20 Jake: Welcome to JKN Podcast, longest running New York Jets podcast. Period I'm Jake joining me 298 times in a row lucky 298 Barry Justin That's not you doing today. I'm doing so well. Let me explain to the audience. What day it is It's Friday May 4th made a fourth be with you. Thank you. I don't care so We flew to California to do this podcast. Right. Just to celebrate the fact that we picked a California-based quarterback. Yeah, we had to be in the state of California to do this podcast. True statement. True statement. Right now. Nothing has ever been truer. It's noonish. Yeah, May the 4th. Yeah, we are in where we are, which is in the Napa Valley. We're in Napa together at the Silverado spawn resort together. Separate rooms. Well, just leave. Now let's just leave it there. Just let a couple's massage earlier. It was nice. We went for a bike ride. Everyone was happy at the end. Yes. All right. Oh, right. And we're done. And we're done. We got nothing to discuss. The draft was not exciting at all. Yeah, let's- Bummer sauce. So here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna talk about the draft. Yeah, let's do that. We're gonna talk about- We're gonna get some grades. Yeah, let's grade it. And we're gonna do grade each pick. Okay. And then we're going to- Now in all fairness. Yes. I really only watched the first round. Oh. again proving what kind of super fan you are. I was volunteering my time. Yeah, there's a thing called TiVo. I'm not TiVo-ing the draft. You just skip to our picks. It's awesome. I can watch this whenever, but. I know, and I did. Oh yeah, we're at this resort. Yeah, so you might hear some background noise. Like golfers. Yeah, we're on a golf course. We literally are. We're on the eighth hole. All right, so let's get to it. So we watched this together, we were at a restaurant. We were at a sports bar, we were kind of at another event, and so we didn't have time to kind of go home and watch it. Although I would go home and watch it again that night. And sort of sitting there, comes on, you know, I think they had the sound on, didn't they? Yeah, we made them put this out. Yeah, they put the mouse. It was really crowded. So they brought people there. It was a lot of fun, because it was fun, because a lot of jet fans there. Lodge have fans. Lodge have fans. Well, yeah. Picking two and three. Two and three. You're going to be out watching it. So let's just talk. First pick comes around that day, the day before. Yeah. It came out. Baker. Yeah, it kind of came out 24 hours in advance. Baker was going to be there, guy. So I think Schefter had it, and. What's her name? Mary Kate Cabot?
00 Jake: I think she's kind of a pretty popular writer in the Cleveland area. I don't know. She had it too. I remember going back and forth with you and saying, there's a big, big thing going around that Baker's going one. It's funny because the Browns did an incredible job of keeping that secret because, I actually read about how they did it, so they had the draft board, right? And at the top, so you know how the chits are horizontal. Your name, Atwood, Edelstein, whatever. That just happened. Whatever, they're gonna find us and kill us. Those are two things. Why are you telling people that my last name's Atwood? Oh, that's true. So then they had the four quarterbacks and instead of having them stack ranked at the top. They had them on their side. And they had them in the side in which they actually went to visit them. So if you looked at it, you saw these four names, Mayfield, or what it was, it's like Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen. And it didn't matter because they knew who they wanted. And they were horizontal or they were vertical, not horizontal. So it was kind of when you looked at it, you're like, oh, I have no idea what. Like, what's what here? So that was kind of cool. And they kept it a really big secret. Because again, up until, I mean, up until 24, 40 hours, there was no chance. There was no chance that that guy's going to drop, that Donald's going to drop. Although I think you did predict it. I did. Yeah. If you go back to 297. 297, you did predict it. I did say that he would fall because of exactly what happened. Although I thought that the Browns were going to pick Josh Allen and not Baker Mayfield. So they pick him, we looked at each other across the table and went like, oh crap, this could happen. And we're like, yeah, probably the the Giants won't be that dumb to pass on him. Right. A generational quarterback. Right. Why would they pick a running bat? Although I thought that they should pick the running bat. That will last for five years when their quarterback currently will last for two. Well, I, well, two, three, four. Anyway, I thought it was a better pick. Again, the grades on them are wild, way from Fs to As. Again, he was the most dynamic, highly rated prospect coming out in the entire draft, but if you just went overall. So you are picking the best player in the draft. I by picking the best player in the draft. We've done it twice in six. Without need this this I think hit at need for them. Yep, and the best you get the best and the need and their GM Doesn't shy away from drafting first-round running backs He's done it before and he was the GM of a team that went to the Super Bowl and then and later They actually picked up a quarterback, which That didn't make sense to me. I thought that was stupid. If you think David's, if you think web, again, new GM, so they're going to pick a flyer on a quarterback. Right, fourth rounder. Fourth round flyer. Yeah, like Petty, whatever. Who's cut, by the way. You're still ready, or what?
01 Jake: You ready for Petty? I am ready for Petty. I'm excited for Sam. No, I'm damning, Darnold. Justin: Super something? Super Sam. Super Sam. Jake: It's not actually good. It's not an easy name to do things Arnold. I'm just Arnold Actually got Arnold in it Sam rhymes with am Wait, what I am Sam so we then it then happened and we were like, oh my god We're gonna pick Rosen at this point. We're gonna pick Like Sam Donald and we're hoping and they actually started throwing the videos up there with Sam Donald very quickly It's like holy crap. This is gonna happen Yeah But of course as Jess fans like did we really want Mayfield all along and then the rumors for the next day But so it in the third pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft the New York Jets selected quarterback out of USC Justin: Sam Donald. Sam. What's your feeling? Jake: So it's been days like it's been almost. Love it. Love it. Cause I love it more. Thought he was the best player wanted Baker. Cause I didn't think we had a chance at this guy. It was just a cross off. We talked about it during last week. You had him just like forget it. He's going. I just didn't want to fall in love with him. I did. I didn't have it. I was like. Yeah, cuz he was one on he was one on the Jets board and apparently Bulls said to McCagnon Like it doesn't matter. We're not getting him. He's going one not get like he's the consensus He's going one like or he'll go to like yeah, like we're not getting him at three and we're not trading up again So let's you know, whatever But they went out for dinner with them and they loved him. They wanted him bad. And they got him. It was awesome. Great job, Mac. Great job getting up to three to be in the position to make it happen. Could we have gotten him his eggs? No. We would have had to make the trade right then and there, and it would have cost way more. Good job. That trade could go down. Let's hope and pray as Jess fans. That trade could go down in one of the best trades we've ever made ever. Great job as of right now. We saw people made trades in that draft that were worse. Like to move and give up first rounders to move up. Yes. So it's like we did... Who picked... Caroline. No. The Saints gave up a first-rounder next year to come up to draft a defensive end. Like in the teens. We still have our first-rounder next year and we might suck and that's fine. And it might be a dynamic player that we could help Darnold. Exactly. Next year now is like get Darnold on the field, get him comfortable. It's his team. the year after. Right. That's it. I want it to be this year. I It brings a- it But how, how do you not pick the the I and,.
00 Jake: When it's not like EJ manual. Right. Because remember that draft? There was like just EJ manual is the only first round quarterback and it was like That he's not even that good. And then Gino dropped us in a second. Gino dropped, right? So it's like, I feel like, again, I knew Cleveland was gonna fuck that up somehow. And they did. Well, so I could see this draft of the five guys who went because they went, the Ravens came back in. They could all be very good. This could be like, we just have this amazing draft where. I think two of them will be good. I can't tell you who they're gonna be though. I just know that the odds will tell me that two of these guys are the mean. Well, I'm just saying where all the guys went so we can skip out of all that. So I don't think Baker's gonna be good. You don't? Nope. Just because the Browns have it. It's Browns against... If you were on the Jets, he would have been great. He might have had a chance, but... And people would have said, ah, that's too Jetsy. He would be a fuck up there too. Darnell won't be though. It's different. See, Donald is a Bulls guy. Remember I kept saying like, he's a Bulls guy. He's a hardworking dude who works on his issues. Like, they get pointed out via coaching. He fixes them. He has no ego about it. He just gets better. Start the season at 21 years old. That's right. Start the season in 21. And he will compete for sure. He couldn't even drink when they took him out for the dinner. Like legit. But he will definitely compete. Um, he's durable. He's big. He's elusive. He's fast. He has a good arm. Above average arm. Yep. Like, and he's intelligent. Yeah, I didn't know. I didn't know as, like... My whole thing with him when I watched him play in college, I saw him play two games this past season, was I didn't like the way he threw the ball. It wasn't like where he threw the ball, it was like how it looked. But I guess I gotta get over that a little because he can get coached up and fix that a little. And when I watched him throw, it looked like Phillip Rivers. You ever watch Phil Rivers? It doesn't look right when he throws the ball. Really? No. It just doesn't, he just doesn't look, it just looks, I don't know, this sucks coming from me, but like, when you watch Tom Brady throw a football, you're like, that guy was born to throw a football. Yeah, he could play Peyton Manning. I don't think he threw a great football. Oh, he did when, not in his, in the last two years, but... when he was at the cult destroying the defense. He never threw a beautiful ball. What? He never really threw a beautiful spiral. He just was really good at knowing where to go with it. But either way, but when you watch a guy like Tom Brady just throw, it's like wow, that arm was meant to throw. Um, Donald doesn't look that way. He's gonna have to learn his... And they judge these things at the, you know, at the decimal point level, like your release time. But his release time is not slow. Like they've done some... But it's gonna get better, because he has this loopiness that I'd never...
02 Jake: Again, if you watch Rivers... Rivers has this loopiness to his delivery, but he shortened it So it's like this very loose like very quick loop and they say he has actually one of the fastest releases Rivers services because he's gotten rid of this sort of loopiness And and again, I think it comes from his athleticism the fact that he has a multiple sport athlete Yep, I love that about guys that don't Yeah, that's like, whoa, he's got probably way better feet than he would have had if he didn't play basketball. Like, you play basketball, you are moving laterally like crazy. Like, your feet, your footwork is very important. To me, it's those stats that say, whoa is his, I mean, the one stat that we're just cramming on, which we'll figure out, but it's turnovers. Turnovers. Fumbles too. Fumbles mostly. Well, fumbles mostly. Fumbles. There was not a talent around him in wide receivers in that second year. So there's some of the interceptions, whatever. There are a couple plays that go bad, right? They just the ball bounces wrong or you're sliding and... That's his... And that's... People sort of compare him to like... Tony Romo, like his sort of playmaking ability, his loosiveness. That's good by me. Yeah, I never won anything, but he was a very good quarterback. And one person compared him to like Brett Favre without the cannon. Like he's going to play like that. So if he's going to play like that without the cannon, you're going to throw a couple picks. Yeah, it's going to happen. And we've lived through these quarterbacks that throw the picks. Well, it's just. don't throw them at the wrong, like it's never the right time to throw a pick, but like how about like not at your own 10 or not in the fourth quarter when you you're trying to win the game. So that's what I,. a a the H lawmaker- I that Doesn't shy away. I think he'll be great with the media. I think he'll frustrate the fuck out of the media good That's fine. I think you'll be very smart about it. He'll be a great coachable guy. I what I am my now concern is that we are signed this conservative team and There'll be this start of this like well who gives us a better chance to win games and I think for a 20 year old Guy I think he just needs to play Yeah, and he's an experience and I don't think you get a lot of experience at the third quarterback I don't think you get all experiences of backup not in this NFL not all the rules you need reps No, he needs to play what I would ultimately happen is It's not my count what will ultimately happen is In the preseason, he's going to get a lot of reps. And if they do that, I'll be happy. And if he looks halfway competent, like, OK,
01 Jake: you ran a pro style offense, so he knows how to do it. Good. Right. Check. Lug up on a lot of dudes coming into the league. And including Bridgewater, did Bridgewater run a pro offense in college? Yes. He did? Absolutely. I'm in Patrino. Ran a pro. pro style offense, wasn't a runner like he was a pocket thrower. But what's gonna end up happening is they're gonna see probably by game three, in the preseason, they'll know, can he play week one or not, right. Right. And then they'll cut Bridgewater. Or try to trade him or they may try to trade him. I don't think he's worth anything on the market But well depends we talked this last time Injuries have to happen in order for him to be worth anything It's if it didn't happen this year They'd be the first time ever that a quarterback doesn't get hurt So that's not it's going to happen that I usually have some multiple players. It's gotta happen to the right team, too Like a team, like, you would look at Arizona and say, oh, well, Sam Bradford's gonna get hurt. Right. But they drafted Rosen. And so that's not a thing, right? They're not going to trade for Teddy Bridgewater. There's no purpose. You've got to look for a team that doesn't have a backup that is either the heir apparent or can really play. Right. So we all we think it's great. I can't wait I want them to put there I would just want to put the and I think it'll happen I think because we moved up I think for every reason we're gonna get we want the most fun thing to think about is last year When not this time for Sam. Yeah, the suck for Sam and then it was like we saw things for Sam There's going to be there's gonna be this like timeline and kind of like the ten things that need to happen for us to like get Sam Donald and We got them all they all happened, and that's pretty freaking amazing to trade The only thing that we could have done better was lose more games But that would have been frustrating we had to give up three picks in order to because we won two more games And we should have or three more games We should have ready to give those so those two first two second round starters by the way Should be. And second round picks should be burgers. So like when I was claiming, like, why are we starting this guy who can win a couple more games? That's what that's learned. It's like, we didn't need to win those games. Like, we could have started Hackenberg and lost every fucking game and gotten the first pick on the draft. Or...or... I know. But you have all this thing of like, chemistry and all that. Look at it now. Now it doesn't matter. All the chemistry that McCown has with anybody. No, it's great. It's great that he did that it's great that he built that because they truck if he said there he will gladly bless Darnold as the starter and teach him and coach him. Yeah, gladly and that means a lot because the guys respect him. Yep So if he blesses it, it means a lot. But I want to be all behind Donald. It's like Christian Hackenberg won four games last year, just on the strength of the defense, somehow.
00 Jake: Christian Hackenberg won four games. If. If. If. If we started him week one, and like, you know, the defense will win you a couple games. They do. And he has one good game. And maybe we, like, the game would be Jacksonville. We ran for like 300 yards. Right. How the fuck does that happen? But it happened. So what if we win like four games with Hackenberg? Now you're stuck in this spot because you're like, oh, we saw some flashes maybe. And like, do we need a quarterback? Is there a controversy then? Like there's no controversy here. That is true. The Packenberg's done, or Bridgewater's done, whatever. Either of those two guys are gone. McAllen's on the team, definitely, and doesn't give a lick if he starts. But he can. He's just gonna, like, $10 million. But he can. Right. Yeah. He's a $10 million backup when you're paying nothing to the starter. It's the, it is the Eagles model. When's the last time that we had two? under twenty six first round quarterbacks. Yeah, right. Bridgewater is the first rounder. We have two first round quarterbacks on our team. It's just that he hasn't really played in two years, so you don't know what he is. Still young. Like if we it's not like we had a first rounder who's like 37. And if McAdnan can turn that into a draft pick anything, anything, then he's a genius for signing. Turn it into some like. Whatever you draft pick like a fourth rounder whatever Anything for next year because or Howard a second because it'd be nice ever or whatever Yeah, all right. So all right. He's a guy feel very I feel sorry for so second round not a lot done Nope But uh curse. Okay. He's great. Yeah, I would say you know if you you can actually receiver if you added him in to our draft, we say, okay, we've got a starting possession receiver in the second round. Starting possession receiver who doesn't cost a lot of money. We also don't do great picks the same round. No, we're terrible second round draft teams. So it's like, fine. Third round comes around and we pick up Nathan Sheppard. Shep. Shep, Shep Attack, who has one of the most fascinating stories, like if you haven't heard the story, I won't repeat it now. Um, Defensive lineman. Okay, so we lost Mo. Yes, we lost Mo. This is a Mo replacement-ish. Ish. I think he's a bigger guy. They might be playing more of a traditional 3-4 now. I can see that. Because last year they were like... Sort of going back and forth with this three four four three nickels thing that they were playing like a three three, you know weird Because of Darren Lee sighs right so he can do some weird things But this dude is probably gonna fight for that starting defensive end. So let's give it a great I'm gonna give it like he's from Fort Hayes. I've never seen him play We did need
01 Jake: That position so for that reason because it was a need I'm gonna give it a B But I don't I don't really know a whole lot about him because who does Fort Hayes, right? I I I do give it a B. I would probably say something really interesting to me though the other day that Not to repeat the whole story, but you did mention not You know he carried his tape. Well his tape Isn't wasn't like ever because he was at Fort Hayes and he was a dominant player at Fort Hayes All right clearly you are if you're getting drafted in the NFL and you're and you're at a d2 school, right? Right. It's a d2. Yep, so you're clearly better than everyone on the field and you're getting double teamed on every single possession. Which is what happened to Leonard Williams last year. It's like, whoa, what happened to his numbers? Well, he's getting double teamed on every possession. Especially Mo wasn't on the field, which was the last three or four games. And no one needed to double him anyway at this, at that point in his career. He was just collecting checks. So. It's like his stats weren't there and it's like all right. Well, he's still a really fucking good player Like if you single if you singled him he's gonna dominate the ad that's where he stood out senior bowl So when he went to the senior bowl and no one knew who this guy I want the guy from four days and they were like fuck him just go he dominated right? Yeah, so that's good because now you're playing against real competition and his history his story I think he's a character guy like the guy couldn't afford college went and worked at work to earn money for like nine months. Like having a very big on character bulls clearly very big on character guy. This is a guy who I think and we will talk about this at the end that we should write this down to talk about our our receiver and how his and his character non character guy. Yeah, because he needs to go. Well, all right, let's keep going. So third pick, that's good. Will you give it a B? And then in the fourth round, Chris Herndon, tight end. Tight end. From Miami. From Miami. Miami has a good history of tight ends, like churning out good professional tight ends way, way back, I guess. I think it probably started with like maybe Jeremy Schocki. And then, Kyle Winslet Jr. Trying to think of all the guys who come out of Miami because there have been so many. Last year was in Joku. Prior to that. Which Joku he's in, Bucks. He's on Cleveland. Cleveland, okay. Yeah, so Baker will be thrown to him. But there were a couple others in the middle and I feel stupid for not... knowing exactly who they are, because they were like, number one picks, number one picks, like these tight ends out of Miami. It's like, it's like tight end university. And this guy was stuck behind in Joku, who was just drafted last year. So this was his year to shine. I think he got hurt. So I'm going to give the grade of a C minus because...
02 Jake: I feel like we're kind of picking on reputation and not necessarily like knowing What he can do, but it has a high potential as a fourth-round pick to actually have an impact on the team and It's also a need we need a tight end and a tight end is a rookie quarterback's best friend, right? So if these guys can connect Right off the bat with each other because they'll probably be taking reps in practice together through the rookie a camp mini camp and Then because they'll probably be you know right away They're not gonna give Donald the starter reps and right away. They're not gonna give her in the starter reps. Well have them have the same reps together and let them grow a chemistry. So this has upside, but I'm gonna give it a C minus for now. I did C plus just because I feel like while it was in need, because the one thing they didn't, they didn't help the offensive line in the draft at all. And that, to me, this is where I would have liked to see that, like the other stuff, these weight picks, I mean, because basically anything beyond four, these are just special teams, guys. These are just... I mean, I went back. Yeah, but guess what? This is this is that attitude is what? Fucked our team up for a couple years I hear you but I went back and looked at all my draft pick But my 10 of them used to draft Anybody in six or seven around that didn't do anything But my 10 of them used to draft like three guys Yeah, I know I remember that draft Trade around draft three guys, draft four guys Yeah And then three years later, you're like wait our special teams suck Right Why? Oh, because we only drafted three players three years ago. Like those are the special teams guys now. Like that's where they're supposed to be. Playing special teams like these. Some of these guys are going to make the team because of that. Because they're fast. But not this tight end. I mean, this tight end. Well, no, this tight end is supposed to play tight end, but not. Not the next pick. That's just why. So then next pick. So then there was trades galore. So on the third day, this was how we must have like traded, traded, traded. Well, so this is why it would have been nice if you watched it because there was this crazy set of trades. So up came the, we basically swapped. with Vikings once and then swapped back with them again. Like in this double thing, we went down 10, they went up, we went down 10 spots and then when it came down to us, we then re-swapped with them and basically, like just kind of bounced around with the same team, trading back the same picks. Weird. Yeah, and it's this whole set, I don't even know the numbers of whatever. At the end of the day, we ended up with six. Or three six round picks and so what happened to our fifth? Well, we traded that out To move up to move in the sixth No, we can't give you six to move up and you wouldn't give you 50. Yeah, like what happened there We let them take it they took and gave us two So for two that we swapped back for two six So I see we picked back to back. Yeah, I think back to back
04 Jake: Which the last time we did that was we picked up Quincy Nuna. Was it back to back? Back to back, yeah. So I would say this is the next one. So in the sixth round with the hundred seventy nine pick, the New York Jets select Perry Nickerson, cornerback Tulane. This is the one everybody's excited about because return skills. You know that he's like a very easy steal. He's one of the fastest guys in the compound. He combined. He actually. played, I think, three years at Tulane, and he was good. He just kinda fell, right, because corners sometimes don't, you know, fell. So this is the guy that like, this is the push screen a lot and could be the starter over screen, so. Did he play outside or inside? He's gonna have to play inside, because we have the outside guys. Yeah, we have outside guys, but they're not forever guys. Like the one guy is a three year guy. was even on the team that turned into anybody. And it was you could just you got to go back a while. You could not for offensive line. Well, Brandon Shell was just two years ago. These are starting right tackle. But like I found quarterbacks in the in the late rounds. I found corner running backs and like in just none of them, like they were just one hit wonder. I mean, they were gone. So to me, I don't get too excited about picks. Quincy Leera. Yeah, he was a fourth-founder though, right? No, sixth. 36. Yeah, once every 10 years you might find somebody. So again, when you look at three, the point is when I look at three guys in the sixth round, I don't go, there's three starters. It's like there's three guys, two of which might not even, you know, be doing anything on the team. So I like this pick. Again, it's a six rounder, so I'm not gonna get all excited. I'll give it like a B minus. Kinda like the speed and- How fast is he? I think he was one of the fastest. Like maybe the fastest in the combine. Great, I love speed. Speed is good. Speed's great. Speed's always good. He's got too much. Makeup speed's good. He's a 5'10", 5'11 guy, so he's not like how- He's like he's gonna be a slot corner. Or like that's where he's gonna play in the nickel. So happy with that and then we go out and pick a... You didn't even ask me my grade. Oh, what's your grade? I'm gonna just copy yours. Okay, exactly. Because you didn't watch the frickin' draft. I just like the speed. I like that we have one of the fastest players. Is he a returner? Can he return? I don't think so. The running back's a returner. The running back is the who's gonna be the returner. We have like, we have some guys to really push. Some veterans that are on the team. That is good. Competition is good. And then this one is the one I know the least about, of everything. For Foranso Fatukasi, defensive end Yukon. This is the one that I just don't know. I don't know anything about him. Literally nothing.
00 Jake: He couldn't find much. He might not even make the team. Who knows? Yeah, this is like... Although, look, we drafted... We drafted two defensive linemen and traded for a third in the draft. We really did need defensive linemen. So, for that reason, I'm going to throw this right in the middle. Just a C. Yeah, I'm giving you a C. Who knows? It just feels like... We just needed it. I just don't know. We needed a defensive end. We don't have any. And then a few picks later, we picked a small, fast running back. Trenton Cannon running back from Virginia State. Can you catch the ball? I don't know. I'm not like a dance bros type Watch the draft when they showed his highlights They don't these rounds that I don't show big highlight packages like four seconds and it actually just swaps by that's true This is like okay. I kind of like this cuz if it's a returner we need a returner I'll give it like a B minus fine and You know, could be an interesting interesting watch. I'm just going to give it a C. I'm going to stay right in the middle. And then we traded out our sevens and picked up Harry Anderson, the defensive end, who's a second or third round pick a couple of years ago off the top of my head. Little flame out with the Colts. He got injured. And they're switching from, I don't know, four, three. Four, three, four. Yeah. And so it's like. Because who's there? Didn't they hire? Wait, they were the ones who were hiring Josh McDani? So who did they end up with? I don't know. I forgot. That's bad. I don't know. It's not my team. I know, but... Give a shit. We should know that. It's somebody. They got also ran. Who hired Matt Patricia? Matt Patricia went to the Lions. They're gonna suck. That I know. In that you didn't know that? Shame on you. We're going to kick their ass on week one. They're going to suck. He's not a good coach. We'll see. That Patriots defensive sucked for a while. I understand, but he's now the head coach. And he's going to be bad at it. We'll see. I know it. We'll see. It's going to be great. Week one's going to be a tough one in Lions, Monday night. But shit. it. Let's get darnold out there in the big light That's right. That's the only thing I want to see anybody but darnold I don't even care if he loses. Get him out. He won't trust me that team's not gonna be good great Get him out there in the light great big time. I am I'm time Maybe I think I tweeted this the other day like I have not felt This excited about the draft About this team like this much hope for almost ten years. That's cuz we rebuilt we have now Rebuilt and we've done the one thing that has been whatever. So let's give this a grade I'm gonna give a see cuz I know nothing about it seems like a flyer I know nothing about him either, but I guess if you Trade your seventh round pick for a guy that was picked two years ago in the second that seems good. I guess Debs, I don't know Doesn't matter It doesn't matter. You could have like gone out there and picked a you know a bunny rabbit. It doesn't really matter. I'm going to throw it right in the middle too.
00 Jake: Alright let's go overall. What's your feeling? I feel I feel great because we picked Arnold. Like it's an A. It's an A draft. You got your quarterback. And even if he's not. Good right still a good draft still a good pick like it's the right It's the pick they did the they make the best pick in the draft was picked by the Jets Thank you, New York Giants. Thank you Cleveland Browns I don't think the Cleveland Browns are just idiots all around but the Giants are smarter than that. I said that last week and I thought it was just gonna be because of Josh Allen. So let's talk about that Josh Allen. What? Where the five guys went? Well, Baker went to the Browns. We play him this year. Yes! Week three, I think. Josh Allen went to the Bills. We play them twice this year. Now he will start. I do not think we're gonna see Baker Mayfield. Oh, no way. Why not? Because I think we're gonna see Tyron Taylor. That's great. I'd rather see the rookie personally. Terrod Taylor's beaten us before, you know, a handful of times. When, when, when, when, when, when, Dorevis is covering a guy or not covering a guy, that's when you lose Terrod Taylor. Um, but I don't think we're gonna see Baker because it's early in the year. I think we're gonna see him. I never saw him. I'm pretty certain we're gonna see Josh Allen. Definitely nobody up there. I mean what they made a McCann who's gonna he's gonna fight for that job, but good I know we'll see him at least once Josh Allen, right? We do not play the Cardinals so Rosen went to the Cardinals. Yep We do not play the Ravens right but He Jackson wouldn't be playing anyway unless flacko got hurt I don't think they would do that. They're not gonna do it But but if he starts to struggle I could see them put him in I mean Well, they're out of the league if they're like out of the playoff hunt then maybe they do it just to see They gave up stuff. I wonder what that means for RG 3 Probably it means you're like I think him and TaeBridwater should go like try to form their own team. Yeah old well teams do carry three But they only dress two it'll be interesting who dresses Again, if I could wave my magic wand I want Bridwater off our team Yeah, me too. I don't want anywhere. It's just too much of a like oh he could be good I don't want no. Hackemery we know bad. I just don't want him on my team. Let him be the third string I don't even care who the third string is It's Hackenberg. It's fine. If you're on your third string quarterback, you're probably losing a lot. I don't. I don't. I mean, yes, if you get anything from... I don't want to take any reps away from Darnold. So wait. So Baker went to... Baker Mayfield went to the Browns. Darnold, we know, came to the Jads at three. 10 Rosen. No, sorry. Rosen went to the Cardinals. Or sorry, Alan went to the Bills first. Yeah, sorry. They traded up to get up, to get to Alan. They actually got their guy. Like, they got him. Seems that way. He could have went first. I mean, they got a guy who could have went.
00 Jake: All of them could have went first. That's the thing. I don't think anybody's going to pick Alan first. That was just a smokes, smokescreen. No one had him graded at first. A lot of people did. That's ridiculous. And then. Inconsistent. No, I think he's gonna be terrible in Buffalo. Windy, cold, how are you gonna throw the ball? Like, dude, that's a recipe for disaster up there. Who gives a goddamn shit? He is not accurate and you just don't get more accurate. Whatever we'll see. Remember Sanchez? He wasn't active. That was the thing. Right. He his his completion percentage was in the 55 to 58 percent range his entire career never changed right was never got more accurate Doesn't happen. He got smarter. He threw less picks He did? Well, no, I mean, if you look at his stats from his rookie year to his second year to his third year And that's where I like to end it because then we fucked him over after the third year his third year Right if I off the top of my head he threw in the mid 20 in touchdowns and the low teen interceptions Not too shabby, right? But he wasn't accurate To me, this is, again, I am excited to see it. Alright, so let's keep going. So Alan goes third of the five. Then Cardinals trade up for Rosen. Probably a good move. I think Rosen's in a good position. Probably a good move for everyone involved. You've got David out. Johnson's going to be there for a couple of years. He's very good. Still got Fitz, who's still got something in the tank. One year maybe. But doesn't matter. He's a guy to throw to. They have receivers. They have speed. And they have receivers. And a running game. But again, and a new coach. And a new coach.. So you have that going for you too. And they don't Thirty million dollars a year. Yeah, what each one that gets signed will just Shouldn't have gotten what he got and then Matt Ryan you can make the argument I mean he was an MVP he made it to the Super Bowl should have won the fucking thing, right? You can you can definitely make the argument that he's like a top five quarterback Definitely top 10 and Aaron Rodgers will be next. Well, that's the thing if I aren't right if I'm Aaron Rodgers, I'm just sitting back I'm like I'll just wait as long as I possibly can Because the next one the hips will just be higher than that and next one after that would be higher than that So you just be like I want to be the highest when the highest is the highest kind of have to tip your cap Again for the second time on this fucking podcast to Tom Brady. Yeah, he just wants to win
01 Jake: he never was the highest paid and seemingly doesn't care. I think he makes a lot of good money. He makes plenty of money. And he also has the long game. His money will be made. for the next 20 to 30 years in New England. Well, not even that shit. He's a celebrity. TB12 is going to make him a ton of money. He will be able to be a speaker. He will be like, again, when you go down as the greatest of all time. of any player of the game ever. I mean like we're- That's where he is. That's what the ranking is. He will be one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever. Number one. Quarterbacks and or players. Number one in his era. Number one. And he played in the era of Peyton Manning. Right. And he was better. So beat him. I think and I think he's going to make. I think he's going to make a boatload of cash. Plus he's got a wife. It makes hundreds of millions of. Oh, yeah. Like he's not hurting for money. Yeah, he wants money. I think. Again, it kills me on my inside of my soul But like I would chop off, you know my pinky to have him on our team like 20 years ago how about like Left testicle. Yeah, Oh Right testicle, which one's a good one? Well, which one's your good one? They're both good nice which one's lower though I know that bike ride this morning pushed them right up into my Anyway, so we both have these A's and then we have Jackson going In the lot so last pick comes Philly. They don't need it. They just want a Super Bowl They've got a quarterback. They don't need it. They literally don't need it and they got damn sign foals They should, because again, Wens doesn't make any money. So let's talk about that, because I think that brings us to where this JES team has... and also try to keep the team together. Because look at Seattle, they're done. They're done. They didn't make the playoffs last year. And they lost a lot of talent. And the Rams are in their division. And the Niners are in their division. And they're coming up. And they're better. And they're better now. So that window closes fast. So I'm saying, while we might have our quarterback for 10 years, I mean, who knows? Well, yeah. Russell will be with a barring injury. He'll be with Seattle forever. But. This is this weird thing like you have this window where you get these young guys who play above their pay grade Yeah, but because you lock them in though, and it's really about the quarterback and not the other position So you have five years because you can take his so he'll sign up He'll sign a five five with with the first rounder It's five with one year with the next year option that you can go the fifth. You're is the one for the first round Or you can extend at that point, right? So it's really four guaranteed and then fifth that you I think is also guaranteed but you please do with Williams
00 Jake: and at that point you then have to look at extension or whatever you have to look at our team but that second that first big quarter big one is usually not the big one they make paid like this is Matt Ryan. And it's like Kirk Cousins technically second but he was franchised twice. So it's kind of his third. Kind of. Because he made Be more excited. I just want them to handle it well. Let's talk about my young thing. We have Darnold for five years. And then other cornerstone young pieces. Let's talk about my young thing. Yep. Jamal Adams. Yep. Okay. In my opinion, that's... I guess Tremaine Johnson you kind of have to throw in there as like a cornerstone piece. Yeah, got him for another three years. On the offensive side of the ball, not as clear. You got Eli Maguire from last year. No? This is not, I mean you're comparing apples to orange. No, I'm saying you have- We're talking cornerstone, cornerstone dudes. Okay. Jamal Adams is a potential pro bowler. But how many cornerstones do you need? You only need like Three or four you don't need 20. Well, you need a handful on each side of the ball. We Inoune, if he can come back, he can play. This is, this is still a young dude. Those are all two, three year guys. Inoune was young still. When, when Darnold's hitting his stride in three years. Nobody on this offense will be on this team. That's right, so I think that's like, if I'm predicting next year's draft with the tenth pick, the near-jet select, wide receiver, blah, blah, blah, blah. That's a, that would be a mistake. Well, whatever. You should pick a left tackle. Oh. Maybe, maybe. I mean, it wouldn't be... That would be the right pick. Well, there are some others years ago who become... Never the right pick. If you have the quarterback... Odell Beckham. If you have the quarterback... Would you not be happy with an Odell Beckham type of... If you have the quarterback... Yeah. Go get the left tackle. T T T T T T T T T T T T We'll see. I think this is all in the coaches. Two more things. Yeah, one, I'm pissed off that the Pats drafted
02 Jake: the guy that they drafted in the first round. The running back. He's awesome. Yeah, I don't know if I'm pronouncing his last name, Michelle or Michael. I think it's Michelle. Yeah. He's fucking awesome. Yep. Saw him play in the because Georgia was in the those bowl games. The final games. and I was so impressed with him. Chubb, Nick Chubb, not the running back Chubb, they were a one-two. But Michelle is way better. And he's in the perfect fucking spot. Cause he's basically. Dion Lewis, James White, but better. I mean, for all you fantasy Knicks, don't. Go draft him. No, don't. Stay the fuck away from it. He's good. Because his first fumble, he can never play again. No, he's very good. Doesn't matter how good he is. And then let's finish with our team. Yeah. And Robbie Anderson and his nonsense. Well, but the thing that came out today actually wasn't a thing. It was a mistake. It was a mistake by the judge. So like it's. He's actually still on the same thing we talked about through the show. It's still nonsense though. Well, no, because it's the same thing. It's a mistake. It's actually the judge's mistake. It's not him. But his shit is not acceptable. I agree. And I think he's on... For the culture that we're trying to build... Of character dudes... Not a good fit. I don't think he's gonna... The thing is he's a body and he's cheap and until we have him his replacement on the team Why not keep him on the team? I think he's on the shortest of shortest leashes to me Prior feels like Robbie Anderson. That's what I said last time. You're like he doesn't have a speed You're like and I was like, well, I think that's that's that guy The only thing is I guess if Robbie Anderson can have about the same year You were not having the exact opposite conversation you had last week where you were you like Robbie Anderson He's our you know, he is the number one, I in theB unfocused Music He's, I made out a arrest warrant for him and they made an old-old mistake. They just forgot to put in some paperwork. It's literally nothing. There's no difference from what happened last week. Zero. He's he's not a good character. I agree. He was just young and he made a mistake. I personally... Again. The same mistake. Again. I personally would want... our team.
14 Jake: like, get signed by some other the team Um... I That's two. Yeah, or yeah, wait usually till the week before the season starts to actually I honestly think there's going to be so much stuff going on that we're going to want to talk about it. So probably it's going to be hard to not have ones like when there's Voluntary and Darnold went 14 for a day against nobody. That's right. Anyway, it's for all you just fans. I think it's a good time to be a just fan. It feels very unjetsy. What happened? We actually got the luck. It landed in our lap. The I think almost everything right. Now we got to leave it up to football. And I think all the pressure in our lap is off McEgnaen who I think did an amazing job is now on bulls. Yeah, the team is the team's right. It's it's right. It's ready to rock and they have money next year. So. Like dude has done a really good job. And that is what it does take a little bit of patience. And we learn it the hard way. Oh, what a great decision that he made last year to just clean it up. Clean up the culture, clean up this veteran nonsense. I should think the Browns are going to be good. Like you would think what they will all the picks they have on their team now You can either say that that or that stadium is just cursed But like they should have went and got a new coach. It's just stupid to have a loser In there, but they could do what the Rams did you pick like what about one year? but the thing is what the Rams did was they replaced a defensive head coach with a Offensive mind. Yeah You Jackson's an offensive mind, but he's won one game in two years. I know he's and he's the Peter principal Definition he's an excellent offensive coordinator If the Jets hired if he was fired by the Browns and then we got rid of Morton and then we went and signed him up to be our OC. I'd be happy Yeah, he's an excellent offensive coordinator. I'm not a head coach. I want bowls to go back and look at what Rex Ryan did with Sanchez in those first couple years and I want him to study it and figure out the things that were done poorly and figure out the things that were done well
00 Jake: because I think there's this again we have this incredible couple year window that but to me it's all about getting him as much work as possible and I don't I just don't believe in this stuff anymore. Every damn team I've seen with the new quarterbacks, get them out there. I know we can all go back and say there's like these three, but there's so many who come in and just start playing and let's get them playing. Let's get them playing. Let's see what we got. Because I think this is the answer. And next year, in April of next year, we can be drafting someone other than a quarterback. When Mel Kuyper goes, just needs, they're gonna go, well, they got their quarterback last year. So this year they need. ... a wide receiver and they need a left guard or whatever. Great. Great. All right, that's it. Justin and Jake saying, for reals, let's go, Chats. ["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
