the butts fumble Jersey He is I did not he is the incumbent starter. He gets I think he gets the benefit of the doubt of being In people's minds. He's thought of as the starter and and John It's a drafted him to be the quarterback and it's not as though that bias is gonna disappear I don't believe John Adams, but I don't I do not believe I think John is he wouldn't drafted him. He's a value guy. He wouldn't draft him He wouldn't drafted him. I don't think there was so many needs on that team last year He wouldn't draft the quarterbacks first year and he can just throw a guy out there He wouldn't have done it this this guy dropped out of the fucking first ten picks all the way to the second round He wouldn't have done it. He wouldn't have done it. He would have picked it for need somewhere else Because if you look at that draft and look at just like the 10 picks around Gino, I'm sure you could have said damn that guy would have been good for the Jets. Listen, we had two picks in the first round. We got two good guys and then we just had this guy follow us. It's like fuck we do the quarterback and the guy's drinking beer and he's like fuck whatever take the quarterback. No, he's the best court. It's amazing he's fallen. Let's just take him. And then Santa just gets hurt. And then he's a starter. Like I said, I think it's his job to lose and I think he could lose it. Like there are guys out there where you say, oh, it's this guy's job to lose. But like in reality, he's not going to lose it. But they're not. That's the thing. They're not second year quarterbacks who didn't didn't have a. awesome first year.
01 Jake: But look at like EJ manual in Buffalo. Yes, right? I would, I mean. The off-hurt EJ manual. It's his job to lose, right? He's not gonna lose that job. But they didn't bring in anybody to really compete with him. I don't know who's behind him. I honestly have no clue. They didn't bring anybody to compete with him. I don't know. Well. I know of the signings and I didn't bring in a guy who's that guy who to compete with him. They brought in, you know, veterans, but not veterans who are still hungry to start. I really don't know who they are. I also drafted him in the first round and by throwing and by saying it's his job, he's open competition, they're then throwing, you know, throwing EJ Manuel under the bus. I guess. Listen, you can be the Patriots and pick a quarterback in the second round. And do it all the time. And be like, fuck you Tom Brady. We're always gonna pick quarterback. The Packers used to do it all the time to five. You know how many good quarterbacks backed up Brett Favre and then went to start and like win a shit ton of games. Lots of guys. Todd's void Lots of guys backed up rep far. I mean shit Yes, but that's also the mark Brunel behind them They drafted him Kurt Warner was on that team behind him at one point Hasselback if the good one was behind him at one point more obviously everybody Rogers was behind him at one point I mean, this is like a quarterback Factory they had going on back there. Yeah, but out of all those guys There's another 10 that just turned into piles of poo that are like, oh, this is the next guy and then just nothing I think there's a couple that were there when when Rogers was there too It's like they kept drafting them and like why you keep drafting them and they just turned into nothing. Here's my thing. I Don't mind I think open competition I don't think Gino Smith has done anything last year that sort of guarantees him a spot like the starter He played well enough to win eight games. He played well enough to lose eight games Poorly enough enough to lose poorly enough to lose more than that No, I don't feel like he was bailed out of like I feel like he was bailed out of two of them They could have super easily been shot and 10 the first game they won Yeah game one thing I was lucky and the game against the Patriots could have very easily lost that one I mean yeah, but I also got a call that call was made how many times last year like once So I mean we got that one over on them which right is Great, because we never get anything. Yeah, but he won. But he won that Falcons game. Absolutely. Yeah, I mean, he won some games, but he won some games that we should have lost. And I don't think there were any. There were any games that like you look at. Oh, they lost that game. They should have won because damn, they played so well. Like we got blown out. Like our I don't feel like we blew any one team out last year. Think our like our point differential was negative Like we're in 8 and 18, but our point differential was negative something because I think we won
03 Jake: so many games Like I think we were five and one and games decided by less than a touchdown which means five of our wins Came right. Well, we won three by by field goals at the end of the game I mean those are swing games. Those are like luck games. All right, so the point is the point is I think I Think he needs the competition. I also don't like this theory I didn't like it with Sanchez either this soft mentality theory, which is that Oh, you don't want to do anything that hurts his mentality or hurts his mojo or doesn't make him feel. Listen, you're getting paid too much money to have us have any kind of soft, you know, to be soft on the field or mentally because they used to be of Sanchez Bic. It's really going to hurt his, you know, wherever they drafted a quarterback like, you know, you go out and play. You do what you got to do. Um... And last thing, I just don't like Vic not towing the party line. Because Vic is sort of known for not towing the party line. It's kind of like his thing. And he did it last year. Was it last year or two years ago? He said some stuff. It's like I just want him just to be a good guy. Just come here. Be the guy who doesn't say anything else than what people want you to say. They want you to say open competition. Say open competition. They want you to say you're the... Bonafide backup, be the bonafide backup. Whatever the party line is, be it, because that's being a team player. I want you to be a team player. Whatever the position is, but toe that line. He's the one who's saying things outside of what they're saying and they're taking it and running with it, the media is. Fuck the media. I'm not a media guy. I'm just a goddamn... I'm just a goddamn podcaster and fan. All right, speaking of being a podcaster and fan, so what have we got left? Nothing, really. I mean, there's not a lot of news other than the draft and other than the OTAs. I don't, I've been reading the OT stuff. There's not really a lot out of it. It's like, oh, these guys did this. These guys, like, you know, other than people getting injured, you know, like someone like Sean Lee, that's like a big deal. Like, oh, Sean Lee gets injured again. Okay, you know. Um... I'm trying to think what else? What's the next big thing? There's another set of mini camps in June, right? Training camps in July. Is that the next big thing? No, it's got to be more. All right, well, we'll be back when there's more to talk about. Oh, I think we should officially announce. Jet Kingdom Fantasy League 2014. I guess we do. So it's official. So maybe we'll do a podcast where we just come on and talk about that, get people into the Jet Kingdom Fantasy. Start getting your entries ready. I'm trying to convince Justin to do a 14 team league. Maybe we'll, just do 13. We'll split the difference. I don't think you can do that. You can. Everybody gets a bye all the time. All right, well we'll be back welcoming Justin back from into a life of marriage. It's awesome. We'll be back in, I don't know, a couple weeks maybe? Yeah, something like that.
03 Jake: I don't know if you feel like it. One of those other news to cover. Until then, It's Justin. I'm Jake, as always, from the Jet Kingdom. Podcasting studio, go Jets.
