19 Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom Podcasts Longest Running New York Jet Podcast. Ever. I'm Jake, joining, joining me 294 times in a row. Justin, how you doing Justin? I'm alright. aI'm actually better than alright. You're better than alright? Yeah. Alright, alright, alright. Yeah. Why are you better than alright? Well, the Patriots lost a Super Bowl. That happened. Yeah. And, you know, baseball season's around the corner. Yanks are looking pretty good. Yeah, terrible. No one cares about that. All those things. How about the, freedom team's about to come up. We got the draft to look forward to. That's all like football stuff, whatever. Football stuff is the only way. All right, so let's talk about it. Let's talk about the game. The game that was. First, let's set the scene. Great Super Bowl, and and Where were you and how many parents were in your apartment when you launched it? All of the parents. All of the parents. Yes. All the parents were there. All of them. Every single parent I have. There you go. They were all there. At least the first half were there. Really? Yeah. First of all, I want to say besides it just makes me happy knowing the Patriots lost, which I'm always happy with. I'm very happy when this is one of the first Super Bowls I think I've ever been able to watch. And I think for the last couple of years I've gone to the parties and gone to whatever and I usually stay in the living room or the kitchen and there's a TV and first of all the place where I went the TV in the kitchen which is like up on the wall smallish went to black and white so that was like a no for me. And then they have like a little room around the side that the kids were in. I basically kicked out and I'm big TV and I just sat there by yourself Well one of the people come in and out But I basically just sat and watched the Super Bowl which is what I like to do by yourself by myself Or with people coming in and out bringing me drinks or food whatever I needed That's all I need. So you went to Super Bowl party and went into a room by yourself. And watched Super Bowl. It's the best. It was the best. Why didn't you just stay home? Because then I don't get the people bringing me things. Because what you want during Super Bowl, because you can't leave during commercials. , Yeah you can. They kind of stunk. No, you can't leave during the commercials. You want to watch the commercials. So you really have no time to go to do anything. So you just want people to bring you things. So people are bringing me wings. and drinks. That's hilarious. It was really good. And that was a great game. It was actually a really good game. It was a way better game than the previous Super Bowl, which you thought was the best Super Bowl ever. That still was the best Super Bowl ever. I think this was better. No. It was a great game. It had so much suspense. It had the underdog winning. Yes. It had a backup quarterback winning.
04 Jake: It was down to the wire, it was close pretty much the whole way. It was back and forth that had lead changes in the fourth quarter. It was a really great Super Bowl and tons of scoring. Who the hell? These two defenses just didn't even show up. Well, I mean, there's not there. Doesn't really have a great defense, but they have a good scoring defense to give it 41's a lot and Philly, I mean 33 to the Pats is like, okay, you did all right. Pats score, I mean, they score, right? They probably average more than 33. If you say Pats are gonna score 33, I'm saying you've lost that game every single time. And they kinda score 33, like, all the time. They were 13 and three, so yeah, they win a lot of games. Right. They were in the Super Bowl for a reason. Well, and these were the two top leaders of the NFL. This was a great game. Great game all around. Couldn't have had it any better. I really enjoyed it. Some of the huge... I thought the way the Eagles played, and this is the way you have to play the Patriots, and I don't know why every coach doesn't just pick this up and why the Steelers... You have to go get three more balls. so that you come to the game with five balls. And just use all of them. Use all the balls. All the balls. He's actually, he's talking about his sack. Like literally testicles. Yeah, and they did, they played very aggressive. They played like, there was no other game, there was no other time. We're gonna try to score, we're gonna go for it, we're gonna. We're gonna do all the things they went for it on fourth down a couple times They went for two-point conversions when it wasn't necessary That was stupid. I mean they just went for it. They really went for we're gonna go for it and it worked And it and you keep because I think that's you know That's what the Patriots want you do is play a little conservative because they don't have to play conservative They don't generally play conservative. They play balls the wall. They're gonna score a lot. They're gonna try to score If they give them two seconds left in the half, they're going to try to score with that two seconds. Sometimes they score slow. Sometimes they score fast. They do whatever they want generally on offense and they kind of did. I mean, they scored 33 points. Philly did an excellent job in the fourth quarter. of keeping Tom Brady off the field. Right. Well, that's also important. You got to they had like a seven minute drive after after. New England took the lead 33 32. Right. With about nine minutes left. The Eagles didn't give them the ball back until. Around two minutes left right and that's kind of what you need to do. You need to hold the ball It's dangerous to give Tom Brady any time right, but you take that lead What they didn't do is hunt like the reason the Jets lose the Jets lose this to this team is You punt back to them then they score then you then you try to score and then you punt back them again And then they score then they go up on you too much and then you're then you're off your pace
02 Jake: They also look at the time possession which I think is extremely important, 34 to 25. That's huge. It's a 10 minute swap of time possession. Well, they had the ball. The Eagles could just run when they wanted to run. They could pass. Foles played out of his little mind. The Eagles running backs. They ran for a decent amount of yardage, but also Corey Clement was their leading receiver with 100 yards. It's like they're running backs. Went for over 250 yards. That's that's right out of the pay tracing throw into the throw into the running back Having a lot of them they because the Pats have a slow linebackers. They just crushed them that way Yeah, and that was an awesome touchdown catch by Corey Clement. That was kind of like the play of the game Well, I thought that they had a bunch of awesome touch to play the game. I thought were the one. Philly Philly? No, the Philly special Nick Foles called it. He called that point. He called it. They went over to the sideline. They had called a timeout. They're on the goal line. And Nick Foles leans over and Doug Peterson, he goes, Philly, Philly, and Pearson looks at me like, yeah. He goes, yeah, we got it. And, uh, he's like, all right, do it. Comes back in the huddle calls it nice fucking worked. That's fucking awesome. That's awesome That is so awesome. Like your your quarterback's so locked in and he's like, I got it. I got it Let's just do the Philly Philly. Do it Philly Philly Special whatever Yeah, I mean again It they played they played the game that you have to play to beat the Patriots I just think it's all about being aggressive and not sitting back And it's like not what Bowles does. Bowles never plays this way. He never plays aggressive. He always plays a very conservative game. Wait, can we just talk about Super Bowls? Well, I'm just saying, how are we going to win games against this team unless we can learn to play like the teams that beat them? The teams that beat them, they go balls to the wall. They don't, though. Like, when the Giants beat them in the Super Bowl, they didn't go balls to the wall. They had some luck up their ass. No, they had some luck. And then they were cutting one in the game by playing good defense. That's all. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Me too. But up until two seconds went off that clock, or the last whatever play, you know, and I know as fans that we thought the Patriots were going to win. I don't care what lead back with about 220 left.
00 Jake: And they went for two and they didn't get it. And they were up five. I said, fuck. They're about to lose by two or three or one or whatever. Fuck, fuck, fuck. And then they hadn't touched Tom Brady the entire game. Neither. There was no. Yeah. And all of a sudden, game. Yeah, there was the only sack of the game was this strip sack of Tom Brady. The one play and even Tom afterwards in the post game, he was like, they made one play. They made one play, what do you want? He threw for 500 yards. He's like, they made one play. No, he played great, Tom Brady played great. That's the other thing about this, that's what's nice about this too, is he played amazing. And Cooks was out, like the whole game. Like he got lit up in what, the first drive? So he's down Cooks, he's... Obviously Edelman's not there the whole season It's like man This is rough You throw over 500 yards to like nobody like if you look at like the receiver in core here You got Amidola with 150 Chris hoga with 120 Gronk with 115 It's like who the fuck like they got three guys with over a hundred yards. That's crazy Gronk with two touchdowns Shit! And also a lot of like special teams. Didn't they miss a... There were missed extra points at the end. And field goal. There was a bad field goal, bad snap for New England. That was very uncharacteristic of New England. Hey, you know who's the real loser in this game? Who? The Detroit Lions. Oh yeah, we can talk about that. Enjoy Matt Patricia. I'm actually not excited about it. Oh, I was thinking I thought you're talking about the other one that you didn't go Oh the cults the cults they are the other loser No, I think they're winners ultimately because they didn't pick up on the trash McDaniels is I in my opinion gonna be a good coach But he should just follow Bela check and be the coach there. Justin: Well, apparently that's the rumor. That's what's gonna happen. Jake: And him going elsewhere may or may not have worked for him. I know Matt Patricia is gonna be a terrible head coach for Detroit. Why? Because he's a terrible defensive coordinator. So why would he be a good head coach? Like it makes no sense. He's so bad. Well... Oh, just to play devil flag kit because he sat under one of the best head coaches on the planet. That means nothing. None of his guys who've ever gone off have ever really done anything. I mean, man, Jeannie had that one year. Sure. It was so good. Romeo is a fantastic head coach. Why don't we talk about the 30 for 30? The bill and bill? Yeah. The two bills? Yeah. That happened. We talked about it briefly at the end of our last podcast. I don't think we talked about it. I don't think we'd see it hadn't aired yet. Hadn't aired yet. It was airing that evening. Right. So yeah. What'd you think of it? I was amazing. Yeah, I loved it. I loved it. I, I was, because we're Jets fans and we've heard about the pieces and like
01 Jake: the thing, there had been something out about the Jets and how what it seemed like, what I was reading was, it was a disc to the jets. And when I watched it, I was waiting for this big disc. I'm like, wait a minute, you know, they're gonna be like, argh. And I knew it was something about the locker room, and I couldn't figure it out. But then they do this thing at the end, and the way it ran to me was, they basically had them in this therapy session for however long, probably three, four hours, right? Where they dug up all of their past problems, all of their issues, and basically threw them out in front of them. made them talk about it. These two guys who are, you know, don't really wanna talk about it. They were struggling. They didn't wanna talk about it. And it was painful. And you could see part of it was like painful about their relationship. So they go through this basically four hour family therapy, you know, session. And then they're like, oh, what else have we got to do? Like we've gotta do a bunch of stuff. So they did this whole thing. They'd been there for four or five hours, probably more with makeup and all that. And then they said, and And they said, oh, let's go. Oh, we have to go over and like shoot you guys walking around in the jet locker room. Well, they did the Giants first. Wait, but they'd done that at a different time. How do you know? Well, because you could tell by the sequence of where it was during the day. No, you can't. Well, okay. That's the way I took it. Did you edit it? Yes, I did. I edited it. And you could just sense. So then they said, no, we don't want, so the whole thing was they said, we don't want to go, oh, the jet locker room, I don't want to go. Whatever. Can we talk about how Parcel screwed Belichick over on multiple occasions? Oh, yeah, he totally did. Like he was such a douche to him. If he had just told him, like a couple times, this is what's gonna happen. That whole thing with getting up and that story about getting the facts, like... I mean, again, I've heard about the story of him writing it on the thing and thought that Belichick was a dick for what he did, but I hadn't heard the story of where... Belicheck or Parcells just takes it and basically just ramrows what he's gonna do like he doesn't like leave it up for discussion. Let's just go backwards a little bit before that. Oh, the seven days when he was the head coach? No, no, no. But with the Giants. Oh yeah, when he's... So Belicheck leaves the Giants to go take the job at the Browns. Right. Like right after the season ends. Which he was supportive of, he said yes. Yes, go, go, go forth, friend. But why didn't Parcels tell him, listen, I'm gonna quit in three months? Yeah. I don't know if you knew that. Like, obviously he didn't know. I mean, it's February now, right? Think about in three months from now. Losing our head coach. Just quitting. We'd be in trouble. That's what happened to the Giants, but they had Belichick sitting there! I know, well we had him twice sitting there too! We had Bill Belichick as our head coach twice. Twice, and he never coached a game for us. That's awesome! And... The greatest head coach in the history of the NFL was our coach twice. And never ever coached one game. Not one game. What I thought was interesting too was the story of like, oh and Kraft really wanted it.
00 Jake: That it's like, no, Kraft actually didn't want him the first time. Like he said no. Yeah, he did not want him the first time. He didn't want him the first time. He's like, no. He came around on him afterwards. He did, and he brought him in. Justin: He needed it for him to mature. Jake: He passed on him too. Anyway, oh and how they called him Doom? I don't know. It was really good. It reminded me how much I really liked Parcels. Like I just loved his personality. It was just, he was such a great, you know, sideline guy and such a great, and you can tell he's, he's... Thanks. He's a great leader. It is interesting to think like would have you know if you take it's always like we do with the Belichick and Brady thing like if we take them apart would they have both been successful because they've never been successful By themselves Brady's never been on a team without Belichick and won Super Bowls and Belichick's never won Super Bowls without Brady. False. As a head coach. True. Oh, yeah, but so Bell check and parcells Parcells has gone off and done other head coaching. He's been head coach of the Cowboys head coach the Jets Jets head coach of Patriots and I think it was he did some a distant with the Dolphins like he was ahead on the okay But his success is only two Super Bowls he's ever won. He's been in three. Woss won one, two. He's been in the championship I think two other times. Like if you look at his history it goes down. His whole history goes down. It's like Super Bowl, lost Super Bowl, championship. playoffs and then like I think he maybe got to the playoffs with the Cowboys but not really maybe that one game wasn't that one I'm sure he I'm sure he did. I feel like that like Yeah, game was a Parcells game. So it's kind of like a downward thing But I think one of the obviously Belicheck by himself has been very successful It was seven rings. Belicheck was with him for a majority of his head coaching tenure So with the Giants, he had Belichick with him the entire time. But in different roles too. He wasn't always, like he changed roles when he was there. No, he was a defensive coordinator. No, not the whole time. The whole story was he came in as this and he made him do this and then he went there. He changed him up a couple times. Yeah, but when they won, he was a defensive coordinator. Yes, I agree with that. And then... onward from there he was always at that level or even higher so when they moved to the Patriots so all these guys were like Belichick guys they were kind of Parcells guys right so Romeo Cornell, Charlie Weiss, Jim Schwartz who by the way just beat Belichick as the defensive coordinator on the Eagles. Scott Pioli as a personnel guy. He came across as great Pioli. Yeah. Yeah. I've always wanted Pioli to come back. Yeah. Come back anyway. A whole bunch of a whole bunch of guys. Al Gro. Yeah, I see him there.
01 Jake: These are all Parcels guys, and then they a bunch of them went with Belichick back when he went back up to New England after. Parcells left the Jets they were all on that Jets staff, right? Which is interesting because Bell check I thought he was our defensive coordinator, but he kind of wasn't know He was like an assistant head coach and definitely in charge of the defense, but we had other guys in place Wait, so do you think that Parcells by himself? Like is the magic more because it looks, we just look at it kind of on paper. It looks like Belichick was really the engine that could behind all of that. And Parcells kind of wrote him to the successes. I don't believe that. I don't know if Belichick would have gotten. What Parcells got out of the players on his own early. Right early. He's clearly gotten it out of the money now. Right. But early. Parcels got the most out of guys that were also hard to control like a Lawrence Taylor, for example. Yeah, a lot of people consider him one of the best if not the best defensive player ever. Yep. You could, I mean, he was in the thing. He didn't like Belichick at all. Right. Would he have even gotten anything out of Lawrence Taylor or would he have just gone on like Thanks for watching! Done coke all day. Yeah, seriously, I'm dead serious. I mean, I think he was anyway, right? So Like I don't I don't think that would have jibed with part with with bell check. He probably would have been like this guy's Fucking coke head. I wait, it was really good as a Jets fan. If you're a Jets fan out there go watch it If you're a football fan, just do it because it's it's a great story And there's a lot of insight a lot of insider stuff from Curtis Martins in it all the way back Curtis Martins in it Al Groh is in it a lot of ties to the Jets obviously. And then it was really interesting because they were talking about like, you know, the Parcel's way of winning and like the archetype of the team. And they were talking about, you know, this big quarterback in the pocket. A tight end, right? A slot receiver. a running game like and then they were flashing to like each team and like they flashed like to the giants and it was showing like phil sims with mark bovaro, right? and then it flashed to the jets and it was like Really intriguing because it had like, you know vinny in the pocket with wayne kerbett right like kurtis martin I was like, oh right wayne kerbett and then because then when it flashed to the pats it was like Welker and Edelman is right. Well fuck if wanker bet wasn't those guys first right, you know like He was like that's what he was He was the third down guy who was always open always open on third and would catch the ball every time every time He was great right and Bell check has taken that architecture of a team and brought it along with him all the way through. I actually think in a way almost more on offense than on defense because the defensive part
05 Jake: is changing and that's why the Pats bringing it all the way back to the Super Bowl. It's kind of why they lost this game. They didn't have linebackers to cover. Right. Lastly, the Malcolm Butler thing. Oh, so I don't know how much is real and not real in this universe because you hear rumors, you whatever. There are rumors that he was caught doing drugs. There's rumors that he was... Those are all rumors that we shouldn't talk about. Okay. Okay. I do feel like there's one rumor that we can. Is it a rumor or is it true? Well, I think they told him you're not starting. Right. And I think he was a little baby about it. And then he's like, well, fuck him. He doesn't care. Right. Belichick. He's like, well, if you're going to be a pouty little bitch, go play special teams. Right. That's it. Like you're not starting because of some match-up thing. And I think you could, I think, oh no, I don't think, I think he was punishing him. It wasn't for a match-up thing. That guy, they put the stats, he started 98% of every play. Like every defensive play. There's no way it was... There's no reason. There had to have been something. He did something. Well he was late, he came on point playing. Well then there, no he was late. So that's it. No, no, he was some sickness or something until he came on. I think they're keeping him under wraps. I think it is. Whatever, he's a free agent, he'll be a jad. It is both. It is both an amazing, I'm both like stunned and I'm a little bit, not, it's not proud. I'm a little bit, um, I think it's awesome. What he did that Belichick did that, that he stuck to his guts, stuck to his principles, like no matter what, we're even in the Super Bowl, even, even in these scenarios and even the chance and the At the high percentage chance that we might lose because I've taken my You're not just sitting Reavis because of To be fair, he's not their number one corner I see you can make you can make it Our argument you can make an argument that that game turns around if Is in that game butler's covering al shonja for even that 34 yard touchdown pass. Maybe he doesn't actually catch that ball miraculously because there's some other douche. Right. And like it's, you know, why take your second best corner and have him play special teams when he could be covering receivers. Right. Or playing in the slot or doing something. Also the guy who. I mean he made his he made his you know, we were Malcolm Buck Super Bowl because he made one point Oh Right. I already know that everybody has one play. I just I think it's ball Z I think it's great. It's hubris you I asked because of it. What else you gonna say? 41 points a lot to a backup quarterback back Let's talk about them. So go to us. We have some we have to do this
04 Jake: He's not a free agent right? One more one year so I and trade him high now to a quarterback needy team be like hey man This guy just won this one because anybody I think he's a system quarterback I'm like I watched that guy play again he played for most of that season he played and I remember him playing and thinking oh You're not I mean I can you can watch a couple if you want to Core back play ten games you can kind of go the the the Yes, there was trick poison, yes, they might have and did it, I mean they did the thing that like, even the trade for a jai, like it's, like look how brilliant. Yeah, they won the game. So look at the team, and, Fourth round no one cares because the end of the day they fucking won the Super Bowl They did so it doesn't matter if they traded away a billion picks or four thousand dollars or whatever it is for whence and they Went up they got their guy and then they wrote him and they made the decision to even have a guy behind them that was Can take over not some project but a guy who could actually take over Like, I want us as Jet fans to start thinking about that. It's like, that's where I want us to be. And I think you actually agree with me now, which is awesome. After our last podcast, you've admitted, I'll pull it up if you want me to read it to you. Well, you've said to me now, you're like, I agree with you, we should just go up and get a guy. Yes? Or pay, or pay her cousins. Or pay her cousins. I want us to open it. Again, I don't care which. I really don't even have a preference. The only thing I can think of is, the amount where we see these teams doing it doing it in the rookie wage scale it's so much easier to draft the guy and like put a lot of money just behind everywhere else you know the first year don't expect to win the Super Bowl because it just doesn't happen but you might be able to do it in year two right and-., I, or five so if you've got like a five-year window where the first year is kind of a learning curve my only worry is that our coach isn't the right coach but then we just fire them right you do the Rams you just know you see it if you go
02 Jake: Right now because for the extra because if you're gonna go on strike, it 80 million hours it's all offensive what Everybody makes more Tom. There's a seven guys make more money Tom Brady. So that's not like even the thing But Brady makes his money elsewhere and doesn't really give a shit rather win at football He's winning at life. He's winning. He's basically winning. He's winning at everything. Um, he's got he's got his, you know He's got just out of copy 12. I've got ice cream. He's winning life So where is it? I think that's good for us as a jet. I mean, it makes the price of a quarterback high. It's just going to be that way. Yes. Every single time. Every guy that comes out is just going to be the most. When we sign, if we sign Kirk Cousins and it's an insane deal, just relax because in four months, the next deal is going to make that deal look like a bargain. Wait till Aaron Rodgers gets on the phone with Green Bay and he's like, this is bullshit. Right. Okay, we'll negotiate. I think there's three coming up this year that are gonna be insane. They're gonna make another record. Oh yeah. So they obviously, they believe in it. But here's the thing, now that team, that's their guy and they're gonna put all the, that's why I want us not to do it around. They're gonna be good by the way. Fine, them and the Rams are gonna be really good. And you know what they're saying about this, this type of thing and this type of, you know, a guy or like being concise and being forward with your movements in the draft of free agency, it says to the rest of the league, like we're here to do this. Like we're not gonna diddle around. Like why did no one wanna come to the Jets last year? Why was everybody laughing? Because we basically were like, it was clear. We were saying to the world, we don't give a shit. We're just getting rid of everybody. And so- I still don't disagree with what they did last year. I think it only meant, that was the only good decision if you see this team now. Take off. I think that's what's supposed to happen. Right. But it's it's only good if it happened. Well, all of because you have a shot. Now. Yeah, totally. You've almost nobody on your roster. That's nobody of talent. That's what the roster was. Right. And now we have all the money. Money to bring in players and we have picks galore. Yep. That's what you're supposed to do When you when you do a gut and they did it over one year They just gutted it one year. I didn't take that long. That's fine. And now they have guys that they they do know more about whether they were first year or second year players. They know what where the gaps are on the team and they know what they need to go out and spend some money on. Yep. Like if Robbie Anderson's your number three you're actually in good shape and you know that now. You do, I mean he was almost a thousand yard receiver and if McCown plays the last four games He's definitely a thousand yard receiver. Maybe ten touchdowns. Yeah, that's a fucking good season. Yep
00 Jake: I mean on a bad team, but fine. I mean He's the focal point so we get covered Everybody gets my you getting fired if we don't answer the question that we've been trying to answer for the last a billion years And you just got to answer it and that's why that's why I feel if you make a move and go up, or if you pay the big money, I don't care how wide you gotta open the purse, just do it because I want there to be no decision. Because when it comes time, I don't want to be like, well, and this guy, the fourth best quarterback dropped to the Jets and maybe is going to be okay. I want it to be like the Jets knew what they wanted, they put on their big boy pants, and they stepped up and they grabbed the guy. I keep that. And that's their guy. And then we fucking start him. I keep. flip-flopping in my own head of what I want whether I want us to go draft or go cousins I was like very Very much in favor of I want cousins you've been saying that and wanting them for a long time, right? I'm kind of Rethinking that okay. What's why you going back on it now because I think about the fact that if you can have a hand-picked first round top tier blue chip caliber quarterback in there and you get to form them around your system and then you get to pay them That's the shitty part. Like the guys that we're going to pay now with all this money will likely not be around when the quarterback that we draft now will need to get paid. If you get what I'm saying. Yeah. So like you have this window of like five years. to have really good players around the developmental quarterback, which is what you need. Because when we had Mark Sanchez, which let's not forget that wasn't that long ago, it's less than 10 years, right? Like it really, we were in the AFC championship game less than 10 years ago, back to back. And what we did was we had a very, very talented roster. Around a young quarterback that we were bringing along slowly And then we made mistakes with you know, Trader Mike and did not Keep the roster intact Around him and tried to we kind of paid him too early We felt bad because we went after Peyton Manning. So we were like, alright, let's just pay him more money. And then we bring in T-Bo and we just sort of fucked him up. Oh yeah, we did so many terrible... I'm just looking at, like, I posted this in our own private thing that we talk about. You know, he's hitting the... he wins. His average salary is $6 million. His signing bonus was $17 million. His contract year, four years, $26 million. Guaranteed at risk, signing $26 million. Total, $26.
00 Jake: Last year. It's really about the cap hit. Yeah, okay, the cap hit for next year is $7 million. That's how you win. Right. Well, that's how they put when you basically have like one of the top five quarterbacks in the league and you're paying him Right. Now you have to hit the guy you do you have to hit the guy to hit once You have to hit like there are some years where it's all misses like I brought up Winston and Mariota They're not Even top 15 quarterbacks those are complete flubs. Oh, I don't think they're flubs yet I've seen Mario play and thought it is not good. Oh really? Yeah, really he threw more interceptions than touchdowns last year Yeah, I threw 11 touchdowns last year. Let's think about that for a second. It's not good That's terrible. I got you about that's that's not good at all If you want to say that like Winston's not good, I maybe go there. Mario, I feel like you got a little bit more. Not a quarterback. All right. Who else? You know what? He's a system guy. He needs to play. He'd be good on the Eagles. Right. He'd be great. He needs that RPO. He needs that run pass option where he can use his athleticism way more athletic than Nick Foles is to have a run. Pass or his own run a triple option there for him to almost on every play run and then it just isn't Isn't there so I just don't think he's that good I think Winston's more of a like he's a real pocket passer But he's got like a little too much Brett fire venom where he's like, I'll just throw it up Right. I'll make it every time. Just wing it in there So there are four in this draft. I think that's the consensus. There are four top quarterback picks and they kind of be flipping around like I've seen them kind of old Mayfield Rosen and fourth. Uh, Oh crap. There's one more. I want to say it's not Smith. Obviously. No, there's one more. There's four. But I think after we get to the combine, after we get through, you know, I just want us to go and grab Whoever it is. I just just please don't let it fall to us I don't want the fates of other teams and be sitting around watching three of the quarterbacks like Become Super Bowl winning quarterbacks and we're like, oh and we waited for the fourth one. Just go get it Anyway, but yeah, there's a great argument. That's why I don't carry the way, because I think I can make an argument either way. One, you get Kirk Cousins, there's no ramp up period. That guy's going to come in, he's going to throw for 4,000 yards next year. He's just gonna, right? And then you put all those picks into other things around him, line, running backs, you know, wide receivers, and then you spend some of the extra money into other things, and I think we're good. But...
12 Jake: putting talent around him or we're not gonna sign cousins and then we have then it's all about getting up and grabbing the right quarterback and You just have to grab the right one and then put tons and tons and tons of talent around him to make him as good as he possibly could be. And really by talent we mean offensive line in a running back. Yeah, I mean that's it offensive line running back. Yeah, I can actually live with our receiving core with if Quincy Anunwa is healthy and Robbie Anderson isn't in jail. Like, I can live with Quincy Anunwa, Robbie Anderson, the two rookies from last year and curse. I can live with that. Yeah, that could be okay. It's fine. It's fine for the rookie quarterback. It's actually fine. It's not great. And then tight end you're gonna stick with ASJ. Or the guy we drafted last year that was injured the whole season who God damn knows. I don't know. Like it. Like it. Like it. Yeah. I mean, I'd prefer to move on from ASJ because I don't think he's really strong enough. Personally, I watched Travis Kelsey play and he's got hands for days. Like he'll just catch anything around him. Right. And he runs through around over wherever. He just gains five more yards after he catches the ball. Right. Our guy goes down like if arm tackles. I will say just do you trip him. He's down. He's like, fuck you. Kelsey jumps over you. Same thing with Gronk. Gronk just runs. Guys bounce off him. I know I'm talking about like the two best. Yeah, you are. But at the same time, like, well, there's like Evan Ingram on the Giants. Like that guy doesn't like go down so easy. yards You should be able to like run two guys for two yards. He just down it noises. Yeah, I mean, all right What about Jeremy Bay's are? Share I mean, they know I mean, I don't really know a whole lot about him I do feel like Morton got a raw deal, but Maybe there was just. Just something. Something that was happening behind the scenes that we have no visibility into. Well, they're clearly so, so there's, you know, there is a connection with him and cousins. So I think that's what is that connection. I don't know. I'd have to go look it up. There was some, there's some connection about him that cousin was talking about him and saying, Oh, I used to, let's see, Jeremy Bates, cousin, cousin's connections. I don't know. There is a connection. I don't know what it was, but they've been together in some. Has a big fan. To see Jeremy's. Jamorin, C-Hawks coordinator, blah blah blah. And Cous. It's a fan who worked under Mike Shanahan alongside Dennis and Denver again.
02 Jake: Cue the color rumors. Drafted and Shanahan drafted cousins. Okay, so he worked with cut so he worked under Shanahan and Shanahan drafted cousins in Washington Yeah, okay. That's that's a connection that works. He's a Shanahan Disciple are we talking Mike? I assume Yes We should have an interesting offense We should have a better run game, first of all. It'll change the blocking scheme for sure. It'll be a zone, like stretch zone type of one cut. Powell works in that. McGuire I actually think works in that. And they should look to... I always think you should draft a running back every year. Justin: Yeah. Jake: Yeah, for sure. There's a dude in it. Oh, there's like one guy this year. Dude out of Oklahoma. That's like a monster. But I don't think he's going to get down to us. No, there's like two Oklahoma? Running back or sorry, Georgia, two Georgia running backs. How did the Browns not come out of this with like the number one wide receiver, the number one running back and the number one quarterback out of this? Can you imagine getting that? They probably won't come out of it with both. even though I traded up to the number one and just had our pick, I would love it. I'd love it. I want to have a decision and I want to stop because I feel like some of this, it's the way McHagnon is. He's a little, I don't know, and it's worked. Leonard, I think Leonard Williams has worked. I think we saw the one that's worked, but he's a little bit late for the draft to come to him. I Having a really good offense. No you when I looked at when's not last year but the year before in that first five game I was like, he's good. Yeah, once is good. And then next year he was better again under
00 Jake: offensive head coaches both of them. Yep straight up. Yep offense. Well, that's why this like both of them have the opposite of what we have. One with the Rams and golf sucked last year. Yeah, his rookie year. So fuck that year, right? Barely played. But yeah. Well, no, he played played like 10 games. 10? I Which by the way was a fun little like Tina Minfolds both sucked on the Rams right got them goth and it It ends up one of them wins a Super Bowl So that's how many other one the other one was in the shows how much that coach really matters, too Right like it's not just the quarterback like the coach actually really matters. That's why this is a place That's why this Bates guy, but it's not just it's the head, coach It's a mentality because if you want to be good on offense You've got to have an offensive minded head coach who's got five ball, five testicles that he's walking into the Super Bowl with. And he's like, I'm going to jizz all over the place because I got five balls worth of jizz. And this always comes back to jizz on this. So anyways, the but the point is you've got Peterson, who's totally offensive minded. with Jim Schwartz, former head coach, handling the defense. And he's a defensive whiz, and he's had number one defenses that he's coached before. And then you've got McVey, who's again, a young offensive prodigy who comes up under Shanahan and other Shanahan. And then under Gruden, he's got a good offensive mind, and he's got Wade Phillips. former head coach, tons of experience and has also coached number one off defenses in the past and has won Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator because of his defense. You need that. We don't have that. Because I think that is actually the recipe, not the opposite. But we think you need the offensive head coach With a young upstart offensive head coach young just needs to be really good at like thinking through Offensive scenarios where you're gonna be a little bit more ballsy and not be like that my defense will stop them No, fuck that I'm no fuck that and then leave everything else to the head coach ex-head coach really good defense a defensive coach be like nah my defense is gonna stop them no they're not fuck you we're gonna score and if we don't then our defense will stop them fine but we're gonna go for it we're not gonna try and pin them at the 10 fuck you we're gonna go up and we're gonna go up big here we're gonna go for it on fourth down because i gotta play that i've been working on oh and i got it i got Filly Filly in my back pocket. You know what I mean? Like again, the kurt cousins to me
02 Jake: If we get him, that's a better, it's probably a better scenario for this team because I don't believe that Bowles will do a good job with a young quarterback. I don't think he's done a good job with a young quarterback. He says I don't think he will either. And I do believe that. But we'll learn very quickly and hopefully the lead offensive coordinator with any. With any skill could do something with this putty that is this defense There is talent Young talent. Yep on this defense It's ready to be good. I mean the only thing holding this defense back at this point Are corners and you can't even tell me it's like pass rush because I've rewatched Jets games We get to the quarterback, we just don't sack them. Because guys are open to throw the ball to. So like, they work in tandem. Yeah, I know. And it just, we do get the pressure, it just comes up the middle, as opposed to from the edge. That's fine. As long as we're pressuring and putting pressure, making the quarterback feel a little more uncomfortable, if you have guys who can cover for like half a second longer, that really is all it is. It's half a second. It's not even like, you know, two seconds. It's half a second that can stay with their guy. It makes all the difference in the world and I think we have the playmakers. I think they're there I think may and Adams are gonna make some plays just need guys to cover on their own on an island It was why we were so good. We had Rivas and Cromartie is like, right? Try it We're you have fun where your second was still a starter for anybody else. Yeah. All right. Well, let's get out of here That's it. We'll be back. So when's our Francis March? Yeah, we got to do something around free agency and we got to do something around the draft, right? Something around track pre draft post draft pre and post draft. We'll do both We'll do something more like like, you know, maybe the Like it's also when the week of free agents also when the state is schedule goes. Oh, well, we'll do the week of frames I think we should do a pre pre and post free agency. I need to have a good list of free agents. You gotta you gotta go three days after because it goes insane for those three days. It really does. So like, and then you get the pre stuff, but if you do like, we do the week before, then we have the, that happen and we'll do after and then we'll do a, then once free agency stops, I think it takes like two weeks, right? It's not, it's not like three days. It goes on for a while. Then it'll stop. It goes on for. Well forever right until the season starts. All right. Well, we'll we back with that until then as always Justin Jake saying let's go chance
